Book Description

What are young photographers up to at the outset of the twenty-first century? How do they see the world? How much do they respect, build on or reject tradition? Are they busy in the darkroom or in the computer lab--or both? reGeneration sets out to discover answers to these intriguing questions, previewing the work of 50 photographers who may well emerge as some of the finest of their generation. This remarkable book, the broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind, showcases the creativity, ingenuity and inspiration of these up-and-coming artists in over 200 superb images. Curators at the world-renowned Musee de l'Elysee in Lausanne, France, selected the featured photographers from hundreds of candidates submitted by more than 60 of the world's top photography schools. The panel's choice was made with one key question in mind: are these images likely to be known in 20 years' time? The results show that, as the new century builds momentum, the art of photography is alive and well, and photographers of extraordinary talent are already making their mark.

5 out of 5 stars Superb selection of groundbreaking photographers.......2007-06-14

The "Regeneration" project is much more than a just a book. It was commissioned to Musée de l'Elysée by the Aperture Foundation as a way to discover the most promising young photographers around the world. It entails a 3-year travelling exhibition across the five continents which guarantees a strong visibility of the selected artists. I totally disagree with other reviewers' opinion that the artists are not "cutting-edge" or "original" in their work. In fact, "fresh fishes" need to be aware of the art history and of the "big contemporary fishes" to be able to produce something worthwhile, something of their own.

We have selected several of these artists in order to represent them. Our favourite works belong to amazing artists such as Bianca Brunner, Leo Fabrizio, Ted Partin, Johann Ryno de Wet and Pétur Thomsen. If you want to know what's on today and what will be in the future, buy this book!

2 out of 5 stars a narrow view.......2006-06-21

this really is, as the other reviewer wrote, a one-sided view. i would browse this book in a store and if it really strikes you then go get jeff wall, philip lorca dicorcia, or gregory crewdson and see some much better work.

3 out of 5 stars An Overview of Student Work.......2006-05-02

It is difficult to find any single place with significant collections of exciting new photography and for that reason, the premise of this book attracted me. It consists of "mini portfolios" from 50 "unknown" photographers, selected from art schools around the world. Published by Aperture, the quality of reproduction is high, it is affordably priced and the book does a nice job of presenting the work.

Some of the work is very, very good. In particular, I enjoyed Mauren Brodbeck's urban landscapes, where she digitally manipulates the images to emphasize the space occupied by a building. Another photographer to watch is Idris Khan, who presents composited, appropriated imagery of post cards from the Tate, spherical gas tank photos by the Bechers and from his own travels.

There is clearly more mileage to get from this kind of conceptual approach and the book would have benefited with a focus in this direction. Other people of note were Chih-Chien Wang, who focuses on his first hand experience with immigration through a distinctive style and Eva Lauterlein, who digitally manipulates portraiture to change her subject's identity.

However, other than the trend in digital and conceptual photography, you won't find many new, groundbreaking trends in this book. Part of the trouble is using the art schools as a filter to find new work. Students tend to be strongly influenced by the work of others -- they have not had a chance to develop their own artistic identity. And art schools all tend to teach the same things. For that reason, many of the works have a derivative "I've seen that before" look to them.

Throughout this book, you see the echoes of Cindy Sherman, Alec Soth, Stephen Shore, and many others of that generation whose influence is strong with this generation. Of course, the best way to learn is to imitate others who have gone before and as an artist, you want to have that knowledge in your repertoire of understanding, if only to explore and break those rules later. To me, this book shows just how difficult it is to find your own voice.

Book Description

The twentieth-century's fast cars, trains, and planes promised to conquer space and time; their aerodynamic styling and metallic bodies embodied a new and modern beauty that enchanted American designers from the late 1920s to the 1950s. Streamlining became popular for everything, including toy scooters, typewriters, power tools, teakettles, Coca-Cola bottles, Lucky Strike packaging, Fiestaware pitchers, Studebaker cars, Greyhound buses, and the 20th Century Limited train.
This book celebrates streamlining as epitomized by the work of Raymond Loewy, Donald Deskey, Henri Dreyfuss, Russel Wright, and Norman Bel Geddes, and introduces other industrial designers, also highlighting the resurgence of streamlining among international vanguard designers from the 1980s to the present.
Patent drawings and period photographs demonstrate the usage of these dynamically styled objects. Two hundred objects drawn from the Eric Brill Collection (recently donated to the American Friends of Canada) and supplemented by the Stewart Collection of 20th Century Design were photographed for this book. A full bibliography, biographies of the designers, and index complete the study.

5 out of 5 stars Design for the The World of Tommorow.......2006-03-06

The phrase "Art Deco" was only coined in the late 1960's to describe an era of modern design from 1925 to 1940. In an American context, Art Deco is an umbrella term that covers such diverse styles as "International Style", "Moderne", "Art Moderne", "Modernist", "Machine Age", "Depression Modern" and "Streamline". All these terms are inter-related and are no more than attempts to fine tune our understanding of modern design during this period.

Most of the art books and museum catalogues that are written about the American Art Deco era concentrate on superbly crafted objects that were produced for wealthy people. These same museum quality objects show up time and time again in the different books. What separates "American Streamlined Design" from most of the other books on American Art Deco is that authors concentrate on mass produced items that were made for the middle class.

In the 1930's and 1940's, the concept of streamline with its emphasis on clean, swept back lines and futuristic detailing appealed to a nation undergoing an economic Depression and entering into a World War. Inherent in the Streamline's design philosophy was the promise of a better world. In response, a generation of talented industrial designers began to produce thousands of objects that embraced this design philosophy. What makes this book extraordinary is the collection of such ordinary objects as typewriters, bathroom scales and lawn mowers. This book shows just how beautiful everday objects can be. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Speed lines on Main Street.......2006-02-13

Without Eric Brill's vision of a streamlined America this book would not be possible. He collected almost eight hundred products and donated his amazing collection to the Stewart Collection in Montreal. This book is a stunningly beautiful celebration of a very American, egalitarian design style.

The story of Streamline is pretty well documented (I've even done a Listmania about it) but what lifts this book above the others is its coverage of everyday products. Mr Brill could hardly collect buildings, shroud enclosed steam engines or Greyhound buses so he sought out mass-produced products available on any Main Street.

The visual basis of the book is a hundred and eighty products for use in the commercial world, the home (kitchen, bathroom, living room) and recreation. Each has a superb, simple still-life color photo that really makes these products sparkle, captions include manufacturing details and a design analysis of the item. Nicely some of this text has a delightful light heartedness. It is the product photos that I just love about the book, to see a whole-page color shot of a Stromberg-Carlson portable radio, a Skippy-Racer kids scooter (designed by Harold Van Doren) a Juice-King juicer or a DeVilbiss portable compressor in such clarity is amazing.

The six chapters comprehensively explore Streamline with the last one considering the effect the style had on product design over the last decade. The last pages include the usual designer biographies, bibliography (a brief but excellent listing) and index. There is the odd inclusion of ten pages near the beginning of the book devoted to a fulsome description of Eric Brill's residence, the beautiful Mandel House, in Bedford Hills, New York designed by Edward Durell Stone. This is the only architectural text in the book and I assume is only included because Mr Brill lived in this Moderne house. It also includes a rather brief description of the origins of his collection, though I would have liked to read a lot more about his research into Streamline and how he bought these items years after they were first made

The perfect complement to 'American Streamlined Design' is American Modern, 1925-1940: Design for a New Age which has the same very strong visual format with beautifully photographed product shots. Its coverage though is for the more artistically creative items, glass, metal-ware and furniture for instance, rather than mass-produced items. With these two books (both beautifully designed and printed) you'll have as near perfect coverage of Streamline products so far available.

Book Description

The metropolis of the future — as perceived by architect Hugh Ferriss in 1929 — was both generous and prophetic in vision. Largely an illustrated essay on the modern city and its future, Ferriss' book incorporated his philosophy of architecture. Includes powerful illustrations of towering structures, personal space, wide avenues, and rooftop parks. 59 illustrations.

2 out of 5 stars Brutal metropolis.......2006-06-10

I think that generally Dover Books are to be congratulated on reprinting many books that otherwise might never be seen again and priced very reasonably too. I don't think any plaudits are in order on this book though. I found the text very dull and the pictures gave an overall impression of blackness.

Hugh Ferris managed to develop a wonderful rendering technique (being trained as an architect no doubt helped) that seemed so suited to commercial buildings of size, especially skyscrapers. His black and white artwork is simply stunning but it needs to be printed on quality paper to bring out the subtleties of grey shading. The main problem with the book is the paper does nothing for his work and I was really made aware of this when I recently bought 'Power in Buildings' (ISBN 0940512114) a lovely reprint of his 1953 book. The fourth of his famous renderings from Evolution of the Set-back Building appears in both books but in the 'Power' edition the image looks so right.

His writing in 'Metropolis' came across as very long-winded, for example, this is from the last page of the book:
'As for personal and specific proposals, the author well knows how many parapets, other than the one we are now leaving, overlook the imaginary "Metropolis of Tomorrow" and he shares the common belief that few of the many visualizations currently being formulated can contribute more than a particle to the ultimate actuality'
The ten pages of words and pictures devoted to Set-back I thought the most interesting part of what he had to say.

Get his 'Power' book for a much better appreciation of his architectural thoughts and the fifty main renderings really look beautiful on good paper.

4 out of 5 stars Magnificent Value.......2005-07-28

Ferriss's drawings had an immediate impact on architecture. Some of his projections are the purest distilling of Art Deco application to buildings one can find from the age. But Ferriss's effect on cinema and illustration has been very powerful as well, and far less documented. The 1-star-off is because the reproduction quality -- quite good, no doubt -- leaves some to be desired, nonetheless: the sfumato effects appear more like soft-focus than atmosphere and the graininess brings to mind infra-red film more than the grit of a huge city fueled by leaded gas and coal.

5 out of 5 stars Visual philosopher.......1997-11-01

To say that this 1920's classic is anything other than a masterpiece would be proof of insanity. By "interpreting" a Law, (NY Zoning 1917), Ferriss found beauty in the hope of what might be. In today's world of 3D CAD and computers, Ferriss was able to use canvas to convey not merely ideas and requirements, but opportunities and emotions. There are few books that inspire architects more than this. The value of original prints of this is evident in that single plates are sold in New York for $20 apiece by street vendors Architects are usually too caught up in the details to appreciate the beauty of buildings. Leave it then, to a painter to bring out the beauty and grace of buildings that were meant to inspire, or were not meant to be.

    Book Description

"This book provides a mirror to our past--a past that has been ignored or overshadowed for too long." From the foreword by Alex Haley Kern-Foxworth chronicles the stereotypical portrayals of Blacks in advertising from the turn of the century to the present. Beginning with slave advertisements, she discusses how slavery led naturally to the stereotypes found in early advertisements. From the end of the slave era to the culmination of the Civil Rights movement, advertising portrayed Blacks as Aunt Jemimas, Uncle Bens, and Rastuses, and the author explores the psychological impact of these portrayals. With the advent of the Civil Rights movement, organizations such as CORE and NAACP voiced their opposition and became active in the elimination of such advertising. In the final chapters, the volume examines the reactions of consumers to integrated advertising and the current role of Blacks in advertising. Its truly novel subject matter and its inclusion of vintage and contemporary advertisements featuring Blacks make this a valuable work.

5 out of 5 stars Badly needed commentary.......2002-08-10

After the civil war, (segregation notwithstanding) African Americans were technically free people, yet were featured in service products essentially recreating slavery. African Americans were only allowed a public acceptance if they conformed to stereotypical images produced by the larger (predominantely white) society.

Kern-Foxworth's tome provides an eloquent examination of this double bind through brand origins to their modern day counterparts. Early depictions of Aunt Jemima reveal a gross caricturization of Black women's physical features and alleged mannerisms that can never be mistaken for flattery, yet this image was welcomed into many facilities where a living African American irrespective of title would never had been welcome.

Critics of this meticulously researched, spell-binding work could argue the presence of African Americans featured on foodstuffs could be a paean to black visibility via capitalism (where purchasing popularity becomes linked to empowerment/) but the argument would conveniently neglect the undeniably problematic implications of linking African American service and purchase.

Not even a transformation from turbaned servant to the vague "modern woman" has completely resolved very serious cultural contradictions and dilemmas surrounding Aunt Jemima. Is she a tool of the dominant society, a covert agent for revolutionary change or somewhere in between? Through art deconstructing and explore cultural politics, she is positioned as an uneasy reminder of America's less than admirable history of discrimination and bigotry.

Reading this book is tough, but critical for everybody interested in political change and pop culture. Advertising imagery is not inanimate, instead both reflecting and shaping the nation. Encouraging critically thought about the political undertones of pop culture, the author by extension makes profound contributions to civil rights public policy.

3 out of 5 stars Made me hungry..........2000-03-13

I felt bad...because after reading this book about what a horrible, racist image Aunt Jemima is...I was inspired to go get a box of her mix and eat pancakes three meals a day. Very informative book, it goes a bit far in blaming everything in the world on racism...as is the style of the day

This was among the first art collection books I ever laid eyes upon, and to this day it remains one of my all-time favourites. It's a massive collection of what is perhaps the most disturbing and memorable art you are ever likely to come across, bar none. Despite the title, there are a good number of abstract and symbolic works in here too with haunting, dream-like qualities. Definitely worth consideration and a fine addition to any modern art library.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing collection of sci-fi art.......2002-02-14

This book has been with me a better part of my life. This 1978 book from Ian Summers is a collection of various sci-fi artwork by many different artists. Many of the pictures are bizarre, surrealistic, often disturbing, and of course otherworldly. You'll often notice a lot of influence from Salvador Dali, Hieronymous Bosch, fantasy, swords and sorcery, Tolkien, and whatever was on the various artists imagination. The book is divided in sections like "Aliens", "Fantasy", "Barbarians", "Spacecraft", "Other Worlds", etc. With each illustration is the name of the artist responsible. There is also an appendix in the back of the book which tells you the name of the artist, as well as the name of the artwork and year (if known), not to mention the page number you'll find the illustation in question. The back is the index of all the artists names (in alphabetical order), and what pages you'll find their artwork to the artist you're interested in or curious of. Some of the artists featured are the Hildebrandt Brothers (Greg and Tim), Nick Aristovulous, Richard Powers, Edward Soyka, John Berkey, Paul Alexander, Boris Vallejo, and so many more. Of the artists, I found Richard Powers to be the most disturbing. A lot of the artwork you see presented here had been featured as covers of books, magazines, albums, movie posters, and much more. Much of what you'll see here is from the 1970s, with only a handful from the 1960s and nothing before 1961 (as far as I know, as some of the arwork has not been dated). So if you're looking to see how sci-fi artwork has evolved in the 1980s and 1990s, you won't find it here, as Tomorrow and Beyond was published in 1978 so you're mostly getting a '70s perspective. If some of the artwork you see presented in Tomorrow and Beyond seems a bit familiar, well, some of it was used as various issues of OMNI Magazine well in to the 1980s. The illustrations you see here in Tomorrow and Beyond will fascinate you, disturbe you, or both. The book is out of print, but if you can track a copy, do so. If you like sci-fi art, then you simply need this book.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificant Collection of Photographs.......2006-05-21

Back more years ago than I want to admit when I was first getting interested in science fiction the main source was a series of magazines and paperback (or as wee called them at the time pocketbooks) with fantastic covers designed to attract the eye to the contents.

Modern book covers just don't seem to convey the same feeling. They are more modern, they realize that bug eyed monsters, sleek space ships (that all look surprisingly like the German V-2), cities on the moon, rainy jungles on Venus don't and even can't exist. The new covers certainly don't have the same feel as the old ones.

This book brings back the images from the past. And these were the books/magazines where the first of many of the classic writers Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, H. G. Wells, Robert Heinlein and more. Here is the first illustration of Ae van Vogt's 'The Weapon Shops of Isher.'

It's a fascinating book to look through, over and over. Oh yes, there's some text here too, but frankly I haven't read it. I've tried, but I get so distracted by the pictures that I'm soon just looking. I'll read it one day.

3 out of 5 stars The Best Image is the Cover.......2006-02-01

It's an interesting book with some rather humorous comments and great sources of information. Has a good collection of comic/pulp art. While it is still going to be kept in my collection, I was hoping for a lot better book. It does offer some interesting artwork, but the work doesn't have a great variety of artistic styles. I have this as well as a couple other pulp on my coffee table at home and in my office for people to see. Everyone that has picked up the book says it looks interesting but "the pictures all look kinda the same" is the typical response to it. The best image out of the entire book is the cover art (which does make sense...but), and that was the one that seemed to be the most unique. They did discuss some of the artists, but the authors develed greatly into L. Ron Hubbard for a handful of pages and discuss his work rather fervently. Which didn't seem to be the case with other author/artist from previous eras. These consisted of blurbs here and there of other talented artists. The way this portion sort of popped up 3/4 way through the book started to make me kinda wonder if one or both of the authors are followers of Scientology. It's a good average book. I don't see it winning any awards.

2 out of 5 stars Wonderful Pictures, Abysmal Text.......2005-09-17

This is a book that is wonderful to look at and painful to read. As for the pictures, they are well chosen and beautifully reproduced. They might have been shown in bigger sizes, but this would have been at the expense of the volume's design, which is artful. The present arrangement is a good compromise. The division of the book into four visual categories (rockets, creatures, etc.) is useful.

If, however, one turns one's eyes to the text, there is nothing but disappointment. First of all, the editors did not bother to connect the text to the accompanying illustrations. Their remarks refer to pictures elsewhere in the book, but they don't say where, so one is left to look ahead and back without a clue. As to the quality of the remarks, there simply isn't any. Vague blather about how the (unidentified) artists managed to foresee the future is about all there is, except for Linaweaver's gushing praise of his adored "Forry." Ackerman himself appears to have phoned this one in, saying almost nothing specific about the illustrations (which would have required some work), but only vaporing vaguely about how the future is coming. Visually, this is a well-wrought book, but its text is lazy, empty, and dull.

5 out of 5 stars DAZZLING ART FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF SCI-FI.......2005-07-08

"Worlds of Tomorrow" is a truly wonderful and nostalgic look back at science fiction art of the golden age of pulp magazines and science fiction books. Written by Mr. Sci-Fi himself, Forrest Ackerman, along with Brad Linaweaver this is a dazzling look into the past at the wonderful art of the 20's through the 50's that graced the covers of those early sci-fi books and pulps such as Amazing Stories, Startling Stories, Astounding Stories, Galaxy, and many more. No one knows Sci-Fi like Uncle Forry and many credit him with coining that term in the first place. It was the very first issue of Amazing Stories that inspired Ackerman's life-long love of the genre and set him on his pace to accrue one of the most fabulous collections of memorabilia ever assembled.

The book reprints hundreds of these classic pulp and book covers along with running anecdotes from both Ackerman and Linaweaver. We look back at these great covers and discover just how visionary the artists were sixty plus years ago. Their works had a perhaps over-spectacular flair to them, but they foreshadowed much of the technology we use today like computers, cell phones, atomic power, spacecraft, and robots. Frank R. Paul was the first star of pulp art as his work graced many covers of Hugo Gernsback's amazing stories and now sells for thousands of dollars today.

Each chapter takes on a different subject such as chapter two's look at space travel with all manner of fantastic rockets, and ships and saucers. It's interesting to see how designs changed from the earliest pulps of the 20's to the 1950's when actual space programs were able to provide inspiration to the artists. One can even see our present day space shuttles in the works of these early talents.

Chapter three covers robots and again these covers don't disappoint as they imagine robot designs both functional and sublime. There are humanoid robots, insectoid robots, even robots that look incredibly like the Transformer robots so popular today. One great cover to Galaxy from September 1954, shows a scientist working on a female android who looks entirely human, but with her skin peeled away over one arm and shoulder showing her internal circuitry, inspiring views of The Terminator, some thirty years before that film came out.

It is then interesting to see how when we move to the 1950's, aliens become the one of the main subjects for covers. With no limits but their own imaginations we are treated to a veritable treasure trove of scaly, hairy, slithering beasts and it's clear that many of the "B" filmmakers of the 1950's used the pulps as their inspiration in creating their latex monsters.

It's truly a magnificent book and I was especially captivated by the covers of the old Sci-Fi novels as you so rarely encounter them these days. A must have for Sci-fi collectors and fans! And as a side note, this book, like all of the Collector's Press books are well made using thick, coated stock, heavy covers and bound beautifully with the collector in mind.

    5 out of 5 stars A splendid tome.......2005-05-08

This is a beautiful book with magnificent color throughout. Let me say that I disagree with the previous reviewer who complained about the size of the images. Speaking as the owner of a decent pulp collection, my feeling is that the image size is entirely adequate; indeed distortion might arise if they were shown much larger. The pictures are clear and crisp, and the color tones superb.

Forrest has made a very interesting selection of publications to feature in this book, with a large representation of UK Curtis Warren, Vargo Statten-era books that are not seen all that often. Books on pop culture collectibles (e.g. Future Toys by Emchowicz) often have great items and art, but there's one drawback; one's seen them all in other books. Here Forry steers a very well chosen course, incorporating enough of the well known covers that have appeared in Robertson/Davidson's great Pulp Culture, or in the definitive work that started my personal lust for pulp art, Brian Aldiss' Science Fiction Art; but adding enough new and less well known, albeit excellent, material. There's virtually no current stuff, which suits me fine.

Nice work, Forry! Not that we've come to expect anything else from you. From the days in the mid sixties when I would sneak into a tiny side street newsagent shop, that smelled of old fried food, in Winchester, England to buy Famous Monsters, Forry has been a shining light in the present day surreal. I've heard that the collection he so generously shared with the public may have been sold to pay legal bills; if so, may he come across that painting of Dracula by Bram Stoker one day!

    Henry Ford
    Today and Tomorrow
Commemorative Edition of Ford's 1926 Classic

Originally published in 1926, Today and Tomorrow, written by the world's most famous automaker, Henry Ford, reveals the thinking that changed industry forever.

Ford's ideas have never stopped having an impact. Taiichi Ohno, the creator of the Just-In-Time (JIT) manufacturing system, freely acknowledges that a key stimulus to JIT was his close reading of Ford. Today these same ideas have re-emerged to revitalize industry around the world.

Today and Tomorrow chronicles Ford's progressive vision. It was his credo of using low-cost, high-quality production to win market share that inspired the Japanese to do the same. In these 24 chapters, Ford discusses topics that are just as relevant today as they were in 1926, at the height of Henry Ford's success:

    · Money, power, and big business
    · Work standards, time, and motion
    · Learning from waste
    · Wages, hours, and employee motivation
    · The power of education

Today, Henry Ford's ideas warrant a second look. He doubled wages, cut the price of a car in half, and produced over 2 million units a year. Time has not diminished the impact of his business philosophy, or his profound influence on worldwide industry. You will be enlightened by what you read and intrigued by the words of this colorful and remarkable man.

This updated printing of Today and Tomorrow features a new introduction by James J. Padilla, Group Vice President North America for Ford Motor Company. It also includes an enhanced selection of photos illustrating the processes and facilities Ford covers in the text as well as an updated chronology of the Ford Motor Company.

4 out of 5 stars An historical document of our contemporary.......2005-05-17

There are different "uses" for this book - some I'd recommend, and others not.
I WOULD NOT recommend this book for it's insights on -
Economics: Ford explains a classic industrial notion that a company paying employees more will increase its sales because employees will buy more company product. Not only is this a false assumption of employee behavior, it also only approaches plausibility for very large consumer product companies.
Finance: Ford describes how financial instruments are short-term narcotics and long-term ills. His opinion seems to ignore the buffering benefits of finance, as well as the gains created for society by letting financial tools open possibilities.

HOWEVER, YOU SHOULD READ THIS BOOK BECAUSE -

It is current: Ford describes a organizational skill poorly understood and mostly ignored: coordination. In the book, many processes are described that Ford says are all well known to other companies, but how the Ford Corporation made the processes interact was their power. Today's out-sourcing is more palatable knowing this skill.
It is insightful: An excellent alternative to the "profit-motive" of companies is presented: service-motive. Not because profits are bad does Ford present the service-motive, but because profits are give unreliable feedback. Ford sees the maintenance of service to the public as a more durable goal.
It is historical: Not only does it provide the roots to Taiichi Ohno's - Toyota's - operations strategy, but it also gives clues to why Ford lost dominance. The Toyota roots pop up in Ford's writing on waste, on cleanliness (5s), on continuous flow, and on timing. The clues pop up with his ignorance of customer desires vs. needs, his overconfidence in managing highly diverse businesses, and his inattention to downstream processes.

If you know the limitations of Today and Tomorrow, you then can reap great benefits by reading it as if it was written last week. Many of its ideas have yet to fully play out in the world of industry.

5 out of 5 stars A Visionary in Many Arenas.......2005-02-16

This is the book that made me appreciate Mr Ford's accomplishments and how he changed the world of business, particularly manufacturing. He was a leader and true visionary in many aspects of business, which are chronicled herein, and many of the roots of Lean are documented in this text. Aside from kanban and `jelly beans', he didn't miss much of the fundamentals of what we see as Lean.

The impacts of Ford's principles on business, the economy, social ramifications, and more are profound. The ideas, thought processes, and applications are expressed well and we can learn from these today. Too bad much of the rest of American business lost sight of Ford's techniques as they became enamored with scientific formulae like EOQ (economic order quantities) without questioning the assumptions.

5 out of 5 stars The book that inspired Taiichi Ohno.......2001-10-22

This is an outstanding book for those folks in manufacturing who are starting out on their "Lean" journey. The book teaches the uninitiated an original thinker's way of recognizing "waste" in manufacturing, and often, how to deal with that waste. Taiichi Ohno took a "shipload" of this book with him to Japan in the '50s and made sure that every Toyota engineer read the book. The rest is history as to how Toyota packaged this information for the rest of the world, including the United States, in its now famous "7 wastes of manufacturing." You will enjoy the book and learn what an outstanding visionary Henry Ford really was.

    Book Description

The Train Of Tomorrow was a concept train built by General Motors to promote the sales of diesel locomotives by its Electro-Motive Division. It featured a newly crafted dome car, the brainchild of Cyrus R. Osborn, general manager of EMD at the time. Completed in 1947, the four-car train became a postwar symbol of American know-how and promised a bright future for the railroads. That same year the train began a 28-month tour of the United States and Canada, and then was sold to the Union Pacific, which put the cars into daily service. In the mid-1960s, the cars were sold for scrap and believed lost. This book restores the Train Of Tomorrow to its rightful place in history. It includes nearly 200 photographs, drawings, and documents, as well as the diary kept during its inaugural tour.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on this subject........2007-04-25

The author accomplished what no previous one has done was to document a post-war "concept" train from start to finish. His research is well done as he made use of General Motors, Pullman Techology, Electro-Motive Division and Union Pacific archieves to include photos, trip logs, press releases, and bill of sales.

The author states he is not a railfan, and in some of his writing he shows it. But forgot the little mis-informed mistakes and enjoy the book as a history of the state of the nation's railroad after VJ Day.
