Book Description
Beginning with studio practices and safety rules, this information-packed handbook is appropriate for both newcomers and experienced dyers but assumes that readers have a serious interest in textile design. An overview of dyeing starts with fibers and fabrics and discusses all aspects of the dyes favored by textile studios—fiber reactive, acid, vat, and disperse—before explaining discharging, screen printing, monoprinting, stamping, stenciling, resist dyeing, dévoré, and painting. Would-be fabric artists are advised along the way to identify a personal approach to dyeing—free spirit? rule-follower?—and color photographs of work by today's top fiber artists elucidate prevailing styles. Recipes and techniques are accompanied by step-by-step instructions with photographs, and a concealed spiral binding allows the book to lie flat. Ten appendices include a worksheet for recording chemicals, procedures, and costs for all projects; a guide to washing fabric; descriptions of stock solutions, thickeners, and steaming; a metric conversion table; and a guide to water temperatures.
Customer Reviews:
So much, much more than I expected!!!.......2007-09-25
Others have already related the key points about this book. I just want to further confirm for everyone looking to buy it that this author really did an EXCELLENT job. She obviously is a art and TECHNICAL expert in this field. She could've taken less time and put out a book that would've gotten her a solid 4.5-star rating. Instead she obviously put in twice the time and ended up with a 10-star book. She gives you all the details that people serious about trying complicated crafts look for but rarely find without studying in the studio of a professional. I just picked this up from the NEW BOOKS rack at the library because I am generally interested in the subjected. Like the one person so far who has given her a lower rating, it did make me think that this is probably too difficult for me. But on the other hand, she has many photos showing the possibilities of what I might be able to accomplish if I did try and it's very seductive. Nothing very special worth accomplishing comes easily and that seems to also apply to fabric art. I also appreciate the thoughtfulness of her making the binding a spiral so the pages lay perfectly flat for easy reference while you follow the directions. If I decide to seriously try this craft, it will be this book that I buy and I doubt I'd even need to buy another one ever.
Throw away your notes - this is all you need!.......2007-09-04
This book has enabled me to recycle ALL of my class and workshop notes and just use this book - it's all there and in great detail. (now I have space for MORE books)
Wonderful book!.......2007-07-18
Holly Brackmann's new book The Surface Designer's Handbook is long over-due and I have ordered it as the textbook for all my fibers classes. As soon as it arrived my students all wanted their own personal copy so several of them purchased it outright just on sight alone. The spiral binding is excellent and the extent of the techniques covered is wonderful. I teach both beginners and advanced fibers students and this book has everything we need as a textbook.
I use it myself for my own work and find it very helpful, well organized and thorough. The information about making color cards with diluted MX dye on watercolor paper is worth the selling price all by itself. It is a technique I knew nothing about and I am thrilled to learn about it. It has saved hours and hours of dye testing time.
In my classes we had been using Kate Wells' book Fabric Dyeing and Printing and prior to that, Proctor and Lew's Surface Design for Fabric. Now, 16 years later, Holly's excellent book has arrived and is the handbook of the hour. It is up to date, comprehensive and thorough, and should be in everyone's library that works with dyes, textile paints and cloth. It improves on and surpasses every handbook published to date and encompasses a massive amount of information.
I look forward to using it in my classes for many years to come and I salute Holly for the enormous amount of work that went into creating this book. She has provided a gift for the entire surface design community both here and abroad.

Master Craftman Level Surface Design.......2007-07-14
This book is so complete that you nearly do not need any other books for working with surface design, dyeing and all processes related to fibre arts.
Congratualtions to the author, Holly Brackman for putting together the most comprehensive manual ever.
too much to digest.......2007-06-30
I had hoped for a book that had practical suggestions for using surface design in mixed media and art quilt work. So much of this book is devoted to very technical dye processes that I find only a small portion of it is actually of help to me. If I wasn't already a bit afraid of dying my own fabric, I certainly am now!

Book Description
Early textile dyers signed oaths that they would not reveal any of the process. Fortunately, author Carolyn Dahl openly shares the secrets of dyeing, painting, and patterning beautiful cloth she has gleaned in art schools. This guide is the next best thing to having a master artist in the studio.
Entertaining stories awaken memories of childhood coloring books, leaf prints, iron-on designs, and the tie-dyed T-shirts most of us experienced at some point in our lives. Readers will be inspired as they follow step-by-step photographs and instructions full of hints and secrets for using luminous color to transform white cloth into artistic masterpieces. Connoisseurs of the decorative arts and those who are merely curious about the fabrics they wear and use in everyday life will find much to interest them.
* Produce successful results without an instructor * Author relates own experiences, telling why a technique is done, giving more control to the dyer * Contains lots of fresh ideas
Customer Reviews:
CLEAR and PRECISE.......2007-09-03
I think it is the clarity and precision with which the author presents her ideas. Very good resource material for my daughter. She uses it!
Great Addition to My Fabric Painting Resource Library.......2006-03-30
I've already collected a number of painting/dyeing/surface design books for working with fabric, and this makes an excellent addition. I don't think it could stand alone as the be-all and end-all, but it is comprehensive in the sense that the author presents all kinds of ideas and inspiration, as well as photographs and instructions/resources. The one thing I might have found more helpful would be greater detail in the steps she took to achieve certain results. Although she does offer descriptions, it seems that sometimes steps and/or details of the process are missing.
Explains why.......2006-01-08
This book is particularly strong on explaining the theories behind the different fabric types and why they react as they do to dyes and paints. Some of the instructions are very clear and good photos of stamps and other printing techniques. I found the finished items and cloth a bit messy - not really my style. But a good addition to the library.
Comprehensive.......2005-10-05
This book is wonderfully comprehensive of the latest methods for embellishing with dyes and inks. I would have liked to have seen other artists results with her techniques, but I find the technical information more than compensates.
Wow!.......2005-09-22
I have read many "how to books" that are advertisments for their
products or books bragging about their wonderful artwork but this book tells all! It is very easy to understand and tells
exactly how to get the results wanted. What a refreshing change!

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE IT !!!.......2007-07-22
I almost didn't purchase this book because I have several others on fabric books. Boy, would I have missed out! This books not only has beautiful photography but the examples are unique and the instructions flawless. One of my favorite sections is CHAPTER FOUR: THE GALLERY which shows so many examples of fabric books created by other artists for inspiration. In fact, I was so inspired that I couldn't wait to make a book for a dear friend's birthday using a combination of several different designs. This is not one of those books that you read and then put away. It stays on my studio table and I am already starting my next book. My fabric art library is pretty extensive but this book is by far the best when it comes to creating and embellishing fabric journals and books. I love it!
Create Your Own BEAUTIFUL journals.......2007-04-06
When I ordered this book, I thought it would be one of those books that had a beautiful cover but no real substance. This book is amazing, and I've already learned a lot in the short time I've owned it.
My gold standard for purchasing craft books!.......2006-10-07
This is an exceptionally well written and designed book. I'm impressed with the detailed instructions and accompanying illustrations, the photographs, and the layout. The author even anticipates questions that could come up for the reader/crafter during fabric book construction. I really appreciate this helpful style of writing. The fantastic photographs make it possible to see exactly what is being described. Even the order in which the chapters and sections are presented is well thought out.
This is destined to be one of my most treasured AND used books! In fact, I was inspired to get started as soon as I opened the book for the first time and saw the writer's/artist's work!
My absolute favourite guide to cloth journals.......2006-07-24
Pam Sussman's book covers the most basic design details - for example, page sizing - in a way that makes them interesting and inspirational. She goes on to more complicated, but necessary, techniques such as various edgings and bindings, with a natural, easy to follow progression of ideas and skills.
The book is, as one would expect, lavishly and beautifully illustrated with Sussman's work, but, unlike some other craft books, the illustrations are matched perfectly with the text and the photography displays techniques to perfection.
I have an embarrassingly large number of craft books, and this certainly numbers among the best.
So many ideas, so little time.......2006-04-09
I read this book cover-to-cover and was so enthralled by the illustrations and color photos of finished products that I had to start over again and try to focus on one project at a time. The How-Tos are presented in enough detail to help beginners through a myriad of strange and wonderful terms and tricks.

Customer Reviews:
The Complete Book of Silk Screen Printing.......2007-09-06
An interesting historical look at the nuts and bolts of screen printing in the early times. Fascinating for history buffs but of limited practical use in today's world.
At its original publication it would have provided an incredible insight in to the then modern techniques.
Screen Printing History.......2002-09-19
If you want a good history from the 60's of screen printing then this is the book for you. It was first published in 1963 and hasn't been updated since. Old black and white pictures are included that would be seen in an old Popular Mechanics to include the hand drawn illustrations. If your looking to review or learn new techniques or just refresh your memory this is not the book to get. I'm starting my own business and after being out of it for a few years I was wanting a refresher book I could look to. This was not the one.
Complete Step by Step Process.......2001-03-09
This book gives a clear and complete picture of every aspect of press operation and silk screen technique-from individually operated manual presses to modern automatic presses capable of turning out 2000-3000 impressions an hour-and indicates the subject, this volume includes practically everything of importance known about the silk screen process.
don't waste your time.......2000-02-16
if you are looking for a D.I.Y. book on silk screening look elsewhere. this is more of a historical review of the process. the book was copywritten in the '60's so there isn't any "new technology" in the content.

Customer Reviews:
GREAT ideas for a different kind of quilt.......2007-04-16
This book is full of ideas for quilts that are a bit out of the ordinary and far from the traditional. The full color photos show the finished quilts which are a great inspiration. The varied projects included inside the pages give insight to many other crafting avenues as well as quilting. I own many quilt and craft books, but epspecially like the personal touch that these projects afford the quilter/crafter.
Printing on Fabric---Great Fun.......2004-11-28
I purchased this book, because I was looking for a hobby. Something to use my computer and still be crafty. I experimented briefly with Scrapbooking, but it didn't suit my personality, but this book seemed to. The major problem was the inability to locate the inkjet fixative in my local stores, but after going through the book, it told me how to buy the supplies online, which I did. I did a test project and it worked perfectly. I have not performed any of the projects listed in the book yet, but I've used the book as a guideline and have created my own projects. This is great fun, even though it stresses the HP Printer, it works equally well with my Canon Printer. You can buy inkjet printable fabric sheets in the stores, but I liked this because I am only limited by the printing size of my printer. I can use any fabric, not just the pre cut sizes.

Book Description
Introduction to Polymers, Second Edition discusses the synthesis, characterization, structure, and mechanical properties of polymers in a single text, giving approximately equal emphasis to each of these major topics. It has thus been possible to show the interrelationship of the different aspects of the subject in a coherent framework. The book has been written to be self-contained, with most equations fully derived and critically discussed. It is supported by a large number of diagrams and micrographs and is fully referenced for more advanced reading. Problems have been supplied at the end of each chapter so that students can test their understanding and practice the manipulation of data.
Customer Reviews:
Best place to start for polymers.......2001-07-07
An excellent and a must read for anyone with an interest in polymeric materials. It easily is the best introductory book on the subject and I'd recommend it to all students - believe it - i've been taught by the authors! I only wish they'd also write on more specialized topics in Polymer Science.
THE introductory text for polymers.......2000-09-24
This is a lovely introductory text for polymer science, hitting on all the major concepts of characterization, structure, mechanical properties, and synthesis. Topics are covered very concisely, but with sufficient detail to be useful in several different graduate level courses on polymers. Great background for understanding Flory-Huggins theory, chain dimensions. And an excellent price as well! Just my opinions as a grad student in some polymers courses...
Interesting Basic Mechanical properties.......2000-03-31
This is an interesting introducing to basic properties on polymers. Specialy chapter five, wich talks about mechanical properties. I would recommend this book as a guide text for an introductory course to polymers, specily on mechanical properties. The mathematical treatment is just enough, without unnecesary ecuations but clear and simple.

Harold Linton, Chair / Department of Art & Visual Technology / GMU.......2007-05-02
Way Cool! Proud to boast about this great project! Kendall Buster and Paula Crawford have tackled a very difficult and taboo subject with wit and wisdon, keen insight and thoughtfulness that transforms the culture of studio art education into a clear discussion of the artistry of creative presentation and all of the thinking, doing, and planning that support it. The authors unravel a mystery for art students to ingest that can only have positive impact on their the work. Artists who are eager for depth, breadth, and better ability to plan and present their ideas to others - this is a must read! The content is completely applicable to all art discipline areas. From painting to sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, design, photography - it cuts across all areas of the visual arts and binds the conceptual with the end product in an engaging discussion of the ways and means of creative evidence, philosophy, and discussion. An excellent required and affordable text for studio classes across the board! Harold Linton, Chair Art & Visual Technology, George Mason University.
Critique of The Critique Handbook.......2006-11-04
I am an adjunct photography professor at a private college. This book was used as a text for a joint workshop on The Critique for the art department of our school and another local college. Given the complexity of the subject matter, this book does a good job of covering the basics of an art school critique. I particularly appreciated the discussion regarding the role of faculty and the personal baggage we sometimes forget we can bring to the party. It's impossible to cover all the possible permutations of The Critique, but this book does a fine job of highlighting the peculiarities of several art disciplines and the details that should be addressed. It gives you a springboard to make the conversion even if your discipline isn't specifically covered.
If you teach art or hold critiques in your class, I believe you will find this book very helpful.
My only quibble is the type size for my aging eyes. Don't be fooled by the physical size of this book. It may be compact but it makes up for it with density.
The Critique Handbook.......2006-09-17
This is a well-written, insightful and important manual that every professor, teacher, curator, gallery owner, student and professional artist should have on their bookshelf. It IS extremely expensive, but worth every single dime. There is a million bucks worth of info between its covers! Run and place your order...I'm glad I did!
The Critique Handbook.......2006-06-30
This book is very specific about how to conduct a critique and how to survive one without becoming emotionally involved. Although it only discusses the traditional fine arts,i.e. painting and sculpture, the techniques involved can be easily adapted to othere less trasditional forms of art, i.e. fiber art or photography. A very good book.
A terrific book!.......2006-03-26
What a fantastic idea! How is it that something as essential and ubiquitous as the studio critique had not been examined in this way before? This book takes on the task brilliantly. "The Critique Handbook" is a wonderful mixture of how-to manual, theoretical analysis, irreverent debunker and basic gameplan. The authors' analysis of how to make the best use of the critique applies both to those giving the critique as well as to those receiving them. While students will find the book quite useful in learning how to negotiate the critique and find the best uses for the information presented to them there, professors and other professionals will also find much to think about in the authors' analysis of what makes a critique helpful and harmful. And, delightfully, the authors are not afraid to take on the sacred cows of the profession. Any art professor will appreciate the witty and deadly portraits of their colleagues sketched by Buster and Crawford in their analysis of the types that can be found in the artist's studio.

Book Description
Designing and Printing Textiles offers an overview of the researching, designing, and textile-making process. Lavishly illustrated and accessibly written, it's packed with invaluable information for textile students, designers, and craftworkers.
This book follows the creative process of designing and printing textile patterns, from the initial sourcing of ideas to the final high-quality creation. It provides ideas and practical information at a level easily accessible to textile students and designers, but also to novices who would like to learn more. Throughout, the text is enhanced by an exciting range of images, from historical surface-pattern designs and textiles to the work of contemporary designers. Topics include: advice on generating ideas and expressing them visually; a cultural and historical background to surface-pattern design; experimental methods of working from paper onto fabric; and practical details on fabrics, equipment, and techniques for dying and printing.
June Fish teaches at London's Central St. Martins College for Art and Design.

Don't expect just a progressive 'how to' here.......2006-06-22
From ideas to finished, polished products, DESIGNING AND PRINT TEXTILES is for any textile artist who would understand how to hone a range of images and then translate them to textile form. Don't expect just a progressive 'how to' here, though instructions are such when necessary: also included as background history of surface-pattern design, analysis of pattern structures, tips on using experimental methods of working from paper onto fabric, and details on equipment and techniques for different dying and printing processes. June Fish is the senior dye tech at London's St. Martins College for Art and Design, so her insights and resources come from a practicing professional.

Less than Expected.......2006-11-03
While this book is great for people with absolutly no textile experiance, it was too basic for me. The pictures may spark your creativity but the techniques are simplistic and can be found by searching free on the net. Unless you are a beginer don't bother.
Buyer beware.......2005-04-08
Be warned: This book is an amalgamation of 'Colour and Design on Fabric' and 'Fabric Artistry' from the Singer Design series. I didn't discover this until it arrived here in New Zealand by which time it was too late and it wasn't worth the postage to send it all the way back to the US for a refund.
Wonderful creative inspiration!.......2004-04-05
I'm always looking for books to inspire me to creative something unique whether it is utilizing sewing or painting techniques. This book does both and more. I love the galleries provided in each chapter! Few books have inspired me to make notes of my ideas while I am reading, but this one did. On my first "run thru", I noted 8 different ideas and outfits to make. Now I've got to go get started! Great book!
Great Resource with Many Techniques A MUST read.......2003-09-25
I found this book to be a great resource and it has great color images and specific easy to follow instructions that can be used by both intermediate or beginner alike. Great gallery shots of award winning designers. I am an aspiring couture artist and have found that most books don't cover or illustrate high fashion techniques or projects and this one is the answer to my prayers!!! A must read
Worthwhile "Encyclopedia" of Techniques.......2002-06-13
There isn't anything earth-shattering in this book, but it is a good "all-in-one-place" resource for a variety of fiber arts techniques. Topics covered include: making wool felt, pinweaving, devore (FiberEtch), beading, needlelace, machine openwork, quilting and trapunto, various dyeing methods, and many others. The instructions are basic but clear and well-illustrated with photographs. Not a place to look for indepth instructions for any technique, but if you are looking for an overview, you'll really like this one. It's a great jumping off place to play with several techniques and see which ones you'd like to explore further. Those with more experience may find a new idea or two, but will probably be most interested in the fabulous galleries (one at the beginning of each of the books two sections - "Texture & Depth" and "Color & Design") of projects (mostly wearable art) by the contributors. These galleries are well worth a look; there's plenty of inspiration to be found.
