This is not a new harmony of the Gospels. It is a "revision" of the time honored standard work by A T Robertson and John Broadus. What Thomas and Gundry have done (which they readily admit in the preface) is to "revise" the translation to the NIV, and the original notes and essays to their own Dispensational theology. I quote from page 6 & 7 "The second comparison lies in eschatological perspective. Occasionally Broadus and Robertson reflected the amillennial or postmillennial temperament of their times. The twentieth century has witnessed a surge of interest in the premillennial interpretation of Scripture. It is the persuasion of the revisers that a consistent grammatical-historical interpretation of the Bible inevitably leads to this latter view. For this reason several of the explanatory footnotes reflect a corresponding difference in perspective from the earlier editions."
Robertson and Broadus were both considered "consistent grammatical-historical" interpreters of scripture and they, just like many today, were not Dispensationalist. I think it sad to see their material misused in this way. If you are a serious student of the Bible and wish to form your own opinions of Eschatology stay away from this harmony. Or at least realize what you are getting before you spend your money on this book. I bought a copy of the original and find it much more enlightening and accurate.

An eye opener.......2003-10-15
I am currently reading through this book, which is really a combination of each of the gospel accounts in chronological order. So far the book has been very enlightening and has taught me more about Christ than I would have learned by reading one gospel at a time. There is something about reading each account side by side that really brings the stories to life, and making Jesus more tangible (at least in my mind). If you want to know more about Jesus, His disciples, and you want to grow closer to the Lord this is a great book to help with all of these things.
The commentary is excellent. For example, did you realize that Jesus began to teach in parables late in His ministry, and only after many people had turned against Him?
One other thing that I really like about this book is that every time an old testament prophecy is fulfilled in the new testament it gives the old testament reference right there in the text. I know that many Bibles note this, but they use superscript marks and it's easy to read over them, so I like the references in the reading, that way I don't miss anything.
An excellent resource for studying the life of Jesus........1999-01-05
This helpful book arranges the four gospels in parallel columns, following the life of Jesus. It is a very helpful resource for anyone desiring to know what Jesus said and did in chronological order. Also, the book provides excellent essays and notes about various interesting and controversial issues involved in studying Jesus' life. It uses the New International Version in the text, making it available to all English readers. I use this book as an important part of the course I teach to ministerial students on the life of Jesus.

You know, one of the early Christians attempted to harmonize the four gospels. His text was lost to history? Why? Because God gave us four DIFFERENT gospels for a reason! The Church has always rejected harmonizations. Don't buy this one.
Intriguing Way of Seeing Jesus in Fuller Dimension.......2005-07-12
I probably read the Gospels four times a year; so I'm very familiar with the details. This book added a lot to my perspective and understanding of Jesus's earthly ministry by filling in gaps by the overlapping of the records. His ministry had several distinct shifts with regard to His public and private life which became clear. The scholarly notes were also very helpful. Believe it or not I went through this book in less than two weeks (not because it is short, it has the entire text of M,M, L, J but ) because it was so interesting.
some errors in parallelism.......2003-10-27
This parallel uses the NASB study bible notes and comments. It is basically very good except for some paralleling. The authors claim chronology parallelism only, but there are some cases of topic parallelism. One example is claiming that the sermon on the mount and the sermon on the plane are the same event.
Parallel Gospels are very good for lay readers. You can use this one as long as you do not take as a Gospel truth (sorry for the pun) that the paralled passages are always identical events.
Valuable tool for all students/readers of the Bible.......2002-07-18
The book is well-coordinated and provides excellent footnotes which further amplify and clarify the Scripture in its historical/theological context. This edition, in the New American Standard Version, is easy to read, although I personally prefer the elegance of the King James Version (albeit that version does contain some obsolete and obscure words). It is wonderful to be able to compare the accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John side-by-side! I had a similar scholarly volume during my college days but somehow it and I parted company over the years (My old edition had a _sewn_ binding. Unfortunately, this edition has glued-in pages -- but the book should endure fairly well with reasonable care).
You won't go wrong with this fine reference. It is certainly helpful to anyone who desires a fuller understanding and appreciation of the New Testament, especially regarding the life and sayings of Jesus.
Excellent chronology of Jesus' life.......2002-01-03
This harmony of the gospels was recommended to me by a retired professor from Taylor University. I found the arrangement of material very defensible and very well organized. The essays at the end of the book give a good introduction for the uninitiated in fundamental problems in modern "criticism". Useful information on dating of events in the gospel narratives are also provided. I take exception to the critic who claimed that "The actual date of Christ's birth and death is written in stone and correlated by the Jubilee records." This view is held by a tiny minority, some of whom, to be charitable, have dubious academic credentials. On the other hand, both Thomas and Gundry, have published a number useful pieces of scholarship many of which can be purchased through Amazon.
I found the most obvious thing to jump out at me was the development of the controversies between Jesus and the Jewish leaders, and between Jesus and the village of Capernaum. Without some form of chronological guide it can be difficult to see the connections between events during Jesus' life. I found this to be the most helpful aspect of reading Thomas and Gundry's Harmony.

I loved using this book. I had never used a harmony before and found it absolutely wonderful. It was amazing how much more you begin to understand when you can read and compare almost simultaneously. I learned so much from this text, I would recommend it to anyone studying the Gospels.

This volume represents the best effort by NT scholar Kurt Aland to arrange in chronological order the events recorded in the Gospels. Though this would in the hands of any scholar involve some degree of interpretation, the order here is largely based on that of the Gospel of Mark, which is generally thought to have provided much of the chronology for the writers of Matthew and Luke.
If one wants to gain the best possible understanding of the gospels as a whole and of the uniqueness of each individual gospel, a tool such as this is invaluable. One could search out parallel passages in each gospel in one's own Bible, but it is much easier to use a tool such as this. Sometimes the differences are minor, sometimes more substantial. Reading through the gospels in this edition will also highlight how different Luke, with its emphasis on the poor and constant critique of the wealthy, is from Matthew and Mark, or John from the other three.
The translation used is the Revised Standard Version, which is widely acknowledged to be one of the most accurate. Many fundamentalists dislike it because of the way it translates some portions of the Old Testament that in the KJV had been translated in a way to prefigure the New Testament, but even fundamentalists have not questioned the accuracy of the NT translation. Footnotes allude to some variants among the Greek manuscripts, while end material includes a helpful outline of the contents of the four gospels and an index of gospel passages.
A word about the English only versus the Greek-English. If you are a very serious student of the NT with facility in Greek, you should get the twin language version. My own Greek is very rusty and I found the very large Greek-English edition to be unwieldy and hard to use. Even if you own the Greek-English edition, I would recommend the English only edition. It is comparatively inexpensive and I find it far easier to use in every way. But like I said, my Greek at this point of my life is pretty weak. I retain enough to follow a discussion of Greek terms in commentaries, but not enough to read on my own.
After a couple of good translations of the Bible, a good Bible dictionary, and a Bible atlas, this is the New Testament tool that I most frequently use and most highly recommend.

I was confused when looking for the greek and english version of this book because Amazon carries both the greek and english version plus the english only version. However, the reviews for the two books are exactly the same. The greek and english version has the ISBN# 3438054051 and is 700+ pages, where the english only version has a different ISBN# is has half the number of pages. Hope this helps you in your buying and saves you the 15 minutes I lost scratching my head.

Yes, this is a highly specialized, scholarly, and esoteric collection but it contains the translated writings of philosophers of music not easily available. Not even the huge "Strunk's Source Readings (1998)" has the information which Godwin has collected and translated: Nicomachus, Pliny, Ptolemy, Kepler, Fludd; Arab writers Al-Safa, Al-Katib; the kabalist Ibn Latif. If you are a fan of Godwin's research as I am, these source readings will fill in the gaps in the history of music which is not taught. It is, however, a reference book first and foremost.

I was looking for a harmony of the gospel accounts and this was recommended to me. What an AMAZING effort Daniel has put forth. I call it the "golden thread" but its more of a bold-font that connects and weaves the verses together. This interweaving is done very insightfully and is most noticeable when all 4 accounts tell the same story, but use different or enhanced definitions as in, for example, the transfiguration. Very respectable work. This has helped me and some of my friends SO much. A MUST HAVE TO ANY WHO ONLY COLLECT QUALITY CHRISTIAN LITERATURE!!!!

Each event of all the four Gospels is printed side-by-side in columns with the continuity of the narratives printed in bold type so that the whole story comes alive, giving the complete narrative from beginning to end as it unfolds.
I have owned this book for over 12 years and I'm still rereading it all the time. It never gets old. It's great for devotionals, for study or for leisure reading.
Great tool for a study of the Gospels!.......2002-12-29
This is a wonderful tool when studying the Gospel's account of the life of Christ. The author (or should I say editor/compiler?) arranges the texts in harmony, but also includes approximate dates of when the events took place. Some are critical of this approach, wondering how Mr. Daniel came up with the method of dating the events. Mr. Daniel asserts that the method is by no means difinitive. However, by following the feasts and seasons mentioned in the Gospel texts, he does leave us with useful benchmarks as to when these events took place. There are also useful comments about events like the cleansing of the temple. Were there two such events or only one? Mr. Daniel begs the question, then gives his view in the footnotes. This is a great book to use in a long Bible study on the life of Christ - with the emphasis on long. Our care group is currently working our way through the book . . . it's taken us a year and a half, and we're just now half way through! Take your time . . . learn all you can about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!
A Practical Addition to Any Scholar's Library.......2001-07-21
I used this book during our study of the book of Matthew. Since it is helpful to read the other gospels in order to maximize understanding, the format of this book was perfect. The gospels are printed side-by-side whenever they cover the same illustration so the scholar can make comparisons, achieve clarity, and notice key repetitions. One very useful aspect is that the book has a running story in which the scripture is highlighted, regardless of which gospel, so that the reader following the highlighted text can read the full story of the ministry of Jesus with the maximum amount of detail and with improved chronology.

I am a musician and have played professionally. Now, I work in the psychology field, but I have a good education in science including physics. I think this qualifies me to speak about the merits of this very fine book.
This book differs from most other musical theory books in that it encourages you to experience how music evolved and harmony grew out of the natural harmonics that occur in strings and other instruments. It gives you the theory and some of the physcis, but must importantly it provides exercises to give you the FELT SENSE of what each concept corresponds to. This is both at the emotional and somatic levels.
This is a very natural way to learn and embody harmony. It makes use of chanting intervals with a string drone or note from an instrument or tuning fork. It teaches you how to listen for harmonics and explains how these harmonics naturally lead to the contruction of certain chords and scales. It is really a "ground up" approach as one reviewer said and an eye opener even for most musicians.
The book encouraged the use of Indian syllables for the musical exercises, which was a bit difficult for me. However, the ideas behind the exercises were great and could be converted to do, re, mi, fa, so, la, di, do. I must confess, however, that at times this was a bit of an annoyance, but totally forgivable given what I took away from this book!
Harmonic Experience changed my life! .......2007-02-16
Harmonic Experience has proven to be as valuable of an education as my four years at a music conservatory. But this is also easily accessible to all musicians, not just professionals! The book is written in clear English and it feels like Mathieu is in the room with you.
I'm delighted to find some insight into some musical contradictions that I frequently think about, but have never reconciled. Harmonic series vs. major and minor tonality? just intonation vs. equal temperament? western harmony vs. eastern music? It's beautiful to see a unified perspective that embraces acoustics, emotion, intuition, knowledge and many musical traditions. My approach to intonation has also changed for the better!

I have studied music, including theory, for thirty years, and nothing has expanded my understanding (and perception!) of music as much as the information in this book.
I have studied music with the author of this book -- he's a great writer about music and an even better teacher! I know that this work is the result of a lifetime of profound consideration of what is at the very heart of the musical experience, and of why music affects us as it does. W. A. Mathieu's highly intelligent exposition is a great gift to all who wish to deepen their understanding of music.

Ecactly the kind of Ecological thinking we DO NOT need.......2006-07-22
Utilitarian to boot - this book is exactly the kind of ecological thinking that will do nothing but further the culture of control and domination that is destroying what's left of the world's wilderness.
The essential message of the book is that humanity needs to control and dominate nature more, not less, in order to save it. This is progressive humanistic delusion at its worst.
Botkin's "new ecology" discounts what he calls the "old" theories of interconnection, balance, and cooperation and argues in favor of an ecology that describes a disconnected, unbalanced, opportunistic and fundamentally disordered and chaotic natural world.
Thomas Hobbes would be proud!
But wait, there's more:
Discordant Harmonies was awarded the Mitchell International Prize for Sustainable Development in 1991. The Mitchell prize was established by George P. Mitchell, a Houston Texas based billionaire who made his fortune in Petroleum and Natural Gas development.
A quick study of the Mitchell Center for Sustainable Development reveals that it is funded by some of the world's most ecologically destructive corporate entities including: Enron, Ford, Shell Oil, Texaco and the World Bank.
As if that's not enough to reveal the agenda behind the Mitchell Center, one of the projects of the Center was to help the World Bank "relocate" the indigenous people whose land it flooded by financing an enormous dam project in the Brazilian state of Ceará.
With supporters like these, it should be obvious that Botkin is much more concerned with the "development" of wilderness than he is with its preservation.
Unfortuantely, this book has been highly influential for many environmental historians and has inspired many
anti-environmental and anti-indigenous books and papers.
One example is the book "The Destruction of the Bison." In this book the author, Andrew Isenberg, argues (contrary to massive ammounts of primary historical sources) that it was the actions of The Plains Tribes (not the White colonists) that caused the Buffalo to nearly go extinct; a disgusting example of blaming the victim for the actions of the oppressor.
Botkin's book is dangerous - a tool of the dominant culture.
Read this book? Yes - but read it with extreem skepticism.
An important and valuable alternative.......2004-01-10
I wish this book had been written about 15 years earlier & I wish it was currently read by a wider audience. This is a well written book in which Botkin does an excellent job at articulating some of the troubling aspects of ecological theory as they move out into the world of policy, conservation, and belief. Like many of us Botkin was obviously raised in the academic environment of "equilibrium models" or "Balance of Nature" ideologies, and like some of us he found that what he actually saw in the field didn't really match up with what the theoreticians on the one hand and the hard-core "environmentalists" on the other were saying we had to believe. Botkin recognizes and revels in the complexities of the natural world and asks some difficult questions about the role that theory plays in shaping our overall perceptions. Anybody interested in conservation, land-use, or applied ecology would do well to spend some time with this book. The only reason that I don't give it 5 stars is that I wish that Botkin had gone a little farther -one gets the sense throughout that he has seen a promised land of a "New Ecology" but he keeps drawing back, he knows that there are fatal flaws in much ecological rhetoric, but he can't quite bring himself to say "away with this nonsense". Other than that, if there was one semi-popular ecology book that I would want folks to read, this would probably be a top candidate.
Environmentalism and Pragmatism.......2001-09-30
I liked this book. It was a bit difficult to get through at first. I started the book and put it down for a few months, in chapter 3. But I picked it up again and read it all the way through. Botkin (the author) writes repeatedly about a new way of thinking that incorporates both environmental awareness and the need not to go too far in our concern about the environment. He discusses how the movement of environmentalism is basically operating on false principles, just as our mainstream industrial ways of thinking are perpretrating untold destruction of the natural world.
Botkin talks about the need for compromise, and specifically the need to think of nature in a new way. This new way that he iterates is the recognition of nature as a chaotic system. It is not constant, it is not irreversible (in some ways), and populations fluctuate under certain circumstances.
He describes how we need a new kind of ecologist. How we need people to study the animals and the ecosystems they inhabit with the idea of chaos in mind. But not complete chaos, there is structure to nature, but it is not formalized, nor is it constant. It is changing patterns that never repeat themselves, I guess Botkin might say, more eloquently than I no doubt.
He has a lengthy discussion about the role of religion in this book, which I found interesting. He even talks about the GAIA theory. Botkin re-iterates his points on numerous occasions, to the point that you almost get sick to hear them again. But he drives the point home, and his points are valid, and his view of nature, based on his own experiments is enlightening, scientific, and refreshing.
Crowing into the Winds.......2001-05-15
First, let me say that this is a very good book, and that my comments are only meant as a cautionary note. Second, Botkin does know his "stuff" when it come to understanding ecological applications, theories, and the use of metaphors. This book was a useful, popular, corrective to the vast number of misunderstood ecological concepts at the time of its publication. That said, however, Botkin is also like a rooster: he crows too loudly, every morning. By page 38, I was already tired of his "this requires a new view and understanding of nature" which had been stated at least a dozen times before said page. Perhaps some readers will need this prose "boot to the head" reminder. Many readers will find this irritating. He is very much preaching to the choir as well. Changes in Ecology and parallel fields (Conservation Biology, Physical Geography, etc...) had already understood the past mistakes of such concepts as "equilibrium" (static) and "climax community." Botkin was about ten to fifteen years too late in writing Discordant Ecologies. Keep that in mind as you read it. If you start saying "Aha!" a lot just remember that others have already said this for decades, and that the corrective suggestions that Botkin produces have already been incorporated in the vast variety of ecological fields he discusses. This is a great book to use in a history of science, history of ecology, or biogeography class. It will also be useful to a lay audience, unfamiliar with the last 50 years or so of ecological literature. It is also rather easy to read in one sitting.

A Faulty Premise.......2007-02-21
I'm sure my point of view won't be popular in this forum but the author needs to make the point that what would be MOST beneficial to the children is to forego remarriage until all the kids are grown. Coming from a blended family myself, I must conclude that there is no valid reason to put the kids through "wisdom through the pain". I had a miserable childhood in a blended family but setting that aside, there is NOTHING Biblical about revolving spouses through the household.

I can't think of a better book to put into the hands of relatives or friends that are intertwined in a blended family position. It's honesty and encouragement make it a MUST have.
I believe that this is a book that will benefit the entire family.
Packed with encouragement, possiblities, and truth. It's wonderful to see a book finally written with a biblical point of view on this subject. This author nailed it! This subject is a "touchy" one and yet MUST be discussed in order for all families to heal and unite!
I would highly recommend this book & workbook to all that are in blended situations like us.

after reading this book i came away with a definite feeling the author has had her own personal experiences with a blended family. She speaks from a point of her pain caused by her divorce and remarriage. seven children were involved her, his, and theirs. WOW! every situation you can imagine was encountered and experienced. i found there experience something we all can learn from, without the first hand experience of our own. Thank you Lord for using Maxine as your minister in this area of relationships that is so needed today.
