Customer Reviews:
Outstanding for producing and publishing Flash video for both videographers and programmers.......2007-06-22
This is an excellently mastered book. The writing style is clear. The step by step examples are appropriately illustrated. There is source video and a plentiful supply of links for needs. The illustrations are appropriate and carefully selected for the key points.
If you are a FMS (Flash Media Server) administrator or programmer, you will find answers to those user inquiries why their video looks poorly. You will have intelligent responses and tools to analyze the problems likely caused by the capture and prepartion of the video.
For videographers, this is your bible on how to capture video for Flash.
For video editors, this is your bible on how to prepare and compress the files.
For newbies to Flash video, you have the soup to nuts book that breaks it down into nice chunks with examples.
Very impressive part of the text is that many assertions are supported with research from many major video publishing entities.
Finally there is a thread throughout the book that provides the market and industry information to help you assess your choice of Flash video as a web video platform.
You will learn the specific steps in major digital video software packages such as Adobe Premier and Final Cut to fix issues.
You can learn how to set-up a recording set with the correct lighting that will be best for Flash video format.
You can learn to install the Flash Media Server (free) and use it and not be a programmer, but willing to download example files needed. Or if you are interested in programming FMS, this gets you started.
A Great Start for online Video.......2007-05-26
The Hands-On Guide to Flash Video if full of good information for anyone interested in streaming video on the Web. For those interested in using streaming video for anything from professional level videos to those who just want to get something on YouTube, this book is a gem. Ranging from those who know absolutely nothing about Web video to those, like myself who need to learn more about taking videos and some of the technical characteristics of digital video, such as interlacing, you'll find this book invaluable.
The 19 chapters are written in a friendly and accessible style covering 1) Creating video, 2) Preparing video for the Web, and 3) working with Flash, including a clear introduction to Flash Media Server. Having worked with Flash Media Server (FMS) since it's inception, I have found that one of the best tricks for saving on bandwidth is good lighting and good sound, both of which are covered in this book. Likewise, for those new to streaming video, you will find how to set up a progressive download that you can set up on your hosting server without having to use FMS if you choose.
Among the many other topics I found revealing are the following:
1. Chroma keying - removing parts of a background so that any background can be inserted. Best known for weather reports on TV.
2. Cue points - adding triggers in the video that can be used as events. Cue points are very useful for adding information,
3. Interlacing and Deinterlacing in video files
4. Decision-making in setting video parameters
5. Optimizing light and sound for streaming video
An area that is in need of serious help is provided by the introduction to Flash Media Server. This will help in developing FMS2 applications for those who are new to open socket server technology. So for newbies to FMS, this will come as a welcome addition.
One of the interesting (and I think correct) decisions the authors made was to use the Flash CS3 platform with ActionScript 2.0 instead of ActionScript 3.0. Here's why. It will be at least a year or so before a significant number of users will have the Flash 9 plug-in for their browsers. Yesterday I bought a new iMac, and the Safari browser that comes with the Flash plug-in is still using Flash 8. (I found that out when I tried to play one of my apps built with AS 3.0.) What's important is that On2's VP6 technology started in Flash 8. So, no one is missing a significant video element using ActionScript 2.0 as would be the case with Flash 7 or earlier. [...]

Building Database Driven Flash Applications
ASIN: 0764535986 |
Book Description
Server-Side Flash: Scripts, Databases, and Dynamic Development fills an important gap in the Flash book market. With the emergence of e-commerce, no Web site is complete without a back end because the back end is the virtual sales connection. Likewise, complex games are dependent on access to huge sets of data that can be sent in small packages, but getting them in and out of Flash requires knowing how the data can be generated in Flash, how it can be sent out to the servers and how it gets information back from the servers and integrates it into the ongoing game.
While every book on Flash recognizes this new capacity to some extent, none of them have really showed developers how to get the data into and out of Flash and use it effectively. Server-Side Flash gives developers the tools to fully utilize Flash's capacity to communicate with the server side of the Web. PHP/MySQL have over half a million users, ASP has at least as many, and just about every professional Web page now contains at least some JavaScript. Find out how Flash communicates with these other languages and servers with coverage of the use of Macromedia's powerful database Flash product, Generator, and put its use in context with other Flash database techniques and applications.

Note: Book is about Flash 5, not FlashMX or Flash Remoting.......2003-01-30
This isn't a criticism of the book, but pay attention that it's from 2001 and covers Flash 5, NOT the latest Flash MX and its available Flash Remoting technology which offers far easier server-side integration.
Still, the info in the book still has value today to those who have not yet bought Flash MX. Indeed, even if you have Flash Mx, if your server is Perl, PHP, CF5, etc, then the approaches here will work since the new Flash Remoting only works on CFMX, ASP.NET, and select J2EE platforms.
Then again, MX users who do get the book should check out the newer LoadVars object as an alternative to the older but still supported LoadVariables. The approach to processing XML is also vastly improved in MX.
Of course, the book can't be faulted for having come out prior to MX. It's just that since the title doesn't say Flash 5, if you buy the book thinking it's about the latest and greatest ways of doing Flash/server integration, you'd likely be disappointed. Just offering this as a caution.
At Last , a book even a designer can understand........2002-11-23
As a graphics person, I've tried for months to understand scripting and databases with no success, I was just about to throw in the towel and literally go back to the drawing board when I found this book. The authors make these subjects easy to understand and the tutorials are excellent for bridging the graphic person's need to see the concepts in action. I've never written a review before, but this book has finally made me understand and given me the tools to move forward.
A sparse overview.......2002-05-27
When I buy a book, I want a little depth. This book is a decent summary of the Flash backend, but it's nothing you can't readily find on the web. I HIGHLY recommend a more specific approach--e.g Foundation PHP for Flash by Webster .
A complete and easy steps book.......2002-05-16
This book is awesome; it explains how to use Flash integration with the most common used server-side programming languages (PHP, ASP and Perl)...
All separated by parts, and it explains some of the functions and methods of the programming languages, just for letting the reader who doesn't deal with certain server-side languages more confortable to understand it.
Really good book, it solved all my problems with database and server integration with Flash.
Absolutely Brilliant!.......2002-04-19
A massive treasure trove of information that has just saved me countless hours of messing around with Flash. I've read through the first 5 chapters and went through the included examples and that alone has been enough to make me feel comfortable selling backend integration to my clients now, and being able to deliver a Flash site that does more than just look and sound good. There's no ColdFusion here but at five grand for Cold Fusion Sevrver, I'll take the PHP/SQL,ASP,and Perl solutions detailed in this book any day of the week over a book trying to sell me on CF.
I've got Flash MX too and the data transfer and handling model is still the same - you've got to know how Flash, the server, and the browser all integrate in the process, and this book puts all that knowledge well in hand. Thank you Sanders and Winstaley.

Bad, poor, and worst.......2005-06-16
Got this book for free from a friend.Hmm..I wondered why he gave me the book for free.Didn't know until one of my current research's requirements is Flash Comm Server MX.Flipped through the book and I'd have to say:Ewwww..programmers...stay away from this book!!!!It's not worth your money.
This book really good for ... CTO.......2005-01-25
Yeah, that's right, CTO only need to know what the FlashComm can do, how they do, but doesn't really need to get dirty like all the programmers out there. So if you are CTO go and get this book, if you want to get dirty with FlashComm then stay away from this book. If you want to buy this book in "mint" condition, please contact me (vht@rocketmail.com), I will place this book on ebay for just 10USD.
this is not a good enough book for me.......2004-12-28
i have a few points that may be valuable for those who are looking for really professional flashcom books:
1. the example files that come from this book's website work very poorly due to lack of programming considerations within the book itself. some applications fail to run on the second run because something is wrong with the programming used on the flashcom side or client-side, and the applications simply won't start unless u reload the applications from the server.
2. the book does not go thoroughly enough with flashcom applications such as user management in a video conference, and server-side scripts that are required for handling issues such as user log on/off, userid, etc.
3. although the book goes to teach real life solutions, but it barely touches the core concept of flashcom applications. i can only comment that this book is on the rim of a glass.
i hope my points will be helpful for those who are looking for a really good flashcom books...
Programming Indeed.......2003-11-25
Maybe I'm not a typical FlashCom user as far a programming background is concerned. I'm a Java programmer with a little experience in Flash. I don't write reviews because I don't believe most of the ones I read anyway and this one is simply in response to one of this book that was factually inaccurate.
I've looked at 2 or 3 books that have some information about FlashCom, and this is the best by far. The reason I like this book is because it is pure programming. It contains no FlashCom components at all. Period. I have no idea why a reviewer would say otherwise. (Maybe he's confused this book with another book.)
Coming from Java, I thought FlashCom would be a piece of cake. It is not (despite what a favorable review claims). You need to coordinate ActionScript, Client-side ActionScript and Server-side ActionScript. I liked the real-world examples in this book and each of the five applications brought together the different versions of ActionScript. The authors used procedural programming rather than OOP. However, in going over the code (and adding my own changes)it is not poorly structured.
I am not a big fan of this book's format. It goes through the details of dealing with clients, which in my work, I avoid. (We have reps that do that.) I wish that space had been used for more scripts and apps. However, the processes described are real and people who like that kind of stuff will like the book.
Like I said, THIS BOOKS CONTAINS NO FlashCom components, and I'd hate to see it passed over because of a wildly inaccurate review.
As a programmer, I thought this book was awful.......2003-11-25
I researched a few books online covering FCS and was sold on this one after reading the high reviews. I purchased the book and went through the entire thing in about an hour and gained nothing more than what I have learned from the Macromedia documentation and online resource center. NOTE: I was going into this expecting to learn more about how Flash and Flash Comm Server work together to better code applications between them. This book shows a few simple examples of how to use the built-in components. I strongly recommend NOT buying this book. I was was surprised to see all the high ratings when I came back to add my review, so be sure to read those as I am one of the few that is dissatisfied with this book.

not for programmers.......2006-12-05
This book is good for getting the basics on flash communication server, and for using the pre-installed UI components, but does not go into detail on how to program custom applications, they pretty much expect you to use the pre-installed UI components, which is pretty crappy.
I highly recommend getting the O'Reilly book instead, I just picked it up and its WAYYYYYYYYYY better. It's called "programming flash communication server".
Best Book Ever Written on This Subject, I have purchased 10 of them.......2006-04-30
This is absolutely the best book ever written on this subject. Very understandable, has great examples geared towards educational use. Best approach to application building on the topic. So why is Kevin not getting better reviews. His book hit at the transition to actionscript 2, so some of his code examples will not run in 2 since letter case is not strictly adhered to. In addition, towards the end of the book some of the code examples need rework (I have done that), and guess what not all the code in Brian Lesser's book works either. This is the book that got me going and without it I would not have made it this far. Thanks Kevin for your work on this book!
If you are serious about Flash Com, you will buy every book you can get your hands on (and right now there are only 3 of them). This is the best one for a beginner/intermediate flash programmer creating educational applications. I strongly recommend it! Note: (last time I checked) The book code no longer exists on his companion website.
Stay away from this one..........2005-06-16
It's not a good book. Its exercises are full with errors.Plus its website companion is no longer accessable.I wonder why...really wasted my money!!
This book is required for serious FlashCom developers.......2004-10-10
All I can say is that I totally agree with Kevin Towes. Anyone who feels that there is another book out at the moment that is better than this could be the reason why there aren't any inspirational FlashCom work out there. This is the foundation. Nothing else compares with it. Forget about the typos and work to make the projects in the book work for you. I have, so there is no excuse. Great work Kevin!
Terrible Terrible Terrible.......2004-03-09
Don't believe the 5-star hype above about this book. I bought this book since it was the *only* source on flashcom and unfortunatly it currently still is. The code and examples presented are very rocky, full of errors and difficult to understand. I just about gotten half way through the book and I am utterly disgusted. Even though it may fill in a few blanks about flashcom, the fustration, confusion and frankly the price of the book is just not worth it.
I feel foolish as I figured since I am a 7 year veteran of Flash and have extensive programming experience that I could hack through this book even though it had poor reviews. I thought perhaps it may be of some value to my study of flashcom. Boy was I wrong, its not even a decent reference.
Don't support incompetent authors/publishers by shelling out your money for this one.
