Customer Reviews:
An excellent basic guide to eBay.......2006-06-03
This is an excellent basic guide to buying and selling on eBay. Griff peppers his instruction with plenty of personal stories and anecdotes, has screen shots of what you'll see online in case you're not sitting at your computer while you're reading, and tells you probably more than you need to know to use eBay.
This book delivers what it promises: clear, easy-to-understand instruction on eBay.

author of the Online Shopper's Survival Guide and co-author of Make Big Profits on eBay
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2006-03-10
I read this book and it told me a lot about how to buy and sell items on eBay. It is a great help for anyone. It is very detailed on certain points like: Buy It Now, Bidding, Paying for Items, and many other points. I would definitely reccommend having a copy of this book on hand if you are going to buy or sell items on eBay.
well-written.......2006-01-26
4 stars for fullfilling its intended purposes. One lacking star for apparently disappointing readers for its lacking anticipated business pointers.
This book is obviously targeted toward eBay newbies, and for that purpose it makes a heck of a good job in providing both clarity and motivation. While at the same time being embedded with corporate self-marketing lines without being offensive.
It seems as though the author has retained a centered state of mind while writing this entire book. Even if the topics are basic, such as how to list items and packing items, it's being presented in an entertaining way and may well do a good job in hooking up new members to eBay. It's definitely a helpful place to start.
Since the intentions of the book are ambiguous however (it's not clear wether selling eBay or teaching people how to sell on ebay is the central purpose here), it's also reasonable to contend that level-wise, this is not the best book out there. But the quality of that level is yet high and consistent. Everything that's being taught in the book is easy to grasp and follow, and there's a certain underlying energy in terms of writing style that makes eBay selling look fun. Because of that this book does a very good job in marketing eBay (both as a selling enterprise, and its individual services) and in convincing readers to sign up for their own accounts. That's not an easy balance to achieve without being a hypocrite. But the author even promotes environmental responsibilites, which kind of defies the notion of being a hypocrite, such as being a mere greedy prick behind the smile. It's more than that.
So this is a good book, not only content-wise, but also motivation-wise.
Very basic. Good for beginners........2005-04-02
The book is very basic, along the lines of the Dummies series. There is a screenshot of everything, which makes the book long. If you are just starting out, the book is good because it is comprehensive. However, there is a high percentage of garbage in the book, such as detailed instructions on how to bookmark a page in a Web browser, and a couple chapters on how to write HTML. The book is mainly a how-to book, not a book with many advanced selling and buying tips.
After reading the top eBay books, below are my recommendations:
---Beginner with eBay and computers---
1. The Official eBay Bible
---eBay Seller---
1. Sell it on eBay
2. eBay Hacks
---Full-Time eBay Business (not for the casual seller)---
1. eBay Strategies
2. eBay Business the Smart Way
VISIT EBAY AND FORGET THE BOOK.......2005-01-24
Unless you are absolutely..and do mean ABSOLUTELY, completely new to eBay and have never even navigated the site, then this book might be somewhat useful. It instructs you on all you need to know about such as searching eBay, bidding, buying, paying, selling items, setting up your own eBay storefront, security and resolving issues, etc...it is a wealth of information.
But if you've been an eBay user, you already know most of this information already. There aren't any buried secrets to be found in the book. No "get rich quick" magic pill ideas. The fact is that all of this information and a LOT more can be found on the eBay site itself. EBay has done a marvelous job of putting all of this information on their website. You need only visit the help links to go to screens that will provide everything you need to know about bidding and buying.
Then there's the vast links of various sellers tools that teach you all about listing items, taking and uploading pictures, accepting payments, etc. What's made eBay so popular is the fact that is really is so very easy, step-by-step to use and anytime you get hung up there are a vast array of help screens, message boards, even Live, one-on-one help chats with eBay personnel you can use to help.
Perhaps it's nice having all of this info in one convenient play as opposed to navigating a lot of onscreen pages, but once you know where to get answers there's really not much need for the book.

Required Supplement to LabVIEW Documentation.......2007-10-01
This book fills in the yawning gaps of LabVIEW 8.xx's documentation and ambiguous and dense "HELP" sections. For example, as a retread LabVIEW user from over a decade ago, I looked for a simple step-by-step procedure to turn on, write, a single digital line. Just to turn on and off a single LED. The LabVIEW HELP returned many dozens of topics and forced me to read many extraneous topics to come to the conclusion that I was not going to find any help. Then, I tried to use the "easy" virtual instruments already made for the occassion, but the only one found after navigating through a thicket of unrelated virtual instruments was one which wrote a digital port of eight channels and no explanation of how to set it up to write one digital line. LabVIEW for Everyone... solved my problem and a whole lot more. This book is needed by anyone who is not an experienced LabVIEW programmer and who does not have the time or resources to attend training classes and wants to get started as soon as possible. Travis and Kring have created a readable and effective reference source for LabVIEW programmers. It is possibly the only book which addresses recent LabVIEW 8.xx software and truly does make it easy and fun.
A good introduction to LabView.......2007-08-26
While there is a a lot of good information of the NI website, I thought buying a book would be helpful as I needed to learn LabView quickly. I thought this book was very helpful and would definately be a good book for someone new to LabView. My only wish is that it would have more converage on the DAQ part. To me this is not only the key part of LabView, it is the only part that got me confused (and still does) at some points. Some additional coverage would have helped.
The Single Best Overall Book On LabVIEW.......2007-07-03
If you are a beginner to intermediate with LabVIEW, then the 3rd Edition is the single best book on LabVIEW available to you as of summer of 2007. If your budget only allows for one or a few books, put this one at the top of you list. I have read this book cover to cover, twice, and some sections in further detail as well as worked through all of the example code in detail.
I won't repeat the fine comments of others in their reviews. I speak from the perspective of 15+ years of working with LabVIEW, as a beginner in the early 1990s, a Certified LabVIEW instructor in the mid 90s, a small control and test system business founder and owner since the late 90s and an enthusiastic member of the LabVIEW community all during that time. I have bought most of the LabVIEW books that have ever been published as well as the (late) LTR newsletter and this 3rd Edition is the best book I have come across. If I were hiring someone new to do LabVIEW work, I'd give them a copy of this book first. The investment is a no brainer.
A great book for beginners.......2007-04-30
LabVIEW stands for: Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench. Unlike traditional programming languages (Basic, C, C++, Java, etc.), where you have to write text instructions line by line, LabVIEW is a graphical programming language. Here you create a program using a graphical notation; in other words, you interconnect functional blocks (or icons) via wires, through which data flow. LabVIEW is specifically designed for data acquisition (DAQ), data analysis, and presentation of results.
If you have never worked with LabVIEW, you are like me. First you have to acquire the basic concepts. After that you will be able to read and fully understand more advanced LabVIEW books (at amazon.com you will find a lot of them).
LabVIEW for everyone give you those basic concepts. It has 981 pages divided into 17 chapters, 6 appendixes and 1 glossary. The fundamentals of LabVIEW are shown in the first 10 chapters. Advanced topics can be found in the last 7 chapters. There are plenty of illustrations (almost every page has at least one).
In this book authors explain, step-by-step, every pop-up menu, every pull-down menu, every functional block and its applications, etc. To follow those explanations, you just need to have the basic knowledge of your PC's operating system. There is an accompanying CD-ROM that includes a 30-day evaluation version of LabVIEW 8.0 for Windows, which allows you to practice all activities (exercises) found inside the book.
Well organized, best choice I know of.......2007-04-02
Labview is a problematic language. At first it seems so easy, and then something comes up and you can spend a lot of time tracking it down.
This book is well organized and has a lot of good content. Other books I've bought were terrible by comparison. This is written by those who know what they are doing.
However, you still have to get under the hood and practice and learn how to work with the program. The book will help.
Product Description
This book was specifically written for the author's 85-year-old mother who is now a master, but it was also "field-tested" by adults of all ages. Within one moth everyone was an "expert" - sending and receiving e-mail, using the Internet, writing and correspondence, and playing music and games. You'll "be connected" without the fuss and frustration - just simple step-by-step instructions, no jargon, no complications.

First Week with my new PC.......2007-03-12
My mom said this book helped dispell some of the fear about getting started with her computer. She says it answered a lot of her questions in a format that was easy to understand. She would recommend this book to other seniors getting started with a computer.
First Week With My new PC.......2005-09-05
The book is well written. The author writes to those who are not computer literate. Examples are helpful as well as the step by step instructions.
It's the best!.......2005-06-21
I bought this as a Father's Day gift for my 89 year old father. He got a new computer and was completely overwhelmed. After attempting to read several other computer books he was about to give up. He is thrilled with this one and is very excited about using the computer again. He said "Finally, a book written in clear, easy-to-understand language that I can follow. This is the best!"
Better than the Dummies series for the Complete New User.......2004-03-05
I bought this book and a dummies book for my 73 year old father who had never used a computer in his life before. He read both and learned more, and faster from this book - First Week with My New PC. His comment was that this book was the one geared to the complete newbie. He felt that the dummies book required a knowledge base that he, as a brand new user, did not yet have! Definitely highly recommended!
Can be enjoyed by any.......2001-02-13
While The First Week With My New PC was written for the author's 85-year-old mother who is now a PC master, it can be enjoyed by any - including business managers who have resisted the lure of the computer screen. From how to watch the stock market and produce a document to emailing and formatting work, this is packed with fine basics in simple language any can readily understand.

Readers interested in achieving mastery of the Internet Protocol (IP) addressing system and its related protocols should consult the superior information provided in IP Fundamentals.
Author Thomas A. Maufer begins with a discussion of the IP numbering system, including excellent coverage of subnetting, supernetting, and the differences between IPv4 and IPv6. The author reveals the intricacies of variable-length subnet masking (VLSM) and classless inter-domain routing (CIDR) before addressing how IP operates in various infrastructures, including Ethernet, Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP), Token Ring, and Frame Relay. In his discussion of IP routing, the author shows how the two versions of Routing Information Protocol (RIPv1 and RIPv2) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) work, both independently and in heterogeneous routing environments.
Maufer strikes a commendable balance between thoroughness and practicality. He makes sure--through liberal use of examples--that you understand everything necessary to complete your job. But he also goes to extraordinary lengths to bolster your grasp of the IP suite; his chapters conclude with fact-rich endnotes, plus references to journal articles and standards documents. In this way, IP Fundamentals helps you surpass mere technical competence to become an IP addressing and routing expert. --David Wall
Customer Reviews:
This will make it easier to understand the IP World........2001-06-10
I have passed several exam involving IP, Routing and Switching. I though I had a very good understanding of the concepts. After reading this book I found that what I knew only scratched the surface.
From the beginning of the book you get topics like IP and IP routing foundations, addressing, subnetting, VLSM, detailed breakdown of the first three layers of the OSI model, Ethernet technologies, token ring and FDDI, PPP and Frame Relay.
The author breaks down routing with RIP and OSPF very well and makes the concepts comprehensible for even the beginner level technician. Also he handles ICMP, 802.1q & p as well as first-rate coverage of DHCP.
The book seems very complete and the author makes sure to include the RFCs that correspond to the different section for the reference purposes. Overall this is one of the best books for IP subject matter.
Very good explanation of concepts. however poor editing.......2001-03-20
This otherwise excellent book is marred and riddled by moderate to serious typos. At times the typos almost makes the text incomprehensible.
If the reader is ready to put in the extra effort and patience to understand these troubled portions of the book, then what he gets is surely worth all the trouble.
The book is one of the best book on IP that I have ever read. It explains in very great details and with amazing simplicity the most cryptic details about CIDR, VLSM and other highly complex topics.
The Chapters are arranged very logically and it almost feels like a continous text. I have decided to give the book 4 stars although it deserves more than 5 stars. I would really advise the publishers to spend some more time on a book to ensure its correctness, before the send the book out to the press.
One last think which I feel is that this book does assumes certain previous knowledge of concepts like ARP and other basic concepts of IP, hence this book should be much more fun and usefull after a reading a primary book on TCP/IP like Douglas Comer or W.R. Stevens.
Ultimate Subnetting.......2001-02-01
This book is amazing. I purchased it to get a firm grasp on subnetting, and it did for me what no other resource was able to do. The informative chapters followed by real world exercises really made me understand the underlying reasons as to why sunbetting was necessary and how it could be applied in real world scenerios. I only gave this book a 4 because at some points the writing does get a bit wordy, reading more like a technical manual. But other than that, this book is a keeper!
Just what the title says..........2000-11-15
This book will definately show you everything you need to know about IP. It has been a truly valuable resource. If you are new to IP and Routing, however, you may want to read something a little more basic first. Without a basic understanding of IP concepts, this book may seem a little too complex. Excellent book to keep on the shelf though...you'll go back to it again and again.
What every Administrator Should know about IP.......2000-11-11
This book is what is says Fundamental. IF you work with IP or want to work with IP you should know what is in this book. I found the chapter on subnetting wonderfully enlightening. This book answered many of my questions I had about IP. I highly recommend this book.

The best book around on accessibility.......2003-11-26
This book beats the others I've seen hands down. Not only does it explain exactly what the problems are; it also tells you how to go about fixing them, in detail, including code solutions in some places. Where there aren't solutions it presents very useful workarounds.
The W3C guidelines only take you so far. This book gets you to the next level, and helps you start thinking the right way so you can solve new problems that come up in a similar fashion.
Now, if someone would only write a book on making web sites *usable* for people with disabilities (not just accessible), we'd be laughing.

Customer Reviews:
Great intro to infosec.......2007-09-30
Driving on the information highway, users face threats ranging from worms to scams. The Essential Computer Security: Everyone's Guide to Email, Internet, and Wireless Security can serve as the owner's manual for anyone serious about ensuring the security of their computer and the data contained therein. Many victims of identity theft could undoubtedly have protected themselves had they followed the basic rules outlined in the book.
Essential Computer Security does not attempt to be an encyclopedic work covering the esoteric realms of computer security. Rather, author Tony Bradley takes a "just the facts" approach and covers the essentials, focusing on the two applications average consumers use most: e-mail and the Internet.
In 12 lucid, easy-to-read chapters, Bradley covers all of the necessary topics end-users need to understand, from the basics of Microsoft Windows security to passwords, patching, malware, wireless, e-mail security, and more.
The text does have a technical angle for readers who want that level of detail.
Too few IT security books are written for the typical user. This work lives up to its title and fills an important need.
A Useful Book on Computer Security.......2007-01-15
I found this book easy to read and have useful information about setting up Windows XP security.
Working together we can all make the Internet a safer place !.......2006-12-15
When Tony asked me to write the foreword for this book, I considered it an great honor. We both share the strong belief that knowledge is a more powerful tool than any firewall, antivirus program or intrusion detection system could ever hope to be. That said, not all of us have the luxury of security guru at our fingertips to show us the ropes. This means that you sometimes need to take it upon yourself to understand and learn what needs to be done to keep your computer and network safe and secure. That is what this book was engineered to do, without any confusing jargon or talking down to the reader. Get it and read it and help make the Internet a more secure and safer place for all of us to enjoy.
Douglas Schweitzer, Sc.D.
Computer Security for Everyone.......2006-11-20
One of the first things to know about this book is that it doesn't try to be a complete reference for computer security, and it keeps it focus very well. It doesn't try to be a computer security book for the top 5% of the technically inclined, either. Instead, it tries to be a computer security book for the masses and covers topics that they'll need to know to keep their computer safe. The book outline why this is important to the average user: your own data will be kept safe and your computer will be kept problem free, and your computer wont be a problem source for everyone else.
The book does a decent job of laying out what it will cover and mostly picks topics that matter most, require the least amount of extra effort to make it happen. The book isn't just for one situation, either, and it covers some home network setups which include wireless routers and such. Overall, it seems to have picked its territory well.
It covers this territory in an OK fashion, which is to say that it gives an adequate treatment to the important topics but leaves a few spots uncovered. I'm pleased that it covers some basic WinXP stuff, like how to secure your accounts and such.
The chapter on passwords was OK, and about what I expected. Obviously these are important, as bots that perform brute force attacks to get in are as popular as ever. The chapter on patching is OK, but seems incomplete. It should have done a better job of covering Windows Update a little more thoroughly (it felt like it stopped short of this important feature) and a bit more on how to use built-in vendor supplied "I have an update available" stuff that is increasingly popular.
Part II is what's probably unique about this book, and gives some of the best meat around for this level of a book. It covers home networking safety (ie keeping the neighbor kid from using your WIFI and keeping your computers safe and usable behind a DSL firewall), email security (both your account credentials and attachment security), and spyware, adware, and general web-browser security. I would have liked to have seen the book advocate (with great reasons) Firefox over IE and Windows Defender in addition to AdAware and Hijack This.
Part 3 is about maintenance and backups, and it's decent. It slips into Linux advocacy in Chapter 12, which we could have done without.
The appendices are good, well reasoned and well executed. The case study and the basics covered complement the book well.
Overall the book does a decent job, and targets the kind of person who would like to know enough to participate in some popular forums and contribute, so they have some technical skills that they're growing. It wont do so well with people who are not very technically inclined, and that's not unsurprising.
Wonderful Book for Home and Small Business Users.......2006-11-20
This book is a really compact overview of computer security for non-technical users. But, at the same time, it's technical. Not too technical, but technical enough to walk the reader through setting up a home firewall, a secure network (wired or wireless), and anti-spyware to name just a few.
There's a lot of goodies in only 278 pages.
A lot of books that have come out lately on home computer security are either too light to be of value, or focus more on identity theft and fraud prevention. These are important topics, but Tony sticks to bread-and-butter technical measures home users need to understand.
There's real meat in here that goes into surprising detail that's easy to follow that I've haven't seen in other recent books. Tony does a good job of covering setting up Local Security policies on Windows machines, for example. This is something I've only seen in hardcore techie manuals that probably wouldn't normally be seen by most home users.
There's a great chapter on disaster recovery, how to follow security bulletins from Microsoft and apply patches regularly. And, for the daring home use, even a chapter on setting up Linux.
The case study for a small business is also well done and can provide valuable insight for a home user setting up their own network.
Essential Computer Security is complete yet simple and achieves the goal of its title.

A Marvelous Collection of Internet Knee Slappers and LOLs........2003-02-26
While I'm not one who really enjoys jokes, I know that most people do. At least from time to time. This is not only a nice collection of jokes and knee slappers that have made the rounds on the net, but it is also a history of humor on the net.
I think this book would be good to keep handy if you give speeches or if you use humor in your work or in your writing as I attempt on occasion. This book will help me to come up with some cute stories very quickly.
And it would be nice to keep and give to your children and grandchildren as a memorial to the humor of the net from it's inception.
I would like to add that, while I'm not one who really enjoys jokes, I found some of these just incredibly funny. That's about as high a compliment as I can pay a book of humor.
Tammy has done a great job putting together a really great little book. The jokes and humorous stories are neatly organized so it's easy to find what you want. Highly recommended.

Entertaining and uplifting collection.......2003-02-02
"Off the Internet" is a compilation of various jokes, inspirational stories, and other miscellaneous writing collected off the Internet. Think you've heard all the "blonde" jokes? I did too, but there were several new ones in here. Think you receive so many e-mails that there is not an inspirational story out there that you haven't heard? I'll bet you are wrong and there are new ones in here. Tammy Wright has done a good job of filtering through the off-color and often less than humorous jokes to compile only the best. If you are looking for the occasional inspirational story she has likewise filtered through the many thousands on the Internet to provide a collection of some of the best. Just about everyone is sure to find something enjoyable in "Off the Internet".
Lots of Fun for kids too.......2002-10-08
I keept this book in my backpack and read it with my friends every chance I got. I do not get to read all the stuff that comes across the internet so this was great. My friends loved it so much that one of them decided to steal it. It was very funny and it had some serious stuff in it too and stories about families and kids, some were very sad. I have been telling my parents to buy me another one.
You must be kidding.......2002-09-17
This book makes no sense. Great example of an opportunistic "compiler" marketing a bad idea to people who may not have access to the internet and certainly don't need access to this.
A book to inspire you and keep you laughing!.......2002-07-26
Not everyone has the pleasure of having a computer with email. This book gives everyone the chance to read the funniest things off of the net. For many people who have computers, don't always have it in front of them. So take it with you and no matter where you are,you can read the inspiring stories and jokes that will keep you laughing. It keeps you entertained for hours. My son (11) could not put the book down. I now hear him going around telling his friends jokes from the book. It's summer time and I am so happy to see that my son has a hard time putting this book down.

Everyone Should Read "Everyone Should Draw".......2006-11-14
This is a fun book. Whether you like to draw and do a lot of it, or whether you are afraid to pick up a pencil you will learn something from this book. It has some good technical information, and will encourage you along the artistic path no matter where you are. This book is so much more though. It will change the way you view the world around you. It will open up your eyes to light, color and detail you have never noticed before. It will get you excited to draw, and to capture the fascinating world we live in.
You Are Right, Everyone Really Should Draw.......2006-10-16
Coming from a very artistic family it can intimidating to draw only primitive stick figures. I had assumed the gene had skipped me though clearly evident in my mother and children. This volume offers hope even for me. This well designed book takes one on a journey of development in eight chapters beginning with Vision and ending with Freeing the Spirit. Appropriately titled these two chapters share the vision of the author that everyone really should draw, should enjoy that experience, and gain greater understanding and enjoyment of the world around them by doing so. Within the pages are exercises which develop the reader's ability to see the world around him and then share it by putting it on paper. The way the teaching takes place makes sense and progresses logically from simple to more complex. Along the journey the author shares his philosophy of living which only enhances the reader's experience. If you read this book and want to draw you will be very pleased. If you read this book and want to gain greater appreciation of the world you will be delighted.

Book Description
In this extraordinary book, a series of 'letters written at the beginning of an era in which the book has lost the significance it had and in which electronic correspondence, in which anyone may join, becomes the medium of the moment', John Chris Jones explores the potential of the internet as the instigator of a new kind of life. The book is in fact a record of an electronic text, an attempt to find a new form of writing which acknowledges the significance of the connectedness and immediacy of computer networks. In the author's words, it is 'a record of trying to think some of the unthinkables that our technologies have brought before us in this pause before the post-industrial breakfast...'. Based on an analysis of automation (the replacement of human skills by machines, as industrialization was the replacement of human effort), the possibilities opened up by the transmission of information by electricity, and a refusal to accept that the 'virtual' world is in any sense less real than the world excluding computers, Jones sees the internet as making possible an awakening from the 'frozen dreaming' of industrial life.

Making sense of digital culture.......2000-05-08
John Chris Jones' "the internet and everyone" is a remarkable new book which gives some much needed perspective to the transformation that has taken place in our culture due to electronic media. Beyond this, it addresses the implications of these changes for society as a whole, suggesting ways through which we might not just be blown by the winds of change, but instead begin to make the weather ourselves. As such Jones' book should become required reading for all those with an interest in taking advantage of all that digitization has to offer, while avoiding the dehumanizing effect that these technologies can sometimes have.
Like the culture it describes, this beautifully designed book is occasionally chaotic and confusing, but Jones provides "reading paths" so that people of different interests can "hop" through the book, finding those aspects that are most relevant to them. In this way Jones mirrors the structure of the internet, presenting multiple narratives to be stitched together by different readers.
In terms of content, Jones has been exploring the social implications of technological development for almost half a century. "the internet and everyone" presents these findings and shows very clearly how, though radically new in many ways, digital technology is in fact an extension of innovations that preceded it. Jones provides what is so rarely found: a presentation of the social implications of technology and, most importantly, specific suggestions for how to adapt these technologies more fully to suit people (rather than our adapting to them). By taking this broader view of technological development, presented from the point of view of one who has very much been part of its development, Jones gives an unparalleled insight into not just the future course of technology but also of our interaction with it .
"the internet and everyone" presents essays, notes, plays, correspondence -- seemingly a hodgepodge. This idiosyncratic presentation, however, is most suitable for the central message that Jones is presenting -- that for technology to be humane it must be decentral, partial, fragmentary. Anything else risks a tyranny, one which begins in the way we shape our technology and which will eventually take root in society, often limiting our options without our even clearly knowing. We can take from Jones' book to begin with what is most of interest to us. With patience and curiosity we can dip back into it from time to time until even the most odd seeming parts make sense.
Jones' book provides what the internet does not -- perspective. Though seemingly weekly the "next big trend" in the internet is reported, the real implications of this development of a "digital nervous system" for society are much broader. For those who would like to get a sense of what is possible, and of how it might be used to fashion a more humane society, Jones' "the internet and everyone" is a seminal work.
