3 out of 5 stars Not all "Northwest Coast".......2006-12-27

Great, yet another book about "Northwest Coast" and "Coast Salish" art that ignores the art of the Salish Indians of Western Washington. Ever since J. E. Standley flooded the Seattle tourist market with the fake Kwakiutle artwork, fake totem poles, and other hybrids of art forms from the northern coast Salish tribes, the art forms that are indigenous to our tribes here in western Washington have been all but forgotten, brushed aside by authors who chase the market with books that pretend to deal with all "of the Northwest Coast" but in reality ignore anything south of the 49th Parallel.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Informational.......2006-10-10

Interesting and well written, this book has been not only a wonderful source of entertainment but a good reference for this native art style. Every image is a beautiful example of the style, and covers several medias (print, paint, clothing and carving). Stewart spends time covering all the basics, from the rudimentary design principles, to the myths and symbolism of the many animals and figures represented by the examples. Differences between tribal styles are also covered, each group accompanied by several wonderful examples of the art. This book is a great starting place for anyone wanting to study this art form, whether it be primarily cultural or artistic.

5 out of 5 stars Encyclopedia of Haida.......2006-03-16

This is a great book if you are looking for explanations of the history of the Haida artwork and drawings. It also includes many examples of the artwork and is easy to read and understand for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars What I needed.......2004-12-25

Great pictures, explainations, and examples, Put in wonderful catagories and easy to understand!! Fully recommend!! I wish there was more of it as it is so well thought out!!

5 out of 5 stars Great details and good reading..........2001-08-02

Through well-detailed photographs and drawings, this book provides a nice introduction to Northwest tribal art. It uses examples of two- and three-dimensional works of art to explain the meanings and symbolism behind the animal motifs. You will quickly learn to recognize the ovoid, and S and U shapes that are characteristic to the art form. It also explains stylistic differences between the different cultural groups. I used this book on a trip through the Northwest and it really enriched my experience.

Book Description

One of Abbeville's most spectacular achievements, representing the highest standards in fine art printing, now available at a more economical price.

This marvelous edition of Audubon's Birds of America displays all 435 of Audubon's brilliant handcolored engravings in exquisite reproductions taken from the original plates of the Audubon Society's archival copy of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the magnificent illustrations in Audubon's masterpiece, nothing equals the level of fidelity or scale achieved in this high-quality edition.

Completely reorganized and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson, who was America's best-known ornithologist, and issued with the full endorsement and cooperation of the Audubon Society, this volume is the first to rearrange the plates in a more scientific order. Peterson's fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of Audubon's notable predecessors and disciples, including Peterson's own justly famous paintings.

This new systematic arrangement of the prints, complete with informative commentaries about each bird, made it possible to correct many of the problems or errors in Audubon's original edition that later scholarship revealed.

Other Details: 428 full-color illustrations, 435 duotones.

3 out of 5 stars A Good Companion.......2007-07-14

Having recently read the biography of Audubon, I was very interested in seeing the actual drawings. The book I read had a few of them in black and white, but I wanted to see a larger sample in color. I decided to see if Amazon had anything and was very surprised to see that they offered all of the original drawings in color for a very small price. I realized the book would be smaller than the original life size drawings, but was a little surprised to find that the book was so small. That is my main problem with the book. Otherwise - WOW. To see these birds in all their glory in full color is just breathtaking. Furthermore, when you consider the original size, to have shrunk them down and still maintain the detail and the beauty is quite impressive. One can appreciate the drawings without having read about Audobon's struggle to create and then publish them, but I would suggest this book as a companion to a good biography of Audobon. Once you have both, his accomplishment can be fully appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-08-02

This book is spectacular. The images are breathtaking, and the quality of their presentation is nothing short of superb. Wow!!!

4 out of 5 stars Why reorganize a symphony?.......2004-11-30

Let me qualify my remarks by first saying that I have not even seen this version. I have no doubt that the printing is of the highest quality, but I have a serious reservation about the organization of this book. Audubon deliberately mixed his birds in a non-taxonomic order to maintain a freshness and an element of suprise. I recently acquired a large format copy published by Welcome Rain, which follows Audubon's original order. The effect is a delightful romp through nature, full of suprises, drama and movement. He never intended it to be a catalog with all his ducks in a row, it was to be an experience. I have seen an abridged, small format edition of his paintings arranged in the standard, dull taxonomic order of a typical field guide and the effect is nothing like seeing them in the order Audubon intended. Rearranging the plates for convenience of listers diminishes this work, and to a certain extent, is a disservice to the artist. While I am happy to see that his work remains in print and is being reproduced at very high standards, I would hope that it would be viewed as a symphony, not as a random collection of notes needing to be organized alphabetically.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful volume of audubon.......2004-07-16

If you are a birder and you collect all the great bird books, your collection is not complete until you get this. A beautiful book, contained in a hard case, with excellent printing. A steal at $250 at its original price, now knocked down between $125 to $185. Get this book! A great tribute to Peterson and Audubon.

Book Description

Rockwell Kent is one of America's most famous graphic artists. He was also an avid traveler. Kent was especially fascinated by remote Arctic lands and often stayed for extended periods of time to paint, write, and become acquainted with the local inhabitants. Between 1918 and 1935, he wrote and illustrated several popular books about his travels. Voyaging, originally published in 1924, is the engaging story of Kent's sailing voyage to Tierra del Fuego. Kent is a charming writer and keen observer of both the land and its people. The book is beautifully and generously illustrated with Kent's distinctive woodcuts.

The first edition was published to great critical acclaim. New Republic wrote, "the land lives. A land where roses are as big as sun-flowers, where gales gnaw against bleak cliffs . . . At the end of the earth, there is the paradox of the dwarf and the giant." The Nation said, "Kent has caught the wild beauty of this ominous region -- iron crags ringed with the froth of blown surf, wind-tortured trees, distant peaks incrusted with dazzling snow; but out of the very heart of this bewildering beauty emanates a sense of unseen presences appallingly, implacably hostile to man."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Adventure; Thrilling Moments!.......2000-04-11

Armchair adventurers who love sailing, roughing it through forests, bogs and mountains in strange lands, and meeting new people in brief encounters will love "Voyaging," by Rockwell Kent. The book begins with a shocking confession in the Introduction, and carries the reader through 184 pages of high excitement and magnificent descriptions of one of the most desolate and forsaken places in the world -- the area about Tierra del Fuego at the southern tip of South America.

The book's main characters are (1) Kent, about 40; (2) his mate, a Norwegian of 26 years who started his life by shipping to sea under his father when 14, who after a few months of beatings jumped ship, cursing as he went, apparently never to see his father again; (3) a lifeboat, which Kent bought for $20 and named Kathleen, and with a group of tradesmen modified to include cabin, mast and rigging for sails; (4) the West Wind, which whistled ceaselessly and tossed the little boat about dangerously, and (5) a menagerie of people along the way who extended hospitality, most with loving kindness, a few with malice.

A touching moment came on Bailey Island when Kent asked 20-year-old Margarita García, the name of her three-month-old suckling daughter. The baby has no name because she has not been baptized, Margarita replied. There in that inhospitable land Kent converted a dirty hovel into a cathedral and "baptized" the child, giving her his wife's name Kathleen Kent García. Kent writes that Father García, a murderer who earlier was released from a nearby prison after serving time, said "the ceremony had pleased him particularly as it was in truth the baptism of his child."

Characteristically, Kent illustrates the book well with black-and-white drawings of the stark landscape, and a few portraits of his new acquaintances. He also includes several maps by which the reader may follow the men's attempt to sail around Cape Horn -- an adventure that did not always go according to plan, as the reader will discover. -- Allen Long, Arlington, VA.

Book Description

Since shortly after the end of the Civil War, genuine Confederate paper money has been the subject of much research. While a number of publications are available today that describe and catalog the genuine currency, the availability of published information on its counterfeit counterpart is limited. What is available is somewhat incomplete, inaccurate and general in scope. This work is specifically concerned with the counterfeit currency that was produced and passed with genuine Confederate paper money during the Civil War years.

The first part of the book is an historical narrative that discusses the events and people involved in the production and passing of counterfeit currency, and the countermeasures of the Confederate Treasury Department to protect its already weak medium of exchange from losing even more value.

The second part of the book is an illustrated catalog that presents descriptions of all known examples of counterfeit Confederate currency. Over 180 illustrations are included and show most of the counterfeit notes. The appendix provides a brief, nontechnical explanation of the printing processes—relief printing, intaglio printing, and lithography—used in the mid-nineteenth century to manufacture counterfeit currency.

As a collector and student of Confederate currency, the availability of information on the contemporary counterfeit versions of the genuine currency was clearly lacking. This book provides a very helpful background and catalog. It fills in many of the blanks on the subject.

Book Description

As new towns and cities spread across the American frontier in the nineteenth century, itinerant artists soon followed, documenting these growing urban centers by drawing aerial perspectives, also known as bird's eye views. Commissioned by land speculators, local businesses, civic organizations, and individual citizens, these renderings fostered both civic pride and local commerce. The use of color lithography, a recent invention popularized by such prominent publishers as Currier & Ives, allowed the inexpensive reproduction of the highest-quality drawings, so that a bird's eye view was within the financial budget of even the smallest towns. These extraordinarily detailed lithographs eventually numbered in the thousands and now serve as a rich pictorial record of North America as it stood a century ago.
This sequel to our highly acclaimed title An Atlas of Rare City Maps collects over 100 views dating between 1835 and 1902, showing the streets, buildings, churches, bridges, waterways, and surrounding countryside of North American towns, ranging from burgeoning metropolitan centers to small logging towns and mining camps. Baltimore, Brooklyn, Denver, Indianapolis, Memphis, Montreal, New Orleans, Pittsburgh, Seattle, Syracuse, and Washington are just a few of the cities presented in this collection. The exquisite color and fine detail of these bird's eye views have been reproduced in all their original glory; also included is an introduction by John W. Reps providing a background on the artistic process and on urban development in the nineteenth century.

This is a book of graphics. In fact, I would use it as a coffee table book if it were not so precious to me.

It is an archive of drawn, etched and printed aerial perspectives.

It is great for design and compositional predecence in both urban and small town planning. If you are designing a small town and you wish for it to grow, this book would be an useful reference, as it graphically depicts the beginnings of many major U.S. cities.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Beaded Work.......2006-10-29

If you love American Indian beadwork, here's a good book for you. There are chapters on the history of beadwork in America, researching native American beadwork and collecting it.
Other chapters cover lane-stitch beadwork, loom beadwork, applique beadwork, gourd stitch and Comanche brick stitch, uncommon beadwork techniques, beaded edgings and finishing techniques, and patterns. He actually shows how to make different looms (tension loom, box loom, and heddle loom).
I can't vouch for the patterns and ease of following the directions, as my interest was in the historic beadwork. Simply beautiful!
There's a chapter on tools, materials and buying beads.
The color photos show projects and also antique beaded pieces from museums and collections.

4 out of 5 stars I recommend the library first..........2004-07-05

When possible, I take a book out of the library before I buy it. Hey, 3-6 weeks of free review, can't beat that. Anyway, I would recommend getting this book, but at a discounted price (from here or another online source). If you are like me and do beading as a craft, I personally I found some of the photos and diagrams quite helpful, but some of the instructions and other diagrams were a little hard to follow. If nothing else, you can get design ideas from it! I would rate parts of the text as moderately helpful, depending on your interest level.

1 out of 5 stars Best book???? ... Not this one!.......2003-02-04

OK, another nice book with nice illustrations, and nice instructions. But to be honest, I was sorry for the money I had wasted on a book that I had hoped to complement "Native American Beadwork: Traditional Beading Techniques for the Modern-Day Beadworker" by Georg J. Barth which has been around for almost ten years now (Stevens Point, WI: Schneider Publishers 1993, available through Amazon.com). David Dean's book, however, doesn't add substantially to my knowledge of Native American beading; a lot of cultural or tribal attribution of the objects shown is wrong though anyone only superficially familiar with tribal styles could make a better guess!

Barth's book is a much better source of information if you really want to learn how to bead in the Native American tradition; it's become a classic and has been quoted in the latest volume on Plains Indians of the Smithsonian "Handbook of North American Indians."

        Book Description

During the American Civil War, popular prints were frequently used to depict, define, and celebrate both the Union and Confederate causes. The Union Image explores the graphic arts that portrayed the Northern side—both in patriotic pictures and newsworthy illustrations published while the war raged and in retrospective images issued years later as major weapons in the postwar battle to shape the national memory.

Created not for connoisseurs but for ordinary Americans, these engravings and lithographs depicted battles, commanders, life in camp and on campaign, the sacrifices of home and hearth, and an election campaign that roiled the North in the midst of the war. This volume reproduces nearly 150 original prints, allowing readers to trace changes in Northern public opinion, from Northerners' early high hopes for success to their appreciation for the ultimate victors, the "real men of war," Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Look at Currier.......2001-02-01

This is apparently a condensation of and paperback release of a book published by the same author and press in 1979. The original is one of the most mind-boggling and gorgeous books ever published in the United States of America. I'm not overstating the case.

A limited edition of 1500 hand numbered volumes were published in mission leather by Abbeville Press with gold stenciling on the huge spine and a four color lithograph embossed on the high quality leather cover! Wow! At what seems like 8 or 9 pounds it's enormous. The paper quality and print reproduction are of the highest order. And the large number of lithos, especially in color, make this a must have for anyone interested in lithography. The Peters collection, from which this was drawn (with assistance from the Museum of New York), is the finest collection of Currier and Ives in the world.

The insights are excellent and provide interesting background on some of Curriers artists and competitors. Currier's work itself gives a terrific peek at 19th century America... The vast majority of the leather edition must be in archival collections by now.
