Good memories.......2007-04-28

I first read this book when I was about 11 and loved it. I thought it was so cool these guys had all these great ideas and equipment to pull them off. The book now reminds me of a simpler time when kids knew how to have fun with their imagination instead of a $400 video game.
I was so glad when I found the book available again. I look forward to when I can give it to my nephew and hope to instill in him the same sense of wonder books such as these instilled in me.

Read all of the M.S.C when I was a kid.......2007-02-03

My son has a thing for Kids Next Door, so I was immediatly reminded about these books. I loved them when I was a kid (8 or 10ish). I ordered the series so that I can read them to him (he's almost 6) and then he can read them when he gets older. I can't wait, plus this will get him more into reading (which he does more than he wants to admit) and less into tv and visual things. I'm sure he will love them as much as I did. Will post another when they come, but I distinctly remember a mini submarine, a baloon, and a flying saucer entering into the capers/stories (of this and other books).

When I was a child.......2007-01-31

I first owned the Mad Scientist Club through Scholastic Book Club. I think I was in the [...]and the book cost me $.35. Anyway, the book is good clean fun. There is nothing in the adventures of these young men that would embarass a parent. Actually, I always wanted to form my own chapter of the club. What they did seemed so much more interesting than holding a video game controller... which is what most kids are doing with their free time these days.

This book is one of my daughters favorites. She read it three times by the time she was 10.

One of the best memories of my childhood.......2006-06-01

was reading these short stories as they were published in Boy's Life. The collection was almost an anti-climax - still wonderful, but by then so thorougly digested I'd practically memorized them.

The real treat was when I bought these books for my son. Not only was there "The Mad Scientists Club" and "The New Adventures" thereof, but two full length novels published after the author's death - The Big Kerplop, and The Big Chunk of Ice.

All four are treasures.

Mad Libs-Worst Case.......2006-03-20

These are pretty funny and easy to do with kids. Keeps their mind off of how long it will take to get somewhere when traveling. Also good to review English terminology with them.

Good material, bad format.......2005-08-12

This book comprises the earliest issues of MAD, which were fantastic, and featured the work of comics legend, Wallace Wood among others. But be warned: The book is trade paperback sized, and THE ORIGINAL PAGES ARE ROTATED AND PRINTED ACROSS THE SPINE. The book should just be reprinted with a page per page layout, then I wouldn't have gotten the headache reading it that I did.

Changed my life!.......2004-04-03

I dunno, maybe I should say "ruined my life". But it was worth it. I read this paperback, consisting of reprints of the earliest (mid-1950's) Mad Magazine articles, during my formative years. It is responsible for putting a lot of subversive, politically incorrect ideas into my head about the way the world worked -- you know, like how men pursue women with curves, and women pursue men with money; basically all that good stuff that mature people pretend isn't true. And, by the way, I'm not suggesting that we can't or shouldn't struggle to rise above our lowest animal inclinations; I'm merely insisting that we can't rise above those inclinations until we admit they exist. The world is such a serious place that only the clown is allowed to speak freely. And these clowns set my head spinning. I'm not alone in saying this: A surprising number of people will tell you that early Mad was a seminal influence. Oh, and one special detail, aside from everything else: The artwork of Bill Elder is simply brilliant. I can stare at a Bill Elder panel for hours, always finding yet another gag within a gag within a gag.

Buy this book! Give it to your kids!

Mind Warping Humor At It's Best!!!!!.......2003-11-02

I had this paperback as a kid and loved it and still do. It makes me miss the days when Mad would advertise 100s of paperbacks by the letter pages.

The stuff looks best in black and white. The humor still rings true today even though the subject parodied may not be.

Part of the fun is that you can look for days at the art and still find new things hidden within.

I never thought I would see reprints of the original MAD paperback collections, but now, thanks to ibooks, I'm a happy man. This particular book reprints the first paperback, which itself was reprinted material from the early issues of the MAD comic book (yep, it used to be a comic, and much more comic-oriented). It includes classic work by Kurtzman, Davis, Elder, Wood, et al., that holds up surprisingly well today and is much funnier than MAD will ever be again. Enjoy the parodies of Dragnet, Archie, The Lone Ranger, and Superman vs. Captain Marvel, as well as goofs on the Comics Code, the HUAC hearings, and much more. Sure, some of the humor may be dated... sure, some of it may be over people's heads... but that's part of the appeal of classic MAD: the historical and cultural aspects of the humor. The average joe won't pick this book up and instantly understand everything within, but with a little studying, plus reading the excellent introductions to this edition, you'll get a good idea of the prevailing attitudes of the time, as well as the changing face of humor in the media. It looks like ibooks intends to reprint a significant number of the MAD paperbacks, which can only be a good thing in today's humor market.

Trouble with Television.......2007-01-04

Franny and Igor take us on hilarious adventure in Frantastic Voyage. Igor is constantly getting in Franny's way as she works in the lab. In order to get Igor to leave her alone she puts him in front of the TV. This turns out to be a terrible mistake. Igor gets hooked on watching commercials and doing whatever they tell him to do. While watching TV Igor swallows Franny's doomsday device which is capable of blowing up 1/2 of the Earth.

Franny will have to use all of her wits to solve this problem. With the help of some Root Beer, corn chips and Bubble gum Franny may just save the world!

This book had all of us laughing our heads off and rolling on the ground every day that we read it together. If you enjoy funny adventure stories like Captain Underpants, Garfield, Captain Fact, or Ricci Riccotta's Mighty Robot you will love this book!

...my 8 year old daughter simply devours all his books -- she practically has them memorized...she sits and reads them to her 6 year old sister who also loves them...maybe the writing doesn't quite rank with Charles Dickens but he sure stimulates an appetite for reading.

Now Entering The Nostril.......2006-07-10

In her fifth adventure, young Mad Scientist Franny K. Stein learns the evils of television and commercials, as well as the responsibility of creating Doomsday Devices. Bugged by her little brother and her lab assistant Igor (a dog whose only part Lab), Franny uncovers her mother's secret of putting her little brother in front of the television when she's trying to work. Inspired, Franny invents a remote control for Igor, and soon the pooch is sitting in front of the television and being influenced by commercials. With time on her hands, Franny invents a Doomsday Device that will destroy all her inventions so they won't fall into the hands of invading aliens out to control the galaxy. Unfortunately, the device will also destroy most of the earth. Things take a turn for the worse when Igor unwittingly swallows the Doomsday Device, thinking it was a grape. Franny has no choice to to shrink herself and go in after it. So Igor snifs her up a nostril and Franny goes on her ickiest, gooiest adventure yet. Thank goodness she likes those kinds of things!

Jim Benton writes and illustrates Franny K. Stein's adventures. He's also written the DEAR DUMB DIARY and IT'S HAPPY BUNNY series.

FRANTASTIC VOYAGE is a great book for beginning readers who still need illustration and lots of humor to entice them to keep reading. There's a laugh on every page. It's also a fun story to read aloud. As always, the author really enjoys bringing the every day life of a girl mad scientist to life, and showing readers what she has to learn about people and responsibility as well. Franny K. Stein books usually offer a lot of entertainment, but they also teach kids valuable lessons about being different and getting along with others.

Readers who enjoy Nate the Great, Captain Underpants or humorous, easy-to-read adventures involving lots of imagination will love the Franny K. Stein books. Adults who enjoy stories that can be read in a single sitting to children will discover Franny's stories fit the bill perfectly.

A Hit in our Home.......2006-06-18

This is the first young chapter reader I purchased for my 6 year old, and she loves it. The story is about Franny, a girl that is learning to adapt to other kids and their lifestyles. She is very awkward in the process, of course, as she is a mad scientist.

Franny loves science, and underlying this story is the theme that it's ok for a girl to be a geek. Don't be worried about the "mad scientist" bit. Franny isn't evil. She is a dabbler, liking bats and boogers, bugs and inventions.

The Franny series has captured my daughter's imagination. It is creative, unique, and something my daughter reads almost every night on her own. Franny has fueled my daughter's fire for reading.

There are no real scary aspects to the story. The monsters are silly, like huge lunch meat sandwiches.

If you are looking for a fascinating chapter book that captures your child's imagination, try Franny K Stein. My daughter wants more books! I have bought her the entire series, and she can't put them down. Her reading ability is growing in leaps and bounds!

Both my 10-yr-old son and 6-yr-old daughter LOVE the Franny K. series. My daughter is now intrigued with learning to read well enough to read these on her own....we need more Franny K.!

No one will like this because it is true.......2005-01-03

This book came right on the heels of the Beany Baby toy craze, but it fits perfectly for anyone, kid or grownup, who spends more time/money/interest on whatever the latest craze be, (Barbie, Yu-gi-oh, Digimon, the JFK auction, etc). I read this one out loud to my son, putting in sound effects and laughing at the characters, at the little whaddevers they were maniacally trying to buy, at the monomania of the cubs over the whole mess. I fear this may hit too close to home for some people--ever notice how many Beanys turn up at yard sales these days? SPOILER ALERT!!! As another reviewer noted, there is no real ending, the story just trails off, with Brother Bear's "What the heck did we just do?" look, and nobody's really learned anything. Now of course, there is a moral regarding passing fads, but it's just not as spelled out as explicitly as in most of the other books. Personally this had me on the floor laughing, my favorite line being "the only thing you could do with them was just LOOK at them", but I can see where other parents would object. Buy this one at your own risk, and write your own ending.

True to life story but where's the ending????.......1999-08-29

Berenstain Bears First Time Books usually touch upon some true to life problem that children encounter in their lives. The stories end with some meaning, helpful solution or an understanding that maybe it's not really a big problem. "Mad, Mad, Mad Toy Craze" does neither of these. The story is true to the Beanie Baby craze but there is no solution or even an understanding at the end. My children and myself were for the first time truly confused and disappointed with an ending of a Berenstain Bear book. If the goal of the book was for the children to come up with better ending to this story, then we succeeded. I will still continue buying this series but I will not recommend this book to anyone.

Hold it sideways and have some fun........2003-11-02

You have to hold this book sideways to read it so there you already look a bit Mad to begin with.

In the 1950s America was a very conservative place so when Mad hit the newsstands of anytown USA it was like the cultural equivelant of an A-bomb going off. Mad parodied anything that moved and was freshest and most vital in the beginning of its run.

The parodies remain a fresh today as they did then with hundreds of small sight gags that will take more than one rereading to find.

Classic humor from The Usual Gang Of Idiots.......2002-04-12

Funny stuff from the early days of Mad. The crisp b&w art in this 50th anniversary edition looks great. Handy paperback size. Be sure to check out the 1st volume of this series, "The Mad Reader".

Another Nice Primer - a review of "I Am Mad!".......2006-03-07

This is a Level 1 reader (for "children who are just beginning to read") in the Real Kids Readers series. If you are not familiar with the series it is photo based, which means that there are large, bright photos of children, pets, and adults that give `clues' as to what the story is about. Expressions are generally exaggerated so that even young children can figure out what the actors are thinking.

In this book, naughty Liz sprays the unnamed heroine's dress with what looks like grape juice. This makes our heroine mad and she huffs and puffs, gets red, and otherwise expresses her anger. That is until mom comes to the rescue, offering both to dry her tears and remove the stain. [Note: naughty Liz gets time-out, and the two girls end up playing together nicely. ]

Vocabulary is very simple and includes: I, am, mad, Liz, acts, bad, I'm, snack, mess, makes, have, pink, drink, dress, huff, puff, red, all, yell, a lot... and the like. The Font is large, and there are generally only two very short sentences per every other page.

Four Stars. Simple sentences and vocabulary make this a good beginners primer. I think children can identify with the frustration of the occasionally difficult playmate.
