Book Description

On December 25, 1991, at 7:35 p.m., soldiers lowered the red Soviet flag flying over the Kremlin and raised the Russian tri-color in its place. The moment passed without pomp or circumstance, resulting in a strangely muted end to a regime that had, in many ways, defined the 20th century.

Christmas 2001 is the tenth anniversary of the demise of the Soviet Union. To commemorate the event, National Geographic presents a mesmerizing retrospective that captures all the turbulence of Russia's new beginning.

With 120 extraordinary photographs by Gerd Ludwig and incisive essays by Fen Montaigne, Broken Empire captures Russia in all its complexity. The book examines not only the fledgling country's notorious corruption and poverty—the only aspects of Russia covered by most Western media—but many lesser known facets, including the rise of a new urban generation committed to building a prosperous society. Taking us into the daily lives of Russians, from entrepreneurs to pensioners, Broken Empire's images and words come together to capture as no book ever has the poignant resilience of a country endeavoring to find a workable middle road between capitalism and state control.

3 out of 5 stars bonecrushingly slanted, I get the message.......2005-04-26

astonishingly shocking at times and bland at others, is this the Russia of modern day or is this the image the author sees? Certainly the latter and probably not the former. Wonder how the people of Russia feel about this commentary in pictures on their existence? Bleak and disheartening comes to mind. Could a similar tome be assembled on America...of course if one looks hard enough at any topic the horror can be visualized.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent photography, butý........2003-01-19

Gerd Ludwig photography is first-class but I wish written text had been as creative as the photographer's eye. Nothing to discredit the author, Fen Montaigne. But Fen, must you be so boring and bland. A single image captured a thousand words and your text was a dreadful mono-tone grounded in a yawning choice of vocabulary.

If your looking for images and insight text read "The Home Planet" by Kevin W Kelley. Two different subject matters, but the written text illustrates where this book went astray.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Unforgettable.......2002-01-09

Broken Empire leaves an indelible mark on the memory. This stunning work presents a passionate and proud people, ravaged by the merciless process of political change. The book's coverage of the effect on the Russian environmental landscape alone, makes this a documentary of great importance. But most unforgettable, are the images which capture the entire spectrum of human experience that the nation's new self-image has imposed - from humiliation and despair, to dignity and triumph of the spirit against all odds - making this work an uncompromising testament to the historic realities of post-communistic Russia.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2002-01-09

Contrary to the cover image of the book, this work clearly takes the blindfolds off in delivering a superb body of photographic work.

I have been traveling to the former Soviet Union now for the past twenty-five years and have always been surprised by how ignorant the world was about this marvelous nation. Ludwig clearly has an intimate feel for the soul of this great world. The images breathe and display the majesty of this people and empire wonderfully, warts and all. This is not a tragic populace, but a noble collection of races and groups who share a common pride, humanism and patriotism with a unique perspective and outlook on life that is both refreshing and vital.

I thought that the Western world would never get it right about the great land and her people, but Ludwig's masterpiece clearly and artfully reveals the nuances of an emerging colossus whose rightful place in history, commerce, politics, art and culture is assured by its dogged determinism to continue, to live, to strive to express the essence that is "Mother Russia".

And to do all of this with photography...what an achievement!!

5 out of 5 stars Broken Empire, Broken Dreams.......2001-12-31

An incredible journey through the remains of the former Soviet Union both in pictures and words. Broken Empire puts the lie to the "Workers Paradise" promised by the USSR's once all-powerful communist regime, revealing the harsh realities of environmental and spiritual decay left in its wake. The images are dazzling and heartbreaking. A must see and read book for anyone who loves truth.

    Book Description

Atrocities committed by the Nazis during the Holocaust were photographed extensively. These images have been subjected to a perplexing variety of treatments: variously ignored, suppressed, distorted and--above all--exploited for propaganda purposes or political interest. This book examines the history of this aspect of the Holocaust--its aftermath and afterlife. Whether taken by Nazis or their collaborators, by Jews themselves, their sympathizers and the resistance movements in the occupied territories, or by Allied forces at the end of the war, Struk suggests that the provenance of these images has been seen as of secondary importance to their meaning and the political ends they have been used for--from the desperate attempts of the war-time underground, to the memorial museums of Europe, the US and Israel today. Struk recounts the history of the use and abuse of Holocaust photographs and asks whether or not these images can serve as "evidence", as true representations of the events they depict. The book is illustrated with a wide range of photographs, including some never before seen.

      Book Description

In 1936 anthropologist Margaret Mead and her husband, Gregory Bateson, retreated from lowland Bali, which was the focal point of much scholarly and tourist activity, to the remote village of Bayung Gedé in the island's central highlands. Although they wrote relatively little about their work in this place, which Mead called "our village, way up in the mountains, a lovely self-contained village," they did leave behind a remarkably rich and extensive photographic record of their time there.

Margaret Mead, Gregory Bateson, and Highland Bali includes 200 photographs that the couple took between 1936 and 1939, the vast majority of which have never before been published. They vividly capture the everyday lives of the men, women, and children of Bayung Gedé, their homes and their temples, and many other fascinating details of village life not featured in Mead and Bateson's publications.

In a substantial introductory essay, Gerald Sullivan, who selected the photographs, uses excerpts from fieldnotes and correspondence to illuminate Mead and Bateson's ethnographic work. Tracing the project from its inception in their proposals to the publication of their work, Sullivan shows how they used the photographs both as fieldnotes and as elements in their theoretical argument. Finally, he explores what the photographs reveal—independently of Mead and Bateson's project—about the Balinese character to the contemporary viewer.

The result is a both a substantial contribution to visual anthropology and an invaluable supplement to the published works of Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson.

Once upon a time in the United States, before the ubiquitous yellow arches of a certain hamburger chain spread like chicken pox, eating on the go was an occasion. Those long-gone days when customer service was number one--and meals were dished up by enthusiastic young women costumed to resemble drum majorettes--are captured in this compilation of vintage photographs and memorabilia, crammed to overflowing with nostalgia.

      Book Description

Travel back to the heyday of the American drive-in restaurant --complete with swinging ponytails, shiny new automobiles, and the aroma of French fries drifting through unrolled car windows. Beginning with the original Texas Pig Stand of 1921, this evocative compendium cruises through 40 years of drive in culture, tracing the history of roadside restaurant architecture and the people who created it. Engagingly illustrated with historical photographs and a rich assortment of related ?ephemera, from menus to matchbox covers, Car Hops and Curb Service chronicles a unique chapter of popular culture for anyone who sipped a malt, hung a tray, or cruised a drive in parking lot -- or wished they had.

Talk about filled with information-this book has all of the pictures and the details behind the car hops. I thought the uniqueness behind the Tam O Shanter was cool. Also, the celebrities that went to the drive inns and what they ordered. The book explains some of the history behind the word "car hop." Just a fun, light read!!! Highly recommended for those people who remember going to the A&W or other drive inn, especially in California.

These photos are the creme de la creme from the famous Getty collection, and with their captions in English, German and French they are compactly educational beyond what one might expect. I've bought many in the series for resale, dipped into this one and was captivated. From shots of Hitler that he wanted destroyed to pictures of sawing up WWI propellers to saving statues at the Tussaud's wax museum fire to the typical and wacko in work, recreation and entertainment, these are a feast for the eye coupled with great anecdotal text-bites. Buy the series!

        5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book and a great bargain.......2002-10-14

This book is one in a series of titles being brought out by the Hutton Getty Picture Collection. Within the next year or so, every decade of the 20th century should have its own volume. Although widely available as a remaindered title, even full price these books are extraordinary bargains. Each volume contains over 300 photographs that provide a visual record of each decade.

The 1920s is arranged thematically, with brief introductions in English, German, and French to the theme to be covered. For instance, there are sections devoted to "Movers and Shakers," "Work," "Leisure," "Science," and "Sport," to mention only a few. The photographs do a marvelous job of depicting many of the trends and concerns of the time. Most are striking, and some of the photographs are unforgettable.

The first photographs in the book are perhaps the most haunting: Studio shots from 1925 of a wildly gesticulating Adolf Hitler, standing in front of a phonograph, striking one over-the-top pose after another. They are chilling partly because they are the very poses he would strike a decade later in front of the multitudes at Nuremberg and elsewhere. But they are also chilling because one realizes in looking at them that Hitler obviously had practiced these very poses, probably in front of a mirror, and one can easily imagine him alone in his rooms, standing in front of a looking glass, practicing speeches and gestures. I found myself almost of necessity thinking of Robert DeNiro as Travis Bickle, standing in front of his own mirror. The photographs bring home Hitler's inherent insanity more powerfully than anything else I have seen.

There are many other striking photos. I was delighted to see a photo of the remarkably handsome Ivor Novello, who is the real life person that Jeremy Northam portrayed in GOSFORD PARK. The section on celebrities showed a number of actors and actresses in pictures I had never seen before (James Cagney, Buster Keaton, a strange photo of Greta Garbo). I especially liked a posed photo of Mary Pickford striking one of her classic poses with Anna Pavlova striking a balletic pose with a clownishly made up face (they atone later with a shot of Pavlova in her normal face). The book manages to summarize all the passions, fads, and trends of the entire decade.

I recommend this to anyone with either a passion for collections of photographs or with an interest in early 20th century history.

5 out of 5 stars history thru photographs.......2000-03-30

Tired of reading history book's? Nick Yapp found a great way in which one can learn (and SEE) what happened in the last century decade by decade. This is more than just an ordinary photograph book for it contains "history-worthy" comments. Appart from the 1920's other decades are available (30s, 40s, 50s, 60, 70s) for this reason the book's size comes in handy for one can fit ALL the collection in a relative small amount of space. I already picture them lying in my coffee table, making them available for all my friends to enjoy. The price is relative cheap. The best part is that you can buy each one separately. I'm buying the 1920's for my grandmother, for she was born in that decade. Although I recommend buying the whole pack and enjoying a history review through the incredible pictures of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Each one is worth much more than a thousand words.......2003-01-20

In a decade dominated by war, the majority of these 1940s photographs are also primarily concerned with that conflict. The first four chapters (out of eleven) deal exclusively with that topic, and World War II also features heavily in some of the later sections. It's an interesting collection of photographs, being a mixture of professional photographers documenting historic events and snapshots taken by ordinary people of commonplace items that are notable now purely for their vintage quality.

The photos that do chronicle the Second World War are outstanding, though those few that detail the various atrocities can make for difficult viewing. Pictures of bravery and heroics sit side by side with images of pure human suffering. Sacrifices at home are shown next to the work being done abroad. This is a well-done summation of those war years in all their different facets.

War is not the only subject catered to in this collection. Sports, fashion, show business, and other events of the post-war years are dealt with. Several celebrities of the day make cameos on these pages, but the primary focus is upon the regular people going about their everyday business; the entertainers are confined to making moral boosting visits to overseas troops. A selection of delightfully goofy pictures is a welcome change from some of the weightier offerings. Seeing Miss Italy knocking out Miss England, Ingrid Bergman chuckling at Alfred Hitchcock, or a Russian solder dancing with an American serviceman is a great antidote to the more depressing and destructive scenes.

The black and white photography here offers us a great insight into the way of life during the 1940s. Each photograph is captioned in English, German and French, but it's not those few words that will be sticking in your memory. There are some unforgettable images that have been captured here. They were stored for decades in plastic and glass, but many of them will now be imprinted in the minds of anyone who peruses this picture book. The photographs here are priceless.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of relatively unknown photos of the forties.......2002-12-04

This is one of the better volumes in the marvelous Decades of the 20th Century series edited by Nick Yapp of photographs from the Hutton Getty Picture Collection. To be honest, this was such a fascinating decade that it would have been extremely difficult to have failed to come up with a great collection. The decade was, of course, dominated by WW II, but the photographs collected in this volume are for the most part completely unfamiliar. But because the photographs are absolutely first rate, the reader can feel that he or she is looking at the war with new eyes. I was particularly interested, for instance, in the photographs of the personal bomb shelters that were used in London during the Blitz.

I recently friends and relatives, and had a different volume edited by Nick Yapp from the Hutton Getty Collection. It was a lot of fun seeing one person, and then another, pick up the book, look at a picture or two, and then go back to the beginning and look page-by-page through the entire collection. These books are not only extremely informative and illuminating of the decades of the previous century, but enormously entertaining.

As I work through each volume in the series, I find the quirks of the series to be increasingly endearing. Like most Americans, cricket has about as much interest for me as bingo, but it is fun to see each volume celebrate cricketeers who are utterly unknown in the U.S. I can imagine that the Anglo-European slant of the volumes would be irritating to some. Few pictures of American everyday life are included. For the most part, Americans pictured are celebrities, athletes, or political figures. Nonetheless, I love all the volumes in the series that have been published so far, and am very excited about the forthcoming additional books that will complete the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hardest years of this century in pictures.......2000-12-30

This book interested me, in the first because of its pictures. Here you can find a drama, chaos, living and world of little man through pictures on order of appearance. How someone visely sad "one picture speaks a 1000 words" I can also say that this is right to say for this book. Also you can buy it for an low price and anjoy for some time. Recommedation...

          5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-02-16

This is a wonderful book. I speny a good deal of time in Turkana in 2000 and this book truly captures what Turkana is like. It is very moving and beautiful. I recommend it to anyone who has a heart for the struggles of other human beings and especially those who love African culture.

5 out of 5 stars Emotional and unforgettable black-and-white photographs.......2002-10-08

Featuring a Foreword by the Dalai Lama, Kakuma - Turkana: Dueling Struggles, Africa's Forgotten Peoples by Daniel Cheng Yang offers the nonspecialist general reader a profound interesting photographic journal of the struggles of the indigenous peoples of northwest Kenya. The emotional and unforgettable black-and-white photographs capture the harsh reality of life in lands with highly limited resources in an unforgettable compendium of images and commentary. Kakuma - Turkana is highly recommended photo-documentary for African Studies reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

A very informative book of a country not covered by the media. The photographs bring the reader to an understanding of the plights these people face in everyday life
