3 out of 5 stars Vast But Flawed Coverage of Codes & Ciphers.......2006-06-14

While this book covers a wide range of topics, I found it to be shaky on some topics. In particular, modern developments such as quantum cryptography, electronic warfare terms (SIGINT, ELINT, and especially RADINT--book description is wrong). Perhaps the author's strength is in historical cryptography, and he has not researched or does not understand modern developments. My overall impression is that the book covers an enormous range of topics, but in a shallow way. Cryptanalysis is not discussed in any depth, unlike other code/cipher books I've read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent History.......2006-03-19

This book is a history of codes, ciphers and secret forms of communication from ancient times until the present. It is the most complete and the most current of any such books I have ever found.

Complete: I have read many books that talk about Rommel's army reading the codes sent by the American military attache in Cairo. But I didn't know that this was in the 'Black' code, and that the capture of the German radio outpost at Tel-el-Eisa revealed the fact that the Black code had been broken and that then the Allies began using the Black code with false information.

Current: The U.S. Navy used a cipher machine during WW II called the ECM Mark II. Information on this machine was declassified in 1996 (60 years after the machine was adopted), and that information is included here.

An interesting section of the book is on Unsolved Scripts. Here are some writing samples discovered by archaeologists that remain unsolved.

This book does not go into modern computer based codes. These have gotten so complex that you need a book on them by themselves, as well as a degree in mathematics.

Product Description

Acne Messages: Crack the Code of Your Zits and Say Goodbye to Acne by Naweko San-Joy guides you -the exacerbated acne sufferer- to find out exactly what causes your unique case of acne.

This is the shortcoming of most acne prescriptions and creams. They treat acne as a target as opposed to probing into what emotional, physical, psychological and/or nutritional needs set off your acne trigger.

Once you decode a zit, it reveals a wealth of practical information about you. For example, zits expose how well you cope with stress and whether or not your specific nutritional needs are met.

Also, if you are realizing your fullest potential, if the your organs are functioning at their optimum levels, and whether or not your self esteem is balanced are just of sample of the revelations communicated by zits.

Using ancient wisdom and modern science San-Joyz helps you pinpoint the root cause of your unique zits and ultimately and confidently say goodbye to acne.

5 out of 5 stars Once you know what's wrong, you can make it right!.......2006-09-07

I know that we, acne sufferes, are vulnerable people that want to get rid of this condition that carries such a heavy stigma as quickly as possible.
But if you're considering buying this book and get the best out of it, read it with an open mind and a positive atitude.
San-Joyz offers an aproach other than the traditional methods used, which is more holistic as well as affordable.
The book is well organized and easy to read, but above all, you've got to put this knowledge into practice.
Like any other book of this kind it's up to you to decide what works for you and stick with it.
I never quite understood why I've had an acne outbreak. I'm 54 years old and had a pimple once in a while but nothing out of extraordinary.
In this book I've found out why my face was breaking out: I had a poor protein digestion wich provoked acne inflammations.
The reason I'm so sure of that is because when my acne problem starded I was on a high protein diet wich was particularly though on me, considering I'm vegetarian.
At that time I was chewing meat just enough to be able to swallow it quickly since I've never liked it much, and that led to a poor protein digestion.
I quit eating meat and replaced it with some protein bars, now my skin started clearing out.
So basically this is what this book does, it helps you find out the cause of your acne, so that you can heal thoroughly.
I have to agree with the author, acne does have a message for you. Thank you Naweko!

5 out of 5 stars Use Acne Messages Don't Just Read It .......2005-08-07

It's sounds like the first reviewer only read the Amazon.com Look Inside pages to write a book for Acne Messages. Shall we say, incomplete review. Acne Messages answers a ton of questions about acne, from why people get acne as adults to what you should expect from your own anti-acne program. The book is full of solid research from medical journals and San-Joyz's own research on acne.

Anybody annoyed to death with acne and run of the mill acne advice will find this book to be a real breakthrough.

This book discusses hormones, nutrition, your state of mind and a whole lot of other stuff that you would think that has absolutely nothing to do with acne. She talks about what you do everyday, like self-talk to eating, and how this affects your immune system and hormones. She then tells you how these little things can turn into a zit. It's unbelievable, but when she shows, using facts from medical journals, how your everyday choices can cause zits, you have to take note.

She then shows you want to do to reverse a zit using a face chart and organ chart.

The book is decently organized. You can for instance find a whitehead on your forehead, and she shows you step-by-step what that particular zits means, what body parts are connected to that location and then what you can do right now to make the zit go away. And, you can do all this from your home without needing to go out and buy and a lot of expensive stuff.

Acne Messages really was like nothing I had ever read before about acne. I can gladly recommend it. Just use the whole book, from page one to the index, not just the first chapter.

1 out of 5 stars Book went into recycling bin.......2005-07-25

As a 30 year old female with hormonal acne, I was looking for any help that give me a clue about why the treatments I used as a teenager weren't working now. I was disappointed in this book because a) it didn't give descriptions of each kind of zit and how to specifically combat them, b) it was written in a seemingly stream-of-conscious, unorganized manner, and c) the author recommends colonics, among other silly treatments, to help get rid of acne. What this book is: a testament of a personal journey, still in progress. The author even admits she still has acne. What this book isn't: a step-by-step guide to fighting acne.

Excellent book that gives a balanced view of the subject. I especially found sections III and IV very enlightening!

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Like to Think.......2000-02-08

Chuck Missler's careful detail within his books tend to make his writing difficult to keep up with. Cosmic Codes is an exception. His chapters are broken up into headings that allow the reader to take a breath or to chew like the intellectual cows we tend to become. Cosmic Codes is not for the faint of thought, you have to be ready to think; to think beyond time, space and our predefined view of reality. Cosmic Codes also puts the "Bible Code" in its proper place. They do exist, you cannot escape the math on the odds, but Missler puts the evidence in its proper perspective. There are some errors here and there. For example, Rambsel notes the absence of Judas from the Isaiah 53 ELS findings. I have since found it within the text. However, considering the topic and the vast amount of cross-referencing, it is brilliant, albiet imperfect; Like Chuck himself. When reading Cosmic Codes, as with all other works by Chuck Missler, start by reading Acts 17:11 in the Bible; it is his caveat.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad about the mistakes in Hebrew!.......2000-01-20

This is such an interesting book, but perhaps Missler has copied the Hebrew errors of Bullinger, Jeffrey, and Rambsel, when discussing the Torah Codes. There are many absurdities. At the bottom of page 112, what in the world is "tegoleh"? In the center of page 155, in describing Jesus as a Nazarene, the Hebrew word would be "Notzri," spelled nun, tzadi, resh, yod. It is related to "Netzer," meaning branch. Instead, he has spelled "Nazir," which means a monk or abstainer: nun, zayin, yod, resh. The full-page chart on page 159 is full of mistakes. This kind of carelessness makes Christian "authorities" on Hebrew scriptures look foolish, and their subjective "codes" even more so. This is unfortunate, but the average reader needs to be informed.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible panorama of evidence illumimating the bible.......1999-10-28

This book is for believers and nonbelievers both. This book will take the reader on a journey through the Hebrew scriptures and the codes beneath them, including the Yeshua codes. Also, detailed background on the Feasts of Israel, the fulfilled prophecies of the Hebrew scriptures, and more fascinating tidbits than I can write about here. Reading this will make you realize how much you can miss by just glossing over the scriptures casually as so many of us do.

5 out of 5 stars A most interesting book you won't want to put down........1999-10-17

"Cosmic Codes" by Chuck Missler, helps confirm ones beliefs, not through faith alone, but through the complexity of design in the form of messages through symbolism and ciphertext, which our LORD has so diligently placed within HIS written word "The Bible". Chuck Missler takes you through an overview of these messages, systematically placed by JESUS CHRIST; to authenticate HIS word as HE proclaimed it. For those who consider the "Bible" as just another storybook, prepare to throw that view right out the window. I recommend that you hold on to your "brown britches" (Lord Nelson pun), for HIS coming is surely on the horizon. In reading "Cosmic Codes" one can enjoy the work of a man who has dedicated himself to proclaiming that love declared by our LORD, to all those who would listen. The choice to hear that message of love is now up to you!

This was a very informational and interesting book. I would recomend for everyone interested in biblical history to read this book. Even though it has to do with the Torah, any Christian could also read it. The Bible Code is very accurate and could be used in a protective way. It cannot tell the future, but can help us find out what lay ahead in our lives. I liked this book better than any other I read.

The book is well thought out. It is engaging, clear, and fun. One can read it for hours or just a few minutes. Its straightforward descriptions, including the actual encryption technique, makes it easy to learn the various codes. I especially liked teaching my 8-year-old the Rosicrucian Cipher--it's simple and cool looking. The brief, historical context of each code or chipher was interesting. I bought the book on a lark, and find it worth the full price.

    4 out of 5 stars Codes,Ciphers & Other Cryptic & Clandestine Communication.......2000-06-14

Wrixon, Fred B. *Codes, Ciphers & Other Cryptic & Clandestine Communication.* Dimensions: 23.7cm x 21cm x 5.2cm. Drawings, illustrations, no photographs, table of contents, four page index, appendix, and glossary, and bibliography). The book is 704 pages in length with a reading/comprehension level of about age14 thru adult. The bibliography is extensive but contains few new sources of information.

The author utilizes David Kahn's book: The Codebreakers, for much of the historical information on Cryptology. The book opens with an excellent discussion that traces cryptology from ancient origins to the present. Most of the book is devoted to classical pencil & paper ciphers and codes. His discussion of elementary transposition & substitution ciphers is good. He also describes the one-time pad used by Soviet espionage agents. There is a brief incomplete discussion of "Cryptophotographic Techniques" that uses latent imaging, gelatin hardening and bleaching of photographs to conceal secret messages. Near the back of the book, there is a section devoted to quizzes & answers to help everyone understand the various chapters. The book closes with biographical chronologies of individuals that have contributed to the development of cryptology: Leon Battista Alberti to Herbert O. Yardley.

I did notice, however, one error in the chapter on Steganography under the subtitle invisible inks. The author, on page 476, states that the handkerchief, carried by Nazi saboteur George Dasch, contained information written in secret ink that was developed by the FBI using ammonia vapor. That much is true. But the author states incorrectly that the secret ink message was written with copper sulphate. In fact, the secret ink message on the handkerchief was written with an alcoholic solution of phenolphthalein. The phantom writing appeared red or pink in color when subjected to ammonium vapor.

The author writes in a direct lucid style that reaches a wide audience. There are some mistakes, but most of them are of little significance to the over all thrust of the book. It is an excellent book for the novice trying to understand cryptology.

3 out of 5 stars Codes, Ciphers and other Cryptic.......2000-04-26

This book presents a number of Codes and Ciphers. There are several examples of the Ciphers included but in my opinion, the examples are poor and not very detailed. Unfortunately, this is a subject matter which is highly dependent on the details. There is also a large section on Codes as opposed to Ciphers. This as far as I've found is a rare thing to come across as most books will cover cryptography but not codes. A similar book would be "The Code Book" by Simon Singh, which goes into greater detail with a fewer number of ciphers including more history in relation to the ciphers.

    Book Description

From the fall of Troy to interstellar messages by way of the Underground Railroad and Captain Midnight, Secret Messages is a collection of ninety-five of the most interesting examples of code and concealed communications throughout history. Authors William S. Butler and L. Douglas Keeney have compiled a fascinating array of encrypted communications from a varied field. Many of these examples are from times of war, including the story of how a too simple code was the undoing of Benedict Arnold, and how Commander Jeremiah Denton blinked in Morse code to indicate that his North Vietnamese captors were torturing him. Others are more lighthearted, such as the creative use of hand signals by catchers and managers in modern baseball. And some selections offer a glimpse into how codes are used in everyday life, unbeknownst to most of us, in places like hospitals, police stations, and firehouses. Uncovering hidden layers, Secret Messages will amaze you with its new insights into history and how it has been shaped by cryptography. It also explores the future of encryption, where technology will enable vast amounts of information to be hidden within minuscule hosts such as human DNA, or the dot of an "i." Full of stories of human creativity and ingenuity, Secret Messages is an engaging book that will inspire and delight.

    Book Description

Rich with illustrations, this revised and updated second edition of Dress Codes systematically analyzes the meaning and relevance of clothing in American culture. Presented here in one book for the first time are theories of clothing and an up-to-date analysis of images of power and authority, gender, seduction (the sexy look, the alluring look, the glamorous look, the vulnerable look), wealth and beauty, youth and health, and leisure and political hierarchy. Taken together, the chapters offer to the student and the general reader a complete"semiotics of clothing" in a form that is highly readable, very entertaining, and thoroughly informative. The illustrations provide fascinating glimpses into the history of American fashion and clothing-along with their antecedents in Europe-as well as a fine collection of images from the more familiar world of contemporary America.

Rubinstein has identified six distinct categories of dress in American society, upon which Dress Codes is based."Clothing signs" have only one meaning and are instituted by those in authority as required attire (police uniform, nun's attire);"clothing symbols," which have several meanings and involve individual choice (designer clothing, jewelry);"clothing tie-signs," which are specific types of clothing that indicate membership in a community outside mainstream culture (Hasidic, Amish, or Hare Krishna attire);"clothing tie-symbols," which act as a means of broader social affiliation emanating especially from fears, hopes, and dreams (Save the Earth clothing, Pro-Choice T-shirts, Madonna's crosses);"personal dress," which refers to the"I" component we bring in when dressing the public self (bowtie, dramatic, or artistic attire); and"contemporary fashion," which is the interaction between political and economic events and consumer sentiments, involving public memory.

Written in a lively and entertaining style,Dress Codes will fascinate both general readers and students interested in the history of fashion and costume, fashion design, human development, and gender studies.

5 out of 5 stars A fun way to hone your sleuthing and word skills!.......2003-07-05

My mom knows how much I love to play. When I was hospitalized to have my gall bladder removed, she gave me this book. It was so fun! I hated lying there in that cold hospital bed unable to move for 3 days (due to complications). But I had this book to play with! Though the secret messages readers have to decipher with various codes turn out to be either really corny or common knowledge trivia, the bright colorful illustrations and whimsical ideas presented in this collection of nearly two dozen different codes, are fun and exciting.
Some familiar codes include American Sign Language, Castle Code, hieroglyphics, and Morse. Readers will also find uncommon codes such as The Dancing Men code adapted from The Mystery of The Dancing Men featuring Sherlock Holmes.
Children are going to really love this book. It's fun, practical and a quick read. Kids with a penchant for solving or creating their own mysteries are going to love this collection. An answer key is included and a brief history of code making and breaking is also included.
Jeffrey A. O'Hare really did a good job with this book. I highly recommend it because of its fun, versatility and ability to inspire children to read more. As an educator, this is very important to me. I look forward to sharing this book with my students in the classroom during leisure reading and writing times.
