Book Description
Mark Twain once observed, “A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus public-health scares circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas–business people, teachers, politicians, journalists, and others–struggle to make their ideas “stick.”
Why do some ideas thrive while others die? And how do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? In Made to Stick, accomplished educators and idea collectors Chip and Dan Heath tackle head-on these vexing questions. Inside, the brothers Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the “human scale principle,” using the “Velcro Theory of Memory,” and creating “curiosity gaps.”
In this indispensable guide, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds–from the infamous “kidney theft ring” hoax to a coach’s lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony–draw their power from the same six traits.
Made to Stick is a book that will transform the way you communicate ideas. It’s a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures)–the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of “the Mother Teresa Effect”; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas–and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick.

Essential Reading for Ad Execs.......2007-10-18
Essential reading for ad execs. Gets to the heart of the matter. Gets inside peoples heads... Highly recommended... and no one paid me to say this!
Monumental.......2007-10-14
There are few books I will classify as good, even less as very good, and positively a very, very few books I would call great. This one falls into that last category.
It's simple, the question these two authors (and brothers) set out to answer: what makes some ideas so memorable that, across time and space, they are never forgotten? I grew up in west Africa and as a child, even I had heard the Kidney Story used as one example.
While the question is a simple one, it is not easy. After what I think must have been an incredible amount of research, the brothers Heath have answered in an elegantly simple way: according to them, there are a few characteristics (as a mnemonic, they spell SUCCES) of "sticky" ideas.
This is literally an eye opening book for me and I cannot recommend it more. I'll be rereading this book every few months.
A valuable tool for anyone who has to communicate -- that is, everyone!.......2007-10-09
As a general rule, I don't enjoy "pop-business" titles. But Made to Stick defied all expectations. Lively and useful examples illustrate the authors' different points. The advice is practical and applicable to a variety of situations. It's not just about writing better. It's an improvement on all ways of communicating: to an audience, to co-workers, to clients, etc.
Excellent work.
Too sticky to put down!.......2007-10-06
It's all in the details. Well worth the investment - especially if you need to make your message 'stick.'
Get Your Story Straight And Revolutionize Your Marketing.......2007-10-05
Jake, a young entrepreneurial friend of mine in the IT industry , was not seeing the results he expected from numerous and inventive marketing strategies. He had tried online, print and direct marketing with marginal results. His business wasn't faltering but wasn't soaring either. So after a slew of marketing books he came across this one- and it was all I was hearing about from him until I read it myself and the light bulb clicked.
Just like you were interested in Jake's story other people like stories, they want to relate to you and your product but if they can't they will find a company that they can relate to.
Chip and Dan Heath give great examples every chapter on how to improve your "Stickiness" with simple strategies. The most important being their coined,
"SUCCES" acronym:
S simple - don't lose your core message in a lot of pomp and circumstance
U unexpected - make your idea jump out and grab people's attention
C concrete - keep it easy to grasp vs. mind boggling statistics or huge numbers
C credible - is your idea believable?
E emotional - people react to emotion and it creates an empathetic bond
S stories - story telling is an age old form of communication
I have been able to use "Made To Stick" concepts in my business with great results. I used to feel that stories in real estate investing wouldn't interest anyone but I knew from the book that stories were useful, if not crucial, in creating and growing a business. Now by using my customer's concrete feedback blended with their credible testimonials and sprinkled with a little emotion I am able transmit their core experience (what they got out of working with us an how it translated to their bottom line) to reach a greater audience.

Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to natural Health for Dogs and Cats.......2007-10-17
UPON READING THIS BOOK I MUST SAY THAT IT IS THE MOST INFORMATIVE AND LOGICAL BOOK ON OUR PETS NUTRITION. WITH MANY RECIPES FOR EVERY PETS PARTICULAR NEEDS. NOT TO MENTION THE INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT IS IN THE PET FOODS THAT WE ARE FEEDING OUR PETS. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO WANTS THE BEST NUTRITION FOR THEIR ANIMALS. FIVE STARS IS NOT ENOUGH TO SAY HOW GOOD THIS INFORMATIVE BOOK IS. LINDA JONES
Owner of a 20 year old Shih Tzu.......2007-10-15
NOTE: The only part of this book that I use is the dog food recipes. I haven't tried any of the home remedies, nor do I want to. That's why I'm only giving the book 4 stars.
I have been feeding my small dog the Doggie Oats recipe (substituting rice for the oats per Dr. Pitcairn's instructions) for the past 10 years. When I first started making her food, my vet and everyone else I knew were very skeptical. Now that my dog is 20 years old (no kidding), I no longer get raised eyebrows about the food. If I ever have another dog she will definitely get a home-made diet. Of course, if you have a large dog you might go broke, but Dr. Pitcairn even has recipes for top-dressing regular dog food if you can't afford to feed all homemade.
I've been doing this so long that it's just part of my routine. Every 2 weeks I make a large batch of dog food and store it in small reusable containers. I keep one in the fridge and freeze the rest. It's easy, my dog loves it, and it's good for her. It's not cheap, but neither is vet care and my dog has needed very little of that.
A Killer of a Book..........2007-10-15
If you are in to homeopathy and want to use such toxins as Poison ivy and belladonna on your beloved pet, then this book is for you. Mine is in the trash can.
I am delighted to have this book!.......2007-10-14
I have 2 dogs and I am not ready to make all of their meals from scratch ...I still need to do more research and read more Whole dog Journals ... but this book is wonderful because it tells me ways I can enhance their lives, what vegetables and grains I can and should not add, wonderful advice to add kelp and bone meal and other healthy things my dogs benefit from ... I also have taken advice from the herbal preparations when my dogs have had problems. This is an interesting and enjoyable book to read and a terrific safe basic written by a vet. I keep this book out all the time and use it often. If you have a cat or dog whom you love, and you want to help him or her live a healthier life, I would highly reccomend reading this book. You can follow the easy recipes or you can just give healthy additions and healthy snacks.
Dr Pitcairns natural health.......2007-10-05
This is absolutely a must book. Giving dogs prescribed medications often involves side affects which shorten their lives. Being able to find out about natural products that can help them is great. It can not only lenghten their lives, but also cost less in the long run. I highly reccomend this book to all dog owners.
Book Description
Giants. We must face them. Yet, we need not face them alone.
This profound look at the life of David digs deeply into the defeats he suffered, and the victories he won, as he faced the giants in his life. When David focused on God, giants tumbled. But when David focused on giants…
he stumbled.
Goliaths still roam in our world. Debt. Disaster. Dialysis. Divorce. Deceit. Disease. Depression. These super-sized challenges swagger and strut into our lives, pilfering our sleep, embezzling our peace and robbing us of our joy. And while these giants try to dominate our lives, we know what to do! We've learned what David learned, and we do what David did. We become God focused. We pick up five stones. We make five decisions. And we take a swing.

Overcoming circumstances.......2007-09-29
I was given this book, it was a good read, but the information wasn't anything new, nor was it very impressive. It was a smooth reader, but almost to the point of beating a dead horse. Now, I am not putting down the work of the Cross or Jesus or the Holy Spirit or even King David. It's just the same ole story with a different author. I did find some of Max's antedotes and case histories of his own family interesting and the view of the Rainbow, that was most interesting.
Would I buy the book, no. Would I recommend someone else to buy the book? Not really. There are better books for the money.
Here are some examples: They Smell Like Sheep by Dr. Lynn Anderson
True Discipleship by Kossler, The Holiest of All by Andrew Murray, Power Filled Living by R.A. Torrey. These are just a few.
I've found when we are facing the giants, if we focus on God, Center ourself on Him, in Him and then look outside the box, so-to-speak and allow the Spirit of God to lead us to someone else that is hurting more than ourselves, God will work out our problems usually by the interaction of our neighbors.
In Christ we pray. Amen.
Learning from David's Triumphs and Mistakes.......2007-09-21
Max Lucado is known for his encouraging books, and this book is no exception. Here, he studies King David, both the good and the bad, to show us how to face the giants in our lives.
The ultimate lesson is simple, when your focus is on God, giants fall. Yet he uses stories from first and second Samuel, both the good and the bad, to show us how this played out in David's life.
The book works as a biography, showing us the events in David's life as they happened. While most chapters are a self contained lesson, it does allow us to see how one event often led to another.
Obviously, we see David fighting Goliath. But we also see him hiding from Saul, his friendship with Jonathan, hiding with the enemy, keeping his promises, falling into adultery and murder with Bathsheba, and watching his own children spin out of control. From this we learn the importance of friends and family, but ultimately the importance of putting our focus on God.
Max Lucado very rarely brings anything new to the table. That's certainly the case here. There is very little I haven't heard before. But he always puts such a fresh, encouraging spin on things, I always see things in a new light. And even when admonishing us, he still does it gently.
I set this book down reluctantly when I finished. My heart was encouraged, and my focus was where it needed to be, God. If you need some help remembering where your focus needs to be, this book is for you.
Max's Best .......2007-09-17
This is absolutely the most enlightening and funny book I've ever read from a Christian author.
This wonderful book is deep enough for an elephant to swim in, yet shallow enough for a child to wade in.
That describes Facing Your Giants to a T.
Like all Lucado books, awesome.......2007-09-06
An insightful tie to old testament events around Davids life and life for us today.
Wonderful book!.......2007-08-26
Story of King David's successes and failures confronting the giants in his life, and how we can learn from them. Many challenging question in study guide at the end of book.

With its interesting clinical vignettes, this book makes the information in the DSM IV palatable. The DSM IV is a huge book loaded with information and facts. THIS book helps to make the diagnoses real and personal. I enjoyed reading it not just to study for my Licensed Mental Health Counselor test but also as an interesting guidebook to mental health disorders.

Book Description
Is sex more trouble than it's worth? Are you too slow? Do you rely excessively on prolonged (even painful) intercourse, oral sex or vibrators? Is your orgasm hit or miss?
Now with this bold but simple 3 step program, any woman - YOU - can achieve orgasm without difficulty during sex. IMPOSSIBLE? Not if you follow the quick and easy formula you will learn in this book.
Now there is hope for any woman suffering the agonizing frustration of a too-slow, unreliable or non-existent orgasm. Five Minutes to Orgasm once and for all crushes the dogma that achieving orgasm must take longer for a woman than it does for a man.
Stop blaming your partner for being too fast, inept and uncaring. Five Minutes to Orgasm describes in frank, detailed terms a method for making female orgasm the natural, effortless outcome of each and every lovemaking experience, and frees him from slavery to the female orgasm.
Customer Reviews:
baaad book.......2007-10-19
Seriously, don't buy this book. She touts "The 3 secrets" that will ensure a great big "O" every time. I'll save you time and money and tell them to you here: here they are: Be on top, use a vibrator, and fantasize. Yep, that's it! This book makes heavy use of italics and bold print.
Not Exactly a Revelation.......2007-10-15
I can understand how this book would help women who have never combined penetration with mastrubation. My girlfriend has never hesitated to combine the two, yet she still has trouble reaching a climax. Vibrating toys seems to be the best guarantee, but this information doesn't hurt.
Educational.......2007-09-12
This book is easy to read, entertaining and educational, a trusty guide to the physical means to that wonderful and mind blowing orgasm.
Five Minutes to Orgasm.......2007-09-11
I decided to buy this book because I've always had problems reaching orgasm when my husband and I make love, and I was hopeful that there was something I hadn't tried. This book is great, especially for a woman who hadn't really tried the technique the author suggests. I guess I thought there was something wrong with it, or I hadn't thought of using manipulation and intercourse together. But the author makes a good case for the point of view of the book, and even though I am relatively inexperienced at masturbation, I decided to practice more as the author suggests. I would recommend this book as an augmentation to other sexual literature, depending on how experienced you are, whether you do or do not have difficulty reaching climax. It gives more detailed and complete explanations than many, somewhat more than your average "improve your relationship" type of books give. From talking to some of my other women friends, especially those who are not embarrassed to admit they still haven't gotten it "right," many of us could use this refresher course in making love.
Faster and Efficient Orgasms.......2007-09-08
If you are one of the many women who have a problem in this area, in order to achieve orgasm during intercourse, you need to learn how your body works. Learn how to get in positions where you can move your hips and easily reach your clitoris for a fast and easy orgasm. You can continue to try reaching orgasm through thrusting alone and end up dissatisfied, or you can guarantee your orgasm every time you have sex by using this book.

Customer Reviews:
Heere we go again..........2007-01-14
Another book fawning all over Toyota and the Japanese as being the absolute masters of production. No one but them can possibly produce anything properly. Oh, wait, did this book mention that it was AMERICANS who showed the Japanese modern production methods immediately after WWII? By golly, they left out that little detail.. you probably don't hear that too much, but look it up if you don't believe me. For all of the 1950's and most of the 1960's, "Made in Japan" was not a good thing to see on a product. Only in the past 30 years have they gotten good. I won't deny that American companies have gotten sloppy, and they need a cold hard slap to wake them up. But, I think that some of these books go a little overboard heaping praise on Japanese methods.
Best Primer on Lean Manufacturing.......2007-01-14
This easy to read book outlines all the concepts of lean manufacturing in an entertaining and understandable manner. I make it required reading for all my Manufacturing Engineers, Department Managers and Supervisors.
Keep It Simple Stupid.......2007-01-12
Many books on lean manufacturing today try to over complicate things by adding in a lot of jargon and so called smarts. This book doesn't do that, and the the beauty is the reader really gets to the heart and soul of lean manufacturing with being bogged down by some academic trying to tell you how smart he is about it.
Joe's gets all the major points of the Toyota manufcaturing, and the way it puts in context makes it clear and easy to understand.
Useful book.......2007-01-05
This is a really simple, easy to read book for people who want to know things about manufacturing.
Simplistic but True.......2006-05-07
This book is simplistic in its approach, but it illustrates very well our society's tendency to overcomplicate processes to the point the original objective becomes almost unattainable.

Book Description
Memory enables us to make experience meaningful and to form coherent identities for ourselves and intelligible perceptions of others. Indeed, our ability to imagine, anticipate, and create the future is directly commensurate with our ability to retrieve and recollect past experiences.
But for all its vital importance in human cognition, for all that it seems so ordinary and obvious, memory remains in many ways as complex and mysterious today as it seemed to ancient philosophers. We need only to think about the "tip-of-the-tongue" experience to wonder how memories are formed, where they reside in our brains, and why some are retained, while others are forgotten. What is the difference between long- and short-term memory? Can memory be strengthened? Memories Are Made of This is an account of current memory science that offers answers to these and a host of other questions, comprehensively distilling much diverse and
rigorous science. It delves into the biology of memory functions and researches into the
mechanics and genetics of memory and the importance of emotions, particularly those resulting from trauma, in the memory process. Of special focus are investigations of cognition in other species. Are we the only animals who remember and forget? If not, are there commonalties in the memories of different species? The book also surveys our understanding of the effects of injury and disease on memory and concludes with an assessment of emerging pharmacological efforts to preserve and protect our memories and, in turn, ourselves.

Even Better.......2006-08-10
I keep books in two places, a small shelf near my computer that I can reach and a large bookshelf across the room. This book deserves a place on the small shelf within arm's reach.
Version 10 builds on the previous work and includes ISO 17799 outline format, policy coverage maps for Sarbanes-Oxley and coverage of the latest issues (technical, legal and regulatory.) I particularly appreciate the section on policy awareness. This is one of the biggest problems you run into.
If you are a manager, before you ever make a decision, or approve a policy, look the topic up, there is a good chance you will see something you didn't think of.
Let me give you an example, our company used to have a fairly long Non-Diclosure Agreement (NDA) prepared by our attorney for a specific purpose. However, we decided to create a simpler, general purpose NDA for all 1099 contractors. The lawyer created it and before I approved it I checked it against the book. I found three items that really should have been in our NDA that we would have missed, thank you Mr. Wood!
If you are a techie, do you need this book? Sure, because everything we do as a techie or engineer has liability implications for the company. Each topic is very clear, concise, and well thought out. It takes a few seconds to look it up, about two minutes to read the section and that investment is well worth your time.
Yes, this is an expensive book; however, it is worth the investment, every organization should have at least one copy. S.
Notes on ISPME version 10.......2006-01-25
Book is a very good resource on information security policies; however, I was disappointed that this book did not match ISO 17799 version 2005 it only matched the 2000 version. I would wait for the next version of the book for updated material matches for ISO 17799 v2005. The authors should have provided updates via CD ROM or download to support this necessary update to this version they have not. You would seem to think at $795.00 a pop for the book and CDROM you would get better support on the material in the book. Also pay close attention to the license uses of the security policies..
New version of a vital information security reference.......2005-08-17
In technology, books are often obsolete shortly after publication. Given the dynamic nature of technology, very few technology books can stand the test of time and remain relevant for a few years, let alone a decade after their original printing. Some of those rare titles that seem timeless include Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier, Security Engineering: A Guide to Building Dependable Distributed Systems by Ross Anderson, and the book I'll review here, Information Security Policies Made Easy, Version 10. Information Security Policies Made Easy (ISPME) is one of the most important information security books available for those who are serious about creating a comprehensive set of information systems security policies.
The importance of effective information security policies cannot be overemphasized, as they are the foundation toward implementing information security and ensuring the security of the people, systems, and networks within an organization. If an organization lacks security policies, they cannot inform employees and users of their specific security responsibilities. Policies define acceptable system use and user behavior, and those policies must be in place before they can be enforced.
Version 10 of ISPME contains more than 1350 pre-written security policies that can be used as a framework for the creation of a comprehensive set of information security policies. The book comes with a CD-ROM that includes every policy. The beauty of ISPME is that it removes the huge burden and time required to create a global set of security policies. With ISPME, you can immediately begin exploring the myriad policies required for information security.
One of the biggest mistakes you could make, however, when using ISPME, is to implement a policy too quickly, without deciding specifically how those policies with be selected, developed, deployed, maintained, and enforced. With that, Chapter 2 provides an orientation to the information security policy writing and development process. The books states that while it may be tempting to immediately start cutting and pasting policies together, it is crucial to understand both what the policies do and what you want to accomplish with them before you begin. If that is done, the subsequent policy writing tasks will be much more efficient and focused.
At 501 pages, Chapter 3 comprises the bulk of the book and contains the all of the specific policies. These policies are divided into 10 separate domains that are mapped to the ISO-17799 standard. This organization scheme makes it makes it easy to create a gap-analysis of your current policies against the ISO-17799 standard. This is helpful since many organizations are now embracing ISO-17799.
Each of the policies contain the individual policy itself and a detailed commentary on why the policy is specifically needed. Each policy also has a cross-reference to related policies and an indication of the audience (management, technical, end-user) and the security environment (low, medium, high) for which it is written.
Chapters 4 - 20 contain various high-level policies in areas such as mobile computing, data classification, email, Web security, and more. These 18 chapters are complete security policy documents that can be implemented with little customization.
The book contains 15 appendixes, which include secondary information such as awareness-raising methods, checklists, memos, and next steps to take.
The CD-ROM that is included contains the entire set of polices in HTML, Word, and PDF formats. It also includes two documents that map the policies in the book against HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley.
Organizations that take information security seriously will likely have used ISPME in its previous versions. But for those that have not yet taken the plunge, ISPME is a valuable tool that can be utilized to create a comprehensive set of information security policies in a cost- and time-effective manner. For those building corporate or organizational security policies, ISPME is clearly the definitive reference.

Excellent book.......2007-09-27
The book came just like it was supposed, but it was a little damaged. The damage does not effect the pages, so it will not be a problem. It happened to the cover and close to the binded part of the book.
life-saver.......2007-09-21
This book saved my life. It's full of easy mnemonics and I may have learned more from this book than my year-long class in medical school. I would definitely recommend it to any ambitious med student. You might try to read the antibiotics section for pharmacology as well. Money book!
A life saver.......2007-09-17
This book was invaluable for my Infectiuos Disease course. The pictures and phrases may seem cheesy sometimes, but its that silliness that really helps you remember.
great book.......2007-09-16
I'm using this book for my micro course and I've found it really helpful. This is the only textbook I use--it's easy and fairly quick to read, has great diagrams and pictures, and the summary charts at the end of the chapters are really great when reviewing for exams. I definitely recommend buying this book.

"Is it a fact--or have I dreamt it--that, by means of electricity, the world of matter has become a great nerve, vibrating thousands of miles in a breathless point of time?" If you, like Nathaniel Hawthorne, are kept up at night wondering about how things work--from electricity to can openers--then you and your favorite kids shouldn't be a moment longer without David Macaulay's The New Way Things Work. The award-winning author-illustrator--a former architect and junior high school teacher--is perfectly poised to be the Great Explainer of the whirrings and whizzings of the world of machines, a talent that landed the 1988 version of The Way Things Work on the New York Times bestsellers list for 50 weeks. Grouping machines together by the principles that govern their actions rather than by their uses, Macaulay helps us understand in a heavily visual, humorous, unerringly precise way what gadgets such as a toilet, a carburetor, and a fire extinguisher have in common.
The New Way Things Work boasts a richly illustrated 80-page section that wrenches us all (including the curious, bumbling wooly mammoth who ambles along with the reader) into the digital age of modems, digital cameras, compact disks, bits, and bytes. Readers can glory in gears in "The Mechanics of Movement," investigate flying in "Harnessing the Elements," demystify the sound of music in "Working with Waves," marvel at magnetism in "Electricity & Automation," and examine e-mail in "The Digital Domain." An illustrated survey of significant inventions closes the book, along with a glossary of technical terms, and an index. What possible link could there be between zippers and plows, dentist drills and windmills? Parking meters and meat grinders, jumbo jets and jackhammers, remote control and rockets, electric guitars and egg beaters? Macaulay demystifies them all. Book Description
The information age is upon us, baffling us with thousands of complicated state-of-the-art technologies. To help make sense of the computer age, David Macaulay brings us The New Way Things Work. This completely updated and expanded edition describes twelve new machines and includes more than seventy new pages detailing the latest innovations. With an entirely new section that guides us through the complicated world of digital machinery, where masses of electronic information can be squeezed onto a single tiny microchip, this revised edition embraces all of the newest developments, from cars to watches. Each scientific principle is brilliantly explained--with the help of a charming, if rather slow-witted, woolly mammoth.

Amazing.......2007-05-14
Informative and entertaining. I wonder how many engineers out there first got their interest in the way things work from this book.... In Fall 2008 Macaulay will have a new book out entitled "The Way We Work", which will explain the workings of the human body in similar fashion to this book. Can't wait!
Can't put it down.......2007-05-07
My son (10) had borrowed the older edition from the library several times. So I got him this one for his birthday. He sneaks this book into his bed at night. If that's not an excellent testemony I don't know what is.
Looking at Machines Differently.......2007-02-01
Each page of this book opens up a world of how something works. It could be how to make a hologram (of a wolly mammoth of course) or how the valves in a trumpet change the sound. The subject for a few pages might be electricity or it could be how an automatic transmission works. In any case, the pages are a mixture of drawings (usually with mammoth) showing the nature of the subject, combined with text that further describes what the drawings are showing.
Over a period of many years Mr. Macaulay has developed his drawing style and his understanding of mechanical things which when combined in a book like this offer a painless way for the kid in all of us to learn.
This new edition has been expanded in several areas. This includes coverage on personal computers, space probes and other more recent developments. It's one of those books that's hard to put down once you start reading.
GREAT BOOK.......2007-01-12
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER SEEN. IT IS EXCELLANT FOR ALL AGES.
One of the densest collections of basic knowledge about our mechanistic world.......2006-12-14
Imagine there were a nuclear war and all of society's accomplishments were annihilated and mankind became a savage race again. If you could have just one book saved through the ages to help you reestablish science and technology, pick this one.
