3D Studio Max R3: f/x & Design does not try to cover everything you need to know about Kinetix's complex and flexible 3-D graphics and animation system. Instead, it focuses on two specific features: materials and modeling. By narrowing the focus of the book, the authors have the breathing room needed to concentrate on these two important facets.

The 140-page section on materials goes into precise detail on creating and using diffuse maps, bump and displacement maps, animated maps, animated maps for effects, and raytraced and anisotropic effects. Realistic materials like glass and metals and effects materials like glowing edges and dissolving surfaces are explored. All of the projects and files used in all chapters are available on the enclosed CD-ROM.

Following "Materials" is 130 pages on modeling. The use of MeshSmooth and other Max modeling and model distortion tools is demonstrated, as is using the Morpher modifier. The section on SurfaceTools is the lion's share of the modeling section, and rightly so. Any Max user should have control of this advanced modeling tool.

3D Studio Max R3: f/x & Design also looks beyond materials and modeling. The book features a well-written section discussing Max's new rendering features, lighting, and material fundamentals, as well as a section covering MaxScript and some plug-ins.

If your Max skills have reached a plateau and you're ready for the next level, f/x & Design might be the book that'll jumpstart those skills into the next realm of 3-D animation and design. --Mike Caputo

2 out of 5 stars Money badly spent.......2003-06-06

I specifically targeted this book because of the disintegrate material effect but was unable to follow it cos of missing parts in the tutorials/scenes. upon trying to work it out my self , I still havent I will have to put this book in the toilet as emergency toilet paper. I was really dissappointed when I sent emails to coriolis to try and get the proper tut file scenes (2 years ago) and still havent recieved any feedback, this is so frustrating. I'll never buy another coriolis text again.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Max book.......2001-04-13

Wow, I don't know if they have awards for these kinds of books, but Jon Bell should be able to run away with this one.

He covers a lot of great stuff in this book including all the new things that R3 has. Including Flex, the new material options, plus it has some sweet models you can try. Like the SR-71 Blackbird, and an alien.

The CD that comes with is also the best to come around in a long time. It includes a bonus material library, hordes of free plugins including Greeble!, lots of free maps and chapter files. The Cd itself is worth the 40-50 bucks.

This one is worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book with Cool Textures, Models and Plugins!.......2000-07-26

If you want to get more out of 3D Studio MAX, then this book's for you. The chapters on advanced materials and lighting helped me create better-looking scenes immediately, and the special-effects stuff (including the great Greeble plugin) is well worth the price of the book. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Lots of pretty pictures, poor tutorials.......2000-05-23

This book isn't much more than a picutre book, showing what 3D Studio MAX R3 is capable of. The tutorials are poorly put together, and some of them are missing steps which for some users might not be able to complete them. Not a book I recommend buying.

5 out of 5 stars A given in anyone's library.......2000-05-13

If there were ever 2 things I couldn't do well they were making good Materials and Organic Modelling...until I bought this book. Unlike other books that tell you how to recreate their effects, this book tells you what the steps presented do, allowing you to recreate and tweak them as you need. Excellent book!

3D Studio Max 3 is large, robust, and comprehensive, just like the massive 3D Studio Max 3 Bible. With its 1,100 pages, including a 50-page index, it covers everything you care to know about the basic Max package.

Beginning with all the new features available in release 3 (of which there are many) the book continues on to subjects such as rendering, post-production, and ways to extend the power of Max using plug-ins and Maxscript.

Although a hefty book, its 41 chapters aren't padded with fluff or screen shots--in fact, more screen shots would be welcome. Each page is filled with step-by-step instructions, tips, and notes on how to use just about any feature in Max, from navigating and customizing the Max interface to basic and advanced modeling, using and controlling lights and cameras, and deformations.

Not only does the Max Bible explain everything (there's even a whole chapter on setting up network rendering), but each chapter also has at least one, usually two, step-by-step tutorials to demonstrate the features described. The tutorials are usually very short and to the point since they are designed to demonstrate the workings of a specific feature. For example, the tutorial on using the Motion Capture controller consists of only four steps, using the example of animating a pencil over the surface of a sheet of paper. All the objects are made from primitives, and no time is wasted on modeling and texturing a realistic pencil or a paper surface.

While the short tutorials are a great way to learn quickly, longer, more in-depth lessons would be helpful. The color gallery pages do offer some nice examples of high-level work, but there is no explanation of how they were created or how the artist approached the scene.

The accompanying CD-ROM offers numerous models, in addition to the tutorial elements used throughout the book, plus the added bonus of a set of plug-ins for Max 3. The gear-making primitive, the toy brick-making primitive, and several rendering plug-ins (TV Image is cool) are more than worth the cost of the book.

If you need a single point of reference to keep handy when working in Max, 3D Studio Max 3 Bible is a good place to start. If you buy two, you can use them to do arm curls while your version of Toy Story is rendering. --Mike Caputo

2 out of 5 stars Not For Newbies.......2004-09-05

I bought this book believing in all the positive reviews and with the hopes of improving my skills in 3D modeling and animation as necessary for my job. While the book does tell plenty about WHAT 3D Max can do, it falls short of explaining EXACTLY HOW to perform many things. Without knowing exact semantics, it is very difficult to find explanations of specific topics. With minimal classroom training under my belt, I find this book worthless in helping me to learn more, without first knowing how to exactly phrase what I am attempting to learn. I now need to buy a 'Dummies' type of book for cross-referencing and for learning the simplest of modeling and animation semantics and techniques so that I can use this book to learn more.

Great book for the classroom, bad book for those 'home schooling.'

4 out of 5 stars Newbie Gives Thumbs Up.......2001-07-03

I'm brand spanking new to modeling and especialy new to Max. Although the terminology used frequently in this book is with those who have learned basic 3D concepts in mind, the book is a great reference as a walk through giving brief explanation of what almost all of the buttons and options do giving a beginner and understanding of how to get around in Max. After making it 60% of the way through the book, I have now successfully constructed and texured my own model however it lacks detail as the book doesn't go very far into modeling technique, but as you might've seen the size of the book, you can see that this information is best left to another guide. The only disappointment I had was that with some of the tutorials the author tends to leave out information with assumption that the reader has been up and modeling for some time. Otherwise, this is an excellent, must have especialy if you don't have the software manuals.

4 out of 5 stars Will help a walker to sprint, but cant make a newbie walk.......2001-05-24

You've got to walk before you learn to sprint. A baby should crawl before it walks. This book is NOT for those who dont know how to crawl their way around max or dont have a basic knowledge of the programs interface. ITS for people like me who have been through all the other tutorial type books (like inside 3dsmax) and now just want a COMPREHESIVE description of the actions that max can and cannot perform. If that is what you need then this is what you should buy. if THATS NOT what you need, buy it anyway because you'll need it when you've finished the other "tutorial type" books.

The 3D Studio Max application is huge, and it has tremendous flexibility. New users can easily be intimidated by the interface, even if all they want to do is create some animated text. 3D Studio Max 3 Visual QuickStart Guide can help any new user get off the ground and start rendering in a matter of a few hours or less.

This lightweight guide was designed from the ground up for students. It sits comfortably in one's lap, it is easy to get through, and the table of contents is thorough. Too bad it doesn't have a spiral binding--the conventional bookbinding is the only thing keeping it from lying flat, open, and accessible on one's desk.

Each page contains two columns: one for a short, step-by-step tutorial, and the other for matching pictures. About half the pages have tips on things to do and things to avoid for any given topic, some of which may be new to you (using the F5, F6, or F7 commands to constrain the movement of an object to one axis, for example).

The first two chapters cover getting started and navigation and display options. The next three chapters cover creating and distorting a basic shape, followed by a chapter on animation. Do not underestimate these introductory chapters--even jaded, experienced users will likely glean some new keyboard tricks.

The remaining chapters begin to leave the basics behind as they go into more detail on topics like animating, rendering, building complex objects, texturing, and using cameras and lights.

Few book series are as thoughtfully produced as Peachpit Press's Visual QuickStart Guides. Each one is inexpensive, concise, and informative. 3D Studio Max 3 Visual Quickstart Guide is no exception. --Mike Caputo

    Book Description

The market for skilled 3D artists is booming, and the tool-of-the-trade most in demand is 3D Studio MAX, from Kinetix (a subsidiary of Autodesk). This pricey but ubiquitous program is the choice of professional artists (working on Windows NT or 95) everywhere for creating 3D images for print and screen, plus animations for television, movies, and the Web. The addition of the dimension of depth makes 3D software exponentially more complex than normal graphics software, both conceptually and operationally. Factor in the additional dimension of time in the animation component and the complexities go through the roof. This book, like all books in Peachpit's VQS series will be an excellent introduction to 3D Studio MAX 3 for beginners, incorporating lots of step-by-step instructions, with plenty of visual examples. The author is an experienced 3D Studio MAX teacher as well as an accomplished digital artist and her illustrations will be unusually appealing for a book on this subject.

    Hello!

This is a great book to get, to get you past the hurdle of learn 3DSMax R3. Once you read thru the book, either from start to finish or go to specific sections it will help you understand the program quickly.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2001-07-22

I found this book to be very helpful and to the point. I appreciated the focus on the interface of the program. My background in 3d modeling and animation was nil until I got this book. As with any type of graphic software, you must come into it with a goal. With that in mind this book will get you from concept to "reality" very quickly. Buy this book

    5 out of 5 stars For a true beginner...........2001-01-24

I am just start to get into this world of 3D. This book is a big help seeing as how I had a problem putting a material on a sphere. This big is making the confusing well not so confusing. I like this big. While using this book I have been doing advanced thing by using tutorial from the net. I plan to finish this book and get me a Advanced Book. But how can you go wrong with Peachpit Books. I mean this is truely a book that a beginner needs.

    5 out of 5 stars Beginner's paradise.......2001-01-11

If you want to begin learning 3d Studio Max, this is THE book. I still reference it now. The examples are short and easy. No long explanations. By the end of the book, you will be able to make terrains, render fog, etc. This will not get you into Character Studio, or advanced topics which you will have to find in another book, but this book will get you more than started. I bought 3d Studio Max r3 Bible and it left me confused. This book started me on my way. There were a few minor mistakes in the book, but not enough to depreciate the quality.

2 out of 5 stars So basic its boring.......2000-12-21

I'm a beginning CGI artist who recently purchased 3D Studio Max. I was looking for a basic beginners guide. I expected a good beginners book because I own other peachpit press books and they are wonderful. Taking one look I was disappointed because this book didn't offer very much. Half of the stuff discussed in the book I learned by just playing around in the program. There are several books that are better then this one. I even found the tutorial book that comes with the program more helpful. Your better off spending a few extra bucks and getting something with some substance.

The enormous complexity and depth of 3D Studio Max is explored in this installment in the In Depth series from Coriolis Press. Written by an experienced user and teacher, 3D Studio Max R3 in Depth reads like a handbook, course book, and reference manual, all in one.

The book starts off with a general overview of how the program thinks and a rundown of the interface. "Working in Max," Part II, describes a working methodology for navigating the program, managing the interface, and using Max efficiently. Part III, "Modeling," is the strongest section in the book. Comprising six chapters, this section compares every method for modeling that's available currently in Max: using primitives, mesh-level control, modifiers, patch, and NURBS modeling. There's enough information here to help any beginner get his or her head around Max's modeling philosophy.

The remaining sections discuss materials and textures (Part IV), lighting, camera control and rendering (Part V), and animation (Part VI). The accompanying CD-ROM includes 250 Max scene files that illustrate not only every topic that's covered in the book, but also virtually every tool in Max.

Although the book is comprehensive and designed to take the novice to a fairly proficient level, it could easily have a sequel. Some areas not covered include animated texture maps, a deeper look at render effects, and (although the section on animation is good) character animation. The absence of these topics leaves room for deeper coverage of others, however.

An inspiring gallery of color images includes some artful and abstract work that is almost worth the cost of the book. It's refreshing to see a program like Max being used in this way, and even more so when the images are given color press.

This book might not be the best choice for a strong intermediate user who's looking to advance to the next level, but 3D Studio Max R3 in Depth would make a worthwhile addition to the library of any beginning Max user. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars used book looks new and un-used.......2001-12-27

I'm new to 3D max and dont really plan on making money useing it, so I decided to try used books on Max and save a few $ and just learn to enjoy the world of 3D for my own use, I must say that the 3 used books I bought were completely new and appeared un-used, as well as the CD's un-opened or used. Also surpisingly that all 3 arrived within 4 working days of ordering, during xmas no less......hats off to all involved, you seem to have your act together. My advice to novices like myself, try the used books and save a chunk of change, you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A treasure for the confused dabbler.......2001-08-10

I am a 3D amateur and had been dabbling with 3D Studio since R4 for DOS. This is obviously not an intuitive product to the amateur, so trying to learn it alone will never really get you far. I realised this and meant to buy a book to help me through for a long time. Until I did, I got a vague grasp on many of the fundamental concepts 3D Studio uses and could do some crude modeling & animations. I finally decided to buy a book and this was it. After years of guesswork I found this book beautifully unravelling the concepts to me and making all the pieces of the puzzle come together, finally making sense, while discovering lots of new features I never knew were there.

I am not an artist, nor a 3D expert, but this book has helped me make sense of 3D Studio Max because its writing is very understandable and the author goes a long way to helping the complete beginner understand the product's deep concepts with many dedicated sections, such as the coordinate systems, the modifier stack and the cloning options (copy/instance/reference) to name a few. I can't help thinking that these are subtle areas that other references may easily tend to overlook.

The book is filled with step by step examples that demonstrate the concepts covered and provide a rich hands-on experience with Max as you learn. The author makes a good point about the many ways to get the same job done and hilights many of the smart shortcuts you can use to save time on the way, which can only be otherwise learnt by experience.

I have been reading this book to get a feel for the fundamentals but I have frequently referred to individual chapters for detailed information on a feature I might be trying to use, in which case the book was quick to make things clear and allow me to move on with my work and get the expected results.

The book is separated into 6 parts as follows:

    1. 3D Studio Max - The Big Picture

    2. Working in Max

    3. Modeling (includes NURBS)

    4. Materials & Textures

    5. Lights, Camera, Render!

    6. Animation

The book is very easy to follow, clearly written, covers all important aspects a beginner could wish to learn and has so far never let me down in my quest for 3D Studio Max knowledge and experience. Overall I would consider this a book for beginners to intermediate users and an ideal match for my own case as a long time dabbler with a need to understand the product that could never be achieved without a friendly and insightful guide as this. The author himself targets the book at:

    - Beginners with 3D Applications in general (hence the emphasis on backgrounders)

    - Experienced users of 3D Studio Max in search of a stronger background

    - People looking for a stronger reference than the product documentation

I give it 5 stars for its broad coverage (it doesn't focus mainly on modeling or animation for example), depth of content (I didn't find any section too shallow), easy reading and the multitude of backgrounders and examples. I won't be interested in another Max book until I'm a comfortably proficient 3D artist.

    .

This amazing book is right set for those who wich to strengthen their intermediate knowledge with MAX. Beware, nevertheless for the beginners.

I advise to U all a more friendly reading before U get trough this book. You'll see that all becomes much more easy after that!

"Harnessing 3D Studio MAX 3.0" by Michele Bousquet seems to me like a good bet. Although it's very hard to find here in Portugal.

It's a little bit expensive, but if U count the time U spare, it's worthy!

Returning to "MAX R3 in Depth".

The author takes us a little bit further in making us think harder, and that's good! ((: But the knowledge he passes through, due to his experience, is very good and stays in our minds!

It's only a little bit difficult to assimilate if U don't have a solid background!

Having this book in our shelves is really a "must"! Good reading! ((:

    .

Voltando ao 'MAX R3 in depth'.

    Boa leitura! ((:

If mastering 3D Studio Max is your goal, Mastering 3D Studio Max R3 makes a solid cornerstone on which to build your library. While not the easiest book to use, it is--like the software--big, rich, and full of good information. It thoroughly discusses the foundation of the topic (basic 3-D concepts, basic Max concepts, the Max interface, modeling, lighting, rendering), and contains excellent chapters on materials, lighting, rendering, and compositing.

Part VI, "Using MaxScript," is the shining star; by itself, it's worth the cost of this massive tome. Spanning well over 200 pages, this section covers the basics of MaxScript, how to manipulate scenes with MaxScript, animating with MaxScript by using controllers and keyframes, and creating plug-in scripts. If you want to squeeze the most from MaxScript, you'll be in heaven with this section.

The book falls short in two areas, unfortunately. The first is that there are no color illustrations to enhance the text on lighting, materials, and rendering. The second is that there is little information on animation and virtually none on character animation. Of the 745 pages, approximately 65 discuss creating and tweaking animation in Max. If you plan on using Max for complex animation of any kind, this book won't work for you. --Mike Caputo

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderflul Book! Very Well Written! Excellent Information.......2001-08-07

Mastering 3ds Max R3 is an excellent source of information about the 3ds Max program. Although this book seems a bit intimidating because of it's size, 700+ pages, it's very easy to read and understand. The authors have done a wonderful job in explaining the various methods of rendering for this application. I really enjoyed reading about modeling and animation with applying materials and lighting techniques. This book is so well organized that I found myself reading 30 pages at a time without feeling tired or bored. The novice and professional alike will find the section on shortcut keys and MaxScript very useful. I myself was particulaly found of the sections about NURBS curves and the raytrace techniques. The most tedious part of the book are chapters 13-18 which goes into detail about MaxScript, the backbone of the 3ds max program. I found this section to be very informative and necessary to learn. I also appreciated the authors no nonsense approach to learning the application, in which they mentioned that the learning process takes time so enjoy yourself. In conclusion, I think that anyone interested in purchasing this book will soon realize that it was money well spent and that they will enjoy reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Luminous Writing, a Model of Clarity.......2001-05-01

3D Studio MAX is, to put it mildly, a difficult program to learn to use, and there is a dearth of texts on the topic that rise above Fair-to-Middling. In a sense, that's no longer an issue, as this book by Chris Murray and his team, including talented newcomer Catalina Woods, has set a standard which any of its challengers is unlikely to approach. I feel comfortable saying this simply because, with one possible exception, this is the finest software guide I've encountered. Even the most arcane subjects, for example, Bezier splines, are explained in a manner that not only makes them transparent, but wholly natural, as if you've been thinking in terms of them all along. Such a level of writing and integration is rare enough in any technical undertaking, but is simply breathtaking given the inherent complexity of the program. Highly, highly recommended.

As the author of this book, I understand and share the frustration of missing files. Those that purchase the book can contact me directly and I will immeadiately forward a CD with any missing files to them, at no extra charge. (My contact info is in the book.)

I followed his instructions and contacted him with my mailing address and got this reply:

        Darren,

Thanks for purchasing the book. If you send me your snail mail address I will have a new CD forwarded to you.

        Regards,

        Chris Murray

Well two weeks had gone by and there was no sign of the missing files. I sent a follow up message, and another one and another one and another one. Five in fact. Each time the author told me how busy he was and that he would get to it soon. That was six months ago and he never did send the files. I like the book a lot but even after pleading with him repeatedly for months on end, he wouldn't live up to the promise of providing the files. Many of the projects in the book can't be completed without the files so put that into consideration when purchasing. Good luck friends...
