5 out of 5 stars Best yet.......2007-10-08

Any series featuring a single main character runs a risk of getting stale, following a formula. I'm delighted to say that has not only NOT happened with White Knight, it's the best book yet.

Harry Dresden grows emotionally. His relationships with his brother and Murphy change and develop in both heartbreaking and heartwarming ways. And the main plot gets more exciting and more engrossing in each book, something that rarely occurs. My only complaint (as usual) is that it will be so long before the next book!

Jim does it again! Harry Dresden continues to grow and evolve as a character. Fast paced and I couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Dead or Disappeared.......2007-09-21

White Night (2007) is the ninth Urban Fantasy novel in the Dresden Files series, following Proven Guilty. In the previous volume, Harry fetched Molly Carpenter back from Arctis Tor, with a little help from his friends. He took her back to her family, but she decided to turn herself in to the White Council for violations of the Fourth Law.

At the trial, the Merlin arbitrarily convicted her of using black magic and sentenced her to death. Harry pointed out that the Gatekeeper hadn't yet cast his vote. Then Ebenezar McCoy arrived with survivors of the Warden training group accompanied by Molly's father Michael. Merlin reconsidered his verdict and Molly became Harry's apprentice.

In this novel, Sergeant Murphy has a probable suicide, but she rides a hunch and calls in Harry. He checks out the scene and casts a spell at a particular place on the wall. The notation "EXODUS 22:18" appears and Karrin knows the victim was murdered.

Suddenly, Murphy strikes out with a foot sweep and a young woman -- little more than a girl -- becomes visible and falls to the floor. Harry's apprentice Molly hasn't done as he told her and now she has a few bruises and pains to remind her to obey her master. Not that she is going to pay attention, but one more lesson won't hurt . . . much!

Harry does congratulate her on the invisibility spell, but points out that both he and Sergeant Murphy had noticed a few out-of-place sounds and smells. Molly needs to put in some extra practice, but she is improving. Molly goes home happy, but aching in several places.

In this story, Harry and Murphy find other victims around Chicago and elsewhere. Most of the Chicago victims belong to a witch group known as Ordo Lebes, which Dresden translates in his correspondence course Latin as "Order of the Big Pot". Karrin, however, suggests that a better interpretation would be "Order of the Cauldron". But one victim does not belong to this order.

Harry also discovers that one of the Ordo Lebes is Helen Beckitt, whom he has had problems with in the past. Although she cooperates with Harry and Murphy and doesn't even deny her prison record, Dresden just can't bring himself to trust her. When he discovers that she works for John Marcone, both Harry and Murphy become suspicious of her behavior.

Harry meets another old acquaintance on this case. Elaine had been his first girl, but they had parted after Harry killed their mentor. While the White Council ruled that the killing was in self-defense, Elaine was already gone. Yet she had not forgotten him and even followed his career path as a consulting wizard.

This story also has a minor side plot involving the fallen angel Lasciel. The shadow of Lasciel residing in his mind provides some useful services, such as translation of dead languages, but is still trying to seduce him to the evil side. It occurs to Harry that such seduction can go both ways and he treats "Lash" as an almost trusted friend. Some surprising changes occur.

While Harry doesn't really like being a Warden of the White Council, he hasn't considered it as a handicap. Then a mysterious Grey Cloak is noticed as somehow involved with the dead witches and everybody is afraid to tell Harry. And his brother Thomas is often observed with these victims shortly before their death or disappearances. Being an enforcer for the Council is bad enough without the paranormal community wondering whether you are responsible for these passings.

Highly recommended for Butcher fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of preternatural creatures, paranormal individuals, and strange happenings.

5 out of 5 stars All Time Classic.......2007-10-03

This is a timeless coming of age story and an all time classic good read. Farmgirl Fern saves the pig Wilbur, the runt of the litter. She raises him like one of the family as much as possible. Wilbur is horrified, afraid and lonely when he's sold to Fern's uncle. To help him through this difficult time, Charlotte the spider becomes his friend and undertakes the writing challenges of her life when she spins words into her web to help save Wilbur's life. Meanwhile, Fern is growing up, becoming interested in boys and spending less time with Wilbur. Wilbur is taken to compete at the county fair and Charlotte goes along, even though it's the twilight of her life. She gives her all for Wilbur at the fair and in return, Wilbur saves her egg sac and takes it back to the farm with him upon her death. The next spring the little spiders hatch and begin to leave and Wilbur, who desperately misses Charlotte, believes he's destined to be alone. However, three of Charlotte's offspring decide to stay at the farm with Wilbur, insuring that he will have friends in the future. Wilbur welcomes them to the farm and tells the baby spiders about their mother and her legacy.

Along with the main characters, there's a cast of additional farm animals that help move the story along. It's good read for kids, and I've reread it as an adult. I liked it just as much then as the first time I read it. So will you.

5 out of 5 stars Life Lessons.......2007-10-01

What a great book. One of the themes of this work is the reality of death. The author approaches this topic with the delicacy required for the young audience.

Wilbur is faced with possibility of an early demise because he is the runt of his litter. His wise and caring friend, Charlotte, devises a plan to save his life and though it works, she looses her life in the end.

The book is much more than this theme alone, but it is the most salient and captivating.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A very good children's story that use the mechanism of talking insects,
as well as arachnids, of course, to discuss friendship, life, and
death, and the roles of things in the world.

Perhaps a little sentimental, given the amount of pig saving antics that are found within. People have to eat, after all.

Book Description

The New York Times-bestselling author of Falling Awake and All Night Long takes her fans beyond the everyday boundaries of the mind-and the heart-in a compulsively readable new novel of paranormal power, deception, and danger . . .

Petite, thirtysomething Clare Lancaster is a Level Ten para-sensitive-and a "human lie detector." Over the years, she's come to accept that someone with her extraordinary talents is likely to have trouble in the relationship department. And she's even resigned herself to the fact that everyone, to one degree or another, hides behind a façade. . . .

And now it seems that meeting the half sister and family whom she never knew until seven months ago was a mistake. Her father summons her from California to play a role in his business empire, and Clare doesn't intend on making the same mistake twice. But after meeting Jake Salter, Archer Lancaster's "financial consultant," Clare is convinced that things aren't what they seem. Salter's careful conversation seems to walk a delicate line between truth and deception, revealing and resisting. Something sparks and sizzles between them-something more than the usual electricity between a man and a woman.

Caught in a dizzying storm of secrets, lies, and half-truths, Jake and Clare will plunge into an investigation that demands every bit of their special gifts-together they must overcome their mutual distrust in order to unravel a web of conspiracy and murder.

2 out of 5 stars IT'S A SIN TO TELL A LIE.......2007-06-08

After reading "The River Knows" I decided to read White Lies by JAK. Since it was the same author, I thought I would like it just as well. It was an interesting read. Liked the main characters and learned a little about the paranormal abilities.

It was a fast read and amusing at times. Not a very heavy read and the romance was a little tepid. Not bad for an afternoon's entertainment.

I liked "White Lies" by Linda Howard better. Try that one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty interesting story line.......2007-05-14

This review is for the audio CD version:
This is the first novel I have read from this author, or about the arcane society. I found it interesting and liked how the events and clues to the mystery unfolded bit by bit. I also thought the chemistry was very good between the male and female main character. After listening to this story I don't have a strong desire to listen/read the rest of the arcane society books or find out what comes next.

Now, as far as the actual narration.... It was horrible. I listen to many books on CD and this had by far the worst narration. It was almost like a joke. The acting was very fake, really to the point of being totally over done. Sometimes just the way it was read made the story hard to follow because of the way it was said, or the speed of words, etc. The narration of this story definately took away from enjoyment of it, and almost made me stop listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-04-14

JAK takes the paranormal Arcane Society into the present-day (originally set in 19th century England with the Amanda Quick series), and the results are quite intriguing. It is most interesting to see that her paranormals must operate under the radar in the present world equally as much as they did in the past, with the resultant contretemps between the protagonists. Both the plotting and character development are excellent, and I am delighted to see this turn in JAK's writing. Keep them coming, please!

5 out of 5 stars If you love her Jayne Castle books, you'll enjoy this!!.......2007-04-14

While I enjoy the Amanda Quick books and have read (so far) one of the Arcane Society novels, I enjoy Jayne Castle and Jayne Ann Krentz futuristic and contemporary mysteries even more. This book as one reviewer has already said is a blend of both and for me, a very entertaining and delightful blend!

The Prologue occurs some eight months before the start of the book. Clare Lancaster and her half sister, Elizabeth Glazebrook, are meeting for the first time in a bookstore cafe in Phoenix, Arizona. Clare and Elizabeth have been emailing each other and now Elizabeth has asked for Clare's help. Clare and Elizabeth are both "sensitives" and registered with the Arcane Society. Clare is a level-ten "lie detector" while Elizabeth is much lower level sensitive with her speciality being colors. Elizabeth is married to Brad McAllister who has sent her to a psychiatrist. Brad has told her and her family that Elizabeth is having a nervous breakdown. Elizabeth is afraid something else is going on and that Brad is having an affair and trying to kill her!!

Eight months later, Jake Salter is on the veranda at the Glazebrook home in Stone Canyon, Arizona watching Clare arrive in her small rental car. He can tell she is a sensitive and when Clare meets Jake and he introduces himself, she also can tell he is a high level sensitive - a hunter - and that while he claims to be a business consultant to Archer Glazebrook, Clare's biological father, Clare knows he is not telling the full truth. The reader also learns that 6 months previous, Brad McAllister was found dead and was found by Clare who was temporarily a suspect in his death which is unresolved. Clare is viciously verbally attacked at the party by Valerie McAllister Shipley, Brad's mother now married to Archer's former business partner, Owen Shipley. Valerie even goes out and smashes Clare's rental car's windshield.

As Clare and Jake begin to very, very cautiously work together to find the real killer of Brad McAllister, Clare has more close calls and the mystery deepens as many plot motives from relationships to money to corporations to Arcane Society business appear.

I loved how the mysteries are resolved, the items left unsolved for future books (?) and Ms. Krentz's wonderful sense of humor and romance!

A definite "can't put it down until I'm finished" read for me.

3 out of 5 stars Barely able to keep my attention.......2007-04-05

I'm listening to this audio book. I have not read a lot of JAK, but I have to say that her dialog/narrative is really uninteresting and routine. The number of times she takes time to describe "cracking eggs in the nonstick pan" or "she took a sip of her cold green tea", etc. So boring! Instead, maybe she should spend more time describing the internal struggles/emotions of the characters. That would make for much better writing. So far, no passion in these characters... (despite a sex scene)... just generic storytelling. There is no snappy dialog or humor, either. I'll continue to listen only because I am interested in finding out the murderer. Otherwise, BORING!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not really all-in-one.......2007-05-14

In my opinion this book is pretty good for study material, but the things it lacks are more in-depth thinking questions for every chapter.

I am not sure about the writing style. This book does have formal way of writing to present the materials but it sometime overlaps with previous chapters which made me feel boring. I prefer an easier to understand writing style instead of formal.

If this book is arranged and written according to compTIA objectives just like sybex does with its books, I think this will make the reader easier to navigate the area that they want to focus more.

This book covers cryptography in great details which is good, even though not all of them will be examined, such as the way how the algorithm is written and the formula.

As for other things, this book is good enough, worth reading but to really pass security+ exam, other books are recommended in combination with this book. I passed the exam with the help of this book along with sybex Fast Pass and got the measureup from newhorizon which is a training center that I used.

5 out of 5 stars Security +.......2007-03-08

The book is relevant to the Certification objectives. I recommend it to all those who are interested in certifying for Security + exam.

3 out of 5 stars Take care.......2007-02-13

The book is so good just take care becouse.....
the book says "Include: Learningkey video trainning" and this is false the book does not have any video.

5 out of 5 stars Best Security+ on the market.......2007-02-08

I have read three books for this exam: Shon Harris CISSP, this book, and the ultimate Security+ exam cram book. I also sampled a large deal of books at barnes and Noble...

As far as Security+ books go this is hands down the best one. Everything is explained in great detail in a clear and concise fashion. I liked the format of the book too. Initially most topics are touched upon, then in later chapters they are expanded upon. For those not familiar with education techniques, this is one of the best ways to help the reader retain the information. You first introduce the basic concepts, and how they fit into a larger picture, and then later on go further into detail. This is better than tackling each subject in order, and really accelerates the learning process.

It also repeats important concepts several times, and constantly refreshes you on the topic. Many things in security are interconnected... If you learn about Kerberos, or single sign on early in the book then you might forget exactly what it does when you reach the later chapters. This book is good in refreshing you on details so you never get lost in the jargon. Every time a crucial process is reintroduced for a different subject area, it is re-explained and shown how it fits into the current topic. This saves you from a lot of frustration and is done in a where you actually need it (so it doesn't seem overly repetitive).

As others have mentioned, NOT EVERYTHING is covered. Still, the book does a very good job of covering core concepts. I do reccommend Shon Harris' CISSP book to fill in the holes. While the CISSP book covers more material than is covered in the Security+, it overlaps a great deal. You can just skip over the parts you don't need to know in detail and read the parts also included on the Security+ exam. They compliment each other very well. Between the two, there are practically no holes. The two books also presented each other very differently and I wasn't bored, nor did I feel like I was reading the same stuff over and over again.

The only other con is that yes, the end of the chapter questions are WEAK. They don't assess your knoweledge very well at all. In fact, you can skim a chapter and still do fine on the questions. You'd probably be well off using commercial testing solutions if you want to evaluate your knoweledge of the subject..

Overall the book does its job. It is a solid primary source of information. I really encourage people to buy and read this book first before studying anything else for the Security+. If you read this book and still want to know more, the CISSP book by Shon Harris is extremely good supplementary reading. Read those two books, understand their topics, and you WILL pass the Security+ easily. While this may be a lot of reading, it will cover just about EVERYTHING you need to know.

ABOUT THE TEST:

While people say that Security+ is an "entry level" security certification, people need to realize this isn't an entry level category. Security+ requires users to have a great deal of experience/knoweledge in the IT field, otherwise you probably will fail. I was very suprised when I started studying for this test. It covers a large spectrum of technology and applications and also goes enough into detail that you have to actually know and understand the technology and procedures involved. I have used this test as a steping stone for the CISSP (there is a LOT of overlapping), and I think it is well worth the effort.

Who needs to take this test? Well I'd reccommend it before taking the MCSE (it gives you credit towards a MCSE/MCSA requirement. It is also a great way to prepare towards a CISSP, the most accepted security certification. Really, it is like a more reasonable form of the CISSP being that it is widely available at testing centers and costs far less to take the test. I think this certification is dragged down because of the "easy" reputation of A+ and Network+, which truly are "entry level" tests. Anyone who wants to show security competence should take this test..

5 out of 5 stars Good guide.......2007-01-03

I used this book for a class that required it as well as for prep for the CompTIA Security+ Certification. I found it quite useful and passed my test from the study I did in class and this book alone. It's comprehensive and well organized.

I think I hurt from laughing after I finished this. I bought it ages ago, but kept putting it aside. The cover was just so bland. I finally reached the bottom of my TBR stack and there is still was. Now I am sorry I put it off so long.

I adore Lucern! What a grumpy sexy vampire. Him in the supermarket wanting to bite the steak was brilliant!

Highly recommended for someone who needs a smile on their face.

Cannot wait to read the rest in this series.

5 out of 5 stars A fun and sexy read.......2007-06-10

I loved this book. I like vampire novels and I really like Lynsay Sands' Argeneau family series. The book is easy to read (very fast). It is so funny that at times I would be laughing out loud and get very curious looks from my husband and children. It is just a fun, sexy and entertaining book to read and continues the mythology of the Argeneau family. I've read all the other books in the series, but not in order and had no problem following along.

4 out of 5 stars Romance.......2007-05-22

This was a fun book to read. I enjoy throwing in a little lighter reading between serious books.

4 out of 5 stars funny.......2007-03-07

At first it is funny. I laughed out loud imagining Lucian holding the phone to his ear while talking on speaker phone. Later in the book it gets more serious and sexy.

5 out of 5 stars Great series.......2006-08-28

I have read all the Argeneau series and they are great reads. Funny where they should be and super sexy. I hope there are more to come!

Book Description

In his classic and beloved novel, E. B. White tells the memorable story of Wilbur, a little pig who becomes famous with the help of his clever friend Charlotte and their chatty animal neighbors. As the runt of the litter, Wilbur struggles to survive from the very beginning. Fern fights her father, Mr. Arable, to raise Wilbur and nurse him to health. Fern succeeds and Wilbur moves to the Zuckerman farm, where he learns the true meaning of friendship from the wise grey spider Charlotte. When it becomes apparent that Wilbur is being well fed for a reason, Charlotte and Wilbur are determined to foil Mr. Zuckerman's plans. With the help of Charlotte and her "terrific" webs, Templeton the rat, and other colorful barnyard friends, Wilbur becomes the prizewinning pig of the County Fair and the most famous pig ever.

Lessons of friendship, loyalty, and truth bind this story together and show readers that friends come in all shapes and sizes.

Illustrations by the artist Garth Williams bring to life these lovable characters. He is also the illustrator of E. B. White's Stuart Little.

5 out of 5 stars same book you read as a child .......2007-07-28

This is the same book you read as a child but in a hard cover, with giant print. I am really happy with the high quality of this book.

5 out of 5 stars No one should leave childhood without this book!.......2007-06-06

Charlotte's Web is a terrific book to use when your child is ready for read-aloud novels. What a life time memory this will create for you both as you read chapter by chapter aloud. It has a perfect theme of friendship to encourage so much dialogue. Don't let your child leave childhood without it in his/her memory!

5 out of 5 stars Great reading with your little one.......2007-06-01

This was one of the first "long" books that my 5 year old and I have read together, as opposed to picture story books. He absolutely loved it. Our only issue was sticking to one chapter a night, as he was always begging me to continue for just 1 more page!

The story is tender and realistic; a little sad in places, but good life lessons for even sensitive listeners - and a happy ending. My only very minor negative would be that in places the vocabulary and dialogue are a bit specific to time & place (American farmland), so culturally diverse young readers might need some explanation. I was easily able to substitute or explain a word here or there, and my son followed the story just fine.

5 out of 5 stars A Special Friendship.......2007-03-30

Hey kids! If you like pigs and adventures, you should read this fantastic book. It's called Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. The pig's name is Wilbur. He is born on a farm during the springtime. Fern rescues him from being slaughtered. She gets to keep Wilbur and take care of him. Wilbur loves to follow Fern around the yard but later, Fern finds out that Wilbur has to be sold. This crushes Fern's heart. I cried at this part. It was super sad.
Some good news came along Wilbur got sold to Fern's Uncle Zuckerman. Wilbur gets transferred over to the Zuckermans' farm just up the road from Fern's house. On the farm Wilbur meets an interesting friend. A spider named Charlotte. She makes webs that have writing in them. Later, Mr. Zuckerman enters Wilbur in a contest.
Do you think Wilbur will win the contest? If you want to find out hop over to your nearest library and grab this book. This book made me cry, laugh and wonder what would happen next. I thought this book was the best book ever. I think you should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Garrett's Best Review.......2007-03-07

Charlotte's Web

This action packed and heartwarming book was great! Fern, an eight year old farm girl, saved a young pig from being killed. She named him Wilbur, the main character, who is a runt piglet, and he is friendly and sensitive. Wilbur lived in a barn, the setting, in the barn cellar, and there were many different animals such as a rat named Templeton. After one restless night, he awoke and found a grey spider named Charlotte. Wilbur didn't like her appetite. After Wilbur got to know her, the oldest sheep said, " Wilbur, they're going to kill you at Christmas." When Wilbur panicked, he started sprinting around his pen. Charlotte was making a plan to save Wilbur's life by making them think he's special. She will put words like "some pig" in her web. This attracted tourists, and they were amazed. Lurvy, the ranch hand, read the web and was speechless, happy, and excited. Will Charlotte's plan work and save Wilbur's life? I recommend Charlotte's Web for every age. It was exciting.

Book Description

Since its original publication in 1987, Channels of Discourse has provided the most comprehensive consideration of commercial television, drawing on insights provided by the major strands of contemporary criticism: semiotics, narrative theory, reception theory, genre theory, ideological analysis, psychoanalysis, feminist criticism, and British cultural studies.

The second edition features a new introduction by Robert Allen that includes a discussion of the political economy of commercial television. Two new essays have been added—one an assessment of postmodernism and television, the other an analysis of convergence and divergence among the essays—and the original essays have been substantially revised and updated with an international audience in mind. Sixty-one new television stills illustrate the text.

Each essay lays out the general tenets of its particular approach, discusses television as an object of analysis within that critical framework, and provides extended examples of the types of analysis produced by that critical approach. Case studies range from Rescue 911 and Twin Peaks to soap operas, music videos, game shows, talk shows, and commericals.

Channels of Discourse, Reassembled suggests new ways of understanding relationships among television programs, between viewing pleasure and narrative structure, and between the world in front of the television set and that represented on the screen. The collection also addresses the qualities of popular television that traditional aesthetics and quantitative media research have failed to treat satisfactorily, including its seriality, mass production, and extraordinary popularity.

The contributors are Robert C. Allen, Jim Collins, Jane Feuer, John Fiske, Sandy Flitterman-Lewis, James Hay, E. Ann Kaplan, Sarah Kozloff, Ellen Seiter, and Mimi White.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview of Media Studies Methodologies.......2002-07-04

In a critical writing course I taught in Spring 2002, I used Channels of Discourse, Reassembled as the core text for the course readings. The many chapters within are written by the best of the best in the fields of media studies and cultural studies, and the methodologies are presented in an easy-to-read manner which is informative and full of examples and case studies. This is an excellent book for media studies students, as its chapters lay out the basic information they should know about many of the methodologies often used in media criticism.

5 out of 5 stars After you're done fooling around, come see me.......2007-09-22

If there is a higher and clearer channel of truth that I am able to grasp, I haven't experienced it yet, and I have been at this a very long time. After only one reading session I was stunned that I had not read Ramtha before. It seemed so completely improbable. I read so much of this kind of material and for so long. And I had heard of Ramtha, now and then, for many years. And then I thought; "this is what happens when you're done fooling around, isn't it, and you are done fooling around, aren't you". And then another stunner. I'm just about through with the first reading of this book, when I'm sent an email telling me that James Gilliland's 2nd book is finally available again. I had been waiting at least 4 years to be able to get it at a reasonable price, it wasn't important enough to me to pay a ridiculous price for it. It turns out this book is so uniquely and incredibly similar to The White Book that it was like a splash of cold water. It was as if it was coming from the same source, profoundly clear and unambiguous. This book is available now at eceti.org. And as I'm reading this long awaited book, here again, it's as if I'm hearing a voice saying; "after you're done fooling around, come see me".

5 out of 5 stars The truth of God.......2007-09-17

I read this book for the first time out of the library, I had to buy one for myself and for my sister. It's a phenomenal truth and an eye opener to whoever is ready for this kind of reading. I was also very happy with how fast and reliable amazon books is.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating information about the questionable aspects of life.......2007-09-16

This is a channeled book by an entity that lived some thousands of years ago. The information is highly interesting. Subjects covered have to do with questionable aspects of life, death, reincarnation, God, love, etc. I can see where people would be skeptical of the information contained in this book. It's exceptionally different from what most of us have grown up learning about life and the world we live in. At times, it's hard to imagine that some of the ideas here are true. I think there is much truth to this though.

I have read numerous books in the new thought/new age realm and a lot of the more recent books have the same principles/ideas that are presented here. This is similar to 'The Secret' except way better, with loads more information and twenty years earlier. (The Secret used a variety of sources while this is channeled info from one entity) While reading through this, there were several places when I was reminded of other books I've read like ACIM.(A course In Miracles) I also thought of Gary Renard's Disappearance of the Universe and Your Immortal Reality and Richard Bach's Illusions. On the subjects of the seven dimensions made me think of Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time.

I do remember when I read Gary Renard's 'Disappearance..' it was hard for me to imagine it as true because it starkly contrasted with the ways I had been taught. So, reading this now, wasn't such a shock and I don't think the ideas are that far-out. There are some ideas here are still hard for me to fully wrap my mind around. That doesn't mean that it isn't or can't be true though. Who really knows for sure? Reading this has enhanced what I've already learned from other more recent sources and has opened my mind to even more possibilities.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing.......2007-09-01

With paragraphs that feel like they are pulling on heart.Ramtha gave me the awakening that i'd been looking for putting the truth in such a way that you can not live in denial anymore. Some parts were difficult to get through, but whatever you do don't give up.

5 out of 5 stars Once is not enough, but not for everyone.......2007-06-30

As a seeker on the 'path' for almost 25 years, I have been exposed to just about every guru and philosophy of the new age, many of them personally. I have met a man who was raised from the dead by Sai Baba, and I have been worked on by a psychic surgeon. In other words, I have been around the block and have nothing negative to say about any of them.

I am writing this because I simply have not read anything like the white book. When I found David Hawkins' Power vs Force, It was the first book that I ever started rereading immediately as soon as I finished the last page. With the White Book, I am now on my fourth reading, and I am still savoring every paragraph. It took a week to begin the first reread, because I knew something was happening to me, and it was very good. Just a couple of pages a day, and my soul is singing.

The best way to describe this book is that when I attempted to read sections of this book to my spiritual peers, they, in spite of their best efforts, almost immediately fell asleep. For serious seekers, we have all had the experience of being in energy that was so high that we were unable to stay awake. For me, the first time I read the white book, I realized, when I perused it later, that I had no recall of at least 3/4 of the content. As a long time member of mensa, when this happens, I take note. I had borrowed it from a library, and I realized I had trouble taking it back.

I have met several people who read the white book years ago, some still students of Ramtha, and when I remind them to read it again, they are absolutely blown away. I have never seen Ramtha, and I really have no interest in seeing him, other than as a tourist. It is not what a teaching says, it is what it does that has value to me. The white book feeds me. If this is not your book, I hope that you find one that does for you what this book does for me. Words fail to communicate what this book is about, so when you read this review observe how you feel.

Updated to include all the recent developments to the PC and complete with a CD-ROM, the third edition of How Computers Work is like a cool science museum in a book. But make no mistake--this is not a book for children. How Computers Work aims to teach readers about all the intricacies held within the machine, and it's a daunting task. The author, Ron White, doesn't dumb down his material; instead he provides thorough and substantive definitions. The pages of fun and colorful graphics ease the tension, though, and bring the abstract concepts--the difference between RAM and ROM, for example--into real life.

The book has incredible depth, explaining everything you could want to know about your computer, with each piece of hardware being given full treatment over two to five pages. (Macintosh and UNIX users should be aware, though, that the book's model is the "Wintel," a Windows PC with an Intel microprocessor.) The book is well-structured and can easily be used as a reference resource beyond the first reading. --Jennifer Buckendorff

This book is really easy to understand and will leave you with a good understanding of the computer. Not only does it explain computers but other things you might be interested in are brought into the light too. For example, TiVo, MP3 players, printers, and monitors are in this book with detailed pictures and descriptions just like with the computer section. This book is a must buy for anyone with curiosity about computers or their cousins.

This should be mandatory reading, required (like a drivers license) for ANYONE who buys a computer or is hired to do even data entry!!! I tell everyone I meet who complains they 'don't know that much about their computer'... BUY THIS BOOK! And so should YOU! I used to carry the title and ISBN with me to share with folks (really! and I may do so again after writing this review!) If you want to punch the cute little buttons... read this book FIRST.

Although he lacks a voice in the traditional "Ko-hoh!" sense, trumpeter swan Louis learns to speak to the world with a trumpet stolen from a music store by his father. With the support of an unusual boy named Sam, who helps Louis learn how to read and write, the swan has some rather unswanlike adventures and ultimately wins the love--and the freedom--of a beautiful swan named Serena.

For over 30 years, E.B. White's masterpiece has captured the fancy of countless readers. Now, with stunning new art by award-winning illustrator Fred Marcellino, the beloved story can be experienced anew. The sepia-colored drawings lend an old-fashioned charm to the story--it's almost as if, with their complementary dry wit and uniquely creative talents, White and Marcellino originally worked together. Marcellino received the Caldecott Honor for his illustrations in Charles Perrault's Puss in Boots. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Swan Song

Like the rest of his family, Louis is a trumpeter swan. But unlike his four brothers and sisters, Louis can't trumpet joyfully. In fact, he can't even make a sound. And since he can't trumpet his love, the beautiful swan Serena pays absolutely no attention to him.

Louis tries everything he can think of to win Serena's affection -- he even goes to school to learn to read and write. But nothing seems to work. Then his father steals him a real brass trumpet. Is a musical instrument the key to winning Louis his love?

3 out of 5 stars Swan Reveiw.......2007-02-23

I say a person who likes adventure books would like to read The Trumpet of the Swam. They should read this book because it is pretty much a total adventure. There are other types of readers who would enjoy this book but, adventure is the main type. The protagonist(Louis)seems very sad that he can't talk but, he is capable of doing other things without his voice. The antagonist(Louis' father)feels bad for Louis and his condition. Although, when the father steals a brass trumpet he gets Louis in a mess of trouble. My thoughts about The Trumpet of the Swan are that the adventures Louis had repeated sometimes. He always tried to get money to pay back the stolen trumpet. The book got boring at times.

5 out of 5 stars Another family favorite.......2007-02-15

The Trumpet of the Swan turned out to be another big hit for my family and I to share together. You know you have a big hit with my kids when they will do whatever you ask of them just so you will sit there and read the next chapter!!

TOTS is told from a number of different perspectives. It starts off from the perspective of Sam Beaver, a young boy from Montana on vacation with his father in the Canadian Wilderness. Sam is an introspective young man. He likes to explore and think by himself, he worries about his future, and he keeps a journal where he asks himself questions to ponder every night before he goes to sleep. My 8-year-old Noah was quite taken with that idea and I am getting a journal book of his own to write down his thoughts and make little pictures to keep. Sam is also brave and patient. His patience pays off when one day the Mother Swan and her Cob allow their new cygnets to meet him. And that is how Sam meets Lois, the little swan without a voice. In a very tender moment little Lois, who has no voice, pulls Sam's shoe lace as a way to say hello. The imagination of my young sons were so inspired with what it would take to have a wild bird like Lois come that close to them. We can't even get the stray cats in our neighborhood to stand still long enough for a pat on the head!!

The Cob and his wife have come to Canada for the purpose of raising a family. The first couple of chapters are dedicated to the challenges of building a nest and hatching the young cygnets. This is my favorite part of the book! The cob, is a master orator! He never says in anything in 5 words when 50 will do much better! He is arrogant, verbose, flamboyant and charming. He cracked us all up more than once!

But the central character in the book is Lois the swan, a trumpeter swan without a voice! As it turns out this is a major birth defect for this young swan if he ever hopes to communicate with his fellow swans, but particularly if he ever hopes to woo and court a female trumpeter swan. Lois sets out on his own to learn how to communicate and with the help of Sam Beaver, he learns to read and write! With his trusty chalkboard and pencil he certainly can communicate with people. But swans cannot read. My children were mortified at the illustration of Lois swimming around with the sign saying "I love you" trying to woo the swan of his dreams, Serena. Love even makes swans surrender some of their dignity I guess.

Thanks to bold and brave actions by the cob, Lois does get a voice through a regular musical trumpet! This series of events sets on on a path that leads him to Ontario, Boston, Philadelphia and then eventually through the American South and
then back up to Montana.

For geography, tracking Lois's adventures on the map and learning about each of these places can make for interesting lessons. [...]

The Trumpet of the Swan is a family story, a love story, and adventure story, and a comedy. I highly recommend it for the entire family!

A book with nearly everything going for it...animals, young people, science, fantasy, humor and a love story.....and written by one of the great authors of the 20th century. Lewis, the trumpeter swan without a voice, is very real to the reader, certainly this reader. It is a joy for adults, young and old.

This is a book I read once a year, and one I delight in giving as a gift.
