4 out of 5 stars Beginners Book.......2007-10-12

I have just begun to use this book. I am an extreme beginner and find the book attractively laid out and well-illustrated. I have not finished my web site yet, but I'm on my way. There are a few details that are "over my head" but I think I can work around them and still get good results.

5 out of 5 stars Just Follow the Easy Instructions.......2007-09-16

FrontPage was a new application to me and somewhat different than other web page applications. I was asked to take over website updates and didn't have time to go through a class, etc. This book enables the user to look up the task at hand and then basically follow the step-by-step instructions. It has been a fabulous tool. It is very user friendly for the novice but still has enough technical information to satisfy the HTML hound. I found it to be a more effective tool than Microsoft's on-line classes.

If you can only have one book on FrontPage, this should be it.

5 out of 5 stars New User.......2007-03-15

I am just learning about web page development and bought Microsoft FrontPage. I needed help understanding the program and bought this book. I find it very helpful. The layout of the book is most useful. I needed assistance with taking the first steps, and this book is serving my needs. It would probably be too basic for someone with web development experience.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the average user.......2007-03-15

Not a heavy duty reference book but excellent for the beginner. Clear, easy to follow instructions to get the site going. I found it to be more useful than the Que book-seemed to have the same info in a clearer format than the Que book (which is at least four times as large).

5 out of 5 stars nice setups.......2007-03-01

good book for learning how to do your website. step by step process is fairly easy

4 out of 5 stars A effective training tool for Excel tutors.......2007-05-25

This particular series of instructional books (meaning the "QuickSteps" series) has always been one of my favorites -- they're concisely written in short paragraphs with decent descriptive pictures to help anyone learn just about any type of software application.

While I found this book to be fairly complete, I'd still only recommend it as a desk-side reference manual to use along with Microsoft tutorials themselves. While it is a cleverly written book that is not as cumbersome to use as other reference books on the market, it does not address all of the finer points of Excel.

All in all, it's a great reference book, and let's face it, sometimes it's just easier to review a chapter a few times to digest material rather than stare at a computer screen until you become cross-eyed.

All in all, I'd probably give this book a 4.5, but since that's not an option, I'll have to stick with 4 stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Tool.......2005-06-21

I don't use Excel all the time. But when I do I don't have time to troubleshoot problems.

This hands-on, user friendly book has helped me conquer Excel. The text is readable and well organized. The visuals are clean and fully support the instructions.

I found that you can start from the beginning and teach yourself EXCEL with simple step by step instructions or you can flip straight to your topic of interest and further build your skills. This is a great tool for all levels of expertise.

5 out of 5 stars Review From A Psychology Student.......2005-05-17

I'm a soon-to-be-graduating Psychology student at the University of Washington and I am writing this review from the perspective of some one using excel in Social Sciences.

I found this book extremely suited to my needs...each step was very clear and precise and it was easy to find the chapter or section that was most applicable to what I was working on.

It covered all of the functions of Excel that I have used in my classes thus far. Although my intro. classes had a very brief introduction to the functions I needed, as I progressed into higher level classes and used more and more Excel I found that I needed additional specific instructions for my work. This book was very helpful in that way, and saved me the bother of forever emailing questions to my professor, as I had done before I received the book.

I actually used Excel the most to analyze the significance of data from an experiment that I had designed and to graph the results. This required quite a few steps and it was helpful to have a guide to look at as I went as opposed to trying to guess what came after the basic skills I had previously learned.

I also lent this book to a friend who works in American Ethnic Studies and used Excel to organize and make tables of data for her thesis. The American Ethnic Studies major has no background in science, so was in the position of having absolutely zero knowledge of Excel. However, with this book alone, she was able to complete the Excel portion of there thesis without any additional help.

From a student's point of view, this is a great resource if your field involves any use of Excel.

5 out of 5 stars Great quick reference.......2005-02-02

I am an infrequent Excel user, so I needed a good reference book that is well indexed. That's exactly what I got with Excel 2003 QuickSteps. It's easy to find what I need when I want it. It's very well illustrated and contains a lot of great tips. The author does an excellent job of explaining the material.

5 out of 5 stars Great for my users.......2004-09-09

I manage a medium-sized network and support a large number of fairly savvy users. That is, most users know how to do their specific tasks very well and are willing to learn new things. But they are not willing to sit down with a book full of dense text. This is where the "Quick Steps" books come in handy. I keep a number of these books on hand and when a user requests assistance, I give them one of the books with the appropriate page bookmarked. Steps are outlined in full color with lots of pictures and pointers and tips. Additional information is set off in side boxes so users can learn more if they choose. What I have found is that once a user completes a task successfully, they get fairly excited about the experience and browse the book to learn more. The books really stimulate users to experiment with things they would not normally bother to learn. And that is where this book excels. It is a "browser." Users don't feel like they need to start at the beginning and read through to the end. I get lots of grumbles when I ask for the book back so I can pass it on to others.

This book is also great for new users. I tell them to spend a few hours working through the steps, which are easy to follow and can be done at a fairly fast pace. Most users think the full color layout is fun to work through. The down-side is that like any book, space is limited, especially with the fully-illustrated format, so you're obviously not going to find everything in these books, but I do feel they contain a good balance of material and are appropriate for corporate libraries.

Marty (the concept author for the Quick Steps series) and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that they have helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

4 out of 5 stars 3/08/06 Review of Access Quick Steps documentation.......2007-03-09

I am very proficent at Excel and thought that Access would be somewhat similar. I was wrong, Access is proving to be a difficult learn for me. I have learned enough to know that Access is a better way but I am still struggling. I bought Video Professor CD and it was adequate but lacks the reference material that an average learner like myself needs. This book has helped me tremendously! I am currently on Chapter 5 (of 10) and it is beginning to come together. The book, I believe, is for beginners but will handle most issues right up to intermediate needs.

2 out of 5 stars Not Much Depth.......2007-03-08

While Quicksteps covers the basics, I found it shallow, not well organized and a very weak index. If you are starting a database from scratch, it will work you through it, but it was not much help where I wanted to convert several databses to Access. Inexpensive, but worth it.

3 out of 5 stars it is too basic.......2007-02-20

there is nothing wrong with this book as a real introductory book for Access at such low price, but I guess anyone who want to buy an Access book need sth more in depth. I would personally recommend Access for Dummies, which is the second book I bought for self-study.

This book is especially written for those with some knowledge of computers, but not enough to be able to use Windows to its full potential. This is an excellent handbook which will answer most questions for the layman. I found it more useful than the XP for Dummies.

Marty and I are fellow writers and that is how I learned about these books. I must say that it has helped my users enormously and relieved my support task. Hey, it's the 21st century. Anyone working in an office should know how to work with operating systems and common applications. Most people can do that if they have easily accessible references and refresher material like these books. Thanks to Marty for developing the "Quick Steps" concept and to McGraw-Hill for publishing this series.

Book is written in simple language and in an easy-to-follow format. Excellent diagrams. Very good instructional book for beginners and a good reference for those of us who need a refresher course in Outlook.

2 out of 5 stars A picture book, with little information.......2005-06-25

This "QuickSteps" book is largely a picture book: lots of nice, color screen shots of various parts of the Outlook interface, with sketchy text captions pointing to various things to tell you what they are and do.

There's not a single scrap of information in this book that you can't find from doing a quick search in Outlook's own online help. And because of "QuickSteps" relatively thin size (compared to most software manuals), it gives you only the most superficial introduction to the topics it covers.

My advice is to skip this book -- even at the "amazing low price!" as it claims right on the cover -- and use the Outlook online help and tutorials. Then if you still need more information, get one of the real books.

5 out of 5 stars Finally common sense in tech!.......2004-12-04

I am a real estate agent, looking for the best way to manage contacts. I have Outlook but didn't have a clue how to go about integrating everything without reading a 1000 page book. I thought about Act! but had very mixed reviews on it. So I searched for a book that would quickly get me up and running in Outlook, and therefore would quickly tell me if the software I already have is powerful enough to do the job I need yet easy enough to let me spend my time on my real job -- not learning more software. This book does both; and the quality of the paper and color made it a pleasure to read. I got my answer -- yes, Outlook can do the job quickly and easily, freeing my time to sell real estate.

3 out of 5 stars This Adobe crumbles............2006-12-12

Was looking for a "quick step" booklet to gather some tips on the versatile Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and this isn't quite it. I am a layperson for most computer technology. This book repeats processes that are already onscreen instructions and obvious to even the most basic user. This causes information overload and muddles and obscures any truly useful "tips" that are for intermediate users that might help you in the business world. I used a yellow highlighter on sections that were helpful or insightful. I found that I could condense the points onto a 3x5 card for easier reference. This book should be renamed Adobe Basics, or simplified to "play with the toolbars on Adobe". The zoom key means this...etc, the whole page key means this.... I will still search for a business person's pratical application guide to Adobe. I love their product, I would just quick-step over this one.
