Very Cool Concept.......2007-09-26
I love these creativity cards! The graphics on one side are unique, interesting, colorful, and eye catching. The prompts on the flipside are thought-provoking, meaningful, and different. The small journal is a great creative jumpstart in itself. I love the colors and techniques that were used to produce the backgrounds. Think I'll even attempt to create some of those myself. The box housing the creativity cards and journal is sturdy and pleasant to look at.
This is a fresh concept, and I am enjoying this package very much.
By the way, this is in no way a "how to" of any type. It is intended to make you think about doing old things in a fresh way or to help you attempt something new altogether.
Highly recommended.
Wow!.......2007-08-05
these cards are amazing. each one is a little piece of art in itself. you'll want to frame and hang them. except then you wouldn't be able to turn them over and get a shot in the arm of inspiration... yummy. i'm too afraid to work in the little workbook as yet, tho. i don't wanna mess it up. :)
if you're looking for cutesy, pretty art, tho, look somewhere else. this is real, gritty from-the-soul art. the kind that hits you "right there". and hopefully will help you make your own journal pages that do the same.
several of them are geared towards photography but lots of it is the kind that can be done with even an el cheapo camera. the author will also have you using tape, glue, spraypaint, and maybe a few things you never thought of as art supplies before. this is the kind of journaling that begs you to jump in and get messy.
if you do any kind of visual journaling, i highly recommend these cards and workbook.
So Much Fun.......2007-08-05
I got this after much thought. I figured it was just another "how to do a journal book". But, I found it to be much fun to do the exersizes and if you are an artist with a block, this will help to unblock you. It can give you ideas you never really thought of before on approaching your art work. Plus, as I said, it is a lot of fun to do the exersizes suggested on the individual cards. The kit also includes a fun little notebook/journal book to do as you please with. If you teach art, these are also fun ideas to inspire your students. I plan on doing that with my students this Fall.
This is a Gem.......2007-07-26
First of all, this will make a perfect gift for anyone crafty or involved in journaling, scrapbooking, altered books, ATCs, etc. It's a very affordable gift that keeps on giving.
The author opens your eyes to new ways to be creative in a way anyone, whether an "artist" or not, can use everyday observations to create real, unique, personal, fun, journal pages. She'll encourage you to take in all your surroundings and find a common element - she was able to find the common element while sitting in an Italian restaurant and watching war protesters: she, the waiter, the protesters were all waiting, caught up in a moment in time which was the theme she used for one one of her journal pages. She uses paint, photography and any object that she can use to express herself in her work -and makes no apologies. I LOVE this little gem. Just lovely and real. You won't be disappointed.
Great things come in little boxed sets..........2007-07-04
I noticed that there was a 1 star review of "Wide Open...". No offense, reviewer, but clearly you don't have a clue. Yes, the cards in the set are sort of vague -- if you are looking for step-by-step instructions for making something, don't waste your money on this. And, yes, you do need to own... and have some very basic knowledge of... art supplies (again, no offense, but if you've been within spitting distance of an art supply or craft store, then you'll know what gesso is).
[Ok, stepping off my soap box and done with the snarky comments.] Randi Feuerhelm-Watts is such an inspiration! I love her style and the ideas for inspiration that she presents on the cards go way beyond some of the tired, old suggestions that seem to always crop up in art/craft publications.
I read all the cards in one sitting (because I'm obsessive like that!) and I did notice that some of them related to each other. Not that they are dependent on each other or that you would be lost if you pick them at random... but I did observe some links between the individual ideas. I think this is great for continuing themes in your art work. Also, while she references photography quite a bit (she is a photographer after all), I definitely do not feel that any of the ideas are pigeonholed by the techniques. The author's basic ideas translate really well no matter what kind of visual artwork you might do.
The cards themselves each feature snippets of the author's artwork on the back. This alone is incredibly inspirational. You almost get double the bang for your buck - pull out one of the cards to interpret the visual side and then come back to it later for inspiration from the narrative side.
My only complaint would be about the Creativity Notebook... I wouldn't really call it a complaint, persay. I guess I'm just ambivalent about it's inclusion in the set. On one hand she has provided some great backgrounds to help you combat "white page syndrome" as well as some random instructions to offer a jump start to someone who is new to visual journaling. But on the other hand, I don't see myself personally using it since I already have half a dozen journals and prefer to make my own backgrounds (once you get on a roll, its half the fun).
The ideas and techniques are presented in Randi's conversational style, along with her great little stories. While I have not had the pleasure of taking a class with her or meeting her, she comes across as the kind of person you'd love to have as an art friend because she'd always be inspiring and challenging. I think that's the greatest thing about this kit... she's managed to package a ton of her personality and a lot of what I imagine she teaches in her workshops into one cool product. This set definitely gets a front row spot on my art-bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:
Battle throughout the ages.......2007-07-17
Nice complilation of historical battles with maps etc... A basic synopsis of famous/importanat battles throughoout history. A recommended book for those with an interest in historic warfare.
Battle: A Visual Journey Through 5,000 Years of Combat.......2007-07-16
Battle is the most complete military history reference book on the market. This amazing text contains short essays about famous/ infamous military leaders, summaries about particular battles throughout mankind's history (each complete with a map, approximate date of the battle, who participated in the battle, a short description of the whys of the incident, and in some cases an estimate of the number of casualties), and includes features that examine changes/ differences in military strategy and technology between various cultures and time periods from the ancient world to the current situation in Iraq. There are also some impressive illustrations showing military artifacts and details of some of the most interesting aspects of military technology.
Whether you are looking for a good military reference book for your kids, wanting to learn a little more about a particular battle, or are interested in the progression of war techniques throughout time, Battle is definitely your best bet. This is one of those books that gets read and used so many times that it pays for itself over and over again.
Brilliant!.......2007-01-17
This is an excellent source of military history information. Scholars may not think it complete, but to the novice or anyone interested in military history this is a great reference, learner and interesting read. There are thousands of battles included, each in a concise format familiar to the readers of DK books. Easy reading, without too many superfluous details - just the highlights and parts the average person needs to know. Highly recommended.
Good, If Sketchy, Overview of World Military History.......2006-07-15
This is another handsome book from DK.
The visuals are a combination of maps, timelines, weapons, uniforms, and portraits of military leaders. The text is mostly sketches of significant battles. Battles is a term loosely used in this book. Some of the sketches are actually of campaigns or entire wars. The organization is broadly chronological, with brief material on how warfare changed from era to another, and the battles grouped together by geographical areas. A latter section also covers some terrorist actions.
Grant starts with the war between the Sumerian city states of Lagash and Umma in about 2450 BC and ends not too far away in space -- the ongoing war in Iraq.
The book has the expected shortcomings. There is a very brief section on what we know about Pre-Columbian warfare in the Americans. There is no mention of sub-Saharan wars not involving Europeans.
There are some surprising typographical errors in dates and map scales but not enough to avoid the book.
Together with George C. Kohn's _Dictionary of Wars_, this book would serve as a good, quick reference on world military history or a memory refresher. Or you can simply use it to whet your appetite for more reading on subjects generally not taught in Western schools like the wars on the Indian sub-continent or between Korea and Japan.
Excellent Survey and Gateway.......2006-01-28
"Battle" can be described as a coffee table type book (although you may want to place it elsewhere when considering the subject matter) that is best suited for browsing. It surveys warfare throughout history and is quite sweeping and ambitious in scope. Generally, "Battle" is divided into eras/geographical areas and provides a briefing on the major powers and empires (and the rise and falls), strategic situations, weapons, tactics, and battles. The material is put together very well and contains many informative and striking pictures. In addition, it illuminates many periods and empires in areas such as India and China that are obscure to Westerners. Although probably not intended by the author, the reader is likely to grasp that any empire is fleeting when viewed in the context of history. Where "Battle" is lacking is in the descriptions of the individual battles. Generally that information is very brief and vague and those wanting details should look at other, more specific books. This is not surprising considering the immense scope. However, "Battle" is excellent for what it is and provides a gateway into the study of the many eras and participants of military history.

Customer Reviews:
Useless!!!.......2007-04-15
First and foremost, be aware if there is any reviews referring to "textbook", it's not for this "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" which is supposed to be a textbook companion.
"Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is useless!!! This is nothing but a bunch of glossary. And a half of the book is blank for writing notes. What a rip-off!!!
There's no outlines at all. No chapter summaries, no explanation of concepts. Totally useless.
I have used "Collins College Outlines" series (I rate them 3 stars)and "Barron's Business Reviews" series (I rate them 5 stars).
Never buy any of "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" series.
Technical notes: "Cram 101 Textbook Outlines" is POD (Print on demand). No wonder quality of printing is inferior (Looks like a xerox copy). And priced too high for this quality. For those who are not familiar with publishing industry--POD is used for ultra small quantity less than 100 copies. This is a telltale sign that book is not expected to sell minimum quantity (usually 3,000 copies) that commercial publisher is willing to
commit to publish. Simply put, POD means inferrior and
overpriced books. A work of amateur.
psychology: a journey (the outline, NOT textbook).......2007-02-09
there was not a very good description of the book. it looked as though it was the actual textbook, but it's just the outline (mostly with key definitions). there needed to be a picture of the book on the weebsite and it should have stated that it was a Cram 101, but either way it was cheaper and it has been working for me so far. so for the most part it's ok. i just thought i was getting something else.
CRAM 101.......2007-01-19
The book was misrepresented. I wanted to buy a paperback book called, "Psychology A Journey", 2nd edition, by Dennis Coon. But, instead I received a paperback book called "Cram 101, Psychology A Journey" which was an outline of the book I needed. I needed the book for a class I was taking at the time, therefore, I had to go elsewhere to find it. They sent me the same wrong book twice, and I had to return it twice. My advice would be not to buy this book unless you can be sure that it is the book you really want.
I was happy with my order.......2005-10-05
my order was before the hurrican Katrina, but my book still came on time. The book was used but it was like new with all the CD and code inside. I saved my money by ordering this book from Amazon for my class.
Book Description
This book is a compilation of unpublished talks with the contemporary Indian sage, Nisargadatta Maharaj. Recorded in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it represents some of the fundamental teachings of this important sage. All of the sayings point the reader back to the truth of one's true nature--one of undying peace and happiness.
Many contemporary teachers, such as Lama Surya Das, Wayne Dyer, and Jack Kornfield, draw on the words of Nisargadatta for inspiration and clarification. These wisdom-teachings are combined with photos of Maharaj and some of the locations he lived in in Bombay and the surrounding area. This book is a spiritual journey back to the source of true and abiding peace and happiness. Nisargadatta Maharaj was a simple family man, and owner of a cigarette shop. The beauty of his teachings lie in their remarkable clarity and wisdom, which is borne of the highest realization and spiritual understanding.

Wonderful help for anyone tired of personal ego stories........2007-01-04
Very short and easy to read. Quotes and pictures from a great spititual teacher. I was led to find sny of his writings when I heard Adyashanti say that he was his favorite teacher.
THE WISDOM TEACHINGS OF NISARGADATTA MAHARAJ.......2005-11-25
This is a beautiful book to open at random. Each and every page is a true delight. The stunning photographs and carefully chosen aphorisms are an inspiration for anyone interested in exploring the true nature of reality. A couple of random examples: "Whatever you take yourself to be will come to an end" and "Continuously hold on to what you are and not to what you know". The book is full of such mind-liberating sayings. The fact that they are brief extracts, rather than whole paragraphs, makes them particularly powerful - as the mind has little to grasp onto. The sayings are so direct and clear that they are beyond the need to be explained by intellectual means.
Needless to say, this book is highly recommended!

Six stars for this one?.......2004-03-20
How to critique a book beyond words? Absolutely wonderful, that's a divine pun, if you get it. If you do get it, you must surely check these wondeful pictures of a living saint (still alive in this book) and wisdom sayings that are beyond duality. Just wonderful reading every day. I check a page at random once or twice each day to remind myself of, well, nothing! Namaste!!!
Great Photo Filled Nisargadatta Book of Short Quotes.......2004-03-16
This wonderful book is covered with the great wisdom of Nisargadatta Maharaj and many rare photos of the great sage. His timeless message is captured in this great book with short, direct quotes the compiler recorded in studying with Nisargadatta. One outstanding quality of this book is that it offers the great teachings of Self-Realization in short aphorisms that capture the essence of non-duality teachings with a true economy of words.
The main focus of the teachings is intuitively knowing your "I AM-ness" or Consciousness, going deeply into it so that you wake up to your true nature as the Unborn.
I recommend adding it to your library of spiritual gems. His teachings are always very direct and powerful, right to the Heart of the Absolute Reality!
"If you want the happiness of self, get rid of the body-mind sense"
"Nothing is done by me, everything just happens I do not expect, I do not plan, I just watch events happening, knowing them to be unreal."
"You do not have any problems, only your body has problems...In your world, nothing stays, in mine nothing changes."
Nisargadatta Maharaj
simply wonderful.......2003-09-26
It is a diamond of soulful delights. It sparkles all throughout. Simple. Wonderful. Page, after page contains more than infinite words or timeless photos. It is truly a cornerstone. It is a mirror, that will shine through you and more. Beyond. Enjoy!
Book Description
Ken Wilber called Ramana Maharshi "the greatest sage of the 20th century." The Dalai Lama, C. G. Jung, the president of India, and other luminaries have all paid homage to him. Mahatma Gandhi held him in such regard that he would send people to experience the wisdom and spiritual atmosphere at his hermitage.
This is an artistic presentation of the wisdom teachings of this great man (1879-1950). His aphorisms--representing the heart of all paths that lead to recognition of the ultimate reality--are set against a collection of rare photos of him. The book is designed to be especially accessible to those who have a serious interest in mysticism and meditation, yet are unamiliar with foreign terminology.

pictures & a direct path.......2006-11-07
Ramana's path is clear as are the images of this sage.Try his simple teaching & in time you might start feeling very grateful for having come across this book.
Doubts will cease!.......2006-04-11
As one with academic training in philosophy, I reluctantly concede...yes, truth can be found in, um, a picture book. What's more, you may not need to go farther than that.
On page 109:
"There is no use removing doubts. If we clear one doubt, another arises, and there will be no end of doubts. All doubts will cease only when the doubter and his source have been found. Seek for the source of the doubter, and you find he is really nonexistent. Doubter ceasing, doubts will cease."
And looking at the pictures of Ramana in this book, doubts cease.
Outstanding collection of photos and quotes.......2006-03-09
This is an extraordinarily fine collection of photos and quotes of Ramana Maharshi. Excellent for those new to him and his teaching, as well as old hands.
Can anyone help me identify the young western man who is pictured on page 77? He's around the middle of the page, sitting up straight with a strip of white cloth wrapped around his head. I think this may be Robert Adams (see "Silence of the Heart"), but I am unable to make a positive identification. Please post here if you know the identity of this man.
Home . . ........2006-03-04
If I could choose only one book to take to a deserted island, this would be it.
THE ESSENTIAL TEACHINGS OF RAMANA MAHARSHI.......2005-11-25
Ramana Maharshi was really the great inspiration behind the modern 'Advaita' movement. The simple, direct, nature of his words will inspire for centuries, one can be sure. When he says, for instance: "Realization consists of getting rid of the false idea that one is not realized", suddenly a door that was locked becomes open. When he says: "You are the Self. You are already and eternally That", who is going to argue with him? This is what everyone wants to hear ... and this is the truth for every man and woman. With such simple and direct guidance, why seek out complicated intellectual ramblings? Staying with the simple, clear words of Ramana Maharshi are in themselves enough. The book is highly recommended, not only for the beautiful, inspiring words, but also for the large number of photos of Ramana in many different situations.

Book Description
Bombay Art Deco presents a treasury of Art Deco buildings comprising residential, commercial and civic architecture created during the glamorous and optimistic era of the mid 1930's and 1940's. The architects, a small list of first generation Indian architects and builders, were mostly educated in English schools and trained in western architectural traditions, if not actually in the West. Impatient with the British reluctance to shed the Gothic and Indo - Saracenic architectural styles that had dominated Imperial Bombay's urban landscape, these visionaries were determined to imbue the city with a new modern style. That style shares its provenance with the Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach, termed Tropical Deco by author Laura Cerwinske in her seminal 1981 book. Built in the same era, the Art Deco architecture of the two cities exhibits similar scale, geometry, tropical vocabulary, and love of romance.
Customer Reviews:
Faded Eastern promise.......2007-08-01
Who would have thought that Bombay would have the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings outside of Miami Beach. There is a photo on pages 272-273 of Marine Drive, Bombay and you could be forgiven for thinking, at a quick glance, that this might be Ocean Drive, Miami. Navin Ramani reveals the background to this remarkable architectural heritage in the front of his book: the opening of the Suez Canal, a merchant class settling in Bombay, the city becomes the center of the Indian architectural profession and extensive land reclamation from 1929 all helped to create a unique Far Eastern Deco habitat.
The book's many photos show plenty of apartments and commercial buildings with their concrete curved lines, geometric floor patterns and streamlined appearance. It's unfortunate though that the photos also show plenty pipe-work and aircon units spoiling the external look of so many of them. It is the movie palaces that really show off the Deco style. The interiors of the five featured bubble over with streamline curves, recessed lighting and flamboyant marble floor patterns.
Ramani's book will surely be the definitive one about Bombay deco but I was rather disappointed with many of the author's photos. They lack a sharpness and the color is rather muted and dull. I became aware of this when I compared them with Arnold Schwartzman's clean, focused photos of Deco LAndmarks: Art Deco Gems of Los Angeles and in fact there is a good example of the photographic difference in Ramani's book on pages 256-257, on the left is a dull, flat photo of 63 Marine Drive, Bombay and the right a similar looking Hotel Victor in Miami but the photo is sharp, clean and colorful. Still, despite this Bombay Art Deco is certainly worth having if you love this exuberant architecture.

A Beautiful Visual Journey of Art Deco in Bombay and Miami Beach.......2007-07-16
Bombay Art Deco is a beautiful book in many ways. The colorful photos of the Art Deco buildings complement the well-written prose. Navin Ramani is the perfect person to write such a book. He grew up in a Bombay Art Deco building as a child and now lives in South Florida and has immersed himself Miami Beach Art Deco. He truly loves and respects the architecture and is an advocate for its preservation. He takes beautiful photos, too.
As a Miami Beach Art Deco guide myself, I loved the chapter on BoMi(BOmbay-MIami Beach), A Tale of Two subtropical Deco Cities. The chapter compares the similar climate, seaside geography, optimism and Hollywood ties of Bombay and Miami Beach. On one page is a Miami Beach landmark and on the facing page is a comparable Bombay landmark. The similarities are truly amazing and one could easily be interchanged with the other. For example, the Indian Merchants Chamber (1935-40) is juxtaposed to what is now Jerry's Famous Deli (1940). The caption is "Curves folding in on curves."
I recommend this book to anyone who likes Art Deco. AFter reading this book, you will want to travel to Bombay to see these buildings for yourself.
Simply superb .......2007-03-14
For anyone in love with Mumbai or with Art Deco architecture, this book is an absolute must. Lovingly photographed and produced, you get to see everything from the Asiatic Library and the Cricket Club to the lovely cinemas Liberty, Eros, and Regal. A must for any armchair traveller and Mumbai lover, as well as required reading for architecture buffs.

Book Description
"Remembering to Live" is about the struggle for emotional, professional, and spiritual growth, as well as related struggles (particularly their humorous sides)...from love to heartbreak, from peace to fear, from spirituality to fortune cookies. Mark Tomkins matches photographs with text and creates Visual Poems that are expressive and multidimensional. He is an author and an award-winning photographer whose work is exhibited internationally.
"Visual Poems come into being with a force all their own, not so much through the processes of writing and photography, as through getting out of their way and letting them into the world. With only the vaguest claim of 'authorship' they are brought to you...enjoy." Mark Tompkins

Thought provoking words and images.......2003-05-11
Mark L. Tompkins wonderfully shares his perspective of the world with us through his beautiful poems and photography.
passion and vision.......2003-04-21
This book is so easy to personally identify with. The poems and photographs inspire my own vision and passion; not someone elses. I keep it on my coffee table and refer to it a moment at a time.
A wonderful read........2003-03-16
I received the book as a gift and it now resides among my other collection on the coffee table. It's a wonderfully insightful look into the trials and tribulations of the human "condition" with photography that is both poignant and storytelling in itself. There's probably a little bit of us all in this book..
Deeply Moving.......2003-03-12
Fabulous read and a fantastic gift for someone you care about! Almost every poem touched me in some way. I feel a real connection with the messages Mark Tompkins imparts, his themes of slowing down to live each moment, making your life count for something, moving through the moments of pain and disappointment, etc. His photographs that are paired with the poems are breathtaking and poignant. I can't recommend this enough!
Remembering to Live.......2003-03-09
A book filled with beautiful sentiments in addition to beautiful photographs. Mr. Tompkins reveals much about himself in both his poetry and his pictures and by doing so, as the name of the book implies, he encourages each one of us to remember to live, and reminds us of the common thread that we all share with the rest of humanity.
Book Description
"Behind the Scenes of Hindi Cinema is an insightful journey into the complex worlds of fantasy and reality inhabited by creative artistes. India is a unique country that exists in multiple centuries simultaneously. This book unravels the various mysteries and contradictions embedded in our centuries-old tradition. (…) Using defined sections and relevant case studies, the authors analyse the emotional ingredients that form the essence of India and Indian cinema." (Excerpt from the Foreword by Amitabh Bachchan)
Behind the Scenes of Hindi Cinema explores the inner world of Bombay film, the best known of India’s movie industries. Many aspects of Hindi cinema are brought to life on the pages of this richly illustrated book – from its beginnings to the present day. The use of songs to advertise movies, the role of censorship, devotion to god and family: these subjects and many more are illuminated. It reveals the symbolism of the divine role models Radha–Krishna and Ram–Sita at the heart of the main protagonists in many films, and the passion of the people working behind the scenes. It examines the changing face of the nation’s enemies, the marriage scene, lyricists and playback singers, and it sheds light on Tamil cinema, which rivals the Hindi film industry in output and popularity. The book concludes with an analysis of the mass appeal of Hindi film beyond India’s borders and the recent embrace of the much-hyped ‘Bollywood’ phenomenon in the West.
Customer Reviews:
A Visual Journey without Much Substance.......2006-11-13
Beautiful pictures, arty design, but not much of substance in this book. Its really more of a pictorial history. This book gives very little insight into modern Hindi films. Living in India, and watching a number of Hindi films, I find they are a window into Indian mindset and worldview. And if you suspend your irony, some moments of silly fun. Too bad this book doesn't unlock more of the secrets of Bollywood.
The Best Book on Bollywood available.......2006-08-10
I took on the task of doing an extensive study of the modern Bollywood cinema, in comparison to the current atmosphere of South Asia/India
Of all the Bollywood books I read, this one was, by far, the best one available
The book showcases aspects and foundations of the Bollywood cinema genre, including the roles of villains, hereos, heroines, etc, and how each of them tie into the common dramatic themes and stories of Bollywood films
In addition, the book is filled with EXCELLENT pictures, giving great visual justification to every major point and argument
Lastly, it does a good job of referencing many Bollywood films, both new and classical, giving readers a good opportunity to go back and review those films, if need be
Overall, this book is advertised and marketed as a sensational fanbook of Bollywood, but from an intellectual and film scholar perspective, I would conclude that this is the best book on Bollywood that I have read and studied, both sensationally and intellectually
Thank you for reading and Happy Buying!!!!
the lively, colorful world of Bollywood.......2005-08-30
The heavily-illustrated work imparts the carnivalesque style of the now globally popular Bollywood films of India--the exotic, often extravagant, costumes, the promotional stunts, the common themes such as traditional morality and romance and marriage, the blaring music, the theater and constant motion and sense of anticipation and surprise. In the foreword, Amitabh Bachchan explains the Bollywood films are "inspired by epic and folk theatre." In the early days of the films, movie moguls would send messengers with drums to announce a film's opening; like Indian royalty in ages past would have bells and drums sounded to call the public for an announcement. The often collage-like visual material is so vivid and jumpy that it can override the text. But for ones looking for material on the making and promotion of Bollywood films, social and religious subjects reflected in them, their distribution in the global entertainment system, and the marginal, yet influential Tamil cinema, it's found in substantive chapters by different writers knowledgeable in these areas. A timely, unique work on the Bollywood films whose mixed, yet focused content mirrors the mixed elements and vitality of such films.

Fun for kids...even if they do not know any Russian..........2007-01-20
Our family just returned from an extended stay in Russia, and my 11-year learned bits and pieces of the language. This tape doesn't really teach her any new language, but she loves to hear familiar songs sung in Russian. We feel that it is unlikely that Russian children sing "Wheels on the bus," but she likes listening to it in Russian anyway. Even children who do not already know any Russian will recognize some of the songs on the tape.
Could be better.......2007-01-17
I enjoyed listening to the songs on this tape, which was a pleasent change of pace from repeating phrases from other language programs I use.
The main problem I had with it was the song translations in the back. For the songs that are well known in English, they simply write down word for word the lyrics of the English version, even though the actual Russian translation would be different. For example, for the song "head, shoulders, knees and toes," the Russian translation is written "head, shoulders, knees and toes." Something didn't seem right while I was learning the song, so I started looking up the words one by one. Instead of "head," the first word in the Russian version was "mouth;" the second was "nose," instead of shoulder, and so on. You can see how this would create problemsm for anyone picking up vocabulary words from the songs.
I didn't notice this in the traditional Russian songs that had no well known English versions, however. These songs turned out to be my favorites, especially the "Two Happy Geese."
Could I be missing something?.......2004-12-16
I am suprised by the other reviews on here. I feel like I must be missing something.
I guess the music is cute to listen to and probably more enjoyable for my 9 yr old son but as far as learning anything from it, I can't possibley imagine how anyone could.
The tape has songs, the book has some (? who knows, maybe all --can't read it) of the lyrics written in Russian without any translation. There is NO TRANSLATION in the book or on the tape (with the exception for when they are counting to 10 on the tape).
That's it!! Nothing more! How are we supposed to learn anything from that?? I feel like we wasted our money.
To help you understand you kids!.......2002-11-20
My husband is Russian and my kids understand and speak Russian, This tape and book helped me learn to pick out words when I hear them in a conversation. Now my in-laws have conversations and I answer them in English.
Also my daughter loves singing the songs.
Russian for the younger set.......1999-02-24
I thought this was a very cute introduction to Russian. The tape is a great idea because you can tell if you are pronouncing words and phrases correctly. It could have been improved by using traditional Russian songs instead of translated American songs. Also--I could live without the guy oversinging the songs in English. All in all, a very good way to support your child's interest in Russian language.

A personal selection of 100 masters .......2007-08-23
This album is a personal selection of one- hundred great artists from Fra Angelico to Warhol. The subtitle suggests that the artists will be presented in chrnological order but they are in fact presented alphabetically. One full page illustration of a painting is selected for each artist. There is short accompanying material about the artist and the work, with another small photo on the opposite page. The selection of the artists, I found a bit eccentric with there being a number of names who are not ordinarily considered part of the first- rank.
This is not an outstanding album but of course many of the illustrations are of great works, and can truly hold the attention and interest.
