3 out of 5 stars not the best reference for interior designers.......2007-08-17

I found a handful of pages out of this book useful for space planning. Not worth fifty bucks unless you are designing equipment and products.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome reference.......2006-11-05

There's minimal reading in this book, which is nice since it's good for reference. The reading that it does have is very simple with bulleted paragraphs full of information that you can't get from looking at the diagrams.
Great diagrams for industrial design students (I got this for one of my classes), gives you the measurements, reach, sight and motion range, pretty much any numeric info you need to know for the 1 percentile, 99 percentile, and 50 percentile man/woman.
Also has nice chart of child development w/descriptions of what the ave. child can do at each age, as well as diagrams for the elderly (and in wheelchair). This book is essential if you are going for product design or interior design.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book.......2006-10-31

This was purchased to be a reference book for human sizes and I am very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting..........2006-02-13

This book arrived in good condition from the sender and before time. The book inself is very interesting and will serve its purpose.

4 out of 5 stars HUMAN FACTORS.......2005-09-05

I AM A BIG FAN OF THE AUTHOR, AND HAVE USED HIS WORKS IN THE PRACTICE OF MY WORK MANY TIMES, THE BOOK, IS GOOD WITH MANY PRACTICAL EXAMPLES, BUT SADLY DOES NOT SEEM TO TELL ME ANYMORE THAN I ALREADY KNEW. ....I WAS HOPING FOR MORE.

THE BOOKLET NEEDS UPDATING.

SUPERB THOUGH AS A REFERENCE BOOK.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The true value of this book . . . .......2005-08-09

I can only speculate that this book is, as was one of the previous editions I've read, used and loved, is bound to provide an exceptional foundational education in the skill of technical (engineering design) drawing/drafting for those with the natural aptitude for freehand drawing. Readers will indeed learn about and develop precision drawing skills--whether drawing with instruments or computer.

The true value of this book is in its ability to guide and therefore transform the natural artist's raw talent into that of a professional grade design artist--capable of rendering technical depictions, representations, or designs, at any time, with little effort, and without error. As with learning to walk, this of course takes time, patience, and practice.

I have personally witnessed the struggles of many whom, having necessity to complete a course of study based upon this book, were ill-suited by their own admission for the discipline required of the eye, hand, and attention (or mind) as demanded by the capable sketch artist--to say nothing of the trained detail design drafter.

If realizing the instructional value of Technical Drawing, 12th edition, seems to come at great pain and effort, the obvious question clearly becomes one of aptitude for drawing. However, while the aptitude for drawing is extremely beneficial, proficiency in technical drawing can still be achieved by sheer tenacity.

Technical Drawing, 12th edition, as with previous editions, is therefore highly recommended for the tenacious engineer, designer and drafter. It has stood the test of time as a solid component of engineering design instruction in this nation's premiere academic institutions.

1 out of 5 stars Reference book in need of an editor.......2005-01-17

.: edit, June 30 2007 :.

New rating: 3 stars

I wrote the original review in 2005, after several hours of trying to decipher this book and find misplaced information within it so as to complete a class assignment. Discovering that one of its specific textual errors made my specific task impossible, I wrote the following.

If Amazon let me increase my rating, at this point I would, but I maintain that it is unpolished and desperately under-edited.

.: end edit :.

As a freshman engineering major, I have been compelled to use Technical Drawing for a graphics course. This has been a profoundly frustrating experience. It seems that the authors, in their zeal to attain unto the dry, lifeless style characteristic of most professional engineering publications, also unintentionally created a text which is superlatively unclear.

I am recurrently astonished at the utter incomprehensibility of entire paragraphs. I will read a section, cynically assert that it communicates nothing, read it over a dozen more times, show it to others who in turn read it a dozen times, only to have my first conclusion affirmed.

There are extremely blatant contradictions.

Terms are used at the beginning of a chapter and not defined until the end.

It speaks voluminously about how critical it is to follow the prescribed techniques, only to devote less-than-the-bare-minimum amount of space to the actual descriptions of those techniques.

The review questions are frequently unrelated to the content they are supposed to be reinforcing, or are simply placed in the wrong chapter.

This (expensive!) book is a conspicuous example of "writing by committee." Technical Drawing may well be a decent-enough reference book - useful if you need a reminder about material you already know - but expect to get angry at it, especially if you're learning the information for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sources available.......1999-03-23

This book is loaded with technical information for the dratsman and designer. A must have for anyone who is in the mechanical technology field.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best text books ever written..........1997-10-05

This text was the basic drafting manual that I used during my technical education; its use did not end with school, however, since I refer to it frequently in my occupation. It tells everything that needs to be explained and described in the general drawing problems that might be encountered in industrial practice. It contains excellent descriptions and illustrations for: Drawing Threads, Fasteners & Springs Geometric Constructions Clear, Concise instructions in using Drafting Instruments, (before the time of Computer Aided Drafting & Desing, in any case). An Excellent overview of the Industrial Design & Development Process, (which I wish my supervisors would read). Sectional Drawing. This book is to drafting what Machinery's Handbook, of the Industrial Press, is to the metal working industries. There are a variety of Drafting Textbooks available, but none are incrementally better, let alone drasticaly better.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for college drafting course........2000-06-23

This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

    5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HELPFUL.......2000-05-07

I have had this book in my drafting library for some time now. I am always using it and recommending it. The book is laid out so that you can go from beginning drafting up through advanced. It not only says what the standards are, but walks you through drafting technology so that you understand why they are like they are. I believe that anyone that is going to be doing drafting should have this in their library.

    Book Description

In 1972, when the packing and crating for a major exhibition made it impossible for him to work in his sculpture studios, Henry Moore retreated to a small studio that looks out on a sheep meadow. Over the course of several months, as sheep were suckled and sheared, Moore produced this delightful flock of sketches and drawings. Sheep are as much a commonplace of the English countryside as hedgerows, but Moore looked at them afresh. Here are ewes nurturing their lambs, lambs playing in the meadow, and the swollen stateliness of sheep with full coats of wool. Many of the sketches evoke themes that are important in all Moore's work. The depiction of a ewe and lamb, for instance, suggests the mother-and-child theme often evoked in Moore's sculpture by a large form sheltering a smaller one. Henry Moore presented the sketchbook to his daughter, Mary. In this facsimile edition, first created under Moore's personal supervision, Mary's little lambs will charm anyone who sees these tender, vigorous drawings.

5 out of 5 stars A required reference work on the figure for your growth and development!.......2007-08-30

Henry's book opened up a new world of drawing to me and looks to be - regardless of price - the deal of the century given what some works of similar cost offer the reader or artist.

Henry's astounding level of line quality, and his ability to see - in an elegant way - what should be recorded on the page set his work and this collection of his drawings apart. While they are different in many ways, I put this book up with my Burton Silverman books as an oft' considered reference. Amazing and wonderful just to leaf through.. and fantastic as a learning tool! A Classic!

5 out of 5 stars A master class in figurative drawing.......2007-06-19

As one of the great draughtsman and artists of our time, Mr. Yan has compiled a book which really encapsulates what figure drawing should be all about.
A beautifully laid out book, Mr. Yan covers in a thoughtful and methodical way how to approach drawing the figure in several of the major classical styles, his thought process and step by step instructions on how to do so.
In saying that, his work transcends mere technique and has an energy that comes from being truly free to express one's self. He provides you the tools to do this, the rest is up to you!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and inspiring book!.......2007-06-11

I bought this book as a gift to my father, Francisco Lopes. His opinion about it is:
"This is a book that inspires the artist to express in his drawings a sense of living energy to the figure. You should have Henry Yan's book in your library even if you are a professional artist or not. It is an important and complete course of charcoal drawing."

5 out of 5 stars The difference between art and replica.......2007-06-10

I have been studying figurative art for several years and own most of the figurative books on the market. The difference between other books and Mr. Yan's book is that other books teach you how to copy the figure where as Mr. Yan's book show you how to create figurative art. The powerful drawings in this book make me think about values in a new way. If you are into figurative drawings, this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful artwork !!.......2007-06-07

Henry Yan's figure drawing gives you a great approach on how to work with lines, proportions and structural shapes to achieve volume in your drawings, but as well to work with a more painterly approach using mass and the use of shadows and lights to shape the form... it's illustrated with great examples of these two approaches, and you'll also see how he combines those two approaches line and mass in his examples.
You will find in this book Henry Yan's different steps to achieve such splendid drawings. Aside the explanations on his method of work, it's abondantly illustrated(portraits as well as figure drawings). There is to me a real quality in his line, composition of image and use of lights. Besides his great technicity,I find his work filled with a search of sensibility and mood in the capture of the model's pose.... that goes beyond just achieving "perfect technicity" so to speak, but in search of what the model's pose and scene inspires you, far more than just simply "copying" things. I have so far never seen a figure drawing book like this, it will defenately remain a source of inspiration to me. His "painterly" approach in his figure drawings is a great inspiration on how to use this method in colored paintings as well. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in figure drawings and in art in general.

    Book Description

This book presents drawings that Andrew Wyeth retained for his own collection -- many preliminary to well-known paintings. Created over more than five decades, from 1951 to 2005, they range from portraits of family members and friends to vibrant depictions of objects, landscapes, and buildings in and around the artist's homes in Pennsylvania and Maine. These works reflect the insight, emotion, and technique that are uniquely his. They demonstrate Wyeth's extraordinary skill as a draftsman and the accuracy with which he sees light and dark, enabling him to model forms while suggesting the very substance and texture of what he sees.

"I have always been powerfully affected by Andrew Wyeth's drawings and studies -- particularly those studies that do not attempt to cover the whole surface of the paper but instead focus on a few elements, so that the image seems to emerge magically from the empty white background, rather like a photograph that we observe in the process of development." -- Henry Adams

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Seeing the foundations; the pencil studies of Andrew Wyeth.......2007-01-05

I have had great admiration for the work of Wyeth for years now, but this book blew me away with its reproductions of Wyeth's pencil drawings. While most are unfinished pencil studies done as preparatory work for his watercolors and temperas, his skill and technique are awe inspiring. He has the ability to realistically render both the texture of an object and the effect of light on that object without appearing overworked or labored. There is a freshness, immediacy, and sense of spontaneity in all of the drawings.

As someone who wishes to improve his own ability to draw, I found the unfinished nature of the drawings enlightening, allowing me to see the manner in which Wyeth works. It also highlights his ability to see the essentials of what interests him about a scene, and then capture that essence quickly and masterfully.
