Excellent Introduction to Color Management and Beyond.......2007-08-09
This book is an excellent introduction to color management. It is practical, but does not shy away from presenting the science behind the important concepts. Even better, the book is able to this in a way which motivates the key ideas by not drifting too deeply into the mathematics behind that science.
The organization of the book was perfect -- the authors do an excellent job of presenting the material and making it very interesting. I read the book cover to cover for the first two parts (the last section applies the newly learned material to particular color-managed applications like Photoshop, Quark, etc.).
I highly recommend this title to photographers and artists who are trying to understand more about what colors in your files, from your monitor, and on your prints really mean and how to take advantage of that understanding by producing outputs which are more faithful to what you intend.
Real World Colour Management.......2007-07-17
If you are relatively new to the world of colour and want to obtain a better understanding of the topic then this is the book for you. I found this book to be well structured and extremely useful in understanding all the jargon and also clearing up some myths about different colour work flows. EXCELLENT!!
Excellent source book.......2007-05-13
When I needed to better understand color management, Fraser's book was a perfect find. It doesn't pretend to be simple, but it is very well written with a sense of humor. I find myself revisiting chapters for re-reads when my needs demand. It is a complete course in color management for the first time student, and it has become a oft used reference. It makes so many other books "too simple..." Because it covers the history of color management as well the concepts and tools, the book is also one of those excellent references needed for all serious photographers.
Invaluable Guide.......2007-03-29
My purpose in buying this book was to help me print photos that looked like the image on my PC monitor. The phrase "color management" can probably mean many things to different people but this is really what matters to me. It can be difficult enough to edit photos so that you are satisfied with how it looks on your screen. If you print it out and the photo looks more red than the screen, or darker, or any number of other possible differences than you will know only frustration and heartache when trying to print photos.
While simple in concept, successfully getting a printed image to mirror that on your screen is a complex task and this book will greatly aid you in the process. It methodically covers all aspects of color management both from a theoretical perspective and a practical series of concrete specifics to manage color successfully on your system.
Depending on your needs, it is almost certainly not necessary to read every page of this guide. For my purposes a lot of the theoretical discussion was not relevant and a lot of space is devoted to CMYK printing in a professional environment while I print exclusively at home. There are undoubtedly people with different interests, however, who will find such information invaluable while they may gloss over some of the sections that were most useful to me. In the end, that is why I give this book 5 stars and my highest recommendation. It provides great information no matter what your needs are and you are free to consume as much or little as suits you. If you are a photographer and haven't gotten into color management at all, then quit sitting on the fence. Buy this book and start the process and your photos will benefit tremendously.
Read it if you need it........2007-01-22
Of all Bruce Fraser's wonderful books, this has to be the best. I grew up in the analog imaging world. In those days, long ago, you could get by with training your eye and if necessary, working by trial and error. You could concentrate on the image and let Kodak do the math.
With the miracle of computers we have far greater precision and--let's be honest--far greater complexity (which is a nice way of saying, difficulty). What RWCM does is take something that isn't easy and isn't simple and, by brilliantly explaining it, makes it a little easier to grasp. Of course, you can't sell books by saying "Turns astounding difficulty into mere complexity!" but if you're going to put human color perception on paper or the web, that's what you're dealing with.
That said, I think the vast majority of digital imaging users would gladly settle for pleasing color as opposed to accurate color if they knew what was involved. For these folks there are the Scott Kelby-type books and gizmos that calibrate your monitor while leaving the rest of your workflow untouched.

"Color Confidence is one book that no photographer, especially me, can afford to be without!"
Art Morris, Photographer (www.birdsasart.com)
Establishing a successful color management workflow that produces predictable results is an important -- yet tricky -- undertaking. Most photographers are all too familiar with the frustration of a print not matching the image on the monitor. In
Color Confidence, digital imaging expert Tim Grey provides the crucial information you need to get the color you want, every time.
His results-oriented guide shows you how to manage color effectively across all devices. He demystifies complicated topics and takes you through each component of a color-managed workflow step-by-step.
Designed for busy photographers, this full-color guide cuts through the theory, focusing on the practical information you need to make the best color decisions from capture to output.

Excellent book.......2007-08-08
This is the best book that I have used on this subject. Clear explanations, illustrations, etc.
Excellent.......2007-06-16
A really very useful book that explains a complex subject about as clearly as you could hope for. Covers a great range of topics beyond color management. I highly recommend this book.
Good book if you are searching for a step by step guide........2007-01-25
I was really disapointed by the book. I wanted something that would have been closer to the theories and technicals aspects of color profiles. This is mainly a step by step book to follow with specific software (or even hardware) to reach some goal. It is very software and hardware specific - not generic. I learned more about "how color profiles works together" on websites than in the book.
Much Needed Book.......2006-06-19
Digital photographers don't pay enough attention to color management. This book is exactly what is needed to remedy that lack. You'll find all the basics here, and enough in-depth information to start you on the road to calibrating and fine-tuning your digital equipment to accurately reproduce the colors you see.
Just What You need.......2006-01-06
This is exactly what I was looking for; it gives a quick in-and-out overview of colour management, with detailed information about calibration and profiles. Other books on this topic are twice the size, which I don't think is necessary for most people.
It goes into very good detail, with task-by-task instructions, and is well-organised and clear (One reviewer claims that it was "poorly edited and conceived"; I didn't have any of the problems they did).

A "How to" book that doesn't explain anything.......2007-10-09
This was one of the most aggravating books I've ever read. The book purports to explain color correction but does not guide you through the process. Instead it gives you directions like "first adjust the black levels, then move on to fine tune the colors..."
Without actually telling you how to perform any of the adjustments the book is describing it's almost worthless. The reader is left with the same questions they had before they read it.
Written for the editor who needs to color correct.......2007-02-23
Great book that I have been looking for. This book was written in a style that I, an offline editor trying to move up to online work, could understand. It deals with how to color correct - not just how to use a specific tool (though it does that also). Well worth the money!
color demystified in an agnostic way.......2007-01-10
This is a fantastic book - required reading for anyone producing video.
Everyone will have tried basic color correction and been confounded by the number of parameters that all seem to do the same thing, yet interact to produce worse results than you started with. This book goes into great detail about how luminance and color influence your image and leads you through excercises to try on your own material, and images provided on the enclosed CD.
Although it is a technical subject, it is written in a very readable way.
It is amazing the changes that happen with quite subtle adjustments. That is the key to everything. Subtlety that creates great results.
The book covers color correction to match other footage, but also correction to create special effects and drama. There are even examples of how to highlight the subject from a confused background.
A, MUST READ book that should be on everyone's shelf.
Color Correction for DV.......2006-08-23
I never get desappointed when I get a new book from DV collection.
This book was an excellent acquisition, it goes into details and shares the experience of the author. It is not only for the video enthusiast but for professionals who work on video as a reference book.
It shows a broad collection of tools that will help us make a better video and also correcting those shots made by consumer DV cameras.
A good overview, but not superb.......2005-03-02
The book does a good job of being an overview for color correcting video - but unfortunately because it avoids anything application specific it fails to show you how to do stuff in your specific NLE. Training dedicated to a specific application & color correction- like my FCP training DVD by Digital Film Tree is much better because it teaches the theory AND the tool - so you cover both angles while this was just the theory. But that may be what you want - or your NLE may not have a book about color correction dedicated to it. If you're a FCP user, there's a book called 'Advanced Finishing Techniques' in the Apple Training Series that I would recommend over this one.

The Non-Designer's Scan and Print Book (Non-Designer's Series) is an excellent guide for beginners who want to learn the essentials of scanning images and printing professional-looking publications. Authors Robin Williams and Sandee Cohen are two well-known desktop publishing (DTP) experts who have written a number of acclaimed computer-graphics books, and here they do an outstanding job of distilling the core elements of scanning, manipulating, and outputting images from high-tech, esoteric details.
Williams and Cohen commence their tour of scanning and printing by explaining how to plan your project. They begin by encouraging you to choose your paper, colors, graphics, binding, number of folds and copies, and printing methods. Then they introduce you to basic DTP and business issues like resolution, paper size, print area, cost of goods, fonts, and PostScript. Their highly rudimentary approach even includes a discussion of the type of printing device necessary to complete your project and whether you will need to use an inkjet, laser, dye-sublimation, or thermal wax printer. From there, they look to the essentials of commercial printing, finding a print shop, working within a budget, and using processes such as letterpress, flexography, and gravure.
Subsequent chapters delve into computer issues like software applications commonly used for DTP projects and how they handle color modes, raster images, resolution, vector images, and file formats. You also tackle color issues such as process color printing, using spot colors and duotones, and specifying the number of colors in a publication.
Image acquisition plays a big role in completing any project, and the authors provide helpful tips for using scanners, digital cameras, Kodak Photo CD-ROMs, stock photography, and clip art. Finally, you study printer topics such as using high-res output, working with service bureaus, determining output specs such as client and delivery information, writing film specs, using printer's marks, understanding resolution and linescreen issues, trapping, and proofing your job. There's also a preflight checklist to help you determine whether you've thought everything through. At the end of the book, you get quizzes or projects for most of the chapters as well as a list of resources for more information. --David Wall

Non-Designer's Scan & Print Book.......2005-09-04
This is a great book for anyone interested in Graphic Design. I purchsed this book for a Graphic Design class and read almost the entire book before the class started. It has very helpful information for dealing with print shops. It is easy to read and understand.
should be updated.......2005-05-13
It`s good to have around but this book made on a Powermac 8500 (using Pagemaker!) does feel dated in every sense of the word..PDF - the professional print standard nowadays - is poorly covered. Just one page with useless basic information. The writers do not mention anything about Open Type fonts or Indesign. There's not much about dia scanners, sizes and resolutions either.
All in all there's a lot to learn here but the information given often stays a bit on the surface or is simply not up to date. Especially for people who have some experience in the field and are not living in the past..
Not Just For Non-Designers.......2004-09-21
The non-designer title is actually a bit of a misnomer. Don't let this title dissuade you even if you have spent years in the industry (like myself). Unless you are very very knowledgable of the print-production process, this book will have a lot to teach you.
Don't let the hokey design of this book make you believe that it does not contain a wealth of knowledge...it does.
Great book!!.......2003-10-22
I was a technical trainer for four years and was in charge of teaching classes such as color theory, digital printing, scanning etc. I really loved this book because it put everything together for me after about 10 months of scraping information from a lot of different sources. You can't go wrong with this book.
Pithy.......2002-12-11
These ladies have put together a very clear, concise, comprehensive handbook for the non-pro publisher. They walk you through all the essentials of desktop publishing, and all your choices, pointing out the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Its great!!.......2005-09-30
I love this book. It has taught me how to do websites. I feel more confident designing websites using dreamweaver and flash thanks to these books. I also have the flash book from this series and they are a blessing. It is so easy to understand and to follow. It makes it fun!
Too many errors in the book to follow.......2005-02-21
I am taking a class in Dreamweaver and Flash. One of my teachers has required that we purchase this book and the other teacher in my flash class has us purchasing a book by lynda.com.
I hate this book because if you don't know what you are doing, don't buy this book. They leave out a lot of important information. I got so frustrated in trying to finish the exercises that I just would eventually stop. Further in the book they might tell you what you needed to know back a few chapters ago. Poorly written. Not for beginners. The other book was great. Lynda.com books are more in detail and they are written correctly.
Attractive but flawed.......2004-12-19
This book is attractive(all glossy pictures) and is able to just show just the basics. The problem is that the CD in the book doesn't boot and it is impossible to do the lessons without it. In addition, there are problems in the lessons and they skip steps, or show the wrong picture for a step. The email for support is also missing, you may be able to use it if you know Korean. Good luck with this pick you will need it, I would look for a better alternative. I have read a lot tech books and work in MIS, this book would not help me complete my job.
Dreamweaver MX 2004 Accelerated.......2004-09-20
I like the examples in this book very much, they are professional in nature and gradually increase in complexity. However, this book has some basic procedural errors in almost every chapter. These are not substantial errors but they make for a bit of a challenge in a classroom when your students get confused. Sometimes the wrong supporting image will be displayed and referred to by an unrelated step. Other errors include an incorrect procedure, or a missing but important procedure. Also, be aware, some copies out there are missing pages. By now this problem has probably been corrected and I hope that a new edition comes forward soon with the errors fixed. Otherwise, I agree with the other comments, this is a fantastic resource with top notch examples. When new concepts are introduced by example, a thorough and detailed description of what is being introduced preceeds the example. I still recommend this book for my classes.

Some of the exercises involve you downloading extensions from the Macromedia site. The book does give you the extension file name, BUT two came up with no results found, which are creating a floating menu (chapter 6) and inserting a real video file (chapter 9). So you may have trouble doing these.
It would have been much better if the extensions where on the CD.
Conclusion: Source files on the CD along with the easy to follow exercises allows you to LEARN DREAMWEAVER the easier way. A must book for the beginner as well as the intermediate to advanced. Layout graphics and printing are exceptionally presented. The book content along with CD full of source files are remarkable. Learning by reading is very important but equally important is learning by doing, which this book demonstrates.
The book sells for $29.99 in the US.

That's What Computer Books Should Look Like.......2006-03-11
This book is simply amazing. What will get your attention first is the lovely colour pages from start to finish. The author simply takes you straight into business and shows you how to do things. If you believe you are an expert, then you can jump straight into the exercises. I was so thrilled with the series that I decided to order the books about Illustrator CS and Dreamweaver MX.
This book should be strongly recommended to the novice user, the teacher who likes to organize his lessons and the intermediate. As I am not an expert in Photoshop, I do not know to what extent would a Photoshop expert benefit from it.
One of the best written books on PS.......2004-09-13
The very first thing I noticed in the book was instructions on how to install PhotoShop. WOW! I mean if you can't get the software installed, it doesn't matter how well written the book is! GREAT way to start out! The next pages gave an overview of the tools and menus and palettes available once you get PS loaded on your computer. I have been using PS for several years now and this is the first time I have seen any author (or team of authors) bother to cover the basics. PHOTOSHOP CS ACCELERATED has my vote for the best book around already and this is only after I read the first chapter.
First thing I tried hard to remember was the short cut, Ctl D. This takes the marquee lines away when you have been using the lasso or marquee tools. It was a handy short cut for me as I was learning PhotoShop. Ever crop a picture only to have a faint border of another color around the picture? Try Defringe! Never heard of it? Look in the Layer menu under Matting. Or have you ever wished to slim down a feature in a photo? Try using the Move tool while holding the Alt Key. The press the left arrow a few times - automatic diet!
Another handy trick that was taught in the early chapters was "Contiguous". When using the Magic Wand to select an entire background, this box should be unchecked if there is any background inside the image you want. For example, a person has their hand on their hip, creating an area that is cut off from the rest of the background. By having Contiguous unchecked, this are will also be selected when you use the Magic Wand. VERY handy.
Chapter Four teaches the Patch, Clone, Pattern and both History Brushes. Again, these are tools I was aware of but didn't know how to use. The chapter walks you through them in a clear and concise manner except for the Art History tool. Those instructions confused me. Be sure to take the time to go through the preset brushes, there are so many options.
Do you love those old black and white photos that have just a hint of color? Chapter 5 explains how you can create your own tinted photos. Also in this chapter, you will learn how to put a photo into a frame that is set on an angle. Keep reading to learn how to create Neon Lights and fireworks.
Color correction and things like sharpening a photo, making chocolate candy look like chocolate instead of some rose color, brightening a dark photo, correcting over exposure, replacing color and several more tidbits are found in Chapter 7. If you have trouble with the concept of layers or channels, the next two chapters are a must read. And continuing on in the book is the chapter on Filters. What fun these can be. Don't forget about masks also found in Chapter 10.
By this time, you have covered 350 pages of material on PhotoShop CS and the exercises that go with each chapter. The CD contains the files needed to perform the exercises, along with a finished version of what each is trying to accomplish as well as a copy of PS CS and ImageReady CS. If you have ever been frustrated with learning just what PS will do, this is the book to show you all the wonderful elements in this very extensive program. I have been using PS for a few years and this book showed me things I never knew the program would do. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to use PS but has never found the right book to help them learn it.
Photoshop CS Accelerated.......2004-07-13
An excellent book for a beginner. Great explanation on tools and palettes functions. I think no other book on Photoshop has greater details about the tools and palettes functions.
HOWEVER, the excercises after each lesson contains many errors that will frustrate the beginner.

As a serious filmmaker, you need to ensure that the color and lighting in each frame of your movie looks consistent and achieves the mood you want to convey. If you're using Avid Xpress DV 3.5 to edit your footage, but you've yet to master the software's color correction features, you need
Color Correction for Avid Xpress DV 3.5.
Based on the one-day course taught by Avid's own Authorized Education Centers, this official step-by-step guide shows you how to color correct video frames in Avid Xpress DV 3.5 by taking you through the three stages of color correction: restoring the original look of each shot, achieving shot-to-shot consistency, and creating a final look. In the process, you'll learn how to use video scopes—which graphically display color information about individual frames in a sequence—to achieve brightness and color levels that are within safe limits for broadcast, attain a good level of contrast, correct color casts, and match brightness and color in consecutive shots in a program. By the end of this short course, you'll be able to analyze an image for color correction problems using scopes, color correct segments in a program, adjust color for an entire program, and check that levels are within broadcast limits. A companion CD-ROM (Windows XP and Mac OS X compatible) includes the project and media files used in the book so you can get started using your new skills immediately.

Basic information only.......2005-08-23
Extremely basic and rudimentary information on color correction.
It only covers the basics, such as setting white and black levels and white balance.
If you're interested in this book just go to the bookstore and skim through it. There is not that much information in this book; it'll take you around 30 minutes to skim through it.

This highly useful, detailed guide helps desktop-publishing and other design professionals produce the best possible scans and halftones from their images. The first section focuses on scanning, first featuring explanations of such terms as spi (samples per inch), bit depth, optical and interpolated resolution, and dynamic range. The authors even advise you on buying and cleaning scanners. Next they detail the elements of good scans and how to fix less-than-perfect ones, helping you figure out what sort of file formats and resolutions to use in your work, how to do tonal and color corrections, and how to sharpen and compress images. Finally, the discussion turns to Web and printer output and to OCR technology and PhotoCD images.
The section on halftones teaches you how to produce decent halftone images, first by explaining how halftones work and then by explaining such issues as frequency, gray levels, spot variation, spot gain, spot shapes, and the role of printers and software in creating halftones. There's also a discussion of stochastic screening and how to create blends and reduce moiré and other patterns. The last chapters here help you fine-tune your halftone settings and learn a bit about PostScript operators for halftones and scanning.
The third and last section focuses on using image applications to work with scans, tonal and color corrections, and halftones. This discussion includes Adobe Photoshop, Micrografx Picture Publisher, Corel Photo-Paint, Ulead PhotoImpact, Equilibrium's DeBabelizer, Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia FreeHand, CorelDRAW, Adobe PageMaker, and QuarkXPress. The authors also look at a few scanning applications and offer tips on using them.
Throughout the book the authors provide plenty of images and screen shots to illustrate their points, and a full-color section helps bring some of these examples to life. There's lots of technical discussion, but since each chapter builds on the previous ones and the basic terminology is put forth clearly, you can leave off wherever you wish and still have a lot of new knowledge to apply to your scans and halftones. --Kathleen Caster
Book Description
With the advent of desktop publishing came the democratization of graphic design. Which means that these days, with the right equipment, just about anyone can produce graphically sophisticated documents--or clumsy ill-conceived messes. To make sure you end up with the former, you need this comprehensive guide! Realizing that many of today's desktop publishers come to the task with no formal design or graphics training, authors
David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman, Steve Roth, and Conrad Chavez, detail both the theory and practice of producing top-notch scans and halftones. Through tips, techniques, step-by-step instructions, and real-world examples, you'll learn how to scan, sharpen, and output your images as well as how to correct color and tone. Throughout, the emphasis is on not just how to perform a given task but why it makes sense to do so in a certain way. Filled with sure-fire techniques and practical discussions of today's software and hardware, when it comes to halftones and scans, this guide covers it all!

Very Useful for Beginner.......2007-03-15
For someone like me, a novice in using the scanner, this was just right. I purchased a very high end scanner, and wanted to do more than just scan pictures, documents, etc. The hardware came with decent color management software, which was upgradable at no cost. I've used it more often and more efficiently for more projects as a result of this book. The areas that I din't like, didn't need, or didn't understand were just left for later investigation. It has, though, spurred me on to do a little research beyond what's in the book and in this way has assisted me in acquiring a bit more scanner skill.
Author notes: 3rd Edition Entirely Revised.......2004-06-07
As one of the authors of the third edition of the book (2004), let me tell you that the third edition (2004) has been entirely revised, redesigned, and overhauled. Keep that in mind as you read reviews below of the 2nd (1998) and 1st editions (1993).
In the latest edition, we've restructured the book around the scanning and digitzing workflow: starting with scanners and digital cameras; moving through correction; then into output onto ink jet, film, screen, and (extensively) offset press as halftones.

I'd call this a "Try it.".......2002-12-03
Frequently, I find that I have to buy books that are overly technical for my purposes in order to get all the info I want. This book suits me, (though it may not suit the needs of a graphics profession). There are no buyer's guides to specific models of scanners here. However, there is a lot of detail about how scanners, scanning software and graphics programs work. The authors provide such arcana as the formula for determining what size a scanned image will be (depending on the options you pick) and goodies like this. There is info on file formats, compression, how to choose resolution and what influences the outcome of scans and how to correct the result. There is also a lot of information most applicable to professional print work, for which I have no particular use, except that info of this type helps to fill out my picture of how digital imaging works. If you want suggestions for scanning projects to do with your kids, look elsewhere, but if you're interested in the theory of scanners I would recommend this book. I'll also mention that, in my view, the writing is clear and well-organized and if I occasionally must pause to consider it's only because the material requires a little thought. This is not rocket science, but neither is it Sponge Bob and the authors treat it accordingly.
Great title..........2001-02-05
I've learned some thngs from this book, however like one other reviewer stated, just when you thought it was going to get to the good stuff, some stupid flip remark would be made and the chapter or discussiong would end. Very difficult reading. Too much about prepress. Not enough about photoshop, scanning and color management. Reads like childish manerishums. Author's have very immature writing styles.
Too basic, no meat.......2000-10-13
I bought the book sight unseen based on the glowing reviews here.
I wanted to get specific, detailed insight to which scanners worked well, and how to get great and consistant color out of them.
I got none of that. There was no detailed instruction on how to make and use color profiles with scanners.
They talk "about" scanning quite a lot, but give no hard specifics. Often the advice is that "more expensive scanners work better." That's something that I didn't need the book to tell me.
It does cover a great deal of basics for first-timer users, but little for people who already know how to pump pixels.
Every time I thougt it might get into some of the details I wanted, the chapter ended.
It is written too casually for me. It appears to be written by a few guys who have been around publishing. It reads like a collection of casual "shop talk," more than hard info. The authors occasionally get in over their heads technically and make some mistakes trying to explain things that they admit they don't understand, like how JPEG compression works.
I returned my copy, a great thing about Amazon. I got nothing out of it. One cool trick they suggested for Photoshop didn't even work. (c) 2000 kenrockwell.com
