In CorelDraw 9 for Dummies, Deke McClelland shows you how the latest version of CorelDraw works while at the same time discussing drawing and graphic design as they apply to a computer-aided environment.
This book begins with a quick orientation to the CorelDraw user interface and--with the help of the clip art library--a tutorial on CorelDraw's tools for manipulating existing images. This tutorial covers zooming, layers, groups, and elementary file operations.
McClelland turns his attention to creating original artwork with CorelDraw, documenting the software's remaining tools in the process. He covers simple shapes and free-form lines, as well as colors, color gradients, clones, and all sorts of transformations. To demonstrate the tools, he employs an easily drawn, goofy-looking frog.
CorelDraw gets plenty of use as a text styler, so CorelDraw 9 for Dummies includes ample information on cool text tricks, including advanced typography, path fitting, and distortions.
Before wrapping up with coverage of raster editing using Corel PhotoPaint, the author elaborates on CorelDraw as a desktop publishing program. During the discussion, he creates master pages and enlists tiling as a means of printing large drawings on multiple pages. McClelland also reveals CorelDraw's ability to export drawings in Web-compatible formats. --David Wall

Good, simple book.......2000-12-01
This is a really good intro to CorelDRAW 9, as long as you're not after detail or advanced functionality. Want to know how to draw a circle, manipulate text and colours with no previous experience? This is the book for you. Want to know more about Pantone colours? Forget it.
I bought it to get a quick start in CorelDRAW before moving onto advanced stuff, and it's a great book for that. A couple of minor points - I hate the stupid jokes. And there are no colour pages (which would be great in a graphics book - even if it is "for Dummies"). On the whole, though, highly recommended.
good book.......2000-07-17
it's a good book specially for duumies
Book Description
Authors have experience teaching users how to use DRAW. In addition, Foster Coburn returns for his 3rd edition of the CorelDRAW book and both authors are Corel Certified Instructors. The perfect companion to the Corel PhotoPaint 9 title.

Bigger is Better.......2000-02-04
When I got this book, I was totally overwhelmed. It's only 1400 pages. I am new to Corel but this book brought me up to speed quickly. Just the CD ROM that is included with this book is worth the price alone. Alot of the book is still a mystery to me. The only problem with Corel is that when you start doing graphics you soon find out that there are no limitations to what you can do. Is this good or bad? If you can't make a choice of beautiful graphics, you are in for long nights fretting and many hours of wringing your hands. I rate this book from beginner to advanced. A must have.
Outstanding knowledge of Subject and Superb teaching skills!.......1999-07-27
Foster's CD9 book is an example of what can be accomplished by a "first rate" teacher who is second to none in thoroughly knowing his subject matter. Although CD9 is not a simple graphics program Foster and Pete have the graphics and teaching skills to make it a book I would recommend to anyone interested in the field of graphics ..beginner or otherwise. They took "No" shortcuts where quality is concerned. I read there cd8 book and yet still find there cd9 book worth every cent I paid for it. It covers not only how to use every tool but equally important what you "can do with the tool" artistically. In summary Pete and Foster want you to enjoy the program and they use every resource available in there book to accomplish this....And I believe they have succeeded!

Customer Reviews:
TERRIBLE.......2002-05-23
This book is terrible! The procedures are incorrect for CorelDraw 9.0. I never used CorelDraw so I was not familiar with the program. The author would give you step-by step instructions that do not exist in CorelDraw 9.0 software.
The Natural Pen is an example of a tool that I was trying to find but came to realize that it is not in the software. Also, the Dockers Menu is another example of a mistake. The author tells you were to find the Dockers Menu but my software does not show that menu. After playing around and asking for help in the program, I came to realize that I had to ADD the Dockers Menu. But she doesn't tell you that, you have to figure it out while scratching your head. I waste more time trying to figure out her instructions then to understand the program. I had such a hard time. I lost the book but will not buy it again. I will look for another book to buy.
Good.......2002-01-10
This book is good book especially if you are serious about Corel Draw. Yes it includes a couple of mistakes like refering to the Artistic Tool as Natural Pen but if you have any sense of reasoning or logic whatsoever it is a no brainer it took me 2 mins to figure it out.
I only wish I had read the reviews before I bought it.......2000-05-26
This book is terrible. It describes procedures that are incorrect for CorelDraw 9. I understand from other reviews (read only after I had struggled to find tools listed in the book but apparently nonexistant in the software)that instructions are based on older versions of CorelDraw. Having only used version 6 I was eager to learn about the new tools and their uses. The author describes reducing nodes by using a button called "auto-reduce" - doesn't exist in Corel 9. Use the "Natural Pen" - doesn't exist either, now called Artistic Mode. I am only 200 pages in but now realize it was a waste of money as the instructions are completely irrelevant for version 9. Please read reviews before dishing out big bucks on outdated computer books. Good ones exist, this just isn't one of them.
Do not buy this book.......2000-03-19
I made the mistake of buying this book. It is a fast and I imagine cheap update of the Corel Draw 8 Bible. The chapters have been minimally edited so that it refers to outmoded Corel 8 entities that are not in Corel 9, for example the Natural Pen vs the Artistic Media tool. I can't return the book because I made the mistake of opening the CD. I wish I could. The book is a waste. Buy something else.

Execellent Book.......2003-06-07
This book was one of the best written books that I have bought and believe me I have bought a bunch to learn various programs, such as Adobe Illistrator, Corel Photo Paint, Corel Draw etc. Phyllis not only explains things well, she also gives photos showing what she is talking about!" She doesn't write these books as if you should know everything, like most authors do, she writes it with the idea that you bought the book because you don't know what to do... and explains things so a normal person that doesn't have any expertiese in how to use the program, can actually learn something. She gives practice special projects to do so that you can practice what she has taught you. I am the kind of person that having the pictures with the knowledge to go with it makes the learning experience so much greater and interesting, where most authors tells you to click on the _____
button and if you are new to the program you want to see what they are talking about without having to search for what the author is talking about... The only thing negative that I have to say is I wish she hadn't stopped with Corel Draw for Windows book I hope she goes on and writes other books for Adobe programs and also extends the knowledge to more advanced levels in the books she writes.... I would love to see her write a book on every detail that is in the Corel Program so that you can not only learn the basics, but go beyond the basics in the same book!!
Love Ya Phyllis and will be looking for more of your books thats for sure...
This is the right one.......2001-06-19
I have looked at several other author's books, but this one is the first I would call an easy read. She does not assume that you know computer lingo, she explains and shows with screenshots every term.Well done!
Start with this book!!.......2001-04-27
Finally, a well designed, illustrated, straight-to-the-point book for using CorelDraw9. The author does a fine job of explaining step-by-step procedures for accomplishing everything from utilizing clipart, working with nodes and layers (yes, Ms Davis includes definitions), and extruding text to printing and designing a web page. Also included are plenty of tips, shortcuts, and projects to get you started/keep you interested. Not only a friendly text for beginners but also a "must have" as a reference. I was gritting my way thru the "...Dummies" book (which is just a little bit too dumb!) when I found this one. What a relief! If you want to get in and get to work, this is the book for you.
This book is awesome!.......1999-10-27
Miss Phyllis Davis does an excellent job of explaining CorelDraw. She really knows what she is talking about. You can use this book as a reference, or follow the steps in it to perform specific tasks. Do not be fooled because it is a smaller book with many pictures. This "little" book says more than any other CorelDraw book I have looked at. It is indespensable on my shelf.
Packed with useful info.......1999-10-26
There is a whole lot of useful CorelDRAW info packed into the compact, no-nonsense format of this book. Phyllis Davis doesn't just illustrate basic procedures in DRAW, she anticipates the kinds of problems professional illustrators will encounter - and solves them. Designers will be inspired by the creative example s used to illustrate each feature of DRAW.

Good book - better than taking a class.......2001-04-09
I really enjoyed this book. I already knew the concepts of desktop publishing, but was new to CorelDRAW and needed something that would get me up and running quickly. Each chapter of the book showed me what the program could do and then told me how to do it. I liked the web-links to see some finished projects in color.
Also, I had a question about how to pronounce something in the book and e-mailed the author. He e-mailed me back with the answer right away.
I am very impressed with this book and with the author. I highly recommend "Sam's Teach Yourself CorelDRAW 9 in 24 Hours" by David Karlins.
a good book but not good for a beginner.......1999-12-30
Normally, a marked as 24 hours course book should be easy to follow with and easy to learn from. However, Mr.Karlins tried to cover almost everything of Corel Draw 9 in this book, which causes a lot of confusion for the beginner reader.
Good Book.......1999-12-03
I haven`t read the book. But I think it has a good layout.(I have a friend who has bought the book for CDraw Ver 8,He says it`s very easy to follow.)I think this newer version has the same approuch if not better.

Even if you love art, love cool pictures, love computers, and love your graphics job, says designer and author Shane Hunt, you still want to get your work done quickly and painlessly. Hunt provides you with time-saving tools and tips on working smart in CorelDRAW 9 F/X and Design. This graphics- and content-rich book allows beginning or advanced users to take charge and master CorelDRAW 9, the powerful object-oriented graphics suite.
Almost every page includes a "tips" section--these range from bitmap explanations and exporting to duotone hints and tricks for color. Along with the manageable step-by-step projects in the book, Hunt includes a brilliant color studio and visual gallery filled with final images (these can also be found on the CD-ROM) that include corresponding sites in the book. For example, she directs readers to "find something you like, point finger, exclaim 'Cool!' then flip to the chapter that explains the process. Enjoy!" Some of the tutorials take you from past images--in one section, from the '30s and '40s--and show you how to add sci-fi pulp and comic-book style touches to your designs.
The accompanying CD-ROM is packed with tutorial files in native CorelDRAW formats, animation files, button and interface design samples, clip-art pics, plug-ins, graphics goodies, and f/x utilities. This is a great resource for graphics designers ready to plunge into the world of splashy creations and advance their careers with a deeper understanding of CorelDRAW 9. --Brooke Gilbert
Topics covered: CorelDRAW interface and toolset, new features of CorelDRAW 9 (bitmaps, effects filters, Artistic Media tool, outlines to objects conversion, Interactive Mesh Fill tool), and animation (using CorelDRAW and PHOTO-PAINT).
Book Description
The only book available that teaches the trend-setting, edgy illustrations that can be created with CorelDRAW -- chisel images on rock, design tattoos, master comic-book-style drawing. Other books are traditional, tools-based tutorials. CorelDRAW 9 f/x and design appeals to the thousands of users who want to take the application to the next level and break out of the box. Features a 64-page Color Studio chock full of cutting-edge industrial, psychedelic, bizarre, and provocative illustrations that are also available on the CD-ROM. Updates the successful CorelDRAW 8 f/x, which received rave reviews such as this one: "In this book Hunt shows you how to use Corel to do some awesome designs. Its reverse approach makes it unique. You can pick a design you like from the color section and then look up how it's done. I love that. Plus: Every piece of artwork is on the included CD. Why can't life always be that easy?"
Customer Reviews:
CD is incomplete.......2002-02-25
I absolutely LOVE this book. It's opened up a whole new world of possibilities with Corel Draw 9. By the time I've experimented with all of the tutorials, I'm sure I'll be quite the whizz kid. Unfortunately, I'll have to do it all without any help from the CD. There is no INSTALL.EXE on the CD. Therefore, I am unable to install it. Although I can access its contents through my CD-ROM, using it that way tends to freeze up my system and it's just not worth the aggravation. But the book itself is a real jewel and I truly enjoy reading and learning from it. Shane Hunt's writing style immediately puts the reader at ease. This alone is worth its weight in gold and is a rare and welcome commodity in "How-To" books. Thanks Shane!
Excellent Guide to Professional Techniques.......2001-11-24
This is the best how to book I have ever worked through. It is a must have for Corel Draw 9 and 10 users who have never learned all the hidden secrets and shortcuts to this program. After learning each and every technique in this book, my talents in graphic design have multiplied greatly! I find my self creating amazing graphics I never would have believed possible. Thanks Shane Hunt for writing this incredible book!
Outstanding Resource.......2000-08-02
After trying several of the web based tutorials I decided to try Shane's book. One of the best things about this book is that it takes an artistic approach in the instruction. I have used what I have learned from this book in all my projects to date. Shane has made me a more creative Corel Draw user. After several years of just using Corel Draw I am now creating on a level I never could have attained before. One should know the basics of Corel Draw before using this book. If you know how to access the menu commands then you should get this book. Highly recommended.
This book rocks!.......2000-08-01
This book works through some great effects in cookbook style, such that if you follow the recipe, you can great some fantastic results. Although I am using CorelDraw 8 LE on the Mac, and am a beginner when it comes to graphic arts, I was still able to amaze friends and family with the output!
The written style is clear, concise and easily understood, and the side bars are very informative. The color pictures in the center of the book are helpful in defining the target look, and the enclosed CD with electronic "recipes" and results is great.
This is now in my top 10 technical book list!
CorelDraw 9: FX and Design entertains and informs.......2000-03-22
The CorelDraw 9: FX and Design is one of the best books on the market to get the most out of your software package. Author Shane Hunt knows his stuff. He presents facts, tips and creative ideas in a fun and entertaining way. This book is exactly what I needed to teach me the 'how' of CorelDraw 9 and at the same time teach incredible creative tools I can use right away. The Official Guides are fine but this book gives you the tools to think not only 'outside the box' but outside the stratosphere.
Book Description
Written by acclaimed CorelDRAW expert Rick Altman, this new edition of the most comprehensive guide to CorelDRAW covers every feature, function, and new capability of the program. Using an approach that both instills confidence in beginners and augments the knowledge of the most experienced users, this book will help readers design professional-looking images, illustrations, and technical drawings. While it starts with the basics this guide delves deeply into advanced techniques, with extensive coverage on all the new and Web-related features. The full-color insert demonstrates finished illustrations described in the book, and "Gallery" sections showcase examples of CorelDRAW-generated projects.
Customer Reviews:
witty, but not as focused as it could be.......1999-11-16
This book is indeed witty, you will not get bored when reading it. Unfortunately, the jokes use half of the book, leaving not too much space for the CorelDraw itself. They explain what the function of each button is, and show how to draw rectangles and fill them with fancy colors. However, seldom do the authors go beyond these trivial things. It was my first book on CorelDraw, and I feel that this book was not enough to learn to use Draw. Another frustrating thing is that the tutorial files, which were supposed to pe posted on the web, are not there yet, although the book came in July 99, and I am writing this review in November. So be prepared to skip some chapters since you do not have the files to work with.
I Love Mastering CorelDRAW 9!.......1999-08-19
Rarely does a such a technical book read like a light-hearted comedy. I couldn't put it down. I applaud Rick and his staff for a job very well done.
this is a great book!.......1999-08-12
This is a really good book! OK, get serious: "This is a GREAT book!". I have been working in the computer publishing world since 1988 (Macintosh Plus, PageMaker 1.0...), and I produced a lot of books for my italian publisher (don't know exactly how many, between two and three hundreds, surely), but I must say that the "Mastering CorelDRAWs" by Rick Altman are the best for me. Altman writes well, is technically perfect, he is not boring, but he is not stupid (I mean, telling jokes and all that crap). He knows what he writes and, when needed, he asks for advice to the pros, without trouble. Thank to Sybex, the books were always supported by a CD-ROM with all the files you need (and they are all at their place...). From this edition you can get them on the Web, and that's great. This book let you learn to use the program even if you are a beginner, but it's good also for the advanced user. Well, I'm telling the truth, because I did it that way. A final note: thank to Rick Altman for the good job, and to Sybex for putting these books on the shelf year after year.
