This is a great short read. One you can pick up and read a chapter at a time. Great for women with children. I would highly reccomend this book

5 out of 5 stars Protecting Yourself From the Irritations of Life.......2002-10-01

How do women become so wise and resilient? And why do we sweat the small stuff so much? Is there some balance, some moment when you realize that most of it is all small stuff?

Kristine Carlson is married to Richard Carlson and together they show great insight into the everyday life. Their books can seriously start to change your life if you use the principles they present in these easy-to-read compact books. I especially like their "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff in Love" book and I think it helped me improve my own relationship considerably by making me realize that one of the most important needs humans have is to be listened to. I had never really thought about what the other person needed in conversation, always so busy jabbering on. Wow, that was quite a revelation to me and it changed my entire view of conversation.

Expect real revelations from these books. They are more than enlightening. Sometimes a simple awareness of an issue can trigger an entire thinking pattern that will help you make changes. When reading this book a highlighter is essential!

Kristine discusses why you should set aside time every morning to reflect. See, that is a good excuse to spend a little time in the morning chatting online? Right? Ok, well I think that she actually meant spending time alone thinking about your day.

As you move into your day, you try to get organized and at times the entire day feels like it is falling apart. Have you noticed that if you pick up the house in the morning, the entire day is more enjoyable? Kristine gives herself an hour each morning to clear the path of her day. She spends time each morning organizing her life. I loved her thought about laundry. A gentleman she met makes folding clothes a Zen meditation. Ok, so I am not burning candles while I fold towels, but I try not to be as stressed about it all.

Some of her ideas include:

Make Peace with The Mundane - Sometimes life just IS.
Ground Your Energy in Nature - Take a walk in the evening.
Protect Your Inner Flame - Nurture yourself.

Plan an Inspiration Flow Day - Just go with the flow...oh, what fun this type of day is. It is very freeing and you do just what occurs to you. I write the most reviews on these types of days. They might include reading a great book, watching a movie, sitting outside with the cats, making dinner, writing in a journal, exercising. On other days, you might feel like just leaving the house for most of the day and forgetting about that load of laundry, those dishes, etc. Just escaping can be most freeing.

Walk Through Open Doors - A positive attitude shows you more open doors.

Let Go of "Perfect" Plans - have a sense of humor when things don't work instead of crying your eyes out. Dissapointment is so hard to take when you have very high expectations.

Climb Your Mountain One Step at a Time - set goals, but take it one step at a time.

Save Pot Stirring for Cooking Dinner (I really liked that one!)
Gather and Let Go
Define Your Small Stuff

This is a collection of essays that will inspire you and you will learn to appreciate people in your life, swallow your anger, take time for yourself and nurture your friendships.

Use this as a way to make your own list of things you want to change in your life.

Then:

Go run in a rain puddle
Light Candles while you watch a movie
Think about Beautiful Moments
Start a Journal
Say something inspirational to a friend
Tell someone in your life you love them
Let some things go, don't obsess so much (ok, but it is hard to do!)

Define what is not really important then imagine it drifting away on a small boat, down the river in front of you. After all, who has time for all that baggage.

Read this book to help you see the really important things in life.

Great Insight! You might even want to buy a few copies for
all your friends. That reminds me to add a few to my
wish list!

4 out of 5 stars Happier Women.......2002-03-06

This cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. It is just like the other series of "Don't Sweat" books but with a women-minded twist. It offers meditations designed to make us appreciate our lives, keep our emotions in perspective, and cherish other people. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. If we all followed the guidance in these books, we would be happier, more harmonious women.

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight Advice.......2001-08-31

Well-meaning, I suppose, but very lightweight advice. Take a hot bath. Breathe deeply. Drink decaffinated tea. Please. Nothing new here. A nice little book for someone who's pretty oblivious to the world around them. Sorry to be jaded; but nothing here that would seriously stop the sweating! Maybe it would stop mild perspiration, but not real sweat!

5 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!.......2001-06-25

Do you let all the small stuff in your life make you miserable? Are you ready to look at your "issues" about cleanliness, perfection & being stoic? When you get upset, does it last forever?

Thanks to our foremothers, we women have, for the most part, never had it so good! We have more independence, options & conveniences - so why are we sweating our way through our rich, full lives?

As Kristine Carlson writes in her Introduction: "...when Richard asked me to write solo for the first time...part of me wanted to hightail it as fast as I could in the other direction!...I knew, after some contemplation, that this would be a challenge and a part of my own spiritual journey that I simply could not refuse..."

It's all common sense & as we so well know, we women must have permission - Kristine Carlson gives us that in timely essays about everything imaginable from getting down & dirty to letting go of our perfect plans; from protecting our inner flame to saying no without feeling guilty. Wondering what to give this summer's Brides? This one is perfect! Enjoy the essays, connect the dots & Don't Sweat the Small Stuff!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-08-08

    The central idea of the book is Do It Now! In addition, there are lots of supporting ideas such as being organized, following up on tasks etc. Throughout the book, the author, Kerry Gleeson, introduces tools and techniques that help in doing-it-now. It has some good examples. Following the methodology advocated by Gleeson will yield immediate results. After reading the book, I got in the habit of cleaning my email inbox every day. At times I procrastinate, but my in box is much better than what it used to be.

    1 out of 5 stars Rubbish, save your money.......2007-04-18

    It is a testament to the author that he can sustain a complete lack of insight or idea for a whole book (albeit one with rather large font and few pages). This is the first self help management book I have read, and the last. Kerry Gleeson spends most of this book telling us how great his "Personal Efficiency Program" is, and how many people and organisations he has helped. It is a pity he doesn't put so much effort into actually telling us what PEP is. I suspect this is because he has made a lucrative career from convincing people he is telling them something useful, while actually telling them nothing at all. Indeed, when I read back through this book to try to identify concrete strategies to increase work productivity, the only concrete suggestion I could find is the astoundingly vapid mantra "Do it NOW!" - in italics.

    Well, I'm afraid "Do it NOW!" is not worth the cost (even if its currently being flogged at reduced price) that Amazon are charging, and my first step towards a more efficient life will be to stop buying this type of rubbish.

    5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-11-10

    A good book indeed.I personally could improve a lot on myself.A great guide for those who wants to improve self efficiency.

    2 out of 5 stars Out of date..........2006-08-05

    I was disappointed with this book. Based on the write-ups, I was expecting big things. I didn't find much that was new. I did find much that was old -- really old for a book that was updated in 2004, especially the technical aspects of PDAs, computer applications, phones etc. I know he has a separate book for the High Tech PEP but to me, that's no excuse for not updating this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Undoubtedly, the best in the genre...Must-Read for all busy professionals!.......2006-07-31

    Just a few years after I have started my strategy consulting business (as well as my own book-store) in the early 90's, I spotted a review of this book, 'The Personal Efficiency System (PEP)', in Success Magazine. I bought it immediately & have reread it many times. A few years later, came the second book, The 'High-Tech Personal Efficiency System' by the same author. I bought it immediately too & have read - & refered to - it several times.

    From the standpoint of self-management & work productivity, I consider them to be the best in the genre.

    In essence, the High Tech PEP book is a further extension of the earlier PEP book. Basically, it shows the reader how to exploit technology (email, groupware, internet, cell phones, etc.) as a personal information management tool & how to apply the low-tech principles of PEP in a high-tech environment.

    What I like about both books is the smorgasbord of concrete suggestions & useful checklists from the author. Also, I like the author's superb presentation of his brilliant work as embodied in the two books: each chapter comes with a preview & ends with follow-up action points. Bravo! as these aids make reading a breeze!

    In a nut shell, these are the relevant chapters, respectively:

    PEP:

    Introduction: Personal Efficiency Program - The Missing Link;
    Do It Now!
    Organize It Now!
    Do It Routinely;
    Plan It Now!;
    Follow-Up & Follow-Through;
    Do It Right, Now!;
    Do It Now! - From Whereever You Are!
    Be a Do It Now Manager;
    Organizing the Team to Act Now!;
    Maintain It Now;
    Epilogue: Just One New Habit;

    High-Tech PEP:

    Introduction;
    Principles at Work;
    Organizing Your Workspace;
    Organizing Your Computer;
    Organizing Yourself with a Computer: Time & Money;
    Road Warrior Wisdom;
    The Internet & World Wide Web;
    Groupware;

    Whether you are a desk-bound strategist or road warrior, these two books will undoubtedly equip you with all the proven strategies & practical tools to be a better manager of your projects...your people...your time... & most importantly, yourself!

    To end my review, let me recap this wonderful passage from the PEP book:

    "The best education doesn't teach you how to work. No matter how well you know your field, you won't be your most effective until you exercise good work habits - until you are able to get things done, on time, & with the most effective use of your resources."

    Richard Carlson has written numerous books encouraging folks not to "sweat the small stuff", and his title for teens is as warm, wise, and witty as his previous works. His tone is one of an older family friend who manages to advise while still maintaining the minimum level of coolness that teens require from those who intend to guide them into adulthood.

    With 100 different chapters, each just a few pages in length, this little book works especially well as a bedside companion or tucked in a backpack for the morning commute to school. Each chapter is devoted to a single, simple idea such as "trust your inner signals" and "root for the underdog," and plenty of real-life examples from teens are used to illustrate principles. In the second chapter, a teen volunteering at an animal shelter is used to show how just one person can make a difference, as she takes the time for one more phone call that results in saving a dog's life. The concepts are appropriate for both early high school students and new graduates--who doesn't need an occasional reminder to "be ok with your bad hair day"? Incorporating sports, theater, literature, video games, teachers, and parents into stories make these examples accessible to kids of all interests, and a sprinkling of tales from the author's own teenage years adds an effective personal note. With plenty of suggestions for adding activities into a teen's life--volunteer opportunities in particular--your child may even feel encouraged to seek out new forms of positive expression simply for the joy of the activity, rather than the old standbys of "my friends are doing it" or "I need it to get into college." --Jill Lightner

    1 out of 5 stars Not written for teens and it's very boring.......2007-09-03

    I am very dissapointed in this book. It is intended for a teen audience, but is written for an adult audience. I read it to several teens individually to get their opinion. One student commented, "It's obvious he doesn't have any teenagers." Try the library before buying this book I wish I had.

    1 out of 5 stars Ask a crisis counselor what they think of the 1st page of this book........2006-12-05

    This book is irresponsible, and I equate selling this book to teens with selling them drugs. Each could drive a troubled kid over the edge to suicide. The premise of the first chapter is that for a teen to tell their troubles to a friend or anyone else is the same as "barfing on your friends". As crisis center and peer counselors know, many teens hold their most disturbing thoughts and emotions to themselves, and in all too many that leads to suicide attempts or successful suicides. Any useful ideas the author may have expressed in the rest of the book is more than negated by this irresponsible, lunatic advice. Please Amazon.com, withdraw this item from sale to impressionable teenagers looking for advice in their troubled lives.

    5 out of 5 stars better than i thought.......2006-06-21

    When my grandma first gave me this book, I thought it was gonna be another useless book saying "just be yourself" and all that [...]. But this book actually has substance and I was surprised that I actually got something out of it. Recommended to any teen on the "emotional roller coaster" who needs some guidance in their life.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2006-02-22

    I always read books I get for my daughter first to confirm that I got her something right/good for her. This one is no doubt a winner. The titles of each chapter were catching enough to make you curious as to what you were about to read and then the story you read were a great explanation to the sometimes funny and odd titles. The story in each chapter was absolutely great. They were short enough to keep any kids attention, make a good lesson and walk away feeling good that you learned something new and were inspired. The really great thing is, my 13 year old who usually complains about sitting still and reading because she'd rather be actively playing sports, isn't complaining a bit about winding down and reading this book. She loves that most chapters are only 2-3 pages each, but even better, she is mimicking what they are teaching and I'm loving it, too, as a mom. This is a great read, a great inspiration and a lot of the stories are what these kids can relate to. I plan to buy it as a gift to others, but I'm not sure if I should get it for the parents or the kids.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read!.......2005-03-27

    This book definently helped me to chill out with certain struggles and people in my life. This book is a wonderful read for teenagers, because it suggests, not tells, how teenagers take things, and how they should act in certain situations. I would definently recommend this book to any teenager, or parents of their teenagers, who are struggling to find themselves, and also who are struggling in dealing with life.

        Book Description

        If you have ever said (or felt) any of the following, then Cool Time is the solution for you:
        * I spend more and more time just dealing with e-mail.
        * I often take work home or stay late because that's when I work without distraction.
        * A lot of time gets wasted in meetings.
        * There are too many interruptions.
        * I plan my day every day, but by 9:15 it's totally derailed.
        * I never feel caught up!

        Cool Time is a time management book with a difference. It's all about keeping mentally and physically cool so that you are always at your best and on top of your game. When you're mentally cool, you make the best decisions and get the best stuff done, and that's the root of successful time management.

        Cool Time doesn't focus on prioritizing and agenda setting. Book Description

        Through the lens of a remarkable urban high school, One Kid at a Time weaves compelling stories and a clear narrative into new possibilities for American education. All students at the Met School have a personalized curriculum and complete real-world internships based on their interests. Students stay with the same teacher for four years, and parents help to plan and assess their child's learning. There are no classes, tests, or grades, but high achievement is expected of all students -- regardless of their background. Every student in the Met's first two graduating classes has been accepted to college, even though most will be the first in their family ever to attend. Based on the Met's first four years, this book offers powerful ideas and sensible strategies for improving schools.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!.......2001-11-06

        Any one interested in creating an education system that is child centered, flexible and interesting should read this book.
        The Met, a public highschool in Providence, RI., is the focus of a 2 year study by the author that culminated in this book. This is a special place where real learning takes place and children are valued for their interests and their individualism.
        It almost makes me want to go back to highschool or atleast move to Providence so that my children can go there. Thank you to the author, eliot Levine, and to everyone associated at the Met for being brave enough to go against the tide and create a school that will hopefully be the model for all schools in the future.

          4 out of 5 stars Must have for new woodworkers.......2001-05-30

          I have been woodworking on and off as a hobby fo raobut 2 years and finally freed up space in my basement to set up shop. This book was a grat help - good ideas, clear pictures, easy to follow instructions. There was a good mix of easy to intermediate difficulty joints, and building shop furniture (where looks are not paramount) is a gret way to practice without wasting valuable wood. While is does not cover all of the possible items needed, it is a great start. Highly recommended if you are thinking of setting up a more permanent home for your tools.

          This study examines twelve biblical characters who were under pressure and will help you restore your soul in times of trauma, hurt, or depression.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Good; but not overly deep.......1999-12-19

          Good for group or individual study; but not too deep. Questions are rather obvious (basically they all boil down to--what does this verse say?). However, it will motivate you to look deep into the lives of Bible characters and learn life lessons from them.
