Book Description
Earthy, magical, and utterly charming, this tale of family life in turn-of-the-century Mexico became a best-selling phenomenon with its winning blend of poignant romance and bittersweet wit. The classic love story takes place on the De la Garza ranch, as the tyrannical owner, Mama Elena, chops onions at the kitchen table in her final days of pregnancy. While still in her mother's womb, her daughter to be weeps so violently she causes an early labor, and little Tita slips out amid the spices and fixings for noodle soup. This early encounter with food soon becomes a way of life, and Tita grows up to be a master chef. She shares special points of her favorite preparations with listeners throughout the story.
The Spanish language edition of the best-selling Like Water For Chocolate is a remarkable success in its own right. Now, in this mass market edition, thousands of new readers will be able to partake in the sumptuous, romantic, and hilarious tale of Tita, the terrific cook with an extra special something in her sauce.

Customer Reviews:
The best story I've ever read!.......2006-08-01
I bought this book for my goddaughter who is a senior in high school and taking Spanish 4. But I have a copy myself and it is the best story I have ever read. The story has influenced my life, which is unusual for a novel. It is heart-warming, romantic, and inspiring for a decent gourmet chef like me. You'll love this story.
Como agua para chocolate.......2005-07-27
A look at the inner workings of a Mexican family through recipes, magic and sex. A charming read. Highly recommended.
a feast of the 5 senses, come to life.......2004-06-13
besides the excellent recipes wholly printed in the book version, here is my review of the movie, which is not as detailed nor able to be prolonged but is true to the book (unlike other movie versions of books in which some stuff is changed):
after you watch this movie, you will either want to eat, cook (preferably one of the mentioned recipes), make love or all three! i saw the version dubbed in spanish, and also read 3 selected chapters from the book, for spanish class. it's a work of art and genius, and it must be watched all the way through without stopping. the characters are excellently portrayed, and it combines love, feminism, drama, sensuality, lust, hope, passion, and humour, topped with cultural tradition and folklore. i don't know which one is better, the book or the movie. all of the 5 senses are provoked on a deep and perhaps even primal level, especially taste and smell, feverishly yearning for a sum greater than their overall parts (gestalt) - which brings up the sixth sense, intuition.
A Mexican Cinderella Story.......2003-04-30
Imaginatively told, romantic and sensual - this is a Latin-style fairy tale for adults only. Tita, our heroine, has a life of work & misery, caused by her mother who is cruel beyond reason to her and has brainwashed her since birth into believing that the youngest daughter must remain a spinster and take care of her mother for ever. Fortunately Tita is blessed with magical cooking skills that allow her to attract lovers and cast many types of spells over the people that consume her dishes, amazing events occur all around her. Tita is not the only talented member of the family either, her sisters are notable personalities as well.
I recommend this as a light & funny escape from reality.

taps many scenses.......2004-11-03
the first time I saw one of Laura's books we were in Phoenix
exhibiting my husbands sculpture show. The weather was hot the sun almost always lite the intense blue sky. Bruce first read the book and highly recommended it to me because of the similarities of ethnic origins.
To read Like Water for Chocolate is like taking a emotional course on life. Laura's story telling made it's way through my eyes and landed in my heart. Her descriptions of her emotions and the linking to food and it's preparation was superb. You will find that you prepare and enloy food in a way you never did before. If you want to be in someone else's shoes and heart for the length of this book then I highly recommend it. I savored every page of the last chapter, knowing that the end
was near, I could not bear to finish it. I have tried to explain my feeling through my sculpture, I can only hope that I can
achieve as well as Laura Esquirel does.
I always have one of her books on the go. Instead of reading from start to finish I now read a chapter here and there as an emothional treat. It's not where you end up, it's how you get there. thankyou Laura Esquirel for that.

The Leisure Architecture of Wayne McAllister Chris Nichols
The commercial architecture created by Wayne McAllister (1907-2000) is responsible for much of the character of Southern California. His Fred-and-Ginger nightclubs and glinting-steel-and-blazing-neon circular drive-ins brought Hollywood to life. His Sands Hotel in Las Vegas became the home of the Rat Pack; the mythology of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr. owes a great deal to the swank glamour of the Copa Room and the Sands Hotel, one of McAllister's finest.
Projects include Hotels and Nightspots:
1934 Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles
El Rancho Vegas Hotel, Las Vegas
1952 Sands Hotel, Las Vegas
Fremont Hotel, Las Vegas
Drive-Ins:
1935-42 Simon's Drive-in's, Los Angeles
Herbert's Drive-Ins, 7800 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles

Customer Reviews:
Well researched and thorough.......2007-08-30
Nichols presents an interesting look at many of the historic landmarks of Los Angeles and Las Vegas, painting the picture of times since forgotten. Being in my 20s, many of the landmarks I knew in name only, although I have seen and been to some, but in both cases, Nichols' book manages to evoke feelings of nostalgia and longing. The book is obviously painstakingly researched, and the sheer number of rare and hard-to-find photographs are enough to make any architecture or food history buff go ga-ga.
bittersweet tinge.......2007-05-15
Nichols gives a nostalgic retrospective on the long live and prodigious output of Wayne McAllister. In no small part, the book walks the reader back through the last 60 years of urban commercial architecture in the southern California region. McAllister lived a very long time, and he was responsible for designing iconic landmarks that at least in the hazy afterglow of memory, epitomise a classic time.
The book is replete with many photos and illustrations, the cover being an example of the latter. The most common image, if not exactly the most enduring, is Bob's Big Boy. I remember in the early 80s, when I arrived in Los Angeles, how these fast food restaurants and their mascots were everywhere. Even getting a cameo role in Terminator. Alas, as the years wore on, the Bob's Big Boys got steadily deprecated. Not many left.
Another type of McAllister's work has also fallen into the tar pits of history. He designed many of the drive-ins that dotted Los Angeles. And which were an indelible part of many teenagers' experiences. Sadly, most are long gone, brought down by the VCR and its successors. At least in the book, you can see several as they once were, at the peak of their glory. Actually, no matter how pretty the architecture, the sound was often bad, the food dreadful, the movies second rate and the nearby cars often had loudmouths.
Great book. But for some readers old enough, there is a certain bittersweet tinge to all this.

Book Description

Like Sonia Sanchez and Sandra Cisneros, Pat Mora draws on oral and lyrical traditions; she reclaims the history and culture of her Mexican roots, especially real and imagined Mexican women of the past, from a tribute to Frida Kahlo to an interview with an Aztec goddess.
Customer Reviews:
Review on Pat Mora's Agua Santa/ Holy Water.......2002-12-11
The very title of this collection of poems suggests hybridity; Mora employs her Chicana consciousness in her exploration of woman. Female familial relationships are inspected as well as Mora's relationship with herself. Serving as a seamless backdrop to this analysis is Mora's ethnicity. Never once is it used in violent opposition against her readers, rather, Mora presents themes in fluid terms. Wetness is a prevalent phenomenon in Mora's poetry; the book itself along with individual sections and poems are named for and dedicated to water. This lends itself to illuminate Mora's respect for and incorporation of history and its related cyclical tendencies.
A hypothetical mission statement for Agua Santa/ Holy Water would treat of cultural hybridity. Mora occupies otherwise nonexistent spaces and accordingly produces revolutionary poetry. Of the small yet powerful group of Latino poets Mora is the most successful in her delivery of any sort of Latino poetics. She is staunch in her insistence to write about her culture, yet is gentle in her staunchness. Her language vividly serves images of women consoling children ("Braided"), excelling as artists while failing as humans ("Dear Frida"), feeling displaced ("January in Cincinnati"), living and dying ("Metamorfosis") and yet ever-remaining part of the river of women. The result is a delightful feminist embarking into cultural excavation.
A Student's Perspective on Agua Santa: Holy Water.......2002-12-11
Pat Mora's book of poetry, Agua Santa: Holy Water, beautifies the experience of the Mexican-American woman. Each poem has its own distinct image and story, while maintaining a greater theme that brings the book together. Agua Santa is a perfect read for someone looking to learn about the Mexican culture, as long as they are willing to put in some extra research in order to receive the full benefit of Mora's poetry. For unless the reader is already quite familiar with Mexican mythology, and comfortable with religious references, he may not understand what Mora is saying through her work.
One underlying theme in Agua Santa is feminism. Many of her poems depict women in various roles; mothers, daughters, goddesses, etc., and challenge the reader to question exactly how he views them. The most powerful example of this, and the highlight of the book, is the "Cuarteto Mexicano," a quartet of poems from the perspectives of four well-known Mexican female figures. The full title of the section is "Talk Show Interviews with Coatlicue the Aztec Goddess, Malinche the Maligned, The Virgin of Guadelupe, and La Llorona: The Wailer." Readers should not be mislead by this title; poems are a far cry from any talk show interview they may have seen on daytime television.
Throughout her book, and specifically in this section, Mora attacks the labels and stigmas put on women, especially in her native Mexican culture. Her imagery and word choice is rich and intentional, and the poems are easy on the eyes and not too long. Any reader could pick up Agua Santa and be impressed by the language and sentiment, but to truly be moved one has to be willing to do some background work.
