interesting, informative read.......2007-05-19
I couldn't put this book down. A friend lent me her copy, and I loved it so much I ordered my own before I was even finished reading it. I learned so much about health and beauty and the things around us that drag them down. I have gone on to some of the other books and topics mentioned in this one, and have significantly changed my lifestyle, due largely to the information from Kat's book. I recommend it to any woman who wants to take better care of herself, feel better, and look better. It won't just benefit you; it will benefit all those around you. A fun and easy read--it is definitely worth the money.
Good reference.......2007-05-16
Great book loaded with information on ways to get healthier and think healthier about the way we women look.Fabulous product suggestions. She never leaves you wondering how do i do that or where do i get this?
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-14
Though the first part of the book is somewhat mundane it more than compensates for it in the resouces section. James not only lists the best products for one's diet, skin care, healing specific problems, and anything having to do with good health, but she also lists stores where they may be found complete with addresses. Her listings are impressive and invaluable. The resouces section alone is well worth the price of the book. For anyone who neither reads nor understands labels, this book is a "must have."
A great book that shows health and beauty go hand in hand.......2007-02-02
Even before I read The Truth about Beauty, I already bought a lot of natural and organic products, shopped at health food stores, and used traditional Chinese medicine. But despite being generally attuned to the problems with chemicals, overly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, etc., I still had some blind spots, especially when it came to issues of "beauty." For example, with my skin I was still using the old "search and destroy" method. But this book opened my eyes, and I have had much more success since I gave that up and started following James' advice about fixing the skin from the inside out.
The book does a great job of connecting health with beauty and explains a lot of concepts that even a natural food consumer might not know a lot about. For example, I had always thought of low-carb diets as being a lot of baloney (so to speak), but the way James explains the glycemic index makes total sense. I especially like her idea of "upgrading" and the specific examples she offers, like drinking spritzers instead of soda.
The resource index is also really useful, although some of the products may seem expensive. If you shop at Wal-mart for all your food and toiletries, yes, you will pay more for natural products. But if you buy department store brands like Clinique, you will be able to find plenty within your budget. Also, I find that I use a lot fewer products in general now that I've started following the kind of simple regiment James prescribes.
All in all, I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who has beauty issues.
A life-changing book!.......2007-01-11
I had the great fortune to meet Kat James and hear her speak at the Alive! Expo in Seattle in 11/06. She is as compelling a public speaker as she is an author. She tells her own story in the book, which makes it resonate just that much more strongly. This book, simply put, has changed my life. I followed almost all of Kat's recommendations, and have used the buying guide at the back to replace many of the personal care products I used for years without thinking of the chemicals contained in them. I'm eating organic foods and have lost 25 lbs. since I read this book three months ago. I bought it for several women friends for Christmas, and they're loving it, too. I cannot recommed the book highly enough. Read more at www.informedbeauty.com

The Black Book of Hollywood Beauty Secrets.......2007-09-16
Not only was the book helpful with the beauty secrets, but I loved the sense of humour. I look forward to the next book by these authors.
Good for newbies to makeup/skincare/haircare.......2007-07-30
If you've ever read any beauty/fashion magazines on any type of a regular basis, spoken in friend circles about beauty tricks, or are over 13 and have been wearing makeup for a few years, etc. then you already know all of this. Puffy eyes: cucumber or potato slices, chilled spoons, tea bags Zits: dab of toothpaste or tea tree oil Shiny, build-up free hair: apple cider vinegar rinse
Unless you're a newbie to the beauty world or like the 40-something year old woman I met that had no idea that clear mascara can be used to groom brows and that the tanning beds were making her liver spots worse, then save your money.
no new information in my opinion.......2007-07-28
I thought this book would be entertaining with a lot of tips and tricks for making beauty fun and easy. I love makeup and going on the occassional splurge at Sephora. But I can also be happy wandering the makeup/skin care aisles of Target.
When this book is not spitting out designer labels left and right, they really don't have super secrets. Most is stuff you can find online about home treatments that you can mix together yourself. It also asked a lot of "professionals" and beauty gurus their "must haves" and what would they buy if they ONLY had 100 dollars. These people are spoiled brats in my opinion. 100 bucks could buy a heck of a lot of beauty stuff. One woman's answer when asked what she would do if she only had the 100 dollars was "first, I would cry...". This really just put the stamp of stupidity on this book. Don't waste your money!
very informative.......2007-07-08
very interesteing book, so many secrets and the ones i tried do really work-highly recommend!
Big on hype, long on snark, short on quality...save your $$.......2007-06-21
I made the mistake of actually purchasing this book. I would've taken it back if I hadn't already thrown away the receipt, that is how BAD this book is! True beauty has nothing to do with making uncharitable and jealous comments, and it seems like every sentence in this book is prefaced with "MEOW!" I do not like this current trend toward Us Magazine style cattiness and rudeness in Hollywood gossip circles, and it seems to have permeated this book something fierce. What good is attaining outer beauty if the seemingly beautiful person is unattractively rude and has caustic, mean-spirited and sarcastic stuff constantly running out of her mouth?
Another thing I found offensive about this book? The hypocrisy of one of the authors. If you look at the picture in the back of the book, you'll notice that Cindy Pearlman, is considerably fat...in fact, you could say she is OBESE...yet throughout the book she and her "new best friend" aka co-writer Kym Douglas make all sorts of hurtful cracks about large sized women. What's with all the self loathing Cindy? Still trying to fit in with the 'preps' 20 or more years after graduating high school? Still getting ready for that prom you apparently never attended? Sad...and pathetic. Get over it already.
As for the so-called beauty "secrets", do these authors think we were born yesterday? I don't buy most of that mess in this book for a New York minute! Do you honestly expect us to believe those actresses are too cheap to buy real beauty products? Please. Plus I am NOT interested in learning any of beauty secrets who women who are in the sex industry, either. Why are they glorifying strippers and pole dancers in this book? Disgusting.
As for their assessment that men are only interested in women who look like those on the "A" list...this is simply not so. How do I know? Well, I've been to Hollywood, Beverly Hills AND Malibu, so I can tell you by personal experience the STRAIGHT men there appreciate all sorts of beauty in women...and they are equally as likely to flirt with a woman with meat on her bones as he is the tall blonde size "0" waifs running around with scary Botox smiles! The true beauty "secret?" CONFIDENCE IN ONESELF...which doesn't cost one red cent!!!
Trust me, in the end, you're better off taking that money you would've spent on books of this ilk and putting it toward a fab vacation to California and really living it up, rather than living vicariously through this flimsy book with bogus beauty "secrets" you can find on any beauty website. I'm not even going to give this book to charity...it's just going directly into file 13.
Book Description
A celebrity fashion designer gives every woman the red-carpet treatment in this foolproof guide to choosing clothes that make you look fabulouswith tailor-made tips for forty-eight body types.
The average American woman is 5"4' tall, weighs 160 pounds, wears a size 14, and bears no resemblance to the typical runway model. Yet the runway model sets the standard for ideal wardrobes. Top L.A. designer Bradley Bayou has dressed women of all shapes and sizes and knows that every woman has her own natural combination of silhouette shape, height, and weight. Style is not about fitting into the size you think is sexy, it is about picking clothes that fit your body correctly and that create balance. Perfect balance is perfect style.
In The Science of Sexy, Bayou helps readers identify their silhouette shape (triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, or hourglass) and combines that information with a height/weight chart to determine which of forty-eight fitting rooms to go to in the book. Each fitting room has Bradley's specific advice for that woman on the clothes and accessories to wear and avoid, and how to create balance using color, scale, proportions, and fabric.
With a fabulous design and instructive and fun four-color illustrations throughout, The Science of Sexy takes the fear out of shopping and gives all women the gift of confidence that they deserve.

So Helpful!!!.......2007-10-05
Okay, I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about this book. After all, most of us probably think we already know what looks good on us or not, especially if we (as I do) read fashion magazines religiously. However, I was surprised by some of the advice. For instance, my "section" told me to stay away from pencil skirts. What? I LOVED pencil skirts! But I decided to live by these rules for one week and see if anyone noticed a difference. Not only did I feel better about my shape, but in one week, three unrelated people asked me if I lost weight!! So, since buying this book about three weeks ago, I have bought another edition to give as a gift, and loaned out my copy to four other women. I've photocopied my pages and taken them shopping with me. Per the advice in the book, I've decided not to worry about the tag size and instead focus on the fit. I've also taken quite a few items to the tailor, which completely transformed them and made them so much more flattering! I LOVE this book.
so worth it!.......2007-10-03
I realize there are only 4 pages per body type to explain the dos and don'ts, but its the quality not the quantity. I used the tips and share them with all my girlfriends, family, coworkers - everyone! and the response is fantastic. So many little mistakes we never knew we did, yet are SO easy to fix. I love the glossary in the back for the not so fashionistas, it makes the vocabulary much easier. Buy this book and have yourself a science of sexy party with your girlfriends!
Some good info but...........2007-09-20
It had good info on how to dress for your body type, however half of the book is a break down of all the different body types. So half the book is useless to me, becuase I only need the summary on MY body type. I saw the book on the TYRA show, I like it though, very informative.
Excellent source of information for all figure types.......2007-09-12
As a women's clothing retailer, I found this book to be "coffee table material" in my shop. I leave a tape measure on the book to invite women to investigate the contents. So many women have difficulty selecting the right clothing for their figure types. This book offers the best visual and written information that is easily understood and appreciated. Bravo to the writers. I have a library full of books on the subject and have never seen one that is so informative, well written and assists all figure types and personalities.
Enjoyable and helpful read.......2007-07-27
I really got excited when I saw this book. It looked like it had lots of photos and covered a topic with which I am very concerned. What I found was an interesting book that did help me determine my body type (I was always confused about whether I was an inverted triangle or a rectangle - I'm a rectangle) and offered a few tips to help dress in a style more flattering to me.
I thought he offer useful fashion tips to help address each body's assets and how to highlight them without drawing attendion to its "flaws". I also like that he offered celebrities who shared that body type - it made it a little easier to visualize how certain fashions work or don't work on that type.
I think my biggest complaint is that I wish it had more photos, especially photos of the celebrities who shared the body types listed in fashions that work or don't work for them. That would have been really helpful. Especially since some of the plus size celebrities don't usually get included in typical magazines "week in fashion" reviews. I also would have liked it if the author could have included more than one example of celebrities who fit the various body types.
Overall I like this book and would recommend it to others.
Book Description
Dressing the Man is the definitive guide to what men need to know in order to dress well and look stylish without becoming fashion victims.
Alan Flusser's name is synonymous with taste and style. With his new book, he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of men's clothes with his signature wit and elegance to address the fundamental paradox of modern men's fashion: Why, after men today have spent more money on clothes than in any other period of history, are there fewer well-dressed men than at any time ever before?
According to Flusser, dressing well is not all that difficult, the real challenge lies in being able to acquire the right personalized instruction. Dressing well pivots on two pillars -- proportion and color. Flusser believes that "Permanent Fashionability," both his promise and goal for the reader, starts by being accountable to a personal set of physical trademarks and not to any kind of random, seasonally served-up collection of fashion flashes.
Unlike fashion, which is obliged to change each season, the face's shape, the neck's height, the shoulder's width, the arm's length, the torso's structure, and the foot's size remain fairly constant over time. Once a man learns how to adapt the fundamentals of permanent fashion to his physique and complexion, he's halfway home.
Taking the reader through each major clothing classification step-by-step, this user-friendly guide helps you apply your own specifics to a series of dressing options, from business casual and formalwear to pattern-on-pattern coordination, or how to choose the most flattering clothing silhouette for your body type and shirt collar for your face.
A man's physical traits represent his individual road map, and the quickest route toward forging an enduring style of dress is through exposure to the legendary practitioners of this rare masculine art. Flusser has assembled the largest andmost diverse collection of stylishly mantled men ever found in one book. Many never-before-seen vintage photographs from the era of Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, and Fred Astaire are employed to help illustrate the range and diversity of authentic men's fashion. Dressing the Man's sheer magnitude of options will enable the reader to expand both the grammar and verbiage of his permanent-fashion vocabulary.
For those men hoping to find sartorial fulfillment somewhere down the road, tethering their journey to the mind-set of permanent fashion will deliver them earlier rather than later in life.

Great manual to test your sartorialism!.......2007-09-19
Great manual to test your sartorialism!
lot's of examples and illustrating pictures. Nice hardcover tablebook.
fantastic.......2007-06-21
This book is amazing, it has everything you could possibly want to know about dressing a man.
Beautiful. Classic Manual...Comes Across As A Little Dated.......2007-05-23
This book falls into one of my most favorite genres of such; Men's fashion, grooming, style manuals. This one is beautifully photographed with many, many tried and true guidelines for men who wish to appear well dressed. A good number of the photos are from the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 40's and 50's. This was a time when many of the rules for fashionable men were firmly established. On the other hand, there have been many cultural changes in how American and European men approach fashion and style. For these men (of which I am one) portions of Mr. Flusser's book will seem dated and irrelevant. I found this true of the section that addresses a man and his accessories; especially jewelry! The best thing about Mr. Flusser's style chronicle is that is does establish the ground rules for what is appropriate for business, casual and formal wear. One who is so inclined may veer from the foundations to find one's own sense of style. I enjoy this book and I reccomend it to anyone wanting to establish a wardrobe foundation. Worth the price.
I fully enjoy this book. I recommend it.
Excellent with one caveat about the format..........2007-04-18
All of Mr. Flusser's books are superb and make reliable guides for anyone interested in classic men's dress (as opposed to fleeting fashion trends). I do have one critical observation to make however. Having recently picked up a used copy of the authors first book Making The Man: The Insiders Guide to Buying and Wearing Men's Clothes and having browsed through all of his books since one thing has become very apparent to me. A good 75% or more of the information in his books is simply recycled for each publication for the simple reason that the fundamentals of classic men's dress doesn't change or date...that's why it's considered "classic". In the introduction to his second book Clothes and the Man he says outright "With the publication of my first book, Making the Man, I thought I had answered most of the questions men asked about dressing." and indeed he had. For this reason I am surprised that the author hasn't simply published an updated edition of Making the Man every few years with the information on the specific retail stores updated. The real reason probably comes down to the fact that large hardcover books make more money for the publishers than oversized trade paperbacks do. Flusser's first book was a deserved success but each new one has been more lavish and pricey than the last...from Making the Man published back in 1981 as a $10 oversized trade paperback to the latest one, Dressing the Man weighing in as a $50 hardcover.
There was a period in the 60's and 70's where the U.S. seemed to be entering a sort of golden age of quality oversized paperback publications, perhaps taking after France where almost everything (even bestsellers like the Harry Potter books) are published only in paperback. The books (and I have many of them) were solid, printed on good acid-free paper and light enough to carry on the bus or subway to work. We seem to have headed back to the point where hardcovers are seen as prestigious and the bigger, heavier and more expensive the better. This book is full of the same useful information that all of the authors books are but his first one, Making the Man, (along with The Indispensible Guide to Men's Clothing by Josh Karlen) remain the most concise, straightforward and compact of my men's dress references and therfore my favorites.
Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion.......2007-04-14
This was just the book I needed when I decided to update my wardrobe after fifteen years on neglect. Perfect for learning or re-learning the basics.

Fantastic Style!.......2007-10-04
This little book packs inside all the information that can be found in most of the other style books. The author gives you easy to understand, no filler or fluff, straight-up style guidelines, suggestions and the reasoning behind her information. Plus, she gives websites and stores where the things she mentioned can easily be found. Keep in mind, however, that she does make mention of several lines that do not have stores outside many major markets and do not offer web sales. Also, some of the price points may be unrealistic if your favorite shopping experience is at Wal-Mart. All in all, a very good purchase.
First Rate!!!!!.......2007-09-22
This is among the very best for timeless advice on what is fashion style and elegance. There are clear guidelines and clear rationals. It is exceptionally well written. I found her short section of advice to petites to be better than any book I have read . In this section she succintly makes 27 points on how to dress TALL. This book is the real deal.
A good wake-up call.......2007-08-27
After reading this book, I gave myself a good talking to about my closet. Now I've found a tailor, had all my falling hems fixed, skirt hems adjusted and favorite items tailored to fit me better. More importantly I got rid of all the things that no longer fit me, are no longer in style, or are just plain unattrative. What a relief!
So glad I was given this book. I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe without doing any shopping!
Like this one.......2007-08-18
I read this book cover to cover. It is very informational for someone like me who has a hard time putting outfits together and seeing what I need and what I don't need. I like the detailed advice on the difference between cheap and well made. Also the tips on where to find well made things at a better price. I didn't find my body shape in her descriptions but at 5'11" that's not easy to do. I wish someone would write a book for tall women. I am still giving it 5 stars though because I found the rest of the book very informative.
A book for the "little people" out there...........2007-08-12
One reviewer mentioned that Kendall Farr is condescending toward her audience. There are remarks such as "now _you_ have a fashion stylist of your very own" that is a little reminiscent of Fairy Godmother...I wanted tips, not someone to address me as if I were some "Clueless" project.
One hallmark of being condescending is that she repeatedly uses words that fly over my head... "Am I just a fashion dummy? I thought I knew something..." I keep saying to myself as I flip through the book and futily Google words that don't seem to have a solid definition. Farr says, "Make sure you choose styles with pintucking, ruching, bomber style, motocross style, nipped at the waist..." It goes on and on and on, page after page until I feel like she assumes we all know the fashion lingo that she uses daily. A glossary would have been merciful.
I do match body type B and am still foggy on what she wants me to do. Very wordy, atmospheric suggestions with no pictures, no diagrams, no sketches... just 4 figures of women with "the look" that I should be trying to achieve.
I do appreciate how she targets the pitfalls of fashion and how she encourages only shopping for a few pieces at a time to make sure you have the right fit, material, and comfort level. I also appreciate how she sort of says to dress your age (ie, "Goodbye Hello Kitty t-shirts"). I am 29 and having a rough time with finding fashion that suits the age... Shopping at American Eagle or Abercrombie or even Old Navy leaves me feeling, uh, just not put together well, and sometimes I even feel like I must be manifesting a lack of maturity by my fashion choices. So I can handle her prompts for increasing sophistication, and I have had luck finding things that match her descriptions in stores such as TJ Maxx, Maurices, and even at the local thrift shop. So I thank her for that.
Oh-- and if you want help sorting your closet, she has good tips. She eerily starts reminding me of a person with obsessive compulsive disorder by the end of the chapter, but the first half got me into gear and my closet is in great shape now.
I own the Lucky Style Shopping Manual as well, and have read both of these books practically word for word. Lucky makes sure that you understand every word with pictures of beautiful clothing ensembles, diagrams including terminology, etc. But I'm still glad to have heard Kendall Farr's approach. I probably won't keep her book, but it was a good one-time read. I'll be keeping Lucky forever.

Did not live up to expectations.......2007-09-16
Things I liked: The way this book showed more than one way to wear a piece. I also liked how it identified items that you should splurge on. Of course both of these things can be found in any magazine or online at little to no cost.
Things I didn't like: The book doesn't really address different body types, which plays a large role in what styles you buy. It also doesn't say how many of any certain item you should have. Should I have 1 suit or 20??
Overall, if you want a book on style I would buy the Luck Shopping Manuel. That book is worth the money!!
In Style: Instant Style.......2007-09-01
Really enjoyed this book ....it was nice to know as I age I can still look stylish without looking like I was dressing to young. Thanks for the tips on keeping in style for seniors.
The first book is better.......2007-04-24
I was disappointed with this book. I have the first In Style book and I really liked it so was looking forward to this. There was very little variety between the different styles shown and all the clothes were very formal, especially the winter weekend outfits were often more formal than I would wear even to the office. There is only one style of clothes showed and this book did not inspire me.
Fun and Helpful.......2007-03-04
I really love this book. It gave me some great general guidelines to follow in addition to some suggestions for really cute outfits. It is a good combination of finding your own style and pushing you to try new things.

Great book, purchased as gift.......2007-10-11
I've been doing these facial exercises for several years now and recently purchased for a friend that lost alot of weight. I always receive compliments on how young I look given my age and I'm sure it's the result of this book. I confess I don't do them every single day but fairly often as the mood strikes and have seen results. I highly recommend these facial exercises and this book.
Amazing.......2007-10-02
I cannot say enough. After chemo my always previously youthful over 55 skin had sagged, bagged and wrinkled to a disappointing degree. I could not believe that just 7 days could possibly make a difference, but I had to try it. All I can say is "WOW"! My jaw line is firmer than ever and those awful new wrinkles are a lot less defined. I also love that now I can express myself in so many new ways, or had forgotten, because I am in touch with my face from the inside!
Very Good!.......2007-09-24
This book is really good. I've been practicing the exercises for 10 days, and I can really see a difference. The overall look of my skin has improved. My face looks less tired and with a nice glow.
The only thing that could be improved about the book is the explanations. Sometimes you can get confused as how to perform the movement correctly.
Still, my opinion about the exercises is very positive. I highly recommend facercise.
Outstanding.......2007-09-21
HI! This is Tree Feller's Office Manager: Carole Maggio is a genius with an unfailing sense of perspective and very funny all at once. The exercises work to produce the desired results. Extremely useful after chemo therapy when everything seems to sag prematurely and you want to be happy about your situation, but your face is, well, hanging down. I think I will keep this up for ever, since, I seem to be getting results on droopy areas that seem to run in the family... i.e., these were'nt exactly new, but they sure have improved to better than before! Very exciting. Thanks so much to Carole for making faces in front of a camera so the rest of us could benefit. Oh, and pay close attention to those pictures... her example may take more mind over matter than it seems after the beginner's luck, honeymoon phase passes. Again, she is a genius!
WOW-Facercise is the Fountain of Youth in a Book.......2007-06-20
The thrill of being in control of your appearance and not subject to time is the gift of knowledge that Carole Maggio gives every dedicated student in this book. I saw results in a couple of days, first as my eyes widened and next my chin line began to firm, all this and much more happened within the first 5 days. As I continued to do the Facercise Exercises my face continued to firm, tone and take on a more radiant appearance. I also had TMJ before using these exercises, that is now gone.
The exercises are clear, concise and easy o follow. Carole is straight forward and helps you cut the time down it takes to do the exercises with her tips. I have also used Carole's other products-DVD's, CD's and her skin care products--which have helped my skin even more. Like the exercises they are targeted and precise, so you use only a few products to have good skin without spending a fortune. With Facercise there is NO NEED for surgery, ever!
My next step is to get a privae lesson designed just for me -on the exercises-with Carole or one of the individuals she has trained that are in different cities around the country, even in Hawaii. This will take me to the next level, so I can build on what I have learned in the Facercise Book.
Carole Maggio Facercise: The Dynamic Muscle-Toning Program for Renewed Vitality and a More Youthful Appearance (Revised, Updated)
Thank goodness for this Wonderful Book,it has shown me that I am in control over my looks and that I can "bend time the other way"!

Compared to Milady's newest edition ..........2007-01-12
this book is MUCH better. The new edition deleted a LOT of the info from this edition ... guess what? The state board test still asks questions from this book! The new book has color pictures and notes in the margin. BIG DEAL! This edition of this book has helped me pass most of my tests in class. Without it, I would have done much worse. I keep it as reference. Milady, what were you THINKING when you brought out the new edition???? Put the info back into the new edition!!!!
Inaccurate and missleading.......2003-05-03
Working through this book on a skin care course was very frustrating. The medical terms used were inaccurate and often contradictory.
Althought the basic skin care isues were dealt with efficiently the anatomy and physiology references were not consistent with current medical text books.
This publisher has many better books. Avoid this one.
Great text!.......2003-01-08
This book is very thorough, up-to-date, and informative. I found it easy to read and follow, and the contents pages are very well-labeled, making it easy to find the desired information quickly. I would highly recommend this text to anyone looking to learn new skills or brush up on old skills.
So you want to learn about skin care, eh?.......2002-06-18
I also used this book as a text in Aesthetics School - and at the time, I didn't appreciate it as much as now - when I'm working in the field. I find myself going back and reviewing what I may have missed the first time.
This book has got it all!
- How to Portray a Professional Image (you'd be amazed how many don't know this! yikes...=0) )
- A History of Skin Care and Cosmetics
- Bacteriology
- Sterilization & Disinfection for salon safety
- Anatomy & Physiology
- Disorders of the Skin & Special Procedures
- Ingredient & Product Analysis
- Nutrition & Health of the Skin
- Client Consultation & Skin Analysis
- Massage Techniques
- and more....
I have the '99 version and found that it has helpful and effective to answer most questions that I may have had.
Sure, there are a few errors that can easily be modified - but they are not worth missing this book over!
Very Comprehensive and easy to tackle. I recommend!
update the book.......2002-01-24
This textbook is practically the only standard textbook that can be utilized by students preparing to become estheticians. However, the book needs to be brought up to current standards. Do not just print a new edition without updating the information, this stifles the profession!

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book that's full of practical ideas!.......2006-08-04
I've never been a big makeup wearer, but as I've hit my 30's, I've become more interested in wearing makeup to enhance my look. I bought Kashuk's book last year, and it's been great!
The book is extremely practical, and Kashuk walks the reader through each and every step in doing makeup application. She also includes many close-up photos so you can see exactly what she is doing and really learn her techniques. To make it even better, the book also includes a DVD where you can see Kashuk at work. I've pulled the DVD out several times over the past year to brush up on the techniques.
Kashuk also breaks things down for the reader so you see exactly how she applies each product. After covering all of the various steps in the makeup process in individual chapters, she then devotes an entire chapter to showing how a made-up face comes together step by step.
While Kashuk does use beautiful models and actresses as her subjects, what I like is that she emphasizes bringing out what's unique about each individual. She also shows many variations and color options; several times, she'll use the same model and show two different looks so you can see these options.
Overall, it's a great book! I recently bought Bobbi Brown's Beauty and it doesn't hold a candle to this one.
Wonderful Guide For All Ages and Skill Levels.......2006-01-27
In the 70's I did a lot of make-up on customers in the salon I worked in. One thing I always told them that the trick was to make people notice the difference in them but not admire their make-up. Imagine my delight to find Sonia has this same philosphy. On the DVD she talks about women being taught, another "thing" of mine. Women are sold all sorts of things but never taught the best way to use them. This book and DVD do just that, they teach. There is something for all skill levels and ages. Young girls just starting out to those of use who are more mature in our beauty can find some new trick. Even though you know Sonia has her own line of products she never pushes them, a real plus to my way of thinking. I have already tried three new ways to apply my make-up and I am pleased with the results. Sonia "rocks" on all levels and you will not be disappointed in this book/DVD combo. Not get out the colors and play!
Very basic.......2005-02-19
I was looking for more advanced makeup techniques. This book is for only everyday casual makeup. I would not recommend it to people who need more than just the basics.
Excellent book and video combination!!!.......2004-09-27
This book is a totally refreshing approach to makeup. In the style of Bobbi Brown, Sonia Kashuk encourages women to feel beautiful no matter what they look like. Her approach to makeup is natural, but does give you a few tricks on achieving certain looks (i.e. the smoky eye). She also is a little bit more relaxed regarding "makeup rules". Amazingly enough, the best part of the book is the video! I have bought many books on makeup (Bobbi Brown, Kevyn Aucoin, Linda Mason) and I have never learned so many new and completely natural tricks and techniques than from Sonia's video, it is amazing!!! I truly reccomend this book if you want to learn how to look perfect but not "made up".
Best Makeup How To Book, Ever!.......2004-09-10
I recently bought Bobbi Brown's book "Beauty Evolution". It's fine but not exceptional. But, Sonia Kashuk's "Real Beauty" IS
EXCEPTIONAL! I had the chance to view it at Borders and I could kick myself for not buying this before. I love the idea of the bonus DVD (you get to see real application which is so essential). No matter how detailed a book is, it's easier to learn the steps from a video. The advice is for real life women to look like themselves but better. I'm ordering this today and hope many of you will also.
