best CSS book ever written.......2007-06-09
By far the best CSS manual I've ever read and I've read many of them. The writing, style, examples.. everything is lucid, easy to read, easy to understand. Perfect. Thank you Mr. Griffiths.
A Superb Reference.......2007-05-12
Clear, concise, accurate. If I could only keep one CSS/XHTML book on my desk, this would be the one.
The author also provides an excellent website that builds on the topics covered in the book[...]

Cascading Style Sheets can put a great deal of control and flexibility into the hands of a Web designer--in theory. In reality, however, varying browser support for CSS1 and lack of CSS2 implementation makes CSS a very tricky topic. Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide is a comprehensive text that shows how to take advantage of the benefits of CSS while keeping compatibility issues in mind.
The book is very upfront about the spotty early browser support for CSS1 and the sluggish adoption of CSS2. However, enthusiasm for the technology spills out of the pages, making a strong case for even the most skeptical reader to give CSS a whirl and count on its future. The text covers CSS1 in impressive depth--not only the syntactical conventions but also more general concepts such as specificity and inheritance. Frequent warnings and tips alert the reader to browser-compatibility pitfalls.
Entire chapters are devoted to topics like units and values, visual formatting and positioning, and the usual text, fonts, and colors. This attention to both detail and architecture helps readers build a well-rounded knowledge of CSS and equips readers for a future of real-world debugging. Cascading Style Sheets honestly explains the reasons for avoiding an in-depth discussion of the still immature CSS2, but covers the general changes over CSS1 in a brief chapter near the end of the book.
When successfully implemented, Cascading Style Sheets result in much more elegant HTML that separates form from function. This fine guide delivers on its promise as an indispensable tool for CSS coders. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered:
- HTML with CSS
- Selectors and structure
- Units
- Text manipulation
- Colors and backgrounds
- Boxes and borders
- Visual formatting principles
- Positioning
- CSS2 preview
- CSS case studies
Book Description
Simply put, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is a way to separate a document's structure from its presentation. The benefits of this can be quite profound: CSS allows a much richer document appearance than HTML; CSS saves time--you can create or change the appearance of an entire document in just one place; and its compact file size makes web pages load quickly. Eric Meyer, a member of the CSS&FP Working Group and an internationally known expert on HTML and CSS, tackles the subject with passion and delivers a comprehensive and thorough update to his groundbreaking book. All readers will benefit from both the depth and breadth of his experience and his clear and honest style. Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is a thorough review of all aspects of CSS2.1 and a comprehensive guide to CSS implementation. The book includes new content on positioning, lists and generated content, table layout, user interface, paged media, and more. It explores in detail each individual CSS property and how it interacts with other properties, and shows how to avoid common mistakes in interpretation. If you're ready to take the next step with your HTML coding and incorporate CSS or are already a CSS code warrior, you'll find Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is the book you've been craving.

A reference book, not a how-to.......2007-06-16
This book is not an explanation or tutorial of how to make beautiful pages with CSS. I think the people who give it below 3 stars may have been looking for that, and instead they should try CSS Mastery: Advanced Web Standards Solutions. This book IS, however, a complete reference to all CSS properties and values, and also contains some valuable tips on browser behavior and bugs. If I'm coding along and forget what all the possible values are for list-style-type, this is the book I reach for.
from Eric Myer (the man!) comes a must-have for anyone using CSS.......2007-03-30
This is the 'go-to' reference for me. The truly ultimate guide to CSS from one of the construct's primary innovators and authors. Mr. Meyer is the most knowledgeable person in the field of CSS, browser compatibility and all around HTML design.
was a great book a couple of years ago.......2007-01-17
Probably a bit out of date at this point. For me, this book wasn't that useful, since I generally refer to the W3C site for information about CSS. But it's a nice desk reference, and a standard tool for almost all CSS developers. There's probably a new version out by now to address all the developments that have happened in the past couple of years, I would look for that (or wait until one comes out, it won't be long).
Good, thorough step-by-step guide.......2007-01-07
I had done some work with style sheets, but was confused bythe terms and had no idea what they can do. This book completely changed what I can do when I design web sites. It'sa real eye-opener and a great reference.
Book Description
Cascading style sheets are one of the most important technologies on the web today, giving web developers the power to style their web sites so they are usable, lean and small in file size, look great, display consistently across most if not all web browsers, and are quick and efficient to change the look of if desired.
There are many books out there on CSS, but this one is different—it wastes less time discussing theory, and gets straight to the practical learning, giving the reader what they need to know quicker. In addition, it is bang up to date, covering the most modern CSS standards and design techniques.
As well as all the essential CSS basics, advanced techniques are covered, such as accessibility, hacks, and filters, and the book concludes with a case study, and a CSS reference section to allow the reader to look up required syntax as quickly as possible.

A good primer - more for the novice than intermediate/advanced readers.......2007-09-21
This is one of the first books I have bought sight unseen, based on the reviews. I was a little disappointed that it didn't have more advanced information. This book is a primer. As a primer it does a good job covering the basics of CSS and how to write good code, but doen't expect to learn complete mastery of CSS from this book.
I understand CSS now!.......2007-09-14
When I bought the Sams CSS book, I was worried that I would never understand CSS, it was written poorly, etc. Then I came on here and saw that many other people who seem to know what they are talking about had the same things to say about it, and a few people recommended this book.
Am I ever glad that I checked the reviews for that book!
This is a great technical book. It's not written pretentiously, and it's not meant for a robot to read, unlike some technical books I've seen. This book was really interesting to read, and helped me to understand some of the important CSS techniques that I did not understand after reading through the other CSS book.
I am now very interested in CSS, and plan to buy another CSS book, but a more advanced book. Hopefully, I will have as much luck with that book as I have with this one! Thanks Simon Collison, for writing such an awesome book, you are my CSS hero! :D
Excelent css book.......2007-08-27
I have read this book and it's great, although I am not quite a beginner even I found this book very useful. But after You read this book and want to expand your css knowledge you should buy a CSS Mastery not like me Pro CSS Techniques. You will see that author of this book is co-author of CSS Mastery . This two books are "must" for entering css world :)
Helped me update my website.......2007-08-13
This book helped me turn my 'nothing' website into a better-organized and more attractive one. It is also a fun read!
ok, but not great.......2007-07-20
I've used a lot of "teach yourself" books in the past, and this one is not as clear as many others out there. It does a good job walking you through a lot of the technicalities of CSS, but the author flips between changing HTML code and CSS code and often times it's unclear as to which one he wants you to change. He could take a lesson from Lynda Weinman's HOT (hands on training) books. . .they're really dumbed down, but when you're stuck, being able to go back and see the step by step of even the simplest things, "open file A: now insert "x" in this exact location" is really helpful. This book left me wanting to do more exercises, read less, and wishing I had bought another book.

Imagine having an opulent compilation of history's most elegant and beautiful patterns and designs at your fingertipsto use, peruse, admire, and be inspired by. Adapted from historical items dating back to antiquity, such as jewelry, tiles, stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, textiles, and ceramics, these ornamental designs encompass a wide range of cultural aesthetics including classic Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Etruscan motifs, Asian and middle-Eastern patterns, as well as European designs from medieval times through the 19th century. Artists, historians, and art lovers will appreciate this lavish idea book, and interior designers and patternmakers will be delighted that all of the ornamental designs may be used and reproduced without restriction! Customer Reviews:
beautiful...........2007-01-25
A simply beautiful book in all aspects of the word. Between the book and CD-Rom, worth every penny. Beautiful.
a huge disappointment.......2007-01-24
very expensive and about as inspiring as a book of wallpaper samples. I use this book to keep my cat from going under the loveseat. Sorry, but why don't you buy the cabinet of natural curiosities instead? that's about a thousand times better.
If you want to save some money. . ........2007-01-14
Then check out Dover Publication's "Full-Color Picture Sourcebook of Historic Ornament: All 120 Plates from "L'Ornement Polychrome" and "Racinet's Historic Ornament in Full Color" since Taschen's book is basically just an oversized version of these modestly priced books. Of course, you'll have to scan and manipulate photos yourself since the Dover versions don't come in any digital format.
Heavy Duty .......2007-01-12
This book is heavy. Literally it must weigh 20lbs. It is also heavy with amazing content and incredible beauty and erudite commentary. The DVD is worth purchase price alone giving so much royalty free content. Look for tons of wrapping paper featuring these images to appear in stationary shops.
The best coffee table book ever !!!.......2006-08-17
Recently I have found myself drawn to graphics of all kinds. Being a huge fan of Tashen books and seeing this book on their website I decided to order it. Now at $200.00 this was quite a big purchase but this book is incredible. The color plates are beautiful and the information about the designs is very complete as well as interesting. This is a huge book! I think it must weigh in the neighborhood of 10 lbs. It is not a book to take to the beach for a little read. However, it is a book to get inspired by and it will inspire you no matter what your art medium is. This is a book that I will tresure for years to come and I am sure if you decide to invest in this book you will not be disapointed.
Book Description
There are several other books on the market that serve as in-depth technical guides or reference books for CSS. None, however, take a more hands-on approach and use practical examples to teach readers how to solve the problems they face in designing with CSS - until now. Eric Meyer provides a variety of carefully crafted projects that teach how to use CSS and why particular methods were chosen. The web site includes all of the files needed to complete the tutorials in the book. In addition, bonus information is be posted.
Customer Reviews:
Look over a Master's shoulder.......2006-07-29
Awesome learn by example book IF you already have a little background in CSS, and even then if your knowledge is elementary you might be lost on some of the finer points. If it had a little more theory and explanations it would be a killer book, but I guess Eric Meyer didn't have patience enough for that. He is anyway a Master in CSS styling, no doubts about that, and the right author too look at for learning and inspiration. The book is structured around several projects that you see in the various developing stages from beginning to end in reasonably small steps. The explanations of what's going on are like what you would expect from a guru/designer/artist that is, far from complete and basic. Again is like you had the chance to peek over Eric's shoulder while he works, but he won't be bothered to lose too much of his time after you. But don't get me wrong, this book is a must have for anyone interested in CSS, even if I would not buy it now (it starts being a bit dated) but would wait for his next book that should come out this autumn.
Second to none!.......2006-06-06
I wanted a quick crash course in CSS; instead this book gave me a comprehensive start that led me on a path to a solid foundation in designing with Cascading Style Sheets.
Attention to details, comprehensive and professional writing style, and superior clarity are just some of the strengths of this book. I only wish that more IT books were as easy to read as this one.
Good reference about CSS.......2006-04-26
The first seen this book seems one more technical guide about CSS, but to the first contact realizes that it is a great reference based on needs to everyday of the web designer.
The book starts boarding how to initiate layout HTML transition for layout hybrid (still with the tables use but of optimized way), and with that goes gradually preparing the reader to think and to create the such wished Layout CSS (Tableless).
Besides talking about CSS he shows how to conceive a semantically correct code HTML and thus obtain a more organized and accessible structure.
This book boards the structure and presentation separation concept, positioning CSS, columns in CSS, leaves creation of alternative style, forms and effects presentation in links, lists and images.
The book Eric Mayer on CSS is one of the best references about CSS who already I saw, and can tell that he is indispensable in the web designer library.
Learn how to give your HTML a make over.......2006-04-21
Before skimming through "Eric Meyer on CSS" I expected an introductory level CSS tutorial book that would provide readers with step-by-step instructions on how to create efficient CSS layouts. The back cover lists standard concepts that are covered in the book in addition to an accurate depiction of Eric Meyer's professional experience level and expert ability with CSS [...]. Yet, after reading the introduction and beginning the first few chapters, I quickly learned this book is ideal for persons with a solid foundation in HTML and at least a basic understanding of CSS. For example, project 1 (i.e. chapter 1) illustrates how to remove HTML markup and replace it with CSS layout, but does not go into detail about the HTML markup and mentions CSS properties/terminology as a side note rather than main point.
I think a major selling point of "Eric Meyer on CSS" is its excellent project based approach to CSS; each project can be completed in a single session and built my proficiency and confidence upon chapter completion. Additionally, the chapter layout is quite organized and easy to follow with full support and completed files available from the book's website. For example, the necessary steps for each project are incorporated into the main body of the text with illustrations and easily identifiable code. Go to the website to double check for accuracy or help troublshoot your work. Definitions, clarifications, warnings, and sample code links are neatly laid out in the columns to the side of the text's main body. Depending upon your comfort level of CSS, it is easy to skip around chapters and projects or work straight through.
An inconveniencing aspect of this book is that the CSS is difficult to reference. While the index lists the page numbers to CSS functions, the CSS is incorporated into any number of projects/tutorials, which may or may not be useful for the task you are performing. This book transforms HTML pages into CSS efficient pages; this is a positive consistent quality throughout "Eric Meyer on CSS", but it may have less relevance for people wishing to create HTML + CSS pages from scratch. In future versions of this book, I think it would be interesting to note layout differences between HTML versions and include CSS for XHTML.
Overall, I found "Eric Meyer on CSS" a transformational book for HTML and CSS and I give it the highest possible rating. I recommend this book to anyone with a serious interest in CSS or who may use CSS on a quasi regular basis. It is a fine addition to any level (i.e. introductory, intermediate, advanced) CSS library or small collection. Essentially this book taught me how to do professional quality HTML "make overs" with CSS in a manner of speaking; it taught me how to convert HTML pages into more efficient and attractive pages using CSS.
CSS Case Study Book.......2006-04-10
Being a fan of Eric Meyer's previous book on CSS, I was pretty keen on what to expect from 'Eric Meyer on CSS: Mastering the Language of Web Design' in terms of quality. Mr. Meyer's original CSS book was a top notch piece of work when it first came out, and it's a great book today. Like HTML books, there are lots of options available to people if you want to learn how to develop CSS book from a design perspective, but there are not many books out there that look at the subject from a case study point of view.
Look no further.
In the author's book, he takes exactly this route, defining 13 projects, and the nuts of bolts of each one of these projects as it relates to CSS design. Headlined by full color pages and clear, concise writing, this is a book that is easy to read and enjoyable to follow.
The problem is that the things that make this book so unique are also its weakness.
While a case study approach sounds good on paper and it IS interesting, the fact that unless you plan to copy the exact design that Mr. Meyer is using, this text is little more than just a nice reference to relate to. Being different doesn't mean one is wrong, but unless the reader knows what to expect, they might be disappointed by this text.
What this book IS: a case study book that points out different uses of CSS on web pages, highlighting certain tips and tricks that were put to use to get the desired effect
What this book IS NOT: a reference book or a learning tool of how to get CSS working with web pages. This book fully expects the reader to have some understanding/experience of CSS, and they are looking to get further education beyond the bachelor's degree in CSS that they already got (perhaps from reading CSS: The Definitive Reference).
Nice book, but different. Keep that in mind when considering purchasing this text.

They had faces then, in the golden age of Hollywood when a publicity photo could make or break a star. The visual power of George Hurrell's portraits, with their Rembrandtesque lighting and dramatic poses, shaped the careers of such stars as Joan Crawford, Jean Harlow, and Jane Russell, and did as much or more to establish them as their film performances. Mark Vieira, who adopted Hurrell's techniques and uses them to this day, explains how the master portraitist lit and retouched his photographs--a portrait of Crawford before and after retouching reveals what an artist the one-time painter really was--and analyzes their impact.
Customer Reviews:
An American Icon.......2007-08-25
George Hurrell is universally acknowledged THE Hollywood portrait photographer, the man who recreated during the talkies much of the mystery of the silent stars through his breathtaking photographs. At a time when the finest still photography was becoming more incisive and natural, Hurrell managed to balance this new naturalism and directness in highly manipulated ways, producing in his best work iconic images of the great stars of MGM. After the second World War his work became largely passe, appearing too contrived and built up for an age demanding grit and spontaneity and an off-hand naturalness.
This work seeks to both show and tell the story of Hurrell's highwater era as not only the major photographer of the stars, and MGM in particular, but also his development as artist. Breathtaking photographs fill the volume - Harlow on a polar bear skin rug, her gown glowing a burnished white against the softer fur while all around her Hurrell captures an infinite play of lighting, the entire amazing and unrepeatable, a dream world evoked out of the irridescent sheen of an infinity of microscopic silvery gifts left by the platinum negative; Norma Shearer transformed from attractive but doughty into a timeless vamp, surpassing her silent film predecessors with an electric sexuality never before captured on still film; Joan Crawford, Hurrell's great muse at the top of his game, seen in powerful forceful images, unrelenting in their hold on an Apollonian authority.
Hurrell's flamboyant personality, his novel and sometimes off-putting behavior during shootings, seems now unfortunately taken as role template by many lesser fashion photographers. In his day and at his height during the late twenties through the beginnings of World War II Hurrell dominates a demanding and highly accomplished professional field.
Whether you live in a sumptious penthouse overlooking Central Park, need a single book for the coffee table in the living room of that restored Neutra you just purchased, or just enjoy reasonably priced fashion books, Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits fits the bill. At a significantly reduced price its a lovely reminder of one of the nicer advantages of democratic publishing: not every fine art book is a prohibitively expensive limited edition printed by a small press.
As a glamour photographer myself..........2007-04-13
As a glamour photographer myself, this is a book I own and use for inspiration. I love the way Hurrell not only captures the inner-beauty of the subjects, but his photojournalistic approach. I often graze through this book as I've read it many times over--the grazing gets me going when it comes to my own glamour photography. I recommend anyone interested in this book, buy it now! If you'd like to see how it's affected my career, also check out the following books, Garage Glamour: Digital Nude and Beauty Photography Made Simple, Rolando Gomez's Glamour Photography: Professional Techniques and Images and even a book where I have a chapter, Professional Portrait Lighting: Techniques and Images from Master Photographers (Photo Pro Workshop series) This book should not only be on a collector's list, but for any student of photography--we're always learning no matter what level your photography. ---Rolando Gomez, contributing writer, Studio Photography magazine
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL.......2006-08-19
This book -- how beautiful. I have photography books by several of the great portrait photographers of the 20th Century, and this one is the best. There are a wealth of photographs, and the story of Hurrell's life is also interesting. If you ever thought about seriously learning about photography and taking some good pictures, this book will take any hesitation out of your mind. Gorgeous!!
Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits.......2006-07-25
This book is everything I expected. The pictures are great and the text very informative. I am enjoying it very much and it is a valued addition to my film library.
EXCELLENT BOOK! Vieira's mastery of the written word brings that era to life........2005-12-03
I thoroughly enjoyed browsing through and then reading this beautiful tribute to the legendary work of George Hurrell. As compelling as Hurrell's photos are it is the author's indepth knowledge and understanding of Hollywood and Hurrell that set this book apart.
Mark Vieira's own photographic artistry is based on Hurrell's techniques, providing current-day enthusiasts with authentic glamour photography of their own.
Book Description
Build Your Own Website The Right Way Using HTML & CSS teaches web development from scratch, without assuming any previous knowledge of HTML, CSS or web development techniques. This book introduces you to HTML and CSS as you follow along with the author, step-by-step, to build a fully functional web site from the ground up.
However, unlike countless other "learn web design" books, this title concentrates on modern, best-practice techniques from the very beginning, which means you'll get it right the first time. The web sites you'll build will:
Look good on a PC, Mac or Linux computer
Render correctly whether your visitors are using Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, or Safari
Use web standards so your sites will be fast loading and easy to maintain
Be accessible to disabled users who use screenreaders to browse the Web
By the end of the book, you'll be equipped with enough knowledge to set out on your first projects as a professional web developer, or you can simply use the knowledge you've gained to create attractive, functional, usable and accessible sites for personal use.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent choice for a novice........2007-09-10
edit:
The title of this book should be Xhtml, the author pushes xhtml as the only correct way to build a web site. As I learn more I am finding out this is not true, there are many experts who, in fact feel just the opposite. I still like this book, and I would still recommend it, but before you get all hung up on xthml and standards verification, you might want to read some opposing views, they are not hard to find!
/edit
This book will take you from 'uh, what's an html' to a completed product, even some material for those not fluent in windows. Includes a primer on graphics also. May also be of use to someone who has some limited experience building websites the wrong way. (that would be me ;) )The book follows the author's example building a site, with occasional forays into concepts not directly related to the example site. More experienced developers may find this book a bit too noobish, but it's not meant to be a reference book, it's a tutorial. The writing style is interesting and shows just enough humor.
The best way to jumpstart your knowlage of CSS and creating standards comliant websites.......2007-09-10
This book was one of the best purchases I could have made to get my website project off the ground. I personally know html 4.0, but am not as failure with the new html and xhtml standards. Well that was true until I read this book.
Ian Lloyd writes in a way that I found to be very easy to access the information and to understand it. You can also go right to the subject that you need at any time for a project by looking at the table of contents. I found the book to be a quick read and it very quickly emerged me in enough knowledge to convert my site over to CSS with little effort.
Overall I am a big fan of the Site Point books, they make it easy to learn how to make standards compliant websites and the format that the books are printed in is very accessible.
I recommend two other Site point books after reading this one for further web development. I am currently reading both to create a better layout than my current one on my site. Both are by Rachel Andrew and go very well with this book by Ian Lloyd.
HTML Utopia: Designing Without Tables Using CSS
The CSS Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & Hacks
If you already have a fair knowledge of CSS you may be tempted to bypass this book and go straight to the more in depth design books like the two I mentioned above. However if you are not failure with site standards compliance or xhtml, you may want to purchase Ian Lloyd's book anyways. HTML Utopia does a good job of introducing CSS and covers site compliance, but Lloyd covers it more in depth.
Decent introductory book.......2007-08-31
It's pretty good at the introductory level. Don't buy it if you are looking for more in depth treatment with ready to use patterns and practical tips. I wish the author skipped trivial stuff like how to open and save files in windows notepad or how to refresh your browser window.
Excellent book.......2007-08-29
I've read alot of technical books over the years and this is easily one of the best. Well-written, focused, and organized, it imparts its lessons in an interactive manner, creating a mythical web site as you work your way through the book. I would highly recommend it for someone who wishes to learn how to create HTML pages using CSS to handle the presentation.
The Perfect Resource for Non-Geeks.......2007-07-08
This book is an outstanding resource for anyone who wants a thorough introduction to HTML and CSS! I purchased it when I was first learning (and using) HTML and CSS. It was definitely my preferred resource throughout that process. Now, I keep it nearby as a handy reference tool. It's very easy to read, it's well organized, and it offers a seemingly endless array of examples so that you can see exactly how a particular task is best handled. There are a few rapidly changing issues covered in the book that are not quite current (such as the section on "link swapping"). However, I definitely recommend this book for anyone with a need to learn basic HTML and CSS.

Book Description
Window shopping
In postwar America, everything pointed to a bright, shiny future. Sheer optimism and opulence informed everything from automobile design to architecture, infusing design with larger-than-life planes and curves. Storefront design of the era is particularly indicative of this phenomenon, incarnated here in an extensive collection of hand-illustrated shop window designs from 1938 to 1950. These spectacular, often grandiose plans for grocery stores, shoe shops, beauty salons, bakeries, and more are reminders of a time when stores were sacred shrines for the congregation of American shoppers--impressive and even slightly intimidating, just like the future itself. Collected for this unique book, the designs viewed in retrospect reveal the mindset of a unique period in history. In addition to an extensive selection of drawings are historical black and white photographs of actual shops built in a similar style. Shop America offers a rare look at mid-century commercial America as it pictured itself.
Customer Reviews:
disappointing.......2007-06-16
I was disappointed in this book. The best picture is the one on the cover. Inside, each selection is pretty much the same. "Style suggestion for a florist shop," "Style suggestion for a shoe store," etc. Has diagrams and font types, window measurements, etc. All tech stuff that's not really interesting to me. I would have returned it, but didn't want to mess with the shipping. Sigh.
American Business Embraces Modernism.......2007-04-29
In the midst of the Great Depression, American Business adopted an American form of modernism that heralded a new age of technology and progress. This period of design history is sometimes called, "Machine Age", "Streamline Modern" or "Midcentury Modern." This belief in the spirit of progress can be seen in almost all American design of this period.
"Shop America" adds to our understanding of the time by focusing on store front design. American glass companies produced beautifully illustrated catalogs that promoted the use of glass and modern building materials. These catalogs inspired architects and small business owners to create store fronts that embraced the progressive spirit of modernism.
When many of us think of the 1940's and 1950's, we think of a conformist age best understood by old television shows like Ozzie and Harriet and Father Knows Best. However, a book like "Shop America" also demonstrates that American business and consumers of the time were willing to adopt a bold modernist vision. Although the designs in these books are 50-60 years old, they are still very fresh and exciting.
This book was produced by the German Publisher, Taschen. Like all Taschen books it is a very good value. It is a large format book with very high production values. This book is a must purchase for all enthusiasts of the period as well as for contemporary architects and designers. Highly recommended.
Streamline meets Atomic on Main.......2007-03-18
Turn the pages of this fascinating book and you're window shopping on Main Street in the late forties, plenty of consumer goods are just a touch away thanks to large glass windows. The essence of the book is more than ninety ideas for storefronts created by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company. Each has an artists rendering, sometimes a technical detail or floor plan and technical information about the glass used.
It is the exuberant artwork that makes the book come alive. They capture a mid-century of elegant shoppers seduced by Carrara glass and Aluminum. Virtually every store has an overall streamline design frequently mixing atomic motifs and the final individual touch is the name in a modern sans type or a casual script for a ladies retail unit. Strangely there is no actual reference to the Pittsburgh PGC or the artists though E A Lundberg has his signature on many of the illustrations.
This is a large book (handsomely designed and printed) that fortunately makes all the wonderful renderings large too. In the first few pages Steve Heller contributes an overview of storefront design illustrated with black and white photos of real stores in large American cities. Predictably few of them are as flamboyant as the concept artwork in the glass-makers sales material.

Book Description
This chronologically organized introduction to the Western Humanities (art, music, history, literature, and drama) establishes the historical context of each era before the arts are discussed. The Western Humanities is also available in two separate volumes: Volume I covers prehistory through the Renaissance; Volume II covers the Renaissance to the Present. More than 600 illustrations appear throughout the text, and Personal Perspectives boxes bring to life the issues and events of the day.

New Book.......2005-09-13
I believe this was a new book. It wasn't marked up or anything like that, the cover was just bent a bit, which may have happened during shipping. Other than that, no complaints! :)
Review of THE WESTERN HUMANITIES.......2000-04-25
This book is an excellent resource for college students interested in humanities. This was the text used for my Humanities class. It was very easy to read and I was able digest the material covered without falling asleep. The photos are excellent and the captions are detailed. This is an excellent book well worth the asking price.
