A lot of pictures, plus multiple ways to do the same thing. I think this book is a bible to Framing. A+.

Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (Paperback)

After preparing 8 pages of detailed engineering-size construction drawings for contractors to bid on a two-story addition to our house, I came across this book. Even though I have many years of (mostly remodeling) experience, this book provided lots of great tips on strengthening foundations and walls, flashing, roofing and other areas. Those drawings have now been modified to incorporate what I've learned. Lucky I read this book BEFORE starting the project. Change orders, once construction begins, are costly, since you have little leverage with the contractor at that point.

Materials and techniques used in frame construction have evolved over the years, and the previous (similar) book I had was substantially obsolete. This one cites the latest materials and approaches, as of the year 2000, and is well worth the cost for anyone contemplating a framing job of almost any size. It's doubtful that any contractor knows the best methods to do everything this book explains, not to mention non-contractors. That makes this book a good resource for any experience level. About half of the book's pages have one or more detailed drawings to show you how to do "it" (see customer images for a sample). The spiral binding is particularly helpful in using it on-the-job, or to photo-copy or scan.

The five chapters, foundations, floors, walls, roofs, and stairs, cover virtually every aspect of frame construction, including decks and porches.

The book doesn't cover everything. For example, there is no mention of the APA (Wood Engineering Association), Narrow Wall Bracing Method, an important subject when building sunrooms, or other structure with narrow corner walls or walls between window or door openings. Nevertheless, it's a great reference well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Straightforward.......2007-09-23

This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction.......2007-05-31

This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09

I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.

4 out of 5 stars Good coffee table or bathroom reading book.......2007-08-10

This is basically like all those magazines - Sunset, Martha Stewart Living, etc. etc, - wherein you buy it with the hopes of being inspired to create, update, remake, etc. and you ACTUALLY NEVER WILL, except in book form!

I love reading the book - it's cute, kitschy and definitely entertaining, but really, who can create these crazy wall decorations and/or press kits and have them turn out flawless!?!??

2 out of 5 stars Who is this book for?.......2007-07-12

I know a little about Lupton's career -- teaching, writing, and curating shows. She seems very intelligent, but I don't understand who this book is really for. Beginning or advanced people? Crafters or designers? Some of the ideas in this book (wrapping paper) are so obvious that I think anyone with an ounce of creativity has already figured them out. Some things (commercial embroidery) seem very advanced and specialized, and not useful to most people. The layout of the book is nice, but the content is very inconsistent. Was this really a student project, as someone mentioned? If so, I think Lupton should have made more of an effort to make sure that everything came together and made for a coherent whole. I think there are better DIY books out there.

2 out of 5 stars How To Be Ironically Tacky.......2007-04-08

Pretentious art student tripe, mostly. I discovered that I can wrap gifts with newspaper! I can use a graph paper notebook for a scrapbook! I was looking for examples of cutting-edge design, and a methodology to implement it. What I got was the product of the tragically hip after too many lattes.

5 out of 5 stars A excellent beginners guide.......2007-03-30

Design It Yourself is a lucid and accessible introduction to design basics for the lay-designer/artist or small business owner. An invaluable find!!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-03-12

This inspirational book was born and bred at Baltimore's Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), under the direction of its graphic design director. There's no doubt that DIY design has been on the rise over the last twenty years, and this handbook does an excellent job of introducing the concept to the uninitiated. It starts with two sections, "Why DIY?" and "DIY Theory" which serve to set things up nicely without being overly dense. The excellent design and outstanding photography showcases tons of nice examples in 28 categories across a range of media, from blogs to zines. This is definitely not a step-by-step guide that holds one's hand through processes -- but it will help anyone understand how to start seeing the world as a designer. It's not perfect by any means, and experts in particular fields will find small details to quibble with. For example, the embroidery section doesn't provide complete DIY details, instead directing the reader to outsource it to commercial embroidery firms. Another example is in the web site section, which advocates the use of nested tables, a technique long out of favor in the web development community. But these are very minor quibbles about an excellent book that belongs in the hands of anyone (especially kids and teens) with the slightest interest in self-expression.

Book Description

As with all Graphic Guides, this one provides comprehensive information through hundreds of black-and-white illustrations and authoritative text. The author demystifies every aspect of site construction, including proper grading and drainage techniques, irrigation systems, septic systems, outdoor lighting, decks, fences, retaining walls, barbecues, pools, and hot tubs. This is a thorough handbook covering the systems and features of residential sites.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference for residential landscape design.......2007-05-20

What an excellent little book! As a landscape designer (who provides the aethetic overview for the contractor to install), this book has proven extremely helpful in answering my never-ending questions, "how will ____ be built?" As such, it is invaluable in the design process as well.

Aimed at residential design, every hardscape element I need is explained and illustrated in a professional, thorough, easy-to-understand way. Examples of what's covered: retaining walls, steps, drainage, railings, irrigation, lighting, septic systems, paving systems, deck structures, built-in fireplaces, built-in kitchens, water, pools, spas....etc, etc, etc.
Of the more complicated things (built-in kitchens, swimming pools), the authors kept the details simple, describing the overall concepts, so that a designer can show them, but a skilled contractor would need to fill in. Of the things a do-it-yourselfer can do (e.g. fences, simple paving), there is a more thorough covering.

This book is NOT among the comprehensive construction standards references that must (by necessity of their content) be priced in the $100 to $200 range. This one is focused and kept to-the-point as a quick but thorough reference for all manner of outdoor construction used in residential landscapes.

For landscapers, landscape designers, homeowners, artists--anyone needing professional construction information edited down to the essentials-- I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars finally the book i've been looking for!!!.......2004-11-14

i am so thankful to the authors of this book! they explained everything with such clarity and attention to detail. i am recommending this book to a lot of fellow landscape designers. this book has clear and well drawn details on a lot of landcape structures. it is far far better than a lot of text books on the same subject, and it's worth ten times more than its price.

Book Description

Images produced by the process of screen-printing surround us everywhere we go, from the garments we wear to the pillows we put on our couches; from the bags we carry our belongings in to the mugs from which we drink coffee. Screen printing has a long history--it is the way Andy Warhol had his celebrity portraits produced. It can be done on a large scale, but it is also very easy to do with simple and affordable materials at home. With the increasing interest in personalization and in making a statement with your own customized clothes and artwork, screen printing is being rediscovered by the younger DIY audience. It is a technique with a long history--but suddenly lots of crafters are trying their hand at it at home.

The aim of this book is to simplify the process of screen-printing. Presented in a step-by-step format to show that it can be used in a variety of environments, whether they plan to print on a table in a kitchen (that's how Laura Ashley started her design empire in London), a longer table in a garage, or a full studio in a basement or loft. It will also include chapters on adapting screen-printing to special areas of artistic interest and suggestions for applying the technique to produce something beautiful and functional. Home Screen Printing Workshop shows them how to print their own designer T-shirts, tote bags, scarves or posters, banners and serigraphs. The sections include simple resist printing, making a direct block out screen, making a photographic screen with found objects, making a one color simple repeat design, printing a multicolor design, printing on t-shirts, creating an engineered print, using the drama of B&W, printing with three dimensional ink, discharge printing (ink-less printing), making a photographic screen with textures, and solving common screen print problems.

    1 out of 5 stars A silly Book.......2007-03-21

A silly book. Thought it would really have something to do with design of a certain kind - not silly and useless advise. Definitely should be in the category of "13 or under" - a waste of money!

4 out of 5 stars Gee, I really liked it........2006-02-10

I don't get the animosity everyone expresses in these reviews -- come on, like you didn't know Cynthia Rowley wrote this? It's tongue in cheek. It's supposed to affect the way you approach things -- not be taken literally. Alter your outlook a little. Tracy Porter threw a party in her farm's silo -- I'll bet all of you just loved that to bits. But which ones of you are going to DO it? Sheesh. I really got a kick out of this book. Don't take it so seriously.

    1 out of 5 stars SUPER!.......2004-06-16

I NEVER READ THIS WHOLE BOOK CAUSE IT WAS SOO BAD! DO NOT BUY IT, PLEEAASSEE DON'T, IT'S JUST A WASTE OF MONEY!

1 out of 5 stars Is this for real???.......2004-03-12

This book was a disappointment. There is a small handful of good ideas (ie. using frayed denim as a bedskirt, paintng one wall a bright color and the rest of the walls white, hanging hooks on the bedroom wall to hang your outfit for the next day, etc.). However, the remaining totally absurd ideas, the constant suggestions of having a bar/minibar throughout various rooms of the house, the abuse to books (nevermind perhaps reading the books and enrichening oneself), and the flippant suggestions to just have your carpenter come over and do the work made me think the authors are just a bunch of arrogant mindless rich witches most likely on drugs. Not everybody can afford to own a place or hire a carpenter/contractor, especially during these times. The real creativity lies in making something wonderful with little resources. I also did not appreciate the broad generalizations they make and hold as truth, such as stating it is a known fact that people who can cook cannot make a good cup of coffee. Ehhh? I don't think so. This was the most irritating book to read, and I had to force myself to read it through to the end. I really felt like burning it when I finished reading. And I consider myself pretty open-minded.... It's amazing how much crap gets allowed to be published.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time.......2003-11-01

This book has dumb dialogue and so few pictures it's a shame to call it a design oriented book. The swell line is adorable and I believed this book to be something that would play off of that. It did not. It had absurd ideas, bland drawing, boring writing, stupid stories and little reference to anything related to interior design or the swell line. DISAPPOINTING. Don't waste any money or time on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, concrete advice.......2006-07-10

I agree the book may be misnamed because it has few instant solutions. However, it's one of the better decorating books I've read because it doesn't rely on photos for content. The author provides practical, concrete advice, such as creating a mock kitchen island with boxes and walking around it for a week before investing in one, to make sure you can live with the size of the one you have in mind. I have put into practice three or four of the general ideas she shares in this book, and as far as I'm concerned that's a pretty high batting average. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars There are better books for this........2006-03-09

I was fairly disappointed in this book. As an impatient decorator, I was hoping for a lot more visual ideas (and valuable tips). Most of the 201 shortcuts aren't really shortcuts at all, and more to the point, of the 201 there are probably only 2-3 real gems, the rest are wasted space. There are far better books for those who wish to improve their homes.

No need to read cover to cover unless you want to, and there is no dense text--you can thumb through this book anywhere for instant advice from a decorating pro--and the many color photos are a visual feast for the eyes, as well! Outstanding job! I look forward to the author's next work!

      Book Description

Are things at home out of hand? Is the thought of putting things in order just…overwhelming? With these simple, quickly implemented solutions, life can become less stressful—and the messy habits of a lifetime will disappear along with the chaos. The focus is on the little things that make a big difference—like not having to search for the car keys at the last minute—and the book is as organized as the house will be when you’re through: it begins with advice on assessing the accumulated junk and eliminating the excess, and moves on to shopping for containers, applying clutter strategies, labeling jars and boxes, and creating a proper place for everything, room by room. The ideas are smart and attractive!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT..But a Few More Pictures Would Have Been Helpful!!.......2007-05-04

I received this book today and sat down and read it cover to cover! It was very easy reading and helpful in many areas. My only suggestion would be additional pictures in some of those areas that most of us struggle with. For example, on page 57, the author makes suggestions for storing lids for pots and pans, as well as plastic storage containers. The idea "might" be good, but a picture would have been very helpful for this unusual suggestion. Instead, there are 3 pictures extolling the virtues of installing sliding shelves to store pots and pans (without lids!) Another place pictures would have been helpful is on page 72. The author suggests installing an extension rod or pot rack a few inches from the closet ceiling to hang purses. It is unclear how this would work - a picture would have been worth a 1000 words! Other than a few more pictures that would have been helpful, this book is GREAT! I would recommend it for anyone looking for additional and creative ways to control the everyday clutter!
