Very helpful.......2007-05-09
I am a convert from PageMaker, so I was already familiar with a lot of the functions in InDesign. However, the book has still been very beneficial. The examples and already finished or almost finished documents that come on the disc are great tools to learn with.
The book is easy to read, despite being written by Adobe. Sometimes the only way to learn is to buy a book written by a third party, but I've found that is not the case here. Adobe did a great job.
What about CS3?.......2007-04-21
I'm only giving it 1 star because CS3 has now been released, so the book is of modest value except for those who wish not to take advantage of the new and improved. Try taking this one to a used book store and you'll see that at "1" it's over-rated.
Aside from that, this is an excellent series of manuals, particular valuable as software publishers no longer include manuals! As they say at O'Reilly: "The book that should have been in the box."
Adobe InDesign CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-03-15
This book is extremely helpful with the Adobe InDesign program I wish I would have had it a year ago!!

Fine for the novice.......2007-09-16
Having newly come from Microsoft Publisher, In Design was a challenge. I used the Adobe manual in parallel with this one, got more out of the combination than the sum of each one by itself. Managed to produce a design in three weeks from start to finish. Friends who know the business find that a remarkably short time.
A Great Reference Desitined to Become Dog Earred.......2007-06-18
This book has helped me to execute a design item many times. It's not perfect but I've already begun to wear out the thing while my reference texts published by Adobe remain in pristine condition.
I would buy this product again.
Indesign for Mac (Visual quick start).......2007-01-05
Ok booIt is hard to find what you need.
REALLY HELPFUL!.......2006-09-29
I was used to an InDesign software from far ago, the dinosaur era. When got the newest version, was at a complete lost. This book explains in easy words EVERYTHING! Adobe's software is great, but their manuals can be used and understood by those with an IQ of 300 up. Am grateful for this book and fully recommend it.
quite boring.......2006-09-13
Technically, this will teach you how to use indesign. But it's so boring and repetitive. It's like memorizing a list.

Great step by step guide........2007-09-25
This book is highly recommended. We are using it as our class room text book. I have version CS3 and still find the book very helpful (However I would probably buy the CS3 edition if I had a choice.) This book dives right in! You are doing magazine lay out with columns, flowing text, and graphics almost immediately. It assumes a basic comfort level with computers from the outset. I had been working with In Design for 3 months before I started working with this book. I find the book takes me far beyond what I was learning on my own. There is nothing like learning through doing exercises, and the exercises are well designed. Enjoy!!
check your CS-version !.......2007-08-26
the confusing title "InDesign CS" should be "InDesign CS (version1)" to make clear that it's not for CS2
Good for the Basics.......2007-04-10
This is not a comprehensive tutorial to InDesign CS but it is a thorough introduction. The lessons are thoughtfully arranged and build upon each other and do a good job of teaching the basics but the treatment is not thorough and neither is it comprehensive. There is still much to learn. The book is helped by the inclusion of a CD which contains the needed files to complete the exercises.
The big problem is that InDesign CS is such a complex program. It is not going to be taught simply and in short order. This book will familiarize anyone who wants to learn the program but much will be left to learn.
Next Best Thing To Being There..........2007-02-09
New software, especially something as daunting as InDesign, can often intimidate a user. 'Classroom in a Book' is amazingly easy to use and answers the vast majority of questions that typically arise when one is struggling to master something as complex as this Adobe program.
I highly recommend this book as a step-by-step means to achieving an amazing degree of competence in formatting documents of any length and complexity.
Adobe Indesign Cs Classroom in a Book (Classroom in a Book).......2007-02-08
The book will teach you how to use Adobe Indesign, but it's a little tedious. You certainly have to have patience when dealing with this book.

Horrible, Horrible Book, Don't Waste your Time and/or $$$.......2007-05-14
I have been in school for a while and have used many books to teach me how to use software that I have never used before. This is by far, the most horrible book I have ever had to use. Mr. McClelland spends too much time joking in this book. Also, I hate that not all of the information is in the book since there is a CD that accompanies it. I feel that all of the information should be accessible from the book itself and the CD should just be a bonus. Also, there were many pre-made documents that they showed you how to change, but not necessarily much to show you how to go from start-to-finish. All of the MS Books were very direct and instructional. And, they almost always were able to anticipate any errors that may be made. It was easy to follow and learn from unlike this pathetic excuse for an instructional manual.
Great Mix of Lessons and Videos.......2006-12-30
This book provides the best way to learn InDesign outside of a classroom; it may even be better than that. Deke explains how his course runs, then provides helpful instructional materials and exercises that are delivered with a common-sense approach that is easy to understand.
The DVD that is included with the book was very helpful. It shows you each step of a lesson and you can replay it as many times as you wish. You won't have classroom instructors doing that. Then, after viewing the video lesson, you go to the book for a step-by-step detail on how InDesign works.
Deke's method of instruction is clear, understandable and logical. After I worked with this book I was so sold on Deke's abilities as an instructor that I bought his book on Adobe's Photoshop.
I can't give a higher recommendation; he knows how to teach and has written a tremendous book on InDesign.
This Book Is GREAT.......2006-12-29
Am a a novice to InDesign CS. I received this book on Dec 26th. By Dec 28 I had solved several problems on documents I had been working on.
I like the idea of the DVD video. I think it is great that Deke give all the short cuts. I speeds my flow and reduces my carpal tunnel pains.
The information is informative, well illustrated and on target.
If you are looking for a good book GET THIS.
Beginner to Expert with one book.......2006-11-19
We're using this book in my Page Layout class at College and it's one of the best "text books" I've ever used. Deke provides lots of extras on the CD to help visualize the steps and end results quickly. He also gives many details as you work through the lessons to get you to an expert level as quickly as possible. I'll look for the One-on-One books for future software training and especially Deke's books.
I am so happy to have found this book and DVD lesson.......2006-08-20
I have needed InDesign Training for a very long time. It is the only program the agency I work for is allowed to use, but I live in the middle of nowhere and have been unable to attend classes. This book and 2 hour DVD lesson totally has gotten me up to speed on making page layouts. I only wish I had bought it from Amazon instead of Barnes and Noble, I would have saved $15. At any rate, get this book. The best thing about it is that the author uses PRACTICAL examples for doing things. Most computer books expect you to know things already. Well, I didn't know squat. Now I do. The author runs you through simple examples, getting more and more complex with functions, until you have it down. I love that! I loved this book so much I ordered his Photoshop book too since I need to learn that program. So, if you bought InDesign CS2 and need help from the get go, GET THIS BOOK FIRST!

INDesign C2.......2007-10-10
Great instructional book. The tone of the book is not preachy but confident. It's great for beginners who are trying to switch from Quark to INDesign.
Indepth understanding.......2007-08-14
This book is chock full of good information for new designers needing to know more about the production side of the world. This book is a great reference and enlightened me on aspects I didn't even know I needed to know. I listen to David Blatner's "InDesign Secrets podcasts", and his humor and knowledge carry through in this book.
Complete Resource.......2007-04-28
Being an established professional in the graphics field, I am exposed to many publications. Over 85% of published 'how-to' publications are nothing more than a dressed-up copy of the user's manual. This book IS NOT ONE OF THEM!
Being technical oriented, yet creative versatile, I look at books beyond the flashy covers and the chosen layout. This title is one the finest books ever written on InDesign CS2. It challenges the reader with an abundance of information.
Not every operator uses InDesign CS2 the same way. This book addresses the needs of the readers. A Must Buy for the InDesign end user than needs more information than how to setup a document, and an expanded view of the rich features InDesign has to offer.
Best Reference for InDesign CS2.......2006-07-05
Real World InDesign CS2 is what the users manual should be. For example, It covers Tables which only appear in the online help for InDesign CS2. The users manual only makes reference to See the Help files. Like the previous Real World InDesign texts it is well written, easy to understand, and covers all of the functions of the software. From creating an initial layout to color management to Printing the final project Real World InDesign CS2 is the text to have. I would recommend Real World InDesign CS2 to both Novices and long-time users of InDesign. It is the one book you will refer to time and again for problem solving.
Finest InDesign desk refererence.......2006-02-26
The cover states that all features of the application are covered, and I can't claim to have discovered a gap. Each author (Kvern and Blatner) offers a deep perspective, and when they differ with one another, they say so. Thus the user gets two keen insights rather than the monolithic pronouncements so common in software books. This empowers the reader: a goal I try to achieve in my software classes. As I try to give my students enough information and methodology to make their own workflow decisions, this book does likewise. That is why I recommend this volume in my classes.
Be warned, however, that this is not a "how-to", or book of exercises. It is a reference. It is a perfect complement to my classes, but not a workbook for use during them. This gives the book usefulness well beyond the learning curve and into daily and even advanced use.
Book Description
The decision was an easy one: With a feature set that equals or exceeds its competitors and an increasingly tight integration with the other Adobe tools that are key to your workflow, InDesign cs was a no-brainer when it came time to update your page layout capabilities. Problem is, you've still got to learn the thing, and learn it well: Your job, after all, depends on it. No one understands that better than the authors of this book, who draw on their own real-world professional knowledge to deliver all the industrial-strength production techniques and timesaving tips you need to start laying out, proofing, and printing pages with InDesign cs in record time. You'll find everything you need here to successfully master InDesign's advanced page-layout tools; manage color; create, link, and unlink text frames; and run your own custom InDesign scripts. You'll also find complete coverage of all of InDesign cs' new features: an updated Story Editor, nested styles, separation previews, the Package for GoLive command, and more.

Intelligent people who can explain a complex program well.......2004-07-18
RW InDesign CS is a wonderful book. I own the previous (RW InDesign 2) version as well. Both Blatner and Kvern know InDesign well. Kvern has a slightly twisted spin on the world that makes it possible for him to make it interesting and exciting to uncover the details of InDesign. Both are always interested in helping other users in online forums. The book is meticulously designed with abundant screenshots with real world explanations.
The book covers more than the basics, with sections that simply change your perspective about the possibilities in InDesign. It is just part of my upgrade plan to always upgrade to the next version of Real World InDesign CS. I've done it twice and look forward to the next one.
Incredible Reference Book-ýBelongs on every designer's desk.......2004-07-18
This book belongs in the hands of anyone wanting to utilize InDesign to its fullest potential. There are tips and tricks throughout the book that you will not find documented anywhere else.
I had Real World InDesign 2 in my library already, but purchased Real World InDesign CS to ensure I had all of the latest tricks that Kvern and Blatner added in this edition available at my finger tips.
While this is not the type of book that most people will sit and read cover-to-cover, it easy enough to look up the precise topic you want to read more about. (If you are like me, and do read it cover-to-cover, you'll find it very entertaining as well as informative.)
In depth knowledge you get nowhere else.......2004-07-16
If you want to really get to learn InDesign from the bottom up also with its more advanced functions, this is the book you should get. Granted, it is not for beginners in the first hand, but for those of us who work with the application all the time and need to dig deeper to understand what it can do, be it nested styles, tables, master pages or whatever.
The authors have deep knowledge and insight of the application and there are no others that could share their knowledge better. It might not teach you how to do design, but it teaches you how to use and understand the application. And it give you a level of depth that no other book about InDesign does.
I have had the Real World InDesign book as a reference for when I want to have things explained so I understand them since the very first version of this book, when Ole was the only author of it. With the addition av David Blatner as a co-author also came the understanding of what QuarkXPress users might want and need to know to get started with InDesign, now that more and more of them are converting to Indesign.
That Ole works for Adobe does not mean that he is a non-critical advocate for the application. He runs his own race here and not Adobes.
The Real World InDesign CS book is the best reference book you can buy if you want real deep knowledge of the application, and not only one more manual (which the Classroom in a Book is in my opinion).

This book made me look smart at my new job.......2007-03-09
I started a new job in January and wasn't told that part of it would involve working with InDesign. Knowing nothing about that program, I immediately ordered my trusty "Dummies series" book - it's taught me everything from raising a Golden Retriever to Tarot Cards! Needless to say, the InDesign book didn't fail me. All the basics were there. The only problem was that sometimes I didn't know what to look up in the index because I wasn't sure what the process was called. Other than that, it was and continues to be a great resource!
Adequate.......2005-08-20
While this book has helped me to get up and running in Adobe InDesign, I am not overwhelmed by it as a resource. For one thing, it needs more screen pictures and clearer screen pictures. I also found several instances where knowlege was assumed - the editors has skipped to the conclusion of a task, without really explaining it. I guess that they assume most layout designers will know how, but for those more familiar with Microsoft products, that is not the case. Finally, the index at the back of the book is sorely lacking. I could not find many basic elements of the program listed there, so the index is not always much of a resource for jumping right to the area you need.
A Wealth of Tips and Knowledge.......2005-08-04
This book sits next to me all day. I read it front to back and am now using it as a reference during my projects. This book is worth it if you have or plan to purchase CS2.
Average customer rating:
- One more amazing Bible - reference that you can't miss (Adobe InDesign CS3)
- Far worth every penny and more - tremendous resource
- overall pretty good
- InDesign (the software) is great. This book is a waste of money

One more amazing Bible - reference that you can't miss (Adobe InDesign CS3).......2007-10-14
With no exception this book is other great and complete InDesign (CS3) reference from Galen Gruman and Wiley Publishing.
For whom is this book? Really, for very wide auditory of InDesign users. I can recommend this books to people who consider themselves as beginners or advanced users of this program. This books will be also helpful to any designer making the switch from Quark Xpress to InDesign. Using the side-by-side comparison of features is much faster than trying to find the answers online, because in order to look up how to do something, you have to know what it's called in InDesign. With this book, you don't.
In fact, Bibles are the most convenient form of explaining of what software does that I've ever seen.
You have all information under your hand in any time of night and day. And users of Miscosoft Vista will be very exited as book stays up-to-date.
This Bible will sit next to you all day long. You can read it front to back and use it as a reference during your projects. And this book is worth it if you have or plan to purchase CS3, upgrade to CS3 or want to know more about InDesign CS3.
This book represents an excellent value. You will find anything you wanna in this book: starting from creating frames and using tables, applying color, special effects, working with images, master pages, using grids, and guides, shapes up to small color management course and output fundamentals.
If you just start with InDesign, most likely you not familiar with such terms as "leading", "kerning", "bleeds", "slugs" or other typographical terms mean, but you won't be lost in the jargon any longer. This book will bring you on right level with fine explanations.
End of the book represents summary what we found out in whole book. Or from other hand maybe it's exactly the place to start read this book for people who just switched from QuarkXPress or PageMaker to InDesign. You can also in once to remember the most usable short cuts that will save you a plenty of time in future (in real there is 10 pages of short cuts but just start from couple and in time you will remember them all).
The most easy way to study yourself smth - just to start. Make some fake project for yourself and how to make it - this will book will tell you. And i'm sure that after a couple of projects you will feel yourself almost a pro in InDesign CS3 (previous and versions that will follow, because main part of using program you will already know as 2x2).
I advice you also to pay attention to end of book to chapter number VIII and IX. If you familiar a bit with programming you will see the true value in chapter number X.
So, if you searching for good InDesign CS3 reference, put your finger on this Bible.
Far worth every penny and more - tremendous resource.......2007-08-27
I knew very little about Indesign CS3 when I purchased this book. Easy to read, extremely well-organized and cross-referenced, this in-depth book gave me everything I need to take a document from "File-Open" to Printing production. The author writes in a clear and, surprisingly, engaging style (because long books about computer programs often work better than Narcotics to help you fall asleep). I learned priceless secrets as well as indispensable basics - I will read it again and again to pick up on more and more good, solid material that will continue to help me grow as a desktop publisher. I recommend this book without reservation!
overall pretty good.......2007-07-25
This book has been a pretty good help to me. It helped me learn the program even before I got a copy of it. It is set up for just about any level of experience with the program and is organized into labeled chapters so you can skip any content that you already know or will never use (which may happen a lot if you are not a completely serious publisher). But I think this is a good help for me and I plan to keep it and use for future references with the program.
InDesign (the software) is great. This book is a waste of money.......2007-03-30
Over 900 utterly boring pages. I skimmed the first 150 pages and had to come to the conclusion that you cannot rely on the accuracy of this book. The author lists menus such as "File > Open..." and "explains" that ' "File > Open..." opens files.'. Wow, that was really the holy grail. The ultimate conclusion.
And "File > Print" prints a document... yeah. Sure. I wouldn't know otherwise. The options are listed, but not explained. Unless you are blind, you can see the options you have. I want a book which tells me what these options do, not how many they are. I don't need this kind of "help".
In a nutshell, this book is boring as boring can be. Wasted money. My advice: put your money elsewhere.
Excellent!.......2006-02-20
The bible all InDesign users should have in their bookshelves. The best reference and recommended book for those who want to learn everything about InDesign in clear and complete explanation. Ask, and this bible would have answers.

No experience required.......2007-08-21
I am only on Chapter 4 of this book but have found so many things I love about it I wanted to write a review before I forget.
1. I appreciate that the authors explain technical terms--he does not assume that the reader comes from a publishing background. For example, in describing the character formatting controls and functions (page 81) the author defines what they mean. "Kerning field: Adjusts the space between two letters" I cannot tell you how refreshing this is for someone lacking a publishing background. Most online help and manuals would often have something like "enables you to adjust the kerning".
2. The book uses pictures appropriately to show key details to help you understand the task. I especially appreciated how he used pictures to demonstrate the effects of "fixed column width" versus no fixed column width.
3. It's great having all of the sample files on the CD, including both the completed file and the start file. This makes it so much easier to understand what the end product is for the sample.
4. The book is loaded with time-saving tips, such as how to quickly change the entire textbox font or other character properties and how to quickly select a sentence or paragraph.
5. The author gives tips for how to undo or fix common mistakes and problems.
I am learning using InDesign CS3 so there might be some features not covered in this book, but all of what I have done so far matches well with the book, so the basics do not seem to have changed.
Easy to Follow Training.......2007-03-25
I'm with a non-profit organization, and I was selected to do the publicity for our regional conference in 2008. Needed to produce a few mailers and a program that would eventually be sent to a printshop. I didn't have a clue, as how do use Adobe Indesign.
This book takes nothing for granted, and steps back to the beginner level, making it very easy to follow along during all the exercises. Includes book with lessons and CD with lesson exercises, plus how-to movies.
Great Learning Tools.......2006-10-26
If you're serious about learning InDesign this is a good place to start. It has a nice blend of basic exercises, bonus exercises, demo movies, and printed information. If you are a hands-on type learner you will enjoy and benefit from Hand-On Training. This book is exactly what I was looking for - straight forward, enjoyable, and practical.
Excellent!
Awesome InDesign Training Manual!.......2006-06-30
This book is phenomenal! After purchasing several different manuals covering the various main components of Adobe Creative Suite 2 (Illustrator CS2, InDesign CS2, Photoshop CS2 and GoLive CS2) I found myself wishing that Lynda.com published a Hands-On Training book for every component of CS2. The combination of Brian Wood's clear writing style and the included bonus exercises and demo movies made me feel like I had my own personal InDesign instructor right beside me. Everyone who wants to learn InDesign from the comfort of their own desk should have a copy of this book. I highly recommend it!
Too slow.......2006-06-20
I have bought linda books in the past and they are very good beacuse of the inclusion of quicktime movies and excersises. But I find this book too slow. The fact that you have to be 4 chapters to be able to put text in the document it's a drawback. To spend 3 chapters to tell you how to create a guide, I think it's for retards or 6th grade students. I regret spending the money on the book. I think I 'll try the Classroom in a Book CS2 since I had the previus CS1 that was good. I would not recomended for classroom beacause students will get bored. But it's a good option for non-designer people.

Great!.......2007-02-22
This is a very helpful book!!! I am using it for my Typography 1 class in college and it is making my projects so much easier because of the helpful hints and shortcuts...it is one of the best resources that I have or could ask for!
Worth it!.......2007-01-26
I bought it, I like it, I use it, it's worth it. Have read it cover to cover twice. But since this is a book about typography, I can't resist pointing out errors in that vein.
1. There is no example C with figure 7.9, page 92.
2. There is a double-hyphen on page 157 in violation of a guideline on page 158.
3. A spell check would have caught the "areis" on page 212.
4. The hyphenation break on "conservation" violates the very guideline being stated on page 157.
There are other typos, but let me move on. Biggest weakness: the book stops abruptly on p. 262. How about finishing with a wrap-up chapter of some kind? This could include summary-level checklists. Even so, I would still buy it again.
This was a gift for my son-lin-law.......2007-01-10
He received it about 2 weeks after his birthday. I haven't talked to him about how he liked it, so I can't really evaluate it. I know that he was happy to get it. It was on his Amazon gift list. I use that list almost every year for his birthday
Good Reference.......2007-01-09
This is just what I was looking for, background, clear explainations, and detailed instruction. I would look forward to any future publications by this author.
Review of InDesign Type: Professional Typography with Adobe InDesign CS2.......2007-01-09
I found this book to be an excellent resource for anyone using text in InDesign CS2. The layout was clear and the content very informative. To connect the examples to the text was confusing at times, and because the numbering was incorrect in some places, I found myself second-guessing when I was not 100% clear about what was going on.
