Book Description

Photoshop 7 Artistry is the book for serious professional photographers and digital artists who need to create expert imagery. This book will help you master the relationship between Photoshop tools and traditional photography. Photoshop Artistry is probably the most successful advanced-level Photoshop book available. It's initial appeal for photographers has been transcended; the basic principles the authors teach apply to all Photoshop users-particularly more-advanced users-and the advent of digital photography has further boosted the book's popularity. Covers creation and output of museum-quality art prints, images for high-end advertising, as well as GIFs, JPEGs, and Web Photo Galleries

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manual...!!.......2004-04-26

Excellent book on Photoshop. There are many books out there which spend to much time going over the obvious but this book differs from that in its approach. If you are a beginner I probably wouldnt recommend this book, but if you have some experience with Photoshoop you will find this book an excellent way to extend yourself. Easy to read and well layed out. The book has a quality feel and is full of useful information...Highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars Open the Door to the Potential of Photoshop.......2003-12-10

This is the best Photoshop book I have read. Its subtitle, "Mastering the Digital Image," says it all.

As one works through the step-by-step exercises and tutorials, the serious photographer begins to understand the complex relationship between the Photoshop tools.

Tutorials are explained in a simple and straightforward fashion. The explanations are grounded in reality, but offer a doorway to understanding the program's theoretical basis.

The book is not cheap, but it is a tremendous aid in unlocking Photoshop's potential.

3 out of 5 stars Seemed like a good book but..........2003-11-04

It's true. The book is packed with detailed information. But it's mostly the information that I do not care to know or already know. I guess I shouldn't have bought this book because I primarily wanted to know about color correction. So I read about color correction from this book, and I was surprised yet disappointed when not much info on how to write Curves were included. The methods of using Level to correct a picture are rather simple and for beginners only. The before and after pictures are not that big of a difference compared to other books I read.

5 out of 5 stars My Photoshop & photography bible ..........2003-05-17

This is a comprehensive guide to the use of Photoshop for the production of photo art. It covers clearly just about everything you need to know to turn your scanned or digital pictures into publishable images on paper. I've followed this series since Photoshop 5 Artistry and it continues to be an extremely valuable reference and tutorial for me. There's a lot of material here and it can be intimidating but I guarantee that you'll be an accomplished Photoshop user if you follow the advice and techniques from this book.

I would also recommend as a complementary book Scott Kelby's 'The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers'.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect For Digital Photographers.......2003-04-19

This book is amazing. It is written for and by a photographer. I've had the book for only a few days and I am already doing things that seemed complex in just a matter of moments. I can't express how happy I am with this book purchase. It was the perfect book for me and anyone else that wants to work with digital photographs.

    Book Description

The goal of this book is to focus on introductory modeling techniques used in finite element analysis, and illustrated thought the use of the Algor program. Many of the capabilities and limitations of finite element analysis will be addressed. This will hopefully help the reader to become a more responsible user of the finite element method. Unfortunately, some people believe that finite element analysis is just another add-on feature to a CAD program, and therefore does not require any additional expertise to use. As many experienced finite element users will testify, the most impressive finite element mesh does not produce accurate results, if other parameters (such as: boundary conditions, loads, or element type) are not correctly defined. Hopefully, after reading this book and working through the exercises, the reader will gain an introductory understanding of how to build finite element models that correctly represent the corresponding physical parts.

5 out of 5 stars Very Worthwhile but Do Not Start Digital Photography Here.......2003-01-09

This is a wonderful book for explaining the workings of all the amazing tools available with Photoshop Elements -- and a steal at the bargain Amazon price. (How well you get on with Dummies cutesyness is your business).
However, in general it does not give one an overall sense of what makes for good photography with good image-editing. (Exception: with the blur tool it does explain that this can be used to help increase attention to the foreground). You may not be able to see the wood for the trees if you start here.
As a starting point the best book I have found is Bill Corbett, A Simple Guide to Digital Photography, which covers both taking photos and some important uses of Photoshop (notably the key Levels stuff).
I am taking the liberty of posting this against both versions of the Photoshop Elements Dummies book.

4 out of 5 stars Photoshop Elements For Dummies.......2002-08-16

Overall a really good book for learning Photoshop Elements. I was ready to switch to a more user friendly program but this book helped me get started. I would've liked to have had more color examples but it still gave good information on many topics. I will read it again now that I have some basic knowledge to really get into the more complex options available with this program.

3 out of 5 stars A good book if you can stomach the cuteness.......2002-04-27

Deke and Galen have done a good job with this book but, egged on I'm sure by the "dummies" editors, they've made it almost nauseatingly cutsie-pie. A few important things are left out of the index: how to add a border or a caption to your print, for instance. If your stomach can stand the syrupy cuteness though it's a good tutorial and a pretty good reference work.

      5 out of 5 stars A really useful book --- for a change........2002-04-26

This book will simply get you started in Photoshop Elements. In fact, although I've been using the program for a while, I learned usable stuff immediately. It solved some mysteries for me quickly. I recommend it most highly.

5 out of 5 stars Not for Dummies!.......2002-04-09

This book is amazingly comprehensive-not really for Dummies at all. It starts out very simple, but quickly picks up to explain the program from every angle. But it's always really easy to understand, and fun to read. A great program, and a great book!

      5 out of 5 stars I learned SO much!.......2001-02-10

This book is wonderful for anyone who's ever been intimidated by Photoshop and all its tools. The author lays out everything in a style everyone can understand and he doesn't get too technical with his words, although he does present techinical information and words for those who want it. The best thing about this book is that he has an exercise to go along with almost everything he writes about, which enables the reader to sit at their own PC/Mac and use Photoshop while following along with the book. He also has a "put it all together" exercise at the end of the book so you can know how to put a lot of the tools you've learned about into use together to create great art, even for the "graphically challenged" such as myself.

      4 out of 5 stars an idiot's appreciation.......2000-08-30

Robert Stanley's book lives up to its title, in that he not only guides readers through Photoshop 5, but also provides some understanding of the basics of digital imaging, photography etc. There is even assistance in understanding some features of operating systems such as "Windows" which makes it a real boon to idiots/beginners.

What I loved about Stanley's book was that he doesn't just tell the idiot/reader how to perform a particular action, but he explains why (in terms that even an idiot like me could understand)

When I first encountered Photoshop 5 I was bamboozled by the jargon - e.g. "selections", "paths" and particularly "layers". Stanley takes his reader through each of these terms with clear explanations and practical examples. It is almost like having someone sitting by your elbow as you gradually develop your expertise in what initially seems like a daunting programme.

My only criticism of this book is that the graphics are a little small, and in black and white, which requires a bit of effort for those readers with less than perfect eyesight ! However at the price one can't complain.

I'd recommend this as both a good buy and a useful resource

5 out of 5 stars Have been intimidated by Photoshop until now.......2000-06-04

I've owned Photoshop 4 and 5 for awhile but have mainly avoided using it much because of the complexity of the program. I've settled for using a simpler paint program until reading this particular book which makes understanding Photoshop much easier for me. The author has a sense of humour and the contents are well laid out and explained clearly. This book isn't for the Photoshop pro but if you've been intimidated by Photoshop, like I have, this book is a good choice.

4 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Photoshop5.......2000-02-16

To most people, their first attempts to come to grips with PS5 is a bit like doing brain surgery in the dark. This book turns the lights on and has you flying around the PS5 interface like an old trooper. The book is funny and forgiving and, considering the enormity of PS5, very thorough. It does not cover all that PS5 is capable achieving then,I don't think that is possible in one volume anyway. This book is designed to get you started..the rest is up to your imagination. Highly recommended.

I congratualate Michael Ekedahl for the excellent work done in publishing this book through Course Technology. The Book also includes a CDROM 2000 pub date. The CD includes Transcender Certification Test Prep software.

To complete the chapters and the end of chapter excercise s in the book the accompanying CD has the data files needed. I would Follow the HELP FILES to copy them to your computer.

What I like most is the way the Chapers are arranged. Each chapter begins with a programming related problem that the reader would expect to come across in real world business, immediately followed by a demonstration of application necessary to slove the problem.

      2 out of 5 stars A bed time story.......2002-02-02

This book is definetly not useful for continuing to learn VB. I found it poorly written, boring, with various grammatical mistakes and vague examples that are not very practical.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but be aware that it is meant for a classroom.......2000-10-19

I purchased the book recently and enjoy the presentation of thematerial. One item to note, however, is that this book is meant for aclassroom environment. What this means is that there are samplequestions at the end of each chapter but SURPRISE no solutions. Thesolutions are contained in an instructors manual. This fact shouldhave been disclosed in the book's description so that I might havepurchased a diferent one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Format and Presentation.......2000-04-30

An excellent book, a must buy for those VB programmers trying to get out of the minor leagues. Congratulations Mr.Ekedahl.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the BEST ! Relevantly Advanced Topics........2000-03-14

I am Certified in VB 5.0 and am close to taking the VB 6.0 test. I have alot to learn, but this book is not for the beginner. I believe this book to be the best overall book for preparing for certification. I read the version 5 of this book and could not wait to read this one also. I will be teaching VB again in the Spring of 2000. I used the Diane Zak book from Course Technology for the Intro to VB. I would like to use this book also for the advanced class in VB. I can not say enough good about this book. With the right teacher, this book would be dynamite. I would like to get our college to switch to this book for the advance classes. I would start in chapter 1 and cover the entire book. I think there is enough material her for 2 quarters. I think that the topics are relevant and not just advanced. I can understand people who may not like this book. This book is not the easiest to read but I do not want an easy book. Number of pages read don't count on certification - only if you know the material. If you want an easier book to read, there are plenty. I recommend this book highly to anyone who will listen. This book also has a 'Teaching Tools' CD that is available from the publisher for an extra cost. This extra CD is pretty neat - it has ready made tests for students, tests that can be put on a network and administrated online, and teaching notes, over heads, and more. Great resource. Even if you are not going to teach, the instructor's notes are a great summary of the points you need to know for your certification. This book and extra CD is an awesome combination. Not for the faint of heart.

This book is easy reading. However, the author wrote this book on how he uses Photoshop. He doesn't go into certain details like dissolves. He suggests in the book to take out the swatch palette for it is useless. I found it useful and I'm sure others probably would too. Not a book to use to study for the ACE exam.

I received Photoshop with my scanner, and had no manual to refer to. This book is easy to read and allowed me to begin working with Photoshop quickly. However, you will need another reference if you want to achieve the any of the advanced effects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Starter Guide.......1999-01-28

This is an excellent guide to using advanced channel-processing techniques and other procedures in Adobe Photoshop. The writers assume that you're already familiar with this image editor, but that you want to learn how to use channels, alpha channels, and masks creatively and effectively in your work. ("Chops" is an acronym, created by the authors, for channel operations.) They also assume that most of your work focuses on creating composite images.

You learn how to use layers, Calculations, blue-screen and green-screen techniques, and paths to achieve various effects. Historical overviews help place each given topic in perspective. The guide discusses why and when you'd want to use each technique, providing a highly valuable real- world emphasis. Photoshop Channel Chops features Photoshop 4.0 for Macintosh in its screen shots and tips, but because the writers present a great deal of theory as they teach the technology, users of previous versions of the software and Windows can easily apply what they learn to their own projects.

      Book Description

Written by Photoshop gurus, David Biedny, Bert Monroy, and Nathan Moody, this must-have guide reveals the secrets of the true power behind the most popular image processing program-Photoshop. In no time, users will build a solid understanding of alpha channels, masks, layers, and compositing, and master the advanced features of Photoshop to create stunning digital effects.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you're serious about Photoshop.......2004-06-13

Wow! The authors really know their stuff! There is so much information in this book it's scary. This book is a must-read for anyone who takes Photoshop seriously. Sure, it was written years ago when Photoshop was at version 4, and sure the writing gets a bit corny at times, but it is still a "killer app" among Photoshop books.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Photoshop theory.......2002-12-10

If you aspire to be a hardcore Photoshop user, this book is probably the one you want above all others. It's not a step-by-step tutorial, a mere reference book, or a book that leads you through the tools and various functions of the software. Instead it discusses the fundamental concepts you need to know to use Photoshop to its fullest. Some statements in the book are outdated, but fortunately, they are usually statements of opinion and occur only in a few places. Most of the book is still applicable since Photoshop today still has channels, alpha channels, paths, layers, and calculations. This book hasn't been updated since it was written in 1998, but it really doesn't need to be. It's not about how to use particular tools and new features. It's about how to think with Photoshop. And it's deep enough to read over and over for reference. I would encourage even beginner Photoshop users to read this book if they are really committed, especially if they want to learn about compositing. By the end of this book, you'll be able to understand how Photoshop does what it does, and why it is such a powerful program.

      5 out of 5 stars No wizardry.......2002-12-09

I hate the books that only talk about particular special effects and how to achieve them, without telling you why it should be done that way. With Photoshop, you want to be in control. This book allows to be in control. It will explain exactly what's going on behind the scenes. After reading this book, I felt like being a Photoshop guru. It was nice.

I'm a student learning Photoshop and I must say this is one of the best Photoshop books I have ever come across. The authors explain every aspect in a detailed and engaging way. In other books, I may read a chapter and understand how to do something but I often ask why it's done that way. Photoshop Channel Chops gives thorough explanations on many different channel operation methods that makes sense and leaves me wanting to read

After 3 false starts with another book, Revit's built-in tutorial, and Autodesk's online tutorial (which I felt all were dead-ends), this book has been the answer to my prayers! Not only does the author know Revit very well, but he presents his lessons in a logical manner that keeps the reader's interest yet keeps it still challenging for the reader, continually expanding his envelope. The lessons are VERY clear, with many examples and graphics. I just wish I had this book a month ago!!! I am a registered architect new to CAD, having done it by hand for over 20 years....I was originally going with AutoCAD but got Revit at the urging of a structural engineer friend, and I am glad I did, especially after seeing what Revit can do versus AutoCAD!

I have a bunch of Photoshop books, and being a digital photographer, I did not find this book helpful at all for my interests. It is a great book for learning how to do artwork with Photoshop but has nothing about photographs. I wanted to write a review so that way the next person looking for a book on messing with your photographs, would not buy this book. I recommend The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby if you are looking for Photoshop methods to play with your pictures.

1 out of 5 stars Good Book, Bad CD.. You got idea but you can't do it!!.......2003-01-01

New Raiders have problem with Flash MX Magic and now there are some problem with Photoshop 7 Magic, too.

Photoshop 7 Magic also have CD problem, I can't open picture in Project1 Folder. So, I can't Follow the book. Further more, Most of all folder contain only Start File.. no psd, no finish file there are only TIF file without layer! oh dear Sherry London, I'm not professional like you but I need some PSD file to see each Layer because sometime I can't follow your instruction. (as I see, 3 folders have finish file.. it's a big mistake)

in page 47 of this book, Phill Williams say only use Retouching tool to move object in TIFF file to other place (this is like a photo retouching) but they give me only 2 picture in that page .. just only original image and finish image.. there are no clue to point me out where I have to rubber stamp nor start to clone! and it's very small .. I do not understand why they left space behind. Maybe this is a MAGIC! So, it's very hard to understand. I need more picture and bigger! I do not know why her left space away like this .. :(

Worst ever, NO FONT!! but in book say include in cd, (lier) .. and many many error i.e. wrong folder name (I read only 3 projects but I found 4 or 5 errors!! it's too much!) and wrong picture in project 4!! you can download fix file from newriders website but it doesn't help anything! because errata still have error itself!! oh no.

Only a few better left is good tech support! but it's useless because this book is .... ok, I can say only don't purchase this book until next edition of this title came out! or try by yourself :) or purchase Photoshop 7 Wow! book instead!

      3 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2002-10-24

A plethora of new books are arriving on bookshelves thanks to Adobe releasing version 7 of Photoshop, and Photoshop 7 Magic by Sherry London and Rhoda Grossman from New Riders is one of the latest.

I have been using Photoshop 7 for a few months now (and had used a beta version, Liquid Sky, for a few months before that) so I am pretty comfortable with the new version. I was hoping Photoshop 7 Magic would teach me something new, something I did not know I could do with the new version of the program. Alas, that is not what this book is about.

Starting off with some very simple ways to use text, layers, and transparencies, the book moves into many different categories of Photoshop, from Marbled Backgrounds to Satin Beveled Type. The book is broken out into three main segments, Artistic Techniques, Web Techniques, and Image Manipulation Techniques.

The book features some really nice artwork and the accompanying CD-ROM has all the files you need to re-create the projects done in the book.

The book is well written, if somewhat Spartan. There is no sense of who the people are writing the book. It is "I did this, then I did that, etc..." With all the white space in this book, I would have liked to see a little more of the personalities of the writers come through. As it is, it is a boring read. Photoshop 7 Magic is a textbook, not an entertaining read. With the great pictures and examples in this book, it could have been so much more. Perhaps Sherry and Rhoda should take a page from another New Rider writer, Scott Kelby, and liven their work up a bit.

This book is geared to new Photoshop users, or graphic designers just now making the switch from brush and canvas to mouse, stylus pen, and monitor. Experienced graphic artists who have been using Photoshop for a few years will get little from this book they do not already know, or have learned from the countless book already available on the subjects covered in this book. Add to that and the very hefty price tag of the book, a whopping forty-five bucks, and I cannot recommend this book unless you are really lacking in Photoshop skills, unlike the demographic this book seems to be catering to.

Average book at best. Nice paperstock and heft to the book, but price is way too much for the quality of the 275 pages of actual content. The only Magic here is watching [money] disappear from your wallet or purse.

5 out of 5 stars Five Big Ones!.......2002-08-06

With hundreds of choices out there for the category, this one stands out. Photoshop 7 Magic really enhances the possibilities of the tool. As a user, I want a text that's simple to read and NOT overwritten. Just show me how to do it! I'm a painter who found the chapter on brush techniques and liquid painting to be very helpful. You'll want this book on your shelf.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2002-08-01

It seems that most photoshop books simply recycle the same tutorials over and over again. NOT this one! Photoshop 7 magic takes a wonderful approach to not only going over the basics for beginners, but diving into some of the newest features such as the painting engine. The tutorials in the book are easy to follow and duplicate, yet are not long winded with and over abundance of info. I think they did a wonderful job with spreading out the abilities of photoshop without lingering one one feature too much. Whether you are new or a long time user, this is a book worth checking out!
