Book Description
With little skill, surprisingly few ingredients, and even the most unsophisticated of ice-cream makers, you can make the scrumptious ice creams that have made Ben & Jerry's an American legend.
BEN & JERRY'S HOMEMADE ICE CREAM & DESSERT BOOK tells fans the story behind the company and the two men who built it-from their first meeting in 7th-grade gym class (they were already the two widest kids on the field) to their "graduation" from a $5.00 ice-cream-making correspondence course to their first ice-cream shop in a renovated gas station.
But the best part comes next. Dastardly Mash, featuring nuts, raisins, and hunks of chocolate. The celebrated Heath Bar Crunch. New York Super Fudge Chunk. Oreo Mint. In addition to Ben & Jerry's 11 greatest hits, here are recipes for ice creams made with fresh fruit, with chocolate, with candies and cookies, and recipes for sorbets, sundaes, and baked goods. The 90-plus authentic recipes are spiced with Lyn Severance's bright, quirky, full-color illustrations. Over 383,000 copies in print.

Fun book!!.......2007-10-09
They make some of my favorite flavors, and this book can help you make the same ones at home!! Fun for the family!!
All and all, not a bad book.......2007-10-01
The first time I tried a recipe out of this book, it was way too icy. The next time, I took the time to read the intro and all the technical information and the next batch of ice cream was way better. They tell you ways to make your ice cream more or less rich. I have only tried about 4 of the recipes but first time was the only time I was disappointed.
Love this book!.......2007-09-07
I love ice cream and I love this book. I have made three of the recipes so far and will try the fourth today. All have been scrumptious!
Ben & Jerry's Ice CReam book.......2007-08-20
I bought this to use with my new ice cream maker and love it! It gives a fun history of Ben & Jerry's plus some great recipes. If you have an ice cream maker, you need this book.
I'm in love @}->---.......2007-08-12
While I'm not the best cook in the world, even these recipes have turned out well for me. I love this book and now I'm hooked on trying out new flavours. They are easy to follow and definately great tasting and creamy. I love the Oreo Mint especially. When Summer rolls around here, I can't wait to try the sorbets. This is definately one of the best dessert books I've bought and you don't ever need to get bored with options when there is more than 90 recipes to try. Go get this and have fun in the kitchen. It's great.
Book Description
From the world's greatest scientists comes the world's greatest science book--now in a smaller format at a great new affordable price. With a foreword written by critically acclaimed author Simon Singh (Fermat's Last Theorem), and essays by such major writers as Richard Dawkings, Susan Greenfield, and John Gribbin, it presents 250 of the most significant milestones in the history of scientific discovery. Accompanying this unique perspective on our ever-evolving view of the universe are some of the most visually dramatic illustrations you'll ever see. Short, lucid articles focus on everything from the speculations of the ancient Greeks to today's Nobel Prize winners, from Ptolemy's theory of an earth-centered universe to the first steps on the moon, and from the dawning of the concept of zero to the cloning of Dolly the sheep. Biology, physics, astronomy, medicine and mathematics: the breakthroughs in every field are all here and celebrated, in the first truly accessible, fully illustrated story of science.

The Science BOok is great for homeschooling multiple children!.......2006-05-03
I got this book to supplement our Homeschool supplies. It is great for teaching children of multiple ages because each page covers a compelte topic. It starts at the begining of time and goes chronologically through the eras of science. Each "lesson" talks about the scientist with a little bit of surrounding history as well as the scientific information, which helps to merge history with science and bring a better understanding to the concepts. I am really glad I bought this book!

Book Description
Critically acclaimed for Girl Culture and Fast Forward, Lauren Greenfield continues her exploration of contemporary female culture with Thin, a groundbreaking book about eating disorders. Greenfield's photographs are paired with extensive interviews and journal entries from twenty girls and women who are suffering from various afflictions. We meet 15-year-old Brittany, who is convinced that being thin is the only way to gain acceptance among her peers; Alisa, a divorced mother of two whose hatred of her body is manifested in her relentless compulsion to purge; Shelly, who has been battling anorexia for six years and has had a feeding tube surgically implanted in her stomach; as well as many others. Alongside these personal stories are essays on the sociology and science of eating disorders by renowned researchers Joan Jacobs Brumberg, Dr. David Herzog, and Dr. Michael Strober. These intimate photographs, frank voices, and thoughtful discussions combine to make Thin not only the first book of its kind but also a portrait of profound understanding.

Excellent Book!.......2007-08-29
This book was great. It really displayed eating disorders in a way that people can relate to. I would recommend this book.
Great.......2007-08-15
As someone who is went through treatment at the Renfrew Center, I find this book extremely well put together.
Great companion book to the DVD.......2007-07-24
The HBO special left me wanting to know more about the women in Renfrew. This book is great because along w/ the four women the documentary followed closely, we are also introduced to many other women and get to hear their stories.
I love it!.......2007-07-22
This is one of the most awesome books I have ever read on the subject of Eating Disorders. The pictures are heartbreaking and the content is so real. I HIGHLY recommend this book and the DVD that goes with it!
Realistic Look at the Mental and Physical Ravages of EDs.......2007-04-06
As a former anorexic (purging type--in recovery for ten years and two months exactly!), I bought this book partially expecting to be triggered by the graphic pictures of women who reached weights that I never "achieved." Instead I found an honest, raw and, ultimately, tragic portrait of what it's like to still be in the grips of an eating disorder. I didn't expect this book to make me feel this way, but I'm so grateful to be recovered--even when I think my stomach sticks out and that I have thunder thighs!
Thanks Lauren, for reminding me of what it's like to be embroiled in an all-consuming obsession with food and weight and worth--of never being good enough, of letting an inanimate object (food) determine my value. I'm happy to be free, even though I never got deathly "thin." I was thin and am thin . . . enough.
Book Description
Start spreading the news - our new guide to NYC is out and you are going to love it. It's smart and stylish, with a limited edition silver cover perfect for this shimmering, luminous city. Written by three opinionated New Yorkers (is there any other kind?), they share their knowledge on the best restaurants, shopping, art galleries, theatres, you name it. From Central Park to Park Slope, Soho to Dumbo, these locals know where to be in NYC.
So what makes this guide so great? Well there's:
o A full-colour pull-out map highlighting walking tours and attractions. And it's waterproof too, so if you spill your martini, it just wipes straight off.
o Up-to-the-minute, blink-and-you'll-miss-it, insider tips from NYC residents.
o The lowdown on some offbeat outer borough adventures.
o Gloriously glossy mini-guides.
o Detailed arts and entertainment coverage, from live music to rooftop happy hours.
o Themed walking tours so you can fully explore Soho shopping or East Village rock `n' roll.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide, but double-check the maps.......2007-09-06
I had to buy this book at the last minute, due to the fact that I wasn't contented with the format and information that New York (Eyewitness Travel Guides) had, which I borrowed from a friend. And I was fairly contented with the amount of information that LP has for this book. It has a detailed coverage of Manhattan and its neighborhoods, and it covers areas outside Manhattan more extensively than the other book.
The one complaint I have about this edition is that they do not double-check the maps. The map at p. 282 especially is at fault. For example, the Majestic Theater is at w 44th St. but the map lists it as somewhere in 41st St. Perhaps somebody forgot to proofread the maps this time.
OK but you don't need it.......2007-08-28
If you live near by and go frequently then maybe this book would be of use.
Complete NYC guide.......2007-05-13
Typical LP style guide, it contains interesting city tours and brief descriptions of many touristic and non touristic spots in the city.
Really Useful.......2007-01-09
It was the first time I was on NYC, I bought this guide couple of weeks before my trip. The Maps where just amazing, really useful, its true that you find a lot of maps overthere anyway, but getting familiar with your guide was really useful for me. The tour that the guide suggest are really accurate. The only thing that I would change is the amount of pages, because of two reasons 1.- is kind of bulky so even when is really easy to carry with your hand, or even when you are walking with back pack, when you have been walking for 10 hours even a sheet of paper will be heavy, 2.- I did not had the time to read it from the begining to the end, it was just too much, before the trip I had to work and during the trip I refused to seat in the park to read the guide having this amazing things to see. Dont get me wrong, this is an amazing guide, and in my next trip I would definetly consider buying lonely planet again.
I recommend this guide only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or other small guide like that..........2006-09-03
I recently visited NYC for the first time. I took only three books about that city with me: this guide, the "Top 10 New York" guide, and "The Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide". I must say that the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" was not my favourite, though.
Truth to be told, this guide has a lot of useful information, and that proved helpful in some cases. What is more, it has some interesting planned walking tours that I liked, and good sections with data about the city and its history.
On the other hand, this guide doesn't have too many photos in color, and it includes some maps that are not specially good, particularly if you compare them with the spectacular maps of the "Top 10 New York" guide. Furthermore, it is big enough to be heavy, something that you will not appreciate if you have to carry it with you the whole day.
On the whole, I can say that I liked this guide, but I recommend it only as a complement to the "Top 10 New York" guide, or another small guide like that, the kind of guide that you can carry with you while you leave the "Lonely planet NYC Guide" in your hotel room to check at night if needed. Enjoy your trip :)

Customer Reviews:
The Penguin Guide is a fun read, but not much more.......2007-08-14
I've loved reading through the Penguin Guide over the years, and I recently picked up this version at a used book store. I still enjoy reading them, but like others have said, it's not quite the same. Also, you can't always believe their recomendations are a sure winner. For example, I love collecting Boyce's Eight Symphonies, and I recently bought Naxos' (2005) version with the Aradia Ensemble, and it was a wonderful recording and far more enjoyable than Trevor Pinnock's version. But, the Penguin Guide (2006/07) gave the Naxos recording just one star, but Pinnock's got three stars. I couldn't agree less!!!
So, it is a fun read and you can find some great recordings through the Penguin Guide, but other times they'll recommend turds. If you are looking for music references, the best thing to do is use many different music guides (Amazon, Gramophone, Third Ear, etc.) and not just the Penguin Guide.
With Some Reservations.......2007-07-15
Well, I finally get down to reviewing this great old tome, and I now find that I do not feel the same about it as I did, say 10 years ago. I somehow find this rather sad.
.....Perhaps some comments
I would like to be able to heartily recommend this (or some other) guide to the beginner for help in building a really good, solid collection.
Somehow, over the years, this very good, concise directory to great recordings, has become this massive over-grown, edgy, "way-to-much-information-for-the-novice-collector" book. I think that people starting out are wasting their money, sadly, on this guide...it has become something more valuable for experienced, and Even More experienced collectors. This is my viewpoint on this book at this point.
Good for the Experienced, NOT Good for the Great Unwashed! This book is simply too much money for the beginner to spend for the information that they will actually use out of it....what??, the 100 list in the front two pages???
I do not know, actually, where to send these beginners for help...perhaps the NPR Guide? Or the Rough Guide to Classical Music???
Sorry I cannot be more positive about this book for the general overall public. ~operabruin
Not for the unwashed..........2007-06-30
The guide is pricey, especially for a young beginner on a budget. One alternative would be to go to a fancy store with a separate classical room (like Tower or a Barnes & Noble with a Starbucks in it) and pick out the one CD with the fanciest, prettiest package---and you'll be 2 or 3 times as likely to enjoy it as any Penguin Rosette CD. Try it. It works!
Handy guide for aficionados, but bear in mind its limitations.......2007-05-24
I'd like to clear up some misconceptions here. The Penguin Guide covers classical music CDs released in Britain since the last edition of the Guide. It's a British publication intended to assist British buyers to sort through what is currently available *in Britain*, so it's silly to complain about "bias". And if every CD of every work ever released was included, the Guide would be unfeasibly large, so limiting it to current releases is a sensible compromise. Yes, some of the verdicts seem wrong, but that's a matter of personal taste (there are some conductors deified by the cogniscenti whom I absolutely *loathe* - but I won't name them here!). Any alleged "inconsistency" is due to the fact that several different reviewers are involved - it would be impossible for one person to write the whole thing.
That said, there are a couple of annoying editorial mistakes here: Pesek's Dvorak cycle is listed but the review is missing. Elsewhere I found a review that hadn't been listed. These things happen, I suppose. Hopefully the next edition will have improved in this respect.
For new-comers to classical music, I would recommend *against* buying this guide. It's a fairly large investment that won't really pay off unless you already know something of the field, and are able to balance the Guide's opinions against your own. Better to occasionally refer to it at the library or in a specialist shop, and take it with a grain of salt.
For collectors, however, this is a great aid (particularly if you can find it cheap), bearing in mind its inherent limitations of nationality, time period and occasional editorial glitch. I often peruse the entries even when not considering a purchase, simply because it's helpful to have other opinions besides my own at hand.
It's not perfect, but then again, what is?.......2007-04-29
I have read both poor reviews and great reviews for this guide, but the fact remains no guide book is perfect. They all make some bad choices. For example, I used to subscribe to Fanfare. Some of the reviewers were usually right on the mark; some were not.
So what do you do? You buy one which covers a lot of ground, like the Penguin Guide does, and supplement what you read in the Penguin Guide with reviews on Amazon, Tower (not too much to work with there) and Arkiv and any other sources you may come across, like [...]. I have three recordings of Tosca, the famous mono one of Callas on EMI, the recent one of Georghiu and Alagna, and Maazel's with Nilsson, Corelli and Fischer-Dieskau. The Maazel was not even listed in my '96 edition of the Penguin Guide, although that recording has been around for many years.
How and why did I find it? The Callas is an awesome recording, but it is still in mono. The Georghiu-Alagna has an immediacy suggestive of a deep love, but I have long wanted a performance that was very dramatic and a recording, any, that included both Nilsson and Correlli at their best. I had seen them together at the old Met in Turandot, an experience I have never forgotten. I also wanted to hear Fischer-Dieskau singing a very emotional Italian opera. On Amazon I found a recording that covered all three elements I had been looking for. It was the Maazel recording of Tosca. It also happens to be one of the best things Maazel has ever done.
Does the Penguin Guide help? It directed me to some of the best performances, like Keilberth's Der Freischutz and Giulini's Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, plus many more.
More importantly, the Guide also made me aware of how many good pieces of music there are which I had been unaware of. There are many excellent ways to learn what else is out there, and this is one of them.

I happened to pass through this most wounderful book by mistake, but when I read through it,Ii felt really sorry for not depending on it as an additional but essential referrence during my college and postgraduate years, the chapters are well organized and deeply written easily read, the illustrations are very clear and informative, although I might suggest a second more expanded chapter on infections being one of the most serious sergical enemies infections. ..I really want to thank the editors and contributors for the enormous effort they have put here and all the knowledge I found in this great book.

Again, Some Reservations.......2007-07-15
Again, here, as with my review of the "Guide" itself (odd years is this Guide, even years are the Update), I find that I no longer feel as I did years ago about this book.
I sadly feel that the beginner with collecting classical music needs a smaller, not so expensive book and supplement every other year, as this is. This book, like the guide, years ago was much simpler, and was easily recommendable to the novice music collector. I cannot review this supplement (and the Guide) anymore for the general music buying public, as I feel it no longer serves all equally. It has become a guide, I feel, for the more experienced listener/collector, and that is OK, but the beginner, I feel is wasting his/her money on these guides.
Where to tell them to seek help? I'm not really sure, but I suggest perhaps the Rough Guide to Classical Music, and perhaps the NPR Guide.... I feel that basically the top 100 list on the first pages of the Penguin Guides are all the beginner will really need for a few years, why waste $45 on these two books?????
Sorry to sound negative, I really don't mean to, but I cannot see that these books serve the "general" music public. ~operabruin
How can you go wrong...?.......2007-01-26
Buying CD's is expensive...the Penguin Classical CD/DVD is a must. Why? Because it will save you alot of money...period. Whether you agree with every review or not, if you buy CD's...you can for the price of one get help in deciding which to buy, and which to stay from. I have used my guide alot, and usually end up completely agreeing with the reviews. Buy it...you'll like it.
Book Description
Recorded during the blazing summer of 1971 at Villa Nellcote, Keith Richards' seaside mansion in the south of France, Exile on Main St. has been hailed as one of the Rolling Stones' best albums--and one of the greatest rock records of all time. Yet its improbable creation was difficult, torturous...and at times nothing short of dangerous.
In self-imposed exile, the Stones--along with wives, girlfriends, and a crew of hangers-on unrivaled in the history of rock--spent their days smoking, snorting, and drinking whatever they could get their hands on. At night, the band descended like miners into the villa's dank basement to lay down tracks. Out of those grueling sessions came the familiar riffs and rhythms of "Rocks Off," "Tumbling Dice," "Happy," and "Sweet Virginia."
All the while, a variety of celebrities--John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Gram Parsons among them--stumbled through the villa's neverending party, as did the local drug dealers, known to one and all as "les cowboys." Villa Nellcote became the crucible in which creative strife, outsize egos, and all the usual byproducts of the Stones' legendary hedonistic excess fused into something potent, volatile, and enduring.
Here, for the first time, is the season in hell that produced Exile on Main St.

Style Over Substance, Always! .......2007-10-13
Here, Hear! Folks, Let's not all get our panties in a wad! I give the book 4 stars and I haven't even seen it, much less read it!
I like the title and I love the cover so once I HAVE read it, I will give it 5ice (5ive nice) stars, if I can dance to it and it has a nice beat, that is! Meanwhile, can't we all just get along?!?!?
Another "Music" book which skips the "music" .......2007-09-10
I just finished this book. It is similar to the recent one on Derek and the Dominoes. All kinds of tabloid info on drugs, women and other debauchery but extremely short on the music. There are also glaring mistakes: 1. the author claims Jumpin' Jack Flash was on the Sticky Fingers album (wrong - it was a single released two years earlier). 2. he claims that Mick Taylor replaced Clapton in the Bluesbreakers (wrong, Taylor replaced Peter Green). 3. He claims the song "Dandelion" was on the album Satanic Majesty's Request. False. This is basic information and there is no excuse for getting it wrong. Not an auspicious beginning to the book. At the end of the book a few pages are thrown in discussing the music (which he claims are for (paraphrase - not exact words) eccentric people who like all this music stuff - I guess he means those of us who are not interested in tabloid gossip). If you're interested in what drugs Mick and Keith were taking or how many people Anita Pallenberg slept with, get this book. If you're interested in music, however, consider looking elsewhere. This book is a big disappointment. It is akin to a teen going out on a date waiting to kiss the girl good night and at the end she just says "see 'ya" and leaves you on the street. Not Much About the Record Itself.......2007-08-02
I picked this up while waiting for a plane to Philly. As a musician, I was pleased to find a book that (I thought) was about the making of one of my favorite recordings. This is a fast read. It's really just about the debauchery that took place while the record was being made and readied for market. Those of us who were old enough to remember this period of music history will learn absolutely nothing new here. I like the earlier review with the sarcastic proclamation "oh my God! Keith Richards took drugs!" That about sums it up. There's really very little (maybe a couple of sentences) about the actual sessions. I don't recommend it. I left it in the hotel room in Philly.
don't bother reading/buying.......2007-07-06
Read 'Terry (Milwaukee)''s comments first. Dead-on analysis of this book; poorly written and often distracting - somewhere between a sophmore book report and a gossip column. Oddly organized and consistently annoying with the "music lyric seques"... it was a frustrating chore to read this book.
One thing I never figured out - was the author even at Nellcote (Cote d'azur in France)? I was never able to determine what, if any, relationship he actually had to the Rolling Stones...
Exiled! Get the Janovitz book instead........2007-06-26
I just finished reading this and the whole time I was making notes about the problems -- the factual errors, the reliance on Sanchez's shady material, the bad wordplay and the author's irritating use of the present tense.
But then I came to this page and realized that the book has already been slammed again and again for those very same reasons.
So, my short review: Word.
Slightly longer review: Greenfield's usually pretty good (regarding his book on Bill Graham I have to drop the music geek cliche: "seminal") but this book is a bust. Without referencing the music this book loses all context and it could almost be about any band, any party. Still, if you want dirt, dirt you get.
** A much better recent book is Bill Janovitz's book about "Exile" in the 33-1/3rd series. **
Janovitz (who led the band Buffalo Tom and writes extensively for AMG) covers the music with a musician's expertise without getting boring, and he brings to the table the genuine enthusiasm of a Stones fan. Plus, it's cheaper and cool and hip-pocket sized without being too small.

Book Description
The classic insider's account of the Rolling Stones' legendary 1972 STP tour.
Thirty years ago, the Rolling Stones swept America, taking Exile on Main Street to Main Streets across the nation. Everyone held their breath to see what would happen; the Stones' previous U.S. tour had been a chaotic circus culminating in the infamous death of a fan at Altamont. And this tour (the "Stones Touring Party") was rumored to be wilder than ever: bigger shows in major arenas, with a far larger entourage and even more drugs. Robert Greenfield went along for the ride, and came away with a riveting insider's account, called by Ian Rankin "one of the greatest rock books ever written." The reality lived up to the rumor: take one part Lee Radziwill, a dash of Truman Capote, set the scene at Hef's Playboy mansion, and toss in the county jail for good measure. That was the Stones Touring Party, the ultimate rock 'n' roll band at the height of its spectacular depravity.

Interesting Read with Some Glaring Errors.......2007-08-15
Greenfield's first book on the Rolling Stones chronicling their North American tour of 1972 is far better than his recent "Exile On Main Street: A Season in Hell with the Rolling Stones". I enjoyed the style of writing and the bird's eye view of things that went on during the tour. I knew that the Stones' touring party was typically fairly depraved but I really had no idea of the extent of that depravity. I hate to be all PC and all that but young women (girls really) were treated as something to use and throw away. There are several accounts of young women who, while not part of the Stones Touring Party, were highly visible throughout the tour, used up for sordid entertainment, allowed themselves to be completely humiliated without even realizing it (the airplane film incident), and discarded like garbage. It's very sad the things that some of these young women did in order to be near that glittering star. I wonder how they feel today? Everything had to be cleared by Jagger and Richards, these two men have much to atone for, really.
There are some really dumb and glaring mistakes and that fact that this is a second edition publication make them unforgivable really:
For example, on page 115 Greenfield tells us about how a young Mick Taylor took Eric Clapton's place in Mayall's Blues Breakers. Greenfield must have smoked an awful lot of dope in his day. Anyone who knows ANYTHING about the music of that era knows that Peter Green (who went on to found the original Fleetwood Mac) replaced Clapton. Mick Taylor replaced Peter Green. Duh? That's rock-guitar history/appreciation 101 and Greenfield gets a big fat "F"
On page 117 Greenfield mentions men in Denver washing their cars in the drive way and wondering what kind of season the Denver Bears were going to have... What? While it is true that in the late 50's and very early 60's Denver did have a semi-pro football team called the Denver Bears (almost NO-ONE in Denver remembers this), by 1972, Bronco mania had long taken hold in Denver (I was there). The Broncos were just a couple of years shy of their first appearance in a string of many very disappointing Superbowl performances (thank God they got that monkey of their backs).
Didn't this guy have an editor? Who proofed this darn thing? Presumably a member of the Stones Touring Party who was just as stoned as everyone else. Again, this is a second edition boys and girls. Mistakes like the two cited above are good examples of shoddy authorship and editing. Maybe some writing course will use them as examples.
Those two mistakes are glaring and it leaves me wondering about how many not so glaring mistakes this book also contains.
'OUTLAWS IN LOVE...KINGS OF THE DECADENT LAWN.'.......2006-07-30
I read this book sometime around 1975 when it first surfaced as a highly literate diary chronicling the Rolling Stones 1972 tour of America.Basking in the reflected glory of the (then and arguably still)'greatest rock n' roll band in the world';the author is afforded access all areas, and guides the reader from bickering rehearsal sessions, through rigid security meetings and late flights, until finally you are granted a carte blanche ticket for the greatest show on earth.Greenfield's cultured and informative reporting hurls you head-first into the crazed and ruthless world of the maelstrom that is The Rolling Stones in all their sometimes heavy-handed glory.Wonderfully entertaining stories unfold throughout this incredible journey as the outlaws
in love march like kings, across the decadent sprawling lawns of
mighty America.Pure zeitgeist.Great stuff.
After reading this book you just wanna'play 'Exile on Main St.'
at serious volume and wish that you never had to go to work again.(Oh'well..)
Stones Use STP In Their Tanks To Tour America!!!.......2004-07-04
Why would anyone want to read a book about a tour that took place more than 30 years ago, in support of what is arguably the Rolling Stones most overrated album?? (Yes, Exile on Main Street does have some very good material, and excellent performances, but the "bathroom" (read: poor) sound quality, heralded by too many critics as being "influential" does not hold up well after all these years. Some of us would like to understand the lyrics, please!) Because the book is very well written by a good, observant, refreshingly unbiased journalist, and because like Jim Bouton's baseball classic Ball Four, S.T.P. was one of the first books that spawned an entire genre of rock books about specific bands. Many of the episodes still hold interest today, particularly the Playboy Mansion scenes in Chicago, and the details of the bands arrest and subsequent release (arranged by then-Mayor of Boston Kevin White to prevent a riot) from a Rhode Island jail: the Stones were supposed to be playing a concert at the very moment they were incarcerated. Many interesting characters stand out as well, particularly Truman Capote, Princess Lee Radziwill, and Jagger himself. One thing I feel must be noted: If you are younger than fortysomething, you may be surprised at the sheer amount of ANGER felt by many of the kids, who were just itching to clash with police. In many ways, that was typical of the times, and thankfully, for the most part, such behavior would not be tolerated today. In sum, if you are a Stones fan, or a fan of great rock writing, get S.T.P. ASAP. Trust me, like the namesake gas treatment, it'll put a tiger in your tank!!!
*Richards*, the man's name is *Richards*.......2004-02-18
The first hundred or so pages are so fixated on Mick Jagger that you wonder if Mr Greenfiel is ever going to notice that the Rolling Stones consist of way more than a frontman. But once he finally does realize that - apparently a concert or two was enough to convince him - it's a pretty good read. There are some obvious inaccuracies (including mistaking butterflies for doves); and the stuff about the people and events orbiting around the Stones on this tour is sometimes overlong. Some of it, though, works nicely to bring back the atmosphere of the times.
It's unfortunate that Mr Greenfiel didn't have the courtesy to correct Keith's surname in this re-edition - who cares how the publicists were misspelling it at the time?! That grates, as do the lame attempts to capture regional pronunciation. Just talk normal, please, Mr Greenfiel! And repeat after me: it's *Richards*.
In other words: Stanley Booth's _True Adventures of the Rolling Stones_ is miles better - really fine writing, a superior grasp of what the Stones are about, *and* he knows what Keith's surname is - but this one'll do between re-readings of Stanley's.
ROLLING WITH THE STONES '72.......2003-05-04
After being out of print for almost 30 years, I'm glad to see S.T.P. finally available. I've seen and heard references to it for years. I almost broke down and bought a used copy of it on eBay several times. I'm sure glad I waited (and saved a lot of money). While not focused entirely on the Stones themselves, this book does a good job of giving you the flavor of what it was like to tour North America in the summer of '72 with the Stones (and assorted hangers-on) as they brought Exile On Main Street (and Stevie Wonder) to the masses. I couldn't make it all the way through without pulling out my DVD copy of C.S. Blues (the making of which was mentioned in the book). A great look back at the Stones in their prime.
