He's back! Adobe's already-powerful imaging editing software has just grown a whole lot more powerful, and best-selling author Scott Kelby (editor of Photoshop User magazine) has returned to unlock even more of its secrets. Using step-by-step instructions and nearly 700 full-color images, Scott reveals precisely how to achieve some of Photoshop Element 3's most closely guarded special effects. By the end of the volume you'll have learned more than 300 new techniques for using Adobe's affordable consumer-level software. Packed with creative ideas, layouts, and design techniques, the volume does more than just rehash masking, pixels, and file formats and resolution: It provides you with the Elements chops you need to unleash your own creativity.

4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2006-11-26

I like this book as a starting place to help with learning some of the ins & outs of Photoshop Elements (PSE) - I actually happen to be using v. 5. It is a bells & whistles book, not a general tutorial book for how to use all the features of PSE.

I just started digital scrapbooking about a month ago, so I wanted a few tricks for making my photos better and beginning to create some elements, so for me it has worked out very well. I've gotten a couple other books that ended up being too simplified and the results somewhat "cheesy", so I found this book more of a middle ground for a beginner who learns quickly - not too simplified, but not complicated.

2 out of 5 stars Typical Kelby.......2005-07-22

This is yet another book from the man who is trying to take over Photoshop with his "Photoshop Professionals" organization.

Someone should take Scott Kelby into a quiet room and tell him some home truths. The first one, in fact probably the only one, is that he's just NOT FUNNY.

If you want a second one, the most important word in the English Language is not one character long, usually expressed in upper case, and is the character that appears between H and J in the alphabet.

And here's one that might save people some money - if you see a neat technique in advertising, it is a good idea to remember it (cut out the page, if necessary) and try to reproduce it yourself. There are a number of "Down and Dirty tips" like this - the one I recall is the one using a watch.

In fact, the tips here are more Up and Clean than Down and Dirty. If you want your Photoshop work to be slightly more interesting (but not too interesting), this is the book for you.

This book bears all the hallmarks of a book done by several authors, none of which had too much interest in it. I don't know whether Mr. Kelby contributed every word in this book, but there are parts with altogether too much sophomore humor (and I'm doing it a favor rating it that high), along with mildly interesting techniques. The humor is something that was passe at the time of DOS for Dummies, and the only reason that I give this two stars is that someone can use the techniques.

However, the techniques shown are yawn-inspiring. There's little or nothing that will blow your socks off, and this book comes a long way behind the Elements One-Click Wow! book.

According to the blurb, this book shows you "Photoshop Element 3's most closely guarded special effects." If you think about this for a minute, why would Adobe want to guard the special effects you can make with its program? And why would Scott Kelby need to have the words in the title "Voices that Matter"?

If a book can't stand on its own merits, why should it need to be bumped up? And why can't the author put over his points without obscuring them with unfunny remarks?

Look elsewhere. This book is for the Windows version only (not that I care that much, because I use Windows). There are plenty of better books on Photoshop Elements techniques.

3 out of 5 stars Many Unanswered Questions.......2005-06-03

I read the book cover to cover while using it as a companion tutor to an on line dslr course. I found many of the steps not complete. I had basic questions on basic elements of PSE 3.0 and didn't find any mention of them in the book or index. I was left "wanting" for my answers on the basic of uses in Organizer and Editor.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Photoshop Elements 3 Book.......2005-05-14

Excellent Book! Full of useful information that is made simple by step by step insructions. Great information for someone who understands the basic tools of Photoshop, but wants to create more prfessional looking photos. Wonderful examples that inspire new ideas and twists on classic pictures! Highly Recommended!

2 out of 5 stars A need for photo organization before the bells and whistles.......2005-04-18

I am an Adobe fan. I have Adobe Album 2, Elements 3 and Photoshop CS. Using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II camera with my Epson 4000 Printer going through Photoshop CS is a marriage made in heaven. But first, I want to store and organize my photos in my own way. This I did with Album 2, 2nd Version, to the limits of its capability. Its limits, I can see are mostly overcome in Elements 3 and I want to transfer my Album 2 organization to Elements 3 with its much more sophisticaled capability. I have 5,000 photos. There is nothing in Mr. Kelby's book about organizing photos at all. His index is 4 pages long. Under the word "photos or photographs" there is nothing. Under the word "organizing" or "organization" there is nothing. Under the "word" albums, there is nothing.
Yet this is the first thing this Elements 3 Program wants to do is to collect all my "bmp's" and "jpegs" and drop them in one file for me to organize. With 5,000 photos, I don't want to go through this very time consuming procedure again. If there was some space spent on this first step, I could figure how to transfer my Adobe Album 2 photo organization to the expanded capability of Element 3. The organizational ability of Elements 3 is ignored. The other aspects elaborated on are much better done through Photoshop CS. The lack of explanation on the basics of photograph organization makes me feel this book is of little help.

Top 100 Simplified Tips and Tricks is a nice, user-friendly adjunct to one's digital camera's user manual. It gives simplified explanations with full color pages and LOTS of pictures to supplement the often compex instructions and explanations found in the user manual. The pictures REALLY help, and the explanations are easy to understand, so you don't have to be a rocket-scientist to take markedly better pictures. A definite must-have!

5 out of 5 stars top 100 simplified tips & tricks by g. georges.......2006-02-20

i am a true beginner at digital photography and editing. i have looked at many books, but by far this is the one that helps me the most. it answers many questions in a simple and straight forward way for a novice such as me. it makes this new experience for me a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars New Edition is better than ever.......2005-09-01

I just received the new edition of this book. I hestitated to buy it because I owned the previous edition and didn't know if this one would be worth the extra investment. I was not disappointed. This has been totally redesigned and is packed with lots of new techniques and killer photos. Very inspirational and easy to use. Hey...I guess I'm hooked.

5 out of 5 stars Quick & Easy - A Super Guide!.......2004-07-12

I just bought this book last night, and am half way through reading it already. It's an excellent book for the amateur to advanced photographer who hates to read lengthy dialog, but wants to learn some quick tips and tricks on how to improve their photography. Even applies to more advanced photographers - especially those who are coming off of "film" and going "digital".

It has tips and tricks for every aspect of digital photography -- from setting up your equipment, to taking better pics, to storing and printing them.

It assumes the reader has access to Photoshop Elements (as opposed to a complete version of Photoshop), which is nice. It has clear and high-quality photos to support each lesson. Most lessons are 2 pages (a couple are 4 pages), so it's a very quick and easy read. Love it!

4 out of 5 stars Good Tips.......2004-05-17

The only thing I didn't like about this book was that the first page of the photoshop section says "This section requires familiarity with basic Photoshop Elements commands; to learn these commands see "Teach Yourself VISUALLY Restoration and Retouching with Photoshop Elements" If you haven't read that book, this section might not make a lot of sense. It is full of great tips, ideas that are very helpful. It doesn't go into great depth on subject matter but is good for a beginner.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Essential Companion to iMovie3.......2003-07-29

As Erica says "iMovie can do a lot more than you might ever expect from a free product" Having spent a lifetime editing film and then video by the traditional methods I found computer editing with iMovie both a revelation and a revolution. You can use it as an easy way to put together family and holiday videos but as this book shows it has hidden power to allow you to make high quality productions.

Written in a clear and authoritative but friendly style it provides step by step guides to accomplish a wide range of visual and audio effects. The author comes up with a set of solutions based on her own practical experience. This is a hands on book written by someone who enjoys the challenge of pushing iMovie to the limits.

You can read it cover to cover and be impressed by the attractive layout and use of colour but keep it within reach of the Mac ready to provide the answer for any new effect you want to create not only with iMovie but also with Quicktime. As a generous extra there is a disc full of plug ins and other helpful software - some of it written specially by the author and not available elsewhere.

Erica's first book about iMovie helped me rescue a major project which had refused to open from the hard disc and the this one has a wealth of new material on how to exploit the added features in iMovie 3 and solve some of the issues it raises. If you use the software this book is essential to fully exploit iMovie 3

4 out of 5 stars More of the same...and that's a good thing!.......2003-07-17

In iMovie 2 Solutions, Erica Sadun gave us cool tricks with low (or no) cost additions to iMovie 2. Now iMovie 3 is out and the tips from the iMovie 2 book are....still working. Some of the same tricks show up in this new book, but that is expected with a program like iMovie. As I said about iMovie 2 Solutions, if you're looking for a basic iMovie how-to book, look elsewhere. That's not what this book is for. This book is going to show you how to use iMovie 3 and a few mostly inexpensive pieces of software to do the kinds of tricks that you would spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for high end DV movie editing software packages. The high end software might do it easier and maybe faster, but the learning curve, not to mention the cost, is so much higher. The new tricks are well worth the cost of this book. Ms Sadun writes very well. Clear and consise without talking down to her intended audience. All the tricks are laid out step by step, with examples shown not only in the book, but also on the very useful companion DVD. The software included on the DVD is also a nice bonus. If you're really brave, you can make your own iMovie plugins! Many very useful plugins are included to get you started, but this will whet your appitite for the huge assortment of practical (and some not so practical, but fun) world of iMovie plugins. Hit the search engine of your choice and type in "iMovie Plugins". OK, what software will you need to do these tricks? A graphics program like Adobe Photoshop Elements for less than 80 bucks (although you could also use any decent graphics program), and Apple's very own QuickTime Pro (the free regular QuickTime will not do) for [a few] measly bucks. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to go beyond iMovie's feature set without spending a fortune.

This beginners book on PhotoShop Elemements is clearly written with many useful examples. Unlike other books on this subject, the writer is a professional photographer concerned with preparing photographs for publication - and less about the casual amateur photographer.

I found the book useful and well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Magic.......2004-06-14

In Attack of the Killer Video Book, Mark Shulman and Hazlitt Krog, two veteran American filmmaker/writers who specialize in young people's film and video production, provide everything young people need to know to create their own masterpieces on video. Illustrated by artist Martha Newbigging's cartoons, the book stands out for a number of reasons, particularly the authors' ability to walk that fine line between making filmmaking seem "cool" to young readers while at the same time dispensing the kind of practical technical advice they need.

Shulman and Krog cover every imaginable aspect of moviemaking, including scriptwriting, choosing locations and costumes, shooting, and editing footage. What's more, they go beyond the technical details of production, providing excellent instructional material that teaches young readers how to brainstorm potential story ideas and how to promote their work and organize a premiere screening. Readers will benefit by the outstanding organization of the text into step-bystep thematic chunks - including assembling a production team, instructions for directors, handling and operating a camera - while at the same time enjoying the high-energy prose and lively illustrations.

Adults will value the book's underlying can-do theme, which shows how young people can create something of lasting value on their own while learning important lessons about creativity, team-building and seeing a big project through to completion. As a writer and organizer of film discussion groups for kids, this book is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Hopkins or Chung Ling Soo.......2007-10-13

MAGIC was originally published in the 1890s and is a compilation of articles drawn from different sources, especially Scientific American. And although Hopkins name is on it, it's thought that this was put together by Wm. Robinson. Robinson became known for his portrayal of Chinese Magician Chung Ling Soo. Chung was killed onstage doing the Bullet Catch.

So, is this a good book? No, it's GREAT. As a history of the craft of magic, it's priceless, no matter who really wrote it. Get it, it's worth it.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating--but obsolete.......2000-10-21

If you're a student of magic, technical theatre, or trick photography, this is an excellent historical text on how these things were done about 100 years ago. It's a fascinating period piece, and a limited amount of the material can be updated and applied to a modern setting, but much of the illusions it describes require gas lines, steam lines, and other non-standard stage accessories.

5 out of 5 stars An armchair read of special effects.......1999-08-27

While this book may not have direct application, it still remains on of my favorite titles in my magic library. It discusses how larger effects are accomplished, from temple doors that open automatically, to photographic illusions. The material is dated, but can be cleverly adapted for performances.

This book covers the history of film that many forget. It discusses the importance and influence that magicians had on film. Film began in their illusions as pictures were projected onto smoke etc.

Book Description

From the earliest days of the art form, when multiple exposures provided "evidence" of the spirit world, to today's computer-enhanced digital doctoring, photography has been fertile ground for fakery. Photo Fakery is the first book on the history of all types of photographic fakery and manipulation and shows how to detect these increasingly common practices.

Dino Brugioni, formerly one of the CIA's senior photo interpreters, presents hundreds of photographs that were contrived or altered, often succeeding greatly in their fakery by playing a part in history. Brugioni explains clearly, for the non-photographer, how these deceptions were accomplished and how to spot them. He also explores the benefits and dangers of doctored photos and the many problems raised for the legal profession. Profusely illustrated with examples never before seen by the general public, Photo Fakery is for anyone who wants to be a savvy media observer.

This was a well-written and fascinating book. I thought I would spend more time looking at the pictures than reading the text, but I was so enthralled, I read it all. I also learned a lot about photography by seeing how photos can be edited to tell a different story. It made me appreciate why photo contests generally don't even allow a person to crop an image. This was one of the books that was recommended by the photography class I was taking and I highly recommend it too.

5 out of 5 stars "Photos may tell 1001 lies".......2006-05-12

"Photo Fakery," by Dino A. Brugioni, VA, Brassey's, 1999, ISBN: 1-57488-166-3 (HC) 228 pgs. text plus 8 pg. Notes, 8 pg. Biblio., 7 pg. Index. 8 1/2" x 11"
CIA officer for 50 years & a founder of the CIA's National Photographic Center, Brugioni chronicles deception & manipulation of photographs used in fraud, deception & propaganda purposes for diverse reasons & exposes methods of photo fakery & the analytic methods used in their detection.

The book is exceedingly well-researched, soundly illustrated & authored for the middling, curious reader & does not require scientific background. It is not a "how to create fakery" book, but rather "how to detect fakery." I highly sanction this treatise that has no real counterpart aside from Wm. Mitchell's 1992 "The Reconfigured Eye." The book is timely, noting that digital imaging & Adobe's Photoshop (& other "paint" programs) have forever changed veracity of photographs currently "snapped" at the rate of 40 to 50 billion daily. It is conceivable the majority of pictures appearing in print are digitally altered, exceeding those which are not. Our concerns are largely with those images in which the truth or accuracy has been compromised.

5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful Book.......2003-01-17

People are generally aware about how facts can be distorted and misrepresented in the text and art media but tend to be less familiar with how easily photographs can be altered for the purposes of deception. In fact, many people give too much credibility to photographs because they assume that photographs always present scenes realistically. Mr. Brugioni shows not only how easily photographs are altered to distort the truth, he also conveys an idea of how widespread the practice of photo manipulation is in the modern media. I recommend this book strongly for people who are interested in media ethics or want to better understand the role of images in communication by governments, advertisers, and news organizations.

4 out of 5 stars don't believe everything you see.......2002-12-29

This book is fairly comprehensive (he even discusses morphing in film and video, along with the legal aspects of altering photographs) and absolutely fascinating, though I would have liked to see him go into more depth regarding UFOs and photos of anomalous creatures (there is only one photo of a stupid-looking "sea monster" when he could have had his pick from dozens of photos of Nessie, Yeti, aliens, etc). He also claims the infamous photo of Lee Harvey Oswald holding the rifle and pamphlets was not faked in any way (the author used to work for the CIA-- conspiracy theorists can make of that what they will). Definitely worth a read. ...

5 out of 5 stars Fasinating.......2001-07-21

This was very entertaining and caught my attention. It opened my eyes to a lot of tricks in photography that we tend to miss.

I think this is a book that all digital artists should read. It would show them what not to do.

Book Description

Adding ghostly images, transforming skin to fur, and creating stop-action photography are among the special effects digital photographers learn in this guide to manipulating a camera's conventional settings for unconventional and artistic effect. The camera itself provides the initial departure point from traditional photography as photographers are encouraged to use "incorrect" exposure settings, "poor" focus, and reflections to create striking and dramatic images. Instruction on popular digital imaging programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements, Kai's SuperGoo, and PhotoVista 3D provides photographers with the means to manipulate photographs further with creative filters that transform daytime shots into nighttime images, a library of facial components, and the ability to combine images to create a three-dimensional digital object. A section on printing both at home and at a lab includes simple tips for enhancing the impact of photographs on paper.

5 out of 5 stars tricky pix lots of fun.......2007-01-15

This book was a huge hit with a 4, 8, 9, & 10 year old this Christmas. Each of the kids rec'd digital cameras and the 9 year old this book. They played around with the different "poses" for hours Xmas morning and for days after. My daughter is the book owner and has been taking pictures with her friends too. I can't comment on the camera because we never used it - but I would suggest a digital camera so they can review the great shots instantly.

2 out of 5 stars not *that* clever.......2004-06-05

This was disappointing, compared to most Klutz books. It did not grab the attention of my budding-photographer eleven-year-old. The camera included was no better than a disposable one.

5 out of 5 stars Tricky Pix.......2001-12-31

The ideas are outstanding. Actually getting the pictures to come out that way take some work which was a great challenge for my son and I.
