Great for beginners to intermediate!.......2006-01-07
This book was used as a text book in a stage management class I took last quarter. I was well versed in theater before taking the class, but not from a stage management point of view. This book helps explain everything from simple terms to more advanced backstage lingo. Also, the author gives great explanations of how to block scenes, call cues, make transitions from the rehearsal space to the performace space, making the actors feel at home, and more. It was one interesting text book!
A Must Read For Those Entering the Theatre.......2001-01-19
I found this book to be extremely helpful when teaching churches how to adapt theatrical techniques to the church setting. It is also a unique handbook that breaks down the lingo and explains the need for a stage manager in a show. As a professional, I find it valuable to recommend to those who have never been in theatre or those learning to become a stage manager. Everything is concise and to the point without talking down to people. I highly recommend this book.
Highly recommended.......2000-02-13
I found this book to be full of wonderful ideas (too bad I had already learned most of them the hard way :-). This is a wonderful reference for the professional stage manager but can also be easily adapted for community or college theatre as well.
Good Starter Book.......2000-01-16
The Stage Managment Handbook is a great book for those who are new to the stage managment scene. However, those experienced in stage managment will probably not find this book very informative. So... if you're new and looking for a place to start, I wholeheartedly reccomend this book. If you are a backstage vet, then spend your money on something more advanced.
A great reference book!.......1998-11-29
I keep buying this book for friends who want to make Stage Management their career. It has great pointers, forms, glossaries and a complete look at what you are getting yourself into when you agree to stage manage even a community theatre production. It is cheaper than the Lawrence Stern book, which is also an EXCELLENT book.
Book Description
Stage Rigging Handbook is written in an at-a-glance outline form, yet contains in-depth information available nowhere else.
This second edition includes two new parts: the first, an expanded discussion of the forces and loads on stage rigging components and the structure supporting them; the second, an examination of block and tackle rigging. The remaining four parts contain numerous revisions.
Explaining his purpose, Jay O. Glerum points out that four main principles constitute the core of this book: know the rigging system; know that it is in safe working order; know how to use it; keep your concentration. Glerum applies these principles to all the major types of stage rigging systems, including block and tackle, hemp, counterweight, and motorized. He describes each type of rigging and then thoroughly reviews the operating procedures and ways of inspecting existing systems.
To provide background, Glerum opens with the basic theory of applied physics as it relates to rigging. Step by step, he explains the calculations required to determine safe working loads for various components. Glerum’s many anecdotes help the reader translate theory into reality.
Glerum then turns to four separate and detailed treatments of the main types of theatrical rigging. His thorough descriptions include drawings that identify each separate component of the rigging. He points out the advantages of each system, detailing everything from the mechanical advantage and the effects of wear on rope to the best ways to tie off the pin rail and to store weights. Because stagecraft often has been handed down orally from one stagehand to the next, incorrect—as well as dangerous—assumptions exist in the trade. Glerum provides a ready reference for everything from how to tie a knot to how to effectively communicate a warning for a runaway set.
Glerum also discusses special problems such as cutting fiber rope, terminating wire rope, attaching drops and framed scenery, using trusses and bridles, dead hanging, tripping, guiding loads, and other topics. He also covers recordkeeping, with tips and pointers on how to establish an inspection log.

Outdated.......2005-08-02
This book must have been the rigging bible...in 1970. There is very little mention of motorized rigging and modern trussing used in the majority of stage, concert and corporate events. I would strongly recommend NOT buying this book unless you're looking for a historical document of how rigging was performed 35 years ago.
A Must Read For High School Techies!.......2002-09-03
Stage Rigging Hand Book is a great book for anyone responsible for rigging. It covers very important topics and safety issues. Working in one of the biggest and best high school theatres in the state of Virginia, I can say that this book is a major help on any rigging job and is an indispensable book when safety is concerned (and when is safety not involved?). If you are a TD at any high school with a rigging system you must have this book.
Nothing Better.......2002-06-24
As an instructor in the Canadian College system, I have found this book best sits within easy reach. I am constantly using it as a teaching tool for my students and myself. I had the priviledge of attending a master class with Jay in 2001 and would recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity. When teamed with Harry Donovan, you will find no better pair to flood your mind with all that is entertainment rigging.
An Amazing Book.......2001-08-19
Jay O. Glerum has written a book filled with history and practical hard-to-find information every theatre tech should have in his/her library. This book is rich with clear illustrations and photos for just about every rigging situation you will encounter. It has chapters on "Loads and Reactions" "Block and Tackle Rigging" "Hemp Rigging" "Motorized Rigging" and much more. There's a very useful chapter on cutting and knotting rope. I was particularly impressed with the sections on "Special Problems" and "Recordkeeping". As today's threatres move more and more toward mechanized scene changes and motorized light rigs, a solid understanding of rigging techniques is more important than ever. Whether you are a novice or have years of experience ... whether you are an independent or on staff, Jay O. Glerum's "Stage Rigging Handbook" will improve your knowledge and give you a wealth of information. I highly recommend this book.
A Must for any Flyrail!.......2000-12-27
As an IATSE stage rigger, I have worked with people like Eddie Blue and Aaron Hutsch, and I have yet to work with a flyman or rigger who doesn't use and own this book. Glerum's methodical approach to everything rigged, from sand bags and tension pulleys to loft blocks and chain bags makes the complicated art and physics involved with theatrical flying and baton loading easy to understand, and in-depth enough for the novice or master rigger. A must have for anyone persuing a theatrical or IATSE position.

Two Thumbs Up From The Magazine To Inspire Conscious Parenting & Empowered Kids.......2007-04-01
I picked up the book yesterday and couldn't put it down. As publisher of a magazine to inspire conscious parenting and empowered kids, this book reminded me of the importance of helping kids settle down, breath, and connect to the world (and people) around them. It's full practical steps to apply in everyday life but what keeps the pages turning are the personal stories she relates. Some ideas we've heard over and over, such as using breath, movement or touch to soothe, but they serve as great reminders to put them back into our lives. Others are innovative, fun, and simple, such as giving your toddler two nickels to hold on to (one for each hand) to distract them while making a quick stop. Without giving too much away, the book offered a reminder that the way things are isn't necesarily the way they have to be. It IS possible for four 10-year-old boys to be kind, compassionate and gentle with a 4-year-old boy who interrupts their game. Empathy is essential for two humans to connect and understand one another. Empathy is what is lacking within families and in world politics. We started our magazine because we know that it is children who determine the future of the world. With conscious parenting and the ideas presented in this book, our kids have a hope for a more peaceful personal life and world situation.
A childrens book that speaks from the heart.......2007-03-21
With practical activities for children, this is more than just a book to be read. The stories and anecdotes are based are true experiences, and give insight to the author's own experiences with the many children she has helped to develop. Bringing kindness and calmness back into or children's life's is truly needed in today's highly stressed world.
A must read for anybody interested in the emotional state of children!.......2007-03-15
I highly recommend Calm and Compassionate Children for parents, educators, and anybody interested in the emotional state of children! As a parent and child therapist, I found the content very helpful in raising my own mindfulness of the negative influences on children, and more importantly in offering hands on suggestions for placing more healthy and positive influences on childrens' spirits. Through music, literature, nature, and other modalities the author does a great job showing how to help children achieve compassion, balance, calm, inner contentment, and many other vitues that make for a joyful person. The author also shares personal stories from her experience as a teacher and parent which make the reading even more enjoyable!
Real suggestions for real parents and real teachers!.......2007-02-27
I love the way this book addresses what children already possess - open hearts and natural wonder, and shows us how to nurture those qualities so children don't "grow out" of them. These are not ethereal ideas that disappear in the light of reality, they really work at home and in the classroom. I have my own children and work with children in a variety of settings and have tried many of the suggestions in this book - they are based on truth and experience, and they work. We don't have to accept the common opinion that kids today are hyperactive, thoughtless and selfish. Children of all ages have enormous capacity for caring if we are willing to give them the opportunities they need to experience the possibilities. Recommended for all adults who share their lives with children.
A joyous child is possible!!.......2007-02-27
Susan's beautiful new book arrives to our communities during a time of pressing need for a positive new vision for our children. Her gifts to the reader are many and deep. Susan provides a clear presentation of what our children can accomplish in life and she gives us - parents, teachers, friends, administrators, healers, spiritual leaders - many helpful & easy tips and steps to take. This book is like a calm lake that nourishes us and holds our lives during chaotic and confusing time. Susan teaches us to swim anew and we in turn can teach and support our children with compassion, clarity, intelligence and joy. Thank you Susan!
Book Description
Succinct and jargon free, Stage Rigging Handbook remains the only book in any language that covers the design, operation, and maintenance of stage-rigging equipment. It is written in an at-a-glance outline form, yet contains in-depth information available nowhere else. This fully indexed third edition includes three new parts: the first, an explanation of inspection procedures for rigging systems; the second, a discussion of training in the operation of rigging systems; and the third, essential information about the operation of fire curtains. The remaining six parts, as well as the glossary and bibliography, have been updated. This edition also contains a new preface, many new illustrations, and expanded information on Nicopress terminations.
Glerum explains that four main principles make up the core of this book: know the rigging system; keep it in safe working order; know how to use it; and keep your concentration. Glerum applies these principles to all of the major types of stage rigging systems, including block and tackle, hemp, counterweight, and motorized. He describes each type of rigging, then thoroughly reviews the operating procedures and methods of inspecting existing systems.

Kirsch makes publishing law easy to understand........2003-07-15
Jonathan Kirsch is an interesting combination: he is both a novelist and an attorney. He puts both skills to use in this book by creating an interesting, easy-to-read, easy-to-understand dissertation on all aspects of publishing law. The book is highly recommended for both authors and publishers.
After a three-chapter introduction of some basic publishing law concepts, he spends almost 80 pages in chapter four going over the book publishing contract clause by clause. He examines the legal implications of each clause, the profit/loss implications for both the author and the publisher, as well as typical practices throughout the industry. Every author and every publisher should read this chapter twice!
Chapter five examines defamation and privacy issues that every author and publisher should know before they write or publish a book. Can you risk not knowing this?
After that he examines copyright, subsidiary rights, and trademark issues in detail-essential information for publishers.
A well-read copy of this book belongs on the shelf of every publisher and author.

An Essential Tool for the New and Growing Writer.......2003-02-04
Are you about to finish writing a book? Are you an editor, agent, publisher, or even rookie lawyer in publishing? If so, or even if you are considering publishing something- anything, really- than this book is an essential tool/workbook in navigating the potentially dangerous/potentially treasure-filled waters of the printed word industry. Do not sign any book contract- no matter how good it 'sounds'- without first reading this book. Do not quote another source in your material without understanding the possible copyright consequences as explained in this book. Do not sign on with an agent or collaborator without first studying this book. I have seen too many musicians get screwed in boilerplate recording contracts and now that I have moved into writing I am very thankful that I have found and read this book- as I do not want to be the next victim of the 'small print' of a powerful publisher or by a indemnity lawsuit due to any negligence on my part.
What Kirsch does in this publication is go through a book contract step-by-step, clause-by-clause, he 'reads between the lines' for us, he dissects the main deal points in a negotiation and summarizes the critical areas to pay attention to; he hems out publishing law as it applies to writing your book, selling your story to a publisher, and reaping your rewards without incurring a hefty lawsuit. This book is very-well formatted in a visual sense, is user-friendly, even for the publishing law novice, yet it teaches its concepts at a fairly advanced level. What more could you want?
Very Helpful.......2001-02-16
Read this before you sign your first book contract. I'm glad I did. I made this material my crash course and it paid off. - DaveDavidson.com - author
an invaluable resource for anyone in the publishing industry.......1998-10-18
Not only has this book saved me much time and money in research and legal fees, but the author makes the information accessible by offering myriad examples to back up his sage advice. I keep three books on my desk: the dictionary, the Chicago Manual of Style, and Kirsch's Handbook of Publishing Law. A classic.
Book Description
Many of today's high-net-worth investors are turning their attention to early-stage investing in emerging companies. They know just how successful and lucrative funding a start-up venture can be. Savvy angel investors can foresee distant but potentially huge returns from pre-IPO companies. There are scores of hungry entrepreneurs in search of capital and lots of money to be invested. But, matching the right entrepreneurs with wise investors, so that both can profit, is the challenge in new enterprises.
Gerald Benjamin and Joel Margulis demonstrate that the real pitfall for potential investors is an incomplete understanding of the complexities of early-stage investing. At the same time, the angel capital market offers few mechanisms for bringing investors and entrepreneurs together, while securities regulations restrict communication between sophisticated investors and promising new businesses.
So, where do the uninitiated start, and how do they separate the wheat from the chaff? In this ground breaking work, Benjamin and Margulis offer angel investors a hands-on manual for profiting from early-stage, private equity deals. They show how to develop investment criteria and overall game plans, locate viable investment opportunities, assess and manage risks, negotiate the most favorable deal terms, conduct thorough due diligence, and plan the all-important exit strategy.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable information, but repetitive at times.......2005-08-28
The book contains a lot of very valuable information. It is geared primarily towards the investor who wants to explore angel investing, i.e. private investmentment in early-stage enterprises. The book does a good job in explaining the risks, necessary time commitment and potential benefits of angel investing. Thankfully, it is not of the 'how to get rich easy' kind. On the negative side, the book repeats some of its points ad nauseam and is not a stylistic masterwork.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-07-24
Gerald A. Benjamin and Joel Margulis tell the current or prospective angel or early-stage investor how to best judge pre-IPO investments. They emphasize matching investors with the right entrepreneurs to create an effective team in which the investor not only provides the seed or early-stage capital but also contributes good advice and contacts. Besides discussing effective strategies, the book includes an extensive directory of top venture forums, angel organizations, publications and Web sites. In addition, any investor will benefit from the thorough rundown of due-diligence points that the authors recommend. While the book is targeted at prospective investors, we [...] encourage entrepreneurs with start-up companies to use it as a productive guide to making more effective funding pitches, although the companion book for entrepreneurs would probably be more helpful. One caveat: Some ideas are repeated - even with similar wording - from chapter to chapter. But overall this is a solid book, even though the free flows of money it evokes have been arrested somewhat lately.

A wonderful book for aspiring stage managers.......2002-10-10
I hope to be a Technical Theatre major when I get into college (I am a senior in high school at the moment), and I found a copy of this book at my county library. I read it over and over! I finally bought a copy of my own, which I use as a 'bible' of sorts. When I do stage management for some of my school's productions I always tote this book around as a reference tool. I recommend this book highly; it gives great insight into all aspects of the stage manager's duties. It is also a good read!

A very basic primer.......2007-06-16
I wish I could have searched inside this book before purchasing. In this book you will get the most basic information needed to make the move. The author also sites contributors with questionable backgrounds regarding children.
I would easily recommend passing on this book.
Great Resource!.......2005-04-20
If you're a parent and have a child who wants to be in "the biz", then this is the book for you. We don't live in LA and were desperate for information that could help us understand the industry and make good choices. This book has been a tremendous asset that we consult quite often. Everyone knows the saying that "you don't know what you don't know." Thanks to this book, we are now "in the know" about how to best help our son pursue his Hollywood dream. Thanks Troy!

Book Description
How might Katherine's final speech be staged in the twenty-first century? How might it have been staged in the sixteenth? Must this speech be played for irony, or should we understand her words as sincere? This Handbook foregrounds performance and history as interpretative issues, introducing students to a process of creative imaginative thought. It offers skills and materials with which to explore the variety of ways in which Shakespeare's "troubling comedy" or "light tragedy" might take on meaning today.
