Book Description
Alex Cross' family is in terrible danger--at the same time that his new job with the FBI brings him the scariest case of his career. A team of kidnappers has been snatching successful, upstanding men and women right before their families' eyes--possibly to sell them into slavery. Alex's knowledge of the D.C. streets, together with his unique insights into criminal psychology, make this mindbending case one that only he can solve--if he can just get his colleagues to set aside their staid and outdated methods. With unexpected twists and whiplash surprises, this is another brilliantly irresistible novel from America's bestselling suspense writer.

Patterson is always a 5 in my book........2007-07-21
Once again I was very happy with Patterson. He is a masterful story teller.
Great reading.......2007-07-03
Read in order. All Alex Cross novels should be read in order. This one was exciting.
It's OK.......2007-05-31
It's entertaining. The main character, Alex Cross, just has to much focus put on him. He's almost made into a superstar instead of a cop. Too much to be believable. The side stories of his personal life & children seem to be added fluff. The end leaves itself open for continuation. By far, not one of Patterson's best works.
ALEX CROSS FANS (JAMES PATTERSON) "THE BIG BAD WOLF".......2007-04-11
THIS BOOK IS A FANTASTIC PAGE TURNER. ONCE I START AN ALEX CROSS NOVEL. I CAN'T PUT IT DOWN. JAMES PATTERSON IS MY FAVORITE (MALE)AUTHOR. "BIG BAD WOLF" DOES NOT DISAPPOINT YOU, FROM THE FIRST PAGE, YOU ARE CAPTURED. THE SUSPENSE AND STORY LINE KEEP YOU TURNING PAGES UNTILL YOU FINISH THE BOOK OR IT FALLS OUT OF YOUR HAND BECAUSE YOU'VE FALLEN ASLEEP. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

Book Description
The 13 personality types that do the most harm when given power in organizations are exposed in this book. These insidious types harm their employees and employer intentionally. They have evaded exposure until the author's undercover research brought them and their tactics to light in this book.
If you report to an incorrigibly bad boss, this book tells you how to save your career from ruin. If you're searching for a job, it tells you how to identify the worst kinds of bad bosses during an interview. And if you're an employer with managers working in your organization, this book will open your eyes to some of the harm that can be done without your knowledge if you're unaware that you've employed these types.
Customer Reviews:
This book can be helpful.......2007-08-02
This book would help a lot if your boss/manager falls into one of the categories. It is hard if they fall into multiple categories. Mine just does not like me even though I do excellent work, my peers like me as do all the employees of the company. Since I only have 5 years to retire I am between a rock & a hard place. She does have a chapter at the end to explain how you can give yourself a percentage of the time your manager is a bad boss and see if you can live with that percentage. Mine was 30% which is somewhat tolerable.
Who's Afraid Of The Big Bad Boss?.......2007-03-10
I have recently received this book and am in the process of reviewing it. From what I have read thus far, it is very practical especially with my current job. I plan to share it with others.
A Must-Have For Victims of Workplace Abuse.......2007-02-03
This book is a godsend for people who have been targeted for workplace abuse by a bully boss. Whether you are just beginning to put a name to the nightmare you've been experiencing, or a little further in your recovery process and trying to figure out how to interview for a new job so you don't end up with a bully boss again, this gives real, practical help and valuable information.
Employee strategies for surviving your boss.......2006-08-30
Reviewed by William E. Cooper for Reader Views (8/06)
Have you ever had one of those bosses, one where you wonder where they came from or how they got where they are? We all have at one time or another. Well, here's a great book about how to recognize what they are and how to deal with or survive them. Ms. Haight describes 13 different types of poor boss, the characteristics of each, and some good strategies for the employees. As a retired Chief of Police, it was part of my job to ensure a great working environment, one where employees could grow and flourish. We succeeded, largely in part to the employees themselves and what they had and did contribute.
While it is unfortunate such a book needs to be written, Ms. Haight has done a remarkable job with her research and details. She gives her readers the insight to recognize which is which, then the alternatives available to them. The people who ought to read this book first are the bosses described in it. Failing that, it is a clear, articulate read, certainly to be read by virtually every employee.
Well done Ms. Haight.
The best book out there for working with or staying away from a bad boss.......2006-05-09
I bought this book because it was recommended via the Washington Post. This book has been invaluable to me, especially in finding a new position in the IT industry. Ms. Haight gives you warning bells when you hear certain phrases coming out of a hiring managers mouth, and what questions to ask to be positive this person isn't going to be a devil of a manager for you. Buy this book because otherwise you might be going into (pun intended) a hell of a job!

Customer Reviews:
I find it useful.......2007-03-23
As an advertising copywriter, I find this book extremely useful. I'm not looking for obscure information. I'm looking for a quick way to find comprehensive lists of items and/or words pertaining to a given subject. This book does just that, and does it well. I'm keeping it alongside my thesaurus and books of quotations as a helpful tool for discovering the intersections of two or more thoughts. As a reference of this kind, I'm giving the book four stars.
From the Author.......2007-01-16
Hi. I wrote this book. I wrote introductory paragraphs (blurbs) for each of the 1000 lists, but the publisher removed them. They would have added so much for the readers. I was also appalled when I saw all the added white space in the galleys, which "cheapens" the book while fattening it up. I did not condone either of these and I apologize to my readers. I spent a lot of time working on this book; it was a labor of love.
Not quite what I expected.......2007-01-11
The book is just basically lists of things. I bought it for a gift and was hoping it was informational and colorful. There are no pictures. The text is large so it doesn't really list nearly everything in the universe.
Not at all what I expected.......2006-12-28
This book was not what I anticipated. I purchased it as a gift for my trivia-loving dad for Christmas hoping he could spend hours purusing through. Although he could have spent hours as the book is so large, it would have been quite boring for him, I'm afraid. It truly is a book of list after list after list of miscellaneous things. Not a sit down and enjoy reading type of book. No paragraphs or questions or chapters, only pages of lists. I was very disappointed with the lack of description on Amazon about the book from the start.
Disappointing.......2006-12-15
When I ordered this book, I expected it to be big and packed with interesting, entertaining and obscure information. At 640 pages, it is big, but it is far from being packed with information. The lists are spread out very sparsely and crudely on each page. A typical page holds a mere 116 words instead of the average of 400 or 500 words that a typical book page holds. In the introduction, this book compares itself to Roget's Thesaurus. A typical word count on a page of Roget's Thesaurus is 518 words. At 1316 pages, Roget's Thesaurus gives you 681,688 words, compared to 74,240 words in this book. Roget's Thesaurus has a great index; this book has no index. Roget's Thesaurus (6th Edition) costs $14.93 in hardcover from Amazon; this book costs $16.47 in soft cover. Which is the better buy? The irony is that Roget's Thesaurus is edited by the same editor as this book!
A brief survey of the lists included in this book shows them to be far from comprehensive. Charles de Gaulle complained about how hard it was to govern a country (France) with 265 cheeses. How many cheeses does this book list? A mere 128. The list of 'Disney Characters, First 100' fails to mention Peter Pig, who was Donald Duck's sidekick in his first cartoon appearance in The Little Red Hen. 'Book Types' is missing palimpsest. 'Parasite Types' is woefully inadequate, and is missing obvious ones like the botfly and the Guinea worm. The military is sadly neglected with no lists for basic items such as tanks or landmines. Under 'Parliament Countries', Canada is missed. A list of chess openings and chess champions would have been welcome. 'Pasta Shapes and Types' is missing cavatappi. Etc. Etc. If you want a book that you can study so as to be well prepared for trivia games or contests, this isn't it. Basic lists like the ten highest waterfalls or the ten longest rivers are not there. This book looks like it was thrown together quickly. Not only is it short on information, the information it does provide is presented in a plain, bland manner, not much better than a bunch of words pecked off on an old manual typewriter and arranged in columns of 4.
There are some good things in this book, such as 'Nixon's Enemies List' and 'Snoopy's Siblings', but not nearly enough to make up for its shortcomings. The idea of this book is a good one, but a lot more work needs to be done to make it entertaining, definitive and worth the money it costs.

Veteran newsman and Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert is known for his direct and unpretentious style and in this charming memoir he explains why. Russert's father is profiled as a plainspoken World War II veteran who worked two blue-collar jobs while raising four kids in South Buffalo but the elder Russert's lessons on how to live an honest, disciplined, and ethical life are shown to be universal. Big Russ and Me, a sort of Greatest Generation meets Tuesdays with Morrie, could easily have become a sentimental pile of mush with a son wistfully recalling the wisdom of his beloved dad. But both Russerts are far too down-to-earth to let that happen and the emotional content of the book is made more direct, accessible, and palatable because of it. The relationship between father and son, contrary to what one would think of as essential to a riveting memoir, seems completely healthy and positive as Tim, the academically gifted kid and later the esteemed TV star and political operative relies on his old man, a career sanitation worker and newspaper truck driver, for advice. Big Russ and Me also traces Russert's life from working-class kid to one of broadcast journalism's top interviewers by introducing various influential figures who guided him along the way, including Jesuit teachers, nuns, his dad's drinking buddies, and, most notably, the late New York Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, whom Russert helped get elected in 1976. Plenty of entertaining anecdotes are served up along the way from schoolyard pranks to an attempt to book Pope John Paul II on the Today Show. Though not likely to revolutionize modern thought, Big Russ and Me will provide fathers and sons a chance to reflect on lessons learned between generations. --Charlie Williams
Book Description
Tim Russert is perhaps the most admired man in television news. As NBC's senior vice president and Washington bureau chief, he has helped shape the way today's news is reported and analyzed. As producer and moderator of Meet the Press, he has created and sustained the longest running TV news program of all time with panache and dedication. And as the anchor of The Tim Russert Show, he has garnered a huge and growing fan base with his quick wit and straight-talking candor. And every Tim Russert fan knows that Tim's #1 hero, hands down, is his dad--Big Russ.
BIG RUSS & ME offers a charming, down-to-earth look at Russert's roots, growing up a hometown guy in working-class Buffalo in the 1950s. From the indelible bond that links him to his father, to the lessons learned from his old-fashioned Catholic upbringing, from his passion for the Buffalo Bills, to the importance of patriotism in everyday life, Russert's reflections hit the very epicenter of American values.
Rich with personal anecdotes and Russert's easygoing style and straight-talking charm, BIG RUSS & ME will be embraced by his myriad fans--and will delight dads across the country on Father's Day and for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
FANTASTIC STORY.......2007-07-19
TIM RUSSERT IS ONE OF THE MOST KNOWLEDGABLE POLITICAL ANALYSTS EVER.
HE IS ALSO A GREAT AUTHOR OF THIS FANTASTIC, HEART WARMING STORY OF A FATHER AND SON'S TRUE RELATIONSHIP. "WISDOM OF OUR FATHERS" WAS A GREAT READ ALSO. TIM: WRITE MORE!
Big Russ and Me: Father and Son Lessons of Life.......2007-07-16
I recieved the book as promised..in "like-new" condition and it was delivered in the time frame promised. I bought the book for my 90 yr. old Dad to read while he traveled to his bithplace and towns he lived in in Montana with my older brothers. Am sure they had thier own stories to share with one another! ~~ dsquire~~
The Father with the One-Liners .......2007-06-29
Imagine going through your life and professional career leaning on your father's one-liners. Tim Russert describes his life and around every corner he calls his father. His father undoubtedly picks up the phone and throws out one of his famous one-liners. Russert uses that one-liner on TV the next day to boost his career. There are good thoughts in this book about teachings that every child should learn. I liked Russert's thoughts on teachers and how children have lost respect for them. Yet, I am sure that is what every generation has thought about their children compared to their own childhood. I wouldn't expect anything deep and provide from this book, unless you are looking for a couple of good one-liners.
ONE lesson of life: to be loyal to your friends!!!!.......2007-05-20
Mr. Don Imus helped you promote this book and was a great friend of yours. Where were you in Imus' hour of need? I am extremely disappointed.
As a result of the way you handled that situation, I will no longer be buying any of your books nor will I watch you on television, and that includes your show.
A Great Father & Son Story.......2007-05-04
I absolutely loved this book and could not put it down. I loved how Russert interwove the antecdotes his father taught him throughout his life and made them relevant to the decisions and actions he has displayed through his youth and into adulthood. Russert understood growing up in Buffalo that his father was a hard-working man who might not have been able to spend a lot of time with him, but made the time they did spend together valuable. It was so typical of the times and Russert understood that and took that work ehtic with him into as a grown man.
They have a very special relationship and it shows now in the relationship Russert has with his own son. I love the stories about Tim working for the Buffalo Sanitation department all the way up to his meetings with the Pope. I was sad when this book ended because I wanted to hear more of his wonderful stories between him and his father and some of his NBC stories.

Chandler-light.......2006-09-16
This book is a good sequil to The Big Sleep, and is much easier to read. You can picture Bogart (albeit 6 foot tall and 190 lbs) trouncing around southern California in search of the missing Carmen Sternwood, with Bacall having a bit part as sister Vivian. Parker is faithful to the characters, and does a nice job. This was a fun read.
Sequel to "Big Sleep" 50 years later: fun and true to form Philip Marlowe !! .......2005-10-10
We really admire Parker for having the knowledge and creativity to "dream" up a new Philip Marlowe some fifty years after the original "Big Sleep" {1939} was published. We may be influenced by having just recently read Chandler's original first novel (so it was fresh in our mind), but we thought Parker did a great job. First, his use of literal quotation from the original made an effective prologue as well as effective transitions for the plot line that continued in his sequel. Second, his replication of Marlowe, with which he had prior experience in finishing Chandler's last work, Poodle Springs {to which Chandler only contributed the first four chapters}, was so credible we barely missed the masterful prose of the series creator.
In the story, the younger of (now deceased) General Sternwood's daughters, Carmen, is missing from a sanitarium to which she was committed as part of the outcome of "Sleep". Her sister Vivian, with whom Marlowe eventually became infatuated enough to bed, wants her found, but turned to another of her friends from the first book, Eddie Mars, to find. Meanwhile Norris the butler hires Marlowe to do the same, and ironically he and Eddie form an unlikely alliance at times to pursue matters. Before it's over, a scheme to make a millionaire out of the sanitarium founder, in cohorts with a wealthy land baron recluse, is uncovered; as is the perpetrator of a couple more killings along the way. Naturally the urbane but dogged Marlowe finds time in between drinking, smoking, and wowing attractive women, to unravel all and ride off into the sunset as a hero.
Some might quibble that Parker is a mediocre substitute for Mr. Chandler, but who might be up to the task of stringing wordcraft in that author's stead? We found Parker's plot quite entertaining in its own merits and his ability to credibly bring Marlowe back to life after fifty years quite remarkable. We enjoyed the book immensely, and found it no unworthy companion to his main man Spenser. Indeed, we commend this book to Chandler and Marlowe devotees!
Good, but not best, by Parker..........2002-07-24
If you know have ever read a book by R.B. Parker you will find yourself in a familiar environment in this book. Parker sets himself a brave task in writing a sequel to Raymond Chandler's "The Big Sleep" and succeeds in pulling it off superbly. Parker is one of the rare modern writers who still believe that characters can have principles, and live by them even in extreme circumstances. Although this is not Parker's best work, I still recommend this book in which, in my opinion, Parker surpasses one of the legends of detective fition, Raymond Chandler.
The Big Almost........2001-08-08
Robert B. Parker comes the closest to the attitude of Phillip Marlowe. Stuart Kaminsky writes his Toby Peters stories more for laughs. Andrew Bergman (The Big Kiss-Off of 1944) had flashes where he nailed the speech, but was more in keeping with Spillane overall. William Nolan (The Marble Orchard) copies some of the dialogue- and I do mean copies- in his enjoyable Chandlerian mystery. And there are others, myriad others. But none of them get it quite right.
Neither does Parker, but he comes the closest. He matches the world-weariness, the cynicism and the reluctant romanticism, finding the knight in tarnished armor that is Marlowe. Yes, he very nearly matches the attitude. But he falls short with the style.
Chandler nearly ruined literature for me, because everything about every line of his writing'- the dialogue, the descriptions, the societal observations'- is so incredibly entertaining. Nothing can meet its rarified level. So I try to make due with 'close-enoughs.' When I finish a Chandler novel, I am depressed it came to an end; when I closed Parker's Perchance To Dream, it elicited a 'That's all there is?'
In P2D, the narrative is much too straightforward. The villain was clear from the first quarter of the book and there were few mysteries to solve. No convoluted Black Mask motives, no people impersonating other people. Marlowe doesn't even get sapped until distressingly late in the story. There is only one real subplot; then that ties in with the other so they can both be too-neatly wrapped up. It becomes clear what Marlowe must do and he sets out to do it. Then, very abruptly, the novel is over. It is strenuous but not complex. There is no last minute twist because the story followed a Spenser-like plot; it more resembles the structure of the first Lethal Weapon movie than it does that of The Big Sleep.
And as 50 years have passed between the publishing of the original novel and this one, some subtlety has been forsaken. Parker shows welcome restraint given the subject matter, but Carmen's decadence seemed in Chandler's novel somehow exotic and vague. In P2D, as postmodern psychology and sensibilities are applied, it seems cold and open and dirty.
Still, there is a lot that is great in this book. The flashbacks and tips-of-the-hat to the original novel come off better than they might have. We root for Marlowe and hiss the villain, as we should. Parker has penned an abundance of juicy wisecracks and has figured out how to end his chapters in the bittersweet tone much like Chandler accomplished. And the story, despite what I said above, is furiously-paced and viscerally entertaining. It just isn't Chandler.
Perchance To Dream is a good novel; but when someone slaps the words 'Sequel to The Big Sleep' on the cover of anything it had better be blackjack-to-the-head *great*. The fault isn't really Parker's' he came close, and his was a nigh-impossible task. After all, who can be as great as Raymond Chandler?
P.S. Poodle Springs was a more accurate tribute, if a less actionful read.
half-hearted romp through the mean streets.......2001-06-23
a little background is in order (as I understand it): the heirs of Chandler approached Parker to finish the Poodle Springs manuscript, and part of the deal was that he had to write one more Marlowe story. 'Dream' is that one more. The job was almost impossible to begin with (Chandler's drinking had taken the edge off his talent by that time, and the Poodle manuscript got off on the wrong foot to boot), the Chandler fans ripped it for not being up to Chandler's prime (which even Chandler himself wasn't, towards the end), the Parker fans ripped it for not being true Spencer, and Parker felt the strain of wearing another man's shoes. So by the time he got to this one, my guess is, his heart wasn't in it. He's said he'll never do another Marlowe book. That said, it's still good to have Marlowe back, cracking wise and cruising the mean streets again. I liked it better than Chandler's "The Pencil", and better than some of the Spencer books! I just wish Parker would reconsider, and do another Marlowe book without the pressures and constraints of a contract. Marlowe, like Sherlock, is a detective who deserves to live on after his progenitor, but the return of L.A.'s hard-boiled prose-poet is, perchance, just a dream.

Book Description
Innovative, instructional and inspiring, this guide gives designers unlimited ideas for taking typography to new levels of impact and originality. From corporate commissions to self-promotional material, dozens of type-centered designs are featured including everything from print ads and stationery to screen-based designs.
For easy referencing, this full-color book is divided into three sections. Type Alone comprises designs created purely from typography. Type with Image demonstrates how typography can enhance the effect of imagery and how imagery can strengthen the impact of type. Lastly, Type as Image showcases work that uses type itself to create dynamic image and abstract designs.
To help designers re-create these dazzling effects in their own work, each piece offers extended captions complete with production specs, commentary from the actual designer, and notes detailing special processes.
Roger Walton is the Art Director at Duncan Baird Publishers and the editor of Typographics 1, 2 and 3, Hot Sites, Cool Sites, and Sites for Sound. He lives in London, England.
Customer Reviews:
There are so many better books on type out there. . . ........2005-03-16
This book is the worst: poorly designed, poor selection of work, poor reproductions. And it's not even about "big type". The intro says: "
Big Type is not what it might seem. This book is a collection of design work in which the typographic elements assume primary importance." So the editors knew the title was misleading? Then why not change the title? Yuck.

Good Stuff.......2006-01-04
ahhh, i don't know if I can praise this book as the best, but it's good enough for the 5 stars. It's a book that you can get as a beginner balloonologist and learn with through more advanced balloon sculpting stages. It has some really cute ideas that are worth using in your balloon repotoire (is that how you spell that?). I also recommend the Palloncini series.
...peace out
Worth the investment - even during this time of inflation! *snort*.......2005-08-14

the best ballooning book on the market.......2000-09-25
As a hobby balloonist, I have found this to be the best book on the market. Many other balloon art guides offer the basics, and one or two advanced creations. This book offers the most bang for your buck (or pop for your penny), providing not only the "how-to" for all flavours of folds, twists, seeds, and other techniques, but non-traditional models--motorcycles, mermaids, lobsters, moose, bicycles...the list goes on. From beginner to expert, this book will please all but the most advanced balloonist, and maybe even teach the advanced balloonist a thing or two.
Simply the Best.......1999-11-06
As a working professional balloon twister I have had to read a multitude of books on the subject of balloon artistry as part of by business. This book is simply the best I have ever read on the subject . The matter of how to run a balloon business is not covered in detail, which is something of a bonus, as you get more models, ideas and inspiration for your money than in many other books. THE BEST BALOON BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!

Some things in life are too big. Some are too small. And the best things are just right. In this appealing picture book by the author of Cinder-Elly and Sleepless Beauty, opposites are explored in the context of friendship. Two bunny buddies shop for bikes (one's way too big, another is too small, and the last one, a tandem, is just right), go dancing (with partners too short and too tall until they find each other again--just right!), and experience nightlife in a tent (too dark, too bright, just right). Seems they never get it right until they team up--just like the best friendships.
Young readers will be tickled by the humorous details in each vignette, especially the faithful little mouse that accompanies the pink and yellow rabbits on all their excursions. Frances Minters's simple, repetitive text, illustrated with Janie Bynum's smiley watercolor rabbits and elephants and pigs and bears, is just right. (Ages 2 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
Too Small, Too Big, JUST RIGHT!.......2001-09-17
This book is our toddler's (2 years old)new favorite book. It is just adorable! The illustrations are funny and colorful. The writing is minimal, allowing the illustrations to tell the story. We love it! Buy this book!
Just Right for your Preschooler!.......2001-04-07
This book is too wonderful! Two colorful rabbits spend a day doing all the things children love. Sliding, dancing, bicycling, skating, and more! But whatever the rabbits do, it is always 'just right' when they do it together. Children will delight in finding the little mouse-friend in each two page spread. Bynum's fun, vibrant watercolors keep the action hopping along from page to page. A true delight!
