Customer Reviews:
Outstanding and detailed analysis of plot structures.......2007-10-13
I'm still working my way through this book, but so far I'm very impressed. I've learned a great deal about the structure of plots and scenes. The author provides very practical and easily understood guidelines. Highly recommended.
For those who seek clarity, you may begin here........2007-10-08
Not having the luxury of an MFA, I struggled to create my interpretation of a marketable novel until I finally faced the truth. I didn't know what I was doing.
"Okay then," I thought, "what exactly am I lacking?"
I attended a very good workshop which revealed what I had already come to suspect. My writing had too much imagery and not enough, plot or structure. I went looking for a solution and, would you believe it, I found there was a book written just for me.
"Plot & Structure, Techniques and exercises for crafting a plot that grips readers from start to finish," by James Scott Bell was the first step on my road to literary recovery. I followed this wonderful little book with another, "Techniques of the Selling Writer" by Dwight V. Swain. The two volumes go together well, in my opinion, complimenting one another on a common list of topics.
I'd recommend them both as well as the rest of the "Write Great Fiction" series from Writer's Digest Books. You might also consider, "Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, How to Edit Yourself Into Print" by Renni Brown and Dave King.
I needed to find better footing, to bone up on fiction basics. These books plus a subscription to "the Writer" magazine have been my school. If you desire a better grasp of the basics, you might want to start here.
Michael, doing better, in Seattle.
The first book that you must read.......2007-10-03
This is a good introductory book, and works for various types of media, like cinema (screenplay) and comics.
It's a simple and objective book, direct to the point. It's interesting to note that other books like Screenplay by Syd Field and Story by Robert Mckee will be more valuable after you read Plot & Structure, because now you will have a better understanding of story construction.
It's not a revolutionary book, but it's very solid and highly practical.
Recommended.
An Invaluable Writing Tool.......2007-09-08
This book is a must have for every fiction writer, non-fiction writer who wants to try fiction, or for someone who dreams of becoming an author.
I write my books intuitively. Then my first publisher suggested I start teaching creative writing workshops.
"Great idea," I told her.
But deep inside I was scared silly. How the heck would I go about teaching something that I was doing intuitively?
Thank goodness for this book! Now I can see and understand the process that I've been using as a writer. This is not only helping me improve my skills, it's also helping me have a lot more fun writing my next book.
Great book!.......2007-09-02
This is the only how-to book on writing that I have actually finished! I found it to be very entertaining, and SO useful! I am a very unorganized plotter; I just write the story. He actually had some tips for writers just like me that didn't entail "write an outline or else"!
I would definitely recommend this book!
Book Description
Can anything separate us from God's love? Does He really love us, no matter what?
How does He feel about me when I snap at anything that moves? When I've failed as a parent? When my thoughts are gutter-level? When my tongue is sharp? Have I drifted too far? Waited too long? Slipped too much? The answer is found in one of life's sweetest words-grace.
It is God who lovingly holds us in the eternal grip of His grace. Our good deeds won't help. Perfect performance is not required. The God who made us has redeemed us and covered our sinfulness with His righteousness. His holiness is sufficient for all our sin. And that's grace.
Best-selling author Max Lucado proclaims the grace of God to be "the greatest discovery of my life." And he wants to share that discovery by taking us on a journey through the mountaintop truths found in Paul's letter to the Romans. "Romans is the grandest treatise on grace ever written. You'll find the air fresh and the view clear."
Customer Reviews:
One of Lucado's Best.......2007-09-05
This is my favorite Lucado book so far. He explains the true meaning of grace and it's role in our salvation in a beautiful and insightful way. The illustrations used throughout the book really drive the point home. Great book for Christians and for those who are still searching.
terrific.......2007-01-17
A great book on the study of Romans. Every CoC member should read it and let go of our Pelagian attitudes.
Grip of Grace? Get a Grip!.......2007-01-01
This book is a Bible Study.
I got it for Christmas and it absolutely ruined the birthday of Christ for me. I mean who wants to hear about Christ on Christmas?
This book proves that there is no involvement of God in our daily lives; because why would God want to ruin my Christmas by giving me this book?
Oh, and it is horribly written. I mean bad. I mean grade-school level.
The author must be intellectually immature, just like people who read this book and enjoy it.
Learn About Amazing Grace.......2006-11-09
Two years ago I began a study of the grace of God, and this volume greatly encouraged me.
This analogies are great; his use of Scripture is carefully handled. I highly recommend this volume if somone is attempting to discover what is grace.

Book Description
Men tend to express their anger differently than women do. Research shows men are often more violent and less willing to confront and deal with their emotions than women. Written by a psychologist who specializes in the treatment of male rage, Beyond Anger shows the angry - and miserable - man how to change his life and relationships for the better. This book helps men understand their anger by explaining what the specific symptoms of chronic anger are and by showing angry men how their actions negatively affect family, friends, and coworkers. It helps men control violent feelings by using simple exercises - developed especially for men - to identify when and why anger occurs and by helping them form new habits to prevent anger before it starts. Women, too, will learn essential strategies for understanding and helping the angry men in their lives. Beyond Anger is honest, tough, and real.

Great Book!.......2007-09-10
My husband found this book so informative and easy to read he read the book in 2 sessions. He could not put it down and he doesn't like to read books. Gave him a lot to think about and work on. I really think this book will be a turning point in his life. This book is great for anyone to read about the man in their life wheither father, son, husband etc.
Does he know me?.......2007-08-23
Very relatible...it blows my mind how much I can relate to it. A very good tool for men with anger issues. Enjoyed it.
Very Helpful.......2007-03-16
If you need a place to start - this is a great place!
Excellent.......2007-01-04
This book was written by a Psychologist in my home town which I had the pleasure of his councel in relation to my ex-husband who was a very angry man. This book nor the counceling saved my marriage but it helped my ex see that the problems in his life were due to constant anger boiling below the surface that would quickly with little provocation erupt into rage. The major obstacle is getting "your loved one" to begin reading. Once that is achieved they will relate on many levels with the information in this book. My ex's exact words were, "THIS IS ME .... " He found out the whole world wasn't wrong, just his perception of it.
great read, very helpful.......2006-07-03
I bought the book for my husband and so far he is very impressed by it. He said it hits many valid points about anger in men, and he highly recommends it for any man with an anger problem.
Book Description
This text offers a thorough approach to understanding alcohol--its physical and psychological effects on an individual, as well as its emotional impact on the family. It is the only comprehensive, self-contained book to cover the range of psychological factors, physical complications, treatment options, and family concerns; easy to read, it is suitable for academics, students, or families of alcoholics.
Customer Reviews:
Could Use a Proofreader.......2006-09-27
It is necessary to note that this book is required for CADC licensure in some certification programs. As such, it is so poorly written and organized, I am finding it difficult to get through it. I am disappointed to have paid significant money for what is assumably quality research and information about substance use and abuse, presented in a manner that is careless and disorganized. There are innumerable grammatical errors and the author lacks focus and consistancy within paragraphs. It is inexcusable to read a "textbook," where basic sentence structure and writing is neglected. While the information contained is assumably valid and of great value, its presentation is lacking at best. I hope that future additions are more cost effective and adhere to a higher standard of professional educational writing.
Poorly written.......2006-06-22
This is a surprisingly poorly written textbook. One can tell that more and more information has simply been cut and pasted into this book over the years. The continuity and organization of the book suffers. The authors (or a new author) should consider writing a new text from scratch --- one that encompasses the entire field of substance abuse counseling more comprehensively.
loosening the grip.......2006-03-13
Overall, this is a good book in learning the concepts of alcoholism
A required source book for addictions counselors........2005-08-09
This is a well written and comprehensive resource for the practicing addictions counselor as well as those just starting out. There is no better single source of information on the process and treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction and I have continued to use this book long after passing the written exam and becoming licensed.
Loosening the Grip.......2001-09-08
This book is a must for anyone studing to be a Substancce Abuse Counselor. The author covers everything one would need to know regarding the disease of addiction.
Historical information regarding alcohol and drugs is also provided.
Having worked in the field of substance abuse counseling for a number of years, I have noticed that hearing officers for the Secretary of State of Illinois often use this book and quote from it when writing out their decisions on DUI offenders seeking reinstatement of their driving privileges through the formal hearing process.
I make sure I keep my copy in my bookshelf for a reference book.
Book Description
Moving beyond Mastery of Hand Strength, John Brookfield continues his tradition of breaking new ground in grip training: John's creative new exercises and unbridled enthusiasm are what The Grip Master's Manual is all about. John begins with some general training pointers, including how to practice good hand health, and then shows you how to build your overall upper body and lower arm strength, laying a foundation for the specific hand and lower arm training that follows.
And what follows is typical of John: a wide array of innovative techniques and exercises designed to motivate and challenge you -- and to build your hand strength from every conceivable angle, along with your dexterity and muscle control. John, who invented what are now commonly called "strap holds," is also your guide to "climbing the mountain" to close the No. 3 Captains of Crush Gripper. Finally, John leads you through the consummate grip master's repertoire: bending steel bars, bending horseshoes, coiling and scrolling iron, bending nails, and even tearing cards.
John wrote this book to help you take your hand strength to the next level, and if you follow his advice, we're sure you will get there and then some. If you want to be a grip master in the true sense of the word, get your hands on The Grip Master's Manual and then go out and crush a can of Coke.
Customer Reviews:
This guy is insane..........2006-09-18
Upon purchasing and reading through this book, I have come to the conclusion that the author is insane!
Brookfield really takes a "backwoods" approach to his training. For the most part there is no fancy machines or complex contraptions that he uses to build grip and hand strength...Much of it revolves around using bricks or long pieces of boards to create resistance...sounds easy but it's not.
I will admit that despite having read the book, I haven't put alot of effort into building my grip strength. It seemed to me that it would require plenty of dedication to accomplish so I never truly persued it.
Apparently this guy is an expert in the field...Being that there aren't many books available on this topic, it's worth reading and seeing if any of the training methods work for you.
122 Pages of Excellence.......2005-09-07
This book is THE book when it comes to grip training and becoming a well rounded athlete. Brookfield lays this book out very logically starting with a section on getting ready. He then progresses through: Advanced Lower Arm and Grip Training; Advanced Grip Challenges; and Steel Bending. No matter where you turn to this book is filled with helpful tips and ideas to get your workouts going.
I can honestly say this book and the ironmind grippers have already improved my hand strength immensely. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to acquiring Brookfield's other book "Mastery of Hand Strength."
The Master shares his secrets.......2005-05-30
John Brookfield IS Mr. Hands. He is also a very sharing person who will gladly help others to succeed. The Grip Master's Manual is a superb book with many unusual ideas for exercise and hand health. If you are interested in building a stronger grip, you MUST read this book. If you're not interested in building a stronger grip, you are probably not interested in performing near the top in any athletic endeavours. In a nutshell, if you want to be better at almost anything that requires use of your hands, you should build your grip and this book is a true asset. Highly recommended.
Why You Need To Do Grip Training!.......2005-03-31
Let me say that I have not read Brookfields other book "Mastery of Hand Strength" and was a little hesitant to buy this book when I heard that I would have to construct equipment myself. I am a complete klutz when it comes to carpentry or anything of the nature and didn't like the idea of constructing anything. Believe me, my fears were misplaced. Most of the tools that you need are laying around your yard.
If you are into bodybuilding, please dont ignore grip training, because you think it will not improve your appearance. Grip training has the been the best thing that has happened to building up my forearms. Not only are mine getting bigger after a mere two months of grip training, but they are becoming highly vascularized as well. Grip exercises are far superior to wrist curls. The only gadget you might want to buy is one of the grippers from Ironmind at http://www.ironmind.com. Brookfield has a column he writes for that website and you might determine if you would like to explore grip training further by reading some of his articles there.

Most readable for the layperson.......2003-08-26
This is a book that has been around for many years and is regularly updated to reflect the current knowledge on alcohol and alcoholism. I have used it as a text for undergraduates for a number of years and still find it to be the most comprehensive and readable book on the subject around. If you are a professional or simply a person interested in the subject, it is likely to have the information you are looking for. It is NOT a book solely about alcoholism, but is about alcohol and how it affects (physiologically, medically, socially, behaviorally)those who consume it.

Depends where you're coming from.......2004-10-15
As a complete novice to accounting concepts I bought this book because I wanted to understand what type of information I need to track as a freelance professional services provider. I read all of Part 1 (several chapters) and can't say I know more than I did when I started. If you want to understand the difference between cash & accrual methods, the reason for single or double entry, the purpose of income statements, or how bookkeeping can help you as a management tool, look around at some other books before buying this sight unseen.

Customer Reviews:
Too Little for Too Much.......2006-06-09
I totaly concur with the other review. Not enough real GRIP info. I've been a grip for over 10 years and actually thought I'd get something usefull, but actually this book is just the last few chapters of the Grip Book, drawn out, for 50 bucks. I mean, yea there's an illustration of mounting on a DC3 Plane, but its crappy and nonspecific. I mean there's almost more AC and Electric info than Grip. Underwater Exposure Housings? Ummm not Grip Dept. I'm just getting more into rigging and wanted to see more real world stuff, not even a mention of speedrail/nurail in the Index or Glossary, and barely a page in between brings it up and we know how important it is in rigging and on the spot ingenuity.
The most important part of this book is "The Big Break", how to act on set for noobs, pretty much.
Poor followup to his grip book.......2004-03-20
I bought his grip book first and was very impressed by its catalogue of grip equipment. It not only explained the purpose of each piece but gave an insiders view on its application as well as a host of other tips. This book is allmost the complete opposite. For the price, I received what amounts to a reprint of some general information from the grip book, plus some reproduced catalog information from the various manufacturers of camera mounts, cranes, trusses, etc. What I expected to find: how to rig a camera to a vehicle, how to rig equipment to structures, scaffolding, etc., how to build rigs or to adapt commercially available equipment. A skinny little book, hardly worth the money.
