Book Description

No, you’re not losing your mind. And you’re definitely not alone. There’s Jimmy Carter, forgetting the nuclear launch codes in a suit at the dry cleaners. Rod Stewart fumbling for the name of the intense first love who inspired “Maggie Mae.” G. K. Chesterton writing a long letter to his mother announcing the good news about his engagement—while his mother is in the room with him. Marilyn Monroe blowing the same line through 52 takes during the filming of Some Like It Hot.

Celebrating history’s greatest mental lapses, is a perfect impulse book in the fine gift format of Famous Last Words. Not just outlandishly funny, it’s also a book of great comfort—after all, having a senior moment puts you in the company of Einstein, Lincoln, Beethoven, Newton, Toscanini, and a whole assortment of presidents, poets, philosophers, popes, and Nobel Prize–winners. Talk about gaffes. Here are best men forgetting to show up at the wedding. Judges staggered by the incompetence of their previous decisions. Senators frozen in front of TV cameras. Olympic officials gazing absently while bewildered runners continue through the finish line. Bono losing the only copy of his lyrics to a new album. Forget to pick up your copy today!

4 out of 5 stars Don't forget to buy this one!.......2007-09-19

Tom Friedman's humorous and well-researched collection of outrageous moments of forgetfulness in business, theater, politics, and every day life is sure to be a favorite. At least, it will make you feel somewhat better about yourself when you forget the keys, a name, or an appointment.

We are in the immortal company of the forgetful Albert Einstein, Doris Day, and Mark Twain, who claimed to be so deteriorated in his faculties that he "cannot remember any but the things that never happened."

This one's a keeper and you'll find yourself quoting from it often!

3 out of 5 stars Senior Moments.......2006-11-11

The size of the book is exceptionally small especially for us seniors. For a book geared for the older generation, the publisher did not take into consideration that our eye sight is not what it use to be. It would have been more hilarious if this book would have been written in large print. I have to get out my reading glasses or my magnifying glass to be able to read it. The content is great.

5 out of 5 stars this book is funny or i'm getting old (or both).......2006-11-10

This is a painfully funny book. The research is amazing, and the anecdotes of mental lapses by everyone from Archimedes to Mick Jagger are funnier than I wanted them to be, because I recognized myself in them way too often. At least we can get some rueful chuckles as we ride the narrative arc of life.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Smart.......2006-11-10

Funny and smart. A superb job capturing the quirkiness of human beings. The perfect gift for those moments needing a light touch.

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Title!.......2006-11-06

The book is full of short snippets regarding memory lapses from all ages. It is not a book of anecdotes on Senior Moments at all. There are several funny stories. But if you are purchasing this for a gift for a senior, expecting what the title pronounces, you may be disappointed.

Book Description

Tom Friedman is an unusual young American sculptor who produces quirky yet beautiful sculptures out of household objects - pencils, plastic cups, laundry detergent, paper straws. Featured in cream and in a one-person presentation at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Friedman has quickly gained an impressive following of some of the most attentive and influential contemporary art-watchers in the United States. This is art which raises questions about the making and seeing of art, about the pleasures of small transformations producing sudden beauty. This book will coincide with Friedman's first major American museum tour, to be held in 2000-2002.American art critic Bruce Hainley examines the artist's work as a kind of giant self-portrait. Poet and novelist Dennis Cooper discusses with the artist such unexpected influences as contemporary electronic music. Guardian art critic Adrian Searle looks at the artist's work Untitled, 1993 - a ring of plastic cups in a home-made Minimalist tradition. The Artist's Choices are The Dinner Party (1919) by Swiss writer Robert Walser, and the glossary to Info-Psychology (1975-76) by Timothy Leary, the cult psychologist who advocated the use of psychedelic drugs. Facsimiles of the artist's notebooks and text works are published alongside an important interview by curator Robert Storr.

Tom Friedman is amazing. His work defines patience, creativity and a sense of humor. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating to Look at.......2003-11-12

Tom Friedman is a conceptual artist whose work has the remarkable ability to intrigue almost anyone. This book is impossible to not examine: the works are wonders, the layout and photography are beautiful, and the text is as enlightening as it is thought provoking.
I'm a High School English teacher and I sometimes leave this book out so that unsuspecting students can open it and marvel at Friedman's work: The bubblegum piece and the toothpicks never escape their attention. I've yet to meet anyone who can simply dismiss Friedman's work they way most installation art is written-off as unappealing to anyone without an art degree.
While the interview with Friedman occasionally lapses into vacuous philosophizing, it is surprisingly lucid and often adds another dimension to the viewer/reader's engagement of a particular piece. Friedman is especially good at addressing (and dismissing) the common (and lazy) description of his work as "obsessive."
This book's representation of Friedman's work has a popular appeal that is inextricably intertwined with its philosophical and artistic inquiry:
"bubble gum": What is craft?
"1,000 hours of staring "What is history?
"Ball of feaces": What is the line between existing and not existing?
In short: burn your art history books and replace them with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great artist, Great collection.......2003-04-07

Tom Friedman takes household objects and...well read the book jacket if you want a description of what Friedman does, the fact is this is a great book. The obsessive nature of Friedman's work really comes through in this collection, with descriptions of the painstaking process Friedman went through to create his works. One such work is a blank piece of paper that Tom Friedman literally stared at for a thousand hours, not consecutively of course. Friedman explains his thought process, how he conceptualizes his art. The "1000 hours of Staring" for example, are Friedman's attempts to "create" a history to an object (without knowing the "history" of the piece, you would simply be looking at a blank piece of paper)

It would probably be more impressive to see these pieces in person, (especially in his pieces that are very very small or emphasize 'imagined' space such as the area that Friedman had a witch put a hex on). To anyone who hate art installations and the like this book may change your mind. But don't think that Friedman only does installations, his work covers many different areas, from photograhpy to sculpture and illustration. The one quality that links all these mediums is Friedman's intricate, detailed thought process. Even people who aren't into modern art will be forced to meditate on the nature of the objects Friendman employs. Can't say enough about this book. Pick it up even if you think you don't like post modernism, pick it up even if you hate art.

5 out of 5 stars You Are There.......2007-07-01

This review refers to the Unabridged Audio Cassette edtion of "The Essential Lewis and Clark" Landon Y. Jones, editor

These selections from the journals of Captains Lewis and Clark during their explorations in the early 1800's is not the complete text of their writings, but after 6 hours of listening you will come away with more then 'essential ' knowledge of what took place. The selections will take you the entire distance of this important and historical journey, and you will feel like you are part of it. Read by two great voices, Peter Friedman ("Brooklyn Bridge"), and Tom Wopat ("The Dukes of Hazzard"), each giving the Captains very individual and wonderful voices, and making it easy to know who's journals you are listening to.

Through the rivers and mountains, the Great Plains, you are there with them. It's not only an important piece of American History, but great adventures to get caught up in every step of the way, as they navigate unknown and untried routes, meet with native Americans, friendly and unfriendly, fight the elements, wild animals and mosquitoes that nearly ate them alive. So many adventurous episodes to savor in their words. They named the rivers, carved routes for the future, at times facing danger and hunger. I especially enjoyed hearing of their meetings and relations with the various tribes of Indians.

The selections read are unabridged and their every thought captured for us to savor. I found Lewis's writings to be very animated and lengthy detailed accounts of the journey. Clark's seemed more abbreviated, but, to the point. Both put you right there with them and are eloquently written. Exciting and adventurous as they are an important and treasured part of American History. There is also a narrator to set the scenes and follow the path.

Highly recommended not only for history buffs, but for those studying this part of American History in school. If I had had this audio edition 40 years ago in History class, I certainly would have paid more attention! The journals can't help but spark your interest. It is great for adventure story lovers.

There are 4 two sided cassettes with excellent sound quality.

Enjoy the read... I did...Laurie

5 out of 5 stars If this were a movie you'd say it's a good story but..........2005-03-24

... but the events described in the journals actually happened, and they are fascinating! Their means of travel, of survival, of communicating with the Indians, of hunting game and chasing and being chased by bears -- all described in such detail that you can easily picture it. In addition to being adventurers, these men were romantics and intellectuals. It is no wonder that once their journals reached the east, people started coming west in droves to see the beautiful lands and abundant game they described. The CDs are great for a long drive or the daily commute.

5 out of 5 stars All the good stuff.......2000-03-21

Are you a Lewis and Clark buff, just starting out? You've read "Undaunted Courage" by Stephen Ambrose, and perhaps a couple other Lewis and Clark books. It's time to read the journals, but you are daunted by the thought of all that early 19th century wordiness, spelling and such?

Me too.

This book is great. It's just what it says it is. All the good stuff from Lewis and Clark's copious journals, all the highlights, well edited. The value of this book is as a starting place, perhaps. It's short enought to be read easily over a few days. Like all good introductions, then, if you want more you know where to look, and you'll now know what to expect. Landon Jones provides all the accessibility; Lewis and Clark still provide the wonder.

    Book Description

Presenting unique and in-depth collaborations and editions with leading contemporary artists, Parkett has been the foremost international journal on contemporary art for nearly two decades. Issue No. 63 features collaborations with Tracey Emin, William Kentridge, and Gregor Schneider, three artists whose highly personal works affect viewers in an evocative manner, yet through strikingly different means. Emin bares her soul from the inside out, in her confessional multimedia photographs, drawings, videos, and installations. Kentridge's highly-charged films, drawings, sculptures, and theatrical productions analyze the history of his native South Africa and the implications and legacy of apartheid. And finally, Schneider's inside-out abodes turn the seemingly cozy and reassuring context of "home" into a haunting maze of opened and closed rooms, claustrophobic corridors and tunnels, and impenetrable windows and doors. Each of these artists draws us into their private worlds, diminishing the boundaries between artist and audience.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Learn from the master!.......2006-01-16

I recently received this book as a gift and I am very pleased I did. This is such a well-written cookbook, by an author who is clearly passionate about food. The personal, completely unpretentious tone of the author is so refreshing and makes for a very pleasant and easy read. I love how Mr. Valenti shares his personal experiences with food, from his (very tasty) upbringing in an Italian family, to his early years working as an apprentice in high caliber kitchens, to the accomplished chef he has become today. Though he never went to culinary school, Tom Valenti is undoubtedly a master of his craft, and all it takes is a taste of his wonderful dishes to learn that. What I really enjoy about his recipes is so many of them, when broken down, are based on simplicity, (a pinch of sugar here, a touch of vinegar there). Yet the end results are far from simple. They are gastronomic masterpieces! I feel confident that there isn't one recipe in his book that isn't heaven on a plate! My only complaint with this book is the fact that some of his recipes rely on ingredients that are not normally found in common supermarkets and more importantly, are not normal fare for the average home dinner table. Like the handful of recipes centered around rabbit, tripe, quail and guinea hens. I doubt I'll be cooking any rabbit in my future, though I'm sure his preparation of it is brilliant! Having said that, I still think this book is a treasure trove of fabulous recipes that are sure to become family favorites, because above all, Tom's dishes are almost always in the end "comfort food". And he knows how to feed your soul!

5 out of 5 stars Restaurant Dishes with Restaurant Tricks and Tips.......2004-05-12

When Tom Valenti wrote his second book, ?Soups, Stews, and One Pot Meals?, he must have been concentrating on simple dishes to atone for the relatively complicated recipes he put in this, his first book. As always, ?simple? and ?complicated? are loaded words in culinary procedures. What appears complicated to some because it involves cooking several different components of a dish separately may be simple to others because each of the individual steps are simple and the end result leaves the flavors of the ingredients intact, or pleasantly accentuated by the cooking procedure and seasonings.

Valenti?s invitation to HIS kitchen is significant in that he is very fond of a few techniques which are uncommon among is colleagues in other restaurant kitchens. His most interesting twist is in the routine use of sugar as a seasoning along with salt and pepper. He is also exceptionally fond of using acids like citrus and white wine vinegars and bacon, especially smoked and double smoked bacon. It seems odd that a chef with Italian leanings and background is not dedicated to using pancetta; however, he finds it is a bit too salty to his taste. The author also shows an extraordinary respect for other common ingredients such as water. One comment on the author?s use of salt and pasta cooking water is to correct his adjusting the amount of salt to the amount of pasta. The proper technique should be to set the amount of salt by the amount of water. It is the concentration of salt in the water that is important, because that is the physical property that determines how much salt reaches the pasta.

While it is not Valenti?s object in this book to simplify recipes, he does make a special point of showing the cook the places at which it is appropriate to parts of dishes ahead of service. This doubles the value of the book. The primary value of cookbooks by talented professional chefs is to provide recipes with a lot of pizzazz for entertaining. Valenti adds the restaurant tricks which allow the prep chefs to do the kind of advance work which makes the line chef able to put together the dish quickly at the time of service. The author even succeeds in describing how to bring a risotto to an almost complete state, and hold it ?in stasis? until it can be finished for service.

Otherwise, Valenti does not skimp on the details. He provides a larger than average selection of stock and broth recipes, which impress me because they include a mushroom stock. Ever since I tasted the water left from rehydrating dried mushrooms almost forty years ago, I wondered why mushroom broth was not a more important ingredient in cooking.

Valenti?s selection of dishes is an entertaining mix of old standards such as Panzanella salad and a Cuban sandwich with inventive original (or at least unusual) dishes. There are also some dishes that give a very useful twist on favorite combinations. Broccoli Rabe and sausage is a classic Italian combination (See Lydia Bastianich?s Italian cookbook). Valenti adds variety to the dish by adding orecchiette, making it a full veg / starch / protein dish. He also adds interest by incorporating a recipe for homemade sausage to make the dish even more interesting. I may be inclined to find his method for creating loose sausage meat just a bit too simple, but as the author points out, the homemade sausage will make a huge impression on your guests. Speaking of sandwiches, this is one of the very few cookbooks which presents a good selection of recipes for sandwiches. And, these are not your typical deli style fare. Some recipes such as the classic Poorboy are fairly simple, but others are pretty involved. Most recipes use both fish and vegetables in unusual ways as in the grilled vegetable sandwich and the saut?ed spinach sandwich.

Aside from the chapter on sandwiches, the chapters are typical of almost every other Italian-centered cookbook, with chapters on Salads; Soups; Pasta and Risotto; Fish and Shellfish; Poultry and Game; Meats; Accompaniments; Vinaigrettes and Mayonnaises; and Desserts. The fish chapter is one of the largest, since fish and fishing is one of his passions. Valenti is true to his word at the beginning of the book as bacon appears in many recipes, even many fish recipes. Most of the desserts are fruit based and typical of an Italian sensibility.

One of the more distinctive characteristics of this book is the clarity in which the author presents recipes that may be just a bit on the complicated side for inexperienced cooks. Every recipe has an informative headnote that may explain the origin of the recipe or something of its attraction. All ingredients are neatly presented in a nicely shaded box with clear prep directions. The main attraction is the fact that the procedure is broken down into simple sentences, each beginning with the most important operative word in the technique. It is crystal clear that each step is to Warm or Add or Transfer or Lay or Repeat or Remove or do something Carefully of Gently. Valenti has done exactly what I do when I transcribe recipes by breaking everything down into simple steps.

Most dishes, especially main course dishes, are accompanied by a no nonsense wine recommendation.

Highly recommended for dedicated amateurs. The author does not compromise on technique. Valenti makes it as easy as possible for you to follow his lead to spectacular dishes.

    5 out of 5 stars Real Secrets.......2002-03-19

In this cookbook, the author seems willing to actually part with secrets he has learned and acquired from his professional training and experiences as a chef. Rather than present yet another collection of recipes that readers can imitate, Valenti seems interested in promoting in the home cook useful cooking skills and ways of adapting to what food is on hand, what time is available, and what interest one has in creative cooking. The introductory sections are informative and different from most other books', and while the main part of the volume is a selection of recipes, the emphasis is on adaptions and flavor. The dishes are often unique and the book reads well. The author's love of cooking shines through on every page, and he is no snob-- he bears in mind the constraints of time and equipment that the average experienced cook faces.

        Book Description

Admit it: You've sometimes wanted to laugh at contemporary art. During the past decade, humor has turned up with increasing frequency in galleries and museums, perhaps as an acknowledgment of the urgent need among artists and audiences alike to laugh at the absurdity of daily existence--and the art world itself. Situation Comedy presents more than 60 works--a selection of video and sound installations, paintings, sculptures, drawings, and photographs--by younger as well as more established artists, including Tom Friedman, Rodney Graham, Christian Jankowski, Laura Nova, William Pope.L, Richard Prince, Kay Rosen, Erika Rothenberg, John Waters, and Erwin Wurm. Employing parody, satire, slapstick and practical jokes, they use the leveling power of comedy to break down barriers of taste and to question authority at every turn.

          Book Description

Like some benign infestation, bubbles (and related forms) seem to be springing up everywhere lately in contemporary art. Thin Skin brings together some of the most interesting contemporary work involving malleable, inflatable materials, including pieces by James Lee Byars, Charles and Ray Eames, Olafur Eliasson, Tom Friedman, Piero Manzoni, Ernesto Neto, Pipilotti Rist, Miri Segal, and Andy Warhol. Thin Skin identifies their current popularity as a function of two contemporary conditions: a new awareness of 'in-between' spaces, spaces neither real nor completely virtual, situations neither entirely in our control nor totally beyond it; and a new understanding of our own bodies as permeable sensors in constant osmotic exchange as they move through these spaces. An original and thought-provoking accumulation of inflatables, Thin Skin proves that thinness and transparency are indeed the symbolic, and maybe even the real, skin that encase contemporary spaces and bodies.

          Book Description

With the skills of a master craftsman, the obsessiveness of a teenage model-airplane builder, and the sense of humor and world view of a conceptual, self-defeatist prankster, Tom Friedman constructs works of art that defy cynical, uptight abstractionists and bored, foggy-eyed slouchers. Here is a man who carved his self-portrait out of an aspirin tablet; who built a standing figure, over a meter tall, out of sugar cubes; who suspended a perfect pink sphere in the corner of a room by making it out of thousands of pieces of bubble gum (which kept it stuck there just right); and who created an ephemeral floor sculpture using red eraser shavings from who knows how many pencils. And let's not forget the perfectly detailed, to-scale sculptures of spiders, flies, and bees that seem to simply alight on the corner of a museum pedestal. Or the minty-blue monochrome wall-work made entirely of toothpaste. Or the piece of paper that had been stared at for 1,000 hours. In this hefty two-volume set, which comes slipped together in a quirky, tactile case, Friedman's anti-monumental oeuvre is presented in two parts. First comes an artist's book, conceived by Friedman himself and containing drawings, photographs and sketches. Book number two is a thorough catalogue in which the whole of the artist's output is described and analyzed, accompanied by his own writings and essays by Robert Storr, John Miller, Glenn D. Lowry, Dennis Cooper and John Waters, amongst others.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Set suits the subject........2005-03-28

If you are a fan of Tom Friedman's work, this two volume set is the best publication that has been published to date...covering all of his work through 2002. The slipcase is really unique, made of a textured cardboard, and the volumes themselves are beautifully printed and organized...with an abundance of information about Friedman's work and exhibition history.

The first volume is actually an artist book, put together by Friedman himself. It contains very little text, no critical text at all, and is composed of photos, sketches, and other "scrap book" type elements as a sort of record of the artist's progress. The volume is not useful to those not familiar with Friedman, but will give a rare insight into the process and mind of the artist...

The second colume is the gem of the set, and almost three times the length of the first. It contains documentation of the majority of Friedman's pieces, critical essays, interviews, and other texts. Most useful, is a very in depth exhibition history which lets the reader know what works were exhibited in a given show, with installation photos from major exhibitions...allowing one to see the various combinations that sculptures have been arranged in. This book is basically a much more in depth and better produced version of the "Contemporary Artist" volume by Phaidon, and fills in many of the gaps left from that more general survey.

Prada is setting a new standard for exhibition catalogs, and with each one I pick up, I remember how a good catalog can enrich one's appreciation of an artist beyond belief. It also can substitute for a given show one cannot see in person, if produced as well and with such great care as the Prada catalogs have been over the past few years.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive yet well worth the price.......2003-07-17

I ordered the Tom Friedman two volume set after reading through the Phaidon Contemporary Artist Series book on Friedman multiple times. Having researched Friedman and seen him speak in the past year I can honestly say this beautiful book contains the most indepth writings on the artist to date. The second volume of the book was compiled by the artist and is a wonderful compolation of his personal photographs, sketch book pages and works of art.
