What's all the hype about ?.......2007-07-20
So ... I buy this book , because I am 22 , and finishing college and I see it on line . Mistake , mistake , mistake , a waste of $9 , I should just have borrowed it from the library . He repeats himself , and all it is is cute quips about getting laid and working . It's something that is not a breath of fresh air , but a breath of stale air . It's not informative , its mostly a book about drunken gatherings . I personally found it bery boring and I am wondering if I can return it ... or regift it , but that might seem tacky .
Suuch a great book :).......2007-06-27
BY FAR, one of the funniest books I have ever read. It is clever, witty and gives every twenty-something out there a sigh of relief that you're not the only one out there thinking what Karo is writing. The little jokes and thoughts about life after college are soo fun to read. My favorite parts include the one when he talks about how you haven't lived until youve drunkenly left your cell in a cab on a sat. night. which leads to then calling it a zillion times, paying the cabbie way too much for bringing it back to you, only to hear 3,000 drunk, pathetic voicemails from yourself - haha... It's like I know exactly what he means, but he can just word it sooo much better and soo much funnier -
i loved it and cant wait for the next book from him :)
Spot-On Hilarious account of 20s life in NYC.......2007-01-09
Having lived in NYC for several years after graduating college, literally every single thing Karo talked about in this totally on-point book had happened to me. I felt like I was reading the clever, hilarious version of my life, except from the perspective of a female. Actually, is it weird that a lot of my stories were exactly the same, even though I am a girl???
Great gift for friends who did the same song and dance (that you wouldn't change a minute of) as you.
The only review that matters..........2006-03-03
This book is one of these easy reads...quick page turners....will have u laughing out loud..as it did me....Aaron Karo def. hit the nail on the head in his tellings of what typical life is like in your twenties. Loved the book, a "gourmet" reading....I reccomend it to all!
I agree!!! .......2005-12-03
I agree with the review below, this is one of the funniest columns for twenty-somethings I have ever seen!!! For the most part its right off his column, but I can read it again, its that good. I think it takes a true twenty-something to really enjoy this book because most of the written humor out there is not geared to this audience.
Well done Karo!!!

great read.......2005-08-25
The Blast Master has once again brought forth an education in Hiphop. KRS-ONE's love for the Hiphop culture and movement is best described in his book Ruminations. I found it to be a very interesting and dynamic read. For those that doubt the skills and knowledge of an Emcee that has been laying vocals from Street corners to world stages is mistaken when you claim his albums are "crap" and patrons demanded thier money back at live shows could be further from the truth. I have been to several KRS-ONE shows(from Chicago, New Orleans, New york, Los Angeles, Austin, Houston and beyond) and in my experience I have never seen a crowd so enthused or invigorated. Over the past few years his rhyme styles have elevated. A truly great Emcee never has to rely on "GREAT BEATS" but moreso on lyrical content. KRS writes rhymes for the educated and enlightened listener. HIP-POP music lovers need not apply, this style the KRIS style is way beyond your level of thinking.
One Step towards Understanding. One Giant Leap towards Univerisal Consciousness.......2005-07-23
For those of you that do not read Ruminations and listen to the person that gave the book one star, obviously you are afraid of improving yourself as well as your community. To read this book, one does not need prior knowledge of spirituality, reparations for African Americans, or even Hip-Hop history. However, this book is not for people that are stagnant and unwilling to learn. Nevertheless, if you are living in the Dark Ages and want to partake in the Hip-Hop Renaissance, then expand your mind to Ruminations and digest the smorgasbord for thought by KRS-ONE. On the contrary, if you are believing life is one big "bling, bling" party and don't take the time to think beyond one's needs, then continue a life of selfishness and at the moment lifestyle and there will come a time when you will wind up looking for such insight whether it be from KRS-ONE or other philosophers, teachers, scholars, meta-physicians to regain mental stability and repentance for one's negative thoughts and actions. Like they say, "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Buy the book and invest in the common good as well as yourself. You will be glad you have taken this positive step. Like Rakim stated on Follow the Leader, "I guess nobody told you a little knowledge is dangerous." One Love.
Dope, insightful.......2005-03-19
A book that really makes you think. A good beginning as a published author for Kris. As to the klowns that gave KRS 1 star, quit being a hater and realize that kris still is and always be one of the greatest emcees in hip hop history. The kat that hated on kris' last few album probably supports trash like Chingy and Nelly.
KRS Zero.......2005-02-28
A book of lies... Look online for reviews of his recent shows. He's voted one of the most dissapointing acts, not to mention, listen to his last 3 or four albums. CRAP. KRS1 aka the Preacher needs to lay off the coke and turn down the sound at his shows and quit acting so self-righteous. Spiritual minded?! I guess you get to that level if you snort enough blow. I've seen him before, and the whole crowd wanted their money back. You can turn down your sytem Kris. No one's listening anymore. Quit trying to get all mainstream. Haven't you made enough money? cuz now you're just stealing it from your old fans who are hoping that maybe you'll put out a dope joint. I got all your new cd's, and they went to the trash along with your career. Sincerely, someone who truly cares about hip-hop. Peace
excellent beginning tome for hip-hop's philosopher--.......2004-12-06
this is a very good book, and recommended for any fan of hip-hop music and culture. it is written by one of hip-hop's most articulate elder statesmen, Kris Parker aka KRS-One. In this book he puts forth basic ideas about self-empowerment and economic and creative independence, called "Inner City Metaphysics". He addresses both sides of the Reparations controversy. He also provides an expanded text for his "Science of Rap" manual for aspiring hip-hop performers.
There are negative-minded people out there that are attempting to besmirch KRS' reputation. but the artist's website addresses all negative rumors about his public comments at www.templeofhiphop.org

If you're not laughing, you never got it........2007-06-29
Karo is tackles the ridiculousness of the undergraduate experience dead on in Ruminations on College Life. He allows you to look back at your four year, or look forward to, with the kind of hindsight that finds humor in just about everything that occurs.
Not everything covered will apply to everyone, as everyone's undergraduate experience is different, but you appreciate all elements of the book.
For those who enjoy the book, Karo puts out a online/email column that tackles his monthly 'ruminations', which is always worth checking out.
A Fun Little Voyage.......2006-02-20
Wow...look at all those other reviews. Those people are seriously deluded about the nature of this book.
People, let me be straight with you. I attend school at the University of Pennsylvania. Or, as we call it, Penn. Yes, it is the "Social Ivy". No, we don't JUST binge drink (although it does happen).
If you want proof that this guy went to class, look at the fact that he actually graduated. From Wharton. The best business school in the nation. Then, he published a book about it. Calm down.
This is a fun little book. It is entertaining, it makes light of a lot of college problems, and no one who has been in college in the past decade or so is going to find it that offensive. It's entertainment, nothing more.
It doesn't purport to be a survival guide for college, and it wasn't intended to be. Instead, it was intended to be what it is. An amusing series of anecdotes about drinking at Penn. It also teaches an important lesson. Which is that Penn is no different from other college campuses.
Take it for what it is, people. Don't get all preachy.
I recommend it. It's entertaining. Pick it up. Then pass it on. I am.

Meh. This isn't that great........2005-10-18
I admire this kid for having enough business sense to get this little book published. No doubt he probably has wealthy, powerful parents. But the material itself is not that original or dare I say ... funny. This may fare well with an audience whose tastes are minimal but for those of us in the industry Karo's writing comes off lacking.
very good.......2005-03-05
Very true stories about college life, my only complaint is that the book is too short. I found myself hi-liteing(sp) quotes in this book to share with friends later when I was supposed to be hi-liteing "real" books for classes. Can't wait for "Twenty-something life" as I am the same age as the author. This book shows us that the college experience is pretty much the same everywhere, I had similar good times at Eastern Michigan University from 97-01. Wish Karo would come to the Ann Arbor area on his comedy tour!
Aaron Karo: Alcoholic.......2004-06-07
Meet Aaron Karo: Recovering Alcoholic. Honestly, that should have been the title of this book. Nearly 75% of this book is dedicated to stories of binge drinking, hedonism, and more binge drinking.
To be fair, some of the stories Mr. Karo presents are quite humorous and moreso belong in the screenplay to an Animal House or Van Wilder knock-off rather than a book given to upcoming college freshmen. This book is NOT:
a) a college survival manual
b) a good resource of advice
c) a cult classic.
Aaron Karo often spouts lines such as,"...when you're in college, those are your prime drinking years" or "I once drank so many Jack and Cokes, and got so absurdly wasted and sick...". My personal favorite,"My mom's response to every problem is always 'You drink too much'" -- sounds like an alcoholic to me. Mr. Karo might want to inquire as to whether or not the Betty Ford Clinic has a spare bed.
College is expensive. Wasting four years of college is akin to wasting nearly $100k (depending on the school enrolled.) Mr. Karo extols the virtues of not attending class:
"It's gotten to the point where you're probably better off skipping all your classes and catching up on your sleep instead. And I love it when the professor hands out all the notes and slides for the class on the first day. Are you kidding me? At that point,I usually raise my hand and ask when the midterm is, because I know that's the next time I am showing up."
Mr. Karo - if you are not going to go to class, why bother going to college? If any of my kids took your advice I doubt they would be the productive professionals they are today. After reading your book, I declined to give it as a graduation present to my grandchildren.
Parents - don't waste your time with Aaron Karo's smarmy, hedonistic, prose. Instead buy your kids, grandkids, etc a book where they might obtain useful advice and aspire to achieve academic success:
Been There, Should've Done That II : More Tips for Making the Most of College (ISBN: 0965608611) Fantastic advice!
Confessions of a College Freshman: A Survival Guide for Dorm Life, Biology Lab, the Cafeteria, and Other First-Year Adventures
(ISBN: 1589196600) Heartfelt advice.
College 101 : The Book Your College Does Not Want You To Read
(ISBN: 0966412206) Tells you what the other books didn't cover in a provactive, tongue-in-cheek style.
Bottom line, unless your are looking for a National Lampoon tome on college life, avoid Ruminations On College Life.

Food writer Lori De Mori teams with restaurateurs Jean-Louis De Mori and Antonio Tommasi, creators of Locanda Veneta and five other acclaimed Los Angeles establishments, to show readers how to bring the Italian passion for life and good food into their own lives. The essence of a place, they maintain, comes not from what it looks like but from its spirit; in Italy Anywhere they combine recipes with vignettes and advice from the old country to help readers re-create that culinary spirit wherever they happen to be. As a rule, their dishes are simple to prepare, relying on the freshness and quality of the ingredients, rather than fancy culinary tricks, and emphasizing the minimalism so integral to Italian cooking. Food doesn't have to be complicated to be satisfying and delicious.
Chapters cover every course of the Italian meal, from stuzzichini (the appetite-awakening finger foods served before a meal begins) through dessert, including in between antipasti, pastas, risottos, soups, and dishes of fish, meat, poultry, and vegetables. Rigatoni with Chicken and Radicchio, Spaghettata with Balsamic Vinegar, and Veal Stew with Soft Polenta exemplify the most comforting of comfort foods, while Braised Monkfish with Olives and Lemon Peel, Homemade Chicken Raviolini with Chanterelles, and Grilled Tuna with Puréed Sweet Yellow Peppers bring the most sophisticated Italian flavors home. Summer Peaches in Prosecco with Mint is a refreshingly light dessert; for those seeking the elegantly rich, Vanilla Cream Custard with Caramel Sauce fits the bill.
Lori De Mori's talent as a food writer--her articles have appeared in Bon Appétit, Food & Wine, and Saveur--is evident both in the helpful notes that accompany each recipe (how to fry squid, for instance) and in the delightful essays that pepper the book on such topics as Venice's Rialto fish market, chef watching, and the perfect tomato sauce. As the authors say, "the most Italian thing you can do to your home and your kitchen ... is to infuse it with food that warms both the belly and the soul." These enticing recipes are sure to make readers live like Italians all over the world. --Robin Donovan

Great!.......2005-10-25
The week I received this cookbook, I tried five of the recipes. Every one of them was delicious -- especially the Crabmeat Ravioli with Saffron Sauce, one of my favorites from Locanda Veneta. (If only the Tiramisu recipe would have been included!!!)
Explicit, delicious, one of my favorite cookbooks!.......2001-11-04
One day my husband brought this cookbook home as a gift and it literally changed the way I cook. I began with two recipes, one "un buon spaghetatta" and the other a white bean soup. The recipes are so explicit that even a novice cook will have success, yet they are written in a friendly, smart style that neither condescends nor leaves anything out. If you have ever traveled to Italy, you will recognize the results as so authentically Italian tasting that you will be astounded. I now think differently about many things (garlic - less is more) and balsamic vinegar (used to add a subtle punch to pasta dishes!)... and I love the flavors and textures this book has brought to our meals. I couldn't recommend it more highly, and it's a fun read as well.
More Than Just Another Cookbook.......2001-06-07
Although this is indeed a cookbook, it is really much more than that. The authors have shared their love of Italian food, both through recipes used in their many Los Angeles restaurants, as well as the many stories and culinary tidbits interspersed throughout the book. This book expresses the belief that dining Italian style is much more than extraordinary food, but is in fact more about the combination of grace, generosity, and simplicity with which the food is offered. It shares the importance of taking time to savor meals with family and friends, enjoying simply prepared foods made with the freshest seasonal ingredients. It is their belief, that you can live an Italian culinary life anywhere, by following these simple principles.
The book begins with a brief overview on the absolute essentials for an Italian kitchen, including olive oil, parmesan cheese and wine. The following chapters are broken up into the usual chapters found in an Italian cookbook, with everything from Antipasti to Desserts. The Antipasti chapter contains an extensive selection of recipes including recipes for olives, bruschetta, focaccia, vegetable tapenades, and many more. There is also a very nice selection of assorted salads to be used as an appetizer or a light lunch. I particularly enjoyed the Fresh Mushroom, Arugula, and Parmesan Cheese salad, which is a wonderful start to any meal.
The First Course, or Primi chapter is divided into Dried Pasta, Fresh Pasta, Risotto, Soups, Gnocchi and Polenta. Almost all of these recipes are easy to prepare with easy to find ingredients. Also included are recipes for basic broths, simple sauces, and instructions for making fresh pasta.
The Main Course or Secondi chapter is complete with seafood and many assorted meat selections. The Venetian-Style Mussels and Potatoes was delicious, and very easy to prepare. I have also made the recipe for Pan-Roasted Chicken with Sweet Peppers, Olives And Capers a number of times, and it is quickly becoming a family favorite in my house. Compared to earlier chapters, I found the Contorni, or Vegetable Side Dish chapter to be a bit too brief, but the recipes shared here do cover all the basics.
The book concludes with the chapter on Dolci or Desserts, sharing a few tasty recipes, mostly fruit based, as well as a few recipes for traditional cookies. An explanation is given on the Italian outlook about desserts, compared to other cultures. Whereas many in America look at luscious desserts as the highlight of their meal, Italians usually consider fresh seasonal fruit to be the perfect complement to end a fine meal. Although I did enjoy reading this book, as well as trying many of the recipes, I would have preferred this book if it had contained some photographs of some of the tasty recipes. Apart from that, this book is a good choice for anyone who wants to understand what Italian cuisine is all about. One learns from this book that eating Italian style is as much about lifestyle as it is the basic food.
Customer Reviews:
Still contains useful insights.......2007-02-25
I was keen to read this expanded and edited collection of columns, given the high quality of the authors' Accelerated C++. This is not quite as good as that book, but it's held up better than some of its contemporaries, like Carroll and Ellis's Designing and Coding Reusable C++.
The chapters are quite short, but they feel cohesive and flow well. The early part of the book is perhaps the most dated. There are discussions of implementing a string class and handle classes - they're treated well, but it's likely you've seen this several times before. Also, I didn't find the 'string picture' chapters, designed to illustrate class design, terribly interesting or illuminating of the underlying principles of object orientation (I didn't like them much in Accelerated C++ either).
However, the section on templates remains relevant, and the discussion of function objects and generic programming is a very good introduction. The later chapters on API design also retain insights. And in particular, the chapter on stream manipulators is very cool. It's also very good at discussing implementation and design issues and the thought processes that go into them. The feel is of someone talking you through how they went about writing some useful C++ and the trade offs involved.
In summary, this is a little dated, but it still has some bits and pieces that you won't find elsewhere. Not one to own at all costs, but keep an eye out for a cheap second hand copy, and when the price is right, pounce.
Less timely.......2005-12-27
The quality of the authors' technical knowledge is beyond question. They write in an extremely articulate way. They explain in meticulously correct ways how to undertake different (very useful) tasks, most especially the construction of handle classes. Because the content is a family of carefully reworked magazine articles, I think that it conveys the context in which these idioms are most useful somewhat weakly. At one time, this was just the best information available. Now, I think there are better books, including the authors' own Accelerated C++. Personally, I think this is one to take from the library---not one to buy.
Easy to read Intermediate C++ book.......2000-08-24
While this book came out before the ISO C++ (99) standard was finalized it still has a lot of relevant material in it. It is clearly presented, and the underlying design choices are explained and expanded on.
A word of caution, the topic on Smart pointers is interesting, but don't just copy it out, get a tested version from the C++ library "boost". Its like the string class every text seems to use, copy it, use it to learn from but don't use it in an actual project. You'll just have to go through the debugging process that everyone else has already done.
This book focuses on C++ Design and that is a hard subject to teach well. The mechanics of the language are much easier to master, the putting it all together in the correct way is what this book focuses on.
I'd also like to say that I think this book is better written than any of the C++Report articles that A.Koening wrote. My guess is that the review process is more stringent and he and B. Moo had more time to work the text over. In any case it is one of the easier to understand and read intermediate level C++ books.
Superior Read, Top 5 programming book.......2000-08-18
Nestled between 'learn in 24 hour' books, uml tomes, and vc references is a smallish, silly looking book called Ruminations on C++. At first glance you may be nervous as you find cows on the cover, but this gem is one of the best programming books I've every enjoyed. This book is targeted to the intermediate C++ programmer who has mastered syntax and basic idioms, and wants to move beyond into more complex uses. The book introduces (some may say, pounds) the concept of smart pointers, containers and iterators, templates, and function adapters in a ah-ha! enlightening kind of way. Once you understand these concepts and start employing them in your programs, you'll wonder how you could have ever written programs without them. Some readers may be bothered by the fact that the chapters are 'regurgitations' of previous articles the writer had written, but I would highly recommend that you pick this up. The treatment on the SmartPointer alone is worth the price. Buy it now!!
Insight and Experience.......2000-01-19
The book lives up to it's title. It is a must-have for any C++ programmer who claims to be an expert. The insights offerred in this book are the kind that are truly gained only after a decade of programming. If you have fallen in love with C++, this book will consummate your love.
Book Description
Rumination (recyclic negative thinking), is now recognised as important in the development, maintenance and relapse of recurrence of depression. For instance, rumination has been found to elevate, perpetuate and exacerbate depressed mood, predict future episodes of depression, and delay recovery during cognitive therapy.
Cognitive therapy is one of the most effective treatments for depression. However, depressive relapse and recurrence following cognitive therapy continue to be a significant problem. An understanding of the psychological processes which contribute to relapse and recurrence may guide the development of more effective interventions.
This is a major contribution to the study and treatment of depression which reviews a large body of research on rumination and cognitive processes, in depression and related disorders, with a focus on the implications of this knowledge for treatment and clinical management of these disorders.
- First book on rumination in depressive and emotional disorders
- Contributors are the leaders in the field
- First editor is a rising researcher and clinician with specialist interest in depression, and second editor is world renowned for his work on cognitive therapy of emotional disorders

An essential primer in Meta-Cognitive Therapy!.......2005-02-03
Meta-cognitive therapy, in its essence, is as old as Buddhist detached mindfulness and experiential attunement to the self-reflective state of being the Thinker behind one's Thoughts. The West-East clinical synthesis of meta-cognition and mindfulness, however, appears to have been slowed down by our methodological ethic of needing emperical validation: despite anecdotal data on the self-regulatory efficacy of meta-cognitive states, the Western scientist-practitioner appears to have been awaiting the formal sanction of empirical validation.
"Depressive Rumination" by Wells and Papageorgiou provides such a sanction and makes application of meta-cognitive techniques clinically transparent. The book introduces the theory and research behind the emerging field of meta-cognitive therapy and provides step-by-step clinical protocols for applying the armamentarium of meta-cogntive therpay to the all-too-familiar presentation of perservative, recyclic depressogenic rumination.
Given the fundamental similarity of rumination (past-focused) and worry (future-focused), as perservative thinking styles primarily different in time-focus, the book not only provides direction to how help clients manage their depressive rumination, but also enhances clinician's appreciation for how to meta-cogntively engage anxiety/worry presentations. As such, the book is an important primer on meta-cognitive therapy in general.

A new, useful, and refreshing approach to depression at last.......2004-11-28
Rumination is the most salient, mental feature in depression and other mood disorders. Understanding this process will improve current psychological therapies for depression. This book clearly achieves this goal and much more. The editors should be congratulated for producing a state-of-the-art volume on this important process. This book is essential reading for all students, academics, and clinicians.

The leading experts in the field have been brought together in this insightful, refreshing and unique work. Depressive Rumination is essential reading for any clinician, researcher or student that wishes to keep abreast with cutting-edge theory and practice.

Beyond Numeracy by bestselling author John Allen Paulos is, according to the introduction, "in part a dictionary, in part a collection of short mathematical essays, and in part the ruminations of a numbers man." This book is genuinely different from other books on mathematics intended for a wide audience as the essay topics are indisputably diverse. (Titles include "Human Consciousness, Its Fractal Nature" and "Mathematics in Ethics.") Furthermore, Paulos's unique sense of humor and ability to intelligently editorialize are delightful--especially in a book on such a dry subject.
Book Description
From the author of the national bestseller Innumeracy, a delightful exploration and explanation of mathematical concepts from algebra to zero in easily accessible alphabetical entries. "Paulos . . . does for mathematics what The Joy of Sex did for the boudoir. . . ."--Washington Post Book World. First time in paperback.

A good starter on some of the more esoteric topics of math.......2005-01-24
But you can save your money by only buying a used version of this book.
But how many people do you think are going to be interested in what are quadratic equations if they happen to have missed them in high school? If they haven't seen them by that time, they are not likely inclined enough toward mathematics to pick up this book on their own volition.
The writing was good and clear, but two questions immediately come to mind:
1. At whom is this aimed?
2. Some of the topics were whittled down to bare bones arguments. For the things that he discussed that I did understand, I could see that he left out a lot in the interest of keeping the reader entertained. But the question is: For things that I don't know, how much was left out for the same reasons and how much better could it have been understood if he had bothered to throw in one or two examples with the mathematics worked out.
One particularly good example of this was the "Arrow's Impossibility Theorem." I would very much like to have seen enough logic discussed to be able to follow the proof.
GREAT INTRO REFERENCE TO SIMPLE AND COMPLEX MATH.......2004-08-13
This is almost a sequel to Innumeracy in which Paulos goes beyond the simple exposition of people's difficulties with math to teach, in a very readable fashion, to main concepts of mathematics, be it simple high school, college, or even the complex research mathematics.
The nice thing about this book is that you can read it bit by bit, since each chapter that deals with a topic is about 3-5 pages long, so you won't get bored and if you don't understand one topic you can move on to the next one. The topics are not really connected, so one can just move on to somehting one finds more interesting.
Overall, I believe I now know what many of the complex topics like chaos theory are about. Enough for a cocktail conversation with a mathematician at least.
one of the few great mathematics books........2004-01-25
I was captured entirely by "innumaracy", so i dwelve deeper into John Allen Paulo works, his website and other books, and i manage to buy several of the books.
I particularly like beyond numeracy. It is not as easily read as innumeracy, but it is deeper and more insightful.
It is written in loose shorter essays focusing on special mathematic things. I love the explanation of "infinity", "chaos theory", "pi", "probability" etc. I think people interested slightly in mathematics will be enchanted and enjoying the book.
Some of the essays are only sweet writing words, some contain heavy formula that needs digestions and basic math understanding.
There are about 70 short essays in all that can be read independently at leasure. I found out i strted to get dizzy after reading 10 essays in a straight reading.
John proved that you can make dry stuff interesting, and if you read some of the materials and use if for conversation, it will makes you look like a whiz with great taste! that is one additional benefit of reading! and you will do it without the usual pain. ;-)
Fascinating dictionary.......2003-09-24
These short essays, arranged alphabetically present a peek into mathematical topics, some I've long forgotten (differentials) and others new (non-Euclidian geometry). Paulos writes directly, usually without formulas, and if a particular essay doesn't click for you, keep turning, there's a new one in a few pages. Although the essays are mostly independent, there are some interesting connections. In light of the California governors voting recall, the section on voting systems seems clairvoyant, but he warns against the "Jean Dixon" effect in an earlier essay. The essays present mathematics as a dynamic field, and something as basic as variables, was just invented in the 16th century. Even since this book first came out, Fermat's last theorem has been proved, and there is even a larger prime number.
For those working with computers, there is a reminder of some of the mathematical background such as Al-Khwarizmi in Baghdad inventing the "Algorithm", the Turing Test, and sorting.
Paulos always touches on the human aspects of math, such as the fractal nature of human consciousness or mathematics in ethics.
QED - a great read
Good for those with interest in math to start.......2002-02-24
I thought this a good book that showed how math is valuable in the real world. The author tries to avoid reading like a text book to try and make math come alive. He is moderately successful, but it is hard not to have some mathy jargon and notation, which I think will discourage those who don't have some motivation to think about math to start with. Overall a good book and I will try to read his first book if I get a chance.

Ruminations, recipes and robust raillery.......2005-12-09
It's a very entertaining and amusing read. The essays make some very valid points and there are recipes you probably won't find anywhere else. Interesting pictures of Britney Spears and Hillary Duff before they made it big. The authors plan for lawyers is especially fascinating.
