Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2006-03-17

I picked up this book since I'm a fan of magic and especially Penn and Teller, but was rather disappointed with this book.

The book seems big because the book itself is meant to be a trick for your friends. You can leave it laying out on the coffee table without worrying about someone picking it up and learning all your secrets. That is, unless they read the whole thing. Parts of the book are printed just to fool your friends and some tricks don't work unless you know the secrets.

Many of the tricks mentioned you won't be able to do yourself and are more of Penn and Teller revealing the secret behind cutting a snake or making cockroaches appear. There are very few tricks that you yourself will be able to make use of. Included with the book (or should be) are several aids used in some of the tricks, making the book feel more like a child's toy. One item that is quite useful is a book made specifically for the trick of mind reading, or making it appear that you can read minds. Although, it only works if you can casually leave the book on a table and casually say, "Let's use this one."

In all, I found the book to not really live up to the standards of Penn and Teller and only found two or three tricks that might have actually worked on friends. If you're looking for a book full of tricks to really decieve your friends, keep looking.

3 out of 5 stars HEY PENN AND TELLER FANS!.......2005-03-22

I bought this book new, and I did get all the extra stuff that came with the book. Trust me, the book itself is all ya need. other than that, the exrta book doesnt have anything really important in it. if anything at all. The book is the most important thing. All you need is just a pair of red and blue 3d glasses for the rest of the stuff in the book if you read the first couple pages you will understand. It is a strange book due to the fact that the majority of the book is just to fool your friends. It doesn have great stories and some good tricks though. out of all 3 books, this is my least favorite but still one of my top 3 all time favs because of the authors.

3 out of 5 stars If you buy, make sure it comes with ALL accessories!.......2003-03-10

Please take note that this book originally came with a packet of trick accessories and another, smaller book. If you buy this book used and all you get is the main book, then many of the tricks in the book will be useless to you. Such is the case that happened with me.

Penn and Teller are great writers (and showmen, of course) and you will thoroughly enjoy their stories, but there's just something missing when you are not able to perform all the tricks they mention because you don't have all the original materials. The mind-reading trick sounds so wonderful, but without the extra book you can't perform it, for example.

Another impossible trick is the very first one where they tell you to call a phone number. I called it and was directed to the voicemail of someone within Random House (not the publishers of this book, btw). Being that the book came out in 1989 it looks like Penn and Teller have long given up that particular number.

Maybe in a dusty old bookstore, sometime in the future, I might be lucky enough to stumble across this complete package, but until then, if ever, I can only wonder at what might have been.

...

4 out of 5 stars "Humiliate people you claim to respect." - Penn Jillette.......2002-11-13

This was Penn & Teller's first book, and they made the actual book a prank in itself. Now, I won't give anything away, but the book is designed to drive anybody who reads it "the wrong way" batty. Plus, there are stories about how they did a lot of their tricks, including the infamous "cockroach trick" that made David Letterman leave his show. Plus lots of other mean stuff to pull on unsuspecting people.

Oh, and there's also the full text of the screenplay for "Penn & Teller Get Killed." Here's hoping you have good eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Annoying.......2001-04-08

I'm not that familiar with Penn & Teller. If not for my younger sister, I probably wouldn't even know who they are. I picked up a used copy of this book because I thought it would be funny. I enjoyed the descriptions of the cockroach trick, the 3 of clubs eyeballs trick, and the cutting the snake in half trick. The pictures were delightful. The cruel tricks reminded me of some I used to read about in "Children's Digest" when I was a kid. (If you, too, have friends who are too smart for them, you can still amuse yourself by imagining stupid persons you loathe falling for them.) I think I like the personality test trick the best. The short stories weren't bad. I'm torn between "The Best Magic Trick I Ever Saw" and "Invisible Thread" for my favorite. The annoying part is all those pages of red type on light grey paper with a dark grey swirl design smack in the middle. They are HARD to read. I had to keep a finger on the line so I wouldn't lose track. I'm not sure the authors expected anyone to read them because they're chock full of typos. However, if you do take the trouble, you'll read "Penn & Teller get killed", more cruel tricks on video, a strange tribute to Harry Houdini, the "Sharpening Stone", another version of "Invisible Thread", and "Penn & Teller at the Ritz". These are definitely very strange men. Happy Hunting for a copy.

Dear Friends: American Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918 collects more than 100 portraits--from daguerreotypes to cartes des visites and early photographic postcards--depicting affectionate male friendships whose precise nature, whether platonic or sexual, will never be known. Editor David Deitcher, who teaches art and critical theory at the Cooper Union, reflects on the history of these images and their possible significance. In the late Victorian period, he notes, men commonly established intimate, passionate friendships with other men, and often "posed for photographers holding hands, entwining limbs, or resting in the shelter of each other's accommodating bodies, innocent of the suspicion that such behavior would later arouse." These photographs have long been collected by gay men, for whom they are vehicles of longing "for the self-validation that comes from having a history to refer to; longing for a comforting sense of connection with others--past as well as present--whose experience mirrors one's own." Nevertheless, Deitcher reminds readers, because almost all the subjects of these photographs are anonymous, "they are powerless to communicate anything more than the following: This is how these men looked on that day when they sat for the photographer." But what these photographs prove is ultimately far less interesting or engaging than what they are: tender, funny, strange relics of a time when public expressions of love between men were freer and more natural than they are in our own ostensibly more liberated age. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Dear Friends is the first book to demonstrate how common it was for 19th-century American men to commemorate intimate friendships with a visit to the local photographer. Reproducing more than 100 never-before-published vintage photographs, this groundbreaking book provides evidence of a kind of physical intimacy between men that challenges the conventional view of the Victorian era. David Deitcher's provocative text combines historical research, social observation, and pictorial analysis to explore the nature of same-sex affection between men during the period.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Concept, Awkwardly Executed.......2005-12-20

If this were just a book of "photographs of men together" without the heavy-handed, ponderous stretches of the author's awkward, long-winded prose between photos, it would be an enormous improvement. Deitcher's text reads like a proposal for selling the book to a publisher - I lost count how many times he states things like, "this book is..." and then describes the book you are holding in your hand.

Newsflash: We're already reading the book. Stop describing what you intend to accomplish with it and just do it, already.

I liked when he used quotes and excerpts that were contemporary to the times the photos were taken, which give the reader a better idea of what life and society was like then. But there was too little of this, and too much conjecture on his part, and, yes, I know it's his book, but too much personalizing. I wasn't interested in knowing that the author, as a young man, fantasized about the photos of swimmers he saw in American Red Cross "Junior Lifesaving" manuals (page 50). Rather, I was a little creeped out, and unsure why this very personal anecdote is included in his book.

Here's a passage that kind of sums up my problem with his writing - also from page 50:

"Today we can swim in seas of homoerotica and X-rated porn. It should not be taken as a detraction from the pleasures of porn to underscore the guilelessness and ingenuity with which image-starved gay men and lesbians once perused everyday representations for sexual excitement; nor to admit to mourning the passage of such creative strategies for (homo)sexual survival as one of the costs we have had to pay for replacing gay subcultural ingenuity with gay culture, tout court. There are, of course, other related trade-offs in which one thing is lost at the price of another being gained. Ultimately, this book provides evidence of a parallel trade-off that results from the historical transformation of the social meaning of same-sex affection from a nineteenth-century tradition of romantic friendship and comradely love, and its physical expression among men who posed for photographers holding hands, entwining limbs, or resting in the shelter of each other's accomodating bodies, innocent of the suspicion that such behavior would later arouse."

And he goes ON like this! I defy anyone to get any sort of cognizable meaning out of all this academic double-talk. I'm left wondering if the photos came up short and he had a larger page-count to fill because he says basically the same thing over and over throughout the course of the book, and it never gets any more straight-forward or lucid than what you just read above.

So - in short: Liked the concept, loved the photos, was NOT a fan of the text.

5 out of 5 stars Dear Friends: American Photographs of Men Together, 1840-1918.......2005-10-04

An excellent gift for a gay male friend.

4 out of 5 stars Words worth of pictures.......2003-01-06

Alas - I wish I could have given this book a top mark, but it is not to be. What kept me from doing so were not the pictures, but the limply connotating articles that accompany them. In this day and age of multiple choice selections the author may be forgiven to think that readers (or viewers alike) would be unable to detect what matters in the details of an image.

However I found it annoying to have a visual sensation reproduced (and that means interpreted) by often sensually inept words. Inept, because these saccharine follies detract from what should have really mattered: a distinction in time and culture.

The age which produced the spirit of these pictures has been edited out of our consciousness - the fact that no man's and no woman's sexuality has to be pre-defined is what interests now. The fact that things were different once( but how so?)also interests now.

This book is very much a child of the spirit of its times, ours. As such it contrasts what we have come to struggle with: the rigidly stereotypical images we have created of our senses and genders. In the same vein it also does what has become 'de rigueur', drown those things which speak for themselves, instead of understatedly enhancing them.

The yearning for acceptance; the proof to show that things were not always as we have them now is, I think, the main missile behind this book. Looking at the other reviews, it is clear that such a search is on, now. For bringing those images to mind, letting people know tha no-one is an island, even over the centuries, the book should be lauded.

However - I should recommend that Mr Deitcher begin work forthwith on a book showing us picture of soldierly love from the two world wars, a field that has not been explored to depth.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully-Written Book.......2002-09-08

I'm not sure where I heard about this book, but I am grateful to the author for writing it. The photographs Deitcher describes and provides for us are beyond words. They provide such a wonderful insight into male friendships/relationships in the 19th Century and are very interesting to look at and ponder. This book is of particular interest to me as I'm currently writing a novel about a great uncle of mine and I have several photographs of him with other men, some more defined than others. But it isn't just the photographs that makes the book so excellent, it is Deitcher's words that bring everything to life. I was interested in his analyses of the relationships and that he is honest and forthcoming with the fact that we can never really know for certain what these photos represent, particularly when examined within the context of 19th Century social constructions.

3 out of 5 stars Lovely Photos But..........2006-10-17

"I've compiled this deck of cards to let you know that inspiration can be cultivated and be a driving force throughout life--rather than showing up every now and then and just as mysteriously disappearing, seemingly independent of your desires. Inspiration is for everyone! It isn't reserved for high-profile creative geniuses in the arts and sciences--it's inherent in your Divine birthright." - Wayne Dyer

Featuring excerpts from the book of the same name, the Inspiration Your Ultimate Calling deck contains 50 cards featuring beautiful nature photographs--flowers, sky, sea, forests, rockscapes, and more. One side shows the image and an inspirational suggestion, while the other elaborates on the particular theme.

Here are some of Dyer's words of inspiration found in this deck:

* Believe in Universal Timing - You must believe in a Universe that's created and guided by an intelligence greater than your ego--a Universe where there can be no accidents. When an idea's time has come, it can't be stopped. And the reverse of this is true: An idea whose time hasn't come can't be created.

* See the Perfection of the Plan - Why not look at your entire life as the unfolding of a plan you participated in before you arrived here? By doing so, you'll shift from blaming others and circumstances to being responsible and feeling your purpose. Whatever shows up in your life is a part of the perfection of this plan.

* Be Inspired - When you're inspired, you're not judging others or yourself. You aren't bothered by behaviors or attitudes that in uninspired moments are frustrating. When you're inspired, your heart sings in appreciation for every breath; and you're tolerant, joyful, and loving.

* Connect with the Universe - Give yourself permission to get away so that you can camp in the outdoors; swim in a river, lake, or ocean; sit by an open fire; ride on horseback; or ski down a mountain slope. Wherever you live, you're only a few hours (or even moments!) away from being connected to the entire Universe.

* Act on Your Inspiration - Regardless of how absurd your inner callings might seem, they're authentically yours. They don't have to make sense to anyone else. The willingness to listen and act on your inspiration, independent of the opinion of others, is imperative.

While many of the excerpts found in the Inspiration Your Ultimate Calling deck are indeed wise and uplifting, some seem contradictory--much like the book itself. For example, some quotes make God to be somewhere "out there" (like in nature), while others seem to affirm that the Eternal is within. If All That Is resides inside, why would we have to travel outdoors to access it? And, if all people and circumstances are, on some level, a part of Perfection/God, how is it that some elements are "uninspiring" and negative while others are "inspiring" and good? Who makes this arbitrary delineation, anyway?

Another contradiction arises with the topics of living in the Now versus excavating and evaluating the past. One card says "By training your memory, you'll be able to return to early childhood recollections of love, peace, and joy--and back even further to your origination", but another card admonishes "Thinking about where you've been on what you did wrong in the past are impediments to an inspired life."

While most of the cards in the Inspiration Your Ultimate Calling Deck are breathtaking, the photos are marred (in my opinion) by artificial white butterflies arranged within each image. Some of the photos are so arresting they'd be *excellent* for meditation upon the theme, but the cheesy white butterflies detract from contemplation.

Overall, fans of the book will no doubt enjoy this deck. However, I find the information a bit superficial and some design elements distracting (namely the white butterflies and circles made of dotted lines interspersed at the bottom of the card), so it's not a deck that I would use.

    Book Description

Since the spring of 2001, millions of people worldwide (1.2 million in the U.S. alone) have shown Mom how much they love her by giving her the remarkable New York Times bestselling book Dear Mom. Now, it's Dad's turn.

Perfect for those who struggle to find the right words to tell Dad just how they feel, Dear Dad is a masterful blend of poignant pictures and special thoughts that will convey to Dad how much he means. BTG's witty and whimsical, yet moving, pairing of thoughts and images will effortlessly communicate your appreciation and love for all Dad's efforts over the years. He points out that dads might sometimes be far from perfect, but by embodying the fatherly paradox of strength through gentleness, they are still and always the beloved anchor, safely holding fast to all that "family" means today and in the future.

Internationally successful author Bradley Trevor Greive, whose previous seven books have already sold more than 10 million copies worldwide, has again captured magic in book form. With its infectious humor, poetic insights, carefully chosen words, and charming animal photographs, Dear Dad gets straight to the heart of the role fathers play in our lives. Dear Dad is proof that the most truthful, meaningful things are best expressed simply, and with a chuckle.

Kids of almost any age can appreciate the brightly-colored, mind-capturing illustrations/photographs, and the spiritual message of the Bhagavad-gita is presented at just the right reading level for elementary-grade readers to understand. All in all, the presentation is very attractive and will appeal to any child, anywhere. This book provides a great yet subtle way to introduce good values and principles of good character into the minds of our children, as well as a healthy respect for the concept of a supreme, loving God.

    5 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......1999-07-26

This is a beautiful book for all ages. My only criticism is the children do not have on any tilak.

    Book Description

A funny and moving story told through the letters of two women nurturing a friendship as they are separated by distance, experience, and time.

Close friends and former college roommates, Hilary Liftin and Kate Montgomery promised to write when Kate's Peace Corps assignment took her to Africa.  Over the course of a single year, they exchanged an offbeat and moving series of letters from rural Kenya to New York City and back again.

Kate, an idealistic teacher, meets unexpected realities ranging from poisonous snakes and vengeful cows to more serious hazards: a lack of money for education; a student body in revolt.  Hilary, braving the singles scene in Manhattan, confronts her own realities, from unworthy suitors to job anxiety and first apartment woes.  Their correspondence tells--with humor, warmth, and vivid personal detail--the story of two young women navigating their twenties in very different ways, and of the very special friendships we are sometimes lucky enough to find.

I'm going through the process of applying with the Peace Corps. I loved the candid nature of this book, and I found that it said a lot about friendship as well as the Peace Corps. This book is a quick read, and hard to put down. I appreciated having a window into one person's PC experience. And, I enjoyed identifying with the close friendship shared by these two women.

A great book. I loved reading the letters between the two friends and their different styles of writing. I hope their friendship will always endure. I look foward to reading more by both. I've already read Candy and Me by Hilary. I hope to hear more from K8.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling, insightful, and funny........2002-11-23

This is about as perfect as a book can be. I won't recap the concept; plenty of other reviewers have summed it up. But I want to express my unbounded admiration for this book. I would never have imagined that a set of letters between friends could make for fascinating, hard-to-put-down reading, but this set of letters does. In spades. These women's lives are just plain interesting--Kate's, in part, because she's in a situation most of us know little or nothing about and Hilary's, in part, because she's in a situation most of us know all too well. There's more going on here, though, than just the fact of being interesting. The friendship between these two comes alive on the page; the insights about the world and about each other that the women reveal are meaningful; the wit each writer possesses is sharp and on target. I loved the book. I'm giving it to everyone I know for Christmas because they're all going to love it, too.

3 out of 5 stars Not as absorbing as I had expected.......2002-09-30

I was a bit disappointed in this book. I love corresponding with others, and I looked forward to learning about Hilary and Kate by reading their letters. I felt that something was missing and I cannot quite put my finger on it.

The book was short and I think what I had been looking for was a longer narrative. Kate and Hilary's friendship certainly is one of a kind, and it was nice to have a look at their confidences and challenges.

Overall, I vote this book 3.5 stars of 5, as the glimpses of Kenya were poignant and interesting, and I did find Kate and Hilary's relationship intriguing. The story was of real life, so perhaps the only thing wrong was that I have read too much fiction in the past, and this story was reflective of how the world really works.

Two old friends, who also happen to be two of England's best known gardeners--correspond for two years in this absorbing and heart-warming book. The conversation was intended to be about their respective gardens and nurseries, and the reader who loves gardens will be richly rewarded. But the correspondence ranges much further--to music, food, family, friends, colleagues, and, inevitably , the weather. Beth Chatto's luminous intelligence and courageous openness set off the forthright and irrepressible Christopher Lloyd. This is a book about love, life, and plants, and a real winner.

5 out of 5 stars From a dear young friend..........2006-04-16

I went on a retreat and was given this book at the end. Over the past few months and months I have read this book and gone through it. John Paul II was my hero and therefore this book especially struck with me.

Each week there is a quotation from both Pope John Paul II and the bible. Then there is a small reflection which reads like he is actually talking to you. Then, following the reflection is a prayer, and a suggestion on how to live out the faith in the comming week.

This book has really helped to change my perspectives on certain things. It is very uplifting and inspires young people, such as myself, to live the words JPII spoke when he said 'be not afraid'.

4 out of 5 stars Review of "Dear Friend".......2001-04-27

This well-written and well-researched book is important for anyone interested in painting at the turn of the century, in the position of woman artists at that time, or in Paula Modersohn-Becker herself. It also offers insights into the life and psyche of the famous poet Rainer Maira Rilke. Modersohn-Becker suffers from being known primarily though "Requiem for a Friend," a poem written about her by Rilke, whose view is colored by his own needs and beliefs. Torgersen shows that far from only having made a good beginning, as Rilke claimed, Modersohn-Becker had developed a style of her own and had created a number of arresting and original paintings. Rilke also claimed that in attempting to reconcile marriage and a career in art, Modersohn-Becker had chosen wrongly. Torgersen traces Modersohn-Becker's handling of her husband's attempt to assert authority over her, and shows that she had convinced him to allow space for her art in their marriage. This, too, was a remarkable achievement for her time. Art historians and feminists ought to read this book.
