Don't Read This While Hungry ..........2007-10-18
I don't watch cooking shows on TV nor do I read gourmet cooking magazines or anything like that ~~ the names of the chefs in here don't mean anything to me. It's not personal. I just don't have the time nor the interest to read about them nor do I travel to eat at fine restaurants ... But this book is hilarious. It is one of the few books where I am lost in the giggles over the mishaps in the kitchens. And I love it.
I do cook and am a fairly good cook ~~ though not as good as these professionals are. I have messed up dishes often and have my embarrassing moments ~~ but not on the grand scale as these chefs. And I love the stories ~~ the wedding cake mishaps are my favorite ~~ especially Michel Richard's "Alibi" ~~ that one literally brought tears to my eyes. I can just see it all. Another favorite is "Our Big Brake" by Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. One that brought sighs to my heart is Paul Kahan's "(Not) Ready for My Close-up." Another one is Tamara Murphy's "For The Birds" ~~ I just lost myself in the giggles over a plate of grilled cheese sandwiches (Ah. A dream to come true would be having a chef cooking for me!).
To be honest, I don't think there's a story in there that I didn't like. They all are funny and very human ~~ it brings a touch of humanness to the world's greatest cooks. And since I like to cook, I can definitely relate to their stories. And I love all of their stories. I cannot remember the last time I had so much fun reading a book!!
However, don't read this while you're hungry ~~ some of their descriptions of food will make you hungry and if you're like me, that doesn't have a modern up to date kitchen or pantry ~~ you'll find yourself raiding something wishing that you can finally taste what they are famous for making. A Ding Dong just won't do it. But maybe it will spur you to become a better chef in your own kitchen ~~ knowing that the greats are just as human as we all are.

Really, Don't Do It.......2007-06-27
This book was so funny for we culinary types. I really enjoyed reading it, and learning new and funny things about some of my favorite chefs.
What not to do in the kitchen.......2007-02-13
This is one of the funniest books, I have read. I have lent it to many friends and we have had a good laugh at many of the stories. It's nice to see that professional chefs can also have disasters in the kitchen.
Fun read!.......2006-12-14
This book will make you chuckle!
This book is broken down into short chapters, --- each chapter written by a famous Chef and his/her experiences in kitchen mishaps.
Fun read!
This just makes the rest of us feel better..........2006-10-12
This is a must have for home cooks, would-be chefs, and people who just love the kitchen. In this humorous collection of stories, many chefs that have no reached the pinnacle of their careers share tales and snippets of life that include moments they were less than perfect. How many of us have ruined a dish by putting too much salt in the pot, or burned a turkey (or served one raw)? Turns out those sins are mild compared to some of the things these gods of food have done.
So many of the stories are just funny, you'll find yourself laughing out loud.
Sometimes when you watch cooking shows, or eat at a 5 star restaurant, it's easy to be intimidated by Chefs that seem to have perfected this craft. But this book will remind you that they have their off days as well, and that the gods of cuisine are just as human as the rest of us.
Highly recommended for everyone. Even if you don't cook, or aren't a foodie, this book is just funny.
Book Description
It's a tough job separating truth from urban legend, but the MythBusters are here to serve. For example, is it true that if you step in quicksand , you'll be sucked down to your death? Only two men would be inventive - and adventurous - enough to try to find out: Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, the MythBusters. Each week, hosts Savage and Hyneman, both special effects experts, use modern science to put another three urban legends to the test on their popular TV show. In this book, you'll learn how they either "busted" or confirmed fifteen myths on their show, often with spectacular results. Here are just some of the urban legends in this book:
-
Did a Ming Dynasty astronaut launch himself into space with a rocket?
-
Can a swallowed octopus egg grow to full size inside a person's stomach?
-
Is the daddy longlegs the world's most venomous spider?
-
Will a sinking ship suck you down?
-
How many balloons are needed to lift a small child off the ground?
-
Does a duck's quack echo?
Mythbusters: Don't Try This at Home! gets to the bottom of these urban legends and more, and it lets you do your own mythbusting with fun experiments you can do safely at home.

Not so good.......2007-06-10
I had ordered this book for a 17 year old. However, when I received it, I realized it was geared more for an 8 year old - very elementary.
Kids love it .......2007-05-24
My kids really love the show and the books.
I have two boys aged 10 and 14.
Meant for youngsters.......2007-02-16
I gave this to my rocket-scientist brother but it was my 4th grade nephew who ran off with the book. I would say that it is really designed for middle-school students? The nephew liked it.
Makes a great gift when enclosed with two dozen bottles of Diet Coke and six rolls of Mentos!
Nice gift item.......2007-01-16
I bought this for my husband who enjoys the show and loves to read. He has enjoyed it a great deal. Even our 6 year old likes to read the different myth busters.
Kids Love It!.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book for my 4 boys this Christmas and they really love it! We watch MythBusters every week on Discovery Channel and this book is a great in reviewing what was shown on TV. We have the first book that was released and this book is an excellent addition. Very easy to read and lots of pictures. Its perfect for all ages!
Book Description
A step-by-step guide to performing the death-defying stunts you thought were only possible in the movies.
For the millions of armchair daredevils who made Worst Case Scenario a mega bestzseller, Hunter Fulghum offers an even more hair-raising handbook. The result of persistent probing, diligent research, and outrageous phone calls to institutions like Fort Knox and the Pentagon, Don't Try This at Home gives thrill seekers everywhere the insider information they crave to show them how to perform feats such as:
*Conduct a SWAT Team hostage
*Rappel off the Eiffel Tower
*Borrow the Mona Lisa
*Form an independent nation
*Break into Buckingham Palace
*Catch a great white shark
*Meet aliens at Area 51
Filled with step-by-step instructions, including lists of necessary tools, timing tips, and helpful illustrations, Don't Try This at Home provides the ultimate guide to doing the impossible.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting and goofy.......2007-02-22
Some are more realistic than others, but all are entertaining. I'll certainly allow this book when I start my own nation off the coast of Africa.
Need Something Amusing to Read?.......2006-03-22
I've found Don't Try This At Home to be lighthearted and fun. It's also impractical and seems to be based largely on complete fantasy. What is it about you ask? Think of it as a 264 page Do-It-Yourself guide for the armchair adventurer.
Megalomaniacs will want to skip right to "Form an Independent Nation". In just 8 short pages, Fulghum describes the steps you'd need to complete. Like most of the items in the book, Forming an Independent Nation does have a large number of prerequisites. For example you will need "hard currency", especially if you choose to acquire your nation through peaceful means. Well no worries, just check out Fulghum's section on stealing gold from Fort Knox.
Thrill seekers, there's plenty of material here for you too. Good starting points are "Fly Through the Eye of a Hurricane" or "Guide and Surface a Nuclear Sub through Ice". My personal favorite is "Drive a Tank through a Tornado". Fulghum says the tank is "available from the US Army, contact the Pentagon to arrange purchase or lease". Does anyone have a phone number?
This stuff might work!.......2005-10-18
So help me, a lot of this stuff might actually work... Of course most of their ideas would take more time, money and resources than i'll ever have, but they're fun to think about!
All you need to know about things you don't need to know.......2004-05-12
Imagine calling Fort Knox and asking the best way to break in and steal the gold. Don't have the guts for it? Don't worry, because Hunter Fulghum has done it for you. He has contacted everyone from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to his local alien experts to find out how you would do everything from Swim the English Channel to Borrow the Mona Lisa to Start an Independant Nation.
Aside from being funny and quite interesting, the book is very well written; I highly recommend it.
Good book.......2004-03-18
Great fun to read, though some of it is a bit obvious... By the way I am starting an independant nation, got this book because I figured I might as well. I was already planning on starting it before I got the book. Getting an island from Nicaragua to make it. Anyways good book. Get it.

Andy Warhol was so enamored with Polaroids that he made special arrangements with the company to purchase all the overstock film of a discontinued model of camera. A similar photographic fetish is the organizing principle of Don't Try This at Home. For kicks, rocker and author Dave Navarro installed a carnival-grade photo booth in his L.A. home. The book documents a year's worth of visitors to Navarro's pad who all stepped into the booth to get their mug shots snapped.
The resulting dispatch from Hell is as hard to draw one's eyes from as a twelve car pile-up. Intermingled with a parade of rock stars, models, prostitutes, drug dealers, pizza delivery guys, and housecleaners are a series of observations and interviews with Dave and his co-author Neil Strauss. Strauss, co-author of other tomes for Jenna Jameson, Marilyn Manson, and Motley Crue, operates less as an editor than as a ringmaster to this debauched thing rock stars call a lifestyle.
Don't Try This At Home is one rollicking contact high of a memoir. Just set it on the coffee table at your home and watch how quickly it snares its readers. --Ryan Boudinot
Book Description
Former guitarist for Jane's Addiction and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, superstar, sex symbol, and reality television favourite Dave Navarro shares a year in his life in the Hollywood hills, featuring stories and strips from his infamous photo booth.
When Dave Navarro decided to open the doors of his house in the Hollywood hills to the chaos of the valley below, the only rule was, 'You come in the house, you get in the photo booth.' The result is a diary, a sociology experiment, a documentary of Hollywood, and an exercise in exhibitionism. Caught on film are strippers, Kurt Loder, Marilyn Manson, pizza delivery boys, Rose McGowan, Keanu Reeves, record executives, Scott Ian, Billy Corgan, hookers, Flea, Billy Zane, drug dealers, Angelyne, Leonardo DiCaprio, the cleaning lady, Leif Garrett, Natalie Imbruglia, and everyone else who came into the house. Some are zany, some inebriated, naked, hamming it up, looking beautiful, or looking ugly – the photo booth tells no lies.
Accompanying the strips are hilarious stories, musings, tell–all anecdotes, and other glimpses into the lifestyle of one of the most decadent rockstars of our time.
This chronicle of a year in Navarro's life is also a gritty portrait of his descent into drug use and self–destructiveness, and his struggle to find meaning.
Designed by the mad genius who also produced Manson's, Mötley Crüe's, and Mankind's books, Don't Try This at Home is a visual masterpiece, a celebrity exposé, and a shocking, hilarious, and irresistible read.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Uninteresting and Boring.......2007-09-28
I was excited when I first read an excerpt from this book in Rolling Stone, only to have it come out a few years later (legal troubles prob). In the end, it is a bland and boring read about a self-absorbed loser whose life is really not interesting. There is no insight into anything, it is a stale narrative with nothing revealed.
great read.......2007-05-31
very interesting and you want to keep on reading hard to put down, many photos included.
Boring and poorly written.......2007-04-21
I truly wanted to like this book but found it completely self-indulgent and just boring. Navarro tries so hard to come of as an intellectual and really just comes off as a loser with too much time on his hands. I had to force myself to finish it - I'm glad I bought it from bookcloseouts.
in depth look into life of a rock star/drug addict.......2007-02-21
Over the course of a few years, Neil Strauss takes you through the high and low points of a rollercoaster ride called Dave Navarro. The reason for the 4 stars is because of the slow start but it does end with a bang including his meeting Carmen Electra and the subsequent early stages of their relationship. Overall very enjoyable read.
A Wild Ride.......2006-10-07
This book was very hard to put down for me. Why? Because I was fascinated by how far Dave Navarro put himself out there emotionally with this book. Parts of it did not paint him well at all. Crawling around in Dave's head for the three sittings it took me to finish wasn't always easy...but breathlessly now on the other side I respect him as a person, flaws and all. Just like the rest of us. To reveal so much of yourself to the crushing scrutiny of mass society when your persona is your bankable commodity shows incredible fortitude and being pretty darn secure in who he is as a person.
Good for you Dave. Thanks for the wild ride.

Close to Home.......2006-03-08
These 44 stories had me grinning, then chuckling, then laughing out loud so much that my wife and children wanted me to read it to them. We've spent the last several evenings reading these tales and have enjoyed them immensely. Callaway's style is not just funny, he has a point to every story. There were times I had to quit reading because I teared up, but more often I had to quit reading to laugh. This book has been such a blessing in our home. The book centers on the things that really matter and shows us that there's hope - something we as parents desperately need every single day.

Don’t Try This At Home! The Physics of Hollywood Movies is a fresh look at the basics of physics through the filmmaker’s lens. It will deconstruct, demystify, and debunk popular Hollywood films through the scientific explanations of the action genre’s most dynamic and unforgettable scenes.

In ""Speed,"" a city bus going over 50 mph jumps over a 50-foot chasm--successfully. An examination of force, acceleration, Newton's Laws, impulse, momentum, and projectile motion follows.
Customer Reviews:
Try this at home: Movies, Popcorn & Physics.......2007-10-01
Wow, what a great book! It's like Ebert & Roper meets Einstein & Newton. Adam Weiner provides the perfect blend of Hollywood and no-kidding physics, and the result is a thoroughly entertaining and informative experience. Weiner de-constructs famous action scenes from movies like XXX, Speed, Spiderman, and 2001: a Space Odyssey with great wit and insight. Who would have thought that a book on physics could be a page-turner?! Bravo Mr. Weiner--hopefully this book will be a Blockbuster like so many of the movies you cover in your book. I can't wait for the next James Bond movie to come out--I'm gonna watch it with a bag of popcorn AND a calculator!
Every high school math or science teacher should read this book!.......2007-09-08
If you enjoy brain teasers, crossword puzzles, or otherwise stimulating your mind, you'll really enjoy this book. Weiner has an engaging, humorous style that leads the reader through fascinating examples of how to apply scientific formulas and ideas to debunk some of Hollywood's most spectacular stunts. If you are a teacher, it would be an incredible way to bring your students real world applications for apparently tedious and difficult formulas. The author makes math and physics fun and liberating. A great read!
What a GREAT teaching tool!!!.......2007-09-06
As someone who has seen the classes where the idea for this fantastic book was created...trust me when I say if you like physics, study physics, like Hollywood action films, etc....YOU GOTTA READ THIS BOOK! The author is dedicated to the subject matter and truly interested in making physics fun and accessible for students, teachers, and everyone!

Slapstick humor and poignancy combined.......2004-12-02
I couldn't put this book down, mainly because I was laughing so hard. It's an absurd story, yet the characters are amazingly well-crafted and the broad humor nonetheless contains a moral that creeps up on you rather than smashing you in the face.
Charles is a television producer of a British version of "Candid Camera". At the start of the story, he is approached by a woman in a bar who is looking for her blind date. Being attracted to the woman, he lies and says that yes, he is her blind date, even though it turns out the blind date is a policy wonk working for Tony Blair. Even though this lie is uncovered pretty quickly without serious consequence, the real fact that Charles is not quite sure who he is--is he Charles or Charlie, is he over each of his last two girl friends or not, does he want to bed Kate, the blind date girl, or either of the two co-workers whom he doesn't want to separate--becomes the real story of the book. Two identity issues, one from an anonymous phone caller and the other from the fact that he can't escape the consequences of a prank his show pulled that ended in tragedy, follow him throughout the story, leading him on a merry chase first to France and the unwelcoming arms of an ex, and then to the west of England where he disappears into a new character but still cannot escape his own identity.
Everything is done with a high humor and sense of absurdity--Charles' own and our own sense looking down on him--and the most unrealistic situations, such as two old men following Charles and his gangster captor across Dartmoor at night, somehow seem perfectly natural in the context of the unreal life Charles has led.
It's a fun book, extremely well-written, and poignant.

"Don't Try this At Home" is a collection of bad ideas compiled by interviewing thousands of emergency room patients who had to learn things the hard way. Read on to discover your ounce of prevention and then some.
Customer Reviews:
Both helpful and humorous.......2005-05-13
This book should be a home essential for everyone. I'm giving one to my sister who is a new mom. I'm sure she will benefit from all the tips just as I have. From advice like "don't cook in bare feet" to "careful with Q-tips" the book has just the right amount of simple guidelines to avoid emergency room visits. I assure you that you'll be surprised and enlightened with Dr. Pregerson's pearls of wit and wisdom.
Entertaining and practical.......2005-03-01
The amusement of tales of other people's poor judgement without any of the personal pain...if you follow this book's advice. Entertaining stories from the front lines of the E.R. What better gift to loved ones than engaging advice on how to avoid a trip to the E.R.?
everyone needs this book!!!.......2005-02-17
I wish I had read this book years ago, as it would have saved me great pain and expense. I wound up in the hospital last year running up my son's brick stairs barefoot, just before this book came into print. If this book had only half of the advise, it would still be worth ten times as much.
Buy this book for anyone you care about.
I couldn't put it down! And it actually did save a life........2005-02-15
No matter how many people I show this book to, they can not put it down. Very entertaining, learning about the everyday stupid things that we all do that put us in the emergency room. In all seriousness though, Dr. Pregerson and his book did get my 5 year old daughter into the E.R. in time for her appendicitis. I figured she was just over reacting to the Flu, which I knew was going around. Luckily, I was forced to realize I had an emergency on my hand.
Excellent Book.......2005-02-07
This is all the helpful information you always needed, in one place. Great advice from a reputable source-an ER doctor!! A must have book.
