Book Description
Can you find your digital photographs when you need them, or do you spend more time rifling through your hard drive and file cabinets than you'd like? Do you have a system for assigning and tracking content data on your photos? If you make a living as a photographer, do your images bear your copyright and contact information, or do they circulate in the marketplace unprotected?
As professional photographer and author Peter Krogh sees it, "your DAM system is fundamental to the way your images are known, both to you and to everyone else." DAM, or Digital Asset Management, in the world of digital photography refers to every part of the process that follows the taking of the picture, through final output and permanent storage. Anyone who shoots, scans or stores digital photographs, is practicing some form of digital asset management. Unfortunately, most of us don't yet know how to manage our files (and our time) very systematically, or efficiently.
In The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers, Krogh brings clarity to the often overwhelming task of managing digital photographs, with a solid plan and practical advice for fellow photographers on how to file, find, protect and re-use photographs. Following a thorough overview of the DAM system and de-mystifications of metadata and digital archiving, Krogh focuses on best practices for digital photographers using Adobe Photoshop CS2. He explains how to use Adobe Bridge, the new CS2 navigational software that replaces the File Browser introduced in Photoshop 7, with full details on integrating Bridge, Camera Raw and Digital Asset Management software.
Compellingly presented in four-color format, The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers brings Krogh's award-winning creative approach to a subject that could have been technically intimidating. Instead, Krogh's twenty years of experience and instructive visual storytelling make this material not only accessible, but compulsory reading for serious digital photographers.
Customer Reviews:
Organization!.......2007-08-31
This is a good book. It is very helpful in determining how to organize photographs. It also is a give a good review of Bridge. It would be nice for the book to be up dated to cover CS3.
An Excellent Overview.......2007-03-31
I found this book to be an excellent resource to help you to understand how all the pieces fit together.
Indespensable Reference for management & storage of digital photos............2007-03-18
As a novice in the area of digital asset management, I found this book to be extremely helpful.....well written and full of great suggestions on how best to manage your photos. Highly recommended.......a true five-star guide.
HIghly Recommended.......2007-03-08
Helps you learn how to deal with all the digital photography photos that amass on your hard drive. Do you save them as JPEG , RAW, both? What about DNG? How do you tag, and archive these files? Why would I do it this way? It's important to know when your files reach into the thousands!! Do you want to lose your data or save it as an inferior file? I hope this book gets updated yearly.
Once good, now seriously outdated and needlessly complex.......2007-03-02
The DAM Book was probably much needed when it was first published - its publication coincided with a realization by many professional and serious amateur photographers that handling the quickly growing digital photo collections required a sound organizing approach and dedicated software tools. The book aptly points out that dealing with digital image workflow and the resulting file archives is in many significant ways different than dealing with film-based archives. Based on this initial premise, the book offers recommendations on how to organize digital photo studio workflow and filing / archive system.
Alas, the author chose to tie VERY CLOSELY his mostly sensible conceptual framework (i.e., HOW to organize) with very specific software and hardware. Often, more general advice is difficult or impossible to separate from his step-by-step, software-specific recipes. So, unless you use exactly the same software and hardware configuration as the author, much, if not most of this information will be of little use.
Since the book was first published, new, DAM- and photographic workflow-oriented software has become available (Adobe CS3, including the new Bridge is now in public beta nearing its release; and Apple Aperture 1.5 and Adobe PS Ligtroom 1.0 are the new, more workflow-focused tools), and more up-to-date (although dispersed) discussion of problems in question can be found in numerous articles on the web. This makes large portions of the book obsolete, as new tools enable different workflows that may be better suited to many photographers' preferences.
The book has other issues.
First, the author LOVES using technical jargon. While technical vocabulary is appropriate in discussing technical issues, creating new terms and elaborate taxonomies for everything is an overkill. The author's misguided argument for using "controlled vocabularies" (a common term, which he uses in his own, very peculiar way - p. 47) is a good case in point. As Eric Abrahamson (Columbia Business School) aptly points out in his excellent book "A Perfect Mess," organizing is always good in principle, but OVER ORGANIZING by creating systems more complex than it is necessary to get the job done, comes at a very steep price in time and resources needed to maintain the system. Enough said.
Secondly, since this is a workflow book (not a coffee-table book), the full color print is totally unnecessary, and the price point is consequently too high. This should have been one of those $9.95 O'Reilly quick-guide booklets. Most photos reproduced in the book are simply decorative, or used as examples for things that are obvious (e.g. an example of a "group shot" - duh!; or a photo of wine barrels in a cellar as a metaphor for file storage system). Photos are not interesting on their own merit; screen captures and simple diagrams would be just as effective in greyscale.
In summary, you may want to flip through the pages of the book at a local library or bookstore - what's really useful and noteworthy here, can be easily grasped in less than 15 minutes; otherwise, your money may be better spent on a good book focused on the actual software tools YOU are committed to using.
Book Description
Maggie Taylor's digital photo collages have been described as a contemporary exploration of the Surrealist world view. In Taylor's strange, parallel universe, birds ride bicycles, ideas materialize in the shape of clouds, and wings sprout from the backs of prim Victorian women. Starting with objects that she finds on eBay, in flea markets, and in her own surroundings, Taylor then uses her flatbed scanner, Adobe Photoshop, and an Iris printer, to produce images of surprising beauty and emotional impact.
Adobe Photoshop Master Class: Maggie Taylor's Landscape of Dreams offers a close and richly illustrated examination of Taylor's practice, tracing her images from inspiration through execution. Taylor explains her influences, both in art and in her own life, and takes the reader inside the making of some of her intriguing, painterly work. Along the way, we hear from respected artists and critics familiar with Taylor's work, and from the artist herself, in conversation with the author.
Illustrated with more than 65 color plates, Landscape of Dreams is essential reading (and viewing) for all those interested in applying technology to a creative personal vision.
Customer Reviews:
Save your money.......2007-08-30
I used to appreciate Taylor's work because of those almost inert portraits, until I read that the only thing she does is buying old portraits on ebay or flea markets to scan them and add color and other stuff to create their "surreal" images, so I think today's critics really don't care much and celebrate almost everything even when is not an original work.
Besides that, the first half of the book is dedicated to interviewing a dozen of taylor's fans -including her husband- who leaves clear statement of how a great artist she is, and the second part features her work with maybe 3 examples of how she did them, in a very superficial way.
If you get this book based on the title, you will be very very disappointed, even more if you really think in what some people call 'art".
Maggie Taylor's Landcape of Dreams .......2007-02-11
I read this book from cover to cover and enjoyed every line. The book includes a short biography of Maggie Taylors life and how she came to be the great artist that she is today. This book also goes through her creative process and the steps she takes with Photoshop to achieve her photos. This book is inspirational and gives any photoshop artist a kick in the pants to creat their own works of art! AAA+++
Inspriational artist and technique.......2007-01-18
It's wonderful when an artist such as Maggie Taylor is, shares her mastery of techniques with us... thankyou for this book!
Sunshine over Maggie.......2006-11-28
I give this book three stars for an average rating mostly because the title is a misrepresentation. It is a very nice coffee table type art book with beautiful and thought provoking imagery created (mostly) in photoshop but it is not in any way, shape or form a "photoshop master class"!
While there is some exquisite imagery and artwork within, this book is written with much of the hyperbole of art criticism today i.e. "Isn't this artist wonderful and completely groundbreaking and influential, oh my!". This is not to say Maggie Taylor isn't a talented and provacative artist but I don't feel she is re-creating and re-directing the surrealist movement as we know it as this book might begin to lead one to believe.
The author, Amy Standen, writes much more about Maggie Taylor's life and inspirations than her actual work and even less about her creative process involving photoshop. There is one step-by-step tutorial (which is available as pdf dowload with a little searching on the internet, I had it before I bought the book, actually it's why I bought the book) and even then it assumes much about the knowledge of the reader. There are several in-process works which show images of each in various stages of completion but talks little about the down and dirty photoshop techniques used to create them.
I would have liked to seen much more in the way of tutorials and creative process in the literal sense. It's more than acceptable as an "art" book rather than a "photoshop master class" book but let's call it what it is...
Beautiful to look at.......2006-08-14
This is a beautiful book, with lovely pictures of Talyor's work. My only complaint is that "Master Class" is a bit misleading. Although I learned a lot about Ms Taylor, I hoped to learn a bit more of technique. I am still very glad that I purchased it, though. Her pictures are fascinating.

Book Description
As a piece of software, Adobe Photoshop is rare - perhaps alone - in evoking genuine passion from its users. As it evolves, it finds its way into the lives of more and more professional creators, tempting them away from their traditional materials, and expanding their horizons. Yes, it can alter photographs. It can also alter careers.
New Masters of Photoshop is a showcase of Masters who use Photoshop, and Masters of Photoshop use. The photographers, animators, artists, and designers assembled here have a myriad of different skills: some manipulate, some animate, some create from scratch. All of them produce remarkable, beautiful things.
In these pages, the authors will demonstrate examples of their print work, web work, public work, and private work, explaining the techniques they use to achieve their results. More than that, though, they'll tell you how they think: who their influences are, where their ideas come from, and how they find inspiration when the well has run dry.
friends of ED has scoured the world for the leading exponents of Photoshop technique. This book is a gallery of Photoshop practice and theory, backed with essays on the influences and inspirations that lie behind the sharpest digital art in today's media-saturated world. The book deconstructs sophisticated, complex, and astonishing Photoshop graphics, providing motivation, skills and inspiration in equal parts.
Support for this book is available on the friends of ED web site (friendsofed.com).

great.......2003-03-28
this book is great for inspiration and to find out "how they did that"!!!
Get It.......2003-02-28
There is really not much to add to the positive comments already posted. This book really is extremely useful. Whatever level you are you can find some inspiration here. There is an assumption you have an intermediate-level knowledge of the app, but that's ok, cos even if you dont you can just pick up your manual/power PS up and work it out. The key to this book is its insight into the processes of seasoned, acclaimed, professionals. If you aint any of those right now, or even if you are, you will benefit from this book.
NB - I'd drop it a half-point as the CD is pretty useless. But that would be unfair - think of the CD as a candy accompanyment. The book is worth its weight alone.
Overall good book for advancing techniques........2002-12-04
This book is very helpful to people who know something about Photoshop already. What makes it different is that you are designing through the eyes of a usually good designer and learning step by step how to acheive interesting results by recreating their own works. Each designer is different so you learn to attack the same type of problems from different angles. Some of the designers ramble on in their introductions, but once you get past that it's smooth sailing. This is not your usual tutorial book so try to do 2 to 3 exercises per week. I leaned alot about Photoshop from this book and I use it as a reference for techniques quite often.
BS.......2002-11-26
I could write a book on how bad this book is. It REALLY is not worth it. It would be a better deal to buy your neighbours garbage.
Basically, many of the images seem like they were pulled off the web and are therefore BAD (duh.) The text is poorly formatted and written. The designers mumble to an excrutiating level (like a bad high school essay.) Oh and the cd that accompanies it, why is it sooooooo useless?
I need to go find maalox.
A must have !.......2002-11-11
This is one of the best books available for PhotoShop users. Not only is it full of inspiration, you can actually read it ! I hope this style is a beginning and I can't wait for the next volume ! I have a collection of Photoshop, design and photography books, I have to say this is one of the few I keep on my desk.

The author (the son of Paul Caponigro, a photographer in the tradition of Minor White and Ansel Adams) of Adobe Photoshop Master Class is a skilled art photographer who specializes in intriguing naturescapes that often employ compositing and mirroring. In this book, he shares the photographic wisdom and Photoshop methods that helped create these colorful, mysterious images.
The title is appropriate: the book is modeled after master classes with performance artists; for example, operatic training with Maria Callas. The readers get to see, in detail, Caponigro's techniques and read his philosophies. This demonstration includes Photoshop basics that apply to all types of digital imaging, including calibration, adjustment layers, variations, levels, and curves. It also covers visual principles that are essential to photography in general, like proportion, scale, light, and shadows (including Ansel Adams's Zone system), and--important in the author's own work--reflection and tessellation.
The images, which are generally devoid of the human form, have an otherworldly stillness. Their quiet intensity translates well into book form: the typography and layout resemble a museum catalog, with widely leaded, delicate lines of type. Readers who prefer skimming through how-to books for quick results will be daunted by the level of in-depth attention that this book demands. On the other hand, those who hope to use Photoshop for high-end digital imaging (not just preparing JPEGs for the Web or 600-dpi images for print) will be rewarded by the author's extensive experience and painstaking attention to detail.
Most chapters discuss different issues (e.g., color or shadows) and use Caponigro's images as examples. The discussion is in a narrative form, with quotes and references to artists of all kinds, from Matisse to Goethe. It's like gaining admission to the most competitive graduate seminar, hosted by a renowned artist-in-residence. --Angelynn Grant
Topics covered:
Techniques for using Photoshop (version 5 or higher) on fine digital imaging, including:
- Monitor calibration
- Image resolution
- Applying levels and curves to the Zone system
- Output to print or film
And photographic issues and Photoshop methods used in the author's work, including:
- Photomontage
- Proportion
- Contrast
- Color
- Multiple exposure
Book Description
Adobe Photoshop Master Class: John Paul Caponigro, 2nd Edition is no ordinary book on Photoshop. It is a true master class by renowned artist and photographer
John Paul Caponigro, in which he shares his insights and discoveries as a visual artist. Although the book contains step-by-step tutorials that deconstruct some of Caponigro's most inspirational photographic works, the emphasis is on technique and visual problem solving, enabling you to take the concepts and apply them to your own unique projects. Updated for Photoshop 7, the revised edition of this master class includes numerous new and revised chapters that explain how to achieve color accuracy and extend dynamic range, direct attention through focus, control atmospheric perspective, and more. You don't have to be a professional photographer to appreciate and learn from this beautiful and informative book—Caponigro starts out with a section covering Photoshop essentials before moving on to more advanced artistic techniques.
Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners, but an outstanding book.......2006-01-04
I have many photoshop books, and this is, by far, my favorite. However, it is not for beginners. The words "Master Class" hint at the skill level required to appreciate the book.
This book will show you how a successful artist uses the application to create composites. It doesn't hold your hand and show you step-by-step examples. Rather, JP talks about how he used the different tools in Photoshop to accomplish something and what his thinking was behind the strategy.
The chapters take time to read (JP does get a little philosophical at times), but you will be rewarded.
Good techniques but mostly about vision and esthetics.......2005-04-05
I too found the very thin and light type of this book very hard to read. However, after vowing to slog through it anyway, I found the discussions of the techniques to be well done. The problem, which can be viewed as either good or bad depending on your bend of mind, is that the author takes the reader on his personal journey of discovery of digital art. And personal journeys takes a long time and are somewhat boring for anyone else but the person himself. Starting from a photography background, I found the artistic point of view interesting, even educational and inspiring, but too much of a good thing. After a while, I started skimming the main text and reading the 'methods' summary at the end of each chapter which spelled out the techniques in a nutshell.
Best for someone with lots of Photoshop experience.......2005-02-11
I because acquainted through this book because it is a required text for a second-level digital photography class I'm taking in college. I've read almost all of it. While there is a lot of valuable information (particularly with regard to monitor calibration), this book definitely has some issues.
Firstly, Caponigro's New Age tone is ponderous and meandering, and it's difficult to discern the necessary concrete tips hidden among the adjectives. The methods, in particular, are poorly organized. I took a Photoshop class (completing Adobe's Classroom in a Book), and I found the lack of intermediary steps to be challenging.
For this reason, my instructor--after many student complaints--dropped the requirement that we complete a number of "methods" (Caponigro's term for exercises) in this book. We are now free to choose other, clearer exercises from the multitude of Photoshop books available.
Also, while I appreciate the expertise that has gone into Caponigro's artwork, I don't care for most of the work itself, and I am not alone in my view. (Just how many bilaterally-symmetrical floating rocks does a reader really need to see?) While I'm aware that this is a personal bias, it definitely affects my overall impression of the book. If Caponigro's tone was a little less arrogant, I'd let that slide, but it's a sticking point for me.
Ultimately, I am sure there are people who would find this book to be a perfect fit. I am not one of them. I would recommend that anyone new to Photoshop stay far away until they've gathered a lot of experience and patience with the program. Perhaps at that point they'd be ready.
This is a "why" book.......2005-01-16
The shelves are packed with books teaching you how to create an effect in photoshop. How many units of this, and what filter to combine with this, yadda yadda.
This book is the complete opposite. Just the first few chapters blew my mind away! When the author talked about cuves and levels, I went crazy because I never knew there was so much to understand about them. Now I feel like I really know what I'm doing rather than simply bend the curves and hope for the best. I'm reading this book after reading Photoshop CS Bible (Pro Edition) and this is far far far more in-depth. Let me make one thing clear. If it werent for the bible, I have a feeling I'd be lost in this book. You definitely need to know your photoshop well to really understand this book. It takes you from undertandint photoshop, to understanding other things related to it such as printing and color calibration. It is in my opinion very advanced level and sometimes even I am lost in the author's words.
This book is a "why" book and teaches you the reasoning behind a lot of things related to photoshop. Its like the saying, give a man a fish and feed him for one day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime. In the same way, you can learn 100 different cool effects from any other photoshop book, but when it comes time to make that 101th effect, your lost and can only randomly make choices in photohop. This book explains the theory behind a lot of these things and thus when you see an ideea in your head, you know how to realize it..
This book took me a looooooooooooooooooooooooooong time to get through because its content is so heavy but otherwise, I have both my thumbs up!
Good intent but poorly written, too long, few clear examples.......2004-09-19
Mr. Caponigro may have started with the best of intentions but his writing is so bad, you have to strain to get through the material. He takes too long getting to the point and provides so little clear direction or examples, that I'm left only with his sense of self-importance, not information about Photoshop. If the he had let an editor shorten the book by half and provided more clear steps/information about using Photoshop, I would have indulged him more, but as it is, this book is of very little use for someone wanting to expand their Photoshop skills. Its the author being spiritual and groovy way past the point of usefullness.

Perfect for beginner or experienced user.......2004-09-30
This is a great book whether you're a beginning user or you've been around the block a few times with the program. It is very clearly organized around the various program functions which, makes it great for reading straight through or picking out the functions as you need them. I borrowed the book for options on cropping and removing backgrounds and wound-up purchasing my own copy for its versatility and ease of use. It comes with an accompanying CD that has demo versions of some useful programs, as well as sample artwork and a full copy of the book you can search through on your computer. This book is superior to the "Teach Yourself Visually" series also from Maran, which tends to really hold your hand through the most basic functions. It is also much clearer than the text-oriented books which have more words than examples. A nice balance overall that all but the most advanced users will appreciate.

Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop & Illustrator offers unique insight into how a master of the craft uses his tools. Monroy's techniques, culled from 20 years of digital image-making, demonstrate the breadth of 3-D photorealistic results that can be achieved using 2-D illustrative tools.
This oversize paperback features useful techniques from real-world projects. In many cases, we get to see the progress of an image, starting with the most basic elements: the lunch napkin thumbnail sketch. From there, it progresses into a more refined image created in Illustrator (which Monroy uses mostly for sketching layouts). After client approval, Monroy takes the Illustrator image into Photoshop for finishing.
Chapters focus on various visual elements: perspective, lighting, textures, reflections, and so on. The richness of the chapter on achieving realistic shadows in Photoshop comes second only to the chapter on painting trees and foliage. If you happen to be a user of 3-D software, you'll also find great ways to create texture maps for 3-D models.
The book doesn't have a companion CD-ROM with project files or texture samples--or a searchable electronic version of the book--but the idea is to learn to do it yourself, not just watch over the shoulder of someone else.
The toolbox of any artist is usually filled with countless devices that are both general and specific in nature, but invariably there are only two or three that are constantly used--the staples of the craft, the tools of the trade. In Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop & Illustrator, we learn how two of these tools in the hands of a master can be used to create exciting and slick images. It's an inspiring book for beginners, and an educational one for advanced users. --Mike Caputo

Bert Monroy: Photorealistic Tecniques with photoshop and illustrator.......2007-08-11
As an Artist, i have had deep respect for Bert monroys craft for some years.....only recently have i traded brushes for a stylus, and having come upon Revision3 and Berts video's...i was compelled to buy this book....i am not disappointed in any degree....having only a few months of illustrator ( self-teaching) i can't begin to describe the asset this book will become as i plug through......Thanks Bert......great book, and for the awesome art you create,.......
One of the best .......2006-01-11
Although the versions of Photoshop and Illustrator he discusses are much older than what's currently available, this book remains the best for tutorials on creating photorealistic drawings in both programs. I am in awe of his skills!
Avoid this book.......2002-12-10
Truly, truly awful book. Mr. Monroy should be ashamed. If you know the first thing about art or photoshop you do not need this book. I sincerely regretted buying it .
Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy is latest edition of this.......2002-09-05
This is a truly great book but Monroy has made a new book called "Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy" which is essentially an updated version of this book. I bet it would be a better buy.
Also useful for making 3D Surface Maps..........2002-04-17
I picked this book up, looking on how to make more realistic, complex surface maps for my 3D models in LightWave. Should have bought this book when it first came out. Can't imagine were I would be if I had back in January 2000...
This is the first book that I've purchased that's helped me out in less then a week. By just sitting around the house and looking at a few pages, reading the text that goes with the images and I'm actually learn something. After reading the chapter on Metal and wood, then sat down I did a few things, and I have now awesome results.
Bert Monroy and company teaches you how to use tools in ways I couldn't imagine before. Sure, you're going to think to yourself- "I could have thought of that"... much like I did. But fact is, you didn't. He did and he put it in a book. Many books are too vague and get bogged down in theory. Other books are far too simplistic and do a good job of insulting the reader's intelligence. This book is the Goldilocks of PhotoShop How-To books... it's just right.

Compositing is the technique of melding multiple photographs together so that they appear to be one. As opposed to collaging, where a level of artifice is intended, with compositing, the art is in making the image, no matter how fantastical, seem "real"--whether it's a dog lounging poolside with a drink in his paw or a dramatic lighthouse beacon over a stormy sea--just two of the carefully crafted works of master photographer and digital compositer John Lund.
Adobe Master Class books allow readers to look over the shoulders of some of the top designers and artists out there. Adobe Master Class: Photoshop Compositing with John Lund begins with an overview of Lund's process, from initial inspirations (even walking by mounds of dirt can make him reach for his camera) to collecting photographic parts (a rusty chain, an exploded computer, and a manhole cover magically merge to become a ball and chain smashing a wall), to the Photoshop tools and tweaks that bring it all together. Lund walks readers through the creation of twelve of his best-selling images, focusing on specific techniques integral to each. For example, for his photo of a "herd" of motorcyclists charging towards the camera (actually built using just two bikers), he shows how he made precision selections using the Pen tool. Other techniques shown include using the liquefy brush to create a devil's ear, adding details to a street scene using the alpha channel, and selecting a complex treetop using the Color Range dialogue box. Not only has co-author Pamela Pfiffner made Lund's story a great read, she has ensured that there are lots of screenshots for all these tips. This is in no way a Photoshop how-to manual and beginners may get lost, but intermediate and advanced users will be eager to apply Lund's methods in their own work.
Lund, an early adopter of Photoshop (a controversial move for any photographer "back in the day"), has carved out a successful career creating digitally manipulated photographs for stock companies like Corbis and Getty. Rather modest, he makes no claims to be a Photoshop guru: "No doubt in some ways my work would be better if I did get more precise in my methodology, but when I get caught up in the flow of work, I don't want to be bothered by naming every layer and looking at histograms--so I don't.
I'm getting along just fine bumbling through my image making." This new book makes it clear that there's a lot to learn from this level of bumbling. --Angelynn Grant
Book Description
Many of acclaimed photographer
John Lund's images are instantly recognizable. What's not instantly recognizable are the elements that make up these composite images or the Photoshop techniques behind them--to unravel those mysteries, you need this beautiful, full-color volume. In these pages, Lund and co-author Pamela Pfiffner show you not just how to reproduce his results but the creative process that generates them. The emphasis here is on simplicity: how to create extremely complex images using a few, fairly simple Photoshop techniques that even beginners can grasp. After providing an introduction to the creative process and conceptual imagery in general, the authors get to the heart of the volume: the images. Each of the 15 chapters deconstructs an incredible Photoshop compositing process showing the final image--in full-page, full-color glory--with an accompanying description of Lund's creative approach to the assignment, and a detailed, step-by-step explanation of particular techniques used in the project. So how'd he make that fire-breathing dragon? Why, with images of a pet iguana, flame, a wall, and the sky, of course!

Good book, but..........2006-07-07
This is a good book, and I'm learning alot from it, but... it's written in a very strange 3rd person style. "The circuit boards came from computers Lund had used over years. 'I always keep stuff like this around,' he says."
It's awkward, and reads a bit like a second-rate feature story in a local newspaper. It also seems like it takes many more words to get the point across .
Once you get past this strange authorial contrivance, the book provides good information.
Complex Digital Compositing for the Rest of Us.......2005-02-09
While most Photoshop books, teach compositing techniques by building on very simple images, John Lund uses real complex-looking advertising images and breaks them down into the simple steps used to create them. I found that made it easier for me to visualize the possibilities of the techniques he teaches in the book.
Another aspect of the book that I think is really succesful is the personal perspective that the author uses which makes the book easier to read than other Photoshop books I've read, which often have the pace and humor of a manual.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in taking their photography further, this book can truly be read and understood by users of any level, and I never would have thought that a Photoshop book could actually be enjoyable to read.
Great book! Must have for any level Photoshop user........2004-05-05
John Lund invites you into his studio, gives you a cup of coffee and lets you look over his shoulder while he works, all the while explaining what he's doing in a way that makes it easy to understand. And what he does is amazing!
This book is inspirational, not very heady (as in 'you could never in your wildest dreams ever do this') and practical (as in 'you can do this') with easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand steps to making some very unusual Photoshop illustrations.
The book has me thinking. I've been keeping a lot of photos I've taken with my digital camera for later use. With John's book I'm thinking of how I can do more than put someone's head on a cow. Compositing images is exciting, and John gives a lot to think about.
This book is human, kind, generous and it made me feel comfortable. John's attitude makes me feel like I can do it, and therefore, I'm encouraged that I can actually do things beyond what I might do on my own. His own story is inspirational and his techniques will get any level Photoshop user or photographer excited.
I highly recommed John Lund's Photoshop Compositing.
Doesn't worth the money.......2004-04-29
The book as no CD or a pointer to a web location where you can download the images to practice. There is no point to explain the techniques if you don't have the images.
There are a lot of other books on Photoshop, that are no so beatifull illustrated, but that you can learn a lot more by following the step by step instructions.
A WINDOW TO CREATIVITY.......2004-02-25
After spending so much time learning how to use Photoshop we finally have a book that in simple and understandable ways instructs the user in how to open up their creative side and really do wonderful and unusual things with photography and photoshop. It really opens the window of your imagination which inspires you to begin thinking outside the box and producing your own unique works of art. What a great addition to the Photoshop library.

Over cooked Photoshop images.......2006-10-06
Sorry, but the images look really overdone. This is not a good example of Professional Photoshop use.
Pure Fluff.......2006-07-19
I have to step in and beg them to stop ...all of the authors that just republish the same material over and over.
This is another example of big billing and no filling. Great images, to be sure....but they can be seen anywhere here on the internet. And in many of the previous "Best Of.." books. This is NOT...I repeat NOT a "how did they do that"...it is geared to the saps like me that thought perhaps this time ...wrong again. Pass on this...unless you want another ... "don't forget the basics book".
A nice coffee table book, but not very instructive.......2006-06-10
The author of this book is a wedding photographer, and he certainly includes some stunning photographs that he has processed with Photoshop. Those photos and the contents of this book would be enough for me to hire him as a wedding photographer, but not to recommend this book to photographers who need to learn various Photoshop techniques. The prose is too conversational to be very instructive. When you are writing a book that is teaching you how to use a software package, you need to take a more instructional approach and include clear numbered steps and frequent screenshots of the application, even if it is about an artistic subject such as Photoshop and photography. A good alternative to this book is "Complete Photoshop CS2 For Digital Photographers" by Colin Smith. That book breaks down areas of Photoshop into individual lessons that you can work through like a workbook. The author walks you through each step of the process and also provides clear alternatives. He also has more variety in the photographs with which he is working than this author does.
Thus if you want a very attractive and colorful book full of nice wedding photos that have been processed with Photoshop, this book will do the trick, but I would not recommend it for the budding digital photographer looking for clear instruction.
Examples of how the pros use Photoshop........2006-06-09
Photoshop is, of course, the electronic equivalent of the photographers darkroom. And just as in the case of a traditional darkroom, there are some practitioners that are far more skilled than others. This book shows the techniques from a series of the best Photoshoppers around.
The first half of the book (or so) is on general digital working techniques, color management and device profiling. The last half is on Photoshop Techniques. There are, of course, numerous before and after pictures to illustrate what is being done. And as with all Amherst Media books, the printing is great.
I would not consider this a beginners book on Photoshop. These guys are pros, and they tell you what they did to the picture, but they are using Photoshop terms that they simply presume that you will understand.
All in all, a beautiful book that shows the level to which you might aspire.
