Terry and the Pirates - Great old stuff!.......2007-10-13
Terry ahd the Pirates is not quite as good as Bruce Canwell indicates in his introduction to this volume when he calls it, "argubaly the best.." (comic strip introduced in 1934.) After all, as he points out, that was the same year in which Flash Gordon and L'il Abner began. It's still an amazing comic strip. I wanted to give it 5 stars. But the reproduction quality kept me from doing that. The Sunday strips are too small, especially in the beginning of the book. When the logo changed,(Aug. 18, 1935) the reproduction improved greatly, as there were only 3 rows of pannels, instead of 3, plus a half length pannel running all the way across the top. It made enough difference that I now intend to buy future volumes in this collection, whereas before I got to this point, I didn't intend to. There's a lot of good in this strip. Caniff's art grows enormously from October, 1934 to the end of 1936. Howard Chaykin promises in his introduction that there is better art yet to come. The strip is also well written, with Terry and Pat moving rapidly from action scene to action scene. But it is Caniff's art that is the real strength of Terry and the Pirates.
A genuine treat from beginning to end .......2007-10-06
Milton Caniff was one of the most popular and influential newspaper comic strip artists and storytellers of his day. Perhaps his most important and successful strip was "Terry and the Pirates" which began in 1934 and finally concluded some twelve years later. IDW Publishing has published the first volume of this outstanding series which includes more than 800 consecutive comic strips (black-and-white during the weekdays and in color for the Sunday papers) beginning with its 1934 debut and continuing through to the end of 1936 and comprising all of the strips for the series first two years. A whole new generation of readers will be introduced to young Terry lee, his adult pal Pat Ryn, their sidekick Connie, and an unforgettable array of brigands and bad guys including Captain Judas, Blaze, Burma, and the one-and-only Dragon Lady. Very strongly recommended for personal and community library collections, this debut "Terry and the Pirates" collection of high adventure on the China Seas is a genuine treat from beginning to end and will leave the reader looking eagerly toward the arrival of Volume 2!
Low definition scans for the dailies.......2007-09-26
Fantastic stuff, beautiful thick volume, but the worst low-definition b/w print I ever seen in years! What a pity. I hope things come better in the next issues.
Begining of a great reprint series.......2007-09-17
This is an excellent first volume to this comprehensive reprinting of the classic "Terry and the Pirates" series. I have wanted to read this series, but missed out on the previous reprint series done by NBM several years back (being a poor student at the time, I could not afford the multiple expensive volumes).
I hope the success of this series, along with the current reprint series on Peanuts, Dick Tracy, Popeye, Gasoline Alley, and Dennis the Menace will bode well for the upcoming Little Orphan Annie and Pogo series, and will lead to better reprints of other classic series.
A Big Disappointment.......2007-09-17
I'm a big Caniff's fan. I bought this book and I won't send it back. But I will surely not buy the following volumes.
There's no question that Milton Caniff was a true complete genius. His strip Terry and the Pirates is undoubtly one of the most outstanding artistic achievements in the literary and graphic arts of the XXth century.
But this edition just doesn't cut it.
Scanning and printing haven't been done with enough definition: The line art is unsharp and unworthy of such a smooth and inspired inker as Caniff.
The strips are reprinted too small. Especially the format of the Sunday Pages is ridiculously tiny. And graphically weird: 3 thin strips to a page, historically conceivable, but esthetically inappropriate. For a book which wants to be the definitive edition, it is pretty shocking.
The worst, yet: The art has been scanned very darkly, to the contrary of the NBM-Flying Buttress edition. The gray screens come out much too strong: You get Caniff's blacks, but his lights are gone! This printing is maybe 10% more accurate than the NBM-Flying Buttress scans, but the black & white balance ist at least 30% off... And offputing!
The extra-bonus materials are sparse and reproduced much too small. The introduction articles are totally superficial and uninteresting. The object in itself is much too big and to heavy to have an enjoyable and relaxed reading session.
Oh, please! Bring us back Denis Kitchen, Peter Poplaski, Shel Dorf and their Kitchen Sink re-editions!
In the meanwhile, try to find the (although not perfect either, but much more enjoyable) NBM-Flying Buttress edition.
Book Description
This book is a powerful reminder that there's more than one solution to every creative problem. Author Mark Wasserman has created a unique experiment in design that is much like the process of remixing music. Top designers were given the source files to one of 37 original designs and asked to reinterpret the original art into new creations. Ultimately, the project was not about making a design better, but about different visual approaches. Besides being a visual treat, these remixes can also serve as a creative jolt for those inevitable times when designers need a little extra inspiration.
Each section starts with an original design and detailed Q&A-style captions that explain the concept and process behind the design. The following redesigns--ranging from wild freeform creations to more subtle changes--are paired with insightful interviews that give readers a rare glimpse into the creative thought process.
In all, the book features 160 designers, from 20 countries around the world. Designers involved include such notables as Stefan Sagmeister, Dave Eggers, eBoy, KINSEYvisual, Joshua Davis (PrayStation), Modern Dog, The Heads of State, WeWorkForThem, Jemma Gura, UPSO, Aesthetic Apparatus, Brent Rollins (Ego Trip), Plinko, Deanne Cheuk (neomu), 2Advanced, Nonconceptual, Jon Santos, HONEST, kozyndan, Milky Elephant, Patent Pending (SubPop), Mr. Jago, and many many more.
With page after page full of never-before-seen artwork, this book is equally at home in a designer's bookshelf, and a non-designer's coffee table.

Exercise for the Creative Imagination.......2007-06-08
This collection of original ads and the subsequent exercise done by at least 4 different design firms is a very interesting approach to an art book. I enjoyed the accompanying "interview" with each designer so you could align the feeling you got from the rework with their explanation of the approach.
So far so good..........2007-05-07
I work as a designer myself in an advertising agency and have only had this book for a short time, but really enjoy looking and reading through it. It has givien me inspiration and motivation in my own work. Also it has been a good way of seeing how other designers and artist percieve the same idea or concept. This book is great for anyone who wants to see or learn how other designers work, it's a good motivational tool.
Inspirational!.......2007-02-09
Right when I opened this book I already knew that I would be hooked. The idea that certain design work would be redesigned by other designers helps me to see that there is never one way to solving a problem. If you want a new perspective on a project you are on, perhaps this book will help!
Totally reinvents the 'redesign' genre of design books.......2004-09-30
If design books have one general fault, it is failing to keep up with the curve, the leading edge of graphic design. Things change so quickly. The subgenre of redesign books has been among the worst offenders in this area. That's because many have been content to take 15 year old designs and reconfigure them for today, in the process inadvertently passing off more or less standard results as special work. This book is a total break with this lazy tradition of contrasting your father's design and your own generation's. It does that by picking relatively recent designs for "what if" rethinking. The results play out as mind-blowing re-envisionings of already edgy design. To me that's what sets this book apart: the pieces being redesigned aren't ancient, they aren't the least bit stodgy. In most cases, the originals up for redesign could probably themselves have appeared in fairly recent design annuals, and may have, in many instances.
Rethink Redesign Reconstruct is a fresh, exciting book that stands out in a genre of the design book field that has settled into a comfortable rut. I would call it a definite must have among current design books.

Pleasing Pulp Tale of the Paranormal........2005-09-24
I began reading the Hellblazer books when the 'Constantine' movie was on the horizon. Held together by John Ridgeway's perfect illustrations, Jamie Delano crafts a great story. A little gem of enoyment for me are the Dave McKean illustrated covers.
Old horror comic charm..........2005-04-29
Delano takes a deeper look into the world of John Constantine. This first take on the character since introduced by Allen Moore (comic-diety) isn't as crisp as later versions, but the edginess is what gives it the old horror comic charm. A great launch from once-supporting character (that at times overshadowed the main character in Swamp Thing) to a lead that can hold his own, plus some.
Delano stinks.......2005-04-02
I started reading Hellblazer from the beginning recently. And I have to tell you...the first 40 issues suck root. I kept plodding through thinking it had to get better. And it did. As soon as Garth Ennis took over writing duties. The first 40 issues were quite literally painful. I can't even begin to tell you all the things I hated about this book until Delano went away. After that, it actually starts to get interesting. Save your money and invest in some of the later books.
Politically aware horror comic.......2005-02-04
With the new film soon out I thought that I should defend this comic book. I fear that the film will remove everything that is good, which is not unusual for Hollywood anyway! First of all I have serious doubts about Keanu Reeves as Constantine. Why not Jude Law?
John Constantine, is a punk-gothic anti-hero. He has a conscience, but it is hidden behind too much cynicism, alcohol, and tobacco. He has seen too much. His world is not the cosy world of nine-to-five jobs, or simple cause and effect. He is a mage, albeit a minor one. In the comics he is first and foremost a facilitator. He is one of the few that can move freely in both 'normal' and supernatural society. Of course, that leaves a twisted mind.
What really made this comic stand how it delivered its political message. All stories in this collection are very political, but they deliver their message in a very allegorical form. They chill me out because they capture so well the atmosphere of the 1980s, or the 2000s for that matter! The portray a spiritual poverty that opens up doors for forces both from heaven and hell to enter and exploit.
Some stories deal with the people that are just out to make money, other, more frightening stories, deal with the forces of hell and heaven that are trying to take over our daily lives. Yuppies are created by demons from hell and satan worshippers sacrifice runaway children. By far the most dangerous threat is posed by the well-organised and fanatical christian fundamentalists. Try the truly shocking story "When Johnny comes marching home" which deals with the scars left by the Vietnam war on the US. This is my favourite since it really transcends the classical horror genre and creates something truly new. It is not rotting corpses coming back - it is something so much worse that comes back...
The drawings can be very evocative, capturing extremely well the grime and filth of industrial England. Sometimes they are bland, but sometimes they are extremely evocative and powerful.
I just want to add that this review is for the first book only; the other ones are not half as good.
John Constantine is also a minor character in the comics Swamp Thing, Books of Magic, and Sandman.
Meet John Constantine.......2004-10-30
Originally a supporting character brought to life by visionary comic scribe Alan Moore in his legendary run on Swamp Thing, the hard drinking, hard smoking, bad luck magic mage named John Constantine got his own series with Hellblazer. Collecting the first nine issues of the series written by Jamie Delano and drawn by John Ridgeway, Original Sins is really nothing special compared to the following volumes helmed by various creators. Delano's story is sufficient enough, albeit sometimes incoherent, while Ridgeway's art is nothing more than average at best. However, Original Sins is a nice starting point for newer Hellblazer readers (of which there possibly will be more with the upcoming release of the feature film entitled Constantine with Keanu Reeves in the starring role) and it only gets better from this point forward. Future volumes which feature work by future Preacher creators Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Transmetropolitan creator Warren Ellis, 100 Bullets scribe Brian Azzarello, and current writer Mike Carey, are much better and amazing comic work, and are more than worth your time.

8th great collection.......2005-04-11
Adult black & white collection of drawings.
This is the eighth (or at least eighth) collection of drawings involving housewives. There are around 38 well-drawn detailed drawings of women inside the book. The pictures range from somewhat tame (I guess the tamer ones in this collection would involve women not yet caught) to somewhat extreme (involving bondage in one form or another, humiliation, getting caught in action or incest, or the cooking of some form of the female body). The women are mothers and daughters, teachers, doctors, students, lactating women, pregnant women, and neighbors. The men, if there is a man in the picture, is shown shocked/surprised at the antics of their wife, or is not yet aware of the nature of the action. Some of the action is conducted behind closed doors (like the one where two women are caught together in the bedroom) and some of the action is quite open (like the back to back pictures of a daughter (I assume) sitting in the outdoors, naked, under a sign that notes "My Daughter "Puts Out!" and a mother, mostly naked (or at least exposed) under a sign that states "uck my mom's hot . . .").
Overall, the collection is interesting, and well-drawn. The collection contains pictures of bondage, whipping, cooking of female body parts, and humiliation. Note: some of the collections contain a page that collects the title of the pictures, but this collection does not contain that particular page.

Happy to see it back in print.......2007-06-29
I have an original copy of this great bok. I bought a used copy off of Amazon
about a year or two ago.I first read this book as a kid many, many years ago.
As a kid this book was a lot of fun to read. It still is. It covers more about Batman than any book out there. You will learn everything you would like to know about the Darknight Detective (From his beginings up until the 70's). I happened to see the book at my local bookstore last week. I was really happy to see that they have reprinted it for newer generations. I was tempted to buy myself a copy but I am happy with my used one. I think I will buy one for my nephew who is also a Batman fan.
So if you want to know about how Batman learn to throw the batarang, if you want to read about the two Batgirls and Batwoman. if you want to read about Alfred's time as a vilian who vexed Batman and Robin, if you want the low down on Bat-villians and Bat-friends...and if you just want to sit down, relax and enjoy reading the legend and lore of one of comic-doms greatest heroes then this book is for you.
DC has also reprinted the Superman and Wonderwoman encyclopedias (original copies which I also own). I recommend them also.
Fun stuff.
Buy and enjoy!

"Regular" Chess will never be the same!.......2007-02-19
My 11-year-old loves this game! He's been playing "regular" chess for a couple of years, but when an adult friend taught him to play Knightmare Chess he enjoyed the game so much that he spent his Christmas money to buy it for himself. He and his friend play several times a week. The game is different enough from chess that they still enjoy a "normal" game, once in a while, as well. Thanks for expanding the use of the chess board!

Old-School Speed Racer!.......2002-10-28
I purchased this book as a gift for my brother, who is a big Speed Racer fan (of course, I had to read it first before giving it to him!). If you read a lot of recent manga, comic books, or graphic novels, the stories may seem a bit simple and the drawings may seem a little crude. However, they're still good stories, and the flavor of the era in which they were written really comes across. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves Speed Racer or manga in general!
wiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeerd.......2001-02-17
a speed racer manga.............soooo wierd. i guess everyone's gonna think its dumb 'cuz of the english show, which is really horrible, but you should giv ethis book a try because it was a hit in japan, and there has to be a reason for that. so just give the book a try, i thought it was ok. definetly like %200 better than the english tv show
