A Guide to Elegance: For Every Woman Who Wants to Be Well and Properly Dressed on All Occasions
ASIN: 0525948236
Release Date: 2004-06-03 |
Book Description
A charming guide to finding elegance in every aspect of life, featuring rarely seen photographs and revelations about the actress who perfected gracious living.
Propelled by popular titles such as Swell: A Girl's Guide to the Good Life and Three Black Skirts: All You Need to Survive, the decorum category touts plenty of trendy advice. But no one has demonstrated the power of poise as memorably as Audrey Hepburn, whose enchanting essence on and off the screen has easily withstood the test of time.
Inspired by a beloved icon who balanced sensibility and sex appeal, celebrity and humanitarian efforts with evident ease, How to Be Lovely examines the art of being a woman. More philosophy than biography, Hepburn fans will uncover the deeply thinking, deeply feeling woman who found success on the silver screen, in her own home and in the world at large. Through Hepburn's own words from interviews, what her friends said and behind-the-scenes stories, readers will develop a new outlook on their own careers, love lives, families, wardrobes, finances, health concerns, friendships, and the world at large.
Published to coincide with Audrey Hepburn's would be 75th birthday, How to Be Lovely features an elegant design worthy of the book's namesake. For the millions who continue to delight in Breakfast at Tiffany's, Roman Holiday, and the woman behind them all, this is the guide to living genuinely with glamour and grace.
Customer Reviews:
I just love this book!!.......2006-11-04
This is such a wonderful book and a staple for how to deal with everyday things that life brings on. Audrey Hepburn was not only beautiful...but very wise. There is so many great quotes in this book...definitely a must read!!
Where have all the LADIES gone?.......2006-05-27
If pop star Pink sings "Where oh where have all the smart people gone, where oh where could they be?"... then this book cries "Where oh where have all the LADIES gone? Where oh where could they be?" If ever there is a role model for a renaissance in being a lady (not to be confused with a bombshell)... it is Audrey. Her grace, aristocratic sophistication, refinement, depth, humanitarian spirit, and genuine posh-like glamour was real as much as it was regal. In a world of cheap bombshell images the statement: that which is least seen is most beautiful is truer than ever. Audrey was an archetype of an era where being a lady was respected and advocated.
The Ultimate Guide to Loveliness, Both Inside and Out........2006-01-11
A lot of people misuse the term "hero." Lots of people think it's an athlete, an actor, or a singer. I regard Audrey Hepburn as my hero and a great role model. She was a rare and unusually timeless beauty with her gamine looks and a gorgeous accent, often mistaken as British, that also belied part of her time in Nazi occupied Holland. With the grace of a dancer and a princess to add to her intoxicating manner of speech, she had consistently excellent taste in clothes, impeccable hairstyles, and an approach to living that more people in this world would do well to adhere to.
Hepburn isn't a hero because of her time on screen; that's just an admirable sort of glamorous display. She fought the resistance as a brave young girl with her mother during WWII, helping the allies escape to freedom. Later in her life, when her career as an actress had more or less played itself out, she took her fame and used it to help give aid to children of third world countries who were starving as she and her fellow Dutchmen had all those years earlier. She was generous, humble, uncomplicated, and beautiful beyond the physical sense. Sure, she chain smoked and was insecure, she had that one crooked tooth and insisted she had a square face, but her physical beauty came from the simple brightness inside of her that was often illuminated by those large, exotic brown eyes. Je ne sais quoi, indeed! Audrey was a woman who knew how to be the consummate woman by keeping her approach to life simple and uncomplicated, yet managing to make people place her on a pedestal of goddess-like status. That is a gift few people possess, but she was able to utilize it with seemingly little work. Melissa Hellstern's book takes several quotes by Hepburn and friends, lots of great b&w photos, and turns them into something of a positive handbook to help women, regardless of any age, learn to possess simple, optimistic, life-affirming class.
Perfect Stocking Stuffer.......2005-12-01
I gave this book to my mom for Mother's Day and haven't stopped hearing how much she likes it. I highly recommend it as the perfect stocking stuffer, especially for the price on Amazon. Just ordered two more for my sisters.

For Young Ministers.......2007-05-12
Excellent book. I also found The Minister's Crucible by Fred C. Rochester a great book for ministers, want to be ministers, and those already in ministry. Book books are a must read.
Indispensible !.......2001-05-01
The Star Book for Ministers is a wonderful reference guide. It is jam packed with information yet small enough to discreetly and easily carry with you. If you are new to the ministry or someone who has been in the ministry a while, it contains practical helps and information.
Topics covered include: Entering the Christian Ministry, Preaching the Gospel, Pastoral Care, etc. There are almost 100 pages of scripture one can refer to by topic (Confession & Forgiveness, Christian Love, Grief, Comfort, Beneditions, etc). This is most helpful when counseling someone.
Finally there are practical guidelines for dealing with others during weddings, funerals and baptisms as well as suggestions for ceremonies. Indispensible!
The famous black book for ministers!.......2001-03-31
This is THE book to own of its type. Highly recommended to new and old ministers alike. It should be in every ministers library. I always refer back to mine.
Highly Recommended for all Ministers.......2000-06-16
I have personally used and highly recommend the Star Book for Ministers. Filled with useful forms, ceremonial procedures, guidelines for different types of services, parliamentary guides for churches, and even ecclesiastical sample letters and blanks, I have found it a priceless resource. I highly recommend this book for all ministers, and especially for the newly ordained clergy or anyone starting a church.
Must Have.......2000-05-20
If your a new minister then this book is a must have. All the basic information you need for day to day activities. Priceless.

Book Description
Here is one of the most enjoyable and illuminating books ever published for the music lover, a feast of delightful anecdotes that reveal the all-too-human side of the great composers and performers.
There are stories of appetites (Handel eating dinner for three), embarrassments (Brahms falling asleep as Liszt plays), oddities (Bruckner's dog being trained to howl at Wagner), and devotions (a lovely admirer disrobing in tribute to Puccini). There are memorable accounts of Stravinsky telling Proust how much he hates Beethoven, of Tchaikovsky's first bewildering telephone call, of Dvorak's strange love of pigeons, and of Verdi's intricate maneuvering to keep the now-famous melody of "La donna è mobile" top secret.
There is also wonderful trivia (Beethoven loved to cat "bread soup" made with ten raw eggs), along with eccentric strategies (Verdi, disturbed by the sound of street organs playing arias from his operas, hired them all for a season and kept them locked in a room). There are examples of musicians munificent generosity (Haydn called Mozart "the greatest composer known to me, either in person or by name"), and scathing dismissal ("Have you heard any Stockhausen?" the conductor Sir Thomas Beecham was asked. "No," he replied, "but I believe I have trodden in some").
Collected from thousands of books, articles, and unpublished manuscripts (with historical sources provided in extensive notes), these anecdotes appear in their original form, throwing fresh light on familiar figures in the musical hall of fame. For browsing, reading, research and amusement, this book is a grand entertainment for concert-goers, record-buyers, operamanes, gossips and music lovers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
More light than usual in Lebrecht's little-known collection.......1999-07-19
Lebrecht gives life to these composers/musicians much in the same spirit that they gave of themselves in their own works. In many ways, these stories are as informative as some music history texts. From Bach to Stravinsky, these stories will make you laugh and cry. If you've grown weary of Lebrecht's more recent dark outlooks on the future of classical music, this book looks back on the sunnier days. Full of humorous, informative and touching stories, you won't regret you bought this!

Book Description
Bob Marley began writing lyrics in the early 1960's and he continued to produce them until his passing in 1981. Critics have called these songs the best of the millennium. Yet,few readers have ever read Marley's magic on the page. For the first time, his eldest daughter Cedella has made a selection of her father's most prophetic and personal poems, insights, and conversational messages. Here are meditations to soothe the soul and thoughts to penetrate the mind. Here too is an encapsulated life of Bob Marley, the man. In his spare writings we can see the ebb and flow of his journey as an artist and a humanitarian. Packaged for purse and pocket, this colleciton is sure to find a place in everyone's heart.
Customer Reviews:
What is it you say most?.......2007-05-17
Since life is just an illusion to reflect back at ourselves, I am glad to have the chance to ponder what Bob Marley thought and spoke most of. I agree with a lot of them, but not all. This is definately a book of "less is more". Makes me want to write "me own". Maybe he knows his name now, "51" or if he comes again "56" will we know him? "55" He's the rainbow too.
56 Thoughts from 56 Hope Road.......2005-07-20
Some are lyrics....which are good, but would have liked to see more quotes.
Pretty Good Stuff.......2005-06-29
Personally, I enjoyed this booklet. It contains some very thought-provoking quotes from the don gargon, Bob Marley. What a way to capture these thoughts, Cedella and Gerald! Nice work entirely.
The Prophet Among Us.......2004-12-07
After the 60s, the movement for a better world faded into the 70s, and dissappeared entirely in the 80s. At least in the USA. God and his disciples were still alive and well in Jamaica. Instead of fishermen, they were musicians. When you listen deeply, you'll hear the message clearly. Bob Marley carried the truth for our times. That torch still burns in his music and the writing that came afterward. Read 56 Thoughts. It will touch you, move you, and enlighten you. 56 Thoughts is a book you will never put down. It will go with you every where because it is pure soul from a philosopher who knew what he was talking about.
True Bob.......2004-12-03
This book by Cedella Marley sets the record straight in one-line and short off-the-cuff wisps of light and dark, humorous and serious wisdom that Bob Marley was famous for. I read it once a day, twice a day, three times a day, as Doctor Jamaica recommends.

Book Description
This collection of Native American quotations, songs, and poems is paired in a handsome, high-quality art book with the classic works of Edward S. Curtis. Convinced he was witnessing an irreversible loss of their cultures, Curtis began traveling the West in the 1890 to photograph members of various tribes. His striking images are a perfect complement to profound observations from Lone Man, Chief Seattle, Mourning Dove, Geronimo, and other wise men and women of the Pawnee, Oglala Sioux, Paiute, Wabanaki Algonquin, and Ojibwa.

Vocal Wisdom Indeed.......2006-06-08
I am currently in training with someone that I can only describe as a disciple of Lamperti. He is almost always quoting him during lessons. Someone else said that the book is mostly a philosophical work. This is true - Lamperti does not try to give an explanation of "how" to accomplish the noble goals laid out in the book. There is no book that can do this, since singing is so esoteric and difficult to teach. In the art of singing, we seek invisible goals via musculatures that can only be influenced through suggestion, and indirectly at that. I must say personally that I think this book belongs on the shelf of every student of singing. Since most of what we do as singers is influenced HEAVILY by our thoughts, this book is indeed a help. It provides the context out of which technical facility can advance.
Wisdom of singing.......2002-11-01
This is a great book to have around as a singer. It consists of many brilliant soundbites and thoughts to the art of singing. It is not meant to be read from ront to back at any given time, but rather, it should be opened up randomly to any section, and be read to get an idea to keep in mind while singing.
Lamperti Wisdom - Vocal Philosophy for Singers.......2000-09-01
Lamperti was a famous voice teacher in the "old school" of bel canto. The wisdom found in this small book is best suited for the person who already is a singer, and is looking for sage advice about the "art." This is provided in small statements and paragraphs - rather like "info-bytes" from a great master. The beginner may end up with more questions than answers. The more advanced singer will want to make this a book to "live with" over a period of many years. A book for the "New Age" from a sage of old.

Book Description
Written between 1947 and 1960 and first published in 1963, the prose work in the first of these two volumes reflects Louis Zukofsky's ongoing obsession with Shakespeare--whose plays he had first seen performed in Yiddish--and is central to understanding Zukofsky's work. Tracing the themes of knowledge, love and physical vision ("the eyes have it") through both Shakespeare's plays and the poetry, Bottom: On Shakespeare is more than a compendious act of homage by one poet to another. In effect, it lays out Zukofsky's poetics and theory of knowledge on a grand scale, tracing his themes through the whole of Western culture, from the Classical Greeks through William Carlos Williams.
The second volume of Bottom: On Shakespeare consists of Celia Thaew Zukofsky's spare operatic setting of Shakespeare's Pericles, Prince of Tyre, a play in which Zukofsky saw Shakespeare rewriting the classic plots and tropes of the Odyssey. The Wesleyan edition features a new foreword by Bob Perelman.
Customer Reviews:
Thought as Music.......2003-11-25
Of all the (countless) responses to the Bard by writers over the last four hundred years or so, this one may be the most idiosyncratic; it may also be the most intelligent, insightful and inspired. BOTTOM: ON SHAKESPEARE reminds me a little bit of Burton's THE ANATOMY OF MELANCHOLY, first, in its encyclopedic bulk, and, second, in the preponderance of quotes in its pages. Louis Zukofsky was a world-class quoter (he's spiritual kin to Walter Benjamin, I think, who dreamed of writing-if that's the right word-a book composed entirely of quotations), and in BOTTOM, he cites everyone from Homer to Wittgenstein, and whole pages of Shakespeare, for the central purpose of elucidating what may be thought of as the book's thesis, which Zukofsky puts thus:
"Love is to reason as the eyes are to mind."
I don't pretend to understand entirely what that means. But the idea that to perceive something as it truly is requires love, or is the beginning of love, or both, is beautiful.
It's important to keep in mind that although he was a professor of English, widely read, and had an acute literary-critical gift, Zukofsky was, above all, an artist. A staggering amount of scholarship went into BOTTOM, but it is, in the end, a poetic response to Shakespeare, a poet's reply to a poet. By academic standards, therefore, BOTTOM is downright eccentric. An example. Elsewhere, Zukofsky writes, "And it is possible in imagination to divorce speech of all graphic elements, to let it become a movement of sounds." Thought as music. A writer as deeply ethical as Zukofsky would never say something like that if he didn't mean it, and so we find that the second part of BOTTOM, the culmination of his thought on Shakespeare, isn't critical prose, but a musical setting for PERICLES, composed by Celia Zukofsky, Louis's wife.
Obviously, this book isn't an introduction to Shakespeare. The student coming to grips with the Bard won't get much help here. Like Zukofsky's poetry, of which it's very much an extension, BOTTOM can be obscure and taxing. On the other hand, it's as beautiful as it is difficult. At every turn, some idea or turn of phrase will make the patient reader gasp (or sigh, I suppose, depending on one's temperament). For anyone really, vitally engaged with Shakespeare, for any fan of Zukofsky, and for anyone who really cares about poetry, five stars is too few to recommend BOTTOM: ON SHAKESPEARE.

Great fun! Great thoughts! Great math!.......2000-06-22
I recommend this book to anyone who thinks.
This book is one of my favorites to keep on the shelf by my computer. I find myself flipping through it often for an idea to spark a piece of writing or a quote with which to begin a math lesson. I find myself being surprised by the ruminations of some famous mathematicians and famous non-mathematicians. Some quotes are from something they said, others from what they wrote, and some are even from poems composed. They inspire laughter, contemplation, a grin (as we hear quotes from people confused about math), and even a desire to go out and examine the world with wonder... as mathematicians do.
I also need to add that they did a fantastic job of designing the book. There are illustrations and cartoons that compliment the different quotes or make interesting points all on their own. This is no small book of quotes either -- not "a quote a page" -- but more of a slender pocket volume with easy-to-read type and up to four quotes on a page.
I recommend this book for anyone -- it's not just a math thing!
But any math teachers out there? BUY THIS! You can use some of these to start some wonderful lessons, mathematical conversations, and even some writing in your classroom.

Book Description
Madonna: Inspirations captures the singular essence of this star and highlights her determination as an inspiration to all. Using only the star's own words, Madonna offers readers a glance into the hard work and dedication of this woman who is not afraid to bare it all-a natural inspiration to everyone who dares to be different. Catch a glimpse into this enigma:
" "Sometimes you gotta tell the world the way you feel, even if they don't want to hear about it."
" "When I'm hungry, I eat. When I'm thirsty, I drink. When I feel like saying something, I say
it."
" "When my daughter was born, I was born again."
Madonna features over 50 photographs in a thoroughly modern design for a striking and unique look. The entire text of the book is composed of Madonna's own words.

Nothing intellectual.......2007-06-28
If you think there may be profound philosophical sayings here, you'll be disappointed. Pics, sure, but if this is how she talks, she sounds like a fortune cookie.
Her teeny bopper fans will love it, but no one else will be impressed. Makes you wonder why it was written.
Lessons on Life.......2007-01-21
Tells you a little about Madonna's ideals and perspectives on life. Although a worthy collctible, it's probably more geared to her female fans...
Wanna-Be: Then and Now... For Serious Fans Only.......2006-07-14
Inspirations are a "for your eyes only" must have for the Madonna fan - legacy or current. She says it well and besides ... got to hand it to Madonna for her endurance in showbiz. In June in Montreal she asked the crowd "Who is more exciting? Me or the Grand Prix?"... YOU Madonna ... is, was, and always... with inspirations on the way. But heck - I've been a fan since Lucky Star (back when I was a tween) ... and Madonna's star shines just as bright as ever.
Let's Get Serious, Shall We?!.......2006-04-28
Just another proof positive example of the rich getting richer on the backs of the stupid struggling to get stupider.
Nuff said!
Short and Sweet.......2006-01-17
A fine example of less is more. Comprised of random thoughts, artful pictures, and an engaging layout; this book is a wonderful insight into Madonna, an extraordinary superstar who shares her ordinary thoughts w/her own personal touch. A must for all Madonna fans!
