4 out of 5 stars Love, Love, Love It!!.......2007-10-11

I absolutely love this book. It helped me take my artwork from basic flat, no-life sketches to amazing photographic-like images. It is straight and to the point. It satifies that need for instant gratification. If you're like me where you often find yourself skipping pages to get to the juicy stuff, then this is the book for you. You'll see the changes in your drawings immediately.

2 out of 5 stars It wasn't a good book for me.......2007-09-06

I really tried to like this book but I just could not. Especially for someone who is new to drawing like myself it was a waste of money . This book is more suitable for an experienced artist.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Drawing Book I've Seen.......2006-07-27

This is the book that really helped me! The other one I like is the old standard "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." But for practical, usable exercises that will give you immediate results, this is definitely the book to have! Since I didn't have any of Hammond's previous books, there was no problem for me with repitition of material. I love that she is very specific in naming materials and explaining why she uses certain brands of materials vs. others. If you get only one drawing book, this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars FOR BEGINNER OR REVIEW.......2006-03-13

THIS BOOK IS BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN AND ILLISTRATED. FOR THE BEGINNER IT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND FUN TO LEARN. I RECOMMEND EVERYONE THAT WOULD LOVE TO DRAW TO GIVE THIS BOOK A TRY.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful .......2006-02-22

The book is quite awesome. I bought it just before I started taking a college art class and I find that it helps me more than the teacher does! I'm looking forward to buying more of Lee Hammond's books. I have already purchased her Lifelike Drawing and Drawing Realistic Pets: From Photographs, which are both equally awesome.

5 out of 5 stars love those books.......2007-08-09

I loved the kumon books.i run a preschool and use the book at my school. each page is full of color and that gets the kids more interested in completing the pages

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-05-13

I bought this book after having the "My First Book of Tracing" as a natural progression. My daughter absolutely loves it; we work on it almost every night.

5 out of 5 stars perfect for a 3 1/2 year old who likes mazes.......2007-05-08

My son loved this book so much he sat for a half hour mastering these mazes before he agreed to put it down. Definitely worth the money. I suggest parents make some copies of the pages before their child begins. Also, it would be nice it the publisher made it spiral bound.

5 out of 5 stars Really Easy Mazes.......2007-03-13

This is a good book for very young children (2+). There are a lot of really simple mazes (actually 80). Each maze is on an 8 1/2 x 11 page. The mazes get progressively harder, but they were all really easy for my three year old son. If I had let him, he would have finished a good portion of the book in just one sitting. As with all the Kumon workbooks, it is printed on good quality paper with colorful backgrounds. Also, there is a certificate of achievement in the back.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2006-06-06

My almost 3 yr old and I love this book along with My Book of Tracing and My First Book of Mazes. We work a bit in each one since they all start out with nice, easy pages. The mazes are *really* easy and start out as short paths for tracing before looking like actual mazes. We work both maze books using a bingo chip which she guides along like a little car. This has worked well for her since the last ones are too hard for her and she can continue to do mazes at her level by switching books and revisiting mazes.

4 out of 5 stars Want to know how - comic book guide.......2007-08-27

This is good for beginner and intermediate level artist. It will show you in a very simple way all the how-to's of pencilling. Good price also. It's part of three book set, Penciling, IOnking And Coloring comics - from DC comics

2 out of 5 stars Pencil Neck.......2007-07-06

I was hoping that this book would be a more detailed guide to penciling. Most of the illustrations were inked, though. It also has a LOT of text, which makes it not so easy to sit and read while trying to actually draw. I would recommend the "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way" over this book.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ADVICE FROM A PRO.......2007-03-31

I just received this book and immediately went to chapter fourteen. After reading chapter fourteen first I have to say that it was worth the price of the book.

2 out of 5 stars VERY Little Info on Penciling.......2005-09-30

I can't recommend this book, which falls firmly in the category of works aimed at milking the purses of comics-artist wannabes. It also teeters right on the edge of the stuff that seems driven by an urge to discourage potential competition from entering the field. Plus it doesn't have any valuable info on penciling!!! Mitch Byrd's "Notes to Draw From" is a better resource.

Klaus Janson has worked on some major DC titles and apparently also teaches at the School of Visual Arts. Here he seems to be trying to pad out grudgingly little info on penciling with a sort of "why comics require super skills to draw" pedagogy that consumes more than 110 pages of an essentially 142-page book!

There's some good info in here I suppose, but the technical stuff always needs to be taken with a large block of salt. No one ever became a great artist by studying art. People become great artists by doing what they enjoy! The way to become an artist is by creating art. As you encounter challenges you look for solutions to problems and develop. In that sense this book might be useful. B-S- statements like "Drawing... requires study" etc etc do more harm than good IMHO.

The most important thing for would-be comics artists to remember is that the most successful guys in the field are Matt Groening and Scott Adams. They didn't get to the top through their knowledge of anatomy! Frank Cho is a brilliant draughtsman, but "Liberty Meadows" will never have the kind of circ "Doonesbury" had - back when Garry Trudeau was drawing little better than stick figures!

There are lots of books written from a viewpoint of encouraging young artists to learn while supporting them through their inevitable frustrations. Look for those books before wasting your time with this.

3 out of 5 stars Useful.......2005-08-21

This is a useful guide no doubt, as with many other how-to books, however it's not at all the best I've seen.

I'd still recommend getting this book if you are an aspiring artist, because it's always important to stock a library of information within your field(s).

3 out of 5 stars Good Book a little to basic.......2007-03-19

I'm a professional 3D artist in Chile, i bought this book thinking that it's was going to be a big help to improve my working piplines but i think is better for students of 3D animation because is to general, but that doesnt mean that is a bad book, i think that it will help in some areas but in animation in general i recomend animation survival kit of Richard Williams.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Students!.......2007-02-15

Students of animation! This book is essential for your home or studio shelf. Animation From Pencils to Pixels is a comprehensive overview of animation production for the digital animator. As a text book it covers the lot - the mechanics of animation, funding your projects, the traditional aspects (yes, they're still important), new tools and methods, the business and copyright of your work, getting the concept and where to go with it. It is a classy tome well laid out and encourages you to read on easily. Other books on animation go into more depth concerning the specifics in animation but for an overall appreciation of the art and industry you can't go past this one. It is a good companion book to The Animator's Survival Kit (can I mention that?) which has more depth on the nitty-gritties of animated movement. My only criticism is the "I, I, I...." stance of the author. But with the profile and experience that Tony has there is a lot here to learn from, while in the early years of discovering the art of animating.

5 out of 5 stars Pencils and Pixels and Great Animation.......2006-11-11

Tony White is one of the best Animators and instructors writing books and sharing his knowledge on his website and in animation magazines. This is another great book by him. I enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot about digital cartoon animation. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars I still miss my pencil.......2006-11-07

Tony White's new book is a good bridge for us older animators making the transition from pencil and paper to pixels and Pixar. He outlines the whole process extremely well.
The only problem is that, these days, all the big studios are falling over each other to churn out digital animated features that look more and more the same.
Technology is all very well, but if it leads film makers to ignore the essential creative ingredients of story, story and more story, the whole animation industry will collapse like an overbaked souffle.
It might be unfashionable to laud the old Disney features these days, but they still stand head and shoulders over the current offerings.
I still miss my pencil.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome Book.......2006-11-04

I found this an easy to follow book. My son was thinking of a career in Animation and was looking to get a deeper insight into the subject. Well it certainly excited him to the point where he can't wait to begin studying. This book was so much fun and easy to follow. We all enjoyed it so much - you just have to read it! It is definitely a 'must have'.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Colored Pencil Book.......2007-05-24

This book has absolutely gorgeous drawings, something lacking in most of the other colored pencil books. It contains all the basics one would need to learn before picking up a colored pencil; everything from A to Z. The book is easy to read and fun. There are no lenghy discussions on the theories of the colored pencil medium: it gets right to the point. The second half of the book has detailed instructions on how to achieve certain textures, which I haven't seen in other books, such as glass, copper, silver, lace... all with absolutely jaw dropping examples. I bought it along with "Drawing for Right Side of the Brain", which makes a fantastic course on the mechanics of drawing itself. The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

3 out of 5 stars A partial solution at best.......2007-05-17

A better title for this book would be Color Pencil Solution Book for Realistic Still Life Drawing. People and animals have merely one or two appearances each among the examples, and land- and seascapes have no representation at all. It would have been an excellent reference to showcase multiple styles also, but we see only the work of the two authors, whose styles are very similar. The topics that are presented are well presented, and if realistic still life is your thing, this book will be a good resource. But if your interest is in multiple styles and landscapes or portraits, you'll often be looking elsewhere for solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful .......2007-03-08

There are so many ways to use colored pencil. I like Janie's work, she is so precise and accurate. This book helps you with various techniques. It's like a trouble shooter for your colored pencil art work.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous book.......2006-06-16

I have read many coloured pencil books, but this is the only one I have bought or kept. I refer to it often for ideas on how to combine colours or figure out a problem. Some might say that it isn't broad enough, but you have to be willing to take the basic ideas and develop your own solutions as well :-)

5 out of 5 stars Better than the $175 workshop I just attended!.......2005-04-19

I just paid $175 to attend a colored pencil workshop by a woman that I thought was going to really help me with my work instead she said that this book was what got her started. I found that 99% of what this woman taught in the class was ALL from this book I already owned!! So save yourself money on workshops from so-called "famous" teachers & invest in this book!! You won't be sorry & it will teach you so much!!!! By the way, the reviewer who wants a less realistic approach to cp , there are too many cp books out there like that already (Bet Borgeson, Michael Warr, & 2 Walter Foster ones).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Artists Sketchbook.......2005-07-28

This a well-round art technique and media book for any artist level. I have over 300 art tecnnique books. I considered this book exceptional. I would have given 5 stars, but the printing is too small. If you can read the ingredients on a tube of toothpaste, you will be able to read it. I had to purchase a plastic square magnifying sheet.

5 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2004-06-02

This book provides excellent examples in a variety of media. It is the kind of book I look for to provide my students with good examples, things to try out, and the quality they should strive for. If you are an absolute beginner there are other books that will provide you with more basic how-to information than this one does, though I personally think this book is very good in this area as well. I would recommend this book to those people already aquainted with sketching, but wanting to explore visual journaling and using a variety of media.

4 out of 5 stars for artists..........2002-04-02

This is a nice little book--very attractively designed and with lots of gorgeous sketches and samples. I think this book is for artists, though, not beginners. But beginners may find enough inspiration in the examples to want to investigate the techniques further.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book on How to Keep a Sketchbook!.......2001-11-27

This is a great book! It explains about keeping a sketchbook in various media, and how to use it to make finished drawings and paintings. Great for everyone, no matter how well you draw now.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-04-08

Excellent artwork in the book. Don't judge the artwork by the cover, or even the back. OPEN IT, the work gets better.

Don't let the title fool you either. The author/artist even says in his introduction that he is offering you a "...'GLIMPSE' into the versatile and vibrant medium..." He is basically wanting to show the reader that colored pencil can render high value artwork just as those created in oil. Just getting the recognition it deserves. So, that is where the artist/author is coming from.

It is not a step by step book or how to draw book. He explains some techniques and gives alot of verbal information about each work presented in the book. He gives you things to think about when you start to approach your own projects, as would a college art instructor. But gives you the freedom to create your own and be an individual and expressive. Instead of step-by-step how to do the exact artwork in the book, he shows you how to do your own artwork, and inspires you to do so. Much of the work in the book is his, but he does show other artists work as examples as well. There are many subjects covered which is great. The best way to like this book and learn from it, is to really READ it and study it.

He is guiding you, not holding your hand. So beginners, don't buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry, but Just Not Worth It..........2007-02-16

I've drawn casually for years, but when I finally got around to buying professional grade colored pencils, I wanted to learn specifically how to use them as a media. This was the first book I read on the subject, and it was a sore disappointment.

The author is a good artist, but the book does very little actual teaching. As someone else mentioned, it shows a lot of pictures of artwork and tells that they were made using certain techniques, but it never shows how to do it yourself.

What really bugged me was that there was a huge section just on the author's personal workshop--how he built it, what materials he used, even copies of the blueprints! How many casual art students are going to build their own studios, including tables and countertops and shelves and cupboards? It's obvious that the author is proud of what he did, and he has every right to be. But, he might have done well to write a separate book just on how to build and furnish your own studio, rather than wasting space he could have used to give instructions on how to draw with colored pencils.

Between that and all the examples of artwork with no instructions, it really seemed like the book was written more to show off the author's accomplishments, rather than teaching new artists. It might be better being read by someone who already has plenty of experience with colored pencils, but I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

If you're looking for good instructional books, try "Drawing and Painting with Colored Pencils" by Kristy Kutch, along with "The Colored Pencil Solution Book" by Janie Gildow & Barbara Benedetti.

1 out of 5 stars this really is a poor book.......2006-11-24

I always read the reviews before purchases and the very first one is as far as I got for this book. It said how great the book was and the person was speaking after purchasing a decent amount of books.

Well if I read a little further I would have read the negative one saying this book offers nothing.

THIS BOOK OFFERS NOTHING

It is just eye candy and not very much of it. All you see are pencil pictures and comments about them. This book teaches you nothing. It doesn't even go over how to do anything!! It just shows you pictures of what it is it is showing ex: this is a sample of texture.

Ok I knew that, but how did that happen? I wasn't looking for step by step although sometimes that helps out a lot.

This book was a complete waste.

Don't bother

5 out of 5 stars Excellent instruction .......2006-09-23

This is one of the excellent books on Colored Pencil fine art.I have read or used nearly a dozen of such books. The author gives a nice balance between skills/techniques and the fine art aspects to develop masterly paintings. The text is simple and easy to follow. The author being a portrait artist, the chapter on portraits is well written and valuable. The art work and the illustrations are very instructive.
I like the author not only exhibiting his own work, but a few selected paintings of well-known CP artists like Vera Curnow and Gary Greene.Another nice aspect is that the author does not endorse any particular brand of Colored pencils or support, thus commercialise book writing,as many authors do, but give sensible and technical suggestions. The book is a good buy for any serious CP artist.

2 out of 5 stars Little Substance in This Book.......2004-06-22

I have a personal library of over twenty books on colored pencil and unfortunately, this is the weakest book I own on the topic. There is very little on technique and there is a general lack of substance. If you are looking for an overview on colored pencil, there are far better books available. One that comes to mind is Exploring Colored Pencil by Sandra Angelo. And if you are looking for technique or practical information this book simply doesn't cut it.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-03-11

I got this book through another online retailer for half the price these U&N people are selling for. You just need to shop around.

I'm an artist, and I have a fondness for the Final Fantasy games. Final Fantasy IX was a challenge for me and after beating it, my claim is that it's the best in the series so far. After watching the last cutscene, I knew I had to have this book. I was very pleased when it arrived and have found it useful even today. FF9 is one of the most franchised game of the FF's(second to 7); I wouldn't waste that if you're a fan of it.

5 out of 5 stars FF9 fans will be pleased........2003-08-02

It's got all the characters, all the settings, all the fun. FF9 was my favorited in the series so I just had to get this homage to it. It's just fun to look at the sketches and rough-drafts and such. The town designs are really amazing.

If you're a fan of the FF series, anime, or just incredible art, I suggest you check this out.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Just Beautiful Drawings from the Best.......2003-02-12

I love Final Fantasy!! I have been a die hard fan since part one was released in 1990. There are several books out that show the visual effects from the Final Fantasy series, but this one is by far the best. It is strait forward, art, from the original designer of FF characters, Yoshitaka Amano. Page for page you will see the steps that he followed making this characters shine.

The main reason that I took one star away was because most of the art in this book is finished up designs from Amano. I am a very big fan of his work, ex. Vampire Hunter D, FF1-6,and 9 adn several other Japaneese work. I enjoy his early sketches better, they are much more fantasy like. But that does not mean that this collection is not beautiful as printed.

This is a beautiful editon to any Final Fantasy collecton or just plain art or drawings collection. Dont pass this up.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Art of Final Fantasy IX!!.......2002-09-10

When I bought this book, I expected mostly black and white photos and small screenshots from the game, but when I opened it up I was happily suprised with a book full of large, colorful artwork. Being a fan of the game series itself, this book especially appealed to me, as it probably would to many other FF players. But even those who do not play the game will find them selves impressed with the tons of fantastic artwork that fills its pages. I definitely recommened this book if you are a fan of the game or just love great art!

5 out of 5 stars Good buy for any artist, final fantasy fan..........2002-07-06

The Art of Final Fantasy IX shows off the artwork from the proclaimed video game. The book contains all types of artwork, from characters designs, transportation designs, backgrounds, enviorments, weapon designs, and 3D renders.

Whether you're a Final Fantasy fan or an artist with interest in seeing great character designs as well as enviorments, this is a great book to look at. It also shows off final renders of the characters in 3D. A must have for any animator's library.
