Best of BUTT: Bringing back the "sex" in homosexuality

Since its first legendary issue in 2001, international quarterly magazine BUTT has been bringing together groups of young alternative gay guys all around the world, connecting fashion, sex, and art with a good sense of irony.

Put together by the magazine's founding editors Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers in collaboration with photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, this book is a 'best of' compilation of the first 17 issues of BUTT, full of interviews with famous personalities and photographs by the likes of Terry Richardson, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Wolfgang Tillmans as well as unknown talent. Collectors of the magazine who have been desperately searching for rare back issues will be able to round out their collections with this compendium, which will also be a delight for those who haven't yet discovered the joy of BUTT.

With sexy pictures of, and candid interviews with: Asianpunkboy, Bruce Benderson, Peter Berlin, AA Bronson, Christopher Ciccone, Al Eingang, Simon Foxton, Marc Jacobs, Heinz Peter Knes, Marcelo Krasilcic, Inez van Lamsweerde, Bruce LaBruce, Lutz, Matmos, Ryan McGinley, Alasdair McLellan, Stephin Merritt, Walter Pfeiffer, Terry Richardson, Jeremy Scott, Hedi Slimane, Casey Spooner, Michael Stipe, Wolfgang Tillmans, Viktor & Rolf, Domenic Vine, Matthias Vriens, Rufus Wainwright, John Waters, Bernhard Willhelm, Jonny Wooster, Gus van Sant, Edmund White.

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Small-Minded.......2007-07-13

This book is a collection of frank interviews and pictoral articles that will keep you turning pages until you've finished each and every one of the too-few-at-550+ pages. The more you read, the more you want. Each story is a voyeuristic acid trip into some aspect of the gay world that you probably hadn't even imagined existed.
Have you ever seen someone interesting walking down the street, and wondered what their story was? Well, what if someone went and asked them simple but insightful questions and then actually got answers? You would have this book. Some of the people being interviewed are somebodies...some are anybodies, and some are nobodies...but they are all equally interesting when asked the right questions.
Trust me, if you have a curious mind, you will love this book. If you already have all the answers, you probably just want to keep right on walkin'.

5 out of 5 stars Love it but just buy it somewhere else..........2007-05-17

I first ordered this book from amazon but they kept on delaying the shipment until I saw the book at a local Tower Records store so, I cancelled the order and bought it brand new. It cost a little more but sometimes you just have to have what you want asap.

Now, about the book. Unlike some review I read here stating that this book portraits young, famous and rich men. Not at all, the interviews are great, intelligent and witty and the characters portrayed range from music stars to ordinary guys (not ordinary like in "common", but simply "not famous"). The format is pretty simple, a Q&A session but it's perfect for revealing every character's personality, interests and humor.

Most of the pictures are cool, others are weird.

I recommend this book if you want to have a broad picture of the gay subculture out there or if you want to get to know better what's going on in the gay cultural world.

1 out of 5 stars It's just porn ..........2007-02-22

I flipped through this trash at American Apparel. It's just a new, sort of elitist way of repackaging porn. It's just as destructive as regular porn. More execs trying to sell us on what is attractive and what is not; i.e., young, muscled, endowed, rich = attractive and worthy of the gay "community's" attention, anything else = not.

You all can give this review "unhelpful" votes, all you want. Truth be told, gays wouldn't care about this magazine if it did not feature handsome, young white men. Look at all the attention given to CNN's Thomas Roberts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-01-30

This book is wonderful for entertainment while on the toilet! You can even use the pages if you run out of toilet paper! The pictures are quite lovely and the European aesthetic is so much better than anything manufactured in the US. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars BUTT-tastic!.......2007-01-10

I love the magazine and I'm absolutely in love with this book! I accidentally ran across Butt a couple of years ago while doing some research on one of my favorite creatures alive: Wolfgang Tillmans (who has quite a contribution to the magazine as well as this book, specifically). The magazine is funny, candid, refreshing, gorgeously-sleazy in a honest/tounge-(and whatever else)-in-cheek sort of way, and highly intelligent to boot. This book is all of that bounded into one Butt. It is one giant amazing Buttfest.

    Book Description

In the previous century, photography helped shape art; in the current one, it has begun to dominate it. Not only are major international museums and galleries mounting blockbuster exhibitions, but art photographers are also being celebrated as contemporary masters and their work commands unprecedented prices. This indispensable survey presents the work of 76 of the most important and best-known art photographers in the world: Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Cindy Sherman, Jeff Wall, Sophie Calle, Wolfgang Tillmans, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Allan Sekula, Boris Mikhailov, Inez van Lamsweerde, Stephen Meisel, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Sam Taylor-Wood, and many more are featured in its pages. Susan Bright, former Curator of Photographs at London's National Portrait Gallery, has organized the book into seven sections--City, Portrait, Document, Object, Landscape, Fashion, and Narrative--and provides an introductory essay for each. Along with each photographer's works, presented in sequence within those divisions, Bright's commentaries provide context and depth, and quotations from the artists themselves offer valuable insights into the motivation, inspiration, and intentions behind the work. Following in the tradition of Photography Past/Forward: Aperture at 50 and the Photography Speaks series, this volume will become an essential resource for curators, collectors, scholars, practitioners, and anyone who wants comprehensive, up-to-date exposure to the state of the medium today.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars good text some good artists but..........2007-05-21

Very good Rhigting but only a few serious art photographers in this book all the others don't know anything about photography or art and the "visual" failure to pass the message of the concept they are dealing with at all!
There are a lot of much more better artists that deal with the same matters to choose from.

Is sade to see how the curators and academics that deal with art photography, follow the art dealers and PR people and they are failing on their mission and leading this wonderfull art of photography to pathetic places

    1 out of 5 stars one-sided view.......2006-06-21

to call this 'art photography now' is a bold move, and this collection is less a survey than an advertisement for a particular style of photography. the work doesn't vary much from artist to artist, and if you don't like color fictive constructions and digital manipulation then you probably won't like this book. as the trend of this type of large scale, color, set-up, advertising-influenced work fades, this book will seem a sad reminder of a rather lame period in photo history when the majority of galleries, critics, artists, and dealers joined forces to produce (like this title) little more than a shopping mall of trendy, elitist, high-priced commodity under the guise of art.

5 out of 5 stars A trip to 80 (good) art galleries in a single book.......2006-05-08

It is difficult to find good contemporary photography overviews -- typically, you could go to galleries or museums for several years or buy a stack of art photography books and spend days going through them -- assuming you had a strong Art background. This book offers a nice alternative and it is one of the best overviews of contemporary fine art photography available.

Aperture, a respected photography publishing house, has beautifully produced this handsome book with 80 of what they consider to be the best living and working art photographers. The selection is broad, encompasses many areas and is well organized into 7 sections from Portrait to City. Several works from each artist are presented along with a short description of an artist's Work from a curator's perspective. Even more valuable are quotations from each artist describing their Work from their perspective. This alone makes the book worth owning.

Photographers you might know; Cindy Sherman, Thomas Ruff, Gregory Crewdson, Jeff Wall, Uta Barth, Joel Sternfeld, Thomas Demand and many others are alongside people you have probably never heard of but should get to know. The coverage of the cinematic, self exploration/psychological, conceptual and to some extent digital influences presented here should be thought provoking. Clearly, the "digitalness" of photography as a medium and all that implies -- interaction and collaboration, manipulation and realism, and authenticity and authority -- is growing in importance and will no doubt be better covered in the future as those artists emerge.

There are only two omissions that would have been interesting to see included; artists such as Gerhard Richter, best known for his painting and who uses photography extensively -- and some of the newest up and comers, like Idris Khan. To be fair, those areas are rich enough to support separate books and you should not let this keep you from buying this book. Overall, this is an excellent way to quickly learn about contemporary photography and you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best contemporary photography books.......2006-02-13

i think this book is one of the best art books available on the market. Every section is divided by the artist and it's explained in a very complete way and very simple to understand at the same time...a real dilight to your mind and a strong pleasure to the eye!!!

      Book Description

Few artists have changed the manner in which photographic images are made, read, and received over the past two decades as dramatically as German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968). One of the most important and distinctive artists to emerge in the 1990s, Tillmans’s work is internationally recognized for its powerful reflections on the often overlooked objects and moments in everyday life.
With images culled from the entirety of Tillmans’s career, this generously illustrated book accompanies the artist’s first retrospective exhibition in the United States and features the potent effects of his portraits, abstractions, and structural and sculptural motifs. Essays by leading scholars examine the context of the German art and pop cultural scene in which Tillmans first began working in the late 1980s; his use of magazines as both venue and source materials; his unique approach to portraiture; his ability to create a sense of intimacy between the viewer and subjects ranging from his friends to cultural figures and heads of state; and his distinctive approach to presenting his images in displays and installations.
A fascinating look at the breadth of Tillmans’s career to date, including his most recent new work, this book demonstrates the renowned abilities of one of the art world’s most revolutionary photographers.

        Book Description

Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) is one of the most significant European artists at work today. His informal and apparently spontaneous photographs of gay pride activists, ecowarriors, and clubbers brought him attention at an early age and eventually won him acclaim as a chronicler of his generation.

Tillmans's work spans the genres of landscape, cityscape, portraiture, and still life. He focuses on the overlooked details of life-a bunch of keys in a door, the chaotic sprawl in an open cabinet-and the grand sweep of natural phenomena, including solar eclipses and electrical storms. Packed with more than 2,000 color illustrations, this book features a fascinating interview with curator Mary Horlock in which Tillmans reveals the art historical connections and the common themes that unite his disparate work.

Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Tate Britain, If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters presents the most comprehensive survey of Tillmans's work to date. Conceived and designed by the artist, it demonstrates a continually developing vision, constantly embracing new ideas and offering fresh perspectives on the world around us.

          Book Description

Freedom From The Known is the first book to focus entirely on Wolfgang Tillmans's abstract photographs, exploring the presence abstraction has had within his figurative and representational work. It is published on the occasion of the artist's first major solo exhibition for an American museum--curated by Bob Nickas, who contributes an essay here--which opened at P.S.1 in Long Island City, New York, in the spring of 2006. Of the 25 pieces here, 24 were produced specifically for this project and had never been seen before the exhibition. Most of are "cameraless" pictures, made by the direct manipulation of light on paper, rather than on a negative. At the exhibition, each photograph was presented in a frame, which marked a departure for the artist, who pioneered installation with tape and pins. But he was right: Frames gave these elusive, transitory, abstract images coherence as objects in space, as well as both buoyancy and weight. They were accompanied by a group of figurative photographs from the 1990s series Empire, which made the shift from figure to abstraction by being passed through a photocopy or fax machine, then scanned to the highest possible resolution, turned into large-scale C-prints and framed. A selection of earlier photographs provides a context for Tillmans's passage from figurative and representational imagery to abstraction. Taken together, these more conceptual works reveal the self-reflective impulse underpinning choices of media and topic throughout his work.

            Book Description

For artist Wolfgang Tillmans, portraiture is a collaborative process between photographer and accomplice. While Tillmans' photographs are often referred to as casual, they are actually the result of a carefully constructed process of engagement with his models. Each sitter, be they a world-famous rock star or a family member, issues forth both vulnerability and dignity. Presented here are a selection of some of the best of these portraits, taken between 1988 to 2001, and chosen by Tillmans himself. Subjects include filmmaker John Waters, architect Rem Koolhaas, musicians Moby and Michael Stipe, actresses Irm Hermann and Chloe Sevigny, as well as the artist's family and friends.

            Book Description

Wolfgang Tillmans, the first German-born artist, and first photographer, ever to be awarded Britain's prestigious Turner Prize, has become, in recent years, "Mr. Zeitgeist," as the German magazine ARt has called him. His best-known photographs, such as portraits of friends and youth culture denizens, stillifes, images of garments, and the "Concorde" series, have been shown in exhibitions and magazines throughout the world. Presenting him, however, as far more than a documentarian of Gen-X and youth culture, this major monograph on his work will present primarily unpublished photographs: land and cityscapes that have been manipulated with light during the printing process, images created without negatives, only by the use of light on photographic paper, and other abstractions. The book also includes a variety of more familiar works in which Tillmans examines the abstract qualities of nature and common, man-made goods. Wolfgang Tillmans is a remarkable publication on one of the most important artists of his generation.

              Book Description

The underbelly of the world and the pursuit of impossible truth In his third TASCHEN book, celebrated artist photographer and winner of the 2000 Turner Prize Wolfgang Tillmans takes his exploration of the visible world to a new level. The title truth study center is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the paradox of our desire to find a universal truth and the impossibility of doing so. From evocative nude studies and candid personal portraits of Tony Blair to astronomical views of planet Venus passing over the disc of the sun, for the first time the full width of Tillmans's world is brought together in one book. Also included is an extensive selection of striking new abstract works, which through their vivid colors and compositions evoke bodily as well as atmospheric sensations. From nightlife to still life, Tillmans shows us another side of the world we live in today.

It is impossible to separate out the history of representations of the naked male from the history of gay male culture, sensibility, or erotica. From the statuary of classical Greece to Michelangelo's David to the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe, the nude male form has signified for gay men not only sexual desire but homosexuality itself.

David Leddick's The Male Nude is an almost 800-page survey of the nude male in photography of the past century that presents us with the changes in body type, beauty, and sexual affect that have occurred over the past 100 years, but with evolving notions of "art" and "culture" as well. From Victorian prints of strong men to the "health" photos of the 1940s and '50s to the works of contemporary artists such as Mapplethorpe, Bruce Weber, and Nan Goldin, David Leddick charts the evolutions that the male body--and gay culture--have taken for ten decades. --Michael Bronski

5 out of 5 stars Male pictures at a good price.......2005-08-16

I bought this book wondering about the quality and quantity of male picture included, but I am totally satisfied. The book displays a comprehensive sample of male pictures from late XIX century up to today. I think it will be useful for fine art students and other people who need a good visual source for the male nude.

5 out of 5 stars Another Fine Leddick Volume.......2004-03-24

Nobody does a better job of collecting and publishing nude photographs of men than David Leddick. He adds here another fine volume to his several books on the subject. Leddick begins with photographers in the Nineteenth Century and continues to the present in chronological order. All the photographers you expect are here as well as some of the photographs we have seen many times before. (I'm thinking now of Mapplethorpe's infamous "Man in Polyester Suit.") In addition to Mapplethorpe, there's Thomas Eakins, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Cecil Beaton, George Platt Lynes-- for my money nobody surpasses him-- Bob Mizer, Horst and Herb Ritts. But Leddick also includes David Hockney, Duane Michaels, the incomparable Imogene Cunningham and one of my favorite photographs by one of my favorite photographers, a shot of Helmut Berger by Helmut Newton. I was also glad to see Leddick include the work of Nan Goldin and Pierre et Gilles, two unique photographers whom I admire tremendously. There's a good chance you'll find your favorite photographer included here and become acquainted as well with artists you didn't previously know.

This little volume is beautifully printed and extremely well-priced.

2 out of 5 stars Did nothing for this straight woman.......2003-01-23

I must agree with the reviewer who stated that this book had a gay tilt to it. That's perfectly fine if that's your cup of tea, and I'm glad that gay men have books such as these to choose from. I prefer something with just photos of nude men by themselves. I guess I'll continue my search for such a book. I'm disappointed that there is so little out there for heterosexual women like me.

              2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-28

How could it not be, right? It's called 'Male Nude'. Well there are many nude men within its pages, but nothing I found spectacular or new in approach. It seemed this book was done with a gay tilt to it as well, which is fine if that's what one is looking for. Several of the images are of men together, hugging, admiring, etc. I hoped for more nudes on their own, instead of images provoking what happened before or what will happen after the photo was taken. Regardless, there are some nice physiques here, and the book is laid out in chronological order from the 1900s up to present day. The past pictures were intersting to see, but this isn't something I keep precious in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Good General History of an Artform.......2002-06-04

There isn't much else I can say that I didn't cover in the title of my review. This is a good collection of photographs divided into time periods, each of which is given a brief essay introduction by Leddick. Leddick, while not a brilliant art historian, is the best I've found on this controversial and often overlooked artform.
