Book Description
Idea Index kick-started a revolution in graphic design books, unique in size, feel--and most important--wealth of ideas. Layout Index is the next step, a compendium of layout idea-generators that will help designers explore multiple possibilities for visual treatments each time they turn the page. The visual and textual suggestions are divided into eight major areas, including newsletters, flyers, posters, brochures, advertising, stationery, page layout, and Web pages.
Each of these examples are designed to inspire effective solutions in the viewer's mind, rather than simply give specific answers to design problems. The tone and temperament of the design problems, as well as their solutions, vary from traditional to cutting-edge, from corporate to crazy. Designers will learn to solve their design problems, produce fantastic work and become better, more creative thinkers.
* Both creativity books and layout books are extremely popular
* As proven by Idea Index, the format of this book is a proven winner with designers
Customer Reviews:
great for students, good for old hands, priceless for adhoc designers.......2007-01-04
The whole "index" series is good for jump starting when in a stuck place. For average students it can really be helpful to get them to seek/create more variety in their work. For marketing or PR individuals or students it is a must have. Many individuals may have a cursory introduction to design and yet find themselves having to create layouts and design. The Index Books are a lifesaver.
Sad leftovers from the dark ages..........2006-10-14
This book is at first appearance, visually interesting and consuming. But upon closer look (as in opening it) it's not worth the time, money or breath sadly. The concepts and ideas within this book can be inspiring to thoses who have the time and energy, but overall this book is just a display of bad, kitsch design. My advice? Don't bother.
Not overly sophisticated.......2005-09-06
I bought this along with the Color Index, and I must admit I'm not overly impressed with the ideas in this text.
I will keep it onboard because you -never- know what might spark your creativity, and I must admit there are a few good ideas to jump off from in this book. I donno, I guess I just feel underminded when I flip through this book. It is a bit too kitchy for me (think clip-art-like graphics), and many of the solutions presented in it are too busy and hardly professional.
i use a lot.......2004-12-09
for those who aren't experienced in the in's and out's of page layout and design, this book is a lifesaver. it really gets your creative juices flowing by simply giving you a full range of possible ideas for how you can change up your design. i found it much more useful than the idea book, which didn't really help me with the visual expression part. if you have a concept and you simply want to consider all the possibilities for how you can express it on a page, i recommend getting this book!
A simple, helpful guide.......2004-07-09
Design inspired by this little book leans towards clean & well ordered displays of information. This book provides basics of page building & information distribution.
Beginners will like this book, however, those looking for more complex layout ideas should either work on the existing ideas taking them to the next levels, or peruse other books.

Best Real-World Examples.......2006-10-15
I blame Amazon for this horrible problem I have with buying gillions of design books...most are good references but not really day-2-day tools and inspiration...in my lastest order, got this book and RIGHT AWAY I was stoked with the samples and the dogma presented. YIPPEE!
Nice but..........2006-06-27
As with other books by Samara (e.g. Typography Workbook), this one is filled with beautiful and relevant examples. My only gripe would be that... the type used for the main text is too light and hard to read! - which kind of contradicts the subject? :-/
Needs a Glossary.......2006-06-17
As an introduction to publication design the book is good.
The only criticism I have is that there is no glossary or even an index. There are some places in the book where a term is introduced before it's been described so at times I was wondering if I'd missed something. The term is eventually described, usually a couple of paragraphs or sometimes pages later, so if you're not reading the book from beginning to end it can be difficult to find the place where a term is described.
The book does not offer an exhaustive treatment of design principles and I will buy other books to learn more, but it's been a helpful introduction.
REVIEW.......2006-03-21
This book is great. I'm not even finshed with it yet and already I've learned a lot. It's full of usefull tips that I never learned in school. It is a wlecome contrast to the many industry books that show you lot of examples but no explanations for the principles behind the design. I would highly recommend this book.

Customer Reviews:
Great on financials, Lacking on creativity........2002-06-02
I was amazed how informative this book is when it comes to getting the business started financially and how to devise a marketing plan, find employees and contractors, and build a readership. However, the book really gives no information on the creative aspect of the business, such as how to pick a layout scheme or weed out useless content. I feel more confident on the business side now, but am still lost as far as building the magazine itself.
Starting and Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine.......2002-04-28
Woodard does an excellent job of explaining the financial aspects of magazine publishing. She also gives the reader many ideas on targeting an audience and advertisers. However, the book may fall a little short on creativity, such as how to color outside the lines in finding new ways to sell subscriptions and gain advertisers. Direct mailing and newstands can only go so far. Overall, the book allows the reader to get a good handle on the basics of starting a magazine.
best of the bunch.......2001-10-06
I read three books like this one before starting my magazine. This one was definitely the most complete and understandable. She doesn't cover prining, computers or production technology. And she doesn't talk about writing or editing. But she does a great job showing you how to get subscribers, sell ads, raise startup money, and hire good people. If you want to start a magazine, forget the other books and read this one.
Disappointed.......2001-08-20
Admittedly, I was disappointed when I sifted through the pages to find that many subjects listed in the content pages had been barely discussed in depth. Although this is a book about the business of publishing it fails to cover adequately the subject of editorial schedules and disseminating information. The layout makes it difficult (I found) to take in the information and use it to your benefit. There are very little illustrations or visual examples of layouts to guide the inexperienced publisher. Much of the information is written in a general nature and is basically just common sense. I found myself, after reading a few chapters, asking many questions and the answers, I'm afraid, are not in this book. As someone new to the publishing business I was looking for something that I could use as a reliable guide taking me through the process step by step. Alas, this book did not meet my needs.
Solid book.......2001-02-13
Don't let the raw art of the cover deceive you: this is a very good book. It complements Samir Husni's Launch your Magazine, with solid information on the commercial side of a magazine: how to study your market before you launch that dream magazine, what circulation is (and how to target for your audience), how to estimate your fixed and variable publishing costs (and how to balance them with your estimated revenues so as to break-even and then make a profit), and lots of other details. There are a few obvious pieces of info, but I read it twice, and marvelled at the insights and expertise which Cheryl Woodard offers us for a bargain price. Now I guess I'll read it a third time.

Not very useful.......2006-06-13
I did not find this book to be very useful. For one thing, it seems to assume that if you're going to publish a magaine you had better have a lot of money. I didn't have a lot of money, so this book started out by making me feel like I ought to throw my idea away. Second, it has a lot of information about management (how to make business decisions, budgeting, strategy, subscribers are a leaking bucket, blah blah) but I was already past that. I just wanted to know how to get started. Nothing truly practical here. If you're just thinking about starting a magazine, this book gives a decent overview of how to think about and plan your idea. If you're already in the process of putting together your magazine, you need something different. I recommend "How Not to Start a Magazine" by B. Ann Bell.
Great Guide.......2006-06-10
I recommend this book to an individual with no prior magazine publishing experience or know-how.
Who is this Patrick Brady?.......2006-05-06
I read this book and I can see that most other reviewers agree with me that the book's pretty good. It's not perfect, but what is? Reviewer Patrick Brady panned the book, however. I'd like to know Patrick Brady's credentials. He says he's published a magazine. Which magazine? Is it on newsstands?
Best of the bunch.......2005-03-02
I read all the books about starting magazines for a school project and I think Woodard's book is the best. It covers things overlooked by books about design or editing or production - like how to set competitive ad prices, or how to sell subscriptions without a lot of money. And because this one is updated regularly, its very current, including how to integrate a website with a print magazine. Full of practical suggestions from real publishers, and links to a mass of resources, this book may be the only one you need.
Falls Woefully Short.......2005-01-14
Starting a magazine, as I have done, requires more than just an editorial plan. Woodard's book does a nice job of establishing what needs to go into an editorial plan but it completely ignores production issues, printing, advertising and funding. It's a little like telling someone how to design a car without mentioning that in addition to nice upholstery and great body work it needs an engine and tires. Put another way, she only talks about the part of the iceberg you can see.
Customer Reviews:
A must have for a newsletter specialist!.......1999-12-18
In all the books I have on newsletter design, this has been the most beneficial! It offers many great examples in full color stating what each design has to offer. It has lots of tips and addresses each part that goes into newsletters from nameplates to the mailing panel. I wish they would come out with a new one!
Great for Designing Newsletter Style Websites!.......1998-08-02
Good design and layout is important for the success of any Website. Websites are created to share information of one sort or another and do not follow any one design pattern. One popular design format for sharing information online that we should be familiar with is the newsletter style that is intended to communicate information in similar fashion as the common newsletters we get in the mail. Most news reporting Websites use this same format. Mark Beach and Elaine Floyd have written Newsletter Sourcebook to offer readers plenty of sample layouts and creative newsletter design assistance.
The book measures 8 1/2" by 11" and contains many full-colored examples of newsletter layouts and design tips. Many of the samples can be easily adapted for Website design purposes. Although this book is not intended to deal entirely with Website design principles, the placement of graphic images, the effective use of colors, the creative use of columns, the struc! ture of text, and font selection can assist Website designers to produce top-notch newsletter Websites. A number of Website screen shots are provided to display the impact made by online newsletters.
With a little re-working this book could easily pass for a Website design handbook. The advantages of using this book are crystal clear. The authors have been in the newsletter business for many years. This book is proof of it. Their experience is demonstrated by the detailed work exhibited throughout. Anyone can achieve similar results. Additionally, when time is short the Website designer can quickly thumb through this book for easy ideas to put to use. All that is necessary is basic knowledge of HTML programming and/or the use of good Website design software programs.
Begin creating newsworthy Websites, newsletters, and other forms of promotional literature for yourself and for others with this great resource book today. This is a must-have book!

How to start and produce a magazine or news letter.......2005-08-16
This book has a lot of useful information.
Outdated and not very informative.......2003-06-11
I was hoping to learn things I hadn't seen in other books, but I didn't. Not only is the book outdated, but it's also quite limited in what it offers. I was not happy with it at all.
Most Improved Book - so improved I bought this edition myself!.......2003-02-06
The 4th edition was written in part to address my comments of disappointment I felt after plunking down my hard-earned funds for edition 3.
Many people believe that we consumers at the grassroots can do little or nothing to lead business and politicians to the 'promised land.'
Well, folks, this is the 21st Century and the times are changing! Smart business people, publishers and writers are wise enough to understand that we will not settle for mediocrity. Gordon Woolf and Worsley Press are truly savvy.
After you read the rest of this review you should buy the book if you are a novice or if you have only a smattering of knowledge about putting together a newsletter or magazine. He has good companion books for people using Pagemaker (my choice for publishing) or In Design. Both books are excellent and I encourage you to buy them without reservation.
Also visit worsleypress.com and, as soon as we get our web site up and running send us your books, magazines and newsletters for review by us at surfreviewandreport.com. We'll be fair to publishers who provide useful content to consumers. So, please make your publication the best it can be so we can help you sell lots of copies at a reasonable profit.
Now, order this 4th edition of Woolf's How To Start And Produce A Magazine Or Newsletter. Then get cracking with your first newsletter!
For more experienced newsletter and magazine or aspiring newspaper publishers I rated Starting And Running A Successful Newsletter or Magazine to be a 5 star; How To Start A Magazine a 4 Star, and How To Produce A Small Newspaper to be a 5 Star [although this last one is out of print].
One final comment. Worsley Press has a terrific web site that provides a lot of advice and tips. The templates provided are of great value to anyone wanting to start their own newsletter or magazine - Bill Anderson surfreviewandreport.com.
Get both books.......2002-12-17
"Still inspired" is almost right with his review. If you are seeking a book by someone who has worked at the big end of town (discussing finance etc) then Cheryl Woodward has written the book (Starting & Running a Successful Newsletter or Magazine) you should buy. Gordon Woolf's book is much more the book for the ordinary person who wants to start a local publication or is asked to start or take over a club magazine or company newsletter. I found especially useful the free advertisement rate calculation spreadsheet you can now download from the book's website (there's a password inside the back cover)-- that was worth the price of the book on its own. But for most people the answer is to buy both books. Each covers things the other doesn't. Both authors know their stuff.
Something's Missing.......2002-10-08
I have to say I was disappointed after reading this book. I think it is a useful tool for learning the technical terms associated with publishing. However, I needed a little more information regarding the dos and donts. Cheryl Ann Woodard's book has all the nuts and bolts. I couldn't put it down.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible!!!!!!.......2007-01-15
Hear, hear to David M. Chess. Your review was right on the money. In addition to his comments, I was horrified at the minute size and choice of the overall text and captions used to design this book. It's very tedious to read. And....the constant references to rag right (or rag left) that are incorrect show me that the author is not typographically savy.
For all of you beginner designers who have the unfortunate experience of trying to read this book-"rag or ragged right" is just that, ragged on the "right" side of the copy which is also referred to as left aligned, and visa versa. Ragged left=Right aligned.
Also, the concept of including working exercises is a great idea, but... assigning an excercise and showing an "exact" sample of the various results does not encourage the reader to experiment further.
This book is uninspiring to say the least, and will not be taking a position on my graphic design bookshelf any time soon. I'm happy to say that with my college training, I can tell a good design book from a bad design book. Beware!
Bad Bad Book.......2006-10-11
This is a patheticly designed design book by David Dabner that shamefully claims is "based on the best selling edition by Alan Swann" NOT co-authored by Alan Swann as the Amazon listing claims. The original book by the same title, actually written by Alan Swann and was Published by North Light Books in 1987 and paperback 1990 is the bible for understanding graphic design! Nothing short of brilliant! Do NOT buy Dabner's book when you can buy the original by Swann
Less than useful continued... (tip of the hat to David Chess).......2006-08-16
This book disappoints in many ways. There are other books available on the topic of graphic design that are far more helpful, such as Robin Williams' "The Non-Designer's Design Book".
The most logical place to start with a book on graphic design is with an introduction to the elements of design before then speaking of the principles of design. The book's first chapter is titled "Basic Design Principles" and confuses by mixing elements of design with principles of design.
The layout of the book is uninspired. The pink horizontal hairlines on every page do nothing to improve the look of the book but are instead distracting. The one nice thing about this book is that the examples used are generally high quality design.
This book does not deliver good value for money, especially considering the other graphic design books on the market.
Lazy and lacking in explicitness.......2004-05-27
Please read David M. Chess's eloquent review of this poor-quality book. I intuitively felt much of what he was able to say with his obviously greater design education.
Book not for General Designers.......2004-05-03
This book targets all Designers (Designers in Print, Packaging, Web Design...etc), so I would not suggest it if you are looking for a specific book about your choice of field in design. It is also not suitable for designers who knows the basics of design, because it talks a lot about elementary stuff. Generally it is a good, easy to read book with lots of examples and excercises.

Customer Reviews:
Useful.......2002-10-10
This book is very useful and I use it as a guide when producing newsletters for my campus. The author's tone is a bit high-handed but the information is invaluable. There are examples of styles and set-ups for very fine standard styles. Not anything cutting-edge in it, though. The author is thorough in language useage and styles. Lots of what not to dos in here.
Really old book.......2002-09-04
This is a good book with lots of tried and true design tips, but if you're looking to redesign your newsletter and give it a "current" feel, be forwarned: this book is almost 10 years old, and the sample newsletters they feature show it. I think it's a good book, but given its age it should be cheaper.
Excellent Source for Designing a Polished Newsletter.......1998-08-23
With this book plus "Producing a First-Class Newsletter" By Barbara A. Fanson, I learned everything I needed to know to produce a very polished redesign of the monthly newsletter for my company's customers. Well worth the money.

This book (and the inclosed diskette) makes the production of a professional-looking newsletter extremely easy. Just load it into your word processor and start answering the questions. Delete the questions and you will discover that you have written the text... painlessly. I have tried writing newsletters from templates in my word processor and the results were blah. My first newsletter using this book had members of my organization calling me to tell me how great it looked. Needless to say, I took ALL the credit.
Newsletters Made Simple.......2000-03-21
Even as an experienced newsletter editor, I was very impressed with "Quick and Easy Newsletters". It really covers all the bases. I had my doubts about the author's claim that anyone with no experience would be able to do a newsletter in one afternoon. But after reading through it (and trying out the templates on the CD) I'm convinced it's not only possible but highly likely! The book covers design AND content. It takes you step-by-step through the entire process. Now when people want me to help them do their newsletter, I recommend they buy this book.
