Awesome Book for the avid baseball fan!.......2007-09-26
This book is great for the avid baseball fan. I bought it for myself, but I am going to buy one for a friend for Christmas because I am so impressed with it. I like the baseball diamond shape, makes it interesting, great coffee table book and it a great conversation piece. Even the NON-baseball fans love it! Great information on the new and old ballparks.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame.......2007-01-03
I was disappointed to discover that this was an older edition and not the new one, which I have purchased for others. It lacks the updates of the currebt edition. I suppose its one way to get rid of old merchandise.
baseball parks.......2006-12-19
Take me out to the ballpark by Josh Leventhal is a very exciting book because it shows you baseball's old stadiums. For instance, the Brooklyn Dodgers Stadium. The book shows you how many stadiums there are. I used to think there were only 30 stadiums, but this book gives information on more than 100 major and minor league stadiums around the country.
The book shows some very unique stadiums. Some have roofs, some do not and some are football stadiums like Minnesota's stadium. My favorite part of the book is when they show you the old Yankee Stadium. I think a baseball fan should read this book.

Take Me Out to the Ballpark: An Illustrated Tour to Baseball Parks.......2005-08-03
I first purchased this for my baseball-fan grown sons. My mother (also a fan) was enthralled by it, so I bought one for her, too. It has lots of information, great photos - all-in-all, a successful gift for the baseball-lover.
One of the best.......2004-12-10
This book on baseball parks was incredibly good. I personally am very interested in baseball parks and so I have high expectations for a book like this. The information was given in an easy-to-read way that made reading it enjoyable and not a chore. There were lots of facts and the pictures were perfect. The only problem was the shape... I don't get it is it a baseball or what? Other than that this is one of the best baseball books there is and I should know because I love baseball.

Take the kids to poetry.......2007-09-15
I'm a teacher, and this book was a huge hit with my students during a reading clinic I helped teach. One boy declared that he didn't like rhyme before I introduced the book and really got into it after I had him read it anyway...he even performed one of the poems for the class!!!
poetry.......2007-07-12
This is great book to introduce poetry. If your students are reluctant poetry readers, this is the book for you! There is also a sequel!
Book - Take Me Out of the Bathtub.......2007-01-16
This is a book of silly song lyrics that sung to old well-known tunes. The title song is sung to the tune of Take Me Out to the Ball Game. I have purchased 3 copies of it so far: for my 2 year-old stepgrandaughter, my 4 month-old great nephew and my daughter and son-in-law and their little 15-month old niece.
It's such a fun thing - getting reacquainted with the old tunes and singing such silly lyrics. The illustrations are wonderful too.
Silly Songs.......2006-11-10
My kids like the silly rhymes set to familiar tunes, especially the title song. Only complaint is that some of the melodies aren't all that familiar and we're going to have to find the music to be able to sing them.
L Kurtz.......2006-10-16
I am giving this book only three stars because it's low on my daughter's list of books she goes to on regular basis. I think firstly, the images are a bit on the gross side (and I have an art degree & can appreciate the style). Some are just not pleasant to look at even though they probably describe the poem well (poems about a stinky diaper; having a food fight; cleaning your room; falling on your untied shoelaces). And secondly, the only poem that's fun to read is the first one about being in the tub too long. That one is fun to read, but the rest are a B-. Some may really enjoy these poems, but I was disapointed with the purchase of this one.
Book Description
Booklist : Marcus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, was granted full access to students, parents, and staff at a therapeutic boarding school in western Massachusetts. The result is an astonishing profile of troubled teens: foulmouthed and truant Bianca; D. J., on the brink of failing and fascinated with fire; disengaged and depressed Tyrone, from the housing projects in Queens; and Mary Alice, drug addicted and sexually promiscuous. Through his focus on particular teens and their families, Marcus highlights the complexities of modern adolescence--studies show that one in four youths suffers from some kind of behavioral or emotional problem, including higher rates of suicide, depression, and delinquency. Marcus details the backgrounds, family lives, and personalities of the teens and their struggles with anger and pressure at home and at school. He then tracks their therapy and the slow, painful healing process. The teens build trust with their counselors and among themselves and finally rebuild their relationships with their families. This is a revealing and engrossing look at the recovery process for troubled teens.
Customer Reviews:
If you're a parent worried about your teen, read this book.......2007-09-02
Although my children are grown, I'm still interested in learning about adolescence in this country, not the least because we now have four grandchildren. This book chronicles 14 months in a "therapeutic" school for "troubled" teenagers. It sheds a lot of light not only on how these types of school work with kids, but on the young people themselves, as well, of course, as their families. I am always taken by books that fairly portrays all sides of an issue. This book does this extremely well. While the therapeutic school in question is a profit making one, the teachers and some administrators are passionate in their desire to help the students. Unfortunately, as this is real life, while most kids seem to improve, not all do, and even among those who do, the "outcome" is not necessarily what the parents would hope. Sometimes there are truly miraculous "recoveries" and if I were a parent at the point of sending my child to this type of an institution, I could do nothing, but hold our hope that my child would be one of those. At the end of the book, the author outlines the key questions to which he sought the answers through writing the book. He addresses what he learned and can pass on to other parents through his writing. He also lists the warning signs the parents of the Swift River students he wrote about realized their kids had displayed by eighth or ninth grade. These are things that every parent should open his or her eyes to if they wish to help their kids sooner rather than later. (pg 314 of the hardcover edition).
Missed the point.......2007-03-26
This book didn't work for me. It didn't really have any workable suggestions. Just so-so.
Riveting and Helpful.......2007-01-12
If you have a troubled teen, this is a book you won't be able to put down. If you are thinking of sending your teen away for help, this book will give you lots of things to consider. If you'd just like some ideas on how to better relate to and maybe help your teen, there are endless ideas in here.
A real look into the minds of some troubled teens.......2006-11-23
From my standpoint, this book was not written to be an expose on therapeutic schools. It was not written to tell you what the staff/parents/etc could have done to have better results. It was not written to tell you how to fix your teen. Simply, it is a glimpse into the lives of some trouble teens that were sent to the same place at the same moment in time. And with that in mind - the author produce a moving and real portrayal of his observations.
As a parent, I found this book to be memorizing. Not only when I look at my teenager, but also when I remember my tremulous teenage years. Marcus manages to capture the heart of these kids and their individual struggles.
He does not offer solutions, but rather (and more accurately IMHO) states that sometimes there are no right and wrong answers. That raising kids does not always boil down to the latest research and/or ideology on parenting. In the end, teens must choose their destiny and quite blaming everything on everyone else. Only then, do they have a chance to overcome the multitude of challenges that one must face in our society.
Excellent book. I can not recommend it highly enough.
does not ask any questions.......2006-11-04
While this book comes across as a warts and all look at one of the big players in the teen help industry it fails to ask some really fundamental questions.
What would have been a less harsh and equally effectvie solution for jerome, the boy who had never touched an illicit drug and who only needed greater attention academically to thrive? Why was his mother not encouraged to look at the alternative school that he ended up at first? Is there a potential danger in putting a naive and socially struggling kid from the suburbs in a place with world weary drug taking sophisticates? Would it be culturally appropriate for a hispanic girl with devout catholic beliefs to have to confess her sexual sins publically?
This book also presents the kids relapses as an unfortunate accident without extensively delving into why. It strikes me that Trevor, the witty and easygoing Englishman never really learnt how to survive outside of the highly artificial world of ASR. Perhaps this was because it did not give him the self worth to refuse to engage in behaviours extreme enough to be lifethreatening or the practical tools to say no to a very real and strong temptation.
And what of the staff? Only one line was devoted to the fact that the enthusiastic English teacher left claiming the only thing she loved about the place was the kids. Why was this so?
And whhat is the effect of such a high turnover of staff on vulnerable troubled young people? DJ the ADD adoptee began a down hill slide when his favourite PE teacher Big Mike abruptly left.
Finally it does not question at all the morality of the programme. Actively punishing harrdworking kids such as Jerome for not turning in their friends when they confide in each other does not teach loyalty or strengthen friendship. It comes across as meanspirited and unjust. Does any school have the moral right to tell a mother what she should or should not put in a letter to her child?
While this book is quite clear about what goes on at a therapudic boarding school it asks no questions at all about the controversial aspects of the industry and presents it as without controversy

Book Description
“A funny and troubling look at athletes and identity . . . Take Me Out is a dynamic, involving play.” —Donald Lyons, New York Post
Darren Lemming is the star center fielder for the champion New York Empires. An extraordinary athlete, he fills both his fans and his teammates with awe at his abilities and his presence on the field and off. When he makes the matter-of-fact announcement that he’s gay, he throws his team into turmoil and confusion, while he also emboldens his closeted accountant, Mason Marzac, to come to terms with his own sexuality—and to fully experience the pure joy of watching great athletes play a sport as well as it can be played. But Darren’s announcement brings to the fore the confused and twisted hostilities of the Empires’ brilliantly talented but deeply racist and homophobic pitcher, Shane Mungitt—from whose rage tragic consequences ensue.
The American premiere of Take Me Out took place at the Public Theater in New York City in September 2002. It will move to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway in February 2003.

Attention, Please, Gay Jewish Baseball Fanatics!.......2007-07-03
Greenberg is an intriguing playwright, erudite, bright, urbane, witty...the superlatives go on and on. I have been a fan for years. He is unpredictable and worthy of our sustained attention. I didn't like this play, but I have loved others by him and you will, too. This play has one terrific virtue: it celebrates baseball, but more importantly, it celebrates the baseball convert. It is crucially about the intellectual guy, the nerd, the sissy, whatever, who comes to baseball late in life, who doesn't know the rules, the players, the history, the mythology, the anti-sports snob type who gets turned on and falls in love with baseball. It's nice. Very well done, very well said. It happens after all, and I can't think of anyone else who has touched it. The naked baseball players in the shower is pure vaudeville, pure Las Vegas, pure exploitation. I suppose Greenberg let his handlers at the Public Theater get to him; no doubt their craven greed pointed in this direction. As a result, we have here a Chorus Line type entertainment masquerading as a play. Well, everybody has to pay the rent. No doubt this has served as a meal ticket for all involved, but don't let them fool you into thinking this is a drama.
GREAT.......2006-12-31
I normaly don't like sports and try to dtray away from sport books. But this cought my eye, it spunded so inturesting, i had to read it. I instantly fell in love with it. it is very belivable and i love all the characters, including Shane Mungitt. I could see his point of view on the whole situation and how scared and confused he is. But my all time favorite character was Mason Marzac's character. He was what made me see baseball in a diffrent light. U still don't like basball, but it made me think for a minute, which was good. You don't have to know baseball to read this, whice is always a good thing. All in all a very good show. HBO shout turn this into a movie, I would watch it.
Greenbergs Baseball Fantasy?.......2006-03-22
Richard Greenberg's play is adventurous and thoughtful. The play begins after an outing and continues to take you on an unexpected journey. This play is a great read and I am sure even more exciting in person.
A Play about Homosexuality and Baseball.......2006-02-06
Darren Lemming, the star player for the New York Empires, matter-of-factly announces that he's gay during a post-game interview. Told by his teammate Kippy Sunderstrom, the play follows the days, weeks and months after the announcement and the effect it has on the Empires. The team seems to take it. No arguments; no in-fighting between Darren, the management or any players; life proceeds as normal. Until a racist and homophobic pitcher -- Shane Mungitt -- is brought up from the minor leagues, and his interactions with Darren lead to tragic consequences.
I think playwrite Richard Greenberg tried to meld two stories into one: a love for baseball as America's game and being openly gay in a overly macho place. I briefly understood the love for the game through the character of Mason Marzac, Dennis' gay business manager, but barely caught a glimpse of how tough it is to be gay in such an environment. The team doesn't seem to have a problem with Darren's homosexuality; that strikes me as odd. Only one person from the team has a problem with him in the showers, but nothing ever really comes of it. His best friend Davey Battle does have a problem with it, but he's a stereotyped Christian who finds Darren's sexaulity ugly. The character of Shane Mungitt is stereotyped, as well, made to be a dumb and idiotic redneck, and no one from the team will even speak to him when he joins the team. Darren Lemming is overly arrogant and unlikable, and through an unprovoked action on his part, causes Shane to commit his tragedy.
As a gay man, I couldn't get into the play or the characters -- all of which seemed very two-dimensional. Maybe it translates better on the stage, but in book form, I did not enjoy it.
Excellent Play!.......2005-10-12
I participated in the cast of this play last July 2005. One of the best experiences I have ever had doing theater.
The play is excellent. In general, I think the play is sad. The lives of the characters take a drastic turn when Darren Lemming, a baseball superstar, announces publicly that he is gay.
Take Me Out is a play about self acceptance, prejudice, taboos, homophobia, racism, hate crime. Raw and honest, it exposes many things that have been known for a long time but that everybody prefers to keep to themselves.

Great song book for wide age levels.......2001-11-29
I thoought the Horn Book review was rough on this delightful picture book. My children have loved it from toddlerhood-- especially because we can "sing" our way through it (and sing over and over if the page turning pace is fast, slow, etc-- it doesn't matter). There is plenty of detail and nostalgia in the careful illustrations-- also a hit with Nana! And it depicts black and white fans side by side, with nods to Jackie Robinson. The end notes are fascinating too. Enjoy!
The illustrations really make the song come to life........1999-09-22
The illustrations is this book are so good that they made me love baseball even more than before. My 2 year old sings the song all of the time now. I wanted to buy the hard cover version after checking it out of the library, but I can't since it's out of print.
Book Description
In this rendering of the beloved song Take Me Out to the Ballgame, Jim Burke captures an exciting era of America's favorite pastime - as well as the incredible story of one controversial contest that went down in the history books: In 1908, the year the anthem was written, one of the all-time most memorable match-ups in baseball history occurred when the New York Giants faced the reigning World Series champion Chicago Cubs with their greatest weapon - Christy Mathewson, the greatest pitcher in Giants history and America's first true sports superstar.Filled with fan-pleasing trivia and nostalgic paintings, here is a remarkable orchestration that brings the sights, sounds and smells of the ballpark, a century ago, vividly to life.
Customer Reviews:
This is great!.......2006-03-18
Occasionally a children's book is more than a children's book and that is the case with the sensational baseball song, Take Me Out to the Ball Game. The lyrics are by Jack Norworth and the illustrations are by Jim Burke.
Take Me Out to the Ball Game is a tribute to the game of baseball. In New York City, 1908, entertainer Jack Norworth had never seen a baseball game. But riding the elevated subway overlooking the Giants' field, he found himself inspired and jotted the lyrics to the great American song "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." Later composer Albert Von Tilzer created the melody for the hit song. With this introduction, we experience the words of the song and fascinating facts about the game of baseball.
What a book! It is magnificent! The illustrations are nostalgic. Truly they are works of art, begging to be touched.
Follow the song (with Katie Casey) and the match-up between the New York Giants and the reigning World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. No matter who you are, where you live, or who you support in baseball, you'll be able to "Root Root Root for the home team. If they don't win it's a shame...."
Armchair Interviews says: For Ages 4-8 per the publishing house but adults will love it also.

Customer Reviews:
Hangs crooked.......2007-03-26
Calendar is 3/4 rounded like a baseball and it is either the shape or the hole is punched off center, but the calendar does not hang straight on the wall. Also, the number for the days is printed in somewhat small type, so it is not easily read from across the room.
Love Baseball.......2007-02-07
I love baseball and pictures of ball parks. This has really nice pictures.
Nice calendar for baseball lovers.......2007-02-06
We buy my husband a calendar every year for his office. Being a baseball fan, he really loved this one. The photos are nice and he noticed that the calendar is cut to look like a baseball diamond... something that escaped me. This year (2007) US Cellular (White Sox) park is included, which was a bonus for him.
