5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-09-27

Its a really good book for starters, especially with a weak background in math.. it may be little too exhaustive but overall I think its a good deal!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good in theory, short on examples.......2007-02-20

First all, everyone wishing to learn probability comes from different background, math level, and motivation. There is no book that suits all. Recently I needed to know something about moment generating functions. With all my advanced engineering background though, I find it difficult to get into probability.

So I bought the following supposedly introductory texts: Ross, DeGroot, Stirzaker, Bersekas & Tsitsiklis. To me, Ross seems like a review lesson to cram for finals; it's choke full of examples but fairly spare in exposition. DeGroot is the opposite, long on descriptions but short on examples; by the time it finishes describing the problem, you have forgotten how to solve it. Probability is set up more as a prelude to statistics in the second half of the book. Stirzaker calls his book "elementary" the way Sherlock Holmes dismissed a case after slogging all night through the English bogs. It is more for the well-drilled boys from elite British "public" (private actually) schools. Bersekas comes closest to what I look for in a text, straightforward in prose with a judicious selection of examples to explain theory.

For beginners, the best approach I found, in the end, was to go the local community college and buy the text used for Finite Math. Usually, there are 3 to 4 chapters that introduce probability.

Such a text is aimed an audience from wider academic and language backgrounds, as community colleges are mandated to do. Therefore, probability is taught in simple, plain-spoken language crafted through multiple editions. One such is Finite Math, by Karl J. Smith; however, many others like it will do. For self-study, one might start in the chapter on probability to understand the author's approach, then go back a chapter or two to pick up the permutation and combinatorial math needed to calculate probability. Another alternative is just to enroll in a Finite Math course at a community college. Generally, such a course stops at Markov's chain which is enough to get you jump started in probability.

In any case, a good Finite Math text gives plenty of examples with clear, succinct, and layman-like explanation to help you tackle Ross' book or supplement any other at a higher level. If you plan to apply probability to your work, then shop around for another text after you get the basics. The thicker tomes delve more into theory which is good because real life problems are seldom like the examples given. However you can't go wrong by planting your feet solidly on a good Finite Math text first

5 out of 5 stars A Lucid Introduction to the Underlying Math.......2007-01-11

DeGroot's text is an introduction to the mathematical side of probability and statistics. Of the books on that subject, it is by far the most lucid I have seen. Its intended audience will likely find it useful for self study or for supplemental study in comparable courses that use other textbooks.

This book is not an applied, take-you-by-the-hand tutorial on applied statistical techniques, nor is it a failed take-you-by-the-hand tutorial on applied statistical techniques. It is not a text for the social scientist who wishes to learn statistics at home.

DeGroot's text is what it is, and I recommend it enthusiastically in its intended contexts.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Use For Self Study.......2006-10-30

This book is not meant for self study. This book is too theoretical, and it does not give enough basic examples. It is too abstract. I do not recommend this book to anyone.

2 out of 5 stars Good Book ? Yes....For Self Study? NOOOOO !!.......2006-03-09

I am doing a self study and do not have any facility to get help of any instructor. I purchased the book after got good reference from some of my friends. The content of the book is pretty good...BUT when it comes to the problems...there are a very very few worked out examples (as usual they are the easiest ones)...Addition to that the publisher decided to earn every bits of pennies. So they created a Student's solution manual. No where in the publisher's site anything mentioned about the manual. But when I purchased , found that the manual has solution for ONLY Odd numbered solution (for them the answers are given in the original book). I was wondering whether they have another solution manual for EVEN numbered problems...!!!

The instructor's manual is out of stock and you cannot download it from the publisher's site (unless you are an Instructor which I am not).

Now I am wondering how I can get help on the even numbered problems....any idea???

Book Description

This is a new edition of the precalculus text developed by the Consortium based at Harvard University and funded by a National Science Foundation Grant. The text is thought-provoking for well-prepared students while still accessible to students with weaker backgrounds. It provides numerical and graphical approaches as well as algebraic approaches to give students another way of mastering the material. This approach encourages students to persist, thereby lowering failure rates. A large number of real-world examples and problems enable students to create mathematical models that will help them understand the world in which they live.

The focus is on those topics that are essential to the study of calculus and these topics are treated in depth.

1 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE BOOK!.......2007-06-27

I am currently taking pre-cac in summer school and I fear I will have to drop the class! This book is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE in presenting concepts and helping to guide you through the process on figuring things out. There is no reason why I should read a book, be confused, read it again, be more confused, ask friends to read it and have them be confused. I don't know how educators get away with writting books of such low quality-- and I have even less of an idea how a school chooses to use such a book. Minimally, instructors should be looking here to see the absolutely horrible feedback on this book and CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TEXT! It seems the only reason why my summer school is using this book is due to the fact that it was written by some professors here. For such a prestigous university that surely strikes of a highly unintelligent decision.

4 out of 5 stars from a student..........2007-06-25

I did appreciate the applications approach, but I felt like with almost every lesson that there were not nearly enough practice problems. A formula would be introduced with only two practice problems, only one of which is in the back of the book (of course). In my study groups, we would work those same two problems a few times and feel confident, then bomb the exam. If I remember correctly, I believe you can order an extra workbook in this series. I would recommend this text IN ADDITION to a workbook.

The biggest problem that I saw with my department adopting this textbook is that the instructors really do not teach the applications approach. I would go home to study and find that the text did not follow at all what we were covering in class. The innovative approach of the textbook was thereby lost as we flipped back and forth between the chapters trying to cobble together problems to match lectures.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful precalculus deep inside the functions and modeling.......2006-05-10

I really have difficulties to understand some reviewers given one star for such a wonderfull book. If you read this book before Uni, you will have a stable ground for calculus.

All frequently used functions and their practical usage as modelling tools are lucidly explained. I finally know what hyperbolic functions are, I finally know how the path from given data to an appropriate model. I finally know how can I practically sketch seemingly complex but simple functions.

It's strength based on model oriented approach to functions. This has pratical value for all candidate engineers...

Without any doubt I'll give five stars to acknowledge the authors.

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete, discouraging, Unhelpfull book that only hinders the learning process.......2006-04-27

This is probably the most incoplete, inarticulate book I've ever used so far in my 3 years in college. It fails to COMPLETELY explain ALL THE MANY concepts you will ,sort-of ummmm, need to pass the class, tests or even complete the problems within the book. Expect to buy at least one other pre-calc text to clearly explain EVERYTHING this book consistently DOESN'T. This book is not a student-friendly one, its more of an EXPERT MATHEMETICIAN-FRIENDLY text book, written for people who already have lots of experience with pre-calculous. First time precalculous students should not actually expect to learn from this book or be able to count on this book as a reliable source to turn to during homework assignments or study sessions... As this book consistently fails to articulate even the most simple of precalculous concepts. If you don't beleive mine along with most other negative ratings of this book, go ahead and compare this book to almost any other precalc text book for yourself. You'll quickly see that EVEN THOUGH YOU'VE PAID A GENEROUS AMOUNT OF MONEY FOR THIS BOOK TO TEACH YOU, this book FAILS TO PERFORM EVERY SINGLE STEP OF THE WAY, PARTICULARLY when you need it to CLEARLY EXPLAIN SOMETHING TO YOU most. REALLY THIS BOOK ONLY MAKES IT HARDER TO UNDERSTAND ANYTHING IT ATTEMPTS TO EXPLAIN. My recommendation is that you buy "THE COMPLETE IDIOTS GUIDE TO PRECALCULOUS" by W. Michael Kelly, an author who thouroughly prooves his TEACHING SKILLS, COMPETENCE and ABILITY TO SUCCESFULLY ARTICULATE concepts so students can actually get some learning out of the time they spend reading his CLEAR, HELPFULL EXPLENATIONS that will actually help you in precalculous.

2 out of 5 stars A travesty for the money.......2006-01-19

The only reason I give it two stars is that the word problems and models are interesting and realistic. The student solutions manual is a rip-off because it does not model each type of problem, nor does it lend itself to greater understanding and clarification. I usually get straight "A's" in math courses because I pour all effort necessary into homework and understanding. I just find myself being frustrated every time I open this book. The examples in each chapter just give me a headache. It is assuming and poorly written. Colleges that require this book for courses in pre-calc and trig should think twice.

3 out of 5 stars Moon guidebooks vary quite a bit!.......2007-09-20

I usually buy Lonely Planet or Moon guidebooks for US travel. Often I carry both. Lonely Planet books tend to be very straightforward and consistent, often the product of a "committee" of authors. Moon's books seem more conversational in tone and are the product of one or two authors and therefore can vary more in style. I usually prefer Moon books to Lonely Planet due to their more descriptive nature. This is not one of them. This book lacks the imagination in style that most Moon books have. Planning a trip to Oregon? Go Lonely Planet.

5 out of 5 stars Moon-Excellent tour guide.......2007-03-12

I enojoy Moon guides every time I read them. very detailed, updated with all relevant info, phone numbers, etc.
Gives you the tip for the non common places, guide you to places along roads in resolutios of feets and where to find the places.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide To Oregon.......2007-03-02

MOON OREGON is one of the most comprehensive guides to Oregon ever published. Whether you're looking for the urban pleasures of the Portland area and/or the Eugene/Corvallis/Salem corridor, the healthy activity ideas of Eastern Oregon or the Oregon Coast, or a little of everything, this book has it for you. Even if you're not travelling to Oregon any time soon, you'll find MOON OREGON to be an interesting and exciting read.

5 out of 5 stars For the nature lover in you.......2006-11-27

This is a good book for those that plan to spend most of their trip on the trail, or in the national, state, and local parks. It is also great for those that like to stay in a nice hotel and look out their windows at nature and wonder what's out there. In this way, the book should be an addition to your information that you gather before going to Oregon. Frommers is a good companion book. Between the two should give you enough information to make good decisions on where to stay, where to eat, and what to see. It is an accurate guide with resources for more information. We went to Oregon and stayed in just about every lodging type there is - hotel, motel, lodge, b&b, vacation home, and cabin. Moon was a handy companion the whole time.

4 out of 5 stars Out of Date.......2006-09-20

The Moon Handbook for Oregon, sixth edition, is packed with interesting information and history about areas throughout Oregon. Includes scenic pictures and some nice black and white street maps of various cities with points of interest labeled. The book is broken into regions (Portland, Willamette Valley, Coastal Oregon, etc.), which makes referencing handy when traveling through an area. Also has a nice index at the back.

My primary complaint is that the book does not appear to be current. Although the publishers date on Amazon indicates that the sixth edition was released in 2004, the price estimates for lodging and attractions were significantly off, noteworthy hotels and restaurants built since 2002 were not mentioned, and several restaurants were closed.

Overall a good reference for location, things to see, weather, outdoor recreation and sights. Just take with a grain of salt that the price quotes and lists are current or complete. I'm hanging on to my 2006 AAA tourbook for current(though less detailed)information on lodging, dining and attactions in Oregon.

Book Description

"A collection of chilling stories...eerily believable and truly spooky...very strongly recommended..."--Midwest Book Review

Most people think of ghosts as rare, elusive creatures that are more or less inaccessible to the average Joe. Sure, we read about them, watch TV shows about them and tell stories about them, but we'll probably never run into one--right? Don't be so sure. Even if you've never personally encountered a ghost, chances are you know someone who has.

The Ghost Next Door takes a revealing look into the lives of average, everyday people from across the country who have had experiences in the realm of the unexplained. Whether you're a true believer in ghosts or a hard-nosed skeptic, you're sure to get a chill or two when you read about the woman who was visited by her grandfather...on the night of his funeral! Or the man who was forced to move by a troublesome spirit...only to find it had followed him!

As you make your way through these and other genuinely spooky stories, you'll probably find that ghostly encounters are a lot more common than you had imagined. Could there be a "haunted house" in your town? Perhaps on your very street? Maybe even right next door?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not as scary as you would think. .......2007-09-16

This book was a nice collection of short stories, but not as scary as you would think it would be. The reviews make is seem hard to put down. But it wasn't hard at all. There were one or two stories that were creepy. But as a whole, I was dissapointed. I didn't like the way that the author presented the stories either. It was confusing. He didn't introduce the person he got the story from well. His comments on each story, written in italics, and with too many ellipsis marks were overdone...
I don't need to have the author's voice try to scare me as I read. If it is a good story, it will do that naturally. I wouldn't label this book as a waste of money, because it goes on my shelf with the rest of my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Reading.......2007-04-18

This is one of the better books I have read on the subject of Ghosts! It is kinda creepy, and facinating and will keep you interested till the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, but it IS creepy!.......2006-06-20

I have to say that I really enjoyed this title. A bit short, yes, but quality writing. And for me, it's more about quality than quantity. I'd rather have a concise book that is interesting and well-written than a Bible-sized book that's stuffed with poor writing and dry information stripped from some internet site.

One reviewer states that the "creepiness factor" of this book pales in comparison to books by King or Straub. Obviously, somebody needs to point out to that reviewer that King and Straub write FICTION. This book is about REAL occurrences. And, actually, I found parts of this book to be QUITE creepy, especially given that these things actually happened.

The Ghost Next Door is recommended reading by yours truly.

3 out of 5 stars Average but entertaining.......2006-04-28

No one need worry about reading this book alone in the middle of a stormy night. This is an average but entertaining book, and nothing much beyond a "creepy feeling" occurs in it. Unlike the macabre stories of a King or a Staub where a bump in the night is sure to leave you hiding under the bedcovers or calling your best friend for the reassuring sound of a familiar voice, this book is a collection of the strange events that most of us have had in the course of our lives. There is probably no one who hasn't had some sort of run-in with the unexplainable, something that reminds one of the familiar tales told around the camp fire on family outings or scout jamborees. Most of them are of strange sounds at unusual times of day, doors that open when they shouldn't be able to, or lights that go on or off without the assistance of a human hand. It is primarily this simple type of story that rings as true and strikes a familiar tone. An interesting book and one that will reassure the reader that they aren't "the only one" to have such experiences.

As for the why of this phenomenon, read Beyond Coincidence by Martin Plimmer).

3 out of 5 stars Great easy read whether you believe or not........2006-02-25

I am pretty agnostic as to the existence of ghosts, but I enjoy reading people's accounts of encounters. This book is a very easy read. It is no literary masterpiece--it reads more like an unedited diary of other people's oral histories--but it is entertaining. I like to read one or two of the stories at a time as a nice, brief break.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Artist and his Work.......2000-05-19

This book was fascinating! Mark Morris' work is brilliant, beautiful and new. This book offers insight into the artist's childhood and early introduction to the arts, traces the evolution of his company from its humble and informal beginnings to its present place as one of the outstanding modern companies in the world, and explores the themes Morris' work so often addresses. The insight into his complex character makes watching his work still more rewarding. Includes many great photos.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up to date.......2004-03-31

My wife and I travel to Atlantic Canada every summer. We have used a variety of guidebooks including this one, which is definitely our favorite. The authors have obviously spent a lot of time in the region, and as a result they have come up with a good range of places to see, things to do, and where to stay and eat.

The reccommendations of where to stay are particularly helpful. We find the provincial tourist guides good, but their accommodation listings won't really tell you which are good or bad. This book does, and we find the reviews both accurate and very helpful. Seafood is the favorite food around Atlantic Canada, and the authors have obviously enjoyed researching this section of the book, with choices we rarely find fault with.

Also importantly, the book is very well organized and easy to find your way around. There are no color photos, which is a shame, but otherwise, this book is a worthwhile investment if you're traveling to this part of Canada.

    Book Description

Today, the physical scale model is a centrepiece for design education, celebrated practices and architecture’s public relations. The development of digital fabrication devices has made model manufacture even more pervasive. The physical model is the most accessible form of architectural communication. Clients and the general public seem to immediately respond to and understand the model, over blueprints and computer simulations.

Many architects use finished models for presentations, competitions and exhibitions. Others also embrace sketch models as quick, economic and flexible generative tools. It is only with the rise of the virtual that the advantages and disadvantages of more traditional models can be fully evaluated. As attested by this book, we are now at an important watershed for the model in architecture. Practitioners and educators alike are seeking to fully understand the multiplicity of model types and how they might be strategically deployed at appropriate stages in the design process.

The historic role that the model has played is outlined with attention paid to Alberti, John Soane, the Bauhaus and education reforms. A cultural history is offered by examining models in the guise of toys, food, cinema, product design, souvenirs, narrative and art. Model theories are considered and tied to specific examples in the field. New technologies and creative combinations of traditional model-making techniques are evaluated. Kinetic, multi-media, nightscape and interdisciplinary models reveal the broad scope and exceptional versatility offered by this important tool. Models: Architecture and the Miniature focuses on current model use and experimentation by architects across the globe including David Chipperfield, Peter Eisenman, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Coop Himmelb(l)au, Daniel Libeskind, Greg Lynn and UN Studio.

    2 out of 5 stars could've been a LOT better.......2007-08-19

no character development and written in a very dry way that dehumanized the story for me. Would've liked more insight into Sharee. Jerry just came off looking like a greedy loser. I bought this book because I caught half of the Lifetime movie starring Eric Roberts recently and was puzzled by some of the plot points. thought it would be better explained in the book, but the truth was even more convoluted. Like another review said, it was basically transcripts with no emotion.

    5 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book.......2007-07-24

I did enjoy the book. I wanted to see what these people looked like as I had seen the movie. It was somewhat different from the movie of course. How sad and tragic this story is.

    5 out of 5 stars Fatal Error/Fatal Desire.......2006-04-15

This book in now a movie on Lifetime TV called: Fatal Desire starring Anne Heche & Eric Roberts, if any of you read the book check out the movie it is one of Lifetime's best movies! It's steamy & sexy! The acting is suberb!

3 out of 5 stars True stories are the best stories.......2006-04-02

Fatal Error is a good book to read. I think internet stories should be told and this book was made into a movie for TV. Another book titled "Instant Message" (IM) is based on a true story by Barbara Jones and is about a black man and a white woman from alabama who had a relationship from the internet. So over all these internet stories are worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars The True Sharee Miller.......2005-03-24

Sharee Miller is theperson you read aboutin this bok. You think how could one person be this messed up and do this to actual people. I think that to myself everyday she is my ex stepmother. Sharee is the way she seems in the book but the funny thing is she feals no mercy no hurt no guilt for any actions she makes. She has about 20 different lifestyles depending on what she is gonna scam out of you and trust me she dont belong in prision she belongs in a straight jacket.

5 out of 5 stars Like the show but without pictures.......2007-05-16

Looking backwards, it's impossible not to compare the BBC line to the former New Adventures line of books, especially with the latter's more emotional and complex stories, as well as a greater desire to experiment. It produced a lot of misses as well as hits, but the hits were as good as anything out there. This far into the BBC line, the score is a bit murkier, with some well told stories that are just that, well told stories without any sense that they're trying to push the envelope and do something new with a thirty year old series. This particular novel is decent and readable but ultimately there's nothing in it to really stick with you after the book is over. The plot is almost "column A and column B" where the author picks an interesting historical setting (Victorian England) and throws in an alien element that has no place there (the Zygons) and lets the inevitable hilarity ensue. Which would be all well and good if we hadn't seen that setting done before and better ("Evil of the Daleks" and "The Talons of Weng-Chiang", the latter referenced extensively here) so it just feels like a retread. All the aspects of the time period are here (factories, men covered in soot, fog, etc) and presented well, Morris has a good feel for the time but can't really overcome a story that feels almost paint by numbers by the end of it. The Zygons have a plan to take over stuff, the Doctor figures it out and sets out to stop them. That's pretty much it, a couple of the Zygons are characterized well (the scientist especially) but also have some weird cultural theories (they have to follow through on a plan even if they realize it's not going to work because they don't want to look bad . . . keep your foreign policy comments to yourself) and I never get the sense that they're a tangible threat, even if they are responsible for some spooky moments. The Doctor deals with them in his fashion and makes a mistake in the process but it seems more like an "oops" kind of thing, presented to show that he's falliable but nothing much done with it beyond that. He's still written well but I don't think they had a firm grip on his personality then. Sam remains as useless as ever, mostly existing to provide sassy one liners every so often, not having much beyond her other than "I am a contrary rebel and I can handle myself". Otherewise, it's readable, it's passable but it's certainly not exciting. It reads, like the majority of the BBC books by this point, as an okay episode of the TV series, insteading of using the print medium to tell stories that TV couldn't do (I do like how the copy on the back of the novel says "Featuring the Zygons!" even though in the book itself it's clearly meant to be a surprise reveal . . . it harkens back to the old days when you'd have a "of the Daleks" story and their presence would be held off until the first cliffhanger). Again, it's early but they had the New Adventures as a model, by this time we might have had the merely okay "Timewyrm: Genesys" and "Apocalypse" novels but we also had the excellent "Exodus" and "Revelation". Will we get such books here? Only time will tell.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Plague of Aquatic Dinosaurs!.......2002-03-09

My favourite Eighth Doctor comic strip is "Endgame" because it is a perfect visual example to what is achieved in "The Bodysnatchers" - the blending together of past elements to produce a whole new adventure, in this case the Doctor and Sam enlisting the aid of the gentlemanly pathologist George Litefoot (last seen in "The Talons of Weng-Chiang") to solve the gruesome disappearance of a hapless employee at the bottling factory of the sinister Nathaniel Seers. ...
As I said before, a brilliant mix of old characters with new plots. I am glad that this trend has continued in such stories like "Genocide", "Legacy of the Daleks" and the two book "Interference" storyline by Lawrence Miles.

    5 out of 5 stars I wish this were a video!.......1999-12-23

This is an excellent book! The Doctor is prefect and so is the setting. One becomes depressed and feels chills when immersed in the dank, murky atmosphere of Victorian London. We're talking fog enshrouded streets, walks along the banks of the dirty Thames, all fodder for the imagination.

The return of Professor Litefoot is delightful and the new and improved Zygons terrific. It was wonderful to have the chance to delve into their society and technology. The poison stickers inside their suckered-palms was a nice addition.

When the Doctor realizes he has made a horrible mistake it is a chance to see that he can be failable and that he has not basically changed in all of his regenerations. His childlike wonder of discovery and his love of all life no matter what form it takes is a constant.

Do yourself a favor and BUY THIS BOOK!

4 out of 5 stars it was great........1999-09-28

I think this book was great.

when I got to the part when the 8th. dr. got poisoned I said "aw man." but was happy that he was ok.

I also felt sorry that he accidentally got rid of the whole Zygon group.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......1999-07-08

I thought this book was just great, it was very readable, and fast paced and as far as the action went, I thought it was as near to classic Doctor Who as we'll see. I didn't notice it being overly gory, it wasn't like it was out of context. When a vicious alien race bent on conquering the planet plops down in the middle of town, wouldn't you expect some bloodshed? I enjoyed the characters, I thought they were reasonably believable.
