Customer Reviews:
Very detailed.......2007-09-26
I am using this book as a first-time school newspaper advisor. The book has printable worksheets and lots of helpful guides.
I would suggest it being used for students who are at or above grade level, or doing the activities with partners, as many of the activities are very high level.
Good if you have a bunch of smart kids.......2006-01-11
It might be because I am teaching middle school journalism but I found the worksheets in this book to be pretty high end. Although I do recomend the book for survival I would recomend Judith Ann Isaacs books on Secondary School Journalism if you want to excell. The only problem is this other book is really hard to find.
The only book of its kind.......2001-02-01
Having been a high school newspaper adviser (notice, "adviser" and not "advisor"?) for 8 years, I am like the other reviewer who wishes this book would have been available much earlier. As it is, my first year of teaching in 1993 included four preps: English 10 Honors, English 9, newspaper, and yearbook. (Anybody want to say "Year of Insanity"?) While I did survive, I struggled that year because the resources for publication advisers are very few. Starting almost from scratch and given very little in support, I ended up putting together my own bound journalism resource book, which is similar in many ways to Osborn's work. But the "Survival Guide" I bought last year is still worthwhile for me to have on hand because it has a number of "cool" sheets that can be photocopied. (Kudos for the wire spine that make turning pages and laying them on the photocopier simple!) Only those who have advised high school publications can fully appreciate the words of wisdom Osborn has because she has obviously been there, done that. Every principal should order a copy for the school's journalism teacher. I certainly plan on utilizing mine in the years to come.
Wonderfully well organized resource!.......2000-03-31
Both the new and the seasoned newspaper adviser will benefit from this book. It is full of tips and advice to help journalism teachers to both monitor and challenge their students. The workshop units are well designed to teach beginning journalism students new concepts and allow advanced students to sharpen their skills. The format lends itself to easy incorporation into lesson plans and reviews. A sample style book is included which can be adopted and personalized for any high school. I only wish I had ordered this book earlier.

English Teacher's Survival Guide: Ready-to-Use Techniques & Materials for Grades 7-12
ASIN: 0325008280 |
Book Description
You're reading as fast as you can, but the pile of unread essays grows taller and taller. Guilt mounts. Students want to know when their papers will come back. Grading begins consuming all your energy, your weekends, your life.
Grading papers is a fact of life, especially in English classrooms, and the paper load is a leading cause of teacher burnout. Fortunately, Carl Jago's here to help, and in Papers, Papers, Papers, she offers you advice honed from thirty-one years in the English classroom and forty-five thousand papers worth of grading. You'll not only get through stacks of papers, but you'll do so accurately, completely, and with the time you need to give each and every student in your classes the attention they deserve.
Ever practical and always professional, Jago suggests techniques that can be implemented right away to turn your mountain of essays into a foothill. She covers every aspect of attentive grading, including:
- responding to student drafts
- commenting rather than correcting
- using scoring guides and rubrics for common expectations
- fostering improvement from one paper to the next
- effective peer- and self-editing
- suggestions for alternatives to essays.
With all this and her Ten Tips for Handling the Paper Load, Carol Jago gives you everything you need to keep on top of student papers.
Customer Reviews:
Journeyman English Teacher.......2006-07-22
As a relatively new teacher of English, I was a bit worried about the paper load I will face when I begin my new position as an AP Comp teacher. Jago writes a very accessible book with lots of really PRACTICAL suggestions. It is a very fast read, and, with the exception of the 'paper-grading' parties she suggest to alleviate the "is'it just me" syndrome, (if we all got together as friends to grade papers - no grading would ever get done!) her ideas are realistic - and better yet, they offer reasonable short-cuts to the teacher without ever compromising the evaluation for the student. Everybody wins!

Outstanding Book for Students Considering Engineering.......2000-03-24
I was so impressed with this book that I decided to make it required reading for my Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Class at University of Nebraska. I gives the kind of advice that my colleagues and I wish we had been given as seniors in high school or freshmen or sophomores in college. It is highly recommended for anyone considering engineering as a career.

Customer Reviews:
A terrific help for a speech pathology/audiology student.......2006-06-28
I bought this book for my daughter, who just changed majors as a junior from English to Speech Pathology/Audiology. I was very impressed when I got the book. It describes what you should be doing and organizations you should be joining for ever year along the way: freshman through grad school. It even presents charts about median salary you can expect. It gives extensive charts as aids for the reports and other projects you have to do as a student of this science. It also gives many resources in the back of the book about schools that offer this curricula. This book is a must-have for a speech path major or guidance counselor.
Great guide for a newbie.......2005-10-15
This guide is incredibly helpful if you are (or considering becoming) a student in communication disorders and sciences. It tells you step by step what you need to accomplish in each year of college, and how to do it, in an easy-to-understand format. A must have for a CDS major!

Customer Reviews:
A little too much.......2007-09-26
I got this book when I got appointed the advisor for my high school newspaper. While the book itself has a lot of information, it really seems to be geared toward college kids or journalism students. The majority of my students are English as a Second Language students, and the language used is too hard.
I am keeping the book as a reference, but not specifically using it with my students.

practical and concise.......2007-06-13
practical and concise- it's the ideal introduction to studying art history (particularly studying and preparing papers for university art history classes). I took an upper-level art history class my freshman year of college, and this book really made it possible for me to thrive in that class, despite my absolute lack of advanced art/advanced university studies.

Book Description
Lionheart is a significant modern Australian autobiography. It’s author, Jesse Martin, became in 1999 the youngest person ever to sail single-handed around the world. His account of this epic journey makes for compelling reading, and has a good deal to offer as an inspirational example of courage and determination. Study of the autobiography is set, in this study guide, within the larger context of the NSW English Area of Study curriculum - ‘The Journey’. The guide provides background material on the journey theme, examines the prescribed Stimulus Booklet (‘Journeys’) in detail, and offers students ways of reading the text in relation to the Area of Study theme. It concludes with a model answer.
