Book Description

Incisive analyses of mass media – including such forms as talk shows, MTV, the Internet, soap operas, television sitcoms, dramatic series, pornography, and advertising—enable this provocative new edition of Gender, Race and Class in Media to engage students in critical mass media scholarship. Issues of power related to gender, race, and class are integrated into a wide range of articles examining the economic and cultural implications of mass media as institutions, including the political economy of media production, textual analysis, and media consumption.

Ten new, original essays are included in this text, along with compelling previously published articles and book chapters by both established media scholars and new voices in the field. Together with new section introductions by Gail Dines and Jean Humez, the readings provide a solid yet accessible critical introduction to mass media studies.

Features:

Original essaysand important reprinted articlesfrom renowned scholars comprise this comprehensive and diverse volume . Work in cultural studies and queer theory is made accessible to undergraduate students . Extensive bibliography and media resources encourage conscientious activism. Race is examined throughout the text rather than treated in a separate chapter.

New to the Second Edition:

  1. Expanded coverage of "queer" representations in mass media
  2. New section introductions provide readers with a guide for each section
  3. New section on the violence debates and a new section on the Internet
  4. Two sections devoted to consumerism, marketing, and advertising

Recommended for courses in mass media, feminist theory, race, class, and gender, and social theory in the Sociology, Communication, and Women’s Studies disciplines. Also recommended as a general reference title for scholars and anyone interested in the representation of race, class, and gender in the media.

3 out of 5 stars Wow... are we not spellchecking or editing books anymore??.......2007-06-21

First, let me say that the premise of each article was great for a 400- or 500-level college course and prompted many heated discussions.

But, along the lines of the other reviewer... how are we to take it seriously when we come across dozens of grammatical errors, missing words (the most prevalent error) and punctuation disasters? It read as though the articles were submitted, read by a third-grader and then stuffed hurriedly into the book for publication. A quick read by the "editors" would have found the vast majority of errors.

This is not something isolated, for 3 out of the 4 textbooks I have been assigned this summer session have dozens (yes, "dozens") of grammatical, typographical and punctuation disasters -- books well into their 2nd, 4th and 7th editions. No wonder kids graduating college habitually spell "too" as "to."

Fix the errors before you print the third edition!

2 out of 5 stars Fair information, edited by a twit........2004-02-15

I could not finish reading the book, because I could not take the authors seriously. The many misspellings and mechanical errors were far to distracting. This text is a worthy example of how NOT to write a book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse for post-modern media theory........1999-09-14

As the media becomes one of the most dominant means by which we frame our social reality, it becomes crucial for each of us to understand how media can become a mean to someone's own end. An excellent treatment of hegemony and dominant/ prefered readings. This should be a required text in all communication/ social science programs. But it ain't bad readin' for anyone else who consumes media either, namely you!

5 out of 5 stars Media, stereotypes, white ideologies, marginalization........1999-01-11

An excellent reader explaining the media's role in perpetrating common stereotypes of historically marginalized people. Includes analysis of advertising, sexual representation, TV and music. An excellent textbook for cultural studies.

4 out of 5 stars best text reader ever for my communication major.......1998-12-06

broad and complete view point on the issues that face college critics in media fields. Most comprehensive text I have been required to buy with my major. Would highly recommend to other prof.s

Book Description

This grammar offers a completely new approach to the study of Sanskrit, aimed at students with no previous specialist knowledge of the categories of grammar. It is a stimulating and infectious approach, designed to cultivate rapid and lasting enthusiasm for Sanskrit.
Important features of the work are the use of connected passages for exercise which are intrinsically more interesting and challenging than the unrelated sentences found in other grammars; the great deal of attention given to the explanation of the Devanagari system; and the extensive appendices and glossaries in a separate volume.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars way too much vocab per chapter!!!.......2007-07-31

This book has great explanations; it's a good grammar with good stories. BUT, there's about 80-100 words to learn per chapter! How could anyone possibly absorb this? There is a Thomas Egenes book out there and another book called Samskrtam Subodhini: a Sanskrit Primer. These two books are your best choices, the former being slow and divided up into two books and the latter being quick paced with a lot of vocab at times but also with a lot of exercises. I went to the library and took a look at this book and was disappointed. It seems most people that study a language are going to want a decent vocabulary but it's not going to happen when there are mountains of it to learn at a time. Save your money for a good Sanskrit Reader like Lanman after you're done with one of the two I've already suggested. You'll be happier and still have a few bucks to spare.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK FOR LEARNING SANSKRIT.......2007-07-30

This is by far the best book for learning Sanskrit. Every lesson has an excellent introduction to grammar and the notes always give a curious aspect of Indian culture, plus the texts are very well presented. I've tried dozens of manuals and am every day more grateful with Mr. Maurer. His explanations are always clear and charming. The only thing a solitary student may regret is that this manual has no key to the exersises. But if you work hard (which you always should do if you want to learn Sanskrit) you will see all the answers you need are within the manual, and all the words and grammar tables you need are available in the second volume. Coulson's "Teach yourself Sanskrit" has keys, but the grammar is very dense. Maurer's method comes in 2 parts and is expensive, but is really really worth it. You will enjoy learning this enchanting language very much.

5 out of 5 stars THE Sanskrit Beginner's Book!.......2006-04-01

In my opinion as a Sanskrit teacher there is simply no better text ever written. As other reviewers have noted the content, the high quality of the Devanagari font etc. make this a sine qua non for the beginning student. To Prof. Mauer I say: "Uttamam!"

5 out of 5 stars Superbly writtten........2003-02-03

I love this book for its organization, its exercises, and its explanations. It makes learning Sanskrit easy, and is evidently a labor of love by it author.

5 out of 5 stars The Joy of Sanskrit.......2000-02-19

I have seen a few others and tried using one of them, but this set by Maurer is easily the best I have come across. The script is easy to read and the grammar is carefully presented to make it possible for the beginner to start using and enjoying the language immediately. Additionally, the second volume provides a historical overview of the language and other Indo-European tongues, all the conjugational and declensional paradigms, and a two-way dictionary for easy reference. It's expensive - the author sacrificed his royalties to force the publishers into a hardcover - but well worth the money.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars You need this if you are studing Reading Greek on your own........2006-02-08

If you are using JACT's Reading Greek to learn Greek, you need this book. I wholeheartedly reccomend this series, as it is the best reading method Greek series I could find.

Since I took a year of Greek in college, I'm not so much learning Greek as getting reacquainted. But I took the class ten years ago, so naturally, I had forgotten lots.

I started by reviewing the first chapters in Reading Greek, but I quickly realized that I needed more than just what the text and grammar/exercise book could supply together.

Luckily this book exists. It's design for each chapter really helps. First it presents some words and phrases which might be a bit sticky--I check here before I even try to read a new section. Then I read the Greek section in the text. Then I come back to the Independent Study Guide, check the English translation section to see if I understood what I read. And I am faring much better now.

4 out of 5 stars Helas - not quiet as good as Reading Latin..........2005-10-15

This course package is rather nice and still the most comprehensive, compact, well-rounded and historically-oriented, well-balanced introductory greek course. BUT IT IS ONLY FOR STUDENTS WHO CAN STUDY ON THEIR OWN AND KNOW HOW TO HELP THEMSELVES (E.G. READ A GRAMMAR GUIDE)
Having studied Latin with Reading Latin by CUP, I found this course to be somewhat less sophisticated. I would still choose this course over any other course available with English as an instructional language, it is profound, unpretending, the linguistics side is solid, the stories interesting and neither too light nor too long. Combining the text book and the grammar/exercise book into one compendium would improve the usability of the course. I also recommend that more exercises be added in the next edition. A better layout would also help, including larger font size. Still a best buy. The selection of texts is one of its strong points: not everyone who studies Greek wants to delve into Mythology, insurance fraud is a real life topic, here packaged in a very funny, capturing story. If you learned Russian and remember the story of the Marsman in the GUM, here are more stories that will stay in your memory for a long time.

3 out of 5 stars The patch you need for "Reading Greek".......2002-09-19

"Reading Greek" was first published in two volumes: the TEXT and the GRAMMAR, VOCABULARY AND EXERCISES. "An Independent Study Guide to Reading Greek" was subsequently published to patch up the shortcomings of the original volumes (which could not be easily reprinted with corrections because they are so interrelated). The authors - a committee - admit that even teachers of Greek found the original volumes quite difficult to follow. The original explanations are too brief; reference material is scattered throughout the text; and the typography is poor (with some very small Greek fonts, and badly organized headings and subheadings).
If your school or university has prescribed "Reading Greek" - you wouldn't buy it otherwise - you are, unfortunately, part of a captive market and you really need to buy "An Independent Study Guide to Reading Greek" as well to make sense of the course.

4 out of 5 stars A self-study guide, designed to be used with the series........1997-11-14

Designed to be used in conjunction with the "Reading Greek" series. Gives answers to problems and translation notes. Excellent for self-study for someone who has had some training in a foreign language (esp. Latin), or has occasional access to a Greek teacher.

      Book Description

The civil rights movement’s most prominent leaders, Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929–1968) and Malcolm X (1925–1965), represent two wings of the revolt against racism: nonviolent resistance and revolution "by any means necessary." This volume presents the two leaders’ relationship to the civil rights movement beyond a simplified dualism. A rich selection of speeches, essays, and excerpts from Malcolm X’s autobiography and King’s sermons shows the breadth and range of each man’s philosophy, demonstrating their differences, similarities, and evolution over time. Organized into six topical groups, the documents allow students to compare the leaders’ views on subjects including integration, the American dream, means of struggle, and opposing racial philosophies. An interpretive introductory essay, chronology, selected bibliography, document headnotes, and questions for consideration provide further pedagogical support.

It is readable, succinct and thorough. I highly recommend this book, especially to anyone who will be teaching this period in history to middle or high school students.
