4 out of 5 stars Encouraging and Uplifting.......2007-03-29

In the format of the bestselling series, breast cancer survivor Mary Olsen Kelly has gathered snippets of courage, healing and hope into categories like "Love," "Challenges," "Character," "Survival" and "Gratitude." Each story is written in a different voice and, though some are far better than others, all provide an important perspective and insight into this devastating illness.

A powerful source of encouragement for survivors, family, friends and all who love them.

5 out of 5 stars Support Group Between Two Covers.......2007-01-15

As the co-author of this book, I have to thank the amazing story contributors who wrote deep and moving stories about their journey through breast cancer in order to help those who have been newly diagnosed, their families and friends. This book would not have been possible without their courage, strength, and humor. Yes, there are a lot of funny stories in here too. It was an honor to work with such talented and generous women survivors (and one man) who are all surviving and thriving. This book is inspiring, it gives you a lift and lets you know that as you go through the often scary treatments for breast cancer, you are not alone.

Wonderful! Inspirational! I love all the Chicken Soup Books!

5 out of 5 stars A Gift For A Friend.......2007-01-04

I bought this book as a gift for a friend who is a breast cancer survivor. However, I did read the book before I gave it to her. It was very inspirational, supportive and encouraging. I was greatly uplifted by this book, as I am by all of the Chicken Soup books. They are wonderful books and very needed in a world that tends to focus on the negative. These books are a great reprieve from some of the ugliness that we have to deal with in our every day lives. Thank you Jack Canfield.

4 out of 5 stars comforting.......2007-01-03

I bought this book several months after I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a comfort for me to read about other experiences that were positive. It is a club that nobody wants to belong to but...it is a club filled with wonderful people.

The authors of Growing Up Catholic have fully 17 names among them. Here goes: Mary Jane Frances Cavolina Meara, Jeffrey Allen Joseph Stone, Maureen Anne Teresa Kelly, and Richard Glen Michael Davis. If this merits a smirk, you'll love Growing Up Catholic. First published in 1985, this classic collection of essays, games, lists, quizzes, drawings, and photos inspired two sequels (More Growing Up Catholic and Still Catholic After All These Years) and has now been updated for the millennium. ("After all, let's not forget where this whole millennium thing came from," the Introduction explains.) The many new features of this edition include "Que Sera, Sera: Who Will Be the Next Pope?" and "Ansubstantiation-tray: Can't Anybody Here Speak Latin?" Growing Up Catholic is bubbly but never blasphemous--just irreverent enough to be interesting, but not so irreverent as to be an inappropriate confirmation gift. --Paul Power

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars once a catholic...................2007-08-16

This is a funny accurate account of the all the trials and tribulations of being in a Catholic school, especially in the 60's and 70's.

3 out of 5 stars Who is the joke on?.......2006-09-18

I read through this book twice, and it is very, very funny. Many memories were brought back and it reminded me that even our religous practices can be made of fun of in the name of innocent humor.

But then I realized that something was missing. This book didn't just poke fun at the Catholic faith. It dismissed it. I was expecting the authors to end the book with a disclaimer -"even though we found great humor in certain aspects of our faith - It is a faith built on Jesus Christ. And we believe the Holy Spirit continues to lead the Church as was promised 2000 years ago". No disclaimer. No confirmation of their faith in Christ's Church despite the "humorous" aspects.

Imagine reading an explanation of American life from a former American now living in Europe as a socialist or a former American now serving Al-Qaeda. You can't help but feel they left the "American Way" because they just didn't "get it". That's how I felt after the second reading of this book.

Thus read this book for some funny laughs and good memories. Just don't forget billions of Catholics love and follow Jesus thanks to their upbringing.

4 out of 5 stars Growing up Catholic.......2005-02-22

Based on the book I find that my experience was not as unique as I had thought. The book captures the essence of growing up Catholic, the acceptance without thought of the teachings of the church, the Baltimore Catechism and the church cultures were beyond belief. My children who have not been the beneficiary of a Parochial education look at me with wonder as if to say "what were you thinking". It was a grand trip down memory lane and would recommend it to anyone who was a child of the 50s and 60s going through Parochial School.

5 out of 5 stars The Funniest Book I Have Ever Read.......2002-07-03

You really do have to be a Catholic to truly appreciate this wonderful book. As a Catholic schoolgirl entering her eleventh year in Catholic school (scary, isn't it?), I can fully relate to this. I honestly don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

You know what the funniest thing about this book is? Everything in it is true...from the different kinds of nuns to Father What-a-Waste (sigh); from the description of mortal and venial sins to the purchasing of pagan babies. Well, they don't sell pagan babies anymore, but they did in my mother's day.

Even a staunch Catholic like my grandmother would have to crack a smile at the descriptive, colorful language and the abfab portrayal of the sometimes ridiculous traditions of the world's most scandalous, under-fire church. This book is a must-read for all Roman Catholics, practicing or no.

5 out of 5 stars 11th Commandment - Read This Book!.......2002-01-04

I laughed all the way through this, which must be a sin! If you are a Catholic like me you will remember everything this book talks about. In fact, I had forgotten a lot of it. I'm a little surprised it did not go into Knights of Columbus Halls (a.k.a. - the Catholic bar) and Bingo (a.k.a. - Catholic gambling) a little more. But heck, they sure covered everything else. I have to go now, I have to finish crossing myself and say a few dozen hail Mary's.

    Book Description

    Few Americans know the history-changing story of the USS Mason, a World War II warship manned by an African-American crew that served as a role model for the integration of U.S. Navy ships. At a time when most blacks in the Navy were relegated to mess duties, the crew of the USS Mason escorted six convoys across the perilous North Atlantic, from the weeks leading up to the D-Day invasions until V-E day in 1945. As part of the so-called Hunter-Killer groups that defeated the German U-boats, they helped win the Battle of the Atlantic. Proudly We Served: The Men of the USS Mason tells the story of these brave men and their contributions to the Allied victory. Their success had a direct impact on President Harry S Truman's decision to integrate all of America's armed forces after the war. Recommended in 1944 for a commendation for their heroic actions during a violent storm, the Mason sailors finally received that commendation in 1995, after the publication of this book in hardcover and the release of a companion documentary. The men and ship have been further honored by the Navy's decision to name a new destroyer (DDG 87) after the Mason and propagate its proud heritage into the twenty-first century.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A nice history and of special interest to me.......1998-07-07

    My father (Wm.H. Farrell) was one of the officers on the Mason. He was the Engineering officer. When I was a kid, he "regaled" me with stories about the ship and crew. His favorites were the dog that got tossed into the drink off of Newfoundland, the big storm the ship experienced in I believe '44, and the time they were in port in the Azores and woke up to find a German submarine berthed near by to them. He thought very highly of the 1st Captain (Binford?). I think in general, he was pleased with the effort that Mary Kelly gave to this book. It wasn't until I was a teenager that I found out that the crew was black Americans. My father was always interested in the ship first (and especially the engine room!) and never distinquished crew members to me by their color.

    4 out of 5 stars A look at the Navy and racism of yesteryear........1998-03-03

    Although this book covers a very interesting time period and the story of the men USS Mason, it lacks readability. The tool of letting each person tell his story at each phase of the action leaves the book disjointed and hard to read. Historically it is wonderful and that Ms. Kelly told this story is admirable but this is not the way to do future books. The history and subject of this book make it a must read despite the disjointed story telling.

    5 out of 5 stars Kelly finds forgotten heroes then lets them tell their story.......1996-07-16

    Mary Pat Kelly's Proudly We Served strikes an important balance. She successfully weaves the narrative with the men's own words, which are poignant and powerful. The battles they faced on shore with racism and with the US Navy were as tough as facing German U-Boats in the Atlantic. This book is vital because it points to a significant historical event that even naval historians aren't familiar with: the only African American crew on a US warship in WWII

    5 out of 5 stars Beautifully captures the City of Light.......2007-06-17

    Fabrice Moireau's watercolors and sketches bring the City of Light to life, and vividly captures the atmospheric city with its teeming cafe life, historic buildings, and new constructions. The book is divided into several segments covering the historic center, Northern Paris, Eastern Paris, Southern Paris, Western Paris, and the Gazetteer provides additional information of some of the prominent buildings featured. Moireau's paintings and sketches are accompanied by Mary Kelly's impressions of Paris, and both perspectives provide a wonderfully warm portrait of the City of Light.

      Gracious needn't mean traditional, formal, or reserved. A gracious interior is one that welcomes family and friends and expresses the inhabitants' personalities, through comfortable and stylish furnishings, appealing colors, and carefully chosen decorative touches. Many people long for a home that exudes these qualities, yet they are unable to achieve it, whether due to budget restrictions, lack of knowledge, apprehension about how to begin, or all of the above. Design expert Mary Kelly Selover's skillfully presented sourcebook offers many solutions, through big, beautiful photographs covering a wide range of styles (including neoclassical, Victorian, country, English cottage, Southwest, postmodern, and eclectic), and extensive captions brimming with ideas. Since most of us tackle one room at a time, the volume takes the same approach, leading us from entryway to porch and stopping along the way at every room in the house. Selover analyzes what makes each space work: the color scheme, furniture mixture and arrangements, use of accessories and collectibles, and successful blending of diverse styles. For further help, the pages are peppered with highly useful sidebars that make sense of selecting wall coverings, upholstered furniture, floorings, paints, tiles, and ceiling fans, and a resource list offers suppliers for these items as well as appliances, fixtures, and more. --Amy Handy

        Staggered by third-world debt, Citicorp turned to a new management tool to help thwart growing international competition. According to authors Susanne Kelly and Mary Ann Allison, the company adopted "complexity science," which helped Citicorp learn how to evolve more effectively in its business environment. In the mid 1990s, they became a great turnaround story: profits rose again, debt was reduced, and its stock price rocketed. In The Complexity Advantage, Kelly, a Citibank vice president, and Allison, president of a consulting company, describe a complexity-based program that empowers employees and gives them the freedom to organize and manage themselves better. The authors write that this new management technique can help any company thrive in an increasingly chaotic business environment. The authors argue that managers who give company divisions the means to self-organize "will have enthusiastic employee contribution, better information, dramatic increases in both productivity and creativity, lower costs, and the ability to respond rapidly to change in direction." Kelly and Allison go on to describe step by step how the science of complexity can be applied to business. They give four simple rules to follow for successful self-organizing: Trust, learn together, commit deeply, and embrace change. The Complexity Advantage is a useful manual for company leaders interested in complexity science and its applications to business. -Dan Ring

        Book Description

        In today's rapidly changing global market, a growing number of organizations are turning to the science of complexity theory and successfully applying its principles to dramatically improve the way they do business. Susanne Kelly and Mary Ann Allison draw on their extensive research at Citibank, a recognized pioneer in the successful application of complexity science to the business world, showing managers how to use complexity's self-organizing techniques to increase efficiency and creativity, inspire new ways of leading, and predict the behaviors of employees, customers, vendors, and competitors.

        4 out of 5 stars Good information, how to implement?.......2002-04-24

        Don't get me wrong, I like the book. It is just that it is difficult to translate it into an initiative. Even if I ask members of the team who need to understand the concept and come up with ways to advance the concept, we will be spending time on "I don't understand this line here". My point is that the writing seems to be targeted to the decision-makers who are well-educated or well-read but it would be simply too difficult for the actual implementers - middle managers, task leaders, team members, etc. This is even more apparent at the global scene where English is the second or third language. This is probably why I can buy the brand new hardcopy on sale at a cheap price and the stack remains tall for many days (no one else is buying it).

        5 out of 5 stars "The best business plan is only a best guess".......2001-04-25

        "Your business comprises self-organizing systems whether you know it or like it. You can cut costs and improve profits dramatically by learning to work with these systems rather than against them. So, what is self-organization and how does it work?...In this book," Susanne Kelly and Mary Ann Allison write, "we build on complexity science to explain and apply the principles of self-organization to business and organizational behavior. We discuss the enterprise environment and energy that leaders must provide to generate the power and precision of laser-sharp business performance"(p.4).

        In this context, in Chapter 1, after defining complexity science and complexity advantage, they argue that "Complexity advantage companies address today's transition in business-plagued by rapid change and increasing uncertainty. For approximately a century our manufacturing model was comparatively stable...The Information Age has turned previous 'knowns' upside-down...The best business plan is only a best guess." And hence they summarize the old and new business paradigms as following:

        I. Manufacturing Age Business

        * Game: Bulk-material manufacturing.

        * Goal: Commodity product.

        * Domain: Regional.

        * Future: Predictability, deterministic.

        * Change Periodic nuance, steady rate, digestable.

        * Rules: Linear cause and effect.

        * Game plan:Five-year strategic plans.

        * Leader: Manages strategic plan to end state.

        * Ownership: Centralized decision-making and responsibility.

        * Challenge: Demand versus capacity to deliver.

        * Resources: Material and financial capital.

        * Risk: Moving too quickly-out of control.

        * Approach: Quality, low cost of production. Branding, emergent price standards. Diminishing returns.

        * Role of Team: Optimizing of quality and productivity. Application of raw energy. Repetitive day-to-day operations. Processing of resources.

        * Process Perspective: Parts interact in sequence of steps. End-to-end effiency key, standardization the answer.

        II. Information Age Business

        * Game: Design and use of technology.

        * Goal: Knowledge-based products.

        * Domain: Global.

        * Future: Uncertainty, probability, possibility.

        * Change: Way of life - accelerating, overwhelming.

        * Rules: Nonlinear complex interaction.

        * Game Plan: Three-year probability scenarios.

        * Leader: Envisions and coaches on direction.

        * Ownership: Distributed decision-making and responsibility.

        * Challenge: Demand versus capacity for change.

        * Resources: Human, social, or intellectual capital.

        * Risk: Moving too slowly-out of the running.

        * Approach: Be first-best if possible, high-cost R&D. Market lock-on, high margins. Increasing returns.

        * Role of Team: Quality:productivity:adaptability. Application of ideas. Quest for innovation. Processing of information.

        * Process Perspective: Whole emerges from interacting parts. Micro-to macrointegrity key, feedback the answer.

        Finally, they write that "By the way, if you are part of a start-up or a small-to-medium-sized business, don't be fooled by the adjective global. Today, satellite communications, the Internet, and air transport move information, materials, products, and people rapidly from place to place. All of us are now connected through a global market comprising mail-order customers and suppliers, supply chain partnership, and international franchise competition. Even our local pizza parior has installed a fax machine and is designing a Web site. They must compete not only with the deli down the street, but also with global fast-food chains such as McDonald's, Burger King, and Pizza Hut. Without the complexity advantage, they risk the fate of dinosaurs."

        Highly recommended.

        1 out of 5 stars Undistinguished.......2000-05-25

        The authors and the text come highly recommended but I must say that the book is a profound disappointment. What I expected was a book blending complexity science with applied business experience. What I received was another undistinguished business book. For a study based on nonlinear principles, Susanne Kelly and Mary Ann Allison rely excessively on linear lists and programs. Much like any other business text, there are the five levels in the fitness model, the fourteen steps to success, the four simple rules, and so on. In short, the authors appear to be thoroughly grounded in linear thought. There was very little on growing complexity thoughts, behavior, and actions in your own portion of the business organization. Instead, the authors have written a book that should appeal to corporate training departments everywhere because of the focus on simple steps, simple progressions, and simple solutions. My advice is to save your money because The Complexity Advantage is too easily forgotten.

        3 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......1999-10-04

        This book reveals how complexity theory (CT) can be used in today's complicated organization. However, it lacks the tools on how to achieve what it intends to do. The steps and levels of organization 'maturity' described by author is clear. It has interesting sections and good lessons to teach. The book does not stand on its own. It needs help from other disciplines to put the plan into reality. Perhaps, readers may find more in Theory of Constraints than what is expected in Complexity theory in business world at this point in time.

        1 out of 5 stars puffed up self-important view of the world.......1999-05-03

        Despite all of the hype, I found this book to be wordy, convoluted, and devoid of clarity. Sure, some of the concepts are useful, but they are presented in such a self-important and unconvincing style that they are useless. Any normal person would get lost in all of the acronyms and made-up new language. Phrases like "autocatalytic loops generating stable, healthy memes for robust self-organization" abound on every page. This book is for Ivory Tower theorists, not for somebody trying to run a business and manage a business. These may indeed be "big ideas", as a recent WSJ review states, but those ideas need a new voice....
