Book Description
You're either a Purple Cow or you're not. You're either remarkable or invisible. Make your choice.
What do Starbucks and JetBlue and KrispyKreme and Apple and DutchBoy and Kensington and Zespri and Hard Candy have that you don't? How do they continue to confound critics and achieve spectacular growth, leaving behind former tried-and true brands to gasp their last?
Face it, the checklist of tired 'P's marketers have used for decades to get their product noticed -Pricing, Promotion, Publicity, to name a few-aren't working anymore. There's an exceptionally important 'P' that has to be added to the list. It's Purple Cow.
Cows, after you've seen one, or two, or ten, are boring. A Purple Cow, though...now that would be something. Purple Cow describes something phenomenal, something counterintuitive and exciting and flat out unbelievable. Every day, consumers come face to face with a lot of boring stuff-a lot of brown cows-but you can bet they won't forget a Purple Cow. And it's not a marketing function that you can slap on to your product or service. Purple Cow is inherent. It's built right in, or it's not there. Period.
In Purple Cow, Seth Godin urges you to put a Purple Cow into everything you build, and everything you do, to create something truly noticeable. It's a manifesto for marketers who want to help create products that are worth marketing in the first place.

Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable .......2007-10-04
I have a lot of stuff by Seth Godin and think he is brilliant but this book disappointed me.
After reading Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey Moore which Seth eludes to in a lot of his work I think Purple Cow brings Moores book in to the 21st century and adds different words but the meaning and theory of Crossing the Chasm still remain Moores work.
It is one of Seth Godins early works and having familiarised my self with most of Seth's later stuff I think that's what caused disappointment.
Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable is inspirational for those wanting to get some idea of how ideas where virtually created out of nothing and his definition of a Purple Cow is essential if you want to do anything in life worth talking about.
I did read the reviews before I bought and expected a bit more and something new but that never happened.

Good marketing.......2007-10-02
The ideas in this book is not new. In fact, Godin just rehashed a basic marketing idea into a very pretty book. The contents on its own would be 2 or maybe 3 stars.
But why I gave this book 4 stars is the way he marketed it. He basically made his book a Purple Cow. That is what I got out of this book.
I call that Good Marketing.
Remarkrable book on advertising.......2007-09-25
The purple cow is a great read. It gets straight to the point and stick with it to the very end. Keeps the reader interested, and I now know what a purple cow is and how to recognize a purple cow. Great job Seth!!
Concise, forward-thinking, unique, REMARKABLE.......2007-09-20
The best way to make customers talk about your company and products is to give them something to talk about. Seems like common sense, right? But according to Seth Godin, few businesses take the simple steps needed to bring their products to the front of the pack.
In this collection of short essays, or "riffs," as he calls them, author Godin tells you how and why to revamp your product development cycle and marketing efforts to highlight your company's "remarkable" aspects. A must-read for any entrepreneur looking to be the next new thing.
Tired of Being One of the Herd?.......2007-09-04
Going along doing the same thing as everyone else? You want to know how to stand out and be distinctive? Seth Godin's book Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable is your guide. At the mention of this book's title, you're thinking about what a purple cow would look like, aren't you? Briefly, the explanation of the title is that Seth and his family were on vacation, driving through miles and miles of French pastures, seeing cows, cows and more cows. At first, the cows were interesting and beautiful. After a while though, the next cow looked just the same as the cow before it and it was all pretty boring. But then they thought, a PURPLE cow, now THAT would be something remarkable.
It's the same with businesses and marketing. In order to truly stand out from the rest of the herd, you have to be truly remarkable. And remarkable businesses do not follow or copy someone else's idea of marketing. They are the leaders. He sites examples of businesses such as diverse as Schindler Elevator Corporation, Tombstone Pizza, Sam Adams beer, Yamaha piano and Vanguard mutual funds and how they took existing industries and made radical transformations to them through innovative marketing.
Here's what I think is the biggest take away. Seth says that the opposite of remarkable is "very good." Very good is an everyday occurrence, hardly worth mentioning -- certainly not the basis of breakthrough success. He asks, "are you making very good stuff? How fast can you stop?"
Purple cows are risk takers. There are so few purple cows because people are afraid to have others not like them (there will always be some detractors when you're remarkable), afraid to break the rules, afraid to occasionally be wrong. The more close-minded your market, the more crowded the marketplace and the busier your customers, the more you need a Purple Cow. He urges that dipping a toe in the waters is setting yourself up for failure. You have to go all the way with dramatic improvements to see giant payoffs.
Stop your mooing and read this book!

"One night, after thinking it over for some time, Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight." So begins this gentle story that shows just how far your imagination can take you. Armed only with an oversized purple crayon, young Harold draws himself a landscape full of beauty and excitement. But this is no hare-brained, impulsive flight of fantasy. Cherubic, round-headed Harold conducts his adventure with the utmost prudence, letting his imagination run free, but keeping his wits about him all the while. He takes the necessary purple-crayon precautions: drawing landmarks to ensure he won't get lost; sketching a boat when he finds himself in deep water; and creating a purple pie picnic when he feels the first pangs of hunger.
Crockett Johnson's understated tribute to the imagination was first published in 1955, and has been inspiring readers of all ages ever since. Harold's quiet but magical journey reminds us of the marvels the mind can create, and also gives us the wondrous sense that anything is possible. (Ages 4 to 8)
Book Description
One evening Harold decided to go for a walk in the moonlight. But there wasn't any moon, and Harold needed a moon for a walk in the moonlight. Fortunately, he had brought his purple crayon. So he drew a moon. He also needed something to walk on. So he drew a path...
And thus begins one of the most imaginative and enchanting adventures in all of children's books. The creative concept behind this beloved story has intrigued children and kept them absorbed for generations, as page by page unfolds the dramatic and clever adventures of Harold and his purple crayon.

This quickly became my 3 year olds FAVORITE book!.......2007-08-04
We love books and I try to provide my daughter with many good quality and age appropriate stories. She LOVES this book! It's an easy read and is completely adorable! I would highly suggest adding this book to your collection!
the power of imagination.......2007-07-16
This was one of my favorites as a child. I can't count the number of times I read this book, then got out my crayons and drew my own worlds.
I've been reading this book to my son since he was two weeks old. The simple illustrations captivated his attention, and he would lean against my chest, stare at the pictures, and listen to my voice. Such a precious moment. He briefly lost interest when he was concentrating on getting where he wanted to go, then came back around to it. Sometimes he'd carry it to me saying "weed, mommy." He's four now, and we still enjoy reading it together.
It's been wonderful to see his reactions change as he gets older. This is one of those stories with many layers, so children of all ages will find something new. Such a fabulous book.
PURPLE POWER.......2007-06-27
I wasn't too sure if my Kindergarten students would enjoy this story, but they were very excited about it. They were totally engaged in every page. It's a great book for teaching sequencing. I followed up the story by having each child draw in purple crayon only, their adventure. Instead of "Harold and the Purple Crayon" they put their name in the title. It gave them an opportunity to use their imagination, just as Harold had done. This 50th Anniversary story has stood the test of time.
such a classic! great book........2007-06-27
I loved this book as a child and love reading it to my son now. It's such a delight. Great book!
Son loves this book.......2007-06-14
We recently purchased this book for our 2 1/2 yr old son. This is the first book that after reading to him, he has said, "Read it again!" We read this at least three times in a row the first night.
Harold uses his crayon to bring his imagination to life and take him on an adventure. He wants to take a walk in the moonlight, so he draws a moon and a path...later he needs something to eat, so he draws his favorite pies...he can't eat all the pie, so he draws animals to finish the pie...
It really is an adorable book and does a great job of capturing the child's imagination.

Issues of Feminism.......2007-09-21
"The Color Purple," involves struggles of women to achieve recognition as individuals deserving of fair and equal treatment, in face of male dominance. Both the book and the movie, of the same title, shed light on feminist issues.
The male dominance is in various forms and includes physical aggressiveness. Albert (Mr.) adamantly declares to Celie, "Men spose to wear the pants" (1982: 272).The narrator conveys by way of letters from one person (Celie) to another, the epistolary form. The feminist level of stance is powerful in the novel. Celie struggles to find peace and establish her worthiness. She was abused and raped by her "father," she was dispossessed of her infant children, she is forced to marry Albert (Mr___) who she does not want, she loses her sister Nettie because of her adulterous husband's sexual aggressiveness and philandering.
Women are heavily exploited, more so Celie who in the marriage is made to look after Albert's offspring, to toil on the farm, and to submit to all of Albert's demands and those of his offspring. Celie writes, "Mr...marry me to take care of his children. I marry him cause my daddy made me. I don't love Mr___and he don't love me" (1982: 64). The book dramatically displays how female inequality is rampant. The preacher condemns and attacks Shug for her looseness, whereas Albert's wanton infidelity is tolerated. Celie's relationship with Albert is unloving and vile. Mary Agnes solicits a white uncle to help get Sofia out of prison, the uncle rapes her. Albert attempts to force Nettie (Celie's sister) to submit to him, but she leaves after successfully fighting him off. Physical violence against the women is common, apparently even in relationships of lovingness, such as that between Harpo and his wife Sofia. Harpo beats Sofia because, as he says, "The wife s'pose to mind" (1982: 64). Harpo even considers it respectable to physically violate his wife.
The narrator conveys the message that woman must full-fledgedly oppose the treatment of unfairness meted on them by men, and that they should achieve this through uniting and helping each other. The women in the novel, often converge in taking a feminist stance. They band together to hold each other up in support and sustenance, even those with interest in the same men. Feminist bonds of sisterhood are borne out as important, these we see in Nettie and Celie, in Sophia and Odessa, even in Mary Agnes and Sofia, in Albert's sister and Celie. in Tashi and Olivia, and in Shug Avery and Celie. The latter, in their relationship, encapsulate the twin roles of sisters and lovers.
Some of the women, such as Sofia adapt to fighting for and defending themselves. Sofia is of strong character, she is not subservient, she is powerful and physically strong. She can be quite aggressive but this spills into a dreadful experience at the hands of the police after she had the nerve to talk back to the white mayor. Subsequently, Sofia is sentenced to be the mayor's servant; doing dull, irksome, and fatiguing work for many years. The sisterhood feminist bond between Sofia and Mary Agnes is stronger than their mutual interest of affection for Harpo. Mary goes as far as enduring rape on behalf of attempting to get Sofia released. And when Mary Agnes goes off to pursue a singing career, it is Sophia who looks after her child.
The most feminist liberated and independent-thinking woman, of them all, is Shug Avery; despite the verbal attacks meted on her by church elders because of her lifestyle. She is a career blues singer, an occupation that offers her much more freedom than the others who are under the confines of home, housework and bringing up children. Shug's stance on sexual freedom is stronger than that of many other women, she has numerous affairs. Her feminist strength still involves her strong belief in God, she does not worship or believe in the conventional way. Indeed it is the relationship between Shug and Celie that is the central theme in the novel. Shug will liberate Celie in numerous aspects of her life. Shug simultaneously becomes a sister, friend and lover to Celie as she guides her into emotional and financial independence. Shug's feminist stance stands out. Her gender and opinions do not preclude her from being humanly equal to everybody and possessing the integrity. She passes these qualities onto Celie. Paradoxically, it is the occupation of sewing, "a woman's job," that significantly gains Celie independence--but the product is trousers, to be worn by women. Celie becomes strong enough to point out to Albert that the qualities of honesty, integrity, and independence are valid for both genders. Celie criticizes Albert's contention that, "...Shug act more manly than most men. I mean she upright, honest. Speak her mind and the devil take the hindmost. You know Shug will fight...Just like Sophia. She bound to live her life and be herself no matter what" (1982: 270). This exemplifies addressing the issues of feminine and masculine temperament in the novel. The novel asserts that women, as people can be just as weak and strong as men, therefore gender should never be a yardstick for perceptions of human qualities.
The book is a complex weaving of events in a woman's life that are hard to completely represent in a movie. Nevertheless, the movie maintains most of the heartbreaking issues which mirror the hardships that happened in the author's life. Whoopi Goldberg artfully plays the shy and abused Celie, Oprah Winfrey is powerful as the strong and no-nonsense Sophia, Margaret Avery is the gifted and independent singer Shug Avery, and Danny Glover is the abusive husband who disallows Celie having contact with Nettie and others. The issues that were toned down or understated in this movie, such as the lesbian loving and the violence, would probably be more graphically played during this era. That was 1985, not that long ago, but film-makers were less blunt with their images. The "lesbian" (the word is not mentioned in the book) acts are not conceived as being lesbian at all, but as a means (for Shug) to show Celie that a person can be loved and not just used as a toilet for sex. Compared to the book the movie rendition can sometimes appear to be too glamorous, too glorified, and too sweet. Director Spielberg commendably images the brutality of a rape by showing hanging leather belts banging against the head of the shaking bed.
The actors performed their roles exceptionally well. These include Whoopi Goldberg who plays the shy and abused Celie, Oprah Winfrey who plays the strong, no nonsense Sophia, Margaret Aver as the gifted singer Shug Avery, Danny Glover as the abusive husband to Celie who goes to the extent of not allowing Celie to have any contact with her sister Nettie, among others. The movie depicts the female characters as generally good persons, not flawless. The women are of unique backgrounds, conditions and talents, and they weave together to help each other out, in feminism strength. The men are generally likeable, save for abusive Danny Glover (who, anyway, later redeems himself); so it is difficult to look at the movie and the book as an attack on black masculinity in the course of displaying black (or overall) feminist strength. Consider that Rev. Samuel the missionary adopts Celie's children; Buster the boxer dates and does not try to overrule the strong-willed Sophia; even Shug's husband, Grady (in the movie version) accepts Shug for who she is, despite knowing her past of licentiousness.
Both the book and movie turn out to be amongst the most powerful in addressing issues of feminism in everyday life. Alice Walker prevalently employs black English and black characters, but this is a book and movie that almost anyone, near and far, can relate to. The book offers much more in that sphere than the movie, but both declare that triumph in a woman's life often happens when misfortune and adversity are challenged by feminist unity and forthrightness in face of a male dominated world. Women's issues come in various shapes and sizes, as the book and movie illustrate, but strength is indeed in numbers, ambitiousness, education, and becoming outward looking other than insular. A woman is to significantly love and cherish herself, get rid of the oppression blocking her, before she can fully appreciate and enjoy herself as well as others.
Incredible.......2007-09-14
I have seen the movie a million and one times but this book did it in for me. Although the movie was amazing, you have to read the book. There was a lot in the book I felt should have been in the movie. Overall this is a great book to read.
Excellent product........2007-09-11
Absolutely loved this book. It was in almost perfect condition. Better than described. Thanks for the great book and the great price.
a timeless story about redemption and the power of forgiveness.......2007-09-05
This gem of a story is about Celie, an abused
woman that uses the magic of reading and writing
letters to help her overcome the abusive life
she lives with Mister, her husband in an arranged
marriage. Through her friendship with Shug Avery,
and her belief in God, she learns to stand up
and value herself as a human being. She eventually
forgives those that abused her when she realizes
that they cannot have power over her if she doesn't
let them.
Some have accused the author and the story of being
anti-black men but the story is anti- a system that
oppressed the meak, and that's something that
everyone can relate to if they are willing to open
their minds to this wonderful book.
Lovely Reading.......2007-07-13
This story is a captivating and wonderful tale of a family torn apart by abuse. It's lovely but may not be suitable for younger audiences because of some sexual content. I feel in love with this book once I got to the end. I wont spoil it but I greatly recommend it.

A wonderful book.......2007-07-03
By Ellie
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse is good for all ages. Lilly, a cute little mouse, loves her new teacher, Mr. Slinger. She goes shopping and gets a new purse. She can't wait to show Mr. Slinger her new gifts. She is a little too excited and gets in trouble. In this book Kevin Henkes is very descriptive and creative in the writing and the pictures. It pulls you in and you can't wait to find out what's going to happen next. The problem of the story and how it resolves itself is very interesting. Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse is a wonderful book.
Lily's purple purse is wonderful.......2007-05-18
My daughter really enjoyed this book. We purchased this and Chrysanthemum and she loves both. I have read these over and over again. This is a cute tail about Lily and her new toy and how she gets in trouble trying to show off her toys in class. It has wonderful detailed artwork and the storyline is very enjoyable.

Mae White
I read the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. The reason I would recommend this book is so people could decide if they like it even though I didn't. I didn't like this book because Lilly was mean. In the book I read that Lilly was writing mean stuff to her teacher just because the teacher took her stuff away when she wasn't supposed to have it in school. This convinced me that it was not a good book.

The Message Bible.......2007-01-11
This is very easy to understand! I love it! It was purchased because I was going to a Joyce Meyer Seminar--- it was wasy to use- even when the lights went down in the auditorium--
I continue to use it- for my spiritual guidance on a daily basis, it's a joy because of that, not to mention it's my favorite color, purple!
What a Shame.......2007-01-05
Not that putting the Scriptures into words that can be understood is a bad thing, but that as a singular goal in and of itself is shameful. This method detaches the Scriptures from what they have always existed as: divinely beautiful, heroic verse, majestic Prose, a treasure from heaven, something that surpasses everything that conforms to the zeitgeist. In other words, the Scriptures are meant to transcend the fads of our day and lift us outside time into the presence of God. All that this and many other modern translations do is constantly remind us that we are in the 21st century and surrounded by multitudes of T.V.-softened brains and Britney-Spears-listening pop fanatics. The Scriptures are meant not only to be understood, but to communicate the life and grace of Christ to us: something that exists outside of time and is therefore unchanged by it. I am sorry to see such putrescent translations (and music and television) pouring out of the Evangelical Community. I am sick and tired of it and this translation just goes too far. "Contemporary Language"? That sounds like an excuse to be irreverent, shallow, and philosophically deprived. It is translations like this that secretly make me wish the Scriptures simply remained in Latin.
I pray that the youth of our day, instead of trying to conform Christianity to their own idioms, will transform themselves (or rather let God transform them) to fit with what Christianity is and always has been: the glorious and ancient faith. Those two paths are incompatible and so one must be chosen over the other. I choose the latter; people who insist on such rubbish as this choose the former.
A piece of advice: do you want the Scriptures to have more meaning for you? Turn off the television and start reading books: not the modern rubbish, but good, classical literature from around the world. Not the Newspaper, not the internet, but Books. Read Virgil, C.S. Lewis, Chesterton, Homer, Dickens...that should be a good list to start you off. Also, turn off your Britney Spears and either keep five minutes of silence or listen to Bach, Tallis, Byrd, and even Beethoven if you must. Once you do that for a time, the Scriptures will take on entirely new meaning, and you won't have to ruin their Sacredness in the process.
The Message, Stone & Purple Cover.......2006-11-13
Love this translation! Price terrific --- only downside is the pages are so thin that it's sometimes difficult going through them. However, that said, would purchase it again, for myself or as a gift!
The Message Bible.......2006-02-28
I highly recommend this Bible because it is easy to understand in this contemporary language. The younger generation will greatly benefit from this Bible since they are so real and transparent. You will definitely love this Bible.
The Message - gets it across.......2006-02-27
It is very refreshing to read God's word in the exact language that I use every day. It is so plain to understand, and it comes alive in a whole new way. I love the purple/stone cover. It feels very nice in my hands when I'm reading.

Purple Hibiscus, Nigerian-born writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's debut, begins like many novels set in regions considered exotic by the western reader: the politics, climate, social customs, and, above all, food of Nigeria (balls of fufu rolled between the fingers, okpa bought from roadside vendors) unfold like the purple hibiscus of the title, rare and fascinating. But within a few pages, these details, however vividly rendered, melt into the background of a larger, more compelling story of a joyless family. Fifteen-year-old Kambili is the dutiful and self-effacing daughter of a rich man, a religious fanatic and domestic tyrant whose public image is of a politically courageous newspaper publisher and philanthropist. No one in Papa's ancestral village, where he is titled "Omelora" (One Who Does For the Community), knows why Kambili¹s brother cannot move one of his fingers, nor why her mother keeps losing her pregnancies. When a widowed aunt takes an interest in Kambili, her family begins to unravel and re-form itself in unpredictable ways. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Fifteen-year-old Kambili's world is circumscribed by the high walls and frangipani trees of her family compound. Her wealthy Catholic father, under whose shadow Kambili lives, while generous and politically active in the community, is repressive and fanatically religious at home.
When Nigeria begins to fall apart under a military coup, Kambili's father sends her and her brother away to stay with their aunt, a University professor, whose house is noisy and full of laughter. There, Kambili and her brother discover a life and love beyond the confines of their father's authority. The visit will lift the silence from their world and, in time, give rise to devotion and defiance that reveal themselves in profound and unexpected ways. This is a book about the promise of freedom; about the blurred lines between childhood and adulthood; between love and hatred, between the old gods and the new.

Great book.......2007-10-06
I really enjoyed Purple Hibiscus. I am intrigued by books of different cultures and places. Some of the content of the book was disturbing and at times heart breaking, but it made for a relistic view into this young girl's life. I am not a religous person at all but I have to say that the positive spirituality in this book was enlightening and touching. One of the things that struck me most was the differences in the way the African characters treated family. There was a lot of love, respect and genuine caring among them, even the younger generation. Being an American it always amazes me how much many other cultures value their extended family and are willing and WANT to do much for them. I am looking forward to reading another book by this author and highly reccomend this book.
As unique and beautiful as the title suggests.......2007-08-16
No wonder Chinua Achebe is delighted by Chimamanda Adichie. And no wonder she can dare weave his legendary title into her story's open. Chimamanda Adichie has a very special writing talent -- raw yet also subtly refined. Her story reads the way incredible dancers dance -- convincingly, passionately, honestly, and seemingly, without any effort. "Purple Hibiscus" is insightful, fresh, honest, real. If you like Haitian writer Edwidge Dandicott (whose work I adore!), especially "Krik Krak," I think you'll also like Chimamanda Adichie.
Good bookclub selection.......2007-07-02
I very much enjoyed this book. My bookclub, Reading Roses, read this as our June selectin and everyone really enjoyed it. I think this book brought out the most discussion we have had in a while. It was quite interesting to read about life in another country; well written; characters were well developed. Good choice for a bookclub.
Very engaging, but simplistic.......2007-06-24
I decided to read this book after Chimamanda won an award in London. The book was definitely worth reading. It grips you right from the very beginning and keeps you hooked till the very end. It also delves a lot into the Ibo Nigerian culture that makes me wonder if non-Nigerians can follow the entire story.
My only criticism is that the book is very simplistic, which may be a good thing for someone who just wants a very light reading.
Engrossing storytelling.......2007-05-07
Adichie takes any non-African reader into an enthralling fictional world without compromising anything about the context, history and sensibility of Nigerian life. She achieves this through sharp, immediate characterization and a strong storyline. It's not a "difficult" book - it's a total page-turner - but it packs a great deal of complexity beneath its apparently simple surface. When you finish this slim novel, you know you've been somewhere.

The book got a little bit longer with every turn of the page........2007-07-05
I was given this book as an award for winning psychology student of the department at my high school. I, as a psychology student, am not a fan of all the neuroscience, and I believe that's why my teacher chose this book for me. It started off interestingly and I really actually enjoyed the first two chapters. However, as the book continued, it just got a little bit longer and harder to read as I moved into later chapters. The author didn't really do a good job of staying on track, fully explaining his ideas, and then explaining them correctly. What made the book even worse was that he puts all of his numerical notes at the end of the book and not as footnotes. Therefore, I had to constantly turn back and forth and save two pages when I stopped reading.
I ended up just closing the book instead of reading the last 15 pages because I wasn't happy with the way Ramachandran did this.
Brief Tour of Human Consciousness.......2007-06-14
I have read, and own, several previous books by Dr. Ramachandran and have fully enjoyed every one of them. This book is less intensely full of scientific jargon than his prior books, but is every bit as enjoyable. For those who haven't read much, or any, books on the fascinating workings of the human brain this just may be the book to start with! I can promise you'll be hooked on the subject.
He is a talented writer who makes a difficult subject available to the non-scientist without your ever feeling talked down to.
Buy this book and be ready to make plenty of room in the science section of your bookshelves!
Not as good as his other book.......2007-06-05
I purchased this book after reading and loving "Phantoms in the Brain," also by Dr. Ramachandran. I was sorely disappointed. This book stands on its own; if it weren't for "Phantoms" I would have to rate this higher. However, this is merely a watered-down version of his earlier work: most of the content is the same and there is less of it. "Phantoms in the Brain" is nearly twice the length and, being the older book, still costs a little less. They're both intensely fascinating, but there is no reason to buy this book. Buy "Phantoms in the Brain" instead.
Read Phantoms instead.......2007-05-11
I read Phantoms in the Brain by the same author and was wowed, so I bought this book and was sorely disappointed that it really really is a shorter, less interesting version of Phantoms in the Brain. Don't waste your time on this book just buy Phantoms in the Brain. I wish I had read the other reviews earlier that said this before I ordered it!
It's all in your mind.......2006-08-22
V.S. Ramachanchandran has a produced a wonderful book which delivers exactly what its title promises.
Through patients he's treated we learn about brain anatomy, various physical disfunctions what they say about human limits and overcoming them and why some people associate color with numbers and why that has anything important to say about humans generally.
Along the way, Ramachandran says more noteworthy things about art and why people are attracted to it than any philosophy course or supposedly "learned" treatese attempting to answer the question of "what is art."
What's more Ramachandran has skill with the spoken language so that his ideas are readily accessible to the layman yet still relevant to the specialist (who will no doubt enjoy seeing his field of study through another's eyes).
An excellent read; an excellent book; an excellent purchase!

Customer Reviews:
fun read.......2007-09-19
I really liked this series, It was a good read. I didn't think I would like it when I read the first book, but once I started reading, I wanted to finish the whole series.
I loved it!.......2007-03-09
Personally I don't really like to read so the books that I actually do are usually pretty good. I was afraid that I would not know what was going on since it was a sequel but I wasn't the least bit lost at all. This book was perfect it had so much going on and it kept you waiting to see what would happen next. I could not put this book down; I read it all within a week. Herbie Brennan did a wonderful job and I look forward to reading the first book. It had the perfect balance between action, romance, drama, a bit of horror. It had it all! It had such a wide variety of characters from little worms that lived inside your head, an actual human, fairies, and more.
Review for Purple Emperor.......2006-07-06
This book is as exciting and full of mystery, suspense, and fantasy just like Faerie Wars. I liked all the new, interesting characters in the Purple Emperor, but i think i liked the first book better, i'm not sure why, it just kinda left you wondering and i liked that. I did like how the Purple Emperor was based more in the faerie realm instead of the analogue world it drew you in more than the parts based in normal life.
disappointing.......2006-04-30
I read and enjoyed The Faerie Wars a few months ago, and so was excited to start the sequel when I came across it. My excitement waned as I got into the book, however. There were three things that particularly disappointed me.
Through most of the book, there are a number of subplots happening simultaneously which come together in the climax. Brennan breaks the subpolts up into small peices, telling about this one for a few pages and then that one for a few pages, and then this other one, and then back to the first one, and so on. It seems that he wants to create suspense and keep the reader engaged, however for me it just made the book awkward and choppy. I had some trouble keeping the plots straight and understanding why certain episodes were significant to the overall story. There are some that I still think are totally irrelevant.
I realize that this is a work of fantasy and not meant to be realistic or anything, but some of the things we encounter in the book are completely unbelievable. He introduces a whole new group of faeries, the forest faerie, who are very numerous, have advanced technology, and are skilled fighters. Where did these guys come from? How did they get so good at combat if they've been hiding in the forest and never fighting anyone? And how is it that they're so numerous and yet have never been detected? It just doesn't add up for me. It seemed a quick, cop-out way to get things done. Like he needed a force to take on the deamon army, so he made these guys come out of the woodwork.
Then there's the ending. I didn't appreciate the values that are condoned in the ending of the book. I'm not going to tell any interested readers exactly what happens except that the main characters, the "heroes," pull off a very significant act of deception in order to get their way. While it does end up leading to a happy ending, I can't accept that they got there by immoral means and got out of accepting responsibility for their actions.
So in general, I was didn't like this book a whole lot. I won't be reading the next sequel should there be one.
Action-Packed but Lacking as a Sequel ..........2006-04-24
In his sequel to 'Faerie Wars', Herbie Brennan offers up plenty of action, thrills, chills, and suspense, but 'The Purple Emperor' sadly does not stand up to the standards set by its prequel.
Pyrgus Malvae is about to be crowned Purple Emperor, and he is dreading every part of his new found power. All to suddenly, the body of the soon-to-be-burried former Purple Emperor, Pyrgus and Holly Blue's father, has been stolen and resurrected back to life by their old enemy, Black Hairstreak. Meanwhile, former characters are plotting their own schemes, as Jasper Chalkhill, the flamboyant spy for Hairstreak, is pulled out of jail and has a physchic wyrm inserted into his bottom (no joke) in order to help assasinate Pyrgus for Hairstreak. And also, the old demonologist Brimstone has been hiding out with his new, and very temporary, wife until Beleth makes him an offer he can't refuse. Eventually, all of these character's paths cross in a monumental battle of wits and danger.
Sounds confusing, but Brennan weaves the multi-plot strands relatively well. The story unfolds in short chapters, unlike its prequel, and the majority of the story is furiously-paced, almost too fast. The whole beginning was a blur, and Brennan rushed it way too quickly. The characters are so quickly thrown in the action, I felt as if I was on the sidelines watching instead of actually involved in the story. Brennan's own demise is the rushed pacing and how fast he tried to set up the plot and action, as it stopped him from forming the solidity of a good beginning and base for the remainder of the story. The faerie realm felt very empty as I was pulled along by the fast pace, but once you get past the bad beginning, the rest of the story is a action-packed adventure that leads to a shocking ending.
Bogged down by a rushed beginning, 'The Purple Emperor' eventually closes with a strong conclusion and I only recommend it to fans of the first book who like Brennan's use of suspense and action. Here's hoping the third book, 'Ruler of the Realm', returns to the qualities that made the first book enjoyable, yet believable, fantasy.

My 8-year-old loved it. Funny without being unkind. Laugh with, not at. Sure, there are some pranks, but essentially harmless. Also my 17-year-old loved it, and yes, my 42-year-old wife loved it. And I got a great deal of entertainment, also. Buy it and have fun!!

Two kids named George and Harold hypnotize their principal into thinking he is a superhero by using a "3-D hypno ring." When they don't follow the directions to a time machine they end up in an opposite world. Now they meet their doubles and have to stop them from taking over the world. Will George and Harold stop their doubles? Read the book and find out.
My opinion for this book is that it is really great. The author of this book, Dav Pilkey, writes very good fantasy books in my opinion.
I would recommend this book to kids from ages 7-12 because it isn't that interesting otherwise.

Captain Underpants And The Preposterous Plight Of The Purple Potty People.......2007-02-20
I purchased this series for my eight year old son and he loved them!
There is something about boys and "potty" humor that I will never understand, but these stories hold his attention and he is reading!
The language is innocent, not more grown up then I want him to be at eight and I think that the illustrations help the stories along for my son.
He loves them and I would tell any parent trying to find something their boys would read to try these books!

A Breath of Fresh Air!.......2007-10-11
The Message Bible brings a whole new comfort to the reading of the Word of God. The Word unfolds with new light and fresh wonder. I love this book.
Exactly what I was looking for..........2007-08-08
I have been using the Message version for about two years. It has really opened the scriptures up to me in new and fresh ways. To be able to read the Bible as it was intended to be read, in common conversational language, is a great blessing. My favorite para-phrase!
I love the size and style of this one. It easy to carry around and to work without looking like you are a bible-thumper carrying some huge black KJV Bible. The remix version is great as it gives more detailed verse number descriptions for when you want to refer to other versions and compare.
A great daily reader!!!
stylish.......2007-06-14
THIS IS NOT A GOOD BIBLE TO HAVE AS YOUR ONLY RESOURCE. I LIKE THE WORDING ON THE VERSES ABOUT GODS LOVE AND GRACE. BUT THE WORDING ABOUT GODS JUDGEMENTS ARE SEVEARLY DOWN PLAYED TO THE POINT WHERE YOU DONT GET AN ACCURATE VIEW OF GODS WORD. I RECOMMEND NASV, NIV, NKJ.
Very good bible!!!.......2007-05-26
It is a really nice bible for the price. It doesn't have religious look with gold pages. It also have life time warranty on its binding and cover by just mailing it back to company.
The kids love it!.......2007-05-07
I bought this bible as an extra because you can never have too many bibles. That sounds nuts, huh? Turns out a girl in our Youth Group didn't have a bible, and she loves it. The message is a great translation for kids to read the word of God and digest it.
