In this third installment in the popular Fish! series, the authors examine change as a necessary, ongoing process that should never stop--at least not if one wants to keep the workplace vital and fully alive. Using a fictitious sushi restaurant as an example, this fable examines the three principles that Lundin, Christensen, and Paul believe are necessary for continuing success: Find It ("it" being each employee's personal vision of the business), Live It, and Coach It. Readers of the authors' previous books--Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results and Fish! Tales--should find its familiarity comforting. For those new to the series, this standalone volume is easy to read and highly valuable. --David Bombeck

The "o-FISH!-al" follow-up to the phenomenal bestselling Fish! and Fish! Tales, Fish! Sticks is a stand alone business parable that shows you how to come up with a vision for your business and how to keep it alive, vital, and renewed through tough times, such as turnover in management and staff or a troubled economy.

Using the example of a hugely successful, fictional sushi restaurant as a model for a vision of continual renewal, Fish! Sticks employs the same kind of easy-to-read story that was used in Fish! to illustrate its three major principals of continued success: Commit, Be it, and Coach it.

When Stephanie, a new manager, takes over from a wildly popular and now promoted boss, she is faced with the problem of how to keep spirits up in a corporate unit that has, frankly, started to get bored and cranky and revert to its old ways. But then she visits the amazing Taka Sushi (formerly Taka Teriyaki), with its lines of customers cheerfully waiting for hours to get in. Soon, she realizes that the way to keep her employees motivated and her customers delighted can be learned from a bunch of waiters who teach one another everything they need to know. And when she finds out just how the owner of Taka knew to switch her main bill of fare from teriyaki to sushi long before anyone else, what she really discovers is the secret of keeping your work fresh.

4 out of 5 stars IT means: Find Purpose, Live Identity, Coach Accountability.......2007-08-19

An easy read and good use of the fable to emphasis an often overlooked part of performance management; the importance of each individual finding a piece of their Me Inc. vision within the Business Inc. vision. Although authors Lundin, Christensen, and Paul never use the term Me Inc. in this fable about sustaining a performance transformation within the 6th-floor neurological care ward of Good Samaritan Hospital (Business Inc. in the fable), referring to the connection as IT; they clearly convey the message that sustainable performance is only possible when individuals find their IT within the wards vision of customer care.

Recognizing that sustainable motivation/energy can only be created when individuals connect their purpose, identity, and accountability with their business's performance vision, the authors show how the employee's must Find IT thru individual conversations, Live IT by putting their unique identity into action, and hold each other accountable thru a Coach IT process unencumbered by hierarchy. While fables can only go so far in conveying the complexity of organizational effectiveness, this fable brings a critical piece of the puzzle to the front. It is recommended for use with teams as the next step after the initial visioning and performance goal setting processes of performance management. 3 out of 5 stars Decent but not as good as the original.......2007-08-01

After reading about this book I was excited by the opportunity to get some more insight into the "Fish!" world, and I was especially interested in learning about `how to make change stick'. I liked how the book was another "fable" type story, and thought that this might make another good Book Club selection for our company book club.

Well, I read the book, and although I thought it had some merit, it was not nearly as easily accessible and distillable to the same audiences as the first "Fish!" book was. I was still glad I bought the book, and I did get something out of it, but I had real trouble imagining trying to pass this message on to others in our company.

I will say this, though. One message that came out of this book and that hit me loud and clear was that for "change" to stick, the meaning of the change has to be personalized to each individual, and it has to mean something to them, because once all the bells and whistles of the program are gone, and the initial excitement dies down, it will be impossible to keep a culture change program going unless others can relate to it personally and continue to buy into it on a day to day basis.

So, I thought THAT message was valuable and worth buying the book for, but I don't think I will be passing this out at our next book club. It was just not a book that was otherwise easily understandable to a much wider audience.

However, if you haven't read the original "Fish!" book yet, I HIGHLY recommend it...

Book Description

Treating animals just as any healer would treat human beings, Allen Schoen has become one of America’s most celebrated veterinarians. Kindred Spirits shares the transformative power of his remarkable methods, explores how alternative healing is revolutionizing his profession, and, in the tradition of James Herriot, shares heartwarming stories of animals and their caretakers who have deeply enriched each other’s lives. Through moving scenes–such as an ailing German shepherd who fights to stay alive so he can assist and comfort his ailing human companion–Schoen details the ways in which the human-animal bond can provide a wellspring of love and support, and outlines his own special prescription for improving the care we give our animals through adopting simple healing practices at home. A remarkable new synthesis of science and spirit, Kindred Spirits at last reveals the many ways our animal friends can help us lead happier, healthier, more fulfilling lives.

4 out of 5 stars The World Needs More Dr. Schoens.......2006-06-13

This book is a great primer for people who have an inkling that our relationship with animals runs deep and is often spiritual or even mystical.

Dr. Schoen has given us a one-stop shopping source, with introductions to: alternative medicine for animals, alternatives to commercial pet food, and ways to enrich the human-animal bond through touch, massage, and meditation.

Buy it as a gift for someone whose eyes are opening to the reality that we are all connected and responsible for each other.

4 out of 5 stars For Animal Lovers.......2005-08-04

Allen M. Schoen, D.V.M., M.S., author of "Kindred Spirits" has written a sensitive book that pulled me in from the beginning. I have to confess that I am a person who feels more in touch with animals than than I do with most people. I have enjoyed reading this book so far and would recommend it to any adult who enjoys understanding the complex relationship between man and the animals around us. It is easy to read and full of wonderful anecdotes from the author's experience as a vet.

2 out of 5 stars Dubious information, egotistical tone.......2004-07-08

Dr. Schoen never met a form of "alternative" therapy that he didn't like. I'm all in favor of keeping an open mind and exploring non-traditional forms of healing. On the other hand, I think that your mind shouldn't be so open that your brain falls out. Extraordinary claims should require extraordinary evidence.

Just once, I'd like to hear Dr. Schoen say, "This form of therapy is complete clap-trap. I don't think it works, and it might even be harmful". Instead, Dr. Schoen embraces everything from acupuncture, to Chinese herbs, and all things in between.

And on top of that, the author's tone is one of self-aggrandizement and condescension toward his "less-enlightened" colleagues.

I'm a life-long animal lover and pet owner. I volunteer at the local animal shelter. I really disliked this book.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2003-04-03

This is a wonderful publication on a meaningful subject. I didn't read the book but ordered the abridged cassette tapes. All animal lovers should know about this book or tape and read or listen. Truly one that you'll be glad you bought.

Book Description

Risky in conception, hip and yet soulful, this is a prose poem of a novel -- intense, lyrical, and highly evocative -- with a mystery at its center, which keeps the reader in suspense until the final page. In a tour de force that could be described as Altmanesque, we are invited into the private lives of the residents of a quiet urban street in England over the course of a single day. In delicate, intricately observed closeup, we witness the hopes, fears, and unspoken despairs of a diverse community: the man with painfully scarred hands who tried in vain to save his wife from a burning house and who must now care for his young daughter alone; a group of young clubgoers just home from an all-night rave, sweetly high and mulling over vague dreams; the nervous young man at number 18 who collects weird urban junk and is haunted by the specter of unrequited love. The tranquillity of the street is shattered at day's end when a terrible accident occurs. This tragedy and an utterly surprising twist provide the momentum for the book. But it is the author's exquisite rendering of the ordinary, the everyday, that gives this novel its freshness, its sense of beauty, wonder, and hope. Rarely does a writer appear with so much music and poetry -- so much vision -- that he can make the world seem new.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Debut.......2007-05-21

It moves slowly, it's melancholic yet beautiful. Life and absurdity of circumstances mapped out for us, and the vibration starts from a point in your heart and extend to your whole body, filling you with awe and sadness.

5 out of 5 stars A dream, a tone poem, a love letter, a prayer........2007-04-26

This is one of the most remarkale books I have ever read. I've never encountered this writing style anywhere else - if anyone knows of another author who writes in a similar vein, please share.
I couldn't read this book initially. I was confused about what I was rading. After a second or third attempt, it clicked in to place, and I was off. I couldn't wait to get home from work to read more, and I digested it in a few days, despite only ahveing a few hours of down time each week.

I don't think McGregor even needs a story. There were story elements in this book, and the story was fine. But I think I would be happy just to read his descriptions of events and characters in the street, without end.

My only disappointment was that, at the time of reading, he had written no other books.

I'm currently reading his book 'So Many Ways To Begin', and that too is haunting and dream-like.

I highly recommend Jon McGregor's writing.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable.......2006-08-29

right from the begining, the text is more poem then prose.

this is a really well written book, and it draws you right in from the begining - a description of the "song of the city" that you can hear if you just listen to the little sounds going on. very entrancing.

in general, there is great attention to detail, which makes one feel as if they are part of the book, the plot, as if on IS the character described.

an extraordinary look at how an ordinary day can cary so many remarkable moments. very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things.......2006-08-06

Written in a very unique style, poetry even, the story revolves around the lives of people living in the same community, alternating between characters and personalities, thoughts and emotions. Although, many of the characters remain nameless and only receive descriptions as their identifying qualities, it only adds to the immense feel and power of the writing. It is so interesting getting to know each individual character, especially the one who collects things, takes pictures.

At times, it is hard to know when events are occuring, and this can become confusing; but it doesn't take anything away. And even though the entire premise is about everyday happenings and feelings, the writing never becomes tired or boring, even up to the end.
There isn't much I can say about the book; I don't have the right words. Just read it.

Extremely beautiful and insightful tale of life. Wonderful writing.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful work.......2006-07-13

The book is less a novel, (not that it matters, but don't expect one if looking for that sort of read.) It's more a lengthy poem or a novella -- I see it more as a musical tone poem. Declarative sentences of beautiful, sensitive construction build and awaken our eyes to an awakening day in London. The first few pages are stunningly strong and while all the book doesn't maintain this pitch, indeed no living person could, we don't particularily worry because at ever turn of a page is a new discovery.

Reading it in one shot is to be overwhelmed in the way watching the entire ring cycle or mahabarrata (sp?) would overwhelm. I enjoyed it over a series of nights, taking my time, and the language seeped into my dreams. It's a dreamlike work, and one any contemporary writer should check out both for it's strength and structure.

Book Description

Throughout her celebrated career as an actress, from her film debut as a Bond Girl to her starring role in the beloved television series Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and during the winding course of her life, Jane Seymour has been a testament to the rewards of embracing life's challenges eagerly and gracefully. Speaking from fifty-two years of experience with both joy and heartache, she firmly believes that "when we allow ourselves to see all changes as remarkable, some extraordinary things can happen to us."

Rich in lived wisdom, Remarkable Changes revolves around seven signposts of change -- stops we all visit, and perhaps revisit, on the turbulent voyage of life. Jane reflects on the life-altering events of her past and on their universal lessons. While candidly recounting her own defining moments of turmoil -- rejection, betrayal, divorce, near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences among them -- she introduces extraordinary men and women who have courageously navigated the most formidable changes, from the loss of a child to sudden blindness, as well as those who have made incredible changes happen against the odds.

Drawing on her own life and the shining examples of others -- including her indomitable mother, a native of Holland who was held in a Japanese prisoner of war camp during World War II; her husband, James Keach, who restored her faith in love and trust in men after a painful divorce; and her "soul mate," Christopher Reeve, who won her heart in the cult classic Somewhere in Time -- she offers a wealth of guidance for successfully managing any journey of transition.

Heartfelt and uplifting, Remarkable Changes is a welcome companion that will help us find the true value in our life's passages.

2 out of 5 stars Failed Marriages and a Life of Privilege to teach others.......2005-07-30

I was sorely disappointed. The title and book jacket verbage make this sound like an outstanding read but I found it a tale of failed marriages and I felt sorry for Seymour and her choices but I hardly find it a model to teach from. Somehow I missed the lessons of the reviewers but then she is from the Hollywood crowd and they sing each others praises. A nice lady I'm sure but I found it more about her than about the lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Touching account of a remarkable woman.......2004-02-27

I never thought much of Jane Seymour, other than to think
she was a pretty actress . . . her book, REMARKABLE
CHANGES, certainly gave me a different
perspective.

It is a touching account of how she has embraced change, as
well as such life-altering events as rejection, betrayal, divorce,
near bankruptcy, and near-death experiences . . . I liked how
she was quite candid about her life . . . in addition, she
movingly told many other stories about others who have had
to deal with such tragedies as the loss of a child and sudden
blindness.

I especially liked a section toward the end, in which she described
a tradition her parents taught her:

As little girls we were always encouraged to count our blessings.
Of course what that implies is that no matter what happens, there
are always blessings among the day's events to be counted.
In my mind, that's what we do when we look for the gifts that change can
bring. The last thing I do every night-and have done all my life-is think
over what's happened that day, and what I think is going to happen, and
then to think of how grateful I am for the things that have happened. I've
taught my own children to do the same, and it's a lovely little ritual I often
complete with my twins. And I love feeling that I can pass to my children
the wonderful, enriching traditions my parents taught to me. Nice end to
the day, actually.

There were several other memorable passages; among them:
All these difficulties have taught me something. As a result of
feeling left out and separate, and later of losing my passionate
dream of dancing, I began to see that although we don't always
have a choice in what happens to us, we really do have a choice
in how we react to what's happened. My reaction to being
excluded was that I retreated into working hard at what I did.
At the Arts Educational School, my parents couldn't afford the
education I was getting. I was on a partial grant, and I was so
incredibly grateful to be allowed to study what I loved rather than
cope with regular school that I did not want to waste one second of
my life and wanted to prove it to be the right choice. It's a feeling
that's carried over to my life today. How grateful I am to live in
the moment.

When I was fighting my weight, years ago when I was in my twenties, I
used another trick. I realized that the more I thought about the situation,
the worse I got. The more I felt I had put myself on a diet, the more I
obsessed about food, or rather, about not having food. However, I found
that if I put knitting needles in my hands, or if I was embroidering, or
even now, if I'm painting, my hands are busy, and it doesn't occur to me
to put something in my mouth. When my mind is focused on being creative,
the time flies by, and suddenly I think, "Oh my goodness, I haven't eaten
anything for three hours."

When she [her mother] returned home and the diagnosis was made,
she went right to work on a will. Contrary to what most of us would
think, Corinna said, "It was a wonderful, extraordinary exercise. Like
being Santa Claus!" I can believe that because I've watched my
mother do the same thing, with great joy. At eighty-eight years
of age, she lives every day to the fullest, taking advantage
of every opportunity and invitation that comes her way, but at the
same time she's aware that she won't be here forever. Consequently
she's been quite literally gathering up the gifts she has in her life
and then slowly handing out treasures she's collected and things
she knows we'll value. She's been doing this for the last few years-we've
received things like my first ballet shoes or a dance outfit I wore as a girl,
an exercise book from school, an award my father received. My mother
is such a giving person, she derives great pleasure in sharing these gifts,
while she's well, alive, and vibrant enough to take part in the excitement
with us.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Revelation.......2003-04-30

Live in the moment. You can't take anything with you when you go except the imprint you leave behind in the lives of others. If you are struggling with something in your life, go out and help someone else.

All of these are pieces of advice for turning life's challenges into opportunities, the subtitle of REMARKABLE CHANGES.

For years, Jane Seymour has always been viewed as having the "perfect life." She's had 30+ successful years in the film industry, is happily married, has 4 children and 2 stepchildren, and seems to spin gold with everything she touches, including a clothing line, a worldwide art career, a new housewares collection, a children's clothing line and several published books.

However, appearances can be deceiving. So it is with Seymour. As she shares in this memoir, the life behind the smiling woman you've seen on TV is far from perfect. Although some might classify this book as self-help, it is more appropriately categorized in the autobiography section. Seymour uniquely combines personal stories with advice for an entertaining result full of heartwarming honesty and down-to-earth anecdotes.

Complete with 20 stories from friends and family who have triumphed over their adversities, REMARKABLE CHANGES offers fresh insight into the realities of life, told in a way that makes you feel more like you're sitting down to tea with Jane than delving into a personal counseling session.

Mirroring the quilting circles of days gone by, Seymour stresses the importance of sharing your struggles with others to help you get past whatever is holding you down. No stranger to setbacks, she details the pain of her divorces, her frightening near-death experiences and the ups and downs of her acting career. Through it all, Seymour writes about attitude being what makes or breaks you as you deal with the changes in your life. You are the one who decides how you'll react to whatever life throws your way and whether you'll have stepping stones or stumbling blocks.

So, be prepared for a journey of discovery and enlightenment, coupled with the 'fireside chat' voice of Jane Seymour as you learn about your own REMARKABLE CHANGES.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Sad Endings.......2003-12-28

Mr. Paulk's book is remarkable in light of his return to a gay bar in Washington, DC., where someone took his photograph in the men's room. Perhaps his salvation simply did not "take."

3 out of 5 stars Good Bio..........2003-02-06

John really pours it all out here. Lots of pre-born-again detail. Great, 'Getting saved' climax. There's no pushing, 'The Faith' here, just a honest bio..

1 out of 5 stars Dangerous self-deception. Cheapens the reality of Christ........2003-02-01

I picked this book up off the street. Literally, off the street. I've always thought it was a crime to throw away books, no matter how old, so I saved this one. The cover was ripped off, but the intro was still there. I couldn't believe I was reading a book about a gay man turned straight through belief in Christ. This was one of the worst things I've ever heard of.

This is an easy read, as it's one of those celebrity autobiographies written with the 'help' of a real author. It's pretty sad that Paulk attributed his unhappiness in life to his sexuality, and never analyzed his orientation through his own wants and needs, and not through the perspective of someone else. Unfortunately, God and Jesus don't want you to be soemthing you're not. And while you can convert to Christianity, there is no way to convert the sexuality with which you were born. It can be a struggle to define and come to terms with your true nature, and the strength you gain from religion can help you in this quest, but accepting the love of God will not reverse your sexual polarity if you're gay. God's love can give you the strength to discover your true self, but it will not make you straight if you're gay. You can cover it up, you can pretend, and you can deny it, but the truth is a person's true sexual tastes are designed from birth, whether they lay in brain or spirit makes little difference.

In John's own words: "Growing up, I heard it all...sissy, queer, fag. Naturally, I believed I was born gay." Perhaps he was. Most people have an idea of their orientation before they have a practical knowledge of sexual attraction. Perhaps if we lived in a culture in which people were accepted regardless of their tastes, John would never have been tormented like that.

John was a gay drag queen and sometimes prostitute. In his book, he says that the queer identity drove him into depression and drug abuse, and that he was not relieved of these symptoms until he became straight. So, John was a depressed queer who was really straight. It can take years to understand your own sexual identity, and if John is happy as a straight man, then I'm all for him. But what he repeats in his book is that gay men and women who are unhappy can and should be converted to heterosexuality through Christianity.

Well, I'm glad John found his true calling in life, but the fact is most homos are stable people who are happy with their sexuality and wish people would just accept the way they are. Just like straights, queers have a wide variety of personalities. Not every gay guy is a drag queen prostitute, in fact most of them are straight-wristed and deep of voice, and they're attracted to other men. Before we start looking for the 'cure' for this, perhaps we should ask why it's wrong?

It's great John found what makes him happy sexually, but this book basically says the answer to a gay person's lifestyle is for them to accept Jesus and turn straight through his love. This does so much disservice to Christ, and gay people, that I almost couldn't finish this book. For one, it turns gay people who have no interest in 'turning' off from Christ's love. They end up seeing Jesus used as an anti-gay device, when in fact Jesus loves everyone regardless of their orientation, and isn't worried in the slightest about those who are attracted to the same sex.

Also, this book's message is downright harmful to gays who are indesicive or depressed about their lifestyle, in that it attempts to convince them that they can change if they believe. Devotion to Christ will not change your identity. You can only reveal your own identity through hard work and deliberation. There have likely been more gay suicides because of the fact that they couldn't change than there were gay conversions through Christ. Convincing someone that their sexuality is a personal sin and that they can change if they only truly believe is dangerous. Because of this, I can't support the views in this book. If anything, John Paulk should support people to try understand their sexuality, whether straight or gay, and come to terms with it in healthy ways.

4 out of 5 stars Not Afraid to Change : The Remarkable Story of How One Man.......2002-05-09

This is a book that truly reveals how one man struggled for years to overcome a lifestyle that overpowered his life. John Paulk literally put himself on the line to share with people his overwhelming life change. It is a book for Christians and non-Christians alike, as it is not too preachy and doesn't reference scripture non-stop as many other books of this type tend to do. I applaud Mr. Paulk for his willingness to explore such a controversial subject, take the criticism, and tell his life story for those who need to know that they can change. As for Mr. Paulk's "Washington, D.C." incident: don't judge. No one really knows his motives - it may have been curiosity; a peak at his past lifestyle.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't even follow his own "book".......2001-10-22

I suppose what's most interesting to me about this book, apart from Mr. Paulk's own hypocrisy as revealed when he was removed from the leadership position of Exodus, is the fact that he seems to ignore his own holy book's words about sinning in the heart being the same as sinning in the body. If he truly believed that God found the concept of homosexuality wrong, then not exercising it -- yet still entertaining the notion -- is wrong as well. By his own standards, he'd have been better off getting brainwashed ala A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. In any event, this book is, more than anything, a very sad read.
