5 out of 5 stars Must Have!.......2007-10-10

As a commercial photographer, PShop is a daily tool. I have several other PShop texts, but NONE approaches the excellence of this one. Geek talk is non-existent. This is easy-to-understand for anyone, but the advice for photographers is first-rate, and actually works. The CD material is also first class, and you're going to LOVE their Actions and keyboard Shortcuts to speed up your workflow. Get this!

5 out of 5 stars If you were to only buy one book on Photoshop..........2007-09-24

If you were to only buy one book on Photoshop this should be it. This book is clearly written, comprehensive, and well organized.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manual for perfecting your knowledge of Photoshop.......2007-05-16

I am taking an advanced college course in Photoshop and we are using this as our textbook. The writing is clear and the lessons very helpful in perfecting your knowledge of Photoshop CS2. This book allows you to learn at your own rate without spending mega-bucks on a one day workshop. If your are hesitating about this book, don't - GO FOR IT!

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever!.......2007-05-15

I remember the first book I purchased was Photoshop 4 Artistry. That was back in 1996. I was astonished by the book when I started reading at the time. I was the happiest guy on earth. The book simply tells you everything about the software and concepts of photography that is concerned for professional photographers which is my case. It is still the best book about Photoshop in my opinion, especially if you really want to know how to use the pen to create paths, masks, channels, and all the tools to manipulate your photos. I did not need to buy anymore books about Photoshop since I know what to do in my day by day work, but something in the air told me to check this one, The Photoshop Artistry (CS2). I thought, well ten years has passed by let's see what these guys from New Riders would have implemented beyond the prior mentioned book. The digital section alone is worthwhile buying the book, not to mention the rest. The new format of the book is also very interesting. Top notch! The best ever, you are not going to find a better book about Photoshop and photography all together!

3 out of 5 stars Too basic.........2007-04-25

I just received this book and I'm quite disappointed. Firstly if you are familiar with Photoshop you may find this book way too basic. Even if you are a beginner there are better and more thorough books to help you master Photoshop. This book doesn't examine topics in depth enough to serve as a good teaching aid.
If you are an advanced user looking to learn something new, this book is not the place to find it. While I'm sure that it has some merit, I personally found it too shallow in its coverage; nether suitable for the beginner nor the experienced user.

5 out of 5 stars Good tutorial and well structured.......2007-05-24

I believe this book taught me quite a lot. The tutorial guides you through one project from beginning to end, which also highlights the challenges in the planning phase. It may appear difficult at the beginning (and it is) but Shane explains the contents in an excellent way that makes you want to learn more. The book is definitely for an intermediate to advanced FLASH developer, who have a good grasp of actionscript. If you are new to actionscript this book is definitely NOT for you. Having said that, this book was worth it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand.......2007-05-12

This book does a great job of explaining ActionScript techniques. It seemed like every time a question popped into my head, I found the answer right away in the next paragraph. The author explains things in a way that everyone can understand.

The only problem I had with the book was that the explanations got a little too repetitive sometimes. I think they over-explained things, but I suppose they just wanted to make sure everyone understood it.

4 out of 5 stars Basically Intermediate, Slightly Beyond.......2007-04-19

Add this one to your library, folks!

This book totally lives up to it's title. It is a solid resource for getting things done with Flash. From concept to finshed product, this books walks you through the proper way to accomplish intermediate-level tasks in a straight forward manner. The step-by-step instructions are some of the best I've seen. And I've seen a lot.

It really is best to have some basic knowledge of Flash and to understand the terms and concepts used, but the beginner will also gain a lot from this book. (if they have a glossary nearby and are willing to do some work). The novice, once going through the material, will be a proud intermediate. There also a few advanced techniques touched upon.

For working designers using Flash this is a tremendously useful book. The entire book is a walk-through of building a website that has many features that will come up in design and development: The design process, fonts, integrating your tools, organization and architecture of your project, loading data from text files with LoadVars, formatting text with textFormat class, building slideshows, preloaders, forms, video and audio players, and navigation menus.

And the CD of files and videos are very well-done and extremely helpful.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Is "H.O.T.".......2007-05-06

Shane Rebenschied's Macromedia Flash MX 2004: Beyond the Basics Hands-On-Training (BTB:HOT) is the second book in a small series on teaching would-be developers how to effectively use Macromedia Flash in their web projects.

BTB:HOT is very well written. The author uses very clear instructions and appropriate graphics(screenshots) to illustrate the points being made. It is a very easy read, especially if you are weary of computer programming style books. The HOT series is written as if the instructor is standing beside you and telling you what you need to do.

This books was definitely written for the layman. This book was not written for someone who is looking to take Flash to the next level of professionalism. The book is very short (almost too short), and really doesn't include very much discussion about the possibilities that can happen with a particular project.

After reading this book and working through the examples, I determined that there really isn't anything new in this book that a seasoned web developer couldn't figure out after reading the first book in the series.

To finish, very good book, but just for novices.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-07-22

This book is perfect for the transformation from beginning to intermediate. The tutorials are incredibly thorough plus it guides you through making a whole web site with the most practical functions. I highly recommend this book. I wish they would make more!

5 out of 5 stars Good tutorial book on Flash.......2006-05-17

This is the first book on Flash and this is the first time I am learning Flash MX2004 Pro. So far I have gone through almost a half of the book and I am very pleased with how this book is structured and its CD which contains the project files as I am learning this program with this book. For any beginner, I feel this book will help get you started on learning and using Flash MX2004. I purchased this book's sister edition "Beyound the Basics" so that I can go one step further after I complete this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Intermediate Book, But Only Worth 3 Stars if You Can Program.......2006-03-02

Basically, this is a good book to get you from the initial HOT book on Flash to the more advanced tutorials found on the Macromedia Exchange site. The introduction to LoadVars and LoadMovieClip alone are worth the price of the book.

My only complaint, if you can call it that, would be that if you are coming from a programmer's background, you will skim A LOT of pages. You've got to hand it to the author in how he really takes his time introducing programming to the neophytes, but I found myself actually reading only 1 page out of every 3-6.

If you already know how to program in any language, you could probably find the tutorials online to get by without this book, but the expenditure in time probably wouldn't be worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Written by a good teacher.......2006-01-06

Excellent book. The author has obviously taught classes and adopted a style that can be followed by any type of reader/student. If you are a novice you will have no trouble following each step-by-step lesson and learn the topics covered. When you are finished with the book your skill level will have improved.

If your skills are advanced or intermediate you will be able to get through each lesson quickly and learn another way of accomplishing something. The videos on the CD are good and delve deeper into the topics covered in the book.

One of the main goals of the book is to teach the concept of object oriented programming. As you go through the book you build a web site, or, better, an application that loads the different applications you learn about in the book, all tied together by a navigation section.

The use of winks and jokes may seem inappropriate to some, but it kept things light for me and I even laughed a couple of times.

I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn how to produce Flash applications. You must know the basics of Flash, and you will not learn about tying to databases or using XML or web services. This is why this is the perfect INTERMEDIATE Flash book.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't say a whole lot........2007-09-28

I got the book so I could improve my photography skills for a online jewelry business. I learned a little about paying attention to shadows, but overall I didn't get a whole lot out of this book.

5 out of 5 stars ebay photos that sell.......2007-09-27

I thought the book was a little pricey. I always justify my purchases, if the book contains at least one technicial piece of info, I did not know or it's info I was searching for.
So that being said, I justified my purchase.
It's a good informative book and has a lot of pictures as samples or this is the way to make the shot.
I would recommend this book to anyone going into EBAY as a seller.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Much More Than Just eBay Photos.......2006-09-06

Using simple, lo-tech language and a wealth of color photos, this excellent book can teach anyone to arrange, light, photograph and even edit macro (closeup) pictures. I bought it sight unseen on a friend's recommendation, and it's even better than I thought it would be.
The instructions are always clear and simple, and every instruction is illustrated with full-color, detailed examples. The results make you look like a professional photographer (or could even make you become one!).
I've bought tons of books on Amazon; but this is the first one I've felt compelled to review, because it's so darn good.

5 out of 5 stars My eBay photos will never be the same.......2006-05-19

Not being a true photographer(strictly for business) I looked through many books hoping I could find one that would help me take better photos for eBay. That's when I stumbled on this little gem. I'm sure this stuff is old hat to photo pros and hobbyists, but to those of us who don't know our f-stops from our brackets, this is a God send. My photos look so much better, that I've gotten compliments from friends and buyers (who'd a thought that!) People ask me what kind of camera I use, settings, etc. and my answer is read "eBay Photos That Sell". If nothing else the chapters of Objective and Subjective photos will help most folks (and don't forget the shower curtain). Simple stuff I know, but it makes all the difference in the world. BUY this book! You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2005-12-23

If one takes a look at the items up for sale on eBay, many of the items have pictures. Some of them are stock photos from the manufacturer's website, but the great majority of them are amateur photos taken with a digital camera. The photographic quality of eBay is usually on the lower end of the amateur scale, filled with distracting elements, flash reflections and a host of other problems. The goal of this book is to teach the reader how to take product photos that sell.

The authors of the book do an excellent job of guiding the reader through the process, from the initial setup to taking the photos, to editing them in software. This is a rather non-technical book, and the focus is definitely on the photography and not the image manipulation aspect of product photography. It is written to be understood by the beginner, but has useful tips for advanced photographers as well.

The book is filled with pictures to provide examples of how to transform an everyday object into a visually appealing photograph. The advice and tips given in the book helps beginners solve the common problems of home photography. It is an excellent introduction to product photography and a valuable reference book that no photographer (or eBay seller) should be without.

2 out of 5 stars Shoddy Editing.......2007-05-26

I've had a generally good experience with the Hands on Training series, but I wish I had read a few reviews before purchasing this one. I'm exactly the type of intermediate user that this title is aimed at, and there is plenty to learn from this book. But it is chock full of proofing errors, mistakes that an intermediate or advanced user can probably suss out and compensate for, but that a relative newcomer to DW or CSS could easily be stumped by. Most unforgiveable is the fact that there are errors in the exercise files - alignment and browser display problems, as well as inclusion of files that have already had the exercise steps performed on them - so that in order to to perform the exercise, you have to start at the end, undo all the steps, then perform them. The exercise files are the main reason to buy books in this series, so problems with those files are inexcusable.

Another shortcoming that intermediate users or below should be aware of: the author does a pretty poor job of giving a context and rationale for many of the procedures used in this book-another issue that makes this book a lot more work than it ought to be.

I'd advise anyone thinking of buying this book to look closely at something in the O'Reilly series - maybe the CSS or Website Cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars A Literary Classic!.......2007-05-13

This is a great read if you wish to go to sleep late at night. Okay, I am just kidding, but you know what you are getting into if you are buying this book and it delivers the goods! That's all folks...

2 out of 5 stars Some excellent information, but errors (many of them critical) cannot be overlooked.......2007-01-23

I enjoyed this book thoroughly; I very much appreciated how much information Mr. Lowery tried to cover in a relatively small book. He attempts to bring in more advanced (from a beginner's standpoint) CSS techniques, XML, Ajax, and other topics to the discussion. But, there are many critical errors, both in the book and in the exercise files on the CD-ROM. The errata page for the book does try to make amends for the missing files for Exercise 3, but there are many other exercises that are partially completed or have critical errors which make them render improperly after you are done with the exercise. I am sure that some of the errors are on my part, but the fact there are so many prevalent mistakes and missteps is very disconcerting for someone who is just learning. I went through the first lynda.com Dreamweaver 8 book, and learned a lot. Unfortunately, this book was simply not as well edited.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond the basics.......2007-01-09

Detail instructions giving for you to follow.Gives you more than the basics of dreamweaver.

1 out of 5 stars Not for Intermediate nor Advanced.......2006-10-24

This book has so many faults! The CD that comes with the book does not work in many browsers. Sometimes the exercise files on the CD are already completed. They don't work either.

I have asked for help twice. The first time I was told the problems I identified would be added to the errata list. The second time I was told that the author would review the whole chapter and get back to me in two days. That was a week ago. Still no answers as to why things do not work!

Book Description

In Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, Graphics, and Beyond, author Jennifer Niederst shares the knowledge she's gained from years of web design experience, both as a designer and as a teacher. This book starts from the very beginning--defining the Internet, the Web, browsers, and URLs--so you don't have to have any previous knowledge about how the Web works. Jennifer helps you build the solid foundation in HTML, graphics, and design principles that you need for crafting effective web pages. She also explains the nature of the medium and unpacks the web design process from conceptualization to the final result.

Learning Web Design:

Unlike other beginning books, Learning Web Design leaves no holes in your education. It gives you everything you need to create basic web sites, and will prepare you for more advanced web work. If you are interested in web design, this book is the place to start. After finishing it, you'll be ready for the author's bestselling companion reference, Web Design in a Nutshell.

5 out of 5 stars Be sure to get the 3rd Edition!.......2007-09-13

Hi. This is Jennifer Robbins, the author of Learning Web Design. If you are interested in this title, I highly recommend that you get the Third Edition which is now available. A LOT has changed in the way web sites are built since the second edition of the book was published, and I'd hate for anyone to be getting out-of-date information. Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to (X)HTML, StyleSheets, and Web Graphics

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-03-15

For those looking to start web design this is the book to get. It says illustrated but it should say illustrations on every page. Very very illustrated. One of my favorite things about this book is after every chapter(when HTML is disscused)it provides an appendix showing you the html tags you just learned. Useful as a reference. This book does not leave you hanging. It teaches you every thing you need to create and understand basic websites. About half the book introduces you to html tags and the other portion is about web graphics. Jenn's style of writting is not boring but is often humerous and cozy. I have created 4 websites after reading this book. Buy this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to get a website up and running.......2007-01-10

I needed to understand how domain names and webhosting worked, plus design, program, test, and implement a website quickly. This book was perfect -- extremely well-organized, with a good Table of Contents and index, excellent examples and helpful (but not overwhelming) reference tables. The book had sufficient detail that I could get graphics loaded and use some CSS to make my text look more professional. I launched a good-looking, no-frills site for a club without any fancy animation, and got it up and running in a less than a month of evenings and weekends. The demo software (BBEdit) was invaluable to getting me started. Good treatment as well of issues with .gif, .jpeg, and .png files, and I feel that I can still learn more from this text should I want to make the site more sophisticated. The discussion of tables was especially clear. I recommend this book for anyone, even if you've never designed your own site or written a lick of html. Those wanting to do online forms to allow users to submit data will need to learn Javascript.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML.......2006-11-10

This is this first "How To" book I ever read cover to cover. It works. It is well written, and breaks concepts down without making you feel like a "dummy". It's perfect for a novice like me.

So many things that were a mystery to me were explained. I now can do rollover buttons, animations, add music, etc. But most important is the Web design concepts this book drives home. It teaches how to make a balanced, well structured, and most importantly, user friendly web page. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2006-08-11

Although I have not plowed through this entire book yet, it is shaping up as one of the books I've been looking for to tie up all the different threads that now make up the task of creating a good website. I may never actually create my business website all on my own, but at least I will have familiarity with the various tools that are currently being used so I can intelligently discuss and understand what the professionals are recommending. One of the toughest parts of learning any new technology these days is the constant improvement and changes going on. It's impossible to guess what may become standard and what may be obsolete by the time I finish the book. Books like this at least give an average person like me a fighting chance to keep as current as possible without continuous formal education.

    Book Description

The computer's metaphorical desktop, with its onscreen windows and hierarchy of folders, is the only digital work environment most users and designers have ever known. Yet empirical studies show that the traditional desktop design does not provide sufficient support for today's real-life tasks involving collaboration, multitasking, multiple roles, and diverse technologies. In Beyond the Desktop Metaphor, leading researchers and developers consider design approaches for a post-desktop future.

The contributors analyze the limitations of the desktop environment--including the built-in conflict between access and display, the difficulties in managing several tasks simultaneously, and the need to coordinate the multiple technologies and information objects (laptops, PDAs, files, URLs, email) that most people use daily--and propose novel design solutions that work toward a more integrated digital work environment. They describe systems that facilitate access to information, including Lifestreams, Haystack, Task Gallery, GroupBar, and Scalable Fabric, and they argue that the organization of work environments should reflect the social context of work. They consider the notion of activity as a conceptual tool for designing integrated systems, and point to the Kimura and Activity-Based Computing systems as examples.

Beyond the Desktop Metaphor is the first systematic overview of state-of-the-art research on integrated digital work environments. It provides a glimpse of what the next generation of information technologies for everyday use may look like--and it should inspire design solutions for users' real-world needs.

2 out of 5 stars Too many basic mistakes.......2006-10-07

If you want to localize your website following advice from an author who:

    1) Believes that people in Iran speak Arabic;
    2) Thinks that the "circle" is an accent used in Czech;
    3) Thinks that "Czechoslovakia" still exists;
    4) Thinks that the word "flu" is not understood in the UK;
    5) Thinks that Telugo is a more important language for website localization than Italian;
    6) Thinks that Romansch is related to German;
    7) Thinks that German capitalization is "more complicated than in English"

    by all means go ahead.

4 out of 5 stars This book has gems.......2005-09-12

First of all - I love the books cover - but the watermarked immigration/customs stamps throughout the pages can be a bit distracting. And why page numbers are only given on odd numbered pages I have no idea.

This is the type of book where you read it and think - 'oh I know that already' but it really does help to have this as a reference when thinking about a multi language or culture website. Actually there are quite a few pointers that are great even if you're developing a site for just one language.

The book covers a range of audiences which is great - but some of the content doesn't become specific enough - want to have a definitive list of what browsers support unicode - check the index, there are 4 sections that have content on this but unfortunately not a single definitive reference.

It's a nice book to read - and for New Zealanders - we're not forgotten! Maori, and use of the Macron is mentioned, but not really discussed in great detail.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference-- but lacking some essential details.......2003-03-20

Overall, this book to be very thoughtful, insightful, and well-organized.

The book is a helpful introduction-- and probably invaluable to someone who wants to get into the business-- but some of the hands- on was a little lacking.

However, it's really not geared towards those of who are decision makers at larger companies-- for example, Yunker praises the infrastructure underlying Fedex.com, but fails to mention the company that designed the infrastructure--OnlineFocus. Additionally, the ESPN comments lack any reference to Starwave's global reach and how that may have helped them design ESPN for diverse audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for website globalization projects.......2003-01-30

This is a solid reference book which can assist people who are planning multilingual website design and development projects. The case studies will definitely provide readers with good information from firms who have already created global websites, and the Hands-On chapters will benefit those who want to experience first hand some of the language issues you encounter when creating a multilingual web presence. I am with a firm who provides website globalization services and found Yunker's book to do a great job summarizing the issues.

    5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2003-01-09

This is a fantastic book - a thoughtful and well written overview that has been needed for quite some time. I am very pleased to have it, and would recommend it to all types of people, both hands on practitioners, the curious, and to my recalcitrant clients who do not understand what about web globalization should cost money!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of math and details - does it make my life easier?.......2007-03-21

I don't know about this book. I has a CD with it, but I've bearly used it in 4 years. Some reviewers love it. It is definitely not fluff. Lots of math, and well written. BUT it's about OpenGL and a bit about Direct3D. BUT I've found gaming coding books which are much more readable, 10x more useful at the same price (see any of Andre' LeMothe's books.

4 out of 5 stars THE book for beginners.......2003-03-11

This is an exlenet book if u starting out with computer graphics. It takes you through the basic principles of CG and rasterezation of primitives and only than goes into 3d. But if you are looking for some cool GI and NURBS programming techniques this isn't the book for you. This book does it's job well

4 out of 5 stars Not so pretty, but lots of good content.......2003-02-01

This book is a great value -- it covers quite a bit of ground in a thin, relatively inexpensive book. While lacking the visual appeal and beautiful color foils of Foley and Van Dam's massive work, this book provides lots of valuable information.

5 out of 5 stars This book is awesome!.......2001-01-29

This is a great book. It is for beginners. It assumes some math background. And is discusses the fundamental concepts that apply to graphics development in a platform independent manner. However, there is a great implementation of a game engine (3dgpl) that supports multiple platforms, so you can see the concepts at work. I love it. After this book, I plan on reading a few more advanced books on game development, OpenGL and DirectX. This book is where to start.

5 out of 5 stars A hands on approach to learning Graphics Programming.......2000-12-06

A clean & simple look into the field of computer graphics, without the use of complex examples & arcane solutions. This book is by far the best I have read in the field of general graphics programming. The topics flow together in a logical manner that actually makes sense. The examples are applied solutions rather than the theological stuff you find in most other books. The straightforward style make it ideal to the beginner, yet it still contains lots of little tricks for the more advanced. A real gem.

3 out of 5 stars Great reference, but not inspiring at all!.......2006-08-11

I bought this book with another book in mind, Alias' book on their program Maya. That book is a project-based heap of tutorials on their software. And since this book is also written by the people behind the program, i thought it would be as inspiring, but i was proven wrong. Don't be put off by this though; if you want a thick book for reference of all the basic functions, go for it. If on the other hand you're easily put off by excessive technical details and just want to get your hands dirty ASAP (like me) you should consider another book. Regarding the lack of inspiration, i would like to inform you about the structure of things. The book doesn't really have you model a lot on your own, but rather refers to tutorial files on the cd and use them to explain basic functions. I can't say it too many times, the whole book should be based around an interesting project where each chapter introduces you to the basic functions while you actually feel like you're doing something useful, e.g. making a part of the project. A plus to the book though is that you are free to read/do the modules in any order you'd like, and the book is made for the ease of doing so.
