Karen Katz is great!.......2007-10-03
All of Karen Katz's books are great and this is one of the best ones. Grandma and daughter love to read this book, over and over!!! Just a great book for over 1 children. Pretty durable too! Would recommend for any grandma and grandchild combo!
This is a deeper book than you'd think........2007-08-31
My 3 year old granddaughter first introduced this book to me while I was at her house for a visit awaiting the birth of her new little sister. My first thought was, "well it's a board book so it'll be too simple for it to be good"... I read it the first night at bedtime, then the second night, then the third night and it continued on for the entire month I was there! LOL....sure we both knew it by heart very quickly and would read it out loud together, but that was half the fun. I'd do funny voices when I read it and sometimes changed a few of the words to kind of mix it up...But she enjoyed it so very much EVERY time. When I got back to the state where I live, I bought my own copy (just because I'm a kid at heart and I wanted to have something tangible of those beautiful reading memories with her.) I was further rewarded one day when she was having a hard time taking her afternoon nap. When my daughter called, I asked if I could talk to my little "Peanut"...I told her to go get her book and I would read it to her and she had to follow along and open all the little flaps. She did of course and she giggled the whole way through as if it were the first time she was hearing it. It was another priceless moment for this grandma...and she didn't have any trouble going down for her nap after that either. It's amazing what will capture a little ones attention. Sometimes we adults make things too complicated. As for me, I love to see things through the eyes of a child.
Grandma and Me.......2007-07-31
This book too came in excellent condition and in record time. Thank you, my children enjoy reading this book over and over.
Great little book!.......2007-07-21
My granddaughter loves leafing thru this book with me. Lot of look under the tabs for 'surprises'. Well illustrated. Highly recommend.
My toddler loves it.......2007-05-14
She bores easily, but she loves this little book. she has had it for a couple of months, and she's still interested in it. She's 19 months and change now.

Customer Reviews:
Wednesday Surprise by Katherine G.......2007-03-21
! The Wednesday Surprise !
Everything was dark and then all of a sudden
SUPRISE! If you like surprises I suggest you read this
book. This story takes place in a little girl, Anna's house.
The characters are Anna, Grandma, Dad, and Mom. Anna
and her grandma spent a long time on a surprise for
Anna's dad. Everyone helps get ready for dad's surprise
party except Anna's dad. This book is a good book for
people who like surprises and cliff hangers! Donald Carrick
has very colorful paintings to help the reader know what is
going on in the story. The message of this story is when
you work hard you can make things happen! I think this
book is for people from 7-12 years old. So how about you
go snuggle up and plan a surprise for someone!

The Wednesday Surprise.......2005-09-24
I am a reading specialist in a middle school with a large population of second language learners and I love reading this book to my reading students. They are always so surprised that the grandmother is learning to read. It shows them that you are never too old to learn!
Annie Loves to Read with Grandma.......2004-01-30
Do you have a secret? Annie had a really big secret with Grandma who comes on the bus to Annie's home. In the book The Wednesday Surprise, written by Eve Bunting, Grandma cooks hot dogs, eats ice cream, and reads with Annie. Every Wednesday they have fun together. They want to have a birthday party for Annie's dad. First they want to read more books.
I liked this book because Annie read with Grandma. It is funny and sweet. I had fun reading this. The only part that I didn't care for is the length of the book.
The book, I think is a four star rating, because it was good but it was not wonderful.
The Wednesday Surprise.......2003-07-01
Annas dad was working. He is a truk worker. He was going to come in time for his birthday.Anna and her grandma where making a BIG surprise.Do you think dad is going to like the surprise?I wonder what the surprise is going to be? I like this book because it remainds me of a surprise of my own life.I felt so happy when my teacher Miss.Aubry read this book. I recommend this book to everybody that likes surprises.
Wonderful Story For Grandchildren and Families.......2003-05-09
This is a great book to read to children while asking them what they think the surprise is. There is a lot of visualization in this book that makes for thoughtful reading, as well as a delightful ending that leads to much discussion. A "requirement" for all libraries at home or school.

Book Description
Kenyon loves to listen to his grandmother's stories almost as much as he loves to play baseball. He'd like Little Dolly to designate him the next Keeper of the family lore, but she tells him the honor is reserved for girls. Setting out to buy a 90th birthday gift for Little Dolly, Kenyon instead falls for a new baseball glove for himself. As regret weighs down his heart, he confides his shame to his father, who tells him that you can only learn from your mistakes. Just when Kenyon thinks he's run out of ideas for Little Dolly's gift, inspiration hits.
Customer Reviews:
Highly recommended.......2000-05-30
I enthusiastically recommend this book. I don't have children of my own, but I bought one copy for my nephew and another for my mother (a devoted reader of books for children). The story is simple enough - a boy who saves his hard-earned money for his grandmother's birthday, but then blows it on a baseball glove and has to come up with a meaningful gift that doesn't cost any money. The clever part of the story is that by being forced to think of what would mean the most to his grandmother, the boy is able to come up with a present that's not only better than any store-bought present, but that allows the grandmother to see him in a new light.
I'm especially happy that Watts doesn't write down to children, instead using a quietly humorous, at times bouncy style that appeals to children and adults, such as this line: "Kenyon's quiet easy glide to freedom was frozen by his grandmother's words." Or this one: "'I'm not sick. I'm just stupid.'" Moreover, the grandmother isn't called something common like "Grandma" or "Granny," but the distinctive "Little Dolly." The reader learns a lesson along with the boy, but what's most impressive about the story is that Little Dolly herself learns a lesson, breaking the standard wise-adult, foolish-kid story line.
I liked the full-color paintings, too, which nicely complement the story with a range of unusual perspectives.
This is not one of those picture books you get sick of reading after one or two times. You'll be happy to read it to your children over and over.

Book Description
Grandma has run the town's garbage business, and her three sons drive the trucks. But what happens when her sons are all too sick to work-and it's the 4th of July, the day of the Big Parade? Leave it to Grandma to get the town clean, with the help of her young grandson, Billy, as she embarks on a hilarious romp through town-and creates nearly as much mess as she cleans up.
Customer Reviews:
Grandma's Garbage Truck is Cute Cute Cute!.......2006-11-10
I ordered this book for my son because of his love for garbage trucks. The story is adorable, attention captivating and the illustrations are great too. When Grammy came to visit, we read the story to her and she thoroughly enjoyed it too. I recommend this book for boys and girls and those who are especially interested in garbage, garbage trucks and recycling. Not to worry, my daughter isn't big on trucks but she really likes this book too.
A lively story line in which Grannie takes charge when a sick garbage man threatens her favorite day.......2006-05-09
In Grandma Drove The Garbage Truck by Katie Clark, Grannie isn't a rocking-chair woman: she is sick of all the trash piled up in town and she decides to do something about it before the big Fourth of July parade. Lovely drawings by Amy Huntington mark a lively story line in which Grannie takes charge when a sick garbage man threatens her favorite day.

It's Sara's Russian grandma's birthday, and she has made a proclamation: "I have music in my Russian bones, and laughing in my heart. I have the day and the night, and I have all of you. That's why for me the best presents will be no presents." No presents? Sara is baffled. Her amazing grandma gives so much to everyone. How can they have a birthday party for her without gifts? Sara realizes that any "no present" for Grandma has to be pretty special. And the "no present" she finally gives is the best kind of all.
With deep warmth and love, Cari Best captures the sweet bond between grandmother and granddaughter. Set in an urban apartment building, with quirky, friendly neighbors, the story digs around family roots, portraying the trunk, branch, and blossoms of an immigrant family tree. Best's first picture book, Taxi! Taxi!, won the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Giselle Potter's art frequently appears in The New Yorker, and one of the picture books she illustrated, Gabriella's Song, was an ALA Notable Book. Here, her eye-catching watercolors invite young readers to join the neighborhood in celebrating the great Catherine's birthday. Includes a recipe for Russian borscht! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
A little English, a little Russian, and a lot of heart make a birthday celebration you won't want to miss! When Sara's grandma, Catherine the Great, suddenly announces, "This year for my birthday, I want no presents! I have music in my Russian bones, and laughing in my heart. I have the day and the night, and I have all of you," Sara is surprised. How can Grandma have a birthday party with no presents?" Her mama explains that a NO PRESENT can be anything from a kiss or a hug to a game of gin rummy -- as long as it comes from deep inside you. But what kind of NO PRESENT would be good enough for Catherine the Great? Mr. Minsky, Monica, and her dad, Mary Caruso and her baby, Mimmo, already have good ideas. But it isn't until Sara is surrounded by Grandma's bundles of Russian newspapers and books that she gets her won idea: She will teach Grandma to read and write English. This lively borscht-and-blintzes birthday celebration shows that sometimes NO PRESENTS can be the best presents of all.
Customer Reviews:
Your presence, not your presents is required.......2004-11-04
Some picture books find a variety of different ways to incorporate words from other languages into their text and pictures. For example, Simms Taback's, "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat" cleverly combines Hebrew texts and pictures throughout the story. I expected something similar with Cari Best's, "Three Cheers For Catherine the Great!" so I wasn't surprised when I came across pages where Russian script dots books and writings. Though the cover illustration of this book initially gave me half a moment's concern (the characters in this story all sport thick eyebrows and slitted eyes that make them look more than a little devious) I found the story to be warm, inviting, and just a mite bit touching. It's a beautiful tribute to one granddaughter's love of her grandmother.
Sara has a slight problem. It's her grandmother Catherine's birthday and the elder woman has made a very odd request. For her party she has made it very clear that she would like a party of "no presents". When confused by this request, Sara's mom explains that, "A good NO PRESENT can by anything from a kiss or a hug to a game of gin rummy". This makes more sense to Sara, but she has some difficulty coming up with something. After all, her downstairs neighbors know what they'll do. So do her upstairs neighbors. Finally, our heroine figures it out. She knows the perfect gift to give to her grandmother. One that will keep on giving and giving long after her birthday's past.
The book summarizes neatly the experience many immigrants went through to come to the United States. Catherine, it is explained, was known as Ekaterina and was renamed once she arrived in America. Kids are allowed to draw their own conclusions on whether or not THAT was a good idea. There's a nice bit of give and take between the neighbors of Sarah and Catherine herself. I liked the relationship between the hair stylist father and his young daughter, for example. The book seemed to display a gay father and his offspring in a clear accepting light. The pictures in this story slowly grow on you. Without reading the book they're initially a bit shocking. Characters are never more frightening than when they smile, for some reason. Yet these illustrations by Giselle Potter contain a great deal of love and affection in them. From the cut-away expansive shots that reveal what each character is doing in his or her apartment to the playful illustrations of Sara playing Gypsy dress-up with her grandmother, these are calm lovely images.
I recently read "Abuela" by Arthur Dorros, a story that is also about the close relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter. Though this story lacks the visual punch of Dorros' creation, it contains the same touching affection between two vastly different generations. For any family in which the grandparents are from another land, this book would make for fine reading. For anyone else, it's just a well-written interesting story.
Really original and fun........2003-08-14
The 4 year old I am a nanny to has asks me to read this to her over and over and I am happy to because it is so charming.
It is grandmas birthday and she wants "no presents". By the end of the story she is given things of real value by her family like a poem, a dance and best of all, the gift of a new language. It holds a wonderful sentiment for kids. But, don't expect miracles....when I asked the little girl if we should make her 5th birthday a "no present" birthday she quickly said, "NO!"
A must have for any kids library.
A Delightful Surprise.......2001-07-14
This book was recommended to me by two people that I work with. I thought the title was kind of cheesy, but I finally did read it, and I am happy I did.
The story is that of a young girl, named Sara, who is looking for the perfect "no-present" for her Russian grandmother. In this search, Sara reflects on many of the wonderful things about her grandmother, and finally comes up with a "no-present" for her grandmother, "Catherine the Great".
The story is not just about Sara's search, but also brings into light some of the characters' histories. Grandma is "Catherine" because when they came to America, "Ekaterina" just seemed too odd. Even in this "New World", grandma has managed to keep much of her Russian-ness about her, speaking in Russian and keeping Russian traditions. Sara is definitely more "American", but still loves her grandmother very much, and has an interest in keeping some of her heritage about herself as well.
I very much enjoyed the occasional phrases in Russian. I know to many people, these are unreadable and extraneous, but they are very sweet if you are fortunate enough to be able to read them.
Gifts from the Heart.......2000-09-02
A heartwarming story for all ages about people who give the greatest gifts of all - their kindness and sharing of their unique God-given talents.
Book Description
Even at the advanced age of seven, Magda Madrigal can remember back to when she was a little girl and would watch her abuela making tortillas. Having studied techniques of a master, she now feels confident of her own ability to turn out beautiful, delicious, and round tortillas. But somehow the rolling pin and the kitchen comal still hold a few surprises for the perplexed Magda and for her delighted family. Great art isn't always pretty, but in the case of "tortilla artist" Magda Madrigal at least it's tasty.

"When there's room in the heart, there's room in the house, except for a mouse." Those are the words that Rosa María remembers (an old saying from her mother) as she's preparing for the birthday of Little Catalina, her soon-to-be 7-year-old granddaughter. She's hoping to squeeze the entire family into her tiny casita for a fiesta with enchiladas, rice and beans ("no dinner was complete without rice and beans!"), birthday cake, a brand-new swing set, and even a piñata packed with candy.
But in the week before the party, there's so much to keep track of ("I am so busy that I'm forgetting to remember!") that she's just not sure she'll have everything ready. And to top it off, she keeps forgetting to set mousetraps for all the ratones scurrying around her home... or does she? She might not know it yet, but Rosa María lives with some pretty clever mice.
Illustrator Joe Cepeda's forgetful abuelita is a riot as she preps for the party, with her giant red glasses and braided blonde hair like a loaf of bread. Those frisky little rodents also manage to put on quite a show scrabbling around the vibrantly colored casita. Pam Muñoz Ryan's expert timing, rhythmic repetition, and skillfully sprinkled Spanish (with pronunciation glossary in the back) keep the story moving muy rápido, and the party--of course--turns out wonderfully, but with at least one good surprise. Maybe Rosa María misheard her mother's saying about those mice after all. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

A little known jewel.......2004-05-22
My children, now 6.5 years, have loved this book since they were 4. It's simply and wonderfully written, has a number of great messages between the lines, introduces non-Latino kids to a bit of language and culture, and the illustrations are delightful as well as quite brilliant. We notice new things in the pictures every time we read it, which adds a treasure-hunt aspect to our readings. This is one of my daughter's all time favorite books.
Great Author.......2003-11-17
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Pam Munoz Ryan at a Summer Arts Children's Storytelling Forum held at California State University - Fresno. She read the book to parents, teachers, and students who attended the conference. I was amazed on the writing, culture, and illustrations that she used for this book. The novel serves as a tale of her childhood spending time with her family at her grandmother's house. Overall, the story teaches children the value of traditions, family, and heritage. In short, "Mice and Beans" is a good book to read.
I delightful tale that is fun to read aloud.......2001-12-11
Mice and Beans is a wonderful tale about a "forgetful" Grandmother's preparations for a birthday party. I love the repetition in the text that heartily lends itself to a fun read-aloud session.
A zany story of mice.......2001-11-05
Joe Cepeda illustrates Pam Munoz Ryan's Mice & Beans, a zany story of mice who become involved in the food preparations at Rose Maria's house. Days of the week, party plans, and a plan for Mexican food make for rollicking action and fun accounts.
Pinata Power.......2001-10-18
A big-hearted abuela prepares for her grandchild's birthday, carefully planning, cooking and setting a mouse trap each eve.
Unknown to her, a family of mice copy her preparations for their own party and save by the day by filling the pinata when she forgets. Sprinkled with Spanish words, there is a glossary at the end. This is a warm and funny recipe for a festive family celebration.

Book Description
Eleanor's grandmother, Bubbe, makes chicken soup with matzo balls every Passover, and this year is no exception. With Eleanor's help, Bubbe makes some of the lumpiest, bumpiest, yummiest-looking matzo balls Eleanor has ever seen. These matzo balls are so delicious that no one in Eleanor's family can resist sneaking a taste, each thinking one or two matzo balls will never be missed. But when it comes time to serve the soup at the Passover meal, there aren't enough matzo balls for everyone-until Eleanor find one last matzo ball in a very unexpected place! Expressive, cheerful illustrations complement this warm story of a family's celebration of the Passover holiday and their rediscovery of its true meaning.
Customer Reviews:
Warm family story rich with tradition.......2001-08-18
This is one of my three-year-old son's favorite books. He loves the interaction between the daughter and grandmother. The story isn't heavy on the relgious aspects of Pesach, but it does touch on them. Most of all, it is an endearing story of family tradition.
Upbeat story of a family tradition.......2000-06-23
This book offers an upbeat story of one family's tradition of having Gramma prepare the matzo ball soup for Passover seder. Gramma shows up at the door with her special soup pot, and her favorite grand-daughter pitches in to help. Unfortunately, the story is cluttered with a lot of family members, dropping by to snatch a matzo ball out of the pot. And, the book fails to offer any religious meaning to the holiday -- the "Rugrats Passover" does a much better job at this. Comparing a lumpy matzo ball to the full moon at Passover seder is a bit of a stretch, and added little to the story. In short, my 3 yr old son found this book un-interesting. It lacks the warmth and enthusiasm of a similar book about a little girl spending the night at her grandfather's house: "Everything from A to Z....," which my son memorized from cover-to-cover within a week after the book arrived.

Customer Reviews:
we love christmas at Grannys!.......2005-02-19
It's Christmas time. The family in the story always goes to Granny's house for Christmas. They have a great dinner, open gifts and spend time enjoying each others company. When it's time for everyone to go home they find out that they have been snowed in at Granny's the roads are unsafe to drive on. They all spend the night on the floor on pillows and blankets.
The book showed a family that loved each other and have a great time together. It reminded our family of all the great Christmas memories that we have as we gather at our Granny's house
This is a great bedtime story to read loud around the holidays. Family members of all ages will enjoy this short picture book.
The True Meaning of Christmas.......2004-10-14
Christmas is Granny's favorite time of year, for she spends her days cooking, wrapping, decorating, and more with her friendly pooch, Edgar, and her grouchy kitty, Cat. On Christmas morning she is treated to a delightful visit from all of her family members, including Chatty Aunt Fanny and her sister Clarisse, Uncle Bert and his fire dog, Walter, Great Aunt Ruby, Annie, Michael, Otto, Aunt Ivy, Freddie, Dennie, Kennie, and Lambert. However, this year, after all of the celebrating, Granny's visitors can't leave, for there is a terrible snowstorm. So, Granny is pleased to have the opportunity for everyone to stay at her house, leaving her with a houseful of Christmas.
Barbara Joosse has done a wonderful job of creating a delightful holiday tale that captures the true essence of Christmas...family. Her simple, yet wonderful prose is easy to understand, so even young children will not be left contemplating what is going on, while the marvelous illustrations by Betsy Lewin are just perfect. If you're looking for a children's book about the true meaning of Christmas, this is it.

Soooo precious!.......2002-01-05
I bought this book as a way to start Christmas traditions in my home. I plan on reading it aloud every year. The story really reminds me of when I was young and everyone piled into my grandmother's house for Christmas. Plus, kids love the Shhhhhh and Whhhh noises!
Such a Warm Christmas Tale................2001-12-09
......kids are sure to love it! I'm buying "A Houseful of Christmas" for my six year old nephew as a Christmas gift. He's just learning to read and I think this book will re-affirm his confidence in his new reading skills. The story itself is just darling............Granny is getting ready, with her dog Edgar and cat Fat Cat, for a Christmas dinner at her house. When her guests arrive, they greet each other and sit down to dinner together and open gifts in the warmth of Granny's home as it snows heavily outside. When it's time to leave, Granny decides to invite everyone to stay over because the weather has gotten too bad outside. It becomes a sleepover for the whole family: Granny, aunts, uncles, cousins and lots of kids! The story really shows the Christmas holiday as one of love for family, giving, and feelings and warmth and thankfulness. The illustrations are quite nice also. I recommend this story-book for children approximately ages three to seven.
A Houseful of Love............2001-11-08
"Every year the whole family came to Granny's for Christmas." It was her favorite time of year. She baked and decorated, wrapped presents, and on Christmas morning made her candied yam casserole. Soon everyone arrived, chatty Aunt Fanny, and her skinny sister, Clarisse, Uncle Bert, the fireman, with his dog, Great-aunt Ruby, who always smelled like cherry cough drops, Aunt Ivy, and her three noisy little boys, Annie, Michael and little Otto, and of course, Lambert. They ate Uncle Bert's famous smoked turkey and Granny's yams, opened their gifts, and sang carols while Granny played her accordion. But this year something special and unexpected happened, they all got snowed in, and had a big sleepover on Granny's living room floor..... Barbara Joosse has outdone herself with this joyous story of love and family, traditions, and togetherness. Her simple text pulls the reader right into the story, and lets you enjoy the holiday as one of the family, and is complemented by Betsy Lewin's colorful and expressive watercolor artwork. Together, they've authored a delightful picture book about making a lifetime of memories and remembering all the good family times. Perfect for youngsters 3-7, A Houseful Of Christmas is a lovely story your entire family can read and share together as you begin to get ready for the holiday season and make your own new memories.
