I ordered this book to learn more about MS Office. I received this book within 5 days and it is very helpful and very easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies.......2005-07-01

The book (Microsoft Office 2000 for Windows for Dummies)is like new. I could hardly believe when I open the package and saw the book. The speed at when it reaches me was also excellent. I would encourage anyone to conduct business it them.

4 out of 5 stars Really for "Dummies".......2004-12-03

As others have said, this book is very very basic--perhaps because it attempts to cover all the components of the Office 2000 suite in less than 500 pages. If you have even basic familiarity with the program you're using, it won't be much help. For example, I turned to this book to see if I could discover some of the more sophisticated features of Outlook email, and was disappointed. It's pitched to the "how to send a message" crowd. But, I also am trying Excel for the first time, and it helped a lot just to be able to easily find how to enter a basic formula. Bottom line is, once you start using a program regularly you'll graduate from this manual pretty quickly.

2 out of 5 stars Turned out to be less than useful.......2003-11-27

I got this book when I entered the working world out of university- aside from providing a few very basic tips on how to format printing and what not, there is not much to this book that is practically useful.

I wanted something that would pick up where I left off in college and help me make usable spreadsheets with guides to the various equations and what not- alas, there is very little here.

This book is only for total beginners- you will soon outgrow this book and wish you had something that went a bit farther in depth and was of more use as a reference guide.

    Book Description

Ever considered changing the fonts in your presentation depending on the audience size? Or wondered what colors work best for selling? Packed with practical advice you can't find anywhere else, the Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 Bible brings you in "one big book" absolutely everything you need to plan, build, and run dynamite PowerPoint presentations that get your point across.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2004-07-11

I found this book to be very helpful in planning a presentation, including things like colors to use for different room situations and how to interface with AV equipment. Coverage of PowerPoint itself was very good also and thorough.

2 out of 5 stars Probably as good as it gets--more's the pity.......2002-10-08

This book did not serve my purposes particularly well, which probably says as much about my differences from the core audience of the book and of PowerPoint as it does about this book itself.

I am in a scientific/technical field. To me, content comes before style. Show me too many whistles and bells (Word Art, animation, sound clips, etc.) and the BS shields go up. In that sense, my perspective is 180º opposite that of sales professionals, whom I gather are both Microsoft's core market for PowerPoint and Ms. Wempen's core audience for this book.

These differences in perspective show up in this books relatively scant treatment of importing images and other objects. For someone who uses a lot of PNG, JPG, or other image files in their presentations, there are questions about how much resolution (how large a file size) is helpful and how much is overkill. You won't find treatment of that subject in this book. Likewise, you're largely on your own with the subtleties and complexities of making relatively obscure scientific graphing software work with PowerPoint through the "wonderful magic" of OLE (or whatever they're now calling it).

Often the index is a very important component of a reference book. You can get software to compile an index for you, but depending on that is like depending entirely on your word processor's spelling and grammar checking functions, rather than having a human copy editor. This book seems to me to have let the machine do it. For instance, I was trying to determine how to omit a slide from a presentation rather than deleting it. I first looked up "omit" in Microsoft's online help. No luck (Microsoft, of course, depends third party authors like Ms. Wempen to provide adequate documentation of Office suite software, at no cost to Microsoft.) No luck in "the Bible" either. After kludging around a while in the menus, I found "hide" in the "Slide Show" menu. I then turned to "the Bible". There is no entry for "hide". There are two entries for "hiding". One, in the 30 pages "quick-start" pre-book, tells how to hide the very annoying Office Assistant that I long ago exorcised. The other refers to "backup slides" on page 90, which is a discussion of various types of audiences.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to create a presentation.......2001-09-27

Create multimedia presentation for introducing your business, company or etc. using Microsoft Powerpoint. This book will help you create presentations using text, graphics, sound, videos, animation, charts and a lot more and publish them on the web or using them in the fairs and more. Step by step lessions will help you become a professional Powerpoint user. I highly recommend this book and all other books by Bible

4 out of 5 stars I am recommending this to all my colleagues!.......1999-11-01

I am the Technology Training Coordinator at Huntington College, Indiana. I have read through the text and I am using it in my latest PP2000 class for facutly and staff becuase I think the book is clear, easy to understanding, detailed and has been extra tips, notes, and cautions that help one make great presentations. I have no relationship to the author or the publisher.

I do wish the CD came with some PP examples to use along with the text.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......1999-10-19

This book is good because it doesn't just tell you how to use the features of PowerPoint (although it does do that really well), it also explains things like good presentation design, public speaking skills, etc. to make your overall picture to the audience a success. It's like getting a really good computer book and bonus books on public speaking and graphic design all in one.

    1 out of 5 stars Didn't help me.......2006-11-10

I bought the book specifically to learn how to show slides with a powerpoint program and projector. It barely touched upon it. I'm still left fiddling with a program that seems difficult to me, an experienced computer user.

5 out of 5 stars The Great Book I Bought.......2005-09-05

I bought a PowerPoint 2000 for Windows for Dummies book for .95 (cents). I was very surprised when I opened the package and found a brand new book inside. I expected a badly torn and used book. However, I got a brand new book in the mail. I'm still suprised over that since I always taught I would get scammed if I bought anything over the internet.

5 out of 5 stars Power Point 97 for Windows for Dummies.......2004-03-06

I purchased this book through Amazon.com from Matt nacc@yahoo.com. The service was great and the book arrived in near perfect condition. This book is a great help to me in making interesting presentations for my adult Sunday School class. I was raised with the yellow graphite, erasier attached to the top "word processor." This book is clearly written, easy to understand, and fun to read. I'm very satisfied with the book, the service, and the supplier. Thanks again!

5 out of 5 stars Saved the day!.......2001-11-04

Ok, here's the situation, I had a job interview that required I take a proficiency test using power point and I'd never used the program before. At first I feaked when they told me, but then I ran out and grabbed a copy of this book with the hopes that it would help me not make a complete fool out of myself. Following along with the book on my notebook, I had no trouble understanding things from basics to more advanced techniques (like posting presentations on the internet). The witty voice and cartoons that the 'Dummies' books are famous for kept me alert and interested in moving forward. I never felt like I was being talked down to and was suprised to find myself enjoying the process! One thing I really appreiated is they give you multiple ways of preforming the same task, so you can choose which is best for you (also on these job proficiency tests they sometimes like to have you do it their way, so you better know more than one way to do things).

One week later I took the test, scored a 90% and was offered the position. Thank you Doug Lowe!

3 out of 5 stars Experienced Users Need Another Book.......2001-02-07

This book was well written and provided a large amount of information - but did not cover any advanced techniques. If you have even a little experience with Power Point (or graphic design in general), pick another, more advanced book. You'll be much more rewarded.

OFFICE 2000 8 IN 1 STEP BY STEP

    Amazon.com

Whether you're upgrading to Office 2000 or using the application suite for the first time, odds are that you'll need some help getting up to speed. Microsoft Press covers all of the bases with Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step.

In trying to keep the needs of every user in mind, this book might intimidate the novice and yet go too slowly for the power user. In comprehensively touring the eight main programs in the Office package, it may be best suited to intermediate users.

Anywhere from two to five lessons on each application explain usage, including tutorials that show you how to design business cards or schedule meetings. As part of a training program, this would make for a pretty good reference book since each lesson ends with a table of quick explanations for performing the tasks you've just learned.

Microsoft Office 2000 8-in-1 Step by Step comes with a CD-ROM containing examples and multimedia walkthroughs for many of the lessons valuable to "hands-on" learners. Between the lessons, the diagrams, and the information in the book, you should be able to master Office with some patience and diligence. Of course, this is a Microsoft book, so if you're looking for bug reports or unofficial tips and tricks, you'll have to try elsewhere. But if a no-questions-asked tutorial and reference is good enough for you, there's nothing better. --Rob Lightner

    5 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office 2000 8 in 1 Step by Step.......2007-01-04

The book is great and was shipped on time.

    2 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2005-09-06

This one should be left on the writing room floor. Has some information in it but not nearly enough for the price.

4 out of 5 stars Step By Step.......2001-12-11

I ordered the book and it came propmptly. More promptly than getting Office 2000 loaded on my machine. It looks a bit more simplistic than what I was looking for but it looks like a great book for someone just getting started.

4 out of 5 stars Great initial investment pursuant to MOUS certification.......2000-12-12

My goal for 2001 is to obtain the MOUS certificate at the Master level. I have used MS products with the concentration of my experience centering on Word and Excel. I have used Access sporadically and with intermediate level performance. My experience with PowerPoint leaves much to be desired since I mainly use the wizards. My funds are limited so I wanted an all-inclusive reference (with CD Rom for practice) which would provide a basis for my study. I bought the book from another source (please forgive me oh mighty Amazon) and in terms of area concentration I would say it is intense concentration on beginning information, greater than average concentration on intermediate knowledge and average concentration on advanced applications. This is not a problem - I plan to buy books which center completely on each package as I master the foundation of each package. I would disagree with anyone who states that this is not for the advanced user, with constant upgrades and education there is no way anyone can ever retain each ounce of minutiae that can be acquired; this book is an excellent refresher. For the beginning or intermediate it is an excellent basis for further study.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Microsoft Office 2000.......2000-04-04

This book does a great job of explaining the basic concepts of all of the Microsoft Office programs. It also has good practice excerises. It does not, however, touch on any of the advanced or complicated features.

    1 out of 5 stars Worthless........for some.......2003-01-10

Stupid book, stupid class, waste of time. Unless you are totally, 100% computer illiterate. I have a friend from Arkansas named Shawn, who didn't even know how to turn the computer on (literally), who used this book and is now typing his own personal letterheads and using all the Microsoft programs taught in this book to their full extent. He woulda given it 5 stars if maybe I found some use for it other than starting fires, making patties, disposable coasters, etc.

I propped up a table in the cafe at my college with it...that was about the most use I ever got out of it...

    3 out of 5 stars Exploring Microsoft Office 2000 Professional, v. 1.......2000-05-16

Well laid out, high physical quality, effectively written text good for teaching pure beginners how to use this tool [and even v.1 has some tips for those who are experienced] with lots of useful exercises. What limits this to 3 stars is the fact that OUTLOOK 2000 is not covered in any way whatsoever, despite the fact that it is an essential part of OFFICE which is heavily used in many organizations. The index also proved lacking when I wanted to find out about 'speaker's notes' in POWER POINT.

    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2000-04-05

Very comprehensive coverage of Office 2000 application. I get stuck on something, there is an answer! It saves so much of my time! Try it!

3 out of 5 stars Does not tell about the fun things........2002-04-24

This is a good book for presentations. However, I want to know how to transfer slide shows and such to video, CD's. This book does not even mention that it can be done. I know it can, I've seen it done. I'll keep looking until I find a book that tells how. Not everybody uses PowerPoint just for business.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! A PowerPoint book that teaches design & technique........2002-03-15

I present and coach presentation design and development as well as delivery dynamics. This is THE book I tell my attendees to get open on there desktops. Here's why: What most authors of PowerPoint books forget is that PowerPoint is a tool for building a presentation that will be DELIVERED. Finkelstein takes the time to make that clear and presents her ideas and steps as though there will be an audience in your future. Thought is give to the prespective of the audience.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be set after this book.......2000-01-04

Here's what I like about this book. The color photos really made the examples come alive. There are all this tips in boxes throughout the book. I learned excellent ideas I would never learn on my own. It is so easily organized that I could find what I needed very quickly. I understood her writing. She writes so I understood her explanations. Mostly I like that when I'm trying to figure out how to do something and feel frustrated I can find the answer in her book.

4 out of 5 stars PowerPoint 2000 "Professional Results" Delivers.......2000-01-04

As a professional consultant in the area of presentation design and development, I've learned over the years how easy it is for even very large clients to create very bad presentations. Professional presentation design is an illusive goal for most companies. Finkelstein's book delivers a good balance of thorough, well-illustrated description, pages full of 4-color examples and contributions from professionals in the field, which add a real world perspective to the textbook instructions. It's my experience that most presentation designers only get a handle on a small fraction of PowerPoint's capability. Books like this one will propel you well beyond the basics. I would recommend it highly. (For those not finding a specific download, it's a bit like focusing on the handprints on the glass front door of the Smithsonian - you'll never discover the true value within if you can't get by the small things.)

5 out of 5 stars The PowerPoint Guide to Buy.......2000-01-03

There is a lot to keep in mind when preparing and delivering your presentation. This book is a great guide to help most create and deliver a presentation that will shine. I found the coverage of PowerPoint comprehensive. Everything I wanted to do was there, plus suggestions and tips for better impact and saving time. The language is friendly and did not make me feel like a child or dummy. The detail is there when I need it. The use of headings, colour and cutouts let me jump quickly to the parts I need.

3 out of 5 stars Microsoft Office @2000 -ShellyCashman Series Book.......2005-09-27

The book itself is very good. I would recommend it to those who are just starting to learn and for those who need to brush up on their skills or use as a desk reference. I did not like the "ring -binder" form as it seems flimsy and already was looking used when I got it due to shipping. I would suggest the other form for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book just skip the first chapters about computers!!!.......2004-09-30

The book is great but it is written for people who never had experience with computers. So I would advise anyone to skip those intial chapters. I highly recommend getting the spiral bound edition because the book is about the size of a major city's Yellow Pages and it is easier to handle.

The screen-by-screen instruction is terrific but of course, I ignore directions such as (open window, hit save, etc..). The lessons at the end of each project allow you to perform the lessons that you just learned. I would advise that you download the lessons on your computer instead of to a disk like the book recommends. Since I was just laid off, the book is great for brushing up on programs that you don't really use on a daily basis. I am planning to get the advanced versions of the book very soon.

This book is great and a keeper! I guarantee that even if you use a computer daily at work or school you will still learn many new tricks and shortcuts from this book. I would highly recommend it to someone who is trying to learn new things in the Microsoft Office Suites!

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Series.......2003-02-28

If you can't learn MS Office 2000 or XP using the Shelly Cashman series I believe you will never learn using another series. These books help me tremendously to become Master Certified in Office 2000. I'm also in the process of becoming Master Certified in XP using the Shelly Cashman series. When MS Office 11 comes out later this year I will invest in that series also.

2 out of 5 stars The Good News and The Bad News.......2003-06-24

I taught classes of adults with this book. I had many complaints about the fact that it was difficult to follow. Some of the exercises were ambiguous and some were over wrought with typing. It did have poor planning on the organizational side. While it built on the previous exercises, sometimes it was ambitious on some items and lacking on others. A similar amount of time was spent on 'opening' a document as was spent on creating a 'table.' On the positive side, if you already know what you are doing, it was easy to follow. If you already know what you are doing, you probably don't need this book.

1 out of 5 stars Random organization, separates the teaching from the doing.......2000-08-21

I teach computer applications to 8th graders, and this book is a disappointment to me and my students. It is geared more toward the business worker. The order in which it teaches skills is completely random. For example, it teaches advanced operations such as how to create envelopes and labels before it teaches the most basic functions such as how to format text. It also focuses too much on the Internet capabilities of MS Office 2000 (useless "bloatware" if you ask me).

Another problem is the presentation of the lessons. It lists the steps to complete a task, then has an exercise to be completed. It would be much more helpful if the students were able to DO the steps while the book explains them, THEN have exercises to do on their own. Instead, the book separates the teaching from the doing. This is a very ineffective way to learn.

Finally, the confusing language it sometimes uses doesn't help either. My students constantly ask for clarification. Stay clear of this one. There must be better books out there.

    5 out of 5 stars A life-saver........1999-12-01

This book was a real life-saver for me, and I know it's good enough to be used in some computer prep courses in high schools around here. This is the third DDC book I've used, and all three have been great. They're not flashy, but their step-by-step style actually makes it easier and faster to learn for the average person. Yes, there are some typos and glitches here and there, but they're hardly the prohibitive stumbling blocks the other reviews seem to suggest. I'd not be afraid to buy it. And some of DDC's other stuff--like the other two titles I got on Word and Access--is MOUS Certified BY MICROSOFT and will (I hope!) get me ready for the MOUS Certification exam.
