Book Description
This expertly written guide will show you exactly why Pro Tools shrinks a full music studio into a computer, replacing the bulky recording infrastructure of multi-track analog mixing boards and rolls of two-inch-wide magnetic tape. Ideal for beginning, intermediate, and advanced producers, sound engineers, and musicians.
Customer Reviews:
Best Pro Tools Book for Musicians on the market.......2006-12-13
I started home recording with Pro Tools 2 years ago. I went through a lot of books, but this one was definitely a stand-out. I recommend it highly. The BIG difference with this book is that it is written around practical application of the tools. It is not a re-write of the Pro Tools Reference Manual like so many of the other books are.
Written with knowledge, passion and care..............2006-10-31
John Keane takes the time to really educate the reader, helping to build a solid foundation with Pro Tools from the ground up. This book contains invaluable knowledge that I find myself applying again and again in all types of recording situations. This is not another Fly By Night tutorial - but rather an in-depth, step by step truly awesome guide, written by someone who really cares about music. He really wants the reader to excel and learn from his many years of experience with Pro Tools. It also includes a CD with real studio sessions to edit and mix! If you think you can just jump into Pro-Tools ... think again. There's probably an ADD Pro Tools tutorial out there for those impatient folks who foolishly think they'll have Pro Tools mastered in 10 minutes! ... don't waste your money or your time ... it won't be anywhere near as thorough and you'll end up frustrated with a fraction of the knowledge. Invest just a little bit of time and you'll thank yourself, and John Keane! This is one of the best How To guides on any subject, I've ever come across.
Not Helpful for Songwriters w/ simple home studios.......2006-10-16
With all due respect to the author, I found this book frustrating. It seems to be written for engineers with experience in pro studios recording bands, NOT songwriters with simple m-box setups in home studios. I am a songwriter who records mostly by myself, one instrument at a time, so much of the advice and how-to in the book strikes me as overwhelming, confusing and at times irrelevant.
After my frustrating experience w/ this book, I ended up hiring a freelance instructor. It was money well spent. Here was what was on my list to learn -
How do I
-set the whole thing up (install program, get the right hard drive, get enough memory, get the mbox working, and actually record a sound onto a track)
-make a quick click track
-import beats
-perform basic editing techniques
-render a quick mix and a final mix (bounce to disk)
-put reverb and other effects on my voice (aux effects)
-find and install plug-ins (I didn't like the digidesign ones much)
In 4 one-on-one lessons, I learned enough to record and edit my songs with relative ease. In the 10 months following, I've gotten more comfortable w/ Pro Tools, though it is still confusing at times. I occasionally go back to this book when I have a question, but... very rarely does it answer my question! It either doesn't make sense to me, or just doesn't address my exact question.
So, I am going to try "Pro Tools for Musicians and Songwriters," by Gina Fant-Saez. I've heard it's much easier to digest for home studio songwriters. If it's not, I will update this review.
pay a lot for a Pro Tools class, or buy this book.......2006-08-30
Buy this book. It's really awesome. I was a complete novice, just recording and mixing with the sliders and now people think I have been working with pro tools for years.
Some tips when using this book. Make time and do a chapter a week like you are taking a class. Take lots of notes. Everything is very easy to understand, and you'll remember exactly what you can do, but you will forget what keystrokes to hit, and what icons should be initiated. So take the time to take some notes and even screen shots. Also, I found it very helpful, whenever John Keane said to "save as xxxx", I saved my session as the page number of the book. If you ever need to go back to something, and you will, you'll have it right there.
Great book! I wish more people wrote tech help manuals like this one.
PT Novice.......2006-03-01
For those who are new to Pro Tools and who need very basic information, such as where to save session files, this book is helpful, well organized, and easy to use.

save yourself the trouble and buy another title.......2007-10-03
This is the type of book you pick up at your local retailer and it looks really good - color photos, layout,, quality paper etc. After you use the book for a while you realize something's not in the index that should be. Later that day you realize tons of things are missing and then you find items in the text (not indexed) that are not even fully explained. Today I tried to find info about midi sync, ticks and samples, basic items like how to use cut and copy. It's just not there. Terms found in the menus on the sceen should all be in the index, in my humble opinion. I bought this book to learn PT and decide whether or not to go with a Digidesign or M-Audio system. On a one to ten scale for a "missing manual" I'd give it a 2. In addition it is not laid out very well. I would think a sensible way to organize a book like this would be to set it up through the various steps of doing a project and then putting some of the finer details later. This book dwells on details in some sections but tells almost nothing about some of the simpler tasks.
Good Book.......2007-08-14
This book is informative and easy for the beginner to follow. The flow is logical and an easy straight forward read. The only drawback is the index of the book. More information should be referenced in the index instead of the reader having to skim to find key points. But all in all a good reference tool to use Pro Tools......
Not for beginners.......2007-07-04
I'm new to digital audio, so of course to Pro Tools. I purchased this book as an introductory handbook and had to return it. I found it assumed knowledge I did not have and left a lot unexplained. The explanations that were present were good, but I found it confusing that the discussion might refer to an illustration as much as 3 pages earlier. If I had a basic grounding in Pro Tools I might have found this helpful but as a beginner it was beyond me.
Does The Job But..........2007-02-19
I am a beginner at home recording so, one must temper my review with that knowledge. Overall Pro-Tools works as advertised. It is robust and necessarily complex.
I have issues with the record mode failing intermittently and I cannot get my external reverb unit to work with Pro-Tools. I had everything working fine until I upgraded to 7.3. Now I have these problems. I will be in touch with Tech Support to try and resolve my problems.
I do have to give a cheer out to Digidesign's Tech Support. When I have contacted them they have been very helpful and willing to explain to a beginner how things work and walk me through the repair. My negative is that is take 20-30 minutes on hol;d before they answer. That is annoying.
I would certainly recommend Pro-Tools to anyone considering home recording software. Perhaps if I was more experienced, I would not be having these problems.
Excellent Pro Tools 7 LE Book !.......2007-01-31
This book is very informative. Many pictures of actual screen shots. First it goes through the various Digidesign hardware. Then into Pro Tools itself. I am learning alot. It is so much more thorough than the instruction manual that came with my MBox 2. If you are new to Pro Tools 7 LE and can buy only 1 book, then this is the book to get. You'll be very pleased.

Multiply many words and fill up those pages.......2007-09-30
Save your money and read your software manual. There's nothing "creative" that I could find in this book except the talent for using as many words as possible to say almost nothing. You are reminded over and over of 'what we covered in the last section' and it was hard to find a paragraph that said anything not covered by a million other books as well as the manuals that come with Protools, Cubase, Sonar and and Digital Performer. This MIGHT be an OK book for someone who knows absolutely nothing about the concept of MIDI, and sequencers, and doesn't own one of the above mentioned sequencers with a manual. I guess I had to give it one star to rate it at all, but I would actually give it minus about 3 stars for the deceptive title. "Creative"? No. Not. Nyet. Nada.
What A Great Idea for a Book on Sequencing!.......2006-08-01
When I first got this book, I was skeptical as to how helpful it would be to learn about four different sequencers at the same time - what a surprise to discover that this is the most useful book I've ever read on Digital Performer, let alone sequencing. It helped to clarify many features in DP that I didn't understand or took for granted, because I was able to see how the other sequencers tackled the same problems. Reading this book reminds me of how I never really understood English grammar until I began to study Spanish and Italian!!
Excellent supplement for your main sequencer library.......2006-07-17
Great book on MIDI sequencing emphasizing sound quality and creative quantization techniques. Lots of high concept material, backed up with specific routines for the four major sequencers. I own Digital Performer. The advice was a great supplement to the books I already use. The author recommends knowing how to use more than one sequencer. So the advice given on all four will help anyone choose a second sequencer, if they can afford one.
Great book on required sequencer techniques for effective and professional sequncing..........2005-12-15
This is more of a book on software sequencers' intermediate to advanced techniques on a how to use certain functions which are inbuilt in these softwares. It draws heavily from the sequencer manuals as to how something is to be done which is ok, but the real deal lies in the explanations as to why and when should one use a particular function in respect to midi orchestration. The chapters are graded according to basic, intermediate and advanced techniques, as to how and why certain functions are to be used. The chapter on the "Elements of midi orchestration" gives an insight to the actual musical side of midi orchestration as opposed to the technical aspects, which is a good eye opener for more musical composers and producers, but the detail is limited to instrument ranges and keys, and their practical uses. But considering the fact that actual orchestration needs formal training in great detail, I think that this book does justice on the essential aspects of orchestraing and sequencing effectively in a software environment.
creative sequencing techniques.......2005-11-14
As a composer and novice digital performer user, I have found this text to be the first to actually further my recording knowledge. Dr. Pejrolo writes in a clear, easy to follow manner and has organized the information, chapter by chapter, beauifully. It's a must have for all composer/musicians, beginner to intermediate. Thank you Dr. pejrolo!

Great book........2007-05-24
I have had this book for a while and it is great because it has lots of illustration. I also had version 6 book of this men and it was wonderful.
Very helpful.......2007-03-14
I'm still working my way through this book, but it's been very helpful for a novice user of ProTools. I would really give the book 4-and-a-half out of 5 stars. The only reason it doesn't get 5 is because there are some wickedly complex elements of ProTools that the book can't quite explain easily, since it's written at a beginning and intermediate level. Still, I like the simplicity and clarity, because it's what I need. The book even has a few sidebars that explain basic audio recording facts. Experienced audio types will probably find these sidebars laughable, but they're great for newbies.

Neccesary........2007-06-08
It's a quick start guide that is much needed if you are new to Pro-Tools.
Excellent reference for ProTools LE.......2007-01-17
Great written reference for less experienced users of ProTools LE. Descriptions and notated pictures help navigate the program extremely well. A terrific tool!
Pro Tools Ignite 7.......2007-01-03
This is my favorite of the books I have seen for Pro Tools LE styled rig. There are a couple others and this one is easier to use. Quite straightforward. Every text seems to have its unique ways to show the reader some cool shortcuts and this one is no different. That point is neither here nor there really. Besides, if you just want the shortcuts I think Digidesign still prints a laminated sheet out for the consumer.
There, howver, is one forseeable problem with the Ignite series. The obvious issue that Digidesign moves its software versions so rapidly that you may easily buy a guide that will only be current for 4-6 months. I think there has been a Ignite 6.7 an Ignite 6.9 and now the Ignite 7.0.
...But hey, you gotta pick up the knowledge somehow and sometime. Plus the 7 Series is the way to go if you want to use the current "MIDI Track" configuration. A whole lot has changed since the days of "Pro Tools 6.-"
This is a good book at an affordable price.
Great Resource for the Novice and Amatuer.......2006-07-14
I am brand new to the DAW (digital audio workstation) world. Pro Tools is my introduction into this complex and demanding source for recording audio. I always read the manuals that come with the product I buy to orient my self with it's functions and features. With Pro Tools the manual came in a whopping 700+ pages that was a useful but challenging read. I bought three user guides before I tried Andrew Lee Hagerman's Pro Tools LE 7 Ignite!. After completing the guide I feel more comfortable about navigating through the multiple features of Pro Tools. It was really helpful to have his downloaded sessions while traversing through the steps in the guide. Another great feature of his downloaded sessions were the finished sessions to compare your work with. While his guide does not include every possible property of Pro Tools he does offer a comprehensive introduction. The only area he admittedly omitted was the area of setting up your hardware for optimum efficiency. However, if you are looking to learn how to get through the basic steps to get a solid recording out of Pro Tools then this is a powerful guide to cope with the steep learning curve.

Seasoned or Newbie.......2007-05-20
This book is dead on and very informative, no matter if you've been at for years or just starting out. It's not only a "how to" but a very good "why is that?" type of read. You learn how to do what you need to do with your music and why it is done certain ways. So if you need to sharpen up the skills or pickup some to start with this is a good choice.
Ignore David Moran's comments..........2006-08-10
Mr. Moran, I don't usually take the time to write reviews but in this case I have to repond to your ridiculous and completely inaccurate comments in your 3-star review. Digital audio is NOT continuous, never has been and positively never will be. It simply is NOT possible to perfectly reproduce a continous analog sound wave with a rapid series of ones and zeros -- which is what digital audio (or digital anything, for that matter) is. With digital you can get close enough to fool the non-discerning listener. 96khz and beyond is an awful lot of samples per second; but no matter how you finely you slice it, they're still discrete samples and are in no way, shape or form continuous.
Very good book.......2006-06-01
I liked this book, it has tons of useful information. The ilustrations are great also, very comprehensive. I also liked the chapters dedicated to the role of the producer in the different stages of the pre, pro, and post production process. However, the author is a little repetitive in some concepts. Overall, good book, I recommend it.
GREAT FOR THE MODERN MUSICIAN!.......2006-01-25
I am in college and do a lot of recording for myself, others, and my band using my laptop. Without a professional recording studio to properly record and mix my audio, a book like this really helped me increase the quality of my recordings. With helpful tips on how to mix both audio and midi, as well as a few recording techniques, my recordings have started sounding much more professional. A+!

I have not read the book in full, but have heard the author wrote "Analog recordings are technically more accurate than digital recordings, because analog recordings capture continuous waveforms, whereas digital recordings only capture discrete samples of the waveform."
This could not be more wrong, and, although a common and pernicious fallacy, shows the most profound misunderstanding of digital recording (which IS continuous) and analog recording.
The problem is, if this guy (associated with Berklee!) can write ignorant stuff like that, he's capable of writing other misleading bunk about pro and semi-pro audio. And probably to be paid attention to only very carefully, indeed suspiciously.

Customer Reviews:
Pro Tools Book.......2005-10-05
This book gives you everything you need to know about pro tools. It is very thorough and almost makes me not need to take the class I'm taking!!! Also very easy to understand and placed in small enough sections to comprehend. Very good!
not much more than a basic ProTools manual........2004-12-25
If you do not want to waste your time printing out the .pdf files of the ProTools manual, this book may be for you. It gives you the how-to's, but without much extra in the way of tips and real world applications of the various tools, which is what I am looking for. For me, this was a waste of money and I still need a decent book on home recording. YMMV.
Disappointed.......2004-09-10
Very basic, nothing much more than the users manual with a few tips thrown in. Instructions tell you how to do things, but not why. Settings are not explained. Some sections are repeated twice (how to create a new track for example) Well organized, but not helpful at all. No hookup diagrams for TDM systems. I returned it for a refund.
Outstanding Pro Tools 6 Primer and Reference!!.......2004-08-04
This book exceeds expectation. It is comprehensive, well-organized and very easy to read; and the multitude of visual examples make it ultra-quick to use. I picked it up to learn the new features in Pro Tools 6, but it has become my primary reference on Pro Tools software. This is the place to start if you are new to Pro Tools. It includes extensive diagrams for setting up a Digi 002 (RACK), MBox, Digi 001 studio. If you're an experienced (TDM) user (like me), it's a great reference manual to have on hand, as almost all software features are the same in LE and TDM. and it's much easier to read than the manual...It also features very useful discussions of audio fundamentals, including mic types, mic placement, using effects (EQ, Dynamic, spatial, etc.) and covers fundamentals of recording, editing, and mixing....a great buy!
Neither a tutorial nor a reference for beginners.......2004-07-27
Another reviewer said this was a reference book, and in fact, the back cover declares, "Works like a reference book--you look up what you need and then get straight to work.". If you are already familiar with Pro Tools, that may be true. But if you are new to PT, it's not very helpful in that manner, as the how-tos are not detailed enough, they require prior knowledge.
For example, the reviewer mentioned adding a click track. Well, step 2 is "Create a mono Auxilary input and insert the click plug-in." If you're reading this and don't already know what that means, you're out of luck, as not only is no further information about that step included here, but it does not tell you what page to go to to find that information. A beginner would need, at least, "(see page x)" for this kind of reference book to be useful. And no, using the index doesn't solve the problem, either. There is no entry for "create" or "mono" (in this context); none of the half dozen entries under "Auxillary input" will take you to a page that specifically tells you how to create one. There is an entry for "inserts, plug-ins as" but it is 4 pages long so you'll have to further browse to learn the actual process. And that process includes another insufficiently explained step which may send you searching still further.
Okay, so maybe now you're thinking, it may not be a great reference for beginniers, but maybe a beginner should go page-by-page so that s/he has the necessary background for understanding the instructions as they're presented. Well, the click track instructions are on page 155; the instructions about inserting a plug-in are on page 321. So that's not going to work, either.
This book may be useful for someone who already has some comfort with PT and wants something to point him or her in the right direction in figuring out how to accomplish a specific task. As that does not describe me, someone else will have to review it from that perspective. But the book is marketed to beginners (based on the cover phrases like "QuickStart," "Teach yourself Pro Tools...You'll be up and running in no time!"). And from that perspective, I don't think it does the job.
